On the basis of interviews with members and leaders of folklore ensembles, specialists and visitors of events, a questionnaire survey of members of folklore ensembles, observations of events, analysis of audio and video records and texts of members of folklore ensembles, specialists and scholars, scholars’ attitudes about these characters in the old ethnic culture is discussed, the history of the related practices in the folklore ensemble movement is reviewed and interpretations and expressions of the characters in folklore ensembles are analysed. The research of several images of characters of ethnic culture, their interpretations and expressions reveals that many features described by scholars can be noticed in one, quite seamless movement of revival of ethnic music – in the Lithuanian movement of folklore ensembles. Despite available sources, members of folklore ensembles consider their personal experience of the countryside as the most valuable source for construction of their vision of ethnic culture. This can be regarded as the most important feature of the vision of ethnic culture relevant for the movement of folklore ensembles.

The Song Festival Law (2007), Approval of the Song Festival Tradition Continuity Programme for 2007-2011, internet websites (llkc.lt, dainusventes.lt and unesco.lt) and sub-regional conference resolutions (2005-2007) were reviewed and conclusions were drawn that song festivals, festival traditions and its continuity and development were regarded the most. Lithuanian residents were surveyed and it became clear that song festivals are valued highly for the values and traditions that they uphold and the representation of ethnic culture. Also, the festivals were linked to new acquaintances, leisure time, group activities and elevated mood. However, contemporary pieces are not highly valued. Song festivals have a positive impact on the society (they provide psychological protection from the threat of disappearance). To form positive opinion the following tools are employed: press, society education and integration and events related to the continuity of song festival tradition.

Texto completo da fonteThis master‘s thesis aims to investigate love stories by teenagers and young adults published on the Internet. Love stories are included into stories of personal experience. They are stories that people for some reason remember and tell others as opportunity offers. The main aims of the paper are to establish characteristics of love stories on the Internet, their similarities and differences from more casual love stories – written or told, moreover, to analyse what and how much does a love story on the Internet tell about the storyteller and his environment. Qualitative analysis of these texts is based on findings in psychology and especially developmental psychology and knowledge from folklore. For the analysis purpose http://www.svajos.com website was chosen because of a great amount of love stories it contains. Three main topics are analysed in love stories, namely, information about the love storytellers, for example, their age, gender, personality; their social and cultural environment such as family, friends, leisure, emigration, virginity, death; variety of forms of love stories, for example, explicated and non-explicated content, stories with happy endings and unfortunate endings and other forms such as short texts with no plot, letters and dreams. Analysis of the love stories on Internet from the age perspective showed that sometimes the age is given by presenters themselves and sometimes it can be established from certain clues. Analysis of the love stories on... [to full text]

What values are developed during construction of own space? Subject of the research: peculiarities of construction of own space in the ecovillages under research. Theoretical ground of the final project is an aspect of anthropology theory. The methodological basis of the final project consists of the anthropological research methods: participant observation, unstructured interviews, informal conversations, fieldnotes. Data from the official website of the Lithuanian ecological settlements reveal that Lithuania currently has approximately fifteen ecovillages. Such places are selected by people very carefully because the places become the spaces to be filled with different cultural values by the residents, i.e. the residents develop and form their own space. Residents of the settlement strive to develop in their own space the utopian residence model in compliance with the imagined rules and experiences. Reasons to choose such lifestyle are influenced by many factors. Though the people strive to make distance from civilization and society, but construction of own space oddly repeat the same social model. Two important aspects are described in the second part... Texto completo da fonte1. Taking guidance from the paradigm of interpretative anthropology and basing on three perspectives – the role played by the researcher, research participants, and sociocultural context in the creation of evil eye construct – the doctoral dissertation has determined the representation of contemporary Lithuanian evil eye complex. In order to demonstrate a wide variety of individual attitudes and notions the present work highlights the intersections and interactions of differing opinions, stressing the continuous creative process due to which a flexible and vague construct emerges. It enables evil eye believers to express a multitude of various meanings and personal experiences for the purpose of interpreting their personal and social failures, unfavourable circumstances of life, and general lack of fortune. 2. In contemporary Lithuania, the evil eye complex manifests itself as a homogeneous multifaceted cultural construct, the creation of which involves people differing in terms of gender, age, profession, and education. However, from the point of view of gender, the evil eye representation is not balanced. Females express and stress the idea of evil eye more intensively than males. The hypothesis that females in contemporary Lithuania, compared to males, learn about the destructive power of eyes sooner and are better informed about the evil eye was corroborated. Basing on the existing data it is possible to contend that the idea of evil eye is more important to females than... [to full text]

