Resumo:
High resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy has been used to examine the inner-shell and valence-shell electronic excitation of a number of polyatomic molecules, including SF₆, SeF₆, TeF₆, ClF₃, C₂H₃F, C₂H₃Cl, C₂H₃Br, C₂H₃I, Ni(CO)₄, (CH₃)₂SO and SO₂. The inner-shell and valence-shell electron energy loss spectra (ISEELS and VSEELS) were measured under low momentum transfer conditions with impact energy in the range of 1-3.7 keV and 0° scattering angle. Under these conditions the spectra are dominated by electric dipole-allowed transitions. The ISEELS spectra include all accessible core excitations of these molecules below 1000 eV equivalent photon energy. A number of specific investigations have been performed in order to extend present understanding of the physical nature of electronic excitation phenomena, in particular those involving inner-shell electrons. In addition the present work illustrates new applications of ISEELS to the study of chemical phenomena. In the investigation of (Coulombic) potential barrier effects in the "cage" molecules SF₆, SeF₆, TeF₆ and ClF₃, f-type continuum shape resonances are observed for the first time in the spectra of TeF₆ and they show very different spectral behavior from the d-type continuum shape resonances observed in the spectra of SF₆ and SeF₆. Consideration of both the ISEELS and VSEELS spectra indicates that there is a weakening of the potential barrier in going through the series from SF₆ to SeF₆ to TeF₆. The Coulombic potential barrier model provides an extremely satisfactory understanding of (a) the co-existence of intense continuum shape resonances and intense Rydberg transitions plus direct ionization continuum; and (b) the number and symmetry of continuum shape resonances observed in the ISEELS spectra of ClF₃. The physical significance of Coulombic potential barrier effects is further convincingly demonstrated by a comparison of the "central atom" inner-shell spectra of SF₆, ClF₃ and HCl. In contrast to earlier work, the present comparative study of the He(I) and He(II) photoelectron spectra and the VSEELS excitation spectra of the monohaloethylenes (i.e. C₂H₃X; X = F, Cl, Br and I) suggests that the HOMO orbital in C₂H₃I is predominantly of iodine 5p[sub ⊥](out-of-plane) character rather than of π character whereas the reverse situation applies to the HOMO orbitals of C₂H₃F, C₂H₃Cl and C₂H₃Br. Based on a term value correlation analysis, substitutional effects are found to be most prominent in the σ* -type orbitals, while the π* and Rydberg orbitals are less influenced. Linear correlations between the C-X bond strength and the term values for both inner-shell and valence-shell transitions to the σ* (CX) orbital are also observed. The ISEELS and VSEELS spectra of Ni(CO)₄ are compared with the corresponding spectra in free CO. The C and O Is spectra of these two molecules show some notable similarities despite the very different manifold of final states available. In particular the inner-shell spectra of both molecules exhibit intense ls → π* and ls → σ* transitions. High resolution ISEELS has been used to obtain vibrational resolved C Is spectra of Ni(CO)₄ and free CO. The implications and possibilities of studying dπ →pπ back-bonding in transition metal carbonyl complexes by high resolution ISEELS spectroscopy are discussed. The inner-shell (S 2s, 2p, C Is) excitations of (CH₃)₂SO (DMSO) measured by ISEELS are compared with synchrotron radiation studies of the S Is photoabsorption spectrum. The pre-edge regions of these spectra are interpreted as excitations to common manifolds of virtual valence and Rydberg orbitals. A linear correlation between the S-C bond lengths and the term values of S 2p[sub 3/2] → σ* (S-C) transitions is demonstrated for DMSO and a number of other sulfur compounds. The S 2p, 2s and O Is ISEELS spectra of SO₂ as well as the S ls photoabsorption spectrum are compared with and assigned according to the results of multichannel quantum defect theory calculations. The calculated energies and oscillator strengths of spectral features in these spectral regions are generally in good quantitative agreement with the measurements.

Chun, Yoonjong. "The impact of electronic commerce on buyer-supplier relationships in the Korean electronics industry". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2004. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/2613/.

