This research examined individual differences in how people think about social status via a scale with eight proposed factors. Items designed to measure these factors were administered to an online sample (n = 1,009). A factor analysis revealed eight meaningful factors: rejection of status, high-perceived status, respect for hierarchy, low-perceived status, status display, egalitarianism, belief in hierarchy, and enjoyment of status. The 40 items forming these eight factors were then administered to a new sample of online participants (n = 303) alongside measures of self-esteem, social dominance orientation, competitiveness, assertiveness, social comparison orientation, narcissism, and hypersensitive narcissism. Confirmatory factor analyses from this subsequent study supported the model derived in the first study. A preliminary analysis of the construct validity of this new “Status Consciousness Scale” scale was undertaken by examining the correlations between the factors and other personality variables that were predicted to relate to each factor.

AbstractGray extrapolates from circuit models of psychopathology to propose neural substrates for the contents of consciousness. I raise three concerns: (1) knowledge of synaptic arrangements may be inadequate to fully support his model; (2) latent inhibition deficits in schizophrenia, a focus of this and related models, are complex and deserve replication; and (3) this conjecture omits discussion of the neuropsychological basis for the contents of the unconscious.

The article is devoted to the study of the nature of consciousness within the framework of the information concept. The paper proposes a definition of consciousness as an informational environment in which an extended model of reality is realized. The process of realization of this extended model is defined as thinking. The result of thinking is information objects that form a system in the form of information environment. Information objects are reflections of the real world properties, not directly, but by means of translation through a special object – a carrier of consciousness. In the case of human consciousness, such a carrier is a human being (represented in the form of his nervous system). As a result, consciousness can be qualified as a simulacrum of reality, i.e., a model of a model: an information model of the carrier of consciousness, which in turn is a means of physical modeling of the real "big" world. Possible mechanisms mediating thinking are considered. For this purpose, two new concepts are introduced: neural circuit and neurophysical pattern. An approach to the study of self-consciousness based on the localization of the consciousness carrier in the multidimensional space of states of initial real objects, as well as their reflections in the form of information objects is proposed. This localization is ensured by the presence of feedbacks. Summarizing the results of the study, the article states the following connection between consciousness, self-consciousness and subjectness: under certain conditions (when consciousness is localized in the state space of the carrier of consciousness), consciousness acquires the property of self-consciousness, a special case of which (when the initiator of changes determining localization is the carrier of consciousness) is self-consciousness endowed with subjectness.

<p>Cognitive and metacognitive skills are recognized and studied since antiquity. From the theory of Aristotle, according to which knowledge is product of the human mind and Platonic gnosiology and the theory of true knowledge, to the modern cognitive science, the question of how people acquire knowledge, has occupied a multitude of scientists. In this article we present a cognitive-based approach to the process of acquiring knowledge, we analyze the dominant theories of knowledge, theories of intelligence, as well as learning theories, and thus we propose an eight-layer pyramid of knowledge. We also analyze the cognitive processes and metacognitive skills required to get an individual to the highest layer of the knowledge pyramid.</p>

The self is herein recognized as self-consciousness, a broad dynamic system of self-recognition and self-reference. Eight psychosomatic and extended cognitive functions working as an interactive whole are proposed to constitute self-consciousness: (1) somatic domain and body image; (2) situation and domestic range; (3) agency and power to act; (4) introspection, mindfulness, and metacognition; (5) first person discourse and appropriation; (6) episodic memory, autobiography, and role; (7) attribution and alterity; (8) conscience, moral consciousness, and ethical stance. These functions, complemented with considerations about depersonalization and selflessness, are briefly defined and described. These subsystems may work independently but they may interact and variably coalesce according to the demands of the task. Since self-awareness would require a dynamic swarm-like activation pattern of the cluster, the self does not reside in particular brain sites or networks but depends on top-down and bottom-up mechanisms coupled with incoming and outgoing sensory-motor data loops. This psychophysical theory avoids the swing between internal and external elements in favor of an embracing I-World patterned process that comprises neural, bodily, behavioral, environmental, and social dimensions converging in the construction and expression of self-conscious and personal identity experiences integrated by a participant brain.