Texto completo da fonteThe concept of magic in a scientific discourse inevitably reveals not only the concepts of a scientist or a society that is being researched but also highlights disjunctions between them. This causes a need to widen the boundaries of the concept focusing both on the practical side of magic and the common aspects of a magic worldview. The object of the research is to reveal a variety of understanding magic based on concepts of magic and religion, magico-religious practices, and Otherworld experiences and conceptions of Lithuanian students. The analysis of students‘ concepts of magic and religion and magico-religious practices revealed the most common concepts and features of magico-religious practices in the group researched. The dissertation explores not only students‘ concepts of magic and religion and magico-religious practices but also Otherworld experiences and conceptions, which reflect magic as a part of the common human worldview. In such context dualism in perception of magic comes to light; two different ways of perceiving magic are reflected. On the one hand magic reveals itself as the whole of actions oriented towards an aim. On the other hand students‘ Otherworld experiences and conceptions that reflect themselves in student’s magico-religious practices reveal magic as a contributory element in a person’s worldview formation.

Texto completo da fonteThis dissertation is intended to be a mapping out of, and an exercise in, the research possibilities on the ceremonial activity of the Mebengokre (Kayapó) Native Brazilians, especially the subgroup known as Xikrin do Cateté, in southeastern Pará, Brazil. Based on a bibliographical revision on the music-ritualistic Native Brazilian expression and on the socio-cosmological processes which support it, the main themes dealt with in this paper revolve around the Xikrin notion of person, his or her construction, classification and transformation. The backdrop of this paper is the hypothesis, present in the literature, that the production of the Mebengokre identity congregates various spatial-temporal dominions and possibly different alteritys of the cosmos. In the first part of this dissertation, I accompany two discussions: (1) the place of \"music\" in the anthropological studies on Native Brazilian experience and (2) the papers on the Mebengokre in light of contemporary debates on the Amazonian ethnology. Both discussions converge to the possibility of the above-mentioned hypothesis. In the second part, I explore three contexts in which the identity-alterity in the construction of the person, especially one\'s body, is verified: (1) the notions related to the sensitive faculties of the body and the manner in which they take measure with different socio-cosmological dominions, (2) the possibilities or impossibilities, throughout the cycle of life, of an individual having a relationship with his or her alterity, and (3) the collective context in which these contacts become potentialized throughout the ceremonial periods.

Texto completo da fonteIn this work estimation and interpretation of dreams in traditional Lithuanian culture were investigated. The object of the work is dream interpretations, statements on the fulfilment of dreams and individual narrations about them, spreading orally and with the help of popular publications. In the work, dreams are investigated images of which are understood in the figurative sense and need some explanation. It was set out that dream interpretations can be ascribed to category of beliefs. A dream image is related to specific meanings according to the principles of analogy, antithesis, identity and similarity of words. People single out concrete objects from the whole dream and interpret them: 1) identify dream images recognized in certain cultural environment, with specific mythical implications ascribed; 2) link images to some event supposed or already happened on the ground of intuition and /or personal experience. In dream interpretations and narratives on dreams, a dream image and its meaning are defined. Between the parts of interpretation and narration there exists a connection “sign - event / implied event”. An image seen in a dream does not cause a certain result but only inform a person about it. There is no one-sided approach to dreams. Some people estimate them rationally and some do belief in their prognostic power. Certain dreams have an effect on a dreamer: a person seeks to avoid a negative event and is more attentive while controlling his behaviour, looks for... [to full text]

According to the Lithuanian and foreign scientific literature and document analysis cultural creative industries (CCI) concepts are revealed as urban development regeneration instruments and in scientific discourse popular urban regression ideas associated with the major hypermarkets negative implications for urban development The survey shows that CCI that has not reached the competitive level (at least in the context of Lithuania) has little influence to development of Siauliai city, therefore hypermarkets primarily for their needs cooperating with the CCI may be considered as polyfunctional centers, who absorbs the traditional city functions, affecting not only negative, but positive processes for urban development as well, and even seen as a further urban development perspective.

