- This paper examines the conditions under which the two strategic concepts of "multi-functionality" and "food sovereignty" have emerged, refocusing the development narrative toward a politics of sustainability. Both multi-functionality and food sovereignty represent sustainable alternatives to neo-liberal political economy. The author argues about the necessity of a paradigmatic shift regarding the meaning of human development in order to revalue food and agriculture as foundations of civilization, in the epistemological sense, and as vectors both of social and ecological sustainability and of public health.Key words: multi-functionality; food sovereignty; food regime; sustainability; food regime transition.

The paper reviews the management problems in the context of some changes in the role and place of social capital in the processes of socio-economic development. Social capital is positioned as an important resource of modern society as a whole and organizations focused on innovative strategies. It is revealed that social capital is a phenomenon that initially has regulatory and limiting functions, including resource, economic, network, and socio-psychological. It is shown that the specificity of social capital, the imperatives of which form the normative-legislative, administrative-organizational and value-normative determinants of management, and their complementarity ensure the balance of society and/or the activities of various social communities, state institutions, institutions, business companies and other state and/or commercial organizations.

Sustainable development is an integrated approach to tackle ongoing global challenges such as resource depletion, environmental degradation, and climate change. However, a paradigm shift from a fossil-based economy to a bio-based economy must accomplish the circularity principles in order to be sustainable as a solution. The exploration of new feedstock possibilities has potential to unlock the bio-based economy’s true potential, wherein a cascading approach would maximize value creation. Seaweed has distinctive chemical properties, a fast growth rate, and other promising benefits beyond its application as food, making it a suitable candidate to substitute fossil-based products. Economic and environmental aspects can make seaweed a lucrative business; however, seasonal variation, cultivation, harvesting, and product development challenges have yet not been considered. Therefore, a clear forward path is needed to consider all aspects, which would lead to the commercialization of financially viable seaweed-based bioproducts. In this article, seaweed’s capability and probable functionality to aid the bio-based economy are systematically discussed. The possible biorefinery approaches, along with its environmental and economic aspects of sustainability, are also dealt with. Ultimately, the developmental process, by-product promotion, financial assistance, and social acceptance approach are summarized, which is essential when considering seaweed-based products’ feasibility. Besides keeping feedstock and innovative technologies at the center of bio-economy transformation, it is imperative to follow sustainable-led management practices to meet sustainable development goals.

Cycle economy is not only ecologically reasonable but also a chance for new business. Selling utilization instead of selling products is advantageous once additional costs for information processing and logistics are less than costs for underutilized capacity. A competitive provider offers product functionality in quality, time and location as required by the user. Lifetime component monitoring is conditional for this performance. Modern microelectronic technology enables the acquisition of component deterioration with sensorial devices, information processing and storing with microcontrollers and initiating appropriate actions such as maintenance. The architecture of a microsystem called the life cycle unit (LCU) for product and component monitoring is introduced and specified. Product examples illustrate some application areas.

Introduction. The main participants in the transformation processes of the national economy are representatives of government, community and business. Producers and providers of economic products and services act on the business side, and consumers of economic goods and services act on the community side. The government expresses its complicity in the formation of mechanisms of transformational processes of the national economy in the form of normative-legislative and social-regulatory influence on the formation of economic phenomena and processes. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the drivers of economic transformations in ensuring the design functionality of the strategic development of the national economy .. Methods (methodology). The general scientific methods, in particular theoretical generalization - for generalization of drivers of economic transformations in maintenance of functionality of design are applied in research; system economic analysis - to substantiate the model of influence of economic drivers on transformation processes in the context of design management. Results. According to the results of the research, the types of economic activity and economic processes that are the main drivers of national economy development are identified, which are proposed to be divided into two groups depending on strategic objectives, namely: drivers of economic growth and drivers of economic transformations. Drivers of economic growth are industries and types of economic activity, the growth of which stimulates economic growth in other sectors of the economy and directly affects the corresponding GDP growth. At the current stage of development, the main drivers of growth of the national economy are: the development of transport and logistics infrastructure, the information and communications sector and agriculture.

