The article presents methods and means of 3D design of printed circuit boards in CAx. Automated placement of elements on the board is implemented by means of API SolidWorks using Visual Studio C#. The API application works by an algorithm that allows you to create a 3D layout of printed circuit boards. Each component of the library contains a conditional graphic notation of the element. With the help of the implemented algorithm, a comprehensive approach is provided, which consists in the fact that already at this stage the preparation of the strategy for tracing the conductors of the future printed circuit board is carried out, the classes of circuits are determined and the necessary technological parameters are set, as well as the data necessary for the preparation of design documentation is generated. After the completion of the work on the input of the scheme, a check is made for the presence of errors and compliance with the specified parameters, and if the test is successful, a list of circuits is generated for transfer to the tracing program. From this moment, any possibility of errors in the subsequent stages of design is excluded. CAD DipTrace was used to trace printed circuit boards and generate g-code. Printed circuit board processing is carried out on a CNC machine - CNC3018 using the Candle program. The printed circuit board tracks are created by forming a groove between the track and the metallized coating of the textolite. With the help of the formed height map, the uniform removal of the metallization layer over the entire area of the textolite is ensured. In addition, holes are drilled for the output elements of the circuit, the printed circuit board is cut along the contour and covered with a layer of tin to prevent oxidation of its metallized coating. The considered CAD methods and tools made it possible to automate the design of the printed circuit board of the FM radio receiver control module. As a result of the performed work, means of automating the design of printed circuit boards were applied and a fully functional printed circuit board with a track width of 0.8 mm was obtained.

Electronic equipment of aircraft during operation is exposed to vibrations with a frequency of 20-2000 Hz and a vibration acceleration of up to 20g. Almost half of all failures of on-board equipment are caused by the negative impact of vibration. For effective vibration protection of the equipment during its design, a vibration analysis is carried out, recognizing resonance modes. The difficulty of modeling vibration processes in printed circuit boards lies in the deviation of calculated values of critical frequencies and values obtained experimentally with the help of shakers. The main reasons for this in the known analytical methods are the impossibility of fully accurate consideration of the concentrated masses and elastic-damping characteristics of individual electronic components of the board, its fasteners and device cases, which, in turn, leads to the appearance of coupled oscillations. The paper presents the results of vibration analysis by well-known analytical methods, numerical and experimental methods. It is shown that the accuracy of determining the natural frequencies and forms of board oscillations is significantly influenced by the geometric, inertial, and elastic-damping characteristics of the board components. The effectiveness of numerical modeling methods is demonstrated. When arranging massive components at the stage of designing the board, it is necessary to take into account that the natural frequency of the board depends on the position of its center of gravity and increases sharply when approaching the edge of the board. Boards with a small number of components have a lower critical frequency than their corresponding empty boards due to the increase in mass. Instead, boards densely filled with components have a higher natural frequency than empty boards due to increased stiffness. In order to increase the accuracy of the vibration analysis, it is necessary to conduct a preliminary analysis of the elastic and damping parameters of attaching the board to the case and the case itself.

Air quality monitoring is performed by agencies using instrumentation based on extremely reliable technologies but characterized by high costs. An alternative gas sensing technology is the electrochemical gas sensor which, even though having a lower accuracy, offers some advantages, such as low costs and high miniaturization. Among the gas sensors designed for air quality monitoring, the most interesting are the ones based on electrochemical cells. To operate such sensors, it is necessary to have an electronic circuit typically implemented on electronic boards provided by the sensor manufacturer. The research described in this document regards the design and implementation of an electronic board to support the operation of the “B” series of the electrochemical gas sensors produced by Alphasense. This brand provides electronic boards that, on one side, are capable of offering excellent performances, but on the other side, are characterized by some limitations, such as the possibility of using only one sensor at a time. The experimental activities of our laboratory in the field of real-time air quality monitoring by using low-cost devices and technologies demand electronic boards to support the operation of such sensors having a higher grade of flexibility. To overcome this and other limitations, a new electronic board has been designed and implemented. In this document, its design and the implementation details are described.

