The paper aims to contribute to the debate about the emergence and development of management accounting in Europe by presenting an example of management accounting in Spain in the second half of the eighteenth century. The paper deepens the case of an indianas (cotton canvas printed and dyed) factory in Barcelona, exploring the productive organization and managerial structure using the accounting books of the firm. The firm’s methods of production, work organization, product costing, and production quality control are reviewed within the political and economic context of Spain during a period of deep transformation with the enthronement of a new monarchy and a deep change in the economic policy. The evidence presented in the paper support the existence of rudimentary management accounting and control techniques in a private firm in the midst of European industrialization.

This research discussed the relationship and mechanism between trade liberalization and the wage level of enterprises. Using the firm-level data from Annual Survey of Industrial Firms(ASIF) database and tariff data from World Bank, we find that, the final goods trade liberalization will reduce the wage, while the intermediate goods trade liberalization will improve the level of enterprises' wages. And that trade liberalization affects wages through firm performance. The reduction of input tariff reduces firm’s input cost, and increases firm’s sales and profit, then the firm has more ability to provide higher wages. While the decline of output tariff damages firm’s performance, which leads enterprises to transfer the loss by reducing wages.

External stakeholder collaboration is vital for new industrial projects and establishments. The aim of this paper is to contribute to knowledge of how relations and stakeholder collaboration with trade unions can be created during industrial startups, so as to foster sustainable work and competitive advantages. A case study was carried out in the early phases of a major greenfield project aimed at establishing a new industrial domain in a Nordic context. The results show that cooperation between a new firm and trade unions has the potential to proactively address prerequisites for sustainable work in design phases of new factories, but also to strengthen the attention to other dimensions of social sustainability that are crucial for industrial startup´s long term success possibilities. However, specifically in a high—growth firm, there needs to be a systematic approach that incorporates continuous anchoring activities both within and between the stakeholders’ different levels. Serendipity in the findings were cooperation processes related to competence acquisition and societal development needed to meet both an emerging firm´s and future employee´s individual prerequisites and needs. Hence, building a stakeholder chain inspired by the Nordic model in change processes such as startups, enables attention to dimensions of social sustainability needed in work processes in early development phases, which is also beneficial from a competitive and societal perspective.

The study concluded the non-existence of the impact of financial leverage on the firm value and the relationship between the financial leverage and Tobin’s q scale was negative. However, there was an impact of each size and asset structure on firm value and the relationship between the natural logarithm of size and asset structure was positive with Tobin’s q. The study recommends that Companies must achieve an optimal mixture of debt and equity, for long-term survival and hence the growth of the company.

In this paper, we set forth a framework for solving a multiattribute group decision-making (MAGDM) problem, namely, the selection of a firm for participation in a Saudi oil refinery project in Pakistan. This project will prove a key success factor for the economic growth of Pakistan due to its enormous economic impact on the energy sector, industrial development, commerce, transportation, and so on. This multiplicity justifies that several intricate components comprising both intrinsic and external attributes should be adequately evaluated for the selection of such a firm, that is, the formulation of this question as a MAGDM problem. Nonbinary evaluation with two-dimensional ambiguity and uncertainty in the parameters are general concerns in modern literature, and they fit into this problem. Within this context, one of the most superior and amenable theories (complex spherical fuzzy N -soft sets, henceforth C S F N S f S s ) shall be used to formulate a new comprehensive method, known as complex spherical fuzzy N -soft-VIKOR ( C S F N S f -VIKOR) method. According to the general spirit of the benchmark technique, the normalized Euclidean distances and the weights of the attributes are jointly handled, and as consequence, two main features (“maximum group utility” and “minimum individual regret”) are acquired. The coefficient strategy with reference to group utility measure and individual regret measure of opponents are employed for the compromise measure. Armed with this novel tool, we single out the most feasible firm according to the preference order of the alternatives examined by the decision-makers on the subject of linear normalized weights of experts and attributes. Furthermore, a comparative analysis justifies the C S F -VIKOR method, and some results prove its capabilities and validity. Moreover, a sensitivity test certifies the stability of the proposed method.

