Texto completo da fonteOur work is based on the scientific study of three anonymous and previously unpublished antiheretic treaties. The study of this edition has allowed a new light to be thrown on the understanding and construction of the antiheretic discourse. These various treaties do not portray a Cathar heresy constituted as a true religion. They must be taken into consideration as a group of chapters that are as many problems as can be raised about the Catholic dogma – problems not to be looked upon as interdependent but liable to exist for themselves. The treaties have been written by a compiler rather than by an author as their constitution by the organization of authorities classified by themes makes obvious. In so doing, the goal of the compiler was not, though he uses free direct speech in his discourse, to become involved in a controversy with possible heretics but rather to instruct priests who had the cure of souls. The three texts only have commonplaces to offer on each of the various themes, thus conferring a timeless image to the treaties. This may seem surprising at first but becomes clear enough when one considers they were in the first place popularizing works written by scholars and intended for priests looked down upon as ignorant. A crucial theme, that of ecclesiology and sacraments, runs through the three treaties while that of dualism gains both in importance and clarity. At the same time other themes, such as those dealing with priesthood as well as oath and murder, are obviously loosing ground

Texto completo da fonteThe work aims to approach the debates about the representations of space and emotions in literature and to contribute to research on the epistolary novel. The analysis of French and Italian epistolary novels from the 17th to the 20th century, which feature nuns as protagonists, will help to reach that objective. These texts highlight the difference between the inside and the outside of the cloister’s space, which is emphasized by the enclosure. The difference between the inside and the outside cannot be ignored either with regard to questions of emotionality. The letters allow an insight not only into monastic life, but also into the affective life of the nuns. They enable the women to communicate with the world outside the cloister and to express their feelings. The subjective descriptions from the protagonists’ points of view contribute to an emotionally charged representation of their spatial environment. By considering the representation of space and emotions in five different epistolary novels, dating from various centuries, it is possible to get a first idea of the evolution of narrative techniques. For example, passages from rather evocative spatial descriptions to more descriptive representations and from a formulaic communication of emotions to more individual modes of expression can be observed

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis concerns the clinical work of Dr. Bourneville (1840-1909) on hysteria and its instrumentality towards an anticlericalism aim. For eight years he was assistant to Pr. Charcot in the Salpêtrière (1871-1879), then head of the section called “des enfants” in Bicêtre (1879-1905). Désiré-Magloire Bourneville had never ceased identifying the demoniac and divine phenomena to the purest pathological manifestations of the “great neurosis”. Denying at the same time the influence of the devil and of God on the health and the life of humans, he had thus tried, since the years of the “Ordre moral” till the law of Separation of the Church from the State, to throw back religion and religious into a past made of obscurantism and barbarity, so as to better reclaim the foundation of a positive Republic, that is to say, laic and scientific

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis analyzes the means by which the corpus of St. Cyprian’s works, one of the most eminent figure in Latin patristic literature, progressively incorporates a rich collection of spuria – thirty or so – from Antiquity to the XVIth century. This work seeks to provide an accurate description and to elaborate a typology of these texts. The process of the transmission of Cyprian’s writing and internal criticism must be taken into account to evaluate the pseudepigraphs accordings to the genuine corpus. This study emphasizes the importance of a group of writings which survive only because they were copied at a very early stage and became fossilized in the corpus of Cyprian’s works. In the second part of this thesis, we establish a revised text of two spurious treatises – the Ad Vigilium episcopum de Iudaica incredulitate and the De laude martyrii – followed by a traduction and a commentary

Texto completo da fonteIn the 16th century in Europe, religious divisions of christianity erupt in vigorous polemic debates which are fought in literature. The themes of blasphemy, heresy, heterodoxy and deviance become paradigmatic for the political and social changes of the century. In this very special context, a pre-modern idea of tolerance arises in the writings of a few thinkers, like Sebastian Castellio, a former calvinist who veered away from the orthodoxy in Geneva and who took refuge in Basle. The polemical writings of Castellio vanish behind his tranlations of the Bible in latin (1551) and in french (1555), who made of him one of the first critics of the holy scripture. But in the same years, Castellio is violently attacked by the calvinists party for having defended Michael Servetus (1553): a polemic debate on the impunity of heretics breaks out between John Calvinand Sebastian Castellio, who writes his Historia de Morte Serveti and De haereticis / Traité des hérétiques (1554), and other texts which are edited after his death (Contra libellum Calvini) in order to defend his conviction of freedom of conscience. These writings, partly published under pseudonym (Martin Bellius / Georges Kleinberg / Basile Montford) are more then simple answers of circumstance to the texts of Calvin and Théodore de Bèze. They express an idea oftolerance (based on a doctrinal scepticism, as say his adverseries) which is representative for a particular thinking. Recent research has shown that the grammatical, linguistical and logical structure of Castellio's french and latin writings presents a number of original properties. Their analysis can contribute to understand the contemporary mental tools for dealingwith ethical and theological challanges of confesional and doctrinal pluralism. A semantical and lexicological study with a recent texometrical software tool (TXM) allows us to discover new aspects of the history of tolerance, which are revealing for our own century
Texto completo da fonteHopkins’ Oxford Essays and Notes as well as his prose writings are of particular relevance for the understanding of his work at large. Chapter I analyzes Hopkins’ Journals and the restitution of natural phenomena and sensations, as well as the use of inscape and instress in descriptive contexts. Chapter II analyzes Hopkins’ Heracliteanism in the poem That Nature is a Heraclitean Fire and of the Comfort of the Resurrection. Resurrection is a synonym for restitution (or apocatastasis in Greek, explaining our choice of the title). We concentrate on the dynamic description of nature in the Journals and the resonance of the Oxford Essays over the twenty years of Hopkins’ activity as a writer and poet. The third chapter is devoted to the 1868 essay « Parmenides », in which we trace the origins of the key-terms of inscape and instress as translations from the Greek of Parmenides’ Poem. Chaper IV examines the import of these notions in Hopkins’ definitions of poetry, the constitutive dialectics of poetry by analyzing the following topics in the Oxford Essays : poetry, its relation to philosophy, to Plato’s dialectics, to Aristotle’s realism and ethics, the definition of voice, imagination and fancy, as well as the analysis of the links between poetical language, truth and reality. Chapter V concentrates on the analysis of man’s singularity by confronting Hopkins’ early aesthetical theories and his more mature uses of hypostatical and eucharistic theologies, in the light of Duns Scotus’s influence. The relation of poetry, theology and anthropology leads us to examine the key notions of pitch and sake in Hopkins’ poetic definition of man. Chapter VI is devoted to the analysis of Hopkins’ rhythmical imagination and sprung rhythm, the keystone of his thought and practice, in relation to his interpretation of Wordsworthian and Coleridgean aesthetics, metaphysics, dramatic theory, poetics and the Pindaric tradition. To conclude, we focus on the importance of Hopkins, as one of the greatest representatives of poetic thought in the XIXth Century along with Coleridge and Hölderlin, hence his influence in XXth century poetry and poetics
