Air purification devices, such as air purifiers, provide fresh air by filtering out airborne pollutants, dust, and other harmful substances using various filter systems. While air filters are generally effective in filtering pollutants such as dust, they encounter a challenge when filtering harmful microorganisms such as mites, bacteria, mold, and viruses. These microorganisms, which are present in public transport and public indoor spaces, tend to proliferate on the surface of the filter media, eventually reintroducing themselves into the air or causing unpleasant odors. To address this issue, herein, copper particles were prepared as one masterbatch and deposited on polypropylene (PP) pellets through plasma vacuum deposition to effectively filter dust and microorganisms and prevent their growth on the surface of the filter media. After adding 3–10 wt.% of the masterbatch to conventional PP pellets to fabricate a filter media, the distribution of copper on the surface of the filter media was observed through a scanning electron microscope. To verify the safety and effectiveness of the antimicrobial material, the filter media containing antimicrobial particles was tested using Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus through a filter emission test.

At the present time, the need to evacuate organic and green growth of algae contaminants in micro irrigation system is expanding increasingly. The worldwide populace is expanding and as a result of this, the world may encounter extraordinary fresh water shortage. Our water assets are constrained and, subsequently, water treatment and reusing strategies are the main choices for getting crisp and fresh water in the coming decades. This study examines the rate of the impact of green growth of algae existing in micro irrigation system performance on the disc filters and sand tanks in the examination field of water, soil and horticultural and agricultural commercial enterprises Vice-Presidency of Karaj. The analyses were performed in four scenarios comprising of ordinary disc filter together with sand tank, automated disc filter together with sand tank, automated disc filter without sand tank lastly common ordinary disc filter without sand tank. These scenarios were assessed and looked at in three classifications of physical quality of irrigation system water. Data collection and experiments was run up to three months. The results of the experiments demonstrated that concentration of organic and suspended materials is viewed as safe for low flow emitters. In the range of 50 through 100 mg per liter, automated disc filters represented a good performance. In the concentration of 100 mg/l or higher, the performance of disc filters significantly decreased; subsequently it is important to put the sand tank before disc filters.

Computer vision is a very important research direction in the cognitive computing field. Robots encounter various target-tracking problems with computer vision systems. Robust scale estimation is an important issue in tracking algorithms. Most of the available methods have difficulty addressing even reasonable changes of scale in complex videos. In this paper, we propose a visual tracking method based on robust scale estimation, which uses a discriminant correlation filter based on a time-dependent scale-space filter and an adaptive cross-correlation filter. The tracker uses separate essential filters for sample migration and scale estimation. Furthermore, the built-in scale estimation method can be introduced into other tracking algorithms. We validate the proposed method on the UAV123 dataset. The results of comparison experiments with the traditional correlation filter tracking method demonstrate that the proposed method improves the success rate and tracking accuracy while controlling the computational complexity; its success rate measured by the area under the curve is 0.638, while at a location error precision of 20%, it is 0.649.

Filter media may encounter aerosols mixed with solid and oil ingredients from various sources, such as industries, transportation, and households, in the air purification process, while the influence such oil content has on the loading performance of single-stage and two-stage filtration systems is under-reported. Thus, this study aims to evaluate oil fraction effects on the loading performance of single-stage and two-stage filtration systems. First, to reveal the oil–solid mixed particle deposition mechanisms, the filter media parameters, i.e., specific cake resistance ε and cake porosity K2, were tested, indicating that a slight amount of oil can increase the dust holding capacity (DHC) of filters by forming a more porous cake, while an excess of oil results in reduced DHC by forming impermeable liquid films on the solid skeleton. Further two-stage experimental results indicate that the effectiveness of a pre-stage filter can be significantly affected by the properties of incoming aerosol and main-stage filters. The utilization of a pre-stage filter unintentionally deteriorated the service lifetime of the main-stage filter when challenged with contaminants with certain oil particles. This counter-intuitive negative phenomenon is due to the special loading behaviors of oil–solid mixed particles. The existing pre-stage filters allow a higher fine oil particle fraction to reach the main-stage downstream, while the induced cake filtration scenario leading to a film clogging scenario adversely reduced the lifetime of the main-stage filter. The findings suggest that the feasibility of a pre-stage in the filtration system requires compressive evaluations according to the specific oil-coated contaminants.