Resumo:
Buyer-supplier relationships are said to be developing toward more collaborative forms based on hierarchical cooperation and away from adversarial forms based on market competition. However, proponents of transaction cost economics (TCE) have predicted that e-commerce would lead to more competitive relationships because e-commerce reduces transaction costs. Several theories have been employed in formulating the research framework for this study to explain these seemingly contradictory positions. The main underpinning for the conceptual framework of the research is based on the rationale of TCE, the dichotomy between market and hierarchy; while other theories, relational exchange theory (RET) and resource dependence theory (RD F) are used to complement TCE. This integrative view that combines TCE, RET and RDT proposes the research hypothesis that utilization of e-commerce will facilitate a collaborative relationship between buyer and supplier both directly and via the mediating roles of assets specificity, trust and dependence. A questionnaire-based survey has been carried out into the Korean electronics industry since electronics industries of Korea are well developed, and the business culture of Korean industry is similar to that of other Asian countries. Exploratory factor analysis has been conducted on the data collected by the survey to discover the underlying structure for the questionnaire items. Structural equation modelling using AMOS Graphic 4.0 has been employed to test the research hypothesis. Focusing on buyers (suppliers) and their key suppliers (buyers) in the electronics industry, this empirical study provides a support for the view that utilization of e-commerce is reconciled with growing tendency toward collaboration as an interaction strategy in an industrial market. This study claims that e-commerce contributes to building a long-term collaborative relationship rather than a transactional exchange for short-term economic gain. In addition, depersonalization caused by e-commerce has not happened yet, and electronic interconnection consolidates assets specificity, trust and dependence and collaborative relationship between trading partners either direct or indirect way.

Resumo:
In many countries, motorcycle crashes constitutes a significant proportion of all road crash fatalities and injuries and safety measures can be successful only if much more attention is devoted to this issue. Several Roadside guard systems such as concrete barriers, wire rope barriers and steel guard rails are used to protect occupants of four wheels and heavy trucks. Yet motorcycle riders are vulnerable to any crash scenario, resulting in major injuries. Also the climatic conditions have a major impact on motorcyclists. Thousands of motorcyclists are killed or injured in road accidents. The need to provide and improve crash survival programs in collision environment is the subject matter of interest and research. In this research, simulation of full scale crash tests of a motorcycle with rider driven in an upright position and sliding on the road surface impacting on steel barriers and concrete barriers are carried out by DEKRA Accident Research, to analyze real-world crashes. It is most important to evaluate head injury risks as it causes a serious threat to life. The motorcycle model with a rider are developed in MADYMO 6.3 and validated using the real time barrier tests. Under normal road conditions, the motorcycle driven in an upright position is assumed to have a pre-crash velocity of 60km/h impacting at 12° on a concrete barrier. The validation criteria used are: motorcycle kinematics, rider kinematics and the rider injury criteria. The results obtained in this research are found to be in a reasonable correlation with the experimental data. A parametric study is then conducted to investigate the crash for various impact speeds (40 km/h, 60 km/h and 80 km/h) under different impact scenarios (6° impact, 8° impact, 12° impact, 24° impact, 45° impact, 60° impact and 90° impact). An icy road condition is then studied. A study of kinematics and injury parameters for a motorcycle rider is proven to be different under various impact speeds (40 km/h, 60 km/h and 80 km/h) under different impact scenarios (6° impact, 8° impact, 12° impact, 24° impact, 45° impact, 60° impact and 90° impact). Design of Experiments is conducted to study the contribution of the road condition, impact angles, speed and the interaction of these factors. The result from this study helps in understanding the factors affecting the crash and rider injuries. Design of Experiment also provides a valuable knowledge about the contribution of factors chosen (road type, angle of collision and speed) towards accidents.

Gupta, Naman. "Head impact evaluation onto conventional tempered glass and laminated glass car windows in side impact and rollover accidents". Thesis, Wichita State University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/7036.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
The occupant injuries in the side impact crash and rollover are more severe than those in frontal impacts as the occupant is partially or fully ejected through the side window and comes in contact with foreign objects such as poles, trees, other vehicles, etc. Since ejections are mainly caused by failure of side window glass conventionally made of tempered glass, the vehicle side window glass is increasingly being replaced with laminated glazing by the automotive industry. Laminated glass does not break upon impact and helps in keeping the occupant from ejecting out of the car in side impact or rollover. In this research, the impact injury potential to the human head is studied and quantified for both tempered glass and laminated glass windows. First, the finite element (FE) models of tempered glass and laminated glass are developed in Hypermesh. These FE models are quasi-statically tested with a hybrid III dummy free-motion head-form (FMH). Force versus displacement graphs are plotted and validated with the results obtained from a physical static experiment. A series of impact test simulations are conducted on both tempered and laminated glass with the H-III FMH at varying impact speeds. Acceleration and the head injury criteria (HIC) values are determined for each impact test simulation. The simulations clearly indicate that the tempered glass fails upon impact and the FMH ejects; however the laminated glass does not break and contains the FMH. A second series of impact test simulations involve a FE model of a rigid pole placed behind the two glass types to study the secondary head impacts. The results show that the tempered glass breaks and allows head to strike the pole with high head injury potential, whereas the laminated glass contains the head. Based on the results, this study demonstrates the laminated glass acts as a shield between the occupant and the surrounding objects and protects the occupant from ejecting.

