Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop an approach to measuring the performance of motor vehicle manufacturers (MVMs) from economic and environmental (E&E) perspectives. Design/methodology/approach Eight measures are identified for benchmarking the performance from E&E perspectives. A new company performance index IMVM is constructed to quantitatively generate the historical data of MVMs’ company performance. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models are built to generate the forecast data of the IMVM. The minimum Akaike information criteria value is used to identify the model of the best fit. Forecast accuracy of the ARIMA models is tested by the mean absolute percentage error. Findings The construction of the index IMVM is benchmarked against three frameworks by six benchmark metrics. The IMVM satisfies all of its applicable metrics while the three frameworks are incapable to satisfy their applicable metrics. Out of 15, 4 MVMs are excluded for benchmarking future performance due to their non-stationary time series data. Based on the forecast IMVM data, GM is the best performer among the 15 samples in the FY2018. Originality/value This research highlights the environmental perspective during vehicles’ production. The development of this approach is based on publicly available data and transparent about the methods it used. The data out of the approach can benefit stakeholders with insights by benchmarking the historical performance of MVMs as well as their future performance.

Challenges arising from the continuous population growth, expansion of urbanized areas, the aggravating environmental performance, the shrinking deposits of fossil energy sources and inability to fully replace them by renewable ones, the growing air emissions of hazardous substances of anthropogenic origin have acquired a global dimension, which raises the importance of studies focused on various issues of environmental-economic management of urbanized areas. The article’s objective is to substantiate the need for implementation of environmental-economic management in urbanized areas in order to prevent the impact of emissions of hazardous substances on the condition of ambient air. The need to change the anthropocentric paradigm dominating economic management for a long time for the ecocentric paradigm is emphasized. The environmental policy goals pertaining to the protection of ambient air in the countries covered by the resolutions of the World Health Organization (WHO), and the environmental policy principles in EU countries laid as the basis of air quality targets and standards are outlined and discussed. An extensive review covers the main sources of air pollution and measures to reduce emissions of hazardous substances contained in WHO recommendations on air quality and other normative documents, with special emphasis on the data provided by the European Environment Agency. A nomenclature of management decisions on air quality, elaborated on ecocentric foundations, is given.

Sustainable development with three main pillars, namely environmental, economic, and social, is the concept of country’s development to achieve inclusive economic growth, good environmental quality, and improvement of people's welfare. However, the dominance of economic factors cause various environmental problem. This phenomenon occurs in most of developing countries, including in Indonesia. The relationship between economic activity and environmental quality has been widely discussed and empirically tested by scholars. This descriptive research analysed the hypothesis called Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) from a perspective of sustainable development in Indonesia. EKC hypothesis illustrates the relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation forming an inverted U-curve, indicating that at the beginning of development, environmental quality will decrease along with increasing economic growth, and then reached a certain point the environmental quality will gradually improve. In this paper will be discussed how the relationship between environmental quality and economic growth in Indonesia was investigated. The preliminary results show that most of the empirical studies use the conventional approach, in which the CO2 emission used as the proxy of environmental degradation. The existence of inverted U-curve is also inconclusive. Therefore, the extension research on the relationship between economic growth and environmental quality in Indonesia using the EKC hypothesis is required.

How can we design conservation and development projects that produce lasting changes? How can we increase their effectiveness and legitimacy? The classical economic incentives of environmental policies (certification, sustainable forest management, payments for environmental services, green loans, etc.) are effective in the short term, but their environmental performance is not necessarily guaranteed in the long term. However, when the intrinsic motivations of beneficiaries are activated, these beneficiaries take greater ownership of the objectives of actions: they demonstrate more lasting behavioural change. Recent research combining behavioural economics and social psychology, conducted for such projects, is opening a rich and complementary avenue to mobilise this latent human potential. Considering intrinsic motivations implies recognising the importance of the psychological dimension of any action. Research and development decision-makers and donors can and ensure their calls for projects incorporate methods to identify and activate these motivations.

Abstract The environmental dimension and sustainability-related issues have increasingly gained momentum in Economic Geography. This paper argues that integrating the inequality perspective into Environmental Economic Geography (EEG) and trying to disentangle the manifold interrelationships between economic, social, and environmental disadvantage could be worthwhile efforts. Based on three case studies – the debate on urban environmental justice in German cities, the spread of alternative food systems and food-sharing initiatives in Germany, and the socially selective migration in hazard prone areas in rural coastal Bangladesh – we demonstrate that aspects of social inequality indeed matter for EEG thinking.