A lowpass filter inserted into the logistic map stabilizes fixed points of the system for large parameter ranges and increases the range of global stability. With a first order filter we encounter a special case of the general 2-D quadratic map with hyperchaos in parts of its parameter ranges. Filtered maps include some maps with delayed variables, and here we present one of the simplest examples of such a system.

Television news has been studied from a number of perspectives. Few studies have focused on the moment of the encounter between the television viewer and the news. This research focused on what takes place at the encounter as described by the viewer. Its specific research questions were: what viewer typology constructs? What key news aesthetic emerges? And what is the nature of the encounter process? These were examined in a qualitative study mainly using a phenomenological approach involving 58 participants. The study had three key findings: that the television viewer is a disturbed, reflective, and dominating person at the encounter; that an epic news genre dominates the site and process; and lastly, that the key process at the encounter is one of intertextuality through a combative, combustive fusion and filter procedure. The research argues for a new area of encounter studies.

The automatic identification of multiship encounter is a vital criterion for ship collision avoidance and intelligent maritime safety surveillance. However, the parameters of ship encounter identification in the existing studies are fixed, and the methods are weak to give an automatic and visual performance in the multiship encounter identification. In order to fix the existed gap, this paper proposed a novel adaptive visual analytics framework for automatic multiship encounter identification based on density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) and visual analytics by adjusting the parameters of ship encounter adaptively. The DBSCAN clustering method was applied to detect the clusters of encounter ships and filter out the nonencounter ship, and the distribution and density of the encounter ship had been visualized on the nautical chart to give a better perception of ships’ behavior with a potentially high navigational risk. The framework had been designed and developed using DBSCAN and visual analytics, and the effectiveness was evaluated and validated by adjusting different parameters of multiship encounter within the Southwest waters of Zhoushan Island, China. The results showed that the proposed framework had a good performance in the visual identification of multiship encounter within confined waters, which could assist the ship collision avoidance and intelligent maritime surveillance system.

Fedna, Jimmy. "Prévalence du parasite Angiostrongylus cantonensis en Haïti chez les rats et gastéropodes". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Bourgogne Franche-Comté, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024UBFCD017.

My research examines the prevalence and distribution of the parasite Angiostrongylus cantonensis, also known as the rat lungworm, in Haiti. It is the leading cause of eosinophilic meningitis in humans worldwide. This parasite has a complex life cycle involving definitive hosts (rats) and intermediate hosts (snails and slugs). I documented the parasite's ecology and persistence two decades after its initial discovery in the country. Three objectives were set: synthesizing knowledge on the spatial and ecological dimensions of A. cantonensis’ niche, determining its presence and distribution in Haiti among rat and gastropod populations using molecular and morphological analyses, and identifying genetic similarities between Haitian strains and those from other regions of the world. We targeted two contrasting ecological contexts: the Artibonite Valley (rural environment) and the urban area of Port-au-Prince. Sampling occurred during and at the end of the rainy season due to the potential influence of hydrological seasonality on parasite prevalence. A systematic review using the PRISMA method synthesized existing knowledge on the parasite's ecological niche, focusing on abiotic and biotic factors affecting its dynamics. Seventy rats were captured:23 Rattus norvegicus and 47 Rattus rattus. Under a binocular loupe, we recovered adult worms from only five rats (7%, 5/70), but molecular detection revealed a prevalence of A. cantonensis in rat lungs of 31.4% (22/70), with the parasite detected in four of the eight sites, including Port-au-Prince. Parasite prevalence was not significantly related to predictive variables such as age, season, sex, and rat species. Only one COX1 haplotype, genotype II-G, was identified in Haiti, suggesting a widespread distribution similar to other regions. The qPCR technique AcanR3990 identified two positive samples of gastropod species: Subulina octona in Port-au-Prince and a Veronicellidae slug in the Artibonite, indicating the presence of the parasite found in rats at these locations. This is the first study on A. cantonensis in Haiti addressing both definitive and intermediate hosts. Molecular diagnostics by PCR reveal a higher prevalence than morphological identification, promising for the systematic study of potential host species contamination. Results indicate that endemicity of the parasite may primarily be linked to two gastropod species: the land snail S. octona and Veronicellidae slugs, as well as R. rattus and R. norvegicus rats, highlighting significant health risks for local populations