John H. Patterson, founder and president of the National Cash Register Co. (now NCR Corp.), is best known for his innovative business practices which made the cash register a standard product, Less well-known was his program of industrial welfare for NCR employees which included many uses of horticulture. Illustrations of the landscaping contests Patterson sponsored in his factory neighborhoods are shown in a collection of early 1900's glass lantern slides recently discovered in the University of Maryland Horticulture Building attic. The noted Olmsted landscaping firm was hired to design the NCR factory grounds. Neighborhood children were given company land, tools, instructions, and awards, enabling them to grow vegetables to sell and to give to their families. Patterson created these `Boys Gardens' to occupy youngsters who might otherwise break windows in the NCR factory and give the factory neighborhood a bad reputation. Although his program of industrial welfare was unique in an era of worker exploitation, Patterson justified the program because “It pays”.

Founded by Mr. Rawal, Kooda Collection Ltd. was started in 2010 to collect waste paper from Vadodara. In contrast to the traditional operating model, where there were 4–7 intermediaries between the suppliers (households) and paper mills, Kooda Collection Ltd.’s operating model consists of being the sole intermediary between the suppliers and buyers. The firm had captured 20 percent of the market in Vadodara and was now eyeing expansion opportunities in other cities in Gujarat. Two possible options are Surat and Ahmedabad, both of which have a larger supplier base than Vadodara. Surat and Ahmedabad have large industrial bases and that is another potential source of raw material. Some of the questions on which the firm needs to take a decision are: city selected for expansion, operational challenges, supplier base to be targeted and mode of financing for expansion. The firm also has to decide whether to open a branch in the new city or run it from Vadodara.

Beginning in the early 70s, ACME, a highly innovative and successful U.S. chemical firm, began commercializing an important and versatile polymer invention. This case study chronicles the many travails faced by ACME in obtaining patent protection for its innovations in major developed economies. ACME's experiences suggest that international differences in patent regimes that stem from ideological, historical, and institutional differences are pervasive, and need to be accounted for in a company's patenting approach. International strategy in the patent area is thus inherently multi-domestic. Further, we also observe that in global industries, obtaining a modicum of exclusivity through strong patent protection in certain key markets may be adequate to preserve a firm's competitive advantage versus multinational rivals. Moreover, a firm's patent strategy seems intrinsically integrated with its continuing innovative and commercial performance.

This article reviews the influence on China’s domestic governance exerted by a high profile WTO case – the Rare Earths case. It argues that China’s domestic regulatory framework for rare earths has been phenomenally reshaped by the WTO Rare Earths case. First, China removed the export restrictions on rare earths in order to implement the WTO Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) Rulings. Second, China improved environmental legislation to facilitate its defence in the WTO Rare Earths case, and incorporated environmental protection concerns in its regulatory philosophy. Third, China invested more administrative resources in mobilizing local governments to better implement rare earths policies, which cover the mining, production, circulation, and industrial consolidation of rare earths. While the first measure was mandatory in terms of China’s obligation to implement WTO DSB rulings, the second and the third initiatives resulted from China’s voluntary adjustment of its governance in reaction to the WTO Rare Earths case. Reading China’s engagement with the WTO Rare Earths case in the broader context of China’s performance in the WTO Dispute Settlement System (DSS), it is evident that China is a firm supporter of the WTO DSS: China has kept its good record of compliance with the WTO rulings, maintained its reputation as an active player in the WTO DSS, and embraced WTO’s far-reaching impact on its domestic management regime.

The process of research and development (R&D) is characterised by improvisation, improvement and innovation based on information, knowledge and experimentation. It is the key to modern industrial development. Theoretically, firms are supposed to invest in R&D in order to enhance their existing offering and stay in business, given the competitive globalised market. The Indian economy is characterised as one of the growing global economies. Industrialisation process in India is dominated by the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). A low level of operation keeps these firms on a small budget, thus making the sector non-conducive in conducting firm-specific R&D. The current article is an empirical elucidation of the MSMEs’ industrialisation process in light of industry-specific R&D. The study is based on the Annual Survey of Industries data, analysing the national-level industrialisation process for 3 years from 2016 through 2018. The article finds that the overall MSME sector-specific R&D atmosphere in the country is not satisfactory. There is no correlation and symmetry between the level of industrialisation across states, average output and the R&D process. The findings of the article recommend a change in the industrial policy with a focus on the growth and development of industry-specific R&D.

