Providing a concise introduction to the field of occupational and environmental medicine, this book delves into what it does, how it protects workers, how it benefits employers, and how it is developing as an important field in health protection. This book shines a light on an important but little-appreciated corner of medicine where health, technology, the environment, and the economy come together to have a real impact on people and society. The text serves as one of the few entry points into the world of occupational and environmental health protection for readers interested in learning more about it and what it can do for them. Readers will be introduced to such topics as the history of occupational and environmental medicine (OEM), schools of thought associated with OEM, the relationship of OEM to neighboring fields of study, and profiles of OEM practitioners. This guide emphasizes the rich potential for environmental medicine to contribute to sustainability, public health, and community health protection, making it an essential resource for anyone interested or involved in these sectors.

This book is an accessible and practical core text on the three domains of health protection: Communicable Disease Control, Emergency Preparedness Resilience and Response (EPRR), and protection of the public from environmental hazards (Environmental Public Health). The editors have attempted to develop an “all hazards approach” to dealing with health protection situations. Most health protection books confine themselves to one of the three domains, whereas this book presents a practical and all hazards approach, with some account of the overarching principles of health protection on which day-to-day practice rests. The target audience is health protection practitioners, students, doctors, nurses and other non-medical professionals who may encounter health protection issues in their daily practice. From a clear introduction to the essential principles of health protection work, the book guides readers through how to manage real health protection incidents using a combination of case studies and quick reference action checklists. Each case study provides a common health protection scenario which develops in stages, in the same way as a real-life case or incident. As the story unfolds, the reader will learn about the nature and significance of the specific threat to population health, the practical steps and issues involved in an effective public health response and the health protection principles underpinning that response. Other chapters outline the general principles of health protection, providing a deeper understanding of key tools and mechanisms, as well as insights into new and emerging health protection issues. A series of individual checklists dealing with a broad range of commonly-faced diseases, hazards and incidents complete the book. These give concise and practically-focused information that can be used even by non-specialists in time-pressured situations. In particular, the variety of chapters covered throughout the book, on Communicable Diseases, Emergency Preparedness Resilience and Response, and Environmental Public Health, offer a unique perspective borne out of practical experience, not easily accessible elsewhere.

Environmental public health scientists and health protection practitioners are constantly challenged to respond to new or poorly understood hazards. Practitioners might also be required to address well-characterized hazards that have either increased in magnitude or re-emerged in different situations. Developing technological advances and new and emerging industrial processes (such as fracking, nanotechnology, shale gas, waste fires) can raise difficult questions for the public health practitioner, especially where research and health-related evidence is lacking. In these cases, public health science has a key role in undertaking and communicating risks and in providing the most accurate available scientific evidence and public health advice. The field of environmental public health is crowded with complex problems demanding our attention. It is impossible to devote sufficient clinical, research, and advocacy energies to all of these problems at once. Clinicians, public health professionals, and environmental public health scientists have to choose which health issues take priority.

This book explains how studies in brain development and epigenetics—the inextricable interplay of genes and environments—have led to breakthroughs in the understanding of children's psychological disturbances and serve to discredit the scientifically unsupported "chemical imbalance theory" of mental illness. Intended for mental health practitioners, concerned parents, and child advocates alike, this book presents a powerful new paradigm for understanding the causes of children's psychological disturbances—and as a result, the proper treatment of these symptoms. Based in cutting-edge research on the developing brain and epigenetics, this important volume serves to inform readers about the latest scientific conclusions and clinical practices that need to supplant pervasive and often dangerous drug prescriptions to millions of children. Sharna Olfman, PhD, and contributors including leading researchers, clinicians, and childhood advocates present their research findings and explain the implications for treatment of a range of symptoms, including autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), concussion syndromes, and mood disorders. The book definitively lays to rest the "chemical imbalance theory" of mental illness, a theory that has been roundly discredited by the scientific community but kept alive by the pharmaceutical industry. Chapters focus on the real science of epigenetics and the sensitivity of the developing brain to environmental influences such as trauma and chemical toxins—legitimate research findings that are largely ignored by mental health practitioners and rarely influence practice.