This article explores the process of global revolution reflected in the globalization of consciousness and society. Human world faced the integration of two worlds &ndash; the information world of consciousness and thought, and the world of social reality. Consciousness and society correspond and complement each other. The concept of global revolution is defined as the revolution within consciousness, individual and global. Individual consciousness should endure the group flows of energy, reach more integrity, enhance moral component, which would create conditions for the formation of global consciousness. The research methods include the developed by the author concept of noospheric energitism; systemic, synergetic and energy-information approaches, as well as dialectics of fundamental principles of the existence. Global revolution encapsulates not only the revolution in consciousness, but also in forms of its manifestation, i.e. the forms of social reality. The incipient global consciousness needs a new environment, since it cannot manifest itself in the old forms. Social organization gives way to social orderliness, mobile and dynamic forms of self-discipline. The modern global reality is represented by the model of network mind-civilization , consisting of the planetary web of cities as civilizational centers, which hold the major changes, connected by material, energy and information circuit. This model explains the mechanism of unfolding a global revolution that unites civilizational and consciousness-based components, allows to adequately describe and understand the global revolutionary and evolutionary transformations within consciousness and other forms of social organization, plan and guide panhuman development, foresee risks and reduce the possible negative consequences.

MRI has potential as a translational approach from rodents to humans. However, given that mouse functional MRI (fMRI) uses anesthetics for suppression of motion, it has been difficult to directly compare the result of fMRI in “unconsciousness” disease model mice with that in “consciousness” patients. We develop awake fMRI to investigate brain function in 15q dup mice, a copy number variation model of autism. Compared to wild-type mice, we find that 15q dup is associated with whole-brain functional hypoconnectivity and diminished fMRI responses to odors of stranger mice. Ex vivo diffusion MRI reveals widespread anomalies in white matter ultrastructure in 15q dup mice, suggesting a putative anatomical substrate for these functional hypoconnectivity. We show that d-cycloserine (DCS) treatment partially normalizes these anormalies in the frontal cortex of 15q dup mice and rescues some social behaviors. Our results demonstrate the utility of awake rodent fMRI and provide a rationale for further investigation of DCS therapy.

Many educational activities and disaster drills are conducted for the purpose of developing disaster prevention consciousness. It is necessary to develop a standardized psychological scale to measure disaster prevention consciousness; this would help evaluate the effect of activities that improve disaster prevention consciousness. To do this, a qualitative study using a Constructivist Grounded Theory Approach was conducted. First, elements of disaster prevention consciousness were explored through one-hour interviews with a total of ten disaster prevention professionals. They responded to six questions on the characteristics and behaviors of a person who seemed to possess high disaster prevention consciousness. The study yielded six elements in knowledge (ex. “Reality of disaster”), eight elements in behavior (ex. “Preparation for disaster”), and ten psychological elements (ex. “Over-reliance on one measure against disasters,” “Prediction and analysis of situations,” and “Taking a comprehensive view”). A new anti-disaster consciousness model was developed based on these elements.

Purpose – This study aims to examine the impacts of demographic variables (gender, age, income, education) and food product involvement (FPI) on food-related consumer decision-making styles (CDMS). Design/methodology/approach – Original Sproles and Kendall's CSI instrument (1986) was applied in the food-product context. Data were collected using consumer phone survey. Eight separate regression analyses were conducted to test hypotheses. In each model independent variables were socio-demographic variables and FPI, while dependent variables were eight food-related CDMS. Findings – Regression analyses indicate that each of food-related CDMS are affected by different antecedent variables. Perfectionism, high-quality consciousness was affected by gender, age, income and FPI; Brand consciousness by age, income and FPI; Novelty consciousness by FPI; Recreational, hedonistic shopping consciousness by gender, age and FPI; Price consciousness by age, education and income; Impulsiveness by age, education and income; Confusion by overchoice by education and FPI, and Brand loyalty by education, income and FPI. Originality/value – The study applies modified Sproles and Kendall's CSI instrument (1986) in the food product context. The present study also provides a more definitive conclusion about the relationships between demographics, FPI and food-related CDMS. The analysis determined how demographics and FPI affect food-related CDMS.

