Texto completo da fonteThis study is dedicated to the psychophysiological revision of Kant's epistemology by Friedrich-Albert Lange (1828-1875) and Hermann von Helmholtz (1821-1894). I assert that this procedure does not lead to a psychological reduction of knowledge, which would eliminate the possibility for a judicative objectivity (contrary to what several commentators claim). On the contrary, this procedure modifies Kant's necessary and universal conditions of possibility of experience to preserve a second-order reflection on the reasons that give objectivity to the judgments of a scientific theory. I demonstrate that the epistemology developed by these two authors can be described as "methodological naturalism" and shares with the naturalized epistemology developed in the twentieth century by Willard von Orman Quine (1908-2000) a series of analogous argumentative strategies that essentially explain "how evidence relates to theory, and in what ways one's theory of nature transcends any available evidence." (Quine, 1969, 83) To argue that such a naturalized epistemology exists in the nineteenth century, we divide the study into three parts. The first section (chapters one and two) introduces the concept of "epistemological naturalism" and examines its doctrinal and conceptual consequences. The second section (chapters three, four and five) argues that placing Kantian epistemology within a naturalized conceptual framework does not imply the elimination of a second-order reflection on the reasons that legitimize a judicative objectivity in favor of a simple study of the psychophysical causes of perception and the judgments that relate to it. The third section (chapters six and seven) is devoted to the question of the objectivity of logical-mathematical judgements, and more specifically to their intuitive significance in psychophysical experience. From these three sections, I demonstrate that the naturalized epistemology of Helmholtz, Lange and Quine mobilizes structurally analogous argumentative strategies despite radically different historical and conceptual contexts. At the end of each section are concluding comparative remarks that highlight (as far as possible) these analogous argumentative strategies used in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries

Texto completo da fonteStarting with a distinction between the motives for, the suggestion of external world skepticism, and the demand for a proof or demonstration of the existence of bodies, we first try to analyse the naturalist response to skepticism, as defined and endorsed by Peter Strawson, asking to what category it must belong in order to be maximally efficient. Identifying it to a concessive theoretical diagnosis (part 1), we then question Strawson’s claim that his naturalist treatement of external world skepticism can also be found in Hume as well as in Reid. Underlying Hume’s endeavours to define a mitigated skepticism as the correction of the undistinguished doubts of excessive skepticim by common sense and reflection (part 2), we are led to see how closer is Reid’s criticism of skepticism and defence of common sense realism, in their own context, to Strawson’s epistemic naturalism (part 3)

Texto completo da fonteFrom the Aquitaine Basin to the Languedocian Piedmont, the Southern part of the Massif Central of France is a classically studied province in the field of the Earth sciences, an area about which numerous data and interpretation have been amassed since the endof the Eighteenth century. After an introductory chapter (methodology), the first part of the work consists in a critical review and analysis of a selection of texts and various illustrations, indicative of a gradual change in both the perception and understanding of landforms among geologists and geographers all along the 19th and the 20th centuries. The second part is a detailed description of landforms using the explanatory method. The main part of the field studies consisted in observations and cartography to discriminate regular from peculiar features of the landscape. Three chapters respectively deal, firstly with the Lacaune and Haut-Dourdou area, Espinouse, Caroux, Escandorgue (i. E. The highlands), secondly with a transect going from the highlands to the west (Sidobre, Castrais, i. E. The aquitanian lowlands) and thirdly with a transect going from the highlands to the south (Avant-Monts, i. E. The languedocian lowlands). Even if the Earth's surface can be considered as a continuum, it must be emphasized that, concerning the topography, heterogeneousness is not the exception but the rule. Because large scale landforms are issued from a complex evolution that integrates in a whole and unique succession numbers of facts and events which, with time, are all connected by strong links of causality, the last chapter discusses a possible scenario for the individualization of the southern border of the Massif Central

