The paper examines the issue of political correct (PC) language as deeply rooted in a set of values and beliefs of the Anglo-American democratic ideology. The review of foreign and Russian-language literature enables to specify key cultural prerequisites of the PC phenomenon and shed light on the current state of the problem. We aimed to use a number of examples from academic literature to describe the factors contributing to the popularity of politically correct vocabulary in all spheres of public communication with the focus on different approaches to the euphemistic nature of PC expressions. Empirical research methods were used including targeted selection of theoretical information on the studied issue and practical language material to study the controversial issue of interpretation and rereading of canonical texts through the lens of political correctness. The conclusion was made that classical and academic literature should not be subjected to the current PC rhetoric and ideology.

The purpose of this paper is to understand the great transition in India by studying the social structural hierarchical relationship between English and Indian languages in India, a multilingual country. For this, the power relationship between English and Indian languages was analyzed on linguistic imperialism. First, it was explained that English, a remnant of imperialism, came to coexist as a dominant language, and analyzed the position of English, which has recently expanded its influence for socioeconomic, from the perspective of Neo linguistic imperialism in India. By linguistic capital, the dominance of English was solidified in India, and due to political and ethnic conflicts, English was used as a resistance against Hindi. Therefore, it is revealed that socioeconomically marginalized regional languages have been marginalized by voluntarily assimilating into English, and that English is consolidating its position as the dominant language.

The actuality of the article is based upon the excessive number of alterations that occur in English due to the social intervention. Let us start by acknowledging the fact that language and society have been dependent on each other for centuries. Critics would agree that there is no doubt about the fact that most of the changes brought upon language have been the result of human will. Obviously people do not transform language on purpose. However, there has been an increase in the number of social communities that feel strongly about changing some of the aspects of language. Especially the lexical one. The article is concerned with the degree to which such a sociolinguistic phenomenon as political correctness influences and changes the English language. It demonstrates the modifications brought upon English as a result of the modern society becoming more and more tolerant towards certain social communities. The issue in question is that said communities in most cases alter the language arbitrarily. Moreover, some of the arguments for the changes are fairly groundless. The authors come to the conclusion that some of the lexical changes in the English language that are deemed necessary are fairly unjustified and are subject to be revised.

Abstract Socially constructed and globally propagated East-West binaries have influenced language ideologies about English in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), but they are not hegemonic. This essay explores how East-West language ideologies are reformed in mergers with Mandarin-minority language ideologies. It discusses two separate but similar recent studies of minority language speakers and language ideologies in the PRC, respectively by Grey and Baioud. Each study reveals aspects of how Mandarin and English are being socially constructed as on the same side of a dichotomous and hierarchic linguistic and social order, in contradistinction to minority languages. The essay thus problematizes the construction of English as a Western language and Mandarin as an Eastern language; both in academic discourses and in wider social and political discourses. The essay uses Asif Agha’s theory of “enregisterment” to unify the points drawn from each study. It concludes that the language ideologies and practices/discourses under examination reproduce the displacement of a subaltern status; we describe this process as dynamic, internal Orientalism and “recursive” Orientalism, drawing on foundational theory of language ideologies. This essay paves the way for further studies of recursive Orientalism.

The English language has shown the same history and development as Anglo-Saxon and British peoples. English ancestors were great warriors and business people. They showed great achievements in Germanic, Scandinavian, Greek, Roman ,French ,English and American wars ,and other activities. This makes English a relevant and suitable language for Wars, social and economic activities; hence the sociolinguistic origins and dimensions of English and business. Nevertheless, this well-known and important language is challenged by business demands that shape and reshape English for communication in the direction of modernity and globalization. The purpose of this analysis is to use structuralism criticism to revisit the diachronic and synchronic aspects of the language to demonstrate connections and interconnections between the origins of the language ,its development and the use of business communication for the promotion of social, political and economic activities. Languages promotion and business development or success are then interdependent for sustainable development