Based on China’s transaction-level trade data and firm-level production data during the period 2000–2006, this paper firstly estimates the export cutoff productivity by applying non-parametric ROC method. The results are as follows. First, under the full sample, the export cutoff productivity is 7.051. Second, the export cutoff productivity of home enterprises is relatively low, and that of foreign enterprises is relatively high. Third, the export thresholds of capital-intensive and technology-intensive industries are relatively high, while that of labor-intensive industry is relatively low. Fourth, the export threshold of western provinces is relatively high, followed by central provinces and eastern provinces. In addition, this paper investigates the dynamic change of export threshold. The result indicates that the evolution of export threshold is generally a horizontal S-shape during the sample period, and after China’s accession to WTO in 2001, it is an inverted U-shape.

Purpose – Sales and Operations Planning (S & OP) serves as the essential cross-functional process for organizations to match supply in the form of production, inventory, and procurement with customer demand. Given recent studies revealing that S & OP is ineffective for most firms, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the critical antecedents of effective S & OP. Design/methodology/approach – Drawing on agency theory and stewardship theory, the authors develop and test a conceptual model that includes organizational integration, organizational priorities, standardized processes, and organizational engagement. The authors apply partial least squares structural equation modeling of survey data from S & OP practitioners to test the model. Findings – The results confirm the relationships among S & OP antecedents. Organizational integration positively influences a standardized S & OP process, and both the S & OP process and prioritization lead to stronger organizational S & OP engagement. Ultimately, organizational S & OP engagement is positively linked to enhanced operational, market, and profitability outcomes. Practical implications – The findings create a strong practical foundation for executing S & OP. The results also reveal a formal process for operationalizing the link between organizational integration and firm performance that is espoused but not detailed in existing literature. Originality/value – Existing research supports the potential performance impacts of S & OP but has yet to validate how to specifically operationalize S & OP.

The aim of this study is to analyse how the use of high commitment human resources practices influences, in a positive way, on the firm performance. For this purpose, a sample of 258 Spanish manufacturing companies has been used. The results indicate that the use of the raid human resources practices have a positive impact on corporate performance. In this way, the main implication of this study is that provides empirical evidence for Spanish firms of the relationship between high involvement human resource practices and performance. This represents a significant advance in human resources research in Spain, where there is a significant gap in empirical work studying this subject.<br />

In this study, we apply organizational identification theory to enrich our knowledge of the career-horizon problem when CEOs are approaching retirement. The extant literature suggests that the closer a CEO is to retirement, the more likely she or he is to avoid long-term firm investments. Focusing on capital investments, we argue that the distinctive organizational identification with the firm of lone-founder CEOs and long-tenure acquirer CEOs can moderate the likelihood that the closer a CEO is to retirement, the more likely she or he is to avoid capital investments. We test and validate our hypotheses on a sample of CEOs in S&P 1500 non-financial firms between 1999 and 2010. This article contributes to the literature on CEO career horizons by providing a new and more fine-grained perspective on the important question of how different types of CEOs consider capital investments and the future of their firms as they approach retirement.