Texto completo da fonteThis dissertation shows that Fritz Mauthner’s (1849-1923) famous “critique of language” should be understood as a unique mode and style of attack on the literary cultures and ideological codes of his time, characterized by the development of print media. His work was unique because, through his critiques of literary, journalistic, and scholarly writings, Mauthner developed a powerful form of immanent critique of language that engaged typical forms of thought in that period as it was embedded within the topoi of late nineteenth century Berlin practices of writing. By adopting and repeating the period’s chauvinistic and anti-Semitic clichés he exposed – through modes of irony and parody – their failures and anti-modernistic images. By contextualising all of Mauthner’s late nineteenth century writings, in particular his critical approaches to modern literature, this work reconstructs Mauthner’s unmasking of modernity’s constitutive paradoxes through the links that he revealed between literary, scholarly, and philosophical modernity

Texto completo da fonteExploring the diversity of living being in the deep sea is a recent story. It is only from the nineteenth century, on a virgin land of all knowledge, both geological and biological, that scientists gradually reveal the presence of organisms, usually on the occasion of expedition for economic purposes. For example, the laying of telegraphic cables has unexpectedly discovered organisms, which has initiated the interest of naturalists for the deep sea fauna. Today, the knowledge of the diversity of life in the depths remains partial. Biologists often face the novelty and the unexpected, which gives rise to an original regime for the production of scientific knowledge based on the description, which itself is based on hypotheses that are rarely explained and that are based on a state of incomplete knowledge. On the other hand, it is often economic interests (turned towards mining or fishing) that guide explorations of the diversity of the deep sea towards certain zones. The present doctoral work develops a scientific, historical and epistemological approach of the marine explorations and of the knowledge on biodiversity produces by this program. It is a question of characterizing the transformation of the scientific representations of the fauna and its diversity in the depths and of identifying the factors and the possible methodological biases which determine the acquisition and the structure of this knowledge. This work is based on a large corpus of documents related to the oceanographic cruises program, initiated in 1976 and conducted jointly by the MNHN (National Museum of Natural History) and the IRD (Research Institute for Development), called " Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos "(TDSB), formerly" MUSORSTOM ". This informal program of naturalist exploration has for forty years been targeting the intertropical zone, mainly in the Indo-West Pacific. Much of the work involved structuring and making available the data and knowledge gained during this program in the MNHN databases. In particular, it has helped to develop and complete the MNHN expedition database (expeditions.mnhn.fr), which aims to provide not only a geographical repository to which the other MNHN databases can refer, but also to document the metadata associated with the expeditions (role and specialty of the scientists participating in the cruises, mission reports, photographs of the specimens and substrate). At the same time, a bibliographic repository has been designed that links publications to different campaigns. This structuring of data in a broad sense makes it possible to formulate hypotheses on the way in which the representations of biodiversity and the explanations related to it are constructed. The analysis of this corpus of publications was conducted in two steps. A first descriptive approach made it possible to identify historical and geographical trends as well as hypotheses on the factors that structure the dataset obtained. A second approach aimed to support these hypotheses by finely analyzing the content of publications. Since most of these publications refer to a descriptive taxonomy field, this analysis highlights constants and evolutions in the practices of this disciplinary field. In addition to the analysis of the documents associated with the program, a contextualization work carried out from fifteen interviews of researchers makes it possible to situate the TDSB program in the more general history of deep-sea exploration

Texto completo da fonteThis work in theology has for object the study of the relation between science and theology, considered as two understandings of the world. The study starts with a set of scientific authors, philosophers and theologians. A first stage puts the problem from sciences. It reveals a diversity of approaches which lead to examine the question of naturalism at work in science and in philosophy. Naturalism shows itself more differentiated than it appears at first sight. The reflection continues with theologians. It consists in studying the way they thought about the relation between science and theology. This examination indicates a difference between theologians with a scientific origin and others because of a different relationship to science. The study also shows that the relation between science and theology entails the mediation of philosophy according to different perspectives: theism, philosophy of nature, metaphysics. These perspectives condition the possibility of a natural theology and the place which is granted to it. They also show that the consideration of scientific understanding of the world has philosophical and theological consequences. This requires to think, for example, about causality in work in nature and consequently about God’s action in the world