Teaching modern languages for specific purposes requires the investigation of the interaction of language and socio-cultural aspects, the knowledge of which predetermines successful acquisition of intercultural competence by the students. Students studying business language should be recommended to do the research in the theory of language planning namely Political Correctness (PC). Observing politeness strategy, i.e. avoiding direct imposition either in conditional requests or imperatives might be useful for students studying English to be learned as value one. To reduce the level of imposition most English officials prefer to stick to the strategy of disguised imperatives, i.e. rephrase their public messages by employing specific periphrastic expressions in a statement/request/notice/announcement. In the teaching process priorities should be given to introducing the situational language, the speech etiquette in the English and Russian communities; teaching students to assess social responses.

In Japan, one of the strongest economies in the world and home to 125 million people, proficiency in English language is associated with the huge advantages and signifies privilege since the Meiji era when English was used as a tool by Japanese elite in a technological catch-up with the West. The seven years of U.S. occupation of the country after the Second World War have also left a big impact on the Japan’s economic, political and social development. The reconstruction of Japan aided by Americans altered the perception of Japanese people, associating English language with such ideas like freedom and democracy. During the seven years of occupation the country faced a lot of political and economic changes, including liberalization, and was slowly transitioning its central industries from agriculture to light manufacturing and later to heavy manufacturing. The economy of Japan has been slowly recovering from an era of economic stagnation, it is on the path of the moderate growth. Today, it is the third strongest economy with the nominal GDP of about $5.06 trillion that is focused on advanced manufacturing and export, agriculture, fishing and tourism. Japan is very special and different from other countries; a lot of great companies and unique business practices were born there. It is also leading in high-tech innovations and manufacturing. While having a lot of opportunities for various businesses, being politically stable and safe country, its bureaucracy and the comparative difficulty of doing business for foreigners makes it a controversial but potentially rewarding choose for an investment project. In the recent years, the necessity of knowing how to communicate in English has increased significantly. The school program focuses mainly on such skills as reading and writing, and a lot of attempts to reform the system has failed. That is why parents and students are approaching private language schools to master the abilities of speaking and listening. In addition, English teaching is one of the most popular jobs for foreigners in Japan. The language school market is quite saturated, but at given circumstances it can be very rewarding. The idea of the investment project is to create a private language school that will focus on giving Japanese people the practical English skills. The project involves the creation of Gōdō Kaisha (a Japanese analogue to the LLC). This type of incorporation fits the company best, considering the size and scale of the activities. As the company is not planning to issue certificates, the need for special licensing from the state is absent. Appointing a representative director is obligatory in Japan, but GK, allows to appoint a representative director who is not a resident in Japan. The company plans to hire the foreigners already living in Japan, that way the company will be

The present paper discusses the cultural and stylistic issues in the translation of a part of the 2004 Republican Party Platform. Political text in American English and Swedish is in focus, and translation examples are accounted for and categorised according to Vinay & Darbelnet’s (1995) system theory of translation procedures. The conclusion is that cultural issues caused fewer problems than stylistic ones when the Republican Party Platform 2004 was translated.

AbstractIn this chapter, we analyze English tests that are part of two computerised assessment systems, the Finnish Matriculation Examination and the Danish National Tests. Language assessment is a fruitful field to explore from the perspective of materiality, to better understand what materialities exist in modern language tests and how students interact with such systems. Within the assessment and test-taking space, material objects exist that are imbued with political values and force test-takers to perform in specific ways. We explore what new materialism has to offer for interpreting current trends in language assessment and to what extent these perspectives allow for new insights to emerge. We describe the changes in language assessment concerning material developments and focus on the aspects of computerization that pertain to formal tests and examinations. Computerization has increased human-computer interaction during the assessment process, as well as automated analysis and scoring of test-takers’ responses. This implies that the computerized system assumes some degree of agency.

