An insider's guide for educators who want to develop a better understanding of children's learning problems. The author presents a unique four-component model that will guide readers to a better of understanding of lack of success in school and what can be done about it. The third component looks at the student's desire to put forth the effort that is needed to be successful. The fourth and last component looks at the organizational skills that the student needs in order to complete his or her assignments in a satisfactory manner. This work will be helpful for educators including classroom teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, school psychologists, school social workers, or graduate students who want to develop a better understanding of children's learning problems. It will also be of use to parents who want to better understand the needs and challenges of educating a child experiencing learning problems in today's schools.

Samuel Mitchell shows how and why businesses, superexperts, and pressure groups are set against volunteers, community leaders, and civic associations as participants with different visions of educational reform. Broad policies are often developed by experts who are frequently entangled in thier own abstractions. As Mitchell suggests, such experts need to be more responsive to communities. Specific alterations have been most often developed by teachers after they have become articulate in expressing their views. However, as Mitchell shows through specific cases, parents, volunteers, and even students are finding ways to make contributions to educational reform. While these people have been dwarfed by the efforts of businesses and governments, which have sought to dominate the reform agenda, Mitchell sees a particular problem with the rise of the superexperts, who have become the coordinators for these impersonal organizations. Innovation that stresses community and family values and that includes volunteers tends to make for the most successful educational reforms. Mitchell shows how the contending sides in reform can be brought together in meaningful alliances. An important resource for educators, those who make educational policy, and the community.

This book argues that despite the greater visibility of transgender people today, their lives as professional teachers and administrators remain enormously difficult. Workplace discrimination against transgender educators continues to run rampant, especially outside of the traditionally liberal enclaves. In fact, if their workplace is a safe haven which it rarely is, many transgender educators lead double lives as professionals during the day and marginalized people outside of their workplace. Even the most liberal communities may provide superficial support while continuing to hold longstanding prejudices as this study demonstrates. As a result, nearly 46% of trans educators remain in the closet, and those that are out must endure more subtle yet determined efforts to isolate them. The author's research shows that 100% of survey respondents indicated they believed they were fired or not promoted because of their gender identity. With the rise of students coming out daily to express their fluctuating gender presentation, the author notes the critical importance of strong and supported transgender teacher role models. Written by a transgender woman, this is a highly engaging and timely study of the lives of transgender educators behind the scenes and how you can be an active ally in the fight against transphobia regardless of your profession.