This document reflects an analysis on the evolution of industrial design and agile methodologies, in order to identify their main characteristics and find those points in common that allow to conclude on the applicability of these methodologies, initially created for software development. , in a process as important as that of industrial design. According to what has been explored, and considering the values that agile methodologies support since their creation in 2001, it is determined that they can guide the design process to a functional, sustainable, useful, aesthetic, economic and formal result, creating a fundamental basis for a specific review of the methodologies that best apply and how to implement them within the field of industrial design. Purpose – The importance of the performance of a firm and the essential role played by the management in their accomplishment has been discussed and recognised by many researchers from Drucker to Upper Echelon Theory. Nonetheless, currently, anybody has been able to determine the precious and reliable parameters which let the firm achieve required-level performance. The confusion around this objective is still sufficient and the controversial has being growing widely over time, being the findings achieved contradictory, insufficient, imprecise and unreliable. Regarding the demographical literature findings focus on the premises previous related to Upper Echelon Theory. The purpose of this paper is to go further and try to test how, not only the level, but also the diversity of constructs like top management teams (TMT)'s demographic characteristics influence the firm performance accomplished by the managers by applying a Hierarchical Linear Regression Model. Design/methodology/approach – Based on primary data from two Spanish databases – SABI, CNMV – and secondary data, a sample size of 147 TMTs in large companies from 18 industries sector with headquarters in Spain over a four years period (2004-2007) were obtained. The analysis focused on the total TMT for each firm. To test the relationship between the company performance and the demographic constructs, a more recent methodology based on hierarchical linear models (HLMs) using a longitudinal dataset of multinational big firms with headquarters in Spain was applied. Findings – After applying the statistical techniques the results show a partial confirmation of the hypotheses formulated in the theoretical model proposed. First, the analysis evidences that company size is both highly correlated with TMT size and their demographic variables in terms of diversity. Second, the HLM shows that TMT's education-level diversity has a negative and significant impact on corporate performance and no significant effects for functionality and education background diversity have been found. Based on the accomplished findings, organisations appear to be more concerned about the employee's education level rather than their education background. Moreover, the model further supports that companies seem to be more aware of industry experience diversity than functionality diversity, also confirming a greater influence of the more international experience diversity of TMT on corporate performance. Originality/value – This study offers a significant contribution not only by specifying a three-level hierarchical regression models regarding diverse approaches to measure the performance variable as dependent variable but also by considering as predictors not only the level of the demographic variables but also their diversity. This knowledge is relevant for entrepreneurial purposes since it highlights the achievement of high performance. The results allow us to explain which constructs influence the achievement of firm performance. Thus, this knowledge could be relevant to the entrepreneurs to encourage the firm survival and growth. Furthermore, focused on an ambitious purpose, it reveals the parameters needed to achieve to get the optimums performance level. Hence, the present study contributes an attempt to advance the literature on TMT composition by applying multi-level theory given the nested structure of the data set. The paper is one of few studies which apply panel data to analyse the influences of TMT characteristics on corporate performance and one of the first focused on Spanish entrepreneurial context.

Palabras clave: sindicalismo; transición democrática; movimiento obrero; Comisiones Obreras; Unión General de TrabajadoresTopónimo: CuencaPeríodo: Transición española ABSTRACTThis article aims to contribute to the debate on the role played by trade unions as conduits of social conflict in underdeveloped provinces during the Spanish Transition. It is based on the principle that rural regions, albeit in the absence of a powerful trade union movement, became important spaces for political confrontation in the first governments of the monarchy. Cuenca stands out as the epitome of a region with limited mobilization resources that had to wait until an advanced stage of the Transition to set in motion its machinery of protest. Thus, through a detailed analysis, the importance of trade unions as conduits of social conflicts and their contributions to the democratization of Spain is studied. Furthermore, the organization and evolution of protest are examined in a context of government coercion. The strategic stimulus to economic development is innovation. It was defined by Schumpeter as the commercial or industrial application of something new (product, process, production method). New product developments grew out of process innovation, particularly the development of components made from new materials, and the techniques to produce them the value of process innovation is proportional to the level of output produced by a given firm. Based on this we can distinguish two different life cycles: the life cycle of product technology and life cycle process technology. It&rsquo;s appropriate to understand if and how long these innovation processes lead to positive economic results. The innovation capabilities are the driver of long-term success. The relation should remain significant beyond short-term earnings or become even greater for earnings of a longer-term. The length of a firm&rsquo;s innovation cycle appears to be a determinant of the relationship between enhanced innovation capabilities and future earnings. The paper proposes a framework to evaluate the impact of academic spin-offs at the local level. Spin-off creation is the most complex way of commercializing academic research but has the highest potential impact on the local context. We develop a framework that takes into account the direct and indirect impacts of spin-offs. In the empirical part of the paper, we apply this framework to a sample of Italian spin-offs between 2001 and 2017. The empirical analysis shows that measured in quantitative terms, the impact of spin-offs on the local economy is quite small. Using the selected variables, It&#39;s possible to affirm that the presence of business incubators represents an element capable of positively influencing the performance of academic spin-offs.