Eco-friendly systems are necessitated nowadays, as the global consumption is increasing. A data-driven aspect is prominent, involving the Internet of Things (IoT) as the main enabler of a Circular Economy (CE). Henceforth, IoT equipment records the system’s functionality, with machine learning (ML) optimizing green computing operations. Entities exchange and reuse CE assets. Transparency is vital as the beneficiaries must track the assets’ history. This article proposes a framework where blockchaining administrates the cooperative vision of CE-IoT. For the core operation, the blockchain ledger records the changes in the assets’ states via smart contracts that implement the CE business logic and are lightweight, complying with the IoT requirements. Moreover, a federated learning approach is proposed, where computationally intensive ML tasks are distributed via a second contract type. Thus, “green-miners” devote their resources not only for making money, but also for optimizing operations of real-systems, which results in actual resource savings.

Abstract Over time, the market economy has undergone many changes caused by the processes underlying its operation, and have focused on the scarcity of resources, interdependencies between economic agents, intensified exchanges, technical and scientific progress and computerization of economic systems. Given the many variables that act and ensure the functionality of the contemporary market economy, it is particularly important that the interdependencies between them be addressed in terms of sustainability. This paper addresses sustainability as a condition for supporting sustainable economic development, starting from the main links that support economic growth, namely production and consumption. Sustainable economic growth must be accompanied by measures to optimize the processes that characterize production and consumption, aiming at reducing resource waste, maximizing the intrinsic value of waste from economic activity and ensuring an infrastructure that makes it possible to move from the linear economy to the circular economy. Starting from the current stage of the steps taken to ensure sustainable economic development, the paper presents the main challenges faced by supply and demand, representing shortcomings in ensuring the road to circularity.

The paper aims to present a new methodology to evaluate the quality of features and functionality of learning object repositories (LORs). The quality of features and functionality of LORs is analysed in terms of engaging LOR users and content producers. Thus, it can be referred to as quality-in-use of LORs. This methodology consists of creation and consequent application of methods and the model for the quality-in-use of LORs. The model of the quality-in-use of LORs is presented in this paper. The methodology for evaluating the quality-in-use of LORs is based on the general MCEQLS (Multiple Criteria Evaluation of the Quality of Learning Software) approach to evaluate the quality of learning software. The essential part of the novel methodology is the application of improved Fuzzy AHP method to establish criteria weights of the quality-in-use of LORs. It is shown that the created methodology is suitable and stable for evaluating the quality of LOR features and its functionality. A more detail presentation is given on the results of the expert evaluation of the quality-in-use of three LORs that are most popular in Lithuania against the proposed methodology. The novelty of the presented research is achieved through the innovative instrument consisting of the model of the quality-in-use of LORs and the Fuzzy AHP method. The presented methodology could serve as a technological tool for decision making in education as well as in different areas of economy.

Zimbabwe’s public hospitals have been in a declining mode for three consecutive decades marred by economic hardships rooted in the deteriorating governance structures and systems at a provincial and national level. The decline is purported to weaken the strategies that enhance the functionality of board management (Gilson & Agyepong, 2018). Efforts by the government to introduce effective strategies to revamp and enhance the functionality of public hospital boards have been in vain (Moyo, 2016; Sikipa, Osifo-Dawodu, Kokwaro, & Rice, 2019). The aim of the study is to explore strategies for enhancing the functionality of hospital management boards (HMBs) in central hospitals of Zimbabwe using a survey in order to improve performance, and service delivery overall. The study employed a qualitative research design gathering data by interviewing 12 respondents as the sample for the study selected from a target population of 66 hospital chief executive officers (CEOs) and board chairs. The 12 respondents were selected using the purposive sampling technique based on experience and knowledge as the inclusion and exclusion criteria of participants. The study revealed 6 critical strategies as gaps that hospitals need to enhance to improve on performance. These include networking, monitoring and evaluation, revenue generation, public-private partnerships (PPPs), HMB operational plan, and transparency in the selection and appointment of board members. The gaps identified required policy review to strengthen the appointment and performance of HMBs.

The goal is to provide a conceptual framework for a gradual transition to a circular economy through the analysis of authoritative literature sources. Methods are based on the principles of system-structural analysis, scientific analysis and synthesis, and logical explanation and description of the problem are also presented. For various solutions, appropriate qualitative and quantitative research methods were used: analytical, synthetic, logical, etc. Outcomes – the ways to increase resource efficiency by minimizing the use of primary natural resources (e.g. water, electricity), reducing pollution by synthetic fertilizers, and maximizing the use of biomaterials (e.g. agricultural waste) and treated wastewater, thus contributing to a smooth transition to the closed cycle economy in agricultural industry are presented. Taking into account the importance of the circular economy, the importance of supporting this concept at the State level should be noted. Conclusions – the recycling of agricultural waste in the future will provide a number of benefits in economic, environmental and social aspects. The State should invest capital in the development of a circular economy, since in the long-term perspective the actual benefits of this transition will increase significantly. It is important to research not only the efficiency and functionality of the circular economy, but also to conduct the research and implement innovations that contribute to the functioning of this system.