Few contributions to the field concerning the current opioid crisis in the United States focus sufficient attention on the public health aspects of the epidemic and share examples that practitioners can use to prevent opioid use disorder and the broader issues of substance misuse and addiction. A great deal of prior published work has concentrated on health care and clinical perspectives related to the crisis, including developing prescribing guidelines, enhancing prescription drug monitoring programs, scaling up access to overdose reversal medication, and making medication-assisted treatment more widely available nationwide. This book adds to and complements this prior work by addressing the central tenets of the public health approach to the opioid crisis. Topics include how to best support community-based, primary prevention of substance misuse and addiction in various settings with diverse populations and how to effectively address the cultural, social, and environmental aspects of health that are driving the epidemic. Chapters describe how governmental public health agencies play a significant role in responding to the epidemic, in both public health’s traditional approach to disease surveillance and control and contemporary approaches to health promotion that include building community resilience, addressing the impact of adverse childhood events, and mitigating the root causes of addiction community-wide. This volume can be used to explore what it means to address primary prevention of addiction and how public health practitioners have led efforts to promote “opioid stewardship” at the local, state, and federal levels.

It describes cutting edge research across developmental, clinical, counseling, and school psychology; social work; neuroscience; and psychopharmacology. TheHandbookemphasizes the development of individual differences in resilience and mental health concerns, including social, environmental, and epigenetic influences across the life span, particularly during childhood. TheHandbookis a primer for practitioners and researchers, and is a guide for clinics and oversight bodies responsible for decision making regarding training of staff and the evaluation of treatment effectiveness. TheHandbookis appropriate reading for students in graduate programs in psychology, social work, and counseling. ThisHandbookpresents work by experts from multiple disciplines to readers who otherwise might have difficulty gaining direct access to the works by these authors. Detailed discussions are offered that expand on areas of research and practice that already have a substantive research base, such as self-regulation, resilience, defining evidence-based treatment, and describing client-related variables that influence treatment processes. TheHandbookalso includes chapters devoted to newer areas of research (e.g., neuroimaging, medications as adjuncts to psychological treatment, and the placebo effect). Additionally, it includes chapters that address treatment outcomes, such as evaluating therapist effectiveness, examining treatment outcomes from different perspectives, and assessing the length of treatment necessary to achieve clinical improvement. TheHandbookprovides entrée into research as well as “hands on” guidance and suggestions for practice and oversight, making it a valuable resource for graduate students, seasoned practitioners, researchers, and agencies alike.

Poverty & Development in the 21st Century provides an updated, interdisciplinary overview of one of the world's most complex and pressing social problems. The book analyses and assesses key questions faced by practitioners and policy makers, ranging from what potential solutions to world poverty are open to us to what form development should take and whether it is compatible with environmental sustainability. This third edition considers the complex causes of global poverty and inequality, introducing major development issues that include hunger, disease, the threat of authoritarian populism, the refugee crisis, and environmental degradation. Three new chapters illustrate the impact of climate, refugee and health crises on development by drawing on accounts of lived experience to explore the real-world implications of theory.

Contaminated sediments represent an ongoing threat to the health of aquatic ecosystems. The assessment of sediment quality is, therefore, an important concern for environmental regulators. Sediment quality guidelines are now well established in regulatory frameworks worldwide; however, practical guidance that covers all of the key aspects of sediment quality assessment is not readily available. In 2005, CSIRO published its highly cited Handbook for Sediment Quality Assessment. In the ensuing period, the science has advanced considerably. This practical guide is a revised and much expanded second edition, which will be a valuable tool for environmental practitioners. Written by experts in the field, it provides coverage of: sediment sampling; sample preparation; chemical analysis; ecotoxicology; bioaccumulation; biomarkers; and ecological assessment. In addition, detailed appendices describe protocols for many of the tests to be used.