With the internationalization of firms from emerging-markets, the upgradation along the global value chain of emerging-market multinational enterprises (EMNEs) has attracted the attention of academics and industries. However, the role of upgradation of EMNEs in a host country to the transition of EMNEs in the home country is ignored. This study explored how EMNEs from emerging-markets could upgrade their operations in their home countries driven by the transformation of subsidiaries in host countries. An in-depth analysis of Company S was conducted to elaborate on the resources and trigger time a firm needs to transform the function of a subsidiary in the host country, and the upgradation of the firm in the home country during the internationalization process. Research on the internationalization of Company S suggested that with the complementary capabilities and markets as the fundamental basic resources, the industrial crisis triggers the firm’s upgrading in the host country. In addition, the intrafirm (internal) market mechanism makes it possible to sustain the upgrading process without conflicts between subsidiaries. Moreover, synergies will develop through interactions with subsidiaries, owing to complementary capabilities and the internal market. The synergetic development promotes the transition of firms in the home country and emphasizes the complementarity of the manufacturing and engineering service. Finally, this study demonstrates the two-stage international upgrading process, in which the international upgrading of firms in the home country is driven by the development and transition of the subsidiary in the host country, which provides contributions to the internationalization upgrading strategy and process of firms from emerging-markets.

In this study we evaluate the efficiency of the firms with DEA technique and bootstrapping procedure in eleven transition economics among sixth industrial and service sectors in a cross-section 2005. At the second stage, we study the relationship between corrected efficiency scores and possible explanatory variables. On one hand, our result shows statistically significant differences in efficiency levels across countries and sectors. Likewise, significant levels of inefficiency are identified especially in service sectors (Hotels and Restaurants, Retail and Wholesale and Transport). On the others hand, the results of the analysis in second stage confirmed the existence of a significant relationship between the country that firms operate (country-effect) and firm′s age (learning by doing). The latter relationship between age and efficiency has different behaviors according to the sector concerned, in the form of U shape in the Hotels and Restaurants, inverted U shape in Metal and Machinery and Wood and Furniture and linear in the Retail and Wholesale sector. Contrary perhaps to expectations, the results also allow us to conclude that there is no important statistically significant relationship between the efficiency and variables related to the strategies implemented by firms and the control of the property.

This paper is aimed to address an actual case study on the use of micropile technology for improving the bearing capacity of an old building. The numerical simulation results show that the load-carrying capacity of square footing utilizing micropiles is notably increased. The improvement of the bearing capacity of the foundations depends on the strengthening methods, such as inclination angle ((), length (L), and distance of micropile from the edge of footings (S). Specifically, with the same length value of pile used, the bearing capacity reaches the largest magnitude at the S/B ratios of (0.5(0.75). The use of inclined piles yields a larger magnitude of bearing capacity than the vertical ones, these obtained results are contributed to the contribution of the “confining effects” of soil mass underneaths the footing as subjected to vertical loads. Additionally, if the soil mass below the footing has a high bearing capacity (firm to stiff clayey soils, medium to dense sandy soils…) , the design value of L/B ratio in the strengthening method should be in range of (2.0÷3.0), chosing beyond that optimal range is uneconomical since the improvement of bearing capacity is insignificant. In other words, the relationship between stress bulb in soil under the footing and the length of micropile should be taken into consideration to achieve a higher economic efficiency of the strengthening method.

Protecting the environment is a matter of great importance that must be treaty very seriously, both internationally as well as nationally. The actual situation in Romania, about the economy and the state of the environment, requires the development of a program corresponding to its own interests. Given the specific situation of Romania, the transition to a strong market economy, the restructuring of the economy, the stages that we will go through this market strategy, will mark certain phases with clear objectives. The paper will present the objectives of environmental protection strategys, industrial risk analysis that affect environmental quality, environmental impact assessment methods and problems of ecological marking of the products. Based on strategies can be developed economic and environmental programs, which must be completed in order to achieve the set objectives, either macroeconomic, sectorial, regional, operative coordination (mandatory) or programs of measures at the firm level, and, why not, national plans.

This exploratory study delves into three private international schools' knowledge management (KM) practices amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Utilizing Gold et al.'s KM framework, the research examines the applicability of this model in the unique industrial context of international schools and explores the potential influence of KM on organizational performance within this context. The findings highlight that teachers proficient in articulating KM processes and infrastructure perceive their schools as more successful in the international education landscape. As schools transition back to in-person learning, leaders and stakeholders are urged to evaluate their KM practices and consider targeted initiatives to cultivate specific competencies, fostering a sustainable competitive advantage and enhancing both financial and non-financial firm performance. This study's originality lies in examining KM practices in international schools during the pandemic, stimulating conversations among school leaders and stakeholders to optimize knowledge management in the post-pandemic era.