PurposeThis paper aims to conceptualize how business and society co-evolve their efforts to maximizing the greatest well-being of the greatest number following a conscious-unconscious, staged, dialectical process.Design/methodology/approachThis study used a conceptual framework linking eight components of well-being (economic, environmental, social, cultural, psychological, spiritual, material and physical), with stages of consciousness and the co-evolution of business and society.FindingsStages of consciousness – traditionalist, modernist, post-modernist and integral – moderate both the pace and direction with which business and society co-evolve to the greatest well-being of the greatest number across eight components of well-being.Research limitations/implicationsThis is a conceptual framework which integrates existing empirical relationships, but the overall framework itself is yet to be empirically tested.Practical implicationsThe whole process of maximizing well-being can become more conscious for both business and society. This requires making unconscious components conscious and becoming conscious of the inseparability of the eight components of well-being as a counter-balanced set.Social implicationsBusinesses and societies can maximize well-being across eight inseparable components. But implementing this is a staged process requiring progressing populations through stages of consciousness. Earlier stages lay the platform for a critical mass of people able to integrate the eight components.Originality/valueKnowledge of well-being is dominated by disciplinary disconnection and bivariate studies; yet, current meta-crises and calls for post-conventional leaders indicate the importance of an integrated multidisciplinary well-being model which explains past efforts of business and society, diagnoses current problems and points towards more viable paths.

This is a thesis about The Eight Circuit Model, a modern mind map developed for the purpose of illumination and enlighenment by Dr. Timothy Leary in the 1970s. Later, authors such as Robert Anton Wilson and Antero Alli elaborated upon the idea to make it more wholesome and compatible with other ideas expressing the same basic principle. In short, it is an intellectual abstraction of the evolution of consciousness through a series of eight stages, which Leary called Circuits. By looking at the brain as an evolving bio-computer, with thoughts working as software, upgrading itself through neurological imprints, Learys created a Hero's Journey for the modern age.The thesis tries to analyze this idea, as it is presented in Robert Anton Wilsons Prometheus Rising, through the lens of the discourse category ”Western Esoterism.” A hard-to-define subject but described as ”the dialectic of the hidden and the revealed in the field of religion.”

This far-ranging chapter provides unified explanations of data about audition, speech, and language, and the general cognitive processes that they specialize. The ventral What stream and dorsal Where cortical stream in vision have analogous ventral sound-to-meaning and dorsal sound-to-action streams in audition. Circular reactions for learning to reach using vision are homologous to circular reactions for learning to speak using audition. VITE circuits control arm movement properties of synergy, synchrony, and speed. Volitional basal ganglia GO signals choose which limb to move and how fast it moves. VAM models use a circular reaction to calibrate VITE circuit signals. VITE is joined with the FLETE model to compensate for variable loads, unexpected perturbations, and obstacles. Properties of cells in cortical areas 4 and 5, spinal cord, and cerebellum are quantitatively simulated. Motor equivalent reaching using clamped joints or tools arises from circular reactions that learn representations of space around an actor. Homologous circuits model motor-equivalent speech production, including coarticulation. Stream-shroud resonances play the role for audition that surface-shroud resonances play in vision. They support auditory consciousness and speech production. Strip maps and spectral-pitch resonances cooperate to solve the cocktail party problem whereby humans track voices of speakers in noisy environments with multiple sources. Auditory streaming and speaker normalization use networks with similar designs. Item-Order-Rank working memories and Masking Field networks temporarily store sequences of events while categorizing them into list chunks. Analog numerical representations and place-value number systems emerge from phylogenetically earlier Where and What stream spatial and categorical processes.

The interpretive ethnological model “The Decalogue and Harmonizing Hermeneutic Maxims of Obligatoriness: An Aspect of Upbringing” is developed within the framework of a noetic interdisciplinary system of our four concepts (concept of humanization of myth; concept of megamodern; concept of ethicizing mythological consciousness; concept of aesthetic meaning). This system is based on the works by many outstanding scholars, including the achievements of interpretive (hermeneutic) anthropology by C. Geertz, the ideas of J.J. Wunenburger, K. Hubner, V. Frankl, E. Fromm, N. Berdyaev, J. Ortega y Gasset, K. Jaspers, etc. In the interpretative model, the eight “implicit principles of upbringing (world perception, behavior) according to the Decalogue” revealed by us are applied: these principles are based on the concept of man and the Universe represented in the Ten Commandments. This model allows examining distinct hermeneutic maxims as a sort of ethnocultural specificity of shaping the epoch of “new humanism for the 21st century” (UNESCO). A Family Portrait in the Midst of Chisinau Landscape, memoir prose by Susanna Cușnir, is examined according to this model. One of the revealed hermeneutic maxims reads: “The Universe is such that man can follow his creative impulses at any age”.