Electronic main boards generally provide the supply and control functions of a system. All electronic main boards include inputs and outputs and are designed according to the design requirements. In this study, a safe and low-cost switching mode power supply (SMPS) board is designed using a flyback converter topology to drive the AC and DC outputs. The triode for alternating current (TRIAC)-based safe and low-cost main board includes a flyback configured transformer with additional winding for driving the TRIAC as an AC output switch in noise immune quadrants II and III. TRIAC is used to switch AC outputs instead of a relay, and the isolation distances of the safety criteria are provided by an optocoupler. In this way, the relay usage is over, and one TRIAC and one optocoupler do the same work that is done by one relay. In this way, the cost of the AC output switch decreases. In addition, the number of AC switches covering the area on the printed-circuit board (PCB) of the mainboard decreases. The flyback topology is designed with half-wave rectified and the transformer is designed with extra winding for producing negative voltage with respect to primer reference for providing negative gate current of TRIAC. TRIAC-based AC output switched, safe, and low-cost main boards can be used for white good main boards, automation (PLC) applications, and automotive electronic control systems. This study provides cost-effective solutions in these areas.

A wide range of medical devices have significant electronic components. Compared to open-source medical software, open (and open-source) electronic hardware has been less published in peer-reviewed literature. In this review, we explore the developments, significance, and advantages of using open platform electronic hardware for medical devices. Open hardware electronics platforms offer not just shorter development times, reduced costs, and customization; they also offer a key potential advantage which current commercial medical devices lack—seamless data sharing for machine learning and artificial intelligence. We explore how various electronic platforms such as microcontrollers, single board computers, field programmable gate arrays, development boards, and integrated circuits have been used by researchers to design medical devices. Researchers interested in designing low cost, customizable, and innovative medical devices can find references to various easily available electronic components as well as design methodologies to integrate those components for a successful design.

Companies working on semiconductors must currently assure the customers of not only the performance of the semiconductor device per se, but also its performance when it is implemented in a real board, therefore including the role of parasitic effects. It is therefore very important to evaluate, especially during the design phase, not only the single device, but the complete board and their mutual interactions. This consideration opens a new area of investigation in the field of electronic systems engineering. In the current literature, the problem of a software evaluation of parasitic dynamics and electromagnetic effects on printed boards is addressed from the point of view of researchers. Moreover, it is fundamental to have a complete view of the various tools that could be usefully adopted from the perspective of manufacturers. This is the main motivation of this technical note, which performs a comparative analysis of the most prominent software tools for printed circuit boards’ (PCBs) simulation. The main features, the key aspects, and the limitations of the software packages are analyzed in terms of the industrial design of power electronics devices, in order to ensure efficiency and fastness in the semiconductor market.

The failure rate of the printed circuit board electronic testing process is higher than acceptable at a Lenze Americas factory. This thesis will understand the root causes of failure, and use system engineering methods to decide what course of action should be taken. A Tradespace analysis is used to help decompose some of the complexity into a visualization that simplifies the decision process. The Tradespace analysis suggests that more utility can be achieved by upgrading the design of existing test fixtures versus purchasing off of the shelf solutions. The second phase will identify a design concept, offer specific design solutions, and finally a fully designed system that is capable of improving the performance of the test fixtures in electronic board test area by 50%. The system is then upgradable with in-line conveyors to run autonomously decoupling the operator from the process.

A channel board was designed for a DRFM circuit. The DRFM is implemented in a Virtex-4 FPGA from Xilinx. In the future a similar channel board is intended to be used for target echo generation in ELSI which is an electronic warfare simulator at Saab Bofors Dynamics in Linköping.

Besides the DRFM circuit the channel board consists of analog-to-digital converters, digital-to-analog converters, Ethernet plug-in board with a microcontroller, voltage regulators, FPGA configuration memory, voltage amplifiers, current amplifiers, oscillator, buffers/drivers and bus transceivers. The sample rate is 200 MHz and LVDS signalling standard is used between the DRFM circuit and the converters.

The channel board has a JTAG interface which enables in-system programming of the FPGA. This implies that the DRFM can easily be redesigned. An external computer can manage the channel board via Ethernet. Software was developed for the microcontroller on the channel board and for the external computer. The function of the channel board is heavily dependent on the DRFM circuit.

The channel board design resulted in the assembly of a prototype circuit board. Measurements were performed in a lab and the channel board was approved to be integrated in ELSI for further tests.