The objective of the article is an approach to the controversial biography of Police Chief Manuel Brabo Portillo. The work is based on primary and secondary sources. The method used is empirical. In the imagery of the revolutionary syndicalist world, Brabo Portillo was the most hated policeman, the reincarnation of the murkiest face of the state. He was also a German spy connected with the sinking of Spanish ships, the murder of businessman and engineer Josep Barret and the first head of the terrorists linked to Barcelona employers. The conflict that affected Spain during the period of the First World War is fundamental in order to understand the origins of terrorism linked to pistolerismo, which marked Spanish social political history during the first third of the twentieth century.KEY WORDS: Brabo Portillo, pistolerismo, espionage, syndicalism, First World War. Purpose – This paper aims to consider the nature and role of commitment in delivering value in customer–supplier relationships by developing and testing a model of relationship cooperativeness. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected using an extended version of the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP2) Group’s instrument. Pre-qualified managers largely self-completed the survey. Model associations were tested via regression and causal path analysis. Findings – Various aspects of commitment play differing roles in relationship development. The role of commitment was less than expected; the exception is value-based commitment which is strongly associated with value creation, conflict management, trust and cooperation. Research limitations/implications – Findings provide explanations for some inconsistencies in previous findings including reported relationships between trust, cooperation and commitment. The composition of the commitment construct(s) strongly influences relationship processes. Practical implications – There are various kinds of commitment to build and multiple pathways to levering this into more effective relationships. In addition, an important part of these findings is strong indications that illustrate what the nature of ineffective commitment-building paths is likely to be. This is extremely important for managers in guiding deployment of relationship management resources and developing relationship management practice. Social implications – The regulation of close business-to-business relationships remains an important issue, and the ways in which commitment can be appropriately extended are an important part of this. Originality/value – This work focuses on the components of commitment in ways that previous work has not. The centrality of commitment in relationship value creation – beyond increased sales and revenue and predictability – is highlighted, and there is considerable extension to the understanding of the nature of this process.

With the acceleration of the global response to climate change, China announced to the world in 2020 the goals of carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060, which reflects its firm determination implement Intended Nationally Determined Contributions. Energy transition is the key to achieving the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. It is of great theoretical and practical significance to study the impact of low carbon energy transition on China?s macro-economy under the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. Based on three carbon neutrality scenarios, this paper uses the dynamic computable general equilibrium model to simulate and estimate the impact of different energy transition pathways on China?s macro-economy. The results show that under the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality target, accelerating energy transition will have a certain nega?tive impact on China?s economic growth, and different energy transition pathways have different impacts on the macro-economy. The sustainable transformation scenario that promotes energy transformation through the carbon tax policy to adjust carbon emission intensity and the renewable energy incentive policy to reduce costs has the least negative impact on the macro-economy, promoting employment growth, and optimizing industrial structure to a certain extent in the process of energy transformation. In conclusion, relevant policy recommendations are put forward for the achievement of the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, and the promotion of high quality economic development.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to argue that comparative advantage of host country’s industry can be one of the significant determinants of the decision on mergers and acquisitions (M&A) or greenfield in foreign direct investment (FDI). Design/methodology/approach The authors extract five-related properties of an industry with comparative advantage in a host nation from Bernard et al.’s (2007) international trade model with heterogeneous firms and attempt to empirically test their roles in a multinational enterprise’s (MNE) M&A or greenfield investment decision, using the inward FDI data set in Korea from 1999 to 2006. Findings The theoretical framework finds that the five properties derived from an industry with comparative advantage in a host country have mixed motives for M&A or greenfield. The empirical results show that selected conventional independent variables generally affect the M&A or greenfield entry mode decision with significance individually and that their impacts become more or less prominent when the authors employ interaction terms combining them with comparative advantages in the industries. Research limitations/implications This implies that MNEs not only consider their own firm-specific advantages or other country-level factors for foreign market entries as the previous research generally found, but also seriously take into account industry-specific factors, especially industry-wide comparative advantages based on heterogeneous productivities of firms. Originality/value This paper reconciles multinationals’ strategic motives under an oligopolistic market with their efficiency gains under a monopolistic competitive market, which are considered as two main factors for cross-border M&A. Furthermore, this paper adds a new firm-level data set into entry mode research.