The job interview is a gatekeeping encounter and it is crucial that the recruitment process is conducted in a fair and just way. Potential gendered verbal behaviour might affect an interviewer's impression and judgement of the interviewee. Previous research has shown that men and women differ in several ways in verbal communication, both as regards formal and informal encounters. In the present paper, a corpus study on forty job interviews is conducted with the aim to find out whether there are any differences between men and women when it comes to turn-length and the use of boosters, hedges, fillers and pauses. The results show that in the majority of the features under scrutiny, there is no statistically significant difference. These results do not go in line with earlier research on gendered verbal behaviour. Proposed explanations for these results are that the female interviewer might have encouraged a less typically gendered verbal behaviour and that younger generations have developed a less gendered conversational style compared to older generations. However, due to the limitations of the present study, no empirical conclusion can be drawn regarding this and further research needs to be conducted in order to fully explain these research findings.

In December 1945 the "L'Approdo" transmissions were launched at the RAI headquarters in Florence. The radio programme, one of the most important in Italy at the time, went on the air up to 1977, being accompanied from 1952 by a magazine and from 1963 to 1972 by a television programme. The three parallel cultural "enterprises" boasted an impressive number of important collaborators, gravitating around the decisive figure of Carlo Betocchi as leader and organiser. Nevertheless, despite its significance, even the adventure of "L'Approdo" was destined to die. When the transmissions and the publication of the magazine ceased, an entire cultural élite had to come to terms not only with the objective difficulties, but with a crisis of trust and of commitment in the face of what were now irreversible changes in the country. Yet – precisely because "L'Approdo" had battled for an approach that was destined to become minority with the triumph of the new media society – the retrieval of its history and the reconstruction through voices, pages and images of one of the first examples of encounter and mediation between culture and communication appears particularly significant. The methods and the emphatic planning of the entire experience emerge clearly from the first issue of the magazine, produced here in anastatic reprint, and above all from the enclosed CD-Rom which proposes, along with the tables of contents of "L'Approdo", the files and records of the entire correspondence (over 20,000 unpublished pieces) and details of the surviving scripts of the transmissions… In short, we finally have at our disposal material that enables us to reconstruct – through the traces of a programme and a magazine and of the intellectuals who collaborated on them – thirty years of culture and utopia, of compromise and enthusiasm, clustered around the birth, growth and death of an articulated project of "cultural policy".

While the effectiveness of direct social work practice always requires one’s competence in providing a variety of intervention modalities, outcomes are also dependent on the social worker’s ability to develop and maintain constructive relationships with clients. This book describes in depth the many ways that such relationships can be developed with clients who display a wide range of presenting problems in many types of social service agencies. Each chapter focuses on a particular challenge that social workers may encounter in that process, including the benefits and limitations of theory selection, boundaries, the use of self, the working alliance, relationship ruptures, special issues presented by children and adolescents, terminations and transfers, clients about whom a social worker experiences highly positive or negative feelings, the uses of touch and humor, working with psychotic clients, and the uses of technology. The book is filled with case studies written by students to illustrate how relationships can be formed and challenges can be resolved. The book is targeted to social work students in their field placements, although it can also be useful for practicing professionals.

The year 922 saw a series of remarkable face-to-face encounters in the steppes between Bukhara and the Middle Volga. Ibn Fadlan was an intrepid member of a diplomatic and religious mission from the distant caliphate in Baghdad to the ruler of the Volga Bulgars. His account gives a vivid eyewitness description of the peoples he came upon (whose appearance, rituals and filthy habits both fascinate and appal) and a famous depiction of a Viking Rus ship burial. It is unique testimony to burgeoning exchanges between several different cultures, and to the emergence of new political structures on the steppes. Yet the account survives only as part of a later composite work, raising questions of meaning and historical interpretation. This pioneering interdisciplinary study of Ibn Fadlan’s text and the world he surveyed draws on a variety of specialists to give readers both ‘the bigger picture’ of cultural and economic change in Eurasia, Byzantium and the Muslim world, and hard facts, in the form of archaeological and numismatic data.

