Eco-design is a crucial approach in achieving sustainable manufacturing, which seeks to reduce the environmental impact of products and processes throughout their lifecycle. This paper explores the principles and tools that are used in eco-design, providing an overview of the key concepts and methods for sustainable manufacturing. The principles of eco-design are centered on minimizing the environmental impact of products and processes through the use of renewable resources, reducing waste and emissions, and improving energy and material efficiency. The paper discusses these principles in detail and highlights the benefits that can be achieved by implementing eco-design in manufacturing. The tools and methods of eco-design include life cycle assessment (LCA), design for environment (DfE), and environmental management systems (EMS) whereas DfE involves designing products and processes to minimize their environmental impact. EMS provides a framework for managing environmental performance across an organization. The paper also discusses the challenges of implementing eco-design in manufacturing, including the need for collaboration across different functions within an organization, the availability of data and resources, and the complexity of the supply chain. Organizations can implement eco design by utilizing Life Cycle Assessment, eco-labeling, and Design for the Environment. This approach can help organizations initiate or improve sustainable production practices.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a direct impact on the manufacturing industry in Malaysia because all economic activities had to be suspended for some time. This study explores the role that eco-innovation capabilities might play in improving sustainable business performance during the ongoing pandemic. This study employs a quantitative method by distributing online questionnaires to 80 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Klang Valley, Malaysia. In the study, the relationship between sustainable business performance and the three variables of eco-innovation capabilities, i.e., eco-product innovation, eco-management innovation and eco-logistic innovation, were determined using multiple regression analysis. The results indicate that two hypotheses are accepted and the other one is rejected. The findings indicate that most manufacturing SMEs in Klang Valley have adopted eco-management innovation and eco-logistic innovation as crucial capabilities for their businesses during the pandemic. However, due to the challenges faced by these SMEs during the pandemic, eco-product innovation was found to have an insignificant relationship with sustainable business performance. It is insignificant because of the low productivity rate observed during the pandemic. Hence, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused manufacturing SMEs in the Klang Valley to not be able to maintain their operations and stay on track. Therefore, this research may contribute to the efforts of policymakers, government agencies and managers of manufacturing SMEs in developing a strong innovation platform on which manufacturing SMEs may rely for support in enhancing their business capacity and performance.

Here, the authors focused on determining the increase in consumers’ preferences for sustainable products, including that of OEMs, who are responsible for the drop in new product sales. We also assessed the effects of remanufacturing by outsourcing to third-party remanufacturers. However, the outsourcing of remanufacturing not only enables the producer to offer a remanufactured product at the same time as manufacturing new units; it also provides OEMs with the flexibility required to peruse eco-design in manufacturing and/or remanufacturing. For instance, Gree and Midea have heavily invested in eco-design to reduce energy costs in manufacturing, while Xerox has adopted a modular design approach to divert materials away from landfills and towards remanufacturing. Following observations of real-world applications, the authors developed two theoretical models in which remanufacturing can be outsourced to an independent remanufacturer, endowing the OEM with the flexibility required to enact eco-design in manufacturing or remanufacturing. This analysis reveals that OEMs tend to put more effort into eco-design in manufacturing than in remanufacturing. Furthermore, such efforts in the name of eco-design may be beneficial for both the OEM and the third-party remanufacturer. As such, this paper encourages governments to provide more incentives that will encourage OEMs to invest in eco-design in manufacturing and establish a possible “win–win” scenario in terms of both environmental and economic performances.

Research on the impact of industrial development on the ecological environment of the Yellow River Basin plays a significant role in accelerating the high-quality development of that key region of China. Since the impact of industrial agglomeration on eco-efficiency is very complex, this study constructs a panel threshold model of the impact of manufacturing agglomeration on eco-efficiency and analyzes the heterogeneity of different industries. The results led to the following conclusions: The optimal range for the industrial agglomeration level is 0.37 to 0.40. When the industrial agglomeration level is in that optimal range, the manufacturing agglomeration has a significant positive effect on eco-efficiency, and the eco-efficiency level increases by 2.87% for every 1% increase in the agglomeration level. The agglomeration of high-energy-consuming manufacturing has obvious negative externalities for eco-efficiency; however, this negative effect weakens after the threshold value is reached. However, the impact of the agglomeration of low- and medium-energy-consuming manufacturing industries on eco-efficiency is manifested as a significant positive effect, though when the agglomeration degree is low, the effect is not significant.