Suryanarayana, Vidya. "Impact of hypervisor cache locking on performance". Diss., Wichita State University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/10616.

Resumo:
Server virtualization has become the modern trend in various industries. Industries are resorting to the deployment of virtualized servers in order to cut the cost of additional, expensive hardware and consolidate the servers on minimal hardware for easier management and maintenance. Virtualized servers are often seen connected to disk arrays in many industries ranging from small to medium business to large data centers. In such a setup, assuring a low latency of data access from the disk array plays an important role in improving the performance and robustness of the overall system. Caching techniques have been researched and used in the past on traditional processors to reduce the number of memory accesses and have proven benefits in alleviating the response times of applications. The research done in this paper explores caching on the hypervisor and analyzes the performance of data cache locking technique in hypervisor caches. The research aims at reducing the Input / Output (I/O) latency in a server virtualized Storage Area Network (SAN) setup, which thereby increases the performance of applications running on the virtualized servers. The authors introduce a miss table that can determine the blocks of data in the hypervisor cache that need to be locked. Way cache locking method is used for locking, such that only selected lines of cache are locked (not the entire cache). The proposed cache locking technique is later evaluated with the introduction of a small victim buffer cache and probability based cache replacement algorithm. Valgrind simulation tool was used to generate memory traces by virtual machines (VMs). Experimental results show an improved cache hit percentage and a considerable reduction in the I/O response time due to the proposed cache locking technique when compared to the results without hypervisor cache locking.

Resumo:
The objective of this research was to analyze the effects of impact loading on electronic component failure. A standard fiberglass composite printed circuit board (PCB) card was used in two impact tests. The first test consisted of a PCB card with four adhered strain gauges, which were mounted inside an aluminum box fabricated for testing. Impact testing was conducted with weights ranging from 0 to 30 lb., and the corresponding strain values were recorded. For the second set of impact tests, a new circuit card was mounted inside the aluminum box. The new circuit card maintained the same dimensions, but no strain gauges were attached. Solder joints were placed at nine different locations on the card, and testing was conducted to determine the impact load at solder joint failure. Both visual and resistance inspections were conducted after each impact. After seven drop tests were conducted, no failure had been detected. This lack of failure was attributed to the rigidity and substantial nature of the aluminum box used in testing. Upon completion of both impact tests, two Finite Element Method (FEM) models were built. The first FEM model represented a scaled version of the PCB card, four solder joints, and a silicon computer chip. Strain data from the PCB card testing was input into the model, and a corresponding solder joint strain was calculated. The second FEM model was a full-scale version of the aluminum box and mounted circuit card. A force was applied to the box, and the various stains were recorded on the PCB card. The collection of this data has helped to establish a valuable relationship between the strains in PCB cards and solder joints, and it will increase the understanding of electronic component failure under impact loading conditions.

Among the different load conditions on a mechanical system, impact loading and its contribution to the design process require special consideration. The static methods of stress, strain, and deflection analyses are not applicable under impact conditions. The main goal of this study is to address the fundamental aspects of impact and to examine its applications for different design requirements. First, different approaches to the impact phenomena, namely stereomechanics, contact mechanics, stress wave propagation, finite element method, and energy method are investigated in this dissertation. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are pointed out, and the areas of application of each method and the degree of accuracy are examined. Quantification of energy absorption during impact is the most complicated part of impact modeling and is one of the topics of interest addressed in this dissertation. Application of the impact analysis methodologies in vehicular accidents and protection of occupants are the eventual goals of this research, demonstrated using some case studies and applicable examples. Because occupant safety is a major concern in the automobile and aerospace industries, a crashworthy design must be able to dissipate the kinetic energy of impact in a controlled manner. Four test cases or applications related to impact energy management or dissipation, impulse mitigation, and impact injury biodynamics are thus presented. The application examples include the design of a truck side guard and quantification of its effects on reducing occupant injury in the collison of a small car with a truck; lumbar load attenuation for seated occupants of a rotorcraft; injuries to pedestrians impacted by a sport or utility vehicle equipped with a frontal guard; and investigation of a motorcyclist impact with roadside barriers. For each case, an analysis methodolgy is developed, and from the modeling and simulations, impact design issues are addressed.