During the nineteenth century, Americans encountered Asia through a number of exchanges. Drawing on the work of Edward Said, this chapter surveys the development of American Orientalism across three areas: academic Orientalism, representative Orientalism, and Orientalist discourses of power. Academic Orientalism first developed in the United States as the work of British Orientalists in India filtered into the country. Later, Americans such as William D. Whitney placed American Orientalism on par with its European competitors. Meanwhile, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, imagined Asia as a land of Oriental mysticism and contemplation in contrast to American materialism and reason. Finally, the World’s Parliament of Religion in 1893 used representations of the Orient to bolster claims of American cultural supremacy. Through all of these examples, Orientalism collapsed the line between religion and race such that the Orient always represented racial and religious inferiority to white Christian America.

AbstractThe human body is an intricate network of multiple functioning sub-systems. Many unobserved processes quietly keep running within the body even while we remain largely unconscious of them. For decades, scientists have sought to understand how different physiological systems work and how they can be mathematically modeled. Mathematical models of biological systems provide key scientific insights and also help guide the development of technologies for treating disorders when proper functioning no longer occurs. One of the challenges encountered with physiological systems is that, in a number of instances, the quantities we are interested in are difficult to observe directly or remain completely inaccessible. This could be either because they are located deep within the body or simply because they are more abstract (e.g., emotion). Consider the heart, for instance. The left ventricle pumps out blood through the aorta to the rest of the body. Blood pressure inside the aorta (known as central aortic pressure) has been considered a useful predictor of the future risk of developing cardiovascular disease, perhaps even more useful than the conventional blood pressure measurements taken from the upper arm (McEniery et al. (Eur Heart J 35(26):1719–1725, 2014)). However, measuring blood pressure inside the aorta is difficult. Consequently, researchers have had to rely on developing mathematical models with which to estimate central aortic pressure using other peripheral measurements (e.g., Ghasemi et al. (J Dyn Syst Measur Control 139(6):061003, 2017)). The same could be said regarding the recovery of CRH (corticotropin-releasing hormone) secretion timings within the hypothalamus—a largely inaccessible structure deep within the brain—using cortisol measurements in the blood based on mathematical relationships (Faghih (System identification of cortisol secretion: Characterizing pulsatile dynamics, Ph.D. dissertation, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2014)). Emotions could also be placed in this same category. They are difficult to measure because of their inherently abstract nature. Emotions, however, do cause changes in heart rate, sweating, and blood pressure that can be measured and with which someone’s feelings can be estimated. What we have described so far, in a sense, captures the big picture underlying this book. We have physiological quantities that are difficult to observe directly, we have measurements that are easier to acquire, and we have the ability to build mathematical models to estimate those inaccessible quantities.

AbstractIn this chapter Taylor-Pirie examines how one particular tropical disease—sleeping sickness—was conceptualised as a form of tropical violence across a range of medical and nonmedical genres. Using the repetition of an African curse ‘owa na ntolo’ as an access point, she reveals how sensational literary depictions of sleeping sickness circulated between newspaper reports and clinical case studies, augmenting debates about racial susceptibility. Depictions of African sleeping sickness, she argues, were filtered through an emotional register that produced new aetiologies of race and illness visible in Henry Seton Merriman’s hugely popular imperial romance novel With Edged Tools (1894), as well as in medical essays and tropical travel guides. The melodramatic mode and a flexible approach to representations of disease transmission produced Africa as a place productive of illness and immorality in equal measure. Ultimately, she demonstrates how Britain’s encounters with tropical disease—fictional and nonfictional—were used to map not only the epidemiological but also the sociocultural topographies of empire.

AbstractData assimilation techniques are the state-of-the-art approaches in the reconstruction of a spatio-temporal geophysical state such as the atmosphere or the ocean. These methods rely on a numerical model that fills the spatial and temporal gaps in the observational network. Unfortunately, limitations regarding the uncertainty of the state estimate may arise when considering the restriction of the data assimilation problems to a small subset of observations, as encountered for instance in ocean surface reconstruction. These limitations motivated the exploration of reconstruction techniques that do not rely on numerical models. In this context, the increasing availability of geophysical observations and model simulations motivates the exploitation of machine learning tools to tackle the reconstruction of ocean surface variables. In this work, we formulate sea surface spatio-temporal reconstruction problems as state space Bayesian smoothing problems with unknown augmented linear dynamics. The solution of the smoothing problem, given by the Kalman smoother, is written in a differentiable framework which allows, given some training data, to optimize the parameters of the state space model.

