Resumo:
In tropical marine systems, water quality, coral health, fish habitat productivity and various other factors (e.g.: water temperature, salinity, turbidity) are all inter-related. Therefore, shoreline development, and the related design and construction of waterfront projects, may have a significant impact on the marine environment, both positive and negative, depending on the location and quality of science, engineering, and marine ecology undertaken during design, construction, and monitoring. Evaluating the physical, ecological, and social impacts of coastal projects after construction is rarely undertaken in any quantitative manner, if at all. As part of our standard process, we include monitoring for a period of 2- 5 years to quantify shoreline stability, water quality impacts, and increases in biological production as well as biodiversity. To determine when environmental arguments against development are valid and to counter those against research due to time and cost pressures, the goal is to identify what is important for minimizing environmental impacts of development.

Resumo:
According to the number of environmental management practices implemented by the firm and the degree of integration of environmental management with other functions of the firm, this study divides environmental management into two dimensions: environmental management breadth and environmental management depth. We argue that the impact of environmental management breadth on manufacturing performance is moderated by environmental management depth. A survey data including 225 Chinese manufacturing firms is used to test the hypotheses. Results show that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between environmental management breadth and manufacturing performance; the impact of environmental management depth is positive; meanwhile, environmental management depth moderates the relationship between environmental management breadth and manufacturing performance.

The article examines the conceptual principles of strategic management of environmental and economic security in the context of the national economy. It has been substantiated that the application of strategic management will allow to analyze and determine the trend of changes in the parameters of exogenous and endogenous influence on the state of ecological and economic security, innovativeness and relevance of measures of state influence. The purpose of the article is to form the conceptual foundations of the system of strategic state management of environmental and economic security. It has been determined that the strategic state management of ecological and economic security is an expression of a systemic approach to substantiating the principles and methods of ensuring the interaction of the elements of the management system, It should be defined as a set of management decisions aimed at ensuring the prospects for the implementation of organizational and economic mechanisms of state management. It has been noted that measures of strategic management of environmental and economic security are characterized by a clear sequence of implementation stages and a structured content of each stage, while the process of strategic management of security requires the formation of an appropriate management structure. The main tasks of the system of strategic management of ecological and economic security, functions and sequence of implementation of the specified process has been defined. The condition for the implementation of the strategic management is its integration into the complex mechanism of national security management, the action of which will contribute to the improvement of relations between all branches of state and regional administration. The key characteristics of strategic management of environmental and economic security in the context of a systemic approach are has been proposed such as integrity, complexity, synergy, functionality, heterogeneity, emergentity.

Environmental Landscape Management (ELM) is an extension education program developed to promote resource conservation and environmental protection through appropriate landscape design and maintenance practices. Use of ELM practices by Florida home owners and landscape professionals will conserve energy and water, recycle yard wastes, and reduce inputs of fertilizers and pesticides. Site analysis and appropriate landscape design and plant selection are inherent components of ELM. Guidelines for ELM integrate irrigation, fertilization, pest control, recycling of yard wastes and other cultural practices to result in a holistic approach to landscape management. Five videos, 3 slide sets, 20 newspaper releases, and a 45-page booklet, The Florida Environmental Landscape Guide, have been produced to support ELM. This information also will be available on CD-ROM in each county extension office.

Although airports contribute to region's economic development, they have a negative impact on the environment and on the communities around them. Environmental impacts such as noise, air and water pollution, and natural resources consumption are some of the implications resulting from the operation of airports that have the ability to constrain airports further development. In addition, increased public concern, regarding climate change, imposes more restrictions on carbon use and greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, many airports can no longer make full use of their capacity, especially when the mitigating cost is quite high. This paper is about airports environmental management and presents the results related to key components of the environmental plans that have been adopted in eight European regional airports. Key issue of the research is to investigate the differences and common practices in applied environmental strategies and systems. Even though most of the airports recognize the need to specify an environmental management strategy, not many regional airports have set specific targets about their environmental performance. Airports that serve more than five million passengers per year seem to have a more detailed environmental strategy; airports located in countries that do not have applied specific sustainable development strategies focus on facilitating growth, rather than taking measures to control their environmental disturbance.

PurposeGreen human resource management (GHRM) and sustainable green logistics (SGLOG) are some of the mechanisms by which sustainable corporate environmental management could be consummated. However, prior studies linking GHRM and green logistics are lacking in the literature. This paper extends prior efforts by developing a model linking GHRM and SGLOG.Design/methodology/approachAn integrative review of extant literature on green human resource management and sustainable green logistics was conducted, and an integrative model developed.FindingsImproving environmental performance is a key way that businesses can improve their corporate social responsibility and brand image. The resulting model includes expanded components of GHRM (training, development, compensation, awards and recognition, recruitment, and performance management) and of SGLOG (transportation and shipping, warehousing, packaging, and reverse logistics). Categories of shipping and transportation include the following facets: transportation intensity, modal split, emissions intensity, energy efficiency, and vehicle utilization efficiency. The model also highlights the mediating role of management and employee attitudes, knowledge, and skills in the GHRM-SGLOG link, as well as their interaction.Research limitations/implicationsGreen human resource management is associated with sustainable green logistics. This association is theoretically mediated by management and employee attitudes, knowledge, and skills. Top management support and influence of other stakeholders are key facilitators.Practical implicationsThe paper suggests potential barriers to GHRM and SGLOG adoption/diffusion and panaceas. It also proposes some key drivers of sustainable green logistics and corporate environmental management.Firms must carry out their operations in ways that do not compromise societal and environmental well-being. High economic performance alone no longer suffice. A balanced performance that also emphasizes social and environmental well-being (the triple bottom line, 3BL) can be achieve through the implementation of the proposed model.Originality/valueThe integrative model presented in the paper advances the current understanding of the link between GHRM and SGLOG. The paper adds additional value by unveiling some key future research directions.