Business models for circular economy keep products alive and operating for as long as possible during their use and consumption. Business model (BM) innovation in the circular economy (CE) helps firms design their BMs based on CE principles and identify new value-creation opportunities. Since research on the design of circular business models (CBM) is at an early stage, there is a lack of unified terminologies, and the meanings and relationships between the various CBM archetypes are unclear. This study aims to review and analyze existing emerging BMs in CE from peer-reviewed journals and recommend future research directions. The systematic review of 76 research articles resulted in identifying 23 CBM archetypes. This study analyzes the CBM archetypes based on descriptions, examples, similarities in the terminologies, and the frequency of use in the literature. The review identifies the three widely adopted CBM classification frameworks, the ReSOLVE framework (Ellen MacArthur Foundation), Accenture’s CBM framework, and the CBM strategies by Bocken et al. Most of the studies in this review combine BMs derived from several classification approaches to categorize suitable BM archetypes for the CE, which illustrates the lack of comprehensive classifications. The key findings show that providing access to a product’s functionality, recycling materials that would otherwise be sent to landfills, and restoring the functionality of existing products (re-manufacturing/refurbishing) are the most discussed archetypes in CBM literature, and other types do not get adequate attention. Future studies should examine BMs that have not received enough attention and provide a comprehensive classification of CBMs that clarifies their meaning and relationships. With this study, we contribute to advancing the body of knowledge in CBM and help practitioners in developing new CBMs.

The paper aims at discussing the issue of governance in respect to creative scenes, a central structural element of the creative economy, exemplifying the case of Berlin. Berlin has a fast growing creative industry that has become the object of the city’s development policies and place marketing. The core question is: What are the spatial-organizational driving forces of creativity in Berlin - can they be steered by public administration? I am using Berlin as a reference case to articulate the gap between ’stateled planning’ on the one hand and the organisational practices of self-governed creative scenes on the other. I attempt to demonstrate why a perspective change in terms of re-scaling is necessary, in order to respond to the particular practices of emerging industries and their societal form ’scenes’. By re-scaling I mean the conceptualization of governance in different nonhierarchical organisational as well as spatial scales, based on the observation that scenes are considered to be a central element of the functionality of creative industries.

The current paper explains the fundamental concepts of CM theory (Cycle of Money Theory or otherwise known as Cycle Money Theory). The theory of the Money Cycle examines an economy as a whole, therefore the structure of the economy and the distribution of money in the economy is evaluated in terms of how they interact. An economy with a high index of the money cycle indicates prosperity. The current paper demonstrates that tax evasion causes a delay in tax revenue. Tax evasion, on the other hand, has caused economic harm to the economy because money is stored for tax havens rather than the local banking system. Inflation is the economic disease of the inadequate structure of the economy, because of the not appropriate distribution and reuse of money. Functionality (economic activity) and structure of the economy are connected through the way that money moves in an economy or is lost from it. The currency rate in this paper is analyzed based on the theory of the Cycle of Money.

Concerns regarding the overconsumption of natural resources has provoked the recovery of biopolymers from food processing biomass. Furthermore, the current market opportunity for pectin in other areas has increased, necessitating the search for alternative pectin resources. This is also a step towards the sustainable and circular green economy. Mango peel is the byproduct of agro-processing and has been used for high value-added components such as polysaccharide biopolymers. Pectin derived from the peel is yet to be exploited to its greatest extent, particularly in terms of its separation and physiochemical properties, which limit its applicability to dietary fiber in culinary applications. The functionality of the mango peel pectin (MPP) strongly depends on the molecular size and degree of esterification which highlight the importance of isolation and characterisation of pectin from this novel resource. This article therefore provides a useful overview of mango peel as a potential biomaterial for the recovery of MPP. Different extraction techniques and the integrated recovery were also discussed. The utilisation of MPP in different industrial schemes are also detailed out from different perspectives such as the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. This review convincingly expresses the significance of MPP, providing a sustainable opportunity for food and pharmaceutical development.