The investigation of several definitions of the term "political discourse" and the role of translation of them is the main focus of this article. Different categories of linguists and scientists are examined, and the characteristics of stylistic techniques and lexical units used in the translation of speeches by British politicians are explained. The linguistic awareness and worldview of contemporary society are shaped by political discourse. Political discourse encompasses all the elements that are present in the minds of both the writer and the reader and can impact speech generation and perception, such as previous texts, political beliefs and the political context.

In Sri Lanka, which used to be British Ceylon for nearly 15 decades, BrE used to hold a dominant position in all aspects of life. Under globalisation, a shift is observed taking place towards AmE due to numerous developments in science, technology, industry, commerce, politics, and popular culture. Academics and professionals depend on audiovisual recordings of presentations produced either in Standard British English (BrE) or Standard American English (AmE) and broadcast in public media. Against this background, this paper examines the dynamicity of English pronunciation in Sri Lanka caused by BrE and AmE, to which the ESL learners on the island are daily exposed. It also investigates the extent to which BrE and AmE respectively influence English pronunciation in Sri Lanka, filling a notable gap in the existing literature. The research provides valuable insights into some emerging trends in English pronunciation in Sri Lanka, the conditions that influence the Sri Lankan speakers’ attitudes toward the two varieties of English, and the support the ESL teachers can derive from their awareness of pronunciational swings between BrE and AmE in organising teaching practices and materials. Further, some major pronunciation differences between BrE and AmE are explored, highlighting both disparities and exceptions consistent in certain phonetic features. Finally, it explores the dynamicity of English pronunciation in Sri Lanka, emphasizing the need to consider both local and global factors in ESL teaching, with suggestions for effective language learning and communication in global contexts.

Understanding the importance of embracing digital life, teleworking and online education as commonplace, normal aspects of the 21st century technological society, we emphasize the necessity to develop the engineering students' online professional communication competence in the English language seminars in a technical university with a view to preparing them for successful future jobs which they can do online. This paper argues that for a future career in an international company, whose activities can take place online and whose language of communication is English, the engineering students need professional communication skills in English at an advanced level and an appropriate, respectful, politically correct attitude and behaviour, which are part of what we call the online professional communication competence and which ensure their success in an online job interview, in a company meeting, in a business or technical presentation in a videoconference or in an online international scientific conference, enabling them to act successfully in various job-related contexts. This paper shows that by focusing on the communicative method and the direct method of teaching language in context, using e-learning resources and encouraging the students to take part in various e-learning activities, we can develop the students' knowledge of academic English and their online professional communication competence for successful work purposes. This paper is divided into three parts: 1) the importance of developing the engineering students' online professional communication competence through e-learning resources and activities for specific job-related contexts; 2) e-learning activities and methods for developing the engineering students' online professional communication competence; 3) the students' perspective on the importance of developing their online professional communication competence in English for successful online interaction in specific job-related contexts. Focusing on e-learning resources and online seminar activities in order to teach the engineering students how to professionally interact online in various work-related situations in the English language seminars will help us meet the students' educational needs for a successful career in a company.

Political and social transformations have led to changes in lexical systems of national languages, which respond vividly to the emergent needs of society. The loss by special lexical units (terms) of their terminological exclusiveness, and their transition into the sphere of general use, indicates human involvement in economic, political, social, and other spheres, and the human dependence on current processes. Owing to a constant and continuous exchange between language for general purposes and language for specific purposes, and one which is bidirectional, the transition of word combinations and phraseological units into the sphere of special use has culminated in a process of determinism. Here, terminological units, for instance, LSP units, have begun to become widely used in language for general purposes. The active penetration of phraseology into the professional sphere of communication has encouraged linguists to conduct respective work in this field. One such aspect of phraseological unit study is their functioning in professional spheres, whereby scientists widely consider and discuss the problem of origin and use of term-phraseological units. Considering the complex nature of phraseological phrases and the fact that, initially, these units belong to general literary language, these units have been labelled term-phraseological units, as they are used in a terminological context, and thus form a second, terminological meaning. Such a phenomenon emerges from the generality of laws, and the functioning of terminological and commonly used vocabulary, yet also by the desire to identify word-forming features of terminology. Therefore, we see a need to discuss the theoretical underpinnings of semantic processes that underlie the formation of terminological meaning in phraseological units, the identification of semantic-nominative features of phraseological terms, and their differences to phraseological units of language for general purposes. The paper focuses on the complexity of the mutual penetration and influence of terminological and phraseological systems of the English language. The paper reveals the current patterns in viewing language units across various fields of knowledge, and evidences the fact that insurance terms are gaining higher social significance, more so as a greater number of people are involving themselves in this field of activity.