The instrumentarium of this research is based upon the achievements of interpretive anthropology by C. Geertz and includes a number of our developments implemented within the concept of ethicizing mythological consciousness (a special component of the interdisciplinary system of four concepts which is being developed by us). These developments include: a) eight fundamental principles of Jewish upbringing which are implicit principles of upbringing (view of life, behavior) according to the Decalogue and are based on the concept of man and the Universe represented in the Ten Commandments; b) an interpretive ethnological model “The Decalogue and Harmonizing Hermeneutic Maxims of Obligatoriness: An Aspect of Upbringing.” The narratives by Raisa Lvovna Gandelman, born in 1903 in Chisinau, serve as materials for the study. Raisa Lvovna’s childhood and youth memories about the way her mother was treating her when the girl was sick, Ruhele’s recollections of her father, a proposal of marriage made to her at the age of seventeen, etc., are analyzed. The revealed hermeneutic maxims are identified as ethnocultural specificity of shaping the epoch of “new humanism in the 21st century” (UNESCO).

In recent years, many cases of child sexual abuse have been exposed by the media. In addition to unscrupulous criminals and imperfect laws, children cannot correctly understand "sex" and lack of self-protection consciousness, which is also one of the sources of a series of tragedies. Therefore, the social attention of child sex education continues to rise. No matter family, school or society begin to advocate sex education, among which the role of family sex education can not be ignored. Based on the relevant research on the design of child sex education services, many literatures have identified the stakeholders of child sex education, put forward the issue of child sex education from the perspective of behavior design, and put forward the importance of parental participation. The key point of sex education for children is to drive parents' educational behavior and improve children's sexual knowledge acquisition degree. Parents' reasonable and perfect sex education can give children a healthier body and mind and avoid harm. But what kind of education form and content can better achieve the purpose has become the focus of social attention. This paper introduces the way of service design to integrate related resources and construct a service system to meet the needs of parents to carry out sex education for children. Information systems or software that strengthen, change or form a person's behavior, purpose or attitude without coercive means are called persuasion systems. It is proposed by Professor BJ Fogg from Stanford University to use persuasion technology to realize the design purpose of persuasion system, which can also be called "persuasive design". At present, theories of behavior table, FBM behavior model, eight steps of persuasive design, and persuasive web design have been formed, all of which are attributed to the unremitting research of scholars such as BJ Fogg and Andrew Chak. FBM model is a new model established by Fogg to study human behavior. It is a behavior model based on persuasive design. According to THE FBM model, there are three basic factors for individuals to produce behaviors. The first is motivation factor, which requires users to have certain motivation support to realize certain behaviors. Ability factor refers to the user's ability to achieve a behavior, or the difficulty of a behavior itself to the user's ability requirements; A trigger is a point of opportunity for the final completion of the action.Based on these theories, this paper will study the sex education model suitable for parents to realize in the family.With the support of persuasion theory, the behavior and needs of parents and children are analyzed to obtain the behavior table, and the three elements of behavior realization are analyzed according to Fogg behavior model. First of all, this paper analyzes the different behaviors that parents and children may have in the process of sex education, analyzes the relationship between them by using the behavior table, and analyzes the causes behind it. Secondly, this paper constructs the Fogg behavior model of children's sex education. Fogg behavior model is a new model established by Fogg to study human behavior. It is a behavior model based on persuasive design. According to Fogg's behavior model, there are three basic factors for individuals to produce behavior: motivation factor, ability factor and trigger factor. This paper analyzes the basic elements of parents' and children's behaviors in the process of sex education from three aspects of motivation, ability and trigger points, and puts forward some strategies to improve the quality of sex education for children, hoping to better improve the quality of sex education and play a positive role in promoting the development of sex education for children in the future.