Green economic development has become an essential pathway to achieving high-quality economic growth, while digital finance represents a prominent trend in global financial advancement. The rapid expansion of digital finance in China has spurred extensive research in this domain. This study systematically combes the literature on digital finance and green economic development. Initially, it delineates the conceptual definition of digital finance, measurement indices and the conceptual definition of green economic development, identifies the key influencing factors. Subsequently, it synthesizes empirical findings on how digital finance influences the growth of green economy from economic, environmental, and energy perspectives. The economic perspective is divided into macroeconomic impacts, mechanisms of influence, and microeconomic aspects; the environmental perspective focuses on the pollution effects and carbon emission reduction attributable to digital finance, and the energy perspective reviews literature on improvements in energy efficiency and reductions in energy intensity driven by digital finance. Finally, the paper offers a comprehensive summary of current research trends and future directions in the field. It emphasizes the need for enhanced digital finance index systems, robust risk control and regulation, and a balanced approach to fostering a genuine green economy. Additionally, it highlights potential future research avenues, such as the effects of digital finance on government policies, foreign trade, environmental pollution, and energy utilization.

Common wheat, a fundamental commodity on international markets, is increasingly differentiated into commercial types on domestic markets to meet the demand of processing companies. Improver wheat, biscuit wheat, ordinary and superior bread-making wheat are commercial varieties with specific technological characteristics. Wheat farming systems are constantly evolving, and as a result, related environmental issues emerge. We applied an LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) analysis, where the functional unit was 1 tonne of grain for each typology and system boundaries were from cradle to farm gate. Primary data were used in the study, and special attention was paid to fertiliser use. From an LCA perspective, our findings show that nitrogen (N) plays an essential role in plant production although producing different waterborne and airborne emissions and nitrate leaching, for the 4 commercial typologies studied. Furthermore, the impact can be differentiated based on the technological features of the commercial types. Our results led us to observe that the four wheat types show contrasting economic and environmental performances.

This researchoutlines how macroeconomic policies and actions can contribute to environmental sustainability while achieving stable economic growth. The problem is that uncontrolled economic growth and lack of attention to the environment have resulted in significant negative impacts, such as climate change and ecosystem degradation. The aim of this research is to explore the integration of environmental factors in development strategies and economic growth. This research method involves literature analysis, environmental impact assessment, and tracking sustainable macroeconomic policies. The research results show that environmental integration in macroeconomics is the key to achieving sustainable economic growth. This involves the use of strict environmental regulations, development of sustainable economic sectors, investment in technological innovation, and cooperation with the private sector. In conclusion, the integration of the environment in development strategies and economic growth brings economic and environmental benefits. In facing ongoing macroeconomic challenges, balanced policies between economic and environmental interests are needed to achieve sustainable development goals.

Inputs, including herbicides, used in crop production may create negative environmental impacts. One solution to minimize these adverse effects is the adoption of integrated weed management (IWM) with the intention of reducing herbicide use. This study, conducted in 2010, estimates the willingness of farmers to pay for the adoption of more effective weed management methods. Results suggest that the willingness to pay (WTP) for IWM is greater than the WTP for other weed management methods, including chemical weed management and chemical and mechanical weed management. This study also identified a number of factors that influence the adoption of IWM on wheat farms in Iran using a multinomial logit model. Total annual income, area under irrigated wheat, wheat yield loss due to weeds, perennial nature of the weeds, and having awareness of weed resistance to herbicides had a positive effect on the adoption of IWM practices. However, having rain-fed (dryland) wheat cultivation and a larger number of plots on the farm had a negative influence on the choice of IWM.

Through the analysis of legal texts and official documents on the environmental refuge, it is observed that these diplomas approach the refuge only under its primitive concept, established in the Convention on the Status of Refugees, without major innovations. Moreover, the environmental refuge does not appear in legal instruments. In situations where the environment is identified as a driving factor for migration, the economic context of the affected regions is a decisive and essential element of displacement. Therefore, the research in question aims at discussing the economic context of environmental refuge, based on the cyclical phenomenon of drought in northeastern Brazil and environmental disasters in the cities of Mariana and Brumadinho. The discussion on political and social issues that enhance the damage to the environment should receive special attention in the refuge's agenda, in order to corroborate the connection between economic vulnerability and environmental refuge.

Environmental consultants are in a unique position to address the practical aspects of a working definition of “adverse environmental impact” (AEI) within Section 316(b) of the Clean Water Act. In our work with the electric utility industry, attorneys, and regulatory agencies, we have encountered numerous and sometimes conflicting interpretations as to what constitutes AEI. In our over 30 years of experience, we have applied most of the approaches suggested for addressing this issue, including biostatistical methods, trend analysis, time series methods, conditional mortality rate models, stock-recruitment models, equivalent adult models, and ecosystem models. In our experience, the paradigm most helpful in bringing about agreement among stakeholders is to (1) create a model of operating scenarios, (2) use empirical data from on-site studies to parameterize the model, (3) convert losses by life stage to equivalent adult losses, (4) convert equivalent adult losses to economic value, and (5) compare scenarios on an economic basis.