This chapter explores how the transition from prison to the community can lead to poor health outcomes, especially substance-related health complications. These adverse health effects may occur via one or more of the following mechanisms: (1) the toxic effects of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs; (2) health behaviors associated with using or acquiring substances or under the influence of substances, as well as poor chronic disease self-management; (3) conditions that are acquired, exacerbated, or progress as a result of the “downstream” social, behavioral, occupational, and economic consequences of addiction; and (4) institutional, policy, environmental, and social contexts that do not support maximum well-being and health. These conceptual categorizations, while not exhaustive, may help practitioners, policymakers, and public health officials design appropriately targeted preventive and intervention strategies. People released from prisons should also be included in broader public health efforts to reduce the risk of overdose and address substance-related harms.

Risk Factors for Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke describes environmental and genetic determinants for cerebrovascular disease and stroke from the perspective of an international group of neurologists, epidemiologists, and geneticists who are at the forefront of research and education on these issues. Unlike other books in the field, which solely deal with physiology, diagnosis, and management of stroke, this essential book discusses prevention factors as well as the causes. This unique book takes a comprehensive approach to risk prediction while integrating epidemiological, genetic, and statistical principles explained in a way that is easy for the clinical trainee to understand. The section on genetic risk factors for various types of stroke is unique in its depth and up-to-date information. Clinicians, residents, fellows and academics in neurology, geriatrics, internal medicine, epidemiology, genetics, public health professionals, and preventative cardiologists, as well as nurses, practitioners and physician assistants will find this a handy source for years to come.

In 2015, the United Nations General assembly adopted a set of 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs), including goals to further reduce poverty, hunger and inequality and to improve education, health, cities, economic wellbeing, environmental conditions and access to water and energy. Science, technology and innovation (STI) will play critical roles if these connected SDGs are to be achieved. This book provides an interdisciplinary lens to understand the potential roles and contributions of STI in meeting the SDGs, and the challenges and requirements for that to occur. Its three main sections address these issues for energy and environment, health, and agriculture. In 26 chapters by 71 authors from 18 countries, the book covers a multitude of pressing problems and current opportunities, with an emphasis on the role of STI in developing countries. It focuses on stakeholder involvement in successful application of STI and SDGs. It also offers recommendations to policymakers and practitioners on how STI can be harnessed to deliver the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the SDGs.

After decades of research devoted to women's health, a federal agency focused on women's health, and millions of dollars allocated to address women's health disparities, African American women are still the sickest American citizens. This book examines why. Written by an all-female, all-African American team of health experts that include nurse practitioners, registered nurses, educators, and psychologists, this book focuses on the diseases and related social issues that cause the greatest harm and pose the greatest threat to African American women today. Its chapters address topics as varied as heart disease, cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, domestic violence, cervical and breast cancers, obesity, depression, mental illness, dementia/Alzheimer's, and incarcerated women's health care. A chapter is dedicated to identifying the social, cultural, and environmental barriers that block African American women from experiencing the best possible lives. Providing comprehensive coverage of the topic from an Afrocentric perspective, this text will be of great interest to medical and psychological health professionals and professors; social workers, counselors, and students in these fields; as well as African American women seeking current and expert information on these health threats.

South East Queensland has been one of the fastest growing regions of Australia, both in terms of its rapidly growing population and an ever-expanding built environment. It is also one of the most vulnerable regions likely to suffer from the adverse impacts of climate change, especially increased flooding, storms, coastal erosion and drought. Responding to Climate Change: Lessons from an Australian Hotspot brings together the results of cutting-edge research from members of the Griffith Climate Change Response Program, showing how best to respond to anticipated changes and how to overcome barriers to adaptation. The authors treat climate change adaptation as a cross-cutting, multi-level governance policy challenge extending across human settlements, infrastructure, ecosystems, water management, primary industries, emergency management and human health. The research focuses on, but is not limited to, the experience of climate change adaptation in the recognised climate hotspot of South East Queensland. The results of this research will be of interest to planners, policy makers and other practitioners engaged in urban and environmental planning, coastal management, public health, emergency management, and physical infrastructure at the local, regional and metropolitan government scales.