According to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports on aircraft accidents, 80 percent of all crashes occur on water and land. The research in this thesis used computational finite element modeling and analysis to study the effects of impacts on water and soft soil with respect to the structural integrity of an aircraft’s airframe during a crash. The effects of these impacts play a vital role in the design phase of an aircraft. The objective of this research was to compare the computational finite element technique for impact on water and soil, and to correlate it with the experiments. The nonlinear explicit finite element code together with the equation of state (EOS) and fluid-structure interaction (FSI) are used in the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) technique. A validation study of water and soft-soil properties on impact analyses was carried out in three different experimental phases using the following: a rigid spherical ball, a penetrometer, and a flask ball. Finally, an airframe structure study was conducted in water and soil. Initially, the impact simulations were carried out using Lagrangian analysis, followed by the ALE technique, and then the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. Acceleration was observed as an important parameter to validate in the analysis. Both ALE and SPH methods showed more accurate results than those obtained using Lagrangian analysis and were similar to that of the experimental data. Comparing the results from analyzing water and soil impacts with a rotorcraft indicated that water impact produces 33% less g-value and around 90% deformation compared to soil impact, thus indicating that impact on a water surface might be safer than impact on a soil surface. The impact study on water and soil was intended to evaluate the general behavior of the deformation, or g-value, for structural analyses only, and results show that the Lagrangian approach is recommended, if the soil and water is of small interest.

Online purchasing is becoming increasingly common as a purchasing mode. At the onset of e-commerce it was thought that success was guaranteed merely by being present on the internet and offering low prices. Currently customer service has proved itself to be a key element for achieving good results in a website (Zeithaml, Parasuraman & Malhotra, 2002b). In this context, the study of commercial website quality has emerged as an area of strategic importance. As in traditional stores, service quality and customer satisfaction seem to play vital roles in the success and survival of Internet sites.

Resumo:
In an environment where it has become increasingly difficult to attract consumer attention, marketers have begun to explore alternative forms of marketing communication. One such form that has emerged is product placement, which has more recently appeared in electronic games. Given changes in media consumption and the growth of the games industry, it is not surprising that games are being exploited as a medium for promotional content. Other market developments are also facilitating and encouraging their use, in terms of both the insertion of brand messages into video games and the creation of brand-centred environments, labelled ‘advergames’. However, while there is much speculation concerning the beneficial outcomes for marketers, there remains a lack of academic work in this area and little empirical evidence of the actual effects of this form of promotion on game players. Only a handful of studies are evident in the literature, which have explored the influence of game placements on consumers. The majority have studied their effect on brand awareness, largely demonstrating that players can recall placed brands. Further, most research conducted to date has focused on computer and online games, but consoles represent the dominant platform for play (Taub, 2004). Finally, advergames have largely been neglected, particularly those in a console format. Widening the gap in the literature is the fact that insufficient academic attention has been given to product placement as a marketing communication strategy overall, and to games in general. The unique nature of the strategy also makes it difficult to apply existing literature to this context. To address a significant need for information in both the academic and business domains, the current research investigates the effects of brand and product placements in video games and advergames on consumer attitude to the brand and corporate image. It was conducted in two stages. Stage one represents a pilot study. It explored the effects of use simulated and peripheral placements in video games on players’ and observers’ attitudinal responses, and whether these are influenced by involvement with a product category or skill level in the game. The ability of gamers to recall placed brands was also examined. A laboratory experiment was employed with a small sample of sixty adult subjects drawn from an Australian east-coast university, some of who were exposed to a console video game on a television set. The major finding of study one is that placements in a video game have no effect on gamers’ attitudes, but they are recalled. For stage two of the research, a field experiment was conducted with a large, random sample of 350 student respondents to investigate the effects on players of brand and product placements in handheld video games and advergames. The constructs of brand attitude and corporate image were again tested, along with several potential confounds. Consistent with the pilot, the results demonstrate that product placement in electronic games has no effect on players’ brand attitudes or corporate image, even when allowing for their involvement with the product category, skill level in the game, or skill level in relation to the medium. Age and gender also have no impact. However, the more interactive a player perceives the game to be, the higher their attitude to the placed brand and corporate image of the brand manufacturer. In other words, when controlling for perceived interactivity, players experienced more favourable attitudes, but the effect was so weak it probably lacks practical significance. It is suggested that this result can be explained by the existence of excitation transfer, rather than any processing of placed brands. The current research provides strong, empirical evidence that brand and product placements in games do not produce strong attitudinal responses. It appears that the nature of the game medium, game playing experience and product placement impose constraints on gamer motivation, opportunity and ability to process these messages, thereby precluding their impact on attitude to the brand and corporate image. Since this is the first study to investigate the ability of video game and advergame placements to facilitate these deeper consumer responses, further research across different contexts is warranted. Nevertheless, the findings have important theoretical and managerial implications. This investigation makes a number of valuable contributions. First, it is relevant to current marketing practice and presents findings that can help guide promotional strategy decisions. It also presents a comprehensive review of the games industry and associated activities in the marketplace, relevant for marketing practitioners. Theoretically, it contributes new knowledge concerning product placement, including how it should be defined, its classification within the existing communications framework, its dimensions and effects. This is extended to include brand-centred entertainment. The thesis also presents the most comprehensive analysis available in the literature of how placements appear in games. In the consumer behaviour discipline, the research builds on theory concerning attitude formation, through application of MacInnis and Jaworski’s (1989) Integrative Attitude Formation Model. With regards to the games literature, the thesis provides a structured framework for the comparison of games with different media types; it advances understanding of the game medium, its characteristics and the game playing experience; and provides insight into console and handheld games specifically, as well as interactive environments generally. This study is the first to test the effects of interactivity in a game environment, and presents a modified scale that can be used as part of future research. Methodologically, it addresses the limitations of prior research through execution of a field experiment and observation with a large sample, making this the largest study of product placement in games available in the literature. Finally, the current thesis offers comprehensive recommendations that will provide structure and direction for future study in this important field.