Unlike countries like United Kingdom, France or The United States, Spain never had a remarkable tradition in the field of Crime Fiction. This lack of solid tradition was the consequence of different causes like censorship, a bad consideration at editorial level and the lack of a deep industrial revolution which brings the urban conflicts which make this type of literature emerge. With the arrival of the democratic Transition, these transformations took place and, as a consequence of this, Spanish Crime Fiction experiments and amazing development born, precisely, with the aim of building up a critical portrait over this political phenomenon and its most relevant milestones taking the hard boiled literary trend from the North American authors as model. Being this one the context reflected by the Juan Madrid´s noir trilogy on Transition, this article intends to display an approach to it and its role as an unbeatable platform to rise up a critical review of this period from three perspectives: the political, the social and economical and that in relation to the media.

The usual strategic analysis perceives the external business environment fragmentarily and without a coherent and unifying way. The three levels that a typical analysis of the external business environment involves are a) the macroenvironment and PEST analysis, b) mesoenvironment and &ldquo;Porter&rsquo;s diamond&rdquo;, and c) industrial environment and &ldquo;Porter&rsquo;s five forces&rdquo;. Contrary to the fragmentary analysis of the three levels, this article aims to counter-propose a restructured method of a unified and evolutionary analysis of the external business environment. After presenting the usual analytical handling of the external business environment in the three levels, we suggest that these are rather co-evolving than separate and autonomous spheres of analysis. Therefore, after introducing some elements of the evolutionary socioeconomic theory, we propose a systemic web that perceives the external environment of the socioeconomic organisations in dynamically unified and evolutionary terms. The systemic web conceptualises the approach of the external socioeconomic environment as an open and interactive system comprising three co-evolving spheres in the context of global dynamics: the institutional character of each spatially structured socioeconomic formation; the firm&rsquo;s functions within the system; and the public-state intervention that contributes to the establishment and reproduction of the system. This conceptual redirection of the methodology of the external business environment can be useful for building an integrated strategic analysis that studies all &ldquo;micro-meso-macro&rdquo; components of the entire socioeconomic system.

The high competition in the business world with many competitors has forced the company to develop its business, one of them by diversification. This study aims to investigate the influence of diversification level, segment numbers, and industrial sector types on firm performance measured by the excess value. The theory underlying this research is agency theory, which describes the relationship between the company owner with the company management, The number of samples of this study are 333 companies from miscellaneous industry sector, and consumer goods sector, and basic industry and chemicals sector listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange throughout 2017 – 2018. The results showed that data can be pooled for 3 years, all classic assumption tests are fulfilled, and partial regression coefficient test found that variable diversification level and variable number of segments > 0.05, then Ho1 and Ho2 rejected, while type of miscellaneous industry sector and Type of consumer goods sector <0.05, then Ho3 and Ho4 received. The conclusion showed that variable diversification level and variable number of segments has not sufficient evidence of negative effect on excess value, while type of miscellaneous industry sector and Type of consumer goods sector sufficient evidence of negative effect on excess value. Topónimos: Reino de GranadaPeriodo: siglo XVIII ABSTRACTThe objective of this article is to study the use of pack animal transport in the Kingdom of Granada in the 18th century using the data from the Respuestas Generales y el Libro General Secular de Industrial de Granada of the Cadastre of Ensenada. To that end, the following have been listed and quantified: number of beasts, and regulated use by the muleteers of the Kingdom of Granada employing a methodology that combines source analysis with digital humanities (databases) and statistics.Given the the heterogeneous nature of the data, these are classified into five categories, depending on the information obtained with regard to regulation by traffic, muleteer or pack animal. To evaluate the economic impact of muleteering, the following were calculated: number of pack animals, uses at territorial (i.e. counties and towns) and individual level. Analysis of the data provides a starting point for a better understanding of muleteering in the Kingdom of Granada, and relates this activity to elements such as temporality, the commercial-economic hubs and the main internal communication routes. Purpose of the study: The main aim of this study is to propose the conceptual model for developing frontline employees’ behavioural engagement towards value co-creation. Methodology:This research has useda qualitative approach to explain how service firms’ attempt to create value for their frontline employees by facilitating interaction capabilities. Secondly, how facilitation of interaction capabilities help the service firm to engage the frontline employees to co-create the value with the customers, thus,to answer the research questions towardsthe development of a conceptual model through the lens of value co-creation, this studywas conducted(a) in-depth literature review and (b)input from 6 industrial and academic experts. Principal Findings: Through the theoretical support of the S-O-R Model and expectancy theory, the studyconcluded that frontline employees’behavioural engagement in value co-creation mainly depends on interaction capabilities and their motivation. Frontline employee's motives are derivedthrough their expectancies, which they perceive from the service interaction. The capabilities are mainlyfacilitated by the service firms, which, in turn, motivate the frontline employees towards their engagement in value co-creation. Applications of this study: The proposed model has practical implications in complex service settings like automotive, Oil and Gas sectors where frontline employees’ have regular service interaction with the customers. Novelty/Originalityof this study: The proposed model has been developed by taking the theoretical implications of the S-O-R model by focusing on frontline employees’behavioural engagement in value co-creation. However, previous literature on value co-creation has concentrated more on the customer's domain.