Abstract A banking system is functional when it expands the potential to provide more liquidity to the economy, especially for development finance. The advances of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can contribute to increasing banks’ potential to offer more products and services, expanding their capacity to be more functional. Diversifying financial instruments can encourage them to operate with more profitable operations in the short term to the detriment of the supply of credit in the long term, decreasing their ability to be more functional. This article aims to analyze the relationship between ICT and the functionality of Brazilian banks between 1995 and 2016. We created an index of functionality. The Panel Data estimation verified an ambiguous impact of ICT on banks’ functionality. The use of electronic devices and services for software-driven data processing and transmission has had a positive effect on this index. However, the influence of ICT on functionality was to enhance the negative effects of financial innovations on the supply of credit by banks because of the agents” incentives to invest in short-term and more liquid assets, vis à vis of financing long-term investments, harming the capacity for financing Brazilian development.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the current state of the research and the trends in the field of Circular Economy (CE) for the automotive industry, with electric vehicles (EVs) and conventional vehicles (CVs), being analyzed separately. A systematic literature search was conducted using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) method, to screen and select articles from the Clarivate Web of Science database. For the detailed analysis, the information from the selected articles was structured based on such criteria as study objective, findings, limitations, and research proposals, and was further organized into nine categories for EVs, and into four categories for CVs. There were several CE strategies identified in the review, but a major challenge remains the evaluation of these strategies, in order to determine the most relevant, effective, and efficient ones, starting from the goal of minimizing the resource functionality loss. Future studies should focus on promoting new green technologies in the automotive industry, with an emphasis on circularity, in terms of raw materials, energy, production systems, product life extension, second use application, reuse, recycling, and end of life.

Today, the circular economy is regarded as a promising alternative for modern economies to preserve “virgin” natural resources for future generations by valorizing waste materials. The concept is also used to promote the goals of sustainable development, where, apart from the environmental dimension, the economic and social dimensions are also integrated. So far, the largest part of the related research has emphasized the environmental and economic dimensions, while little attention has been paid to the social dimension of circular economy. Thus, this paper develops a framework to evaluate the social impacts of circular products and materials throughout their life cycle, which is based on social life thinking, circular economy principles and strategies and social responsibility principles. Moreover, computational examples are presented to show the functionality and applicability of the proposed framework. Finally, critical points for future research are pinpointed in order to assist scholars in applying and improving such frameworks through case studies, helping them to better understand the social aspects of circular economy.

The use of simulation models is essential when exploring transitions to low-carbon futures and climate change mitigation and adaptation policies. There are many models developed to understand socio-environmental processes and interactions, and analyze alternative scenarios, but hardly one single model can serve all the needs. There is much expectation in climate-energy research that constructing new purposeful models out of existing models used as building blocks can meet particular needs of research and policy analysis. Integration of existing models, however, implies sophisticated coordination of inputs and outputs across different scales, definitions, data and software. This paper presents an online integration platform which links various independent models to enhance their scope and functionality. We illustrate the functionality of this web platform using several simulation models developed as standalone tools for analyzing energy, climate and economy dynamics. The models differ in levels of complexity, assumptions, modeling paradigms and programming languages, and operate at different temporal and spatial scales, from individual to global. To illustrate the integration process and the internal details of our integration framework we link an Integrated Assessment Model (GCAM), a Computable General Equilibrium model (EXIOMOD), and an Agent Based Model (BENCH). This toolkit is generic for similar integrated modeling studies. It still requires extensive pre-integration assessment to identify the ‘appropriate’ models and links between them. After that, using the web service approach we can streamline module coupling, enabling interoperability between different systems and providing open access to information for a wider community of users.

Though better known in the Anglophone world as the guru of postmodern “hyperreality”, the French philosopher and radical sociologist Jean Baudrillard devoted a great deal of attention to theorizing design. This paper singles out the moment—inspired by a conference he attended in 1972 in New York at MoMA—where he advances the argument that contemporary design, understood as articulating and incorporating the entirety of the artificial environment, is a direct manifestation of the most significant development in political economy since the industrial revolution—what Baudrillard calls the “political economy of the sign.” According to Baudrillard the origin of this expanded sense of design is the Bauhaus. That school sought to extend the role and mission of design to all fabricated phenomena, in the process collapsing any distinction between objects (and environments), turning them all into a fusion of art and technology, aesthetics and functionality. In explicating Baudrillard's argument, this paper also traces the missing presence of design in traditional political economy, arguing that Baudrillard was one of the first authors, albeit critically, to identify the now essential role of design in postindustrial capitalism.