Abstract This chapter details the various ways disease can be transmitted between organisms. Respiratory viruses such as influenza are airborne; some pathogens such as HIV and hepatitis can be transmitted through bodily fluids; some infectious diseases, such as cholera, can survive in water; and still other pathogens have evolved to use other organisms, especially blood-sucking insects and mites, as vectors to travel from one host to another. The concepts of the encounter and compatibility filters describe the competition between hosts and pathogens to enhance or reduce the pathogen’s ability to move into new hosts (the encounter filter) and replicate within them (the compatibility filter). Mathematical models help understand how pathogens spread both among hosts and within individual hosts’ bodies. Virulence, resistance, and tolerance describe the pathogen and host factors that determine how badly pathogens will compromise an infected host’s health.

‘Looking ahead’ shows how our understanding of disease ecology and evolution has revolutionized disease management. By developing transmission control strategies to close the encounter filter and vaccines and treatments to close the compatibility filter, we have reduced the misery caused by infectious disease. But what is the outlook for the future control of infectious diseases? We cannot eradicate infectious disease. Living things have parasitized one another since the beginning of life itself. New zoonotic diseases will continue to emerge, and existing diseases will continually evolve to escape our methods of control. Despite this stark reality, we can minimize the impact of disease even if we can never fully conquer it.

The integration of AI into various aspects of our lives has significantly reshaped how we access information, products, and services. AI-driven personalization, a key feature of many platforms, aims to enhance user experiences by tailoring content to individual preferences. Advancement of AI personalization has given rise to the filter bubble and echo-chamber phenomena. Filter bubbles expose consumers to content that reinforces their existing beliefs and preferences, creating a paradox. This chapter explores the multifaceted implications of AI-personalization paradox on digital consumer behavior in the context of the filter bubble era investigating how AI algorithms shape the content users encounter, impact of algorithms on information diversity, and consequences for consumer decision-making. The chapter concludes speculating on future of personalization, emphasizing the need to balance customization with information diversity, encouraging critical thinking about AI ethics among consumers.

infect a number of host species. This host range is given by an ecological filter (the possibility of encounter) and a physiological one (the capacity of establishing an infection). Host ranges typically are right-skewed, with most parasites infecting only a few, but few infecting very many hosts. There is no universally valid hypothesis that explains host range. However, a number of factors contribute to host range, such as geographical range, phylogenetic distance, host predictability, and parasite virulence. Specificity and cross-reactivity of immune defences are important mechanisms. Moreover, immune memory is based on specificity; transgenerational immune priming protects offspring when parents have already been exposed to the same or similar parasites.

Early modern readers of Herodotus, especially those in the Italian peninsula, on occasion established an analogy between their situation in relation to the expanding Turkish empire in the sixteenth century and that of the eastern Mediterranean world, especially the Greek world, in relation to the Persian empire as outlined in Herodotus’ Histories. Readers used their encounter with the Herodotean text as a filter through which to comment on and make sense of what at times must have appeared to them to be the beginning of the end of western culture as they knew it. In 1491, not long after the Este court in Ferrara sponsored Matteo Maria Boiardo’s translation of Herodotus into Italian, Zoanne Pencaro, a minor figure in the court, commissioned the production of a manuscript copy in which he made a remarkable set of annotations in the vernacular (nearly 2500 words) that show a growing awareness of the ancient near east.

To boost the sale is the prime objective for promoters. For this purpose, they generally allow credit period. In this article, we have considered an inventory model in which supplier gives credit period to retailer and to increase the sale, retailer passes it to end customers. This phenomenon is known as two level trade credits. By allowing credit period we may encounter with the issue of default risk which has been taken care of while calculating profit function for the system. Also, each and every inventory product gets deteriorated over the time as per its nature and such deteriorating products have its maximum life time as well. The present inventory model deals with such products. Quadratic demand is discussed here which is suitable for the products for which demand increases initially and after sometimes it shows decreasing pattern. Finally, retailer's total profit is maximized with respect to credit period and cycle time. Numerical examples are given to validate the model. Sensitivity analyses are done to filter significant inventory parameters.