Resumo:
Mobile ad hoc sensor networks are characterized by dynamic changes in communication links and network topology mainly due to node mobility. In such networks, it is a challenge to build a communication system that lasts longer and requires less reconfiguration and less communication overhead. In this study, we propose an on-demand topology reconfiguration approach for multi-agent systems aimed at enhancing the connectivity and performance. The proposed strategy groups nodes, elects cluster-heads and finally selects gateways for inter-cluster communication. This study, also, seeks to investigate the impact of topology structural characteristics on consensus building among multi-agent nodes. The structural properties evaluated are the algebraic connectivity ratio, average path, average cluster coefficient, average matching index, modularity and the average participation. The consensus is measured by nodes average state update. Statistical methods are employed to explore the interaction between these structural properties and the consensus. A theoretical analysis is provided to support the statistical results. Finally, a comparative study of three distributed strategies for task allocation in a multi-agent system is presented. The objective is to determine for each node its course of action and the tasks it needs to accomplish. The methods are based on self-organizing map technique, Hungarian method and a linear programming optimization formulation. A theoretical section is provided to support the dynamics of these techniques and some of the results.

Response of a material impacted by projectiles especially bullets, or blast fragments, is extremely important in determining the range of impact it can sustain. As explicit finite element codes improve and advances material models become available, the hydrocodes find more widespread application in many industries. In this thesis, a study of ballistic response is implemented using simulation of thin metal targets in LS -DYNA. Parametric studies are conducted to study the effects of various factors on the damage process. Further in the study an attempt has been made to study the response of composite targets to the projectile impact. For the composite target, a finite element model is implemented with Chang-Chang failure criteria. Comparisons of the finite element simulations to the experimental data include general as well as the time history response. Results indicate that the residual velocities from the experimental tests correlate well with the ones from finite element validation. A parametric study is then conducted with the validated models. Parameters including as projectile velocity, projectile mass, projectile geometry boundary conditions, target thickness target yield strength, target failure strain and friction between the target and the bullet are considered, which affect the Ballistic Impact process. This study demonstrates the accuracy and effectiveness of the finite element simulation of the impact tests on thin metallic targets with the help of Finite Element softwares.

The issue of race in the United States is complex at best. Ongoing racial disparities provide confirmation for the ongoing relevance of race in our communities. As racism has shifted from overt to less obvious forms, it has become more difficult to gauge exactly how much progress we have made. Measuring racial biases is even more complicated, especially as racial biases have become increasingly subtle. One way to measure authentic behavior is through the use of field experiments, which include elements of deception. The present study utilizes field experiment methodology to measure subtle biases in judging a scholarship contest. A fictional scholarship organization was created to examine choice and perceived progress toward racial equality through the lens of prospect theory and the adjustment and anchoring heuristic. Undergraduate students at Wichita State University were randomly selected to participate as judges in a scholarship contest between two fictional finalists who had mixed qualifications. Within-group variance among students who identify as white (N =655) was examined to view how reference points influence choice. Results indicate that choices relied on actual information in each profile, with preference for the higher GPA rather than the race of the finalist. Race was a factor when participants viewed progress differently and when they used a future reference point for making an assessment of progress. Several demographic variables also influenced the rating of each finalist. The findings of the present study provide some support for prospect theory and the adjustment and anchoring heuristic. It is clear that subtle biases are present, although complicated to detect. Implications for future research are discussed, as well as suggestions for interventions that address racial divisions in communities.