This thesis describes the design and implementation of a video compression development board as a standalone embedded system. The board can capture images, encode them and stream out a video to a destination over a wireless link. This project was done to allow users to test and develop video compression encoders that are designed for UAV applications. The board was designed to use an ADSP-BF533 Blackfin DSP from Analog Devices with the purpose of encoding images, which were captured by a camera module and then streamed out a video through a WiFi module. Moreover, an FPGA that has an interface to a logic analyzer, the DSP, the camera and the WiFi module, was added to accommodate other future uses, and to allow for the debugging of the board. The board was tested by loading a H.264 BP/MP encoder from Analog Devices to the DSP, where the DSP was integrated with the camera and the WiFi module. The test was successful and the board was able to encode a 2 MegaPixel picture at about 2 frames per second with a data rate of 186 Kbps. However, as the frame rate was only 2 frames per second, the video was somewhat jerky. It was found that the encoding time is a system limitation and that it has to be improved in order to increase the frame rate. A proposed solution involves dividing the captured picture into smaller segments and encoding each segment in parallel. Thereafter, the segments can be packed and streamed out. Further performance issues about the proposed structure are presented in the thesis.

Traditional vibration measurement methods involve placing accelerometers at discrete locations on a test object. In cases where the test specimen is small in mass, the addition of these measurement transducers can alter its dynamic behavior and lead to erroneous test data. In this thesis a Non-Contact Vibration Measurement and Analysis System has been designed, built, and tested for electronic board testing. Through a product design process, all feasible methods were considered and three optically based concepts were explored: holographic interferometry, area scaling, and displacement sensor grid. Through concept testing and analysis, the displacement sensor grid method was chosen for the design. The final system incorporates four laser displacement sensors with a vertical scrolling mechanism that attaches to the vibration table's side rails. This manual scanning system provides a quick, low cost method for capturing multiple points on the test object during vibration testing. The MATLAB based software package acquires the raw sensor output and processes it with a five step analysis program. With this software, an 8x4 grid of electronic board displacements were easily transformed into a movie showing the board displacing through its first mode. The system requires the sensors be positioned lcm away from the test object with the sensors reading up to [plus-minus]lmm of movement. The sensors have a maximum sample rate of 7.8 kHz and can be used to measure the displacements of any surface type or material. The measurement grid resolution is 0.7 inches horizontally 0.4 inches vertically. Testing showed that the system captured the natural frequency and peak displacement of the board's first mode within 1.5% accuracy and 0.7% accuracy respectively
(cont.) when compared with previous accelerometer grid testing. Exceeding its design goals, this non-contact measurement and analysis device provides a highly versatile, accurate, and low cost optical alternative to accelerometers. Also it shows numerous benefits over more complex and costly optical measurement methods. The use of this system eliminates any question of whether mass loading effects are tainting vibration test data. A hardware and software manual are included for reference at the end of this thesis along with a software CD.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Satellites are not all made equal. The large number of possible orbits, desired functionality and budget constraints are but a few of the factors that influence the design of a satellite. Given a particular set of design requirements, a number of designs may meet these requirements. Each of these designs will typically entail a trade-off between a number of (conflicting) parameters, whilst still satisfying the system requirements. The On-Board Computer (OBC) of a satellite, the satellite subsystem primarily responsible for the operational control of a satellite, can consequently be designed in any of a number of different ways. As the factors that influence the flight performance of an OBC differs to those of a terrestrial computer, the OBC design will therefore be significantly different. A high-level overview of the factors that impact OBC design and operation is presented. Improvements to the existing designs are proposed. In conclusion, a number of guidelines for a future OBC design also are given.

Future spacecrafts will require more computational and processing power to keep up with the growing demand in requirements and complexity. ScOSA is the next generation on-board computer developed by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). The main motivation behind ScOSA is to replace the conventional on-board computer with distributed and reconfigurable computing nodes which provides higher performance, reliability, availability and stability by using a combination of the COTS components and reliable computing processors that are space qualified. In the current ScOSA system reconfiguration and routing of data between nodes are based on a static decision graph. SpaceWire protocol is used to communicate between nodes to provide reliability. The focus of the thesis is to design and implement a dynamic routing protocol for ScOSA which can be used in future for not only communicating between the nodes but also for reconfiguration. SpaceWire IPC is a customized protocol developed by DLR to provide communication between the nodes in a distributed network and to support monitoring, management and reconfiguration services. The dynamic routing protocol proposed in this thesis is primarily derived from the monitoring mechanism used in the SpaceWire IPC. PULL type monitoring mechanism is modelled and simulated using OMNeT++. The results obtained provide a qualitative outlook of the dynamic routing protocol implemented.