The development and preservation of the environment is a delamatic problem, as if there is some kind of complication between the objectives of development and the objectives of environmental preservation. This is because often factors (environmental kelastarian) are ignored / ignored in order to put forward the issue of national development which has more tangible benefits for the community. In order to overcome this problem, a sustainable and environmentally sound development agenda is needed, namely efforts to harmonize economic, social and environmental development. In economic, social and environmental development, Muslims have a strategic role because in Islam it has been regulated in the Quran, in Q. S 16:97, QS 2: 29, QS 6: 95, Q. S 6: 95, Q S 10: 6, QS 16,66,67,68 and Q; 27.28. In the use of natural resources, we must pay attention to ecological elements, care for nature and not cause damage to the earth. This is in line with the concept of sustainable development. Muslims must participate in spreading environmental values and practice them through various professions or positions that are carried by Islamic teachings. Meanwhile, to face global challenges, Muslims must learn science and technology, stop excessive environmental exploitation and the industrial world plays a role in overcoming environmental damage.

The economic dimension is one of the central perspectives in both sustainable development and education for sustainable development. The role of the economy in sustainable development has been discussed extensively over the years and different views exist about how economic activities affect other sustainability dimensions. How young people view the relationships among economic perspectives and sustainable development seems to be an underemphasized perspective in sustainability education and underexplored in the field of sustainability education research. This study uses cluster analysis, which is an explorative approach, to identify and analyze young peoples’ views of the relationships between economic growth, economic development and sustainable development. Six hundred and thirty eight students (age 18–19) from 15 schools across Sweden responded to a questionnaire probing (1) views on these relationships, and (2) their environmental consciousness. Four clusters of students differing in their views on the economy in sustainable development were identified in the analysis: un-differentiating positive, nuanced ambivalent, two-way convinced, and critical. Further analysis indicated that some groups differed in their perception of the environmental dimension of sustainable development. Implications of these findings are discussed from the perspective of education for sustainable development.

This study examines the extent and nature of social, economic, and environmental reporting practices of Bangladeshi-listed banks. Using content analysis technique, Information was gathered from the available annual reports of 25 banks from 2014 to 2019. Findings revealed that overall reporting of environmental information has increased by 47% from 2014 to 2019, whereas overall social reporting has increased by 30% from 2014 to 2019. Again, we tried to explore sustainability reporting practices of these banks considering 26 categories too, where the first 12 categories are used to identify environmental accounting and reporting practices and the rest 14 for social and economic reporting. The findings of 26 categories of sustainability reporting reflect that social, economic, and environmental reporting has increased greatly by 74.90% in 2019. Most of the banks disclosed mostly about energy consumption (D6) from environmental reporting while economic social (D16), education, and training (D18), health and safety (D19) and culture (D20) from social perspectives and least about activities undertaken for tree plantation (D3) from an environmental perspective. This study has great implications for the policymakers of the corporate sector and government.

Without addressing environmental degradation and the social and economic inequities of the future, poverty reduction today cannot be accomplished or sustained. This is especially true when it comes to gender-based discrepancies in how the environment is used. Inherent societal gender inequality is a violation of human rights and a major concern for sustainable development. A thorough understanding of how men and women relate to the natural environment and environmental resources, as well as their rights and roles in resource planning and management, is required for social equity in society, gender-sensitive economic strategies, and environmental protection, according to discussions on equity and sustainable development in this paper. This understanding can be attained through environmental education programmes.

AbstractIn the past several years, researchers, educators, policymakers, and activists have initiated sustainable agriculture programs and efforts the world over. This development has sometimes been accompanied by a sense that it is time to stop discussing sustainability at a conceptual level and get on with the work of making agriculture sustainable. Our perspective is that it is critical to pursue a comprehensive definition of sustainability in order to set sustainable agriculture priorities and ensure that sustainable agriculture takes a path that does not reproduce problems of conventional agriculture. In this paper we briefly review some popular definitions of sustainable agriculture and find that their focus is primarily on farm-level resource conservation and profitability as the main components of sustainability. Others have challenged this approach for either not examining the social aspects of sustainability or for containing an implicit assumption that working on the environmental, production, and microeconomic aspects of sustainability will automatically take care of its social aspects. We propose an expanded conceptualization of sustainability—one that focuses on the entire food and agriculture system at a global level and includes not only environmental soundness and economic viability, but social equity as well. In this perspective, issues such as poverty and hunger are as central to achieving agricultural sustainability as those of soil erosion and adequate farm returns.