Through the standby function, an electrical device goes out of your main operation mode (in use); but remains on, assuming a waiting function to save electricity, until the consumer reuse the equipment. In this dissertation, the estimated power consumption is presented with the use of standby function in electrical appliances from domestic use; and the financial impact of this waste to the population. The study was motivated as a way to contribute to the real understanding of this consumption, and offer subsidies that serve as warning; since there is an increased presence of the standby technology in existing devices, and the emergence of new equipments that has an idle consumption (when not operating), perhaps this scenario may be going against the current policies of energy conservation. To estimate, initially was used information from Electrical Appliances Ownership Survey to draw a picture of how each device is used in standby operation; then collected information about power consumption obtained through measurements of each electrical equipment, where it was identified that cable TV is the biggest villain of the idle standby consumption. The last step was to extrapolate the estimates for a local electric utility and Brazil, and simulate the waste of electrical energy consumption in the standby electrical household appliances, coming to the result of 1.6 TWh/year of waste allocated to residential consumers in Brazil, which represents 1,9 percent of the energy sales in the segment.

An increasing number of students are learning in classrooms that employ electronic presentations designed in PowerPoint and other similar software programs. The design of the slides in such electronic presentations has an impact upon student learning, and ample recommendations are made within the literature as to specific strategies that serve as presumed best practices for the design of those slides that will best facilitate learning. While most of such recommended strategies are well supported by cognitive theory – they are considered to positively impact learning by contributing to decreased cognitive load, leveraged dual coding, and facilitated active processing, for example – many of them are not supported by empirical evidence that they do in fact enhance learning. Some of the recommended best practice strategies unsupported by empirical evidence include the use of progressive disclosure, dimming, and highlighting of text instead of full disclosure of text. Through the development and use of four separate electronic presentations, each of which was designed to employ one of these specific strategies (full disclosure, progressive disclosure, dimming, and highlighting), this study examined the impact of such strategies on student learning. The findings of this study indicate that significant differences are not evident in learning among the four different strategies. As such, this initial foray into the examination of the effectiveness of these four strategies indicates that any of the four strategies may be used with equal impact in the design of electronic presentations by instructors who want to help foster student learning.

The use of electronic monitoring (EM) as a tool to supervise high-risk offenders has increased in the field of criminal justice in the state of Texas. Although EM is now widely used to supervise high-risk offenders to prevent them from committing further crimes, it is unclear whether EM has achieved the purpose of reducing reoffenses during parole supervision. Hirschi's social bond theory, which was later developed into social control theory, was used as the framework for this general qualitative study to explore retired parole officers' perceptions concerning whether EM is successful in preventing high-risk offenders from committing additional crimes. Interview data were collected from 10 retired parole officers who supervised high-risk offenders on EM in Harris County, Texas. The findings revealed that the 10 officers perceived EM to be an effective tool, but they perceived the role of capitalizing on positive social bonds was equally important in controlling criminal behavior. Specifically, the officers perceived that their bond with the high-risk offenders on EM could diminish offenders' propensity to commit new crimes. Opportunities for positive social change stemming from this study include recommendations to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to develop policies and training that is consistent with social bond theory, and retrain parole officers to emphasize to offenders positive contacts and relationship with family and continuing employment during the term of parole release in order to reduct opportunities for reoffense and futher victimization to the community.

The purpose of this research work is to evaluate the tax impact of the use of electronic emission systems from the application and evaluation of each system to see their tax effects, as well as the effects of the absence of the use of the system and all this in the Lurin livestock companies for the purposes of 2018 projecting the impact at the end of the year. In accordance with the latest Superintendency Resolution No. 254-2018/SUNAT, the companies that have been mentioned in Superintendency Resolution No. 300-2014/SUNAT will be obliged to issue electronic invoices as of 2019. Provides doubts about which system to choose or understand the difference between each one since SUNAT issues various resolutions that confuses the electronic issuers and other users could not even give importance to the issue. That is why companies must consider the changes that will arise in this new electronic invoicing process, and that will be developed from our qualitative and quantitative research. As part of the research methodology, we have managed to gather important opinions from experts and collaborators who work or have experience in the livestock sector, through in-depth interviews and surveys. In the same way, a case study was developed in order to evaluate the tax and operational impacts on the company by each ESS. After analyzing the data collected and having identified what is the impact on the companies, the conclusions and recommendations that will benefit the companies of the livestock sector with the purpose of choosing or using the best ESS for their business are exposed.

