Texto completo da fonteThe research, developed within the framework of the doctorate conducted in cotutorship between Sorbonne Université in Paris and the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology in Rome, focused on the origin of Christianity on the two shores of the southern Red Sea between the 4th and 8th centuries. If the historical and literary sources present an early evangelisation of these regions, dated to the second half of the 4th century, the archaeological and material data show that the new religion did not begin to leave transgressible traces of its presence until the 6th century. Starting from the re-examination of all the published material supplemented with new data from the recent excavations conducted by the Italian-Pontifical mission engaged, between 2017 and 2020, in the Eritrean site of Adulis, it has been possible to reconstruct a new picture of the Christianisation of these areas peripheral to the Mediterranean world that has highlighted how the southern Red Sea regions represent a true crossroads of cultures, societies, ideas and beliefs that are clearly visible both in the coexistence of the three great monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) and in the stylistic mix that animates the architectural, iconographic and decorative material evidence present in Christian cult buildings. In fact, the latter represent a perfect synthesis of the architectural models of reference of the Mediterranean basin, in particular the Syrian-Palestinian area, Egypt and North Africa, which reach these regions thanks to the extensive communication network of land and sea routes that place this area at the centre of the intricate system of connections between East and West

Texto completo da fonteIn the aftermath of the September 11th 2001 attacks, the Red Sea region experienced an important geopolitical remodeling, to be analyzed in depth. December 2001, the strait of Bab El-Mandab was placed under the strict surveillance of the French, German and Spanish battleships, in the framework of the anti-terrorist operation Enduring Liberty, led by the United States. The Goal of this operation is to supervise communications between Somalia and Yemen, whose geographies and tribalism could allow combatants, from Al-Qaida escaping from Afghanistan (after the fall of the Taliban in November 2003) and Pakistan, to take refuge in the mountainous areas by the coast of Yemen or to take advantage of the chaotic situation generated by the Non-State which reigns for more than a decade in a segmented divided Somalia, dominated by tribes and clans which could try to take advantage from here or there

Texto completo da fonteBordered by two powerful states prevailing on the geopolitical regional scenery, the northern red sea, a major route of communications, is also at the heart of a space full of transversal links. On both sides of the seaboard space, networks are emerging and a regional framework is appearing, structured with interfaces. These elements confer to this area, identified by a number of discontinuities, some features and a dynamic related to what can be called a geographical system

Texto completo da fonteMiocene sedimentation, contemporaneous with initial rifting of the Red Sea basin, has been strongly influenced by distensional tectonics. The beginning of the rifting is characterised by normal movements along N140 faults, and strike-slip of N-S and E-W faults. The resulting structural troughs, elongated NW-SE, received continental Miocene sediments of Group A (25 MY); they were supplied by erosion of moderate relief to the Est. Subsequently, all structural directions functioned as normal faults, subsidence leading to marine environments. Two secondary basins are distinguished in the Quseir area. Ln the North the Zarib Basin is characterised by an irregular morphology (horsts and grabens); and a southern Bahari Basin, which subsided earlier, is characterised by the regularity of its morphology. The morphological contrast is directly responsible for differenciation into talus and platform facies. Lnitialy, sedimentation is mixed terrigenous and carbonate (Group B) ; horsts correspond to clearly defined bathymetric highs favouring development of shallow carbonates and these tend to block the transit of silici-clastics sediments. The structural escarpments are overlain by spectacular sedimentary talus. Ultimately, general restriction of the basin lead the deposition of Group C evaporitic which drown the morpho-structural relief. An intense dolomitisation has affected all carbonates