AbstractAn increasing research effort is being carried out to profit from the advantages of photonics not only in long-range telecommunications but also at short distances, to implement board-to-board or chip-to-chip interconnections. In this context, Silicon Photonics emerged as a promising technology, allowing to integrate optical devices in a small silicon chip. However, the integration density made possible by Silicon Photonics revealed the difficulty of operating complex optical architectures in an open-loop way, due to their high sensitivity to fabrication parameters and temperature variations. In this chapter, a low-noise mixed-signal electronic platform implementing feedback control of complex optical architectures is presented. The system exploits the ContactLess Integrated Photonic Probe, a non-invasive detector that senses light in silicon waveguides by measuring their electrical conductance. The CLIPP readout resolution has been maximized thanks to the design of a low-noise multichannel ASIC, achieving an accuracy better than −35 dBm in light monitoring. The feedback loop to stabilize the behaviour of photonic circuits is then closed in the digital domain by a custom mixed-signal electronic platform. Experimental demonstrations of optical communications at high data-rate confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

AbstractAn interesting approach to achieving verifiability in voting systems is to make use of tracking numbers. This gives voters a simple way of verifying that their ballot was counted: they can simply look up their ballot/tracker pair on a public bulletin board. It is crucial to understand how trackers affect other security properties, in particular privacy. However, existing privacy definitions are not designed to accommodate tracker-based voting systems. Furthermore, the addition of trackers increases the threat of coercion. There does however exist techniques to mitigate the coercion threat. While the term coercion mitigation has been used in the literature when describing voting systems such as Selene, no formal definition of coercion mitigation seems to exist. In this paper we formally define what coercion mitigation means for tracker-based voting systems. We model Selene in our framework and we prove that Selene provides coercion mitigation, in addition to privacy and verifiability.

Abstract This paper discusses a methodology to predict the cost of assembling printed circuit boards (PCB). It is formulated using the flexible assembly system in the Experimental Printed Circuit Board Assembly Facility (EPCBAF) of the GINTIC Institute of CIM. The concept of Boothroyd and Dewhurst is applied in this work. The assembly cost accounts for insertion, test and rework costs only. Although focusing on the specific configuration of the system in EPCBAF, the discussion is directed towards broad applications, enabling a wide variety of assembly systems to be simulated.

The paper deals with the feasibility of a flexible robotic cell for the disassembly of electronic components. First, the need for an automated process for the end of life management of electronic boards is motivated: the reuse of electronic components represents a potential cost saving opportunity for a class of electronic board producers, other than an effective means to improve the waste management efficiency and the sustainability of the electronics sector. Then, starting from a state of the art survey, a technical implementation of the cell is proposed. Finally, some preliminary tests of the disassembly equipment, aimed at setting the most relevant process parameters, are described.

Boards made of composites are susceptible of structural failure or irreversible damage under thermally raised stresses. A thermal/structural finite element model is integrated in this study to enable the predictions of the temperature and stress distribution of vertically clamped parallel circuit boards that include series of symmetrically mounted heated electronic modules (chips). The board is modeled as a thin plate containing four heated flush rectangular areas that represent the electronic modules. The finite element model should be to able to accept the convection heat transfer on the board surface, heat generation in the modules, and directional conduction inside the board. A detailed 3-D CFD model is incorporated to predict the conjugate heat transfer coefficients that strongly affect the temperature distribution in the board and modules. Structural analyses are performed by a FE model that uses the heat transfer coefficients mentioned above, and structural elements capable of handling orthotropic material properties. The stress fields are obtained and studied for the models possessing two and there laminates with different fiber orientations, and inter-fiber angles. Appreciable differences in values of max stress intensity were observed as the fiber orientation and inter-fiber angle changed. The angular parameters in this study were guided by experimental design (DOE) concepts leading to a metamodel of the stress intensity in the board. The optimum design variables found by the equations of the metamodel.