This comprehensive work examines the fundamentals required for reclaimed water schemes to deliver sustainable farming operations that achieve the yield and quality of produce necessary for acceptance in the market. Growing Crops with Reclaimed Wastewater reviews the historical background of water treatment, its use and disposal from Australian wastewater treatment facilities and the technologies now utilised to treat our wastewater for reuse. The major concerns of chemical, physical and pathological qualities of reclaimed water are addressed, ensuring that the environmental, economic and social requirements of today’s society are met. It reviews the state and national regulatory requirements and guidelines that have made Australia a world leader in the management of reclaimed water and also examines the guidance in the United States of America (Federal) and in California, the World Health Organization guidance and the situation in Israel. This is the first time such a definitive review has been produced on the use of wastewater for horticulture and it will be a key tool for decision makers, researchers and practitioners to understand the main issues and constraints. It will be of particular interest to agricultural scientists, waste and horticulture consultants, engineers, planners, state agencies, environmental officers and students.

With the growth of polypharmacy across medicine, the concept of deprescribing—reducing or eliminating the use of medication—is gaining traction among prescribers in a range of specialties. Applying this concept to psychiatry is more complex than in other fields of medicine and requires expanding the intervention to include consideration of psychological, social, environmental, and cultural factors. Taking a recovery-oriented and strengths-based approach, this book outlines the need for deprescribing in psychiatry and expands on the intervention to look at barriers and strategies for addressing them, as well as specific considerations for classes of psychotropic medications. The book is explicitly not against the use of medications but instead promotes a rational approach to considering the reduction of medications when indicated and when agreed upon by both prescriber and patient by promoting the use of shared decision-making and working to minimize risk while maximizing quality of life. The book includes learning objectives, self-assessment quizzes, and case examples to support the reader and provide concrete illustrations of implementation. It is geared toward all prescribers of psychiatric medications and is useful as well for patients, family members, and other mental health practitioners interested in learning more about approaches to making the best, most judicious use of psychiatric medications in mental health.

Sport as a tool for social impact has gained recognition from international bodies and initiatives such as the SDGs and UNESCO’s flagship, Fit for Life. At UNESCO’s 7th International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport (MINEPS VII), practitioners, experts and representatives of 110 countries in attendance reaffirmed UNESCO’s leading role in building knowledge, developing Member States’ capacities and implementing programmes in the field of impact investment in sport, as critical means to increase public and private investments in Sport for Development. The Social Impact of Sport report aims to contribute to global knowledge and strengthen the case for sport’s potential as a low-cost, high-impact solution for delivering social impact. This report delves into sport’s substantial returns on investment and impact on individuals, communities and societies worldwide and encourages the scaling of investments. Drawing on insights from a wide range of academic and policy documents, this report presents a comprehensive analysis of the social value of sport across eight dimensions: health and well-being, equality and social inclusion, education and labour outcomes, youth empowerment and civic engagement, economic development, security and violence prevention, peacebuilding, and environmental sustainability. It provides compelling evidence of sport’s cost-effectiveness and its profound benefits on individuals and society. The report highlights key challenges such as gaps in research and evidence, geographical imbalance in global evidence and knowledge, insufficient funding, the need for coordinated action and inadequate programme design along with opportunities to enhance sport in achieving social impact. Actionable recommendations are provided to advance the role of sport, including enhanced research, increasing investments in sport, fostering collective action among stakeholders, integrating sport into various policy sectors and designing intentional, context-specific sport-based interventions. The report is a vital resource for policy-makers, academic and investors. It underscores the pivotal role of sport as a driver of positive social development and offers directions to maximise its potential.