Extensive development in ship motion control strategies and systems in recent decades has called for higher requirements in control system accuracy and reliability. In this paper, a ship flotation control system based on pump-driven active tank is established. A special case is discussed, where the ship is heeling under an asymmetric loading either by structural damage or asymmetric consumption of ammunition. The purpose of the control system is to keep the ship in upright floating position in waves by transferring liquid between the tanks. Kalman filter is designed to eliminate the wave disturbance, in order to identify the heeling angle caused by asymmetric loading change. The effect of wave disturbance at different wave encounter angles, wave heights, as well as ship speeds is analyzed. Tuning of filter parameters such as initial state variables, initial error covariance and noise covariance is performed to achieve better filtering performance for different parameters of waves and ship motion. To verify the control model, simulation is conducted for a 3340t ship and the simulation results are compared with the theoretical calculations. The research results show the applicability and efficiency of Kalman filter. The concept of the control system presented in the paper is helpful to improve ship stability and safety when ship upright floating condition is disturbed.

This paper presents a novel hardware-in-the loop (HIL) simulation tool with the capability to accurately and realistically test the response of optical systems during a fly-by of a comet through the central coma region i.e. in a heavy dust environment. The HIL simulations are performed using the Dynamic Optical Ground Support Equipment (DOGSE) developed at DTU Space which can expose representative optical sensors to high fidelity, dynamic, optical stimulations on a small, high-resolution screen, thus enabling flexible, yet complex HIL simulation tests. The simulations are part of a predevelopment activity within the Comet Interceptor AOCS/GNC preliminary design with OHB Sweden leading the effort. The Comet Interceptor mission aims to intercept a Dynamically New Comet or an interstellar body with the closest encounter at a distance of less than 1000 km from the comet nucleus and a relative velocity between 10 and 70 km/s. The spacecraft will be launched towards the Sun-Earth L2 (SEL2) Lagrange point where it will wait up to three years until an interesting target object is identified. The spacecraft will then initiate a transfer phase which will last between 0.5 and 4 years. The final approach starts approximately 60 days before the encounter and mission success depend on the navigation system ensuring that the spacecraft can track the comet nucleus throughout the encounter. The navigation solution is realized with navigation cameras in combination with star trackers, and with an on-board navigation filter which processes and fuses the measurement data. Due to the inherent uncertainties associated with intercepting an a priori unknown, fast-moving comet with an unknown and likely dynamic dust environment it is essential that new, effective, and flexible methods for testing fly-by scenarios are developed and refined. The DOGSE tool is partially automated to test mission scenarios with a fast turn-around and it can realistically display the translucent coma against an accurate projection of the starry sky (i.e. stars can be observed through the dust). The tool takes as its input a trajectory file and generate synthetic images of the comet based on a detailed cometary dust distribution model in the vicinity of the comet nucleus, including distributions of different particle sizes, their phase angle dependent albedo and Sun-distance dependence. This paper presents current results from the HIL simulations based on the navigation architecture of the Comet-I mission and describes how the dynamic optical stimulator is calibrated and handled. Results include the operation of the navigation camera and the performance of star tracker functionality from afar to the closets encounter in the coma dust environment.

Ultrasound waves, transmitted by a transducer into a body, are reflected and scattered by the materials they encounter in the body. In case of blood flow measurements in an artery, the received signal will contain the information not only from the moving red blood cells, but the reflections from the vessel wall of other soft tissue structures as well. The discrimination between ultrasound signals originating from scattering of red blood cells and reflection of tissue is one of the major problems for blood velocity assessment. Traditionally, in Doppler processing, where the highest blood velocities in the middle of the vessel are estimated, this discrimination is obtained via a high pass filter with a static cut-off frequency related to the maximum frequency content of the reflections. This is illustrated in Fig.1 (top). As illustrated in Fig. 1 (bottom), problems occur for velocity estimation of slowly moving blood cells close to the vessel wall and in case of perpendicular insonification [1]. In these cases, there is no frequency shift in the signal received from scattering on blood cells. Furthermore, the intensity of the reflections from the vessel wall is highest in case of perpendicular insonification. Filtering in these cases is very challenging since it allows the assessment of blood velocity profiles without contrast agents.

Kalman filters are widely used in the turbine engine community for health monitoring purpose. This algorithm has proven its capability to track gradual deterioration with a good accuracy. On the other hand, its response to rapid deterioration is either a long delay in recognising the fault, and/or a spread of the estimated fault on several components. The main reason of this deficiency lies in the transition model of the parameters that is blended in the Kalman filter and assumes a smooth evolution of the engine condition. This contribution reports the development of an adaptive diagnosis tool that combines a Kalman filter and a secondary system that monitors the residuals. This auxiliary component implements a Generalised Likelihood Ratio Test in order to detect and estimate an abrupt fault. The enhancement in terms of accuracy and reactivity brought by this adaptive Kalman filter is highlighted for a variety of simulated fault cases that may be encountered on a commercial aircraft engine.