Numerous social and economic problems are brought on by urbanisation, including worse-than-ever housing shortages in emerging nations and an increase in the number of people living unlawfully in slums without permits or property rights. This is also applicable to Ethiopia. The investigation of the factors influencing Addis Ababa&rsquo;s commercial real estate market performance was the study&rsquo;s principal goal. Explanatory sequential mixed method design was used in the study, which took a mixed research strategy. Senior specialists, top business leaders, and other professionals from 35 commercial real estate developers active in Addis Abeba made up the study sample for the quantitative phase. It was decided to employ 163 of the 231 structured and self-administered sets of questions that were provided. This resulted in an actual response rate of 71%, which was deemed both necessary and sufficient for running the relevant statistical analyses. 15 key informants from important government ministries or agencies, as well as relevant industrial sectors, were chosen to participate in in-depth interviews for the qualitative phase of the study. Only ten significant informants, however, volunteered to be interviewed. The quantitative study&rsquo;s findings revealed that every factor&mdash;firm efficiency, supplier dependability, and customer purchase intentions, as well as credit availability, marketing strategy, legal considerations, land availability, infrastructure development, technological adoption, and leadership quality&mdash;had a significant and positive impact on Addis Ababa&rsquo;s commercial real estate market performance. The qualitative analysis found that additional variables such as political and economic instability, the degree of coordination and stakeholder participation, political interference, and house purchasers&rsquo; purchasing power influenced commercial real estate performance. To improve performance, the researcher suggests that real estate enterprises adopt an effective strategy that focuses on performance-improving variables and collaborate closely with the government and other stakeholders. Finally, the proposed framework for measuring performance in the commercial real estate business should guide commercial real estate developers.

Resumo:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of mediation on two long-running collective industrial disputes in Ireland using a theoretical framework established in the literature. Design/methodology/approach – The paper presents a detailed qualitative analysis of two disputes. In both cases a panel of mediators was invited to intervene when the established dispute resolution structures and processes had failed and impasse had been prolonged. Each member of the mediation panels, and the lead union representative, was interviewed about their perception of the mediation process and its impact. Interview questions centred around a set of mediation “Outcome Determinants” identified by Wall et al. (2001). Following Wall et al.'s proposal, Lewin's (1951) Force Field Analysis theory is applied as a theoretical lens for understanding the subtle impact of mediation in these cases. Findings – The empirical evidence suggests that while mediation did not lead directly to settlement, it influenced the resolution of these disputes. The disputes were a-typical in that most collective disputes in Ireland are resolved through established industrial relations structures and processes, either at firm level or through State-funded agents/agencies. However, intractable disputes occur periodically and there is an on-going need of this type of specialised ad hoc mediation. The Wall et al. framework combined with Force Field Analysis theory, provide a theoretical lens through which these disputes can be analysed and understood. Practical implications – An understanding of the nuanced impact of mediation is useful for justifying the continuation of this valuable approach. There is also some scope for predicting the likely impact of mediation in advance of engagement or at least allowing the mediators to explore the status of the Outcome Determinants related to a specific case in order to develop a tailored mediation strategy. Originality/value – This paper is unique in that it takes an existing theoretical framework and tests its application in two case disputes. The value of the framework is thus highlighted. Further application of the framework to other dispute scenarios would facilitate its development as a tool of understanding and some limited prediction. Mediation in this type of context has not been formally researched before. Public policy and theoretical implications of the work are highlighted in the concluding section.