The underlying node model of the cross-connect is sketched in Fig. 1. Eight incoming fibers each supporting 16 densely multiplexed frequencies can be routed arbitrarily to 16 frequencies carried on each of eight outgoing fibers. After power splitting of an incoming OFDM signal, tunable frequency selective receivers select a prescribed OFDM channel using the circuit switched mode. Due to their high selectivity the tunable heterodyne receivers provide the required signal demultiplexing function and in turn a reordering function. Conceptually, switching is performed in the space domain by electrical space switching stages with free-space interconnects between them. The choice of 1.5 μm for the wavelength is suitable for an optical transparent network, where the electronic switches will be replaced by optical switches in a further step of development.

Abstract Parallel simulation of fluid power systems using the transmission-line modeling method offers the benefit of increased speed of execution, but requires the system model to be partitioned on to individual processors [Burton, 1994]. In this paper we address the automatic placement of component models on processors of a distributed memory parallel machine. A genetic algorithm is used to map the different processes onto several processors. The objective is to minimise the total processing time in order to achieve real time performance. For fine grained computation problems the communication time cannot be neglected, i.e. we consider the computation and the communication time of each task. This mapping problem is a combinatorial optimization problem which can be reduced to the graph partitioning problem which is shown to be NP-complete. Combining genetic algorithms with heuristics leads to optimal or very good sub-optimal solutions. A hydraulic example circuit is partitioned in four and eight subsystems, respectively, and the simulation is implemented on a Transputer based platform. Using eight processors a speed up of 3.7 was achieved.

In this paper we report on the electrical impedance spectroscopy characterization of the attachment of two mammalian cell lines: endothelial cells (RFPEC) and fibroblast cells (V79). For electrical cell–substrate impedance sensing (ECIS) of the endothelial cells a commercially available eight-well cell culture impedance array (ECIS-8W1E) was used. The impedance measurements were recorded with cell culture medium (without cells) and with endothelial cells or fibroblast cells in the culture medium over a frequency range from 100 Hz to 100 kHz. The impedance measurements were compared to the equivalent circuit model. The impedance measurements were also simulated using COMSOL Multiphysics™, a commercially available modeling package.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The rise in demand for electric and hybrid vehicles, the issue of bearing currents in electric motors has become increasingly relevant. These vehicles use inverters with high frequency switch that generates the common mode voltage and current, the main factor responsible for bearing issues. In the machine structure, there are some parasitic capacitances that exist inherently. They provide a low impedance path for the generated current, which flows through the machine bearing. Investigating this problem in practical scenarios during the design stage is costly and requires great effort to measure these currents. For this reason, a strategy of analysis aided by electromagnetic simulation software can achieve desired results in terms of complexity and performance. This work proposes a methodology using Ansys Maxwell software to simulate two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) model of a three-phase permanent magnet motor with eight poles. The 2D model was used to obtain the parasitic capacitances in the motor plane, and the 3D model was used to acquire the coil head or end-winding effect capacitances. The proposed methodology is capable of predicting favorable results in terms of measuring capacitive bearing currents using a voltage pulse as an input source. The great contribution of this work is the computational reduction of the calculation of parasitic capacitances and the implementation of the machine's common mode circuit to predict the bearing and common mode currents.</div></div>