From the results of model studies on well-characterized systems, valuable conclusions can be drawn regarding several phenomena occurring in papermaking suspensions relevant to fines and fillers retention. We have shown that long range hydrodynamic interactions are operating between small particles (such as fillers) and spheroids (such as fibers) subjected to simple shear, preventing small particles from approaching large ones to within distances where colloidal forces become important. We can expect similar effects in papermaking suspensions, resulting in very low efficiencies for the deposition of fillers or fines on fibers. The efficiency can be improved by high molecular weight polymers which adsorb on the particles and can reduce the minimum distance of approach between a filler and a fiber. From model experiments on the deposition of T102 particles on cellophane, it can be concluded that the electrostatic forces also play an important role in fines and fillers retention. Usually no deposition occurs far below a critical deposition concentration (CDC) of electrolyte, slow deposition occurs just before the CDC and fast deposition above the CDC. Charged polymers, such as cationic polyelectrolytes, are most effective in retention because they can reduce the gap between a filler and a fiber during an encounter, and they ensure that electrostatic repulsion is negligible. Resides increasing the efficiency of deposition, retention aids can also increase the bond strength between a filler and a fiber, thus preventing or minimizing the rupture of fiber-filler bonds.

Abstract The maritime industry faces constant challenges in preventing ship collisions and ensuring adherence to the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs). This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of ship collision avoidance patterns utilizing Automatic Identification System (AIS) data. By examining AIS data parameters, including vessel speed, course, heading and the dynamic change in position, crucial insights into the avoidance of collision can be extracted. In this paper the encounters are extracted from the AIS data collected near Los Angeles Port. The raw data is preprocessed and visualised in a relative distance domain from the own ship. The encounters are filtered using a collision risk model and the encounter situations are labeled and classified into multiple classes using GRU-RNN deep learning technique.

This paper studies volatility spillovers in credit default swaps (CDS) between the corporate sectors and Latin American countries. Daily data from October 14, 2006, to August 23, 2021, are employed. Spillovers are computed both for the raw data and for filtered series which factor out the effect of global common factors on the various CDS series. Results indicate that most spillovers occur within groups that is, within the series of sovereign CDS contracts and the price contracts of CDS issued by global corporations. However, considerable spillovers are also registered between LAC sovereigns and corporations. Interesting differences are encountered between filtered and unfiltered data. Specifically, spillovers from countries to corporations are overestimated (by about 4.3 percentage points) and spillovers from corporations to sovereigns are underestimated (by about 5.8 percentage points) when unfiltered data are used. This result calls for a revision of results obtained from studies that do not consider the role played by global common factors in system spillovers. Like in most related studies, spillovers show considerable time variation, being larger during times of financial or economic distress. When looking at total system spillovers over time, those corresponding to unfiltered series are always larger than those corresponding to filtered series. The difference between the two time series is largest in times of distress, indicating that global factors play a major role in times of crisis. Similar conclusions are derived from network analysis.

Munitions are encountered in a variety of underwater environments as unexploded ordnance (UXO) or munitions and explosives of concern (MEC). These items can cause unacceptable explosive risks to critical infrastructure, recreational divers, and fishermen. The primary goal of the demonstrations was to validate an underwater suite of tools that can be used to render underwater UXO and MEC safe in shallow water (i.e., up to 100 ft). US Navy underwater ranges in the Gulf of Mexico, south of the Naval Support Activity–Panama City, were selected for the first two demonstrations to fully display the integrated system by processing inert munitions, such as the Navy 5 in./38 cal and the Army 105 mm High Explosive (HE) M1 projectile. The third demonstration, however, occurred at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Crane, Lake Glendora Test Facility, in Sullivan, Indiana. Twenty US Army 105 mm HE M1 projectiles filled with TNT were successfully processed. Overall, this project showed that Gradient Technology’s high-pressure waterjet demilitarization technology can be reliably operated underwater at depths less than 100 ft of seawater when the supporting equipment is located on the deck of a vessel or floating pier system.