As adults reach advanced ages, the purpose of physical activity may shift from disease prevention to functional fitness and mobility. The purpose of the study is to test the hypothesis that engaging in an active lifestyle is associated with higher functional fitness in older women. Functional fitness was assessed by the Senior Fitness Test in 125 women (73.42 ± 8.84 yrs). Participants wore an accelerometer for 7 days without altering their normal activity. Accelerometer data were downloaded, moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) determined via proprietary filtering, and time spent in each intensity was calculated. A 5 day average of time spent in MVPA was organized into 4 groups. Frequency distributions were calculated to examine the number of participants meeting ACSM recommendation for MVPA. With respect to MVPA, only 18% of participants met ACSM recommendations by engaging in 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity for at least 5 days per week. Nearly half of the participants were classified as normal on most functional measures. To determine if a relationship existed between the participants 5 day MVPA, functional fitness, age and weight, correlation coefficients were calculated. The strongest relationships were found between MVPA and the 6 min walk (r = 0.52, p ≤ 0.001), chair stands (r = 0.46, p ≤ 0.001), and up & go (r = -0.44, p ≤ 0.001). To determine if engaging in an active lifestyle is associated with higher functional fitness, participants were grouped by time spent in moderate intensity physical activity to determine a cut-off on improvement observed in functional fitness. MVPA group comparisons were made using one-way ANOVAs with follow-up Post Hoc analysis. The results revealed significant differences between groups on all measures except sit and reach. The one-way ANOVA indicated a threshold of 20 minutes for the 6 min walk, chair stand, and up & go. With regard to upper body strength and flexibility, less than 10 min of MVPA was observed to be detrimental to performance.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provided over a billion dollars to state workforce investment systems for creating employment opportunities for disadvantaged youth and every state was responsible for developing structured programs to connect youth to employers who would not only provide income for the youth, but also aid in their occupational skill development (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, 2009). The Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas (WASCK) developed the Area IV Kansas Summer Youth Employment Programs (SYEP), under the direction Congress and the Kansas Department of Commerce, and over two summers created over seven hundred job opportunities for disadvantaged youth. This study, through ecological qualitative methods, gathered the perspectives of ten adolescents, 18 or older, who participated in the 2010 federally funded SYEP, through the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas. These personal stories using the framework of Ecological Systems Theory and the lens of Social Capital, supported the premises that (a) learning the ecosystems of individuals can provide insights into their daily lives, their history, and their lived experiences in a way that provides a window into how services and prevention efforts can be targeted toward them; (b) people make a difference in the lives of others and supportive institutional agents can have a profound effect on one‘s ability to gain social capital and work toward goal setting and attainment; and (c) programs, such as the SYEP, make a difference in the lives of youth and help them make connections to positive institutional agents, learn workplace dynamics and dialogue, and provide them with a entrance into areas of the workforce that have historically been preserved for the higher level working class and middle class.

Kevlar, an aramid fiber, is one of the most widely used materials for various industrial applications, such as aerospace, automotive, sports, wind energy, biomedical, optics, as well as defense due to its extraordinary mechanical and thermal (fire retardancy) properties and lightweight. In the present study, graphene nanoflakes and nanoclays dispersed in epoxy resins at different weight percentages (0 to 10 wt.%) were incorporated with dry Kevlar fibers through wet-layup process, and then cured under vacuum and high temperature to make Kevlar/epoxy hybrid composites. The prepared composite panels of 16-ply were impact tested using a low-velocity impactor, and C-Scanned before and after the impact tests. During the impact tests, the impact force vs. displacement, impact force vs. time and impact energy values of the composite panels were analyzed and compared. The c-scans of the damaged composite panels were analyzed for damage area and depth. The damaged test panels were exposed to UV light and moisture for 8 days, with an interval of 4 days. The water contact angles around the damaged area were measured for each damaged composite panel. The test results, impact analysis and damage analysis showed that the nanoscale inclusions in the Kevlar/epoxy composites had a major impact in dissipating the kinetic energy into heat, other forms of energy, and elastic and plastic deformation, and thus saving the composite panels from the major damages. This comparative research study illustrated that the variation in nanomaterials in the epoxy of a composite makes a significant difference in the impact response of the laminate. This result may be useful for the further improvement of the Kevlar-based products in various industries.

Where customers have freedom of choice, their level of satisfaction will determine if they are loyal, long-term and profitable customers. If customers are not satisfied they will take their business elsewhere. The increase in the level of satisfaction in key element areas would increase overall customer satisfaction and increase customers' future behaviours such as purchasing on the Internet and recommending the e-retail websites to others. This thesis also explains in the previous chapters that early adopters of eretailing exhibited more of the elements of service transactions than goods transactions and that these elements best explain the e-retailer-consumer relationship. Creating the trust between a customer and its service provider {e-retailer} is one of the key factors in ensuring customer loyalty and retention. Other challenges that were discussed include controlling customer data, integrating on-offline orders, delivering goods cost effectively and handling of returns. Strategies e-retail businesses implement and use in improving product and service quality, gain market share and maintain greater customer loyalty were discussed in this research. If the e-retail businesses can continue to improve consumers' satisfaction they will be rewarded with continued improvement in overall customer satisfaction, customer loyalty and retention and increase profitability. While the Internet certainly poses new challenges for e-retailers, and offers them invaluable new tools, a spate of new research suggests that there is no reason for traditional retailers to consider themselves doomed. The big question is: how does Internet technology assist e-retail businesses to create loyal e-customers?