Phased arrays generate ultrasonic waves by using recisely-defined time delays for each element in an ultrasonic array group, this permits constructive and destructive interference of the wavefronts to form the pre-defined beam. So, ultrasonic phased arrays are well suited to weld inspections. First, beams can be multiplexed across the array, in what is called “electronic scanning”. This permits very rapid inspections of components, typically an order of magnitude faster than a single transducer raster scan. Second, the beam can be swept through a range of angles without moving the array; this is called “beam steering”, and the inspections are typically called “azimuthal” scans or “sectorial” scans. Before weld inspecting, the time delays between elements were computed using a specific model and compared to experimental delays obtained using through transmission tests. This paper describes the application of phased array on pipelines’ weld inspection. The detail hardware designs of linear phased arrays system and the summary of system performance are presented. This inspection system includes eight ultrasonic signal transmitting and receiving circuit units, which are used to control time sequence of ultrasonic beam and select channel used for waves construction, and amplify the received ultrasonic signal. Each unit is connected with 16 probe elements (total 128 elements in this system), and can receive 4-way ultrasonic signals (channel selection is done by RF switching). Additional performance is gained by intensively using FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) technology for memory and delay counters. Since the working frequency or FPGA is 100MHz, the delay time less than 10 ns is realized by analogue delay line. This system not only has the functions of conventional ultrasonic inspector, but also can display the defect shape and its size on the screen.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The Indian market for battery-powered electric vehicles (xEV) is growing exponentially in the coming years, fueled by tumbling lithium-ion battery prices and favorable government policies. Lithium-ion battery is leading in clean mobility ecosystem for electric vehicles. LiBs efficient and safe performance for tropical climatic conditions is one of the primary requirements for xEV to succeed in India.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">The performance of LiBs, however, is impacted due to ambient temperature as well as the heat generated within cell due to the load cycle electrochemical reaction. The acceptable operating temperature region for LiBs normally is between 20 °C to 45 °C and anything outside of this region will lead to degradation of performance and irreversible damages. Therefore, understanding the thermal behavior is very crucial for an efficient battery thermal management.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">In this study the authors have focused on battery module thermal management by incorporating the thermal interface material (TIM) considering the target application of 2W &amp; 3W EVs. A 3X3 battery module of 3s3p configuration were made with 21700 cylindrical form factor cells. The role of thermally conductive &amp; electrically insulating silicone encapsulant for the thermal benefit and better thermal management was studied whose conductivity ranges from 0.48 W/mK to 2.7 W/mK. The experiments were carried out in two ambient temperature i.e. 25 °C &amp; 45 °C. The discharging of the module was carried out at 1C. To analyze the thermal profile of the cells in the module, temperature measurements were acquired at eight locations with thermistors. It was observed that there is significant drop of Maximum temperature (T<sub>max</sub>) of greater than 10°C with TIM and the temperature uniformity (ΔT) is observed to be within 3 °C along with TIM. All the experiment was first carried out through virtual simulation. Equivalent circuit model of the cell was modelled from HPPC test and electro thermal virtual simulation of the experiments were carried out at cell and module level. Good correlation is observed and used for optimization of the BTMS design. Based on the output, authors conclude that the silicone-based TIM have greater role to play for the efficient battery thermal management in the battery pack.</div></div>

Abstract Undergraduate control courses are usually significantly improved when in-class instruction is backed up with experiments aimed at providing the students an opportunity of experiential learning. The rapid development of computer multimedia technology has resulted in a tendency toward a hands-on laboratory that incorporates simulation tools and computer-controlled equipment. However, most of the open-source hardware prototyping platforms require programming environments, installation of additional software, and additional plug-in modules that hinders the large-scale deployment of such systems. Therefore, the goal of this project was to create a simple mechatronic system (the “Bi-Copter”) that uses broadly available components along with MATLAB computing environment, in order to demonstrate an experiment that can be adopted at any educational institution with access to MATLAB. The main part of the setup consists of two small dc electric motors attached to each side of the beam with the propellers. By controlling the motors, the angular position of the beam can be changed to a desired one. A circuit board utilizing a breadboard and off-the-shelf plug-in microcontroller connected to a serial-to-USB cable is used to control the motors. Unlike traditional controls experiments which start with a modelling task based on first principles, in this experiment a black-box model auto-regressive model with exogenous input (ARX) is used. Model parameters are obtained from open-loop experiment. The extracted model is then used to design a feedback controller and evaluate its performance. The bicopter system was tested with over 50 students coming from the courses “Design of Mechatronic Systems” and “System Identification” of the academic years 2020–2022. The activity lasts eight weeks including 6 home assignments. During this period students work in groups of two and learn how to program the micro-controllers, carry out the system identificaiton experiments, design and implement feedback controllers. The laboratory allows students to build models of various complexity. To provide laboratory experience to students with various levels of expertise, this lab makes use of the Control Systems and System Identification toolboxes of MATLAB. Both graduate and undergraduate students utilized the apparatus and completed the design tasks. The bi-copter project was tested in a Design of Mechatronic Systems course at the University of Arizona. Since mechanical engineering students typically lack formal training in system identification methods, the course includes a brief introduction of this topic. One of the main outcomes from their experiments is appreciation of the importance of selecting proper input test sequence and the sensitivity of the resulting model to the bandwidth and amplitude of the input test sequence.