It has been man's excessive use of natural resources for industrial raw materials, his misuse of the environment as a place to discard waste and unwanted materials, and the high rates of consumption of commercially valued resources that is causing serious local and global consequences. Many of our environmental problems are the result of exceeding the constraints imposed by this inherent finiteness of the environment. Now and in the future, local and global decisions will have to be made which recognize that environmental resources are finite and that the assimilative capacity of the ecosystem is limited. In addition to providing estuarine managers with a conceptual understanding of environmental problems, economics has provided decision makers with practical analyses of potential solutions. This paper provides an overview of these issues. The basis of the historic relationship between environmental impacts and man's activities is presented followed by a discussion of how future problems can be prevented. Some examples of the contribution of economic research is also presented.

The high-quality development of regional economic system is inseparable from the collective efforts of multiple economic sectors. Increasing attention has been paid to the environmental performance evaluation of different administrative levels or economic sectors, but integrated research is scarce. Taking the three industries (the primary, secondary and tertiary industries) into account, this paper proposes a data envelopment analysis (DEA) model with parallel network structure to assess the environmental performance of 30 provinces in China from integrative perspective of efficiency and productivity. Then, the Tobit model is adopted to investigate the effects of external factors on the environmental performance. The results show that environmental efficiency of Chinese economy is only 0.4436 during 2010–2019 and the performance of the secondary industry is the highest, followed by the tertiary and the primary industries. Moreover, the environmental efficiency of eastern region is far higher than that of the central or western regions. Technological progress is the main driver of environmental productivity improvement for China’s economic system. Most of the external factors such as energy structure and technology innovation, have different effects on the environmental performance of different regions. Finally, several targeted policy implications are suggested for improving the environmental performance of China’s economic system.

The economic contributions from commercial forestry, measured in trade terms, employment and regional development, are well established. Less understood is the environmental contribution of forestry, provided that forestry is practised in a sustainable manner. Despite the economic and environmental benefits, the social license for commercial forestry is increasingly challenged in terms of access to timber and the conditions placed on access, and in access to major export markets for forest products. Fundamental to addressing these challenges is the utilization of harvesting regimes acceptable to both resource owners and consumers. Clearcut harvesting may be a scientifically reasonable replication of natural disturbance, allowing adequate provision for forest character and structure, but it is the emotional impact of the harvest site that often determines public acceptability. The institutional setting for commercial forestry is evolving rapidly and is increasingly driven by non-governmental groups that are proving particularly adept with information age tools. This paper will examine the supply and demand factors that are producing the pressure on harvesting practices, the institutional response to these pressures, the physical and financial implications of partial-cut harvesting, and will examine the harvesting norms that have emerged in a number of key softwood producing regions. Key words: clearcutting, partial-cut harvesting, forest management, forest policy, marketing

Abstract The present paper has as main objective to examine the literature and show the literature review, debates and discussions related to migration and implication of economic development. Media and academic circles are strongly attracted by the topic of migration and its consequences. Aspects brought into attention, from migration and economic development point of view are: climate change, social, economic, political and legislative. The reality is pushing us to research this phenomenon because migration effects are already visible and important for European communities, both for origin and destination countries. It comes questions that point to the core of economic, social, politic and environmental developments of the 21st century and these are referring to environmental and climate justice, as well as existing and growing of the relationships between the involved parties. This paper presents also the literature review analysis of different framings, points of view and lines of argument, and highlighting debates about securitization of climate change, depending on economic and connections to development studies and adaptation research and their influence on migration decision. Migration decision dependents on many factors, such as: level of life, education, employment opportunities, gender and age, familial needs and financial possibilities, but climate change, too. Also, the present paper will point out scientific papers that address the new challenges influencing labour migration inside European Union such as: COVID-19 pandemic, environmental changes, besides social inequalities and regional conflicts which are now at the borders of the European space.

The rising level of environmental pollution in China indicates that the current pattern of economic development is unsustainable. Therefore, ensuring environmental quality places higher requirements on China’s economic development pattern from the perspective of sustainability. At the same time, the rapid growth of China’s total trade is an important driving force for China’s rapid economic development. Based on the trade and environmental quality data of China’s 30 provincial administrative divisions, this paper uses a Dynamic Spatial Durbin Model to analyze the environmental quality effects of trade—that is, the composition, technical, and scale effect. Moreover, the environmental quality effects of trade are compared and analyzed in different regions. In this paper, the wastewater discharge and sulfur dioxide discharge are selected as the indicators of environmental pollution. The results show that the scale effect of trade is significantly negative, and that the scale effect is greater than the composition effect. Trade development is conducive to reducing regional environmental pollution. The main impact of trade development on reducing environmental pollution is through economies of scale. The composition effect and technology effect are smaller than the scale effect. The increase in trade in services has helped to reduce the growth rate of pollution emissions. Therefore, expanding service trade and optimizing the trade structure will help to reduce the intensity of pollutive emissions and thereby improve the sustainability of regional economic development.