Understanding monetary policy has always been of paramount economic and political importance. However, it remains a difficult task, despite transparency efforts and the regular flow of information to the public, which becomes even more complex when communication channels are multilingual. This paper examines the policy narratives of the Swiss National Bank (SNB) in terms of language and policy preferences, using the corpus of speeches delivered by its members over the period 1997-2022. Using a dynamic semantic search strategy based on top2vec, the framework analysis was able to identify interlingual similarities and differences with the help of pre-trained multilingual models. The results show that the SNB's communication strategy is strongly oriented towards the objectives assigned to the central bank, with attention being paid to systemic risks, banking regulation and financial markets, which emerge as second but no less important objectives, closely linked to the international environment, in particular the Eurosystem as a strategic aspect of the stability of the Swiss franc. The results suggest that English is used exclusively to address core central banking issues (monetary policy, inflation and interest rates), while uncertainty concerns seem to be reported more in German or French. The resulting dual semantic space, consisting of embedded words and documents, yielded relevant topics with respect to the size and scope of the corpus. Furthermore, informative indices could be constructed for policy measurement, as a crisis index was found to be consistent with the business cycle fluctuations and technical recessions experienced in Switzerland over the last 25 years.

The essence of the evolution of a language is characterized by the creation and permanent improvement of the means of expression. However, changes in the lexicon and, in general, language development are determined by the progress of objective reality. Thus, the language must use new lexical units to constantly enrich itself and to name realities that have recently appeared in various domains of public activity (politics, economy, sports, information technologies, fashion, music, cinematography, gastronomy, cosmetology and others). In the contemporary linguistic context, the innovative changes in the Romanian language occur mainly due to interference with the English language. The influence of English on our language constitutes a topical aspect in the development of the Romanian vocabulary. The new social realities have led to an opening of the domains, this fact favoring terminological migration. In the present study we approach the phenomenon of expanding the meaning of terms of English origin in different spheres of current interest and analyze the polysemy as a result of their circulation in various specialized domains.

German textbooks of English influence their users’ acquisition of agreement patterns with collective nouns in two ways. On the one hand, the use of collective nouns throughout the textbooks serves as a language model for students, and on the other hand, their grammar sections provide explicit rules on agreement patterns with collective nouns. The present study analyzes both these aspects in the LehrplanPLUS versions of the textbook series Green Line and Access for Bavarian secondary schools (Gymnasien) and compares them to native speaker data from Levin (2001). Although this comparison shows that the agreement patterns with collective nouns throughout the textbooks support their nativelike acquisition, the grammar sections show some deficits that might inhibit the nativelike acquisition of agreement patterns with collective nouns.