This paper describes a design optimization of power distribution networks using embedded passive technology. A frequency-domain methodology was used to study the impedance characteristics of printed circuit board power planes with embedded decoupling capacitors, and also the interaction with discrete capacitors, package structures and on-chip capacitors. Two different thin-core materials were analyzed. Key aspects of power distribution networks including plane spreading inductance, plane pair via inductance and transfer impedance were also analyzed. Utilizing broadband PDN models, extracted with full-wave EM techniques to account for frequency-dependent behaviour, frequency-domain SPICE simulations were carried out to determine the system impedance characteristics at multiple port locations up to 2 GHz. The frequency-domain analysis shows that in bare boards, significant SSN interaction between different port locations within the printed circuit board is present. It is concluded that the proper use of high-K distributed capacitors at optimal locations on the printed circuit board helps to alleviate SSN interaction between different port locations. Several multi-layer test vehicles have been fabricated and characterized, with good correlation between simulation results and measured values.

Abstract The dynamic behavior of printed circuit (PC) boards exercises strong influence on the reliability of electronic equipment. In this paper, the dynamic behavior of a PC board is studied by means of computation and verified by experiment with results compared favorably. This shows that FE modeling strategy used is sound. In general, excitement frequencies induced by external environment are in the range from several Hz to several hundred Hz. In order to avoid product failures due to resonance, it is desirable to make the fundamental natural frequency of PC boards as high as possible. Two structural modified design methods to raise the fundamental frequency are given with a numerical example.

Abstract Electronic manufacturing of circuit boards has undergone major changes in the last decade as new technologies have emerged and are perfected to replace older ones. A result of the increased board layout densities and higher levels of integration at the chip level is a dramatic increase in the value of circuit boards. The benefit is much more functionality in smaller boards, but the disadvantage is significant losses when a defective board must be scrapped. The same technology that has increased the density of the board functionality has made manual rework to correct manufacturing defects almost impossible. Higher levels of circuit integration in moving from VLSI to ULSI (Ultra Large Scale Integration) have required more pin-outs on the packages which in turn has resulted in finer lead pitches and a change from through-hole mounting to surface mounting technology (SMT). These two changes, with the decreased interchip spacing, have necessitated the use of automation to perform reliable component replacement on defective boards. This paper discusses the complexities of integrating several automation technologies into a single robotic electronic remanufacturing workcell. Involved are vision guidance, control software development, and multiple special end-effector designs for the several required steps, including defective component removal, board cleaning, solder paste dispensing, component placement, and laser soldering [1].

The cooling of boards and components in telecommunication chassis is becoming progressively more challenging as the power dissipation of the components increases. The internet market is demanding higher speeds and the internet gear makers try to accommodate the increasing demand of the consumer. Hence there are situations where the power requirement for one rack unit of the chassis is reaching 500–600 W currently and expected to reach about 800–1000 W in 1–2 years. The power dissipations on components are currently in the vicinity of approximately 60–80 W and expected to reach roughly 100–120 W in the near future. This paper presents a design effort wherein a chassis has been analyzed and designed for a cooling capacity on the order of 600 W for the board to the extent that one is able to cool about 80 W for the ASICs and other components on the board.

Payment Systems Report - June of 2021. Banco de la República, fevereiro de 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.32468/rept-sist-pag.eng.2021.