The scientific article explores the role of software as a tool used by organizations to carry out economic activities in a digital economy without which it is impossible to have adequate competitiveness in a digital economy. The concept of “digital economy” has been clarified. A methodology has been developed to evaluate the effectiveness of the software used or selected on the basis of its qualitative and quantitative characteristics and the requirements of the workplace for the software functionality. Based on the theoretical and methodological base and the developed methodology, a scalable model of an effective management decision-making process for selecting and updating software in an organization is built, a comparison with existing practice is carried out. The significance of the research results is due to the lack of widely available methods in open access for the optimal selection of software as a tool, not related to involving external agents in the process and having the necessary scalability to use them, including collective, in organizations. This creates negative effects for organizations and the economy of the Republic of Belarus as a whole.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to apply the theory of cycle of money in the case of Greece. Prior works have determined the economic characteristics of the case of Latvia, Serbia, and Bulgaria, according to the concept of the theory of cycle of money. The index of the cycle of money suggests how an economic system should counteract a monetary and fiscal crisis and studies how well-structured is Greece’s economy. The estimations of the index of the cycle of money of Greece are compared with the global average index of the cycle of money. The results reveal that Greece is above the average global value. Then, Greece’s results reveal that it is a well-structured economy and can face an economic crisis. The current work is important as represents the strength of Greece’s economy with emphasis to the period of 2012 - 2017, of financial and economic crisis. The theory of the cycle of money covers the gap that exists for the structure and functionality of the economy, which formed on the derivative of GDP, giving the cycle of money. Moreover, it is the only theory that enhances the economy, without any negative effect of the fiscal or the monetary policy, as uses the same amount of money of an economy appropriately.

Within the framework of a circular economy, we aim to efficiently use raw materials and reduce waste generation. In this context, the longevity of biomimetic material systems can significantly contribute by providing robustness and resilience of system functionality inspired by biological models. The aim of this review is to outline various principles that can lead to an increase in robustness (e.g., safety factor, gradients, reactions to environmental changes) and resilience (e.g., redundancy, self-repair) and to illustrate the principles with meaningful examples. The study focuses on plant material systems with a high potential for transfer to biomimetic applications and on existing biomimetic material systems. Our fundamental concept is based on the functionality of the entire system as a function of time. We use functionality as a dimensionless measure of robustness and resilience to quantify the system function, allowing comparison within biological material systems and biomimetic material systems, but also between them. Together with the enclosed glossary of key terms, the review provides a comprehensive toolbox for interdisciplinary teams. Thus, allowing teams to communicate unambiguously and to draw inspiration from plant models when developing biomimetic material systems with great longevity potential.

Resumo:
Under modern economic conditions, the trend towards automation and modernization of systems is growing rapidly. This also applies to accounting, as all businesses need to automate this process. Currently, the owners of enterprises, institutions, organizations are in demand for qualified professionals in the field of accounting, analysis, control and taxation. The profession of accountant is always in demand in the labor market. It has undergone significant changes, with the transition to a market economy, which gave impetus to the development of new technologies that have been introduced into accounting. One of the main elements of the accounting system is the information component of two subsystems – management and financial accounting. There is also a reorientation from the control function to the informative, based on the systematization of points of digital transformation of the organization. The digital economy is a type of economy where the key factors and means of production are digital data (binary, information, etc.) and network transactions, as well as their use as a resource that can significantly increase the efficiency and productivity and cost of products and services. The relevance of research in this area is also due to the fact that accounting risks losing its position as the main provider of financial information, due to the “dissolution” in the technical and multifunctional electronic information environment. In addition, problems with reduced accounting functionality have arisen in recent decades due to conservatism and its retroactive focus on information, specific methods and product formats, significant constraints and rules, dominance of the process over results and lack of information value for stakeholders, leading to a number of basic research aimed at reviewing the importance of the process of forming an information environment and finding ways to improve the organization of accounting. The main direction of accounting and control and analytical work of the enterprise is to inform users about the availability and condition of assets, as their acquisition is associated with investment. Collecting data on the availability, condition and movement of assets is a thorough process. Typically, this procedure is performed in different departments of the entity within the specified powers, so it complicates the process of summarizing data obtained from different sources.