The article explores the key vocabulary of 2020 in the network space of Ukraine. Texts of journalistic, official-business style, analytical publications of well-known journalists on current topics are analyzed. Extralinguistic factors of new word formation, their adaptation to the sphere of special and socio-political vocabulary of the Ukrainian language are determined. Examples show modern impressions in the media, their stylistic use and impact on public opinion in a pandemic. New meanings of foreign expressions, media terminology, peculiarities of translation of neologisms from English into Ukrainian have been clarified. According to the materials of the online media, a «dictionary of the coronavirus era» is provided. The journalistic text functions in the media on the basis of logical judgments, credible arguments, impressive language. Its purpose is to show the socio-political problem, to sharpen its significance for society and to propose solutions through convincing considerations. Most researchers emphasize the influential role of journalistic style, which through the media shapes public opinion on issues of politics, economics, education, health care, war, the future of the country. To cover such a wide range of topics, socio-political vocabulary is used first of all – neutral and emotionally-evaluative, rhetorical questions and imperatives, special terminology, foreign words. There is an ongoing discussion in online publications about the use of the new foreign token «lockdown» instead of the word «quarantine», which has long been learned in the Ukrainian language. Research on this topic has shown that at the initial stage of the pandemic, the word «lockdown» prevailed in the colloquial language of politicians, media personalities and part of society did not quite understand its meaning. Lockdown, in its current interpretation, is a restrictive measure to protect people from a dangerous virus that has spread to many countries; isolation of the population («stay in place») in case of risk of spreading Covid-19. In English, US citizens are told what a lockdown is: «A lockdown is a restriction policy for people or communities to stay where they are, usually due to specific risks to themselves or to others if they can move and interact freely. The term «stay-at-home» or «shelter-in-place» is often used for lockdowns that affect an area, rather than specific locations». Content analysis of online texts leads to the conclusion that in 2020 a special vocabulary was actively functioning, with the appropriate definitions, which the media described as a «dictionary of coronavirus vocabulary». Media broadcasting is the deepest and pulsating source of creative texts with new meanings, phrases, expressiveness. The influential power of the word finds its unconditional embodiment in the media. Journalists, bloggers, experts, politicians, analyzing current events, produce concepts of a new reality. The world is changing and the language of the media is responding to these changes. It manifests itself most vividly and emotionally in the network sphere, in various genres and styles.

Preparing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) preservice teachers for lesson planning has a been a concern among teacher educators globally. Research has shown that preservice teachers encounter difficulties in aspects such as objective setting, considering their learners’ needs, and matching assessment and objectives, among others. Similarly, preservice teachers still need to be presented with ample opportunities for reflective teaching. These concerns have been addressed by teacher educators in systematic ways. Hence, guided by two sets of research questions, this literature review aims at exploring the procedures that educators in diverse contexts have used to aid their student teachers in preparing for lesson planning. The first set seeks to identify the procedures used as well as their outcomes. The second set of questions aims to inquire on the methodologies adopted. Twelve studies were selected for the final review, which were found using the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) and Google scholar databases as well as the academia.edu platform. A matrix was created to analyze the papers selected together with a coding process. The analysis revealed that collaborative procedures such as mentoring and lesson study combined with reflective teaching seem to render optimal learning experiences for preservice teachers. A special mention is given to plan lessons using authentic materials. Furthermore, types of methodologies that promote rich description such as case studies appear to be appropriate to frame these studies.

The Canada Geological Map Compilation (CGMC) is a database of previously published bedrock geological maps sourced from provincial, territorial, and other geological survey organizations. The geoscientific information included within these source geological maps was standardized, translated to English, and combined to provide complete coverage of Canada and support a range of down-stream machine learning applications. Detailed lithological, mineralogical, metamorphic, lithostratigraphic, and lithodemic information was not previously available as one national-scale product. The source map data was also enhanced by correcting geometry errors and through the application of a new hierarchical generalized lithology classification scheme to subdivide the original rocks types into 35 classes. Each generalized lithology is associated with a semi-quantitative measure of classification uncertainty. Lithostratigraphic and lithodemic names included within the source maps were matched with the Lexicon of Canadian Geological Names (Weblex) wherever possible and natural language processing was used to transform all of the available text-based information into word tokens. Overlapping map polygons and boundary artifacts across political boundaries were not addressed as part of this study. As a result, the CGMC is a patchwork of overlapping bedrock geological maps with varying scale (1:30,000-1:5,000,000), publication year (1996-2023), and reliability. Preferred geological and geochronological maps of Canada are presented as geospatial rasters based on the best available geoscientific information extracted from these overlapping polygons for each map pixel. New higher resolution geological maps will be added over time to fill data gaps and to update geoscientific information for future applications of the CGMC.