Resumo:
Banco de la República provides a comprehensive overview of Colombia’s finan¬cial infrastructure in its Payment Systems Report, which is an important product of the work it does to oversee that infrastructure. The figures published in this edition of the report are for the year 2020, a pandemic period in which the con¬tainment measures designed and adopted to alleviate the strain on the health system led to a sharp reduction in economic activity and consumption in Colom¬bia, as was the case in most countries. At the start of the pandemic, the Board of Directors of Banco de la República adopted decisions that were necessary to supply the market with ample liquid¬ity in pesos and US dollars to guarantee market stability, protect the payment system and preserve the supply of credit. The pronounced growth in mone¬tary aggregates reflected an increased preference for liquidity, which Banco de la República addressed at the right time. These decisions were implemented through operations that were cleared and settled via the financial infrastructure. The second section of this report, following the introduction, offers an analysis of how the various financial infrastructures in Colombia have evolved and per¬formed. One of the highlights is the large-value payment system (CUD), which registered more momentum in 2020 than during the previous year, mainly be¬cause of an increase in average daily remunerated deposits made with Banco de la República by the General Directorate of Public Credit and the National Treasury (DGCPTN), as well as more activity in the sell/buy-back market with sovereign debt. Consequently, with more activity in the CUD, the Central Securi¬ties Depository (DCV) experienced an added impetus sparked by an increase in the money market for bonds and securities placed on the primary market by the national government. The value of operations cleared and settled through the Colombian Central Counterparty (CRCC) continues to grow, propelled largely by peso/dollar non-deliverable forward (NDF) contracts. With respect to the CRCC, it is important to note this clearing house has been in charge of managing risks and clearing and settling operations in the peso/dollar spot market since the end of last year, following its merger with the Foreign Exchange Clearing House of Colombia (CCDC). Since the final quarter of 2020, the CRCC has also been re¬sponsible for clearing and settlement in the equities market, which was former¬ly done by the Colombian Stock Exchange (BVC). The third section of this report provides an all-inclusive view of payments in the market for goods and services; namely, transactions carried out by members of the public and non-financial institutions. During the pandemic, inter- and intra-bank electronic funds transfers, which originate mostly with companies, increased in both the number and value of transactions with respect to 2019. However, debit and credit card payments, which are made largely by private citizens, declined compared to 2019. The incidence of payment by check contin¬ue to drop, exhibiting quite a pronounced downward trend during the past last year. To supplement to the information on electronic funds transfers, section three includes a segment (Box 4) characterizing the population with savings and checking accounts, based on data from a survey by Banco de la República con-cerning the perception of the use of payment instruments in 2019. There also is segment (Box 2) on the growth in transactions with a mobile wallet provided by a company specialized in electronic deposits and payments (Sedpe). It shows the number of users and the value of their transactions have increased since the wallet was introduced in late 2017, particularly during the pandemic. In addition, there is a diagnosis of the effects of the pandemic on the payment patterns of the population, based on data related to the use of cash in circu¬lation, payments with electronic instruments, and consumption and consumer confidence. The conclusion is that the collapse in the consumer confidence in¬dex and the drop in private consumption led to changes in the public’s pay¬ment patterns. Credit and debit card purchases were down, while payments for goods and services through electronic funds transfers increased. These findings, coupled with the considerable increase in cash in circulation, might indicate a possible precautionary cash hoarding by individuals and more use of cash as a payment instrument. There is also a segment (in Focus 3) on the major changes introduced in regulations on the retail-value payment system in Colombia, as provided for in Decree 1692 of December 2020. The fourth section of this report refers to the important innovations and tech¬nological changes that have occurred in the retail-value payment system. Four themes are highlighted in this respect. The first is a key point in building the financial infrastructure for instant payments. It involves of the design and im¬plementation of overlay schemes, a technological development that allows the various participants in the payment chain to communicate openly. The result is a high degree of interoperability among the different payment service providers. The second topic explores developments in the international debate on central bank digital currency (CBDC). The purpose is to understand how it could impact the retail-value payment system and the use of cash if it were to be issued. The third topic is related to new forms of payment initiation, such as QR codes, bio¬metrics or near field communication (NFC) technology. These seemingly small changes can have a major impact on the user’s experience with the retail-value payment system. The fourth theme is the growth in payments via mobile tele¬phone and the internet. The report ends in section five with a review of two papers on applied research done at Banco de la República in 2020. The first analyzes the extent of the CRCC’s capital, acknowledging the relevant role this infrastructure has acquired in pro¬viding clearing and settlement services for various financial markets in Colom¬bia. The capital requirements defined for central counterparties in some jurisdic¬tions are explored, and the risks to be hedged are identified from the standpoint of the service these type of institutions offer to the market and those associated with their corporate activity. The CRCC’s capital levels are analyzed in light of what has been observed in the European Union’s regulations, and the conclusion is that the CRCC has a scheme of security rings very similar to those applied internationally and the extent of its capital exceeds what is stipulated in Colombian regulations, being sufficient to hedge other risks. The second study presents an algorithm used to identify and quantify the liquidity sources that CUD’s participants use under normal conditions to meet their daily obligations in the local financial market. This algorithm can be used as a tool to monitor intraday liquidity. Leonardo Villar Gómez Governor