Resumo:
Thesis (MScEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Energy-efficient (EE) lighting projects form a substantial percentage of Demand Side Management (DSM) initiatives. These largely entail the exchange of one lighting technology for another more energy-efficient lighting technology. The DSM process typically involves a proposal from an Energy Services Company (ESCO) to retrofit an existing lighting technology with another on the property of a third party, the client. For scoping purposes, ESCOs perform energy savings calculations based on information obtained from the datasheets of the relevant lighting technologies. Such datasheet specifications rarely incorporate the effects of supply voltage fluctuations on energy consumption, which can impact on the accuracy of the savings calculations. Furthermore, modern EE lighting technologies such as Compact Fluorescent lamps (CFLs) employ power electronic circuitry that can in principle give rise to Quality of Supply (QoS) problems such as harmonic distortion. The usage profiles of artificial light fittings targeted in DSM interventions represent another important factor in determining the savings impacts of such projects. There is currently limited information on methodologies for obtaining such usage profiles. In practice, the scoping and impact verification of EE lighting projects are conducted using project-specific applications and spreadsheets that are time-consuming and error-prone. In view of the above-mentioned considerations, this investigation aims to address the lack of voltage-dependent energy consumption data and QoS impacts by conducting a laboratory investigation for all relevant lighting technologies, namely incandescent lamps, CFLs, tubular fluorescent lamps and high intensity discharge lamps. Appropriate mathematical models for the voltage-dependent energy consumption characteristics of these light technologies are derived from the measurements. The supply current harmonic distortion associated with the various lamp types are investigated, particularly with regard to neutral current loading caused by zero-sequence harmonics. Methodologies for obtaining accurate and reliable light usage data using commercially available data loggers are reviewed. A database structure is subsequently designed and implemented to store the information relevant for impact assessment, including the mathematical models of energy consumption, supply voltage profiles and light usage profiles. Finally, an Integrated Software Program (ISP) is developed to implement a methodology for assessing the savings impacts of practical EE lighting projects, using the database as the main input source. The ISP is tested by implementing a real case study. It is shown that the ISP yields accurate results for the case study considered in the evaluation.

This exploratory study was focused on mental health, broadly defined, as part of a larger community assessment research project. The primary goals of this study were to determine how a mental health initiative impacted the perceived care provided by the mental health-serving organizations and also to identify promising practices of grantees. Because the goal of this study was illumination and understanding, as opposed to prediction or causal determination, the data collected were qualitative, coming from open-ended questions and archival data obtained from the agencies. Organizations reported many strengths and successes, such as improved client outcomes, partnerships and collaboration among agencies and community members, as well as having a committed board, staff, administrators, and volunteers. Challenges for organizations included measuring outcomes, securing adequate staffing levels, and securing adequate funding. Overall, mental health-serving organizations reported positive changes in the community, but could benefit from longer granting periods, capacity building activities, improved client access to services, greater community awareness and reduced stigma associated with mental illness

Resumo:
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of three communication partner variables on conversational effectiveness including: (a) interpersonal cognitive complexity, (b) partner perceptions of communicative effectiveness of spouses/close relatives with aphasia, and (c) partner perceptions about the quality of their relationship with their spouses/close relatives with aphasia. Ten dyads (one person with aphasia and their communication partner) participated in this study. The communication partners were trained to use conversation strategies based on Kagan's (1999) supported conversation protocol. Pre- and post-training 10-minute conversations were videotaped and analyzed using adapted versions of Kagan's supported conversation scales. Scores obtained from these scales were compared to scores obtained from scales indexing the partner variables of interest. Results showed scores on supported conversation measures to be significantly improved (p < .05) after training (Kagan et al., 2004). Interpersonal cognitive complexity did not correlate significantly with the conversational effectiveness of trained partners; however, there was a significant correlation with the conversational effectiveness of persons with aphasia. Partner perceptions of communicative effectiveness of persons with aphasia were significantly inversely correlated with their own measure of conversational effectiveness; but not with the conversational effectiveness of persons with aphasia. Partner perceptions of the quality of his or her marital/close relative relationship did not significantly correlate with the conversational effectiveness of either conversation partner. Results indicate that both interpersonal cognitive complexity and partner perceptions of the communicative effectiveness of their spouse/relative with aphasia share a relationship with conversational effectiveness. A non-significant relationship was found between mutuality and conversational effectiveness and there was little if any relationship among the three partner variables of interest.