Texto completo da fonteSpace, work and social relationships in a group of metalworkers’ special shift. Symbolic interaction in marginal frameworks. The research is staged in the workshops of a company in Manlleu (Barcelona) where I worked for over a decade. It is a workplace of a multinational company with an epicentre located in Barcelona, but with headquarters in the United States. The central themes of the thesis are the human relationships that occur within a cable factory, particularly in areas considered, in principle, as secondary or marginal, as the locker room or the space that is around coffee or drink machines, where occurs those micro-activities that are the foundations of the social construction of everyday reality. The approach adopted by this study, therefore, is typical of the traditional microsociology which Erving Goffman would be the most significant and known author. The objectives of the work are deliberately modest. It talks about workers, the company where they work, the factory space where they operate and the organization of which they are part. This implies that the reality here described and analyzed is the one about the "working class", the consubstantial dynamics to a production structure and a business organization dedicated to the metallurgical industry.

Texto completo da fonteDissertation Assimilation of Rustic Musical Traditions. Critical Reflections on Folk Music Recepion by Playing Music and Singing Folkorists in Poland after 1980 faces three problems: at first it is an attempt of complex description of Polish movement which reconstructs and practises rustic singing and playing music, which is a modern practising rustic musical traditions outside their native environment. The movement has been named as a practical folkorism. In the dissertation, the origins of the movement as well as its characteristic and main evolutionary tendencies have been discussed. Moreover, a specific of vocal traditional music and its assimiliation by civic performers has been also faced.Secondly, the method of fieldwork, which has not been ealier poblematised has been described. The method has arisen in the last twenty years in the backgroud of Polish practitioners of musical folklorism on the basis of the experience of avant-garde theatres and the ethnomusicological methodology of the former Soviet Republic countries. The way of working in field is founded on cathegories of encounter, experience, co-creating and the master-student relation, which joins rustic artists and folklorists from a city. It has a chance to go beyond the methodological limits of the discipline and become a Gadamer's conversation in meening of cultures' real dialogue. The meeting of rustic and urban musicans takes place on the field of non-discoursivity and the music can become the transgressive medium which makes the reception of the foreign culture easier. The folklorists who work on honest and comprehensive assimilation of the traditional music language gain the ability of touch this, what the music opens. On the basis of interpretation of folkloristic fieldwork as a hearing ethnography, which starts at the level of artistic exchange and establishes the cognitive level useful for science, the project of ethological analysis, callled a reflectivity from the dept of experience is presented. This project joins two different perspectives – the experiencing and creating source subject and analitic discourse, which produces a distance, that is essential in the culture research. Thirdly, the thesis about the presence of transcendental quality in traditional music is presented. The analysis of folkorists' statements shows, that the world of archaic thinking gets into their consciousness. To define the semantic field, conceptualized by taken from the reviews words such as mistery, energy, vitality, flow the cathegory of presence-beyond is created. It is inspired by the Heidegger's philosophy and the theology of deification (theosis) and determines the transcendent beeing concurrent to visible reality. The transcendent presence is interpreted as an experience and the promisse of experience in holistic, corporal and spiritual meaning. However, it is impossible to prove that the presence-beyond is extralinguistic state or the linguistic being, the need of presence is not eliminated beyond the line of discourse. Althought the terms used in the analysis of the metaphors faced in reviews stay secular, they reflect the relation of the art and religion in culture. What is more, the key ideas typical for folkloristic movement (such as authenticity, identity, tradition) are analised. In addition the problems of cultural change in tradition and tention between assimilation and appropriation the cultural tradition by dominant culture have been mentioned. The recognition of all these contexts shows the place of folk culture in present Polish and European culture. The folkorism is considered as a response to the modern art crisis. Considerations on the border of art theory, performatics, ethnology and theology bring us closer to the responce of the place of the religious and artistic experience in the context of culture meeting.