Manufacturing offers substantial opportunities for economic growth after COVID-19, as long as it delivers competitively priced goods while simultaneously reducing pressure on the environment. In this study, we present the methodological feasibility of the joint application of life cycle assessment (LCA) and data envelopment analysis (DEA) for assessing eco-efficiency at the sector level. We employ this methodology to assess the environmental profiles of manufacturing in Poland in relation to their gross value added, and subsequently calculate the improvement targets for the eco-inefficient manufacturing industries. The study reveals that only the chemical industry is relatively eco-efficient, whereas the remaining industries have considerable room for improvement due to their very low eco-efficiency, and thus should follow the best practices established by the chemical industry. Although there are always individual paths for manufacturing industries to achieve the decoupling of economic growth from environmental pressure, activities such as the transformation of manufacturing methods to be less energy and material intensive and/or to be low-emission, the reincorporation of waste into the manufacturing processes, and the implementation of environmental management systems should become common targets of manufacturing in Poland.

This study aims to determine the implementation of Eco-Innovation and Sustainable Manufacturing on the Circular Economic Growth of MSMEs in Langsa City. This study uses quantitative research. Data collection by conducting surveys and questionnaires. The number of respondents is 100 people consisting of MSMEs in the food and beverage sector in Langsa City. Questionnaire data was tested using SPSS Version 23. The data analysis technique used linear regression analysis. The implementation of Eco-innovation is relatively small in influencing the circular economy. However, if the individual influence on the circular economy is tested, partially Eco-Innovation has not had an influence on the circular economy. However, if tested by multiple linear regression, Eco-Innovation still has hope in increasing the circular economy of MSMEs by 25%. If tested individually, Sustainable Manufacturing has a significance value of 0.00 <0.05. The conclusion of the hypothesis research is accepted because Sustainable Manufacturing has an effect on the circular economy. Likewise, the results of the multiple linear regression of Sustainable Manufacturing have a regression coefficient of 0.620. A positive coefficient means that every 1% increase in Sustainable Manufacturing will increase the Circular Economy by 62%. The recommendation of the research results requires a deeper study of eco-innovation in the production sector.

Abstract This study used 2017-2019 Chinese A-share-listed automobile manufacturing companies as research samples to analyse the impact of the government-business relationship on eco-innovation. We found that a healthy government-business relationship had a positive impact on enterprise eco-innovation. The mediating effects test verified that a healthy government-business relationship affected enterprise eco-innovation through financing constraints. In addition, managerial ownership significantly increased the positive impact of a healthy government-business relationship on enterprise eco-innovation. We also found that a healthy government-business relationship had a more substantial impact on enterprise eco-innovation in non-state-owned enterprises when considering corporate property rights. The study results provide empirical evidence for the influence of the government-business relationship on enterprise eco-innovation and deepen our understanding of eco-innovation in China’s automobile manufacturing industry.

Noise pollution poses a significant global challenge, prompting a surge in research aimed at addressing this issue. While traditional acoustic panels using synthetic materials are commonly advocated, concerns over their health and environmental impacts have sparked interest in sustainable alternatives. This paper explores the blossoming trend of utilizing waste materials, particularly natural cellulose fibers derived from agricultural byproducts like coir fiber and rice husk, for sound absorption. Embracing the axioms of sustainability, the study investigates the feasibility of replacing synthetic materials with natural fibers to reduce noise reverberations. Natural fibers such as coir, and rice husk or jute offer promising recyclable and biodegradable choices. The present research has achieved the outcomes of "Sustainable Serenity," a project focused on redefining acoustics with aesthetically pleasing, eco-friendly panels. Comprehensive testing demonstrates a reduction in echo by 39% which tends to diminish the corresponding value of 3.2% of conventional gypsum boards. The thermal resistance yielded 82oC again surpassing the value of 68.7oC for the conventional panels. Also, the impact strength, water absorption, and carbon footprint of the casted panels compared to traditional panels were evaluated to be applauding. The research highlights the potential of sustainable acoustic panels as a cost-effective, environmentally responsible solution for noise control. The aesthetically appealing design and superior performance of the casted panels with felt coverings underscore their suitability for promoting sustainability while enhancing acoustic environments.

Manufacturing organizations must improve their environmental protection as this is the requirement of every stakeholder nowadays. At the same time, manufacturing organizations that pursue environmental protection goal should adopt eco-efficient supply chain integration as it has been known to improve environmental protection without sacrificing economic and operational performances. Nevertheless, there is a decline in integration among manufacturing organizations and their supply chain partners. Furthermore, investigations in the literature have been one-dimensional toward the relationship between practice and performance. It is obvious that current studies pointing toward energy-efficient practice to achieve eco-efficient supply chain integration but it is insufficient. Thus, this study objective is to investigate the impact of eco-efficient supply chain integration on environmental protection and proposing improvement for future research. This study has proposed an extended eco-efficient supply chain integration management model based on the gap in the literature and industry. This study elaborates on the importance of manufacturing organizations achieving environmental protection while understanding that organizations especially from developing countries cannot afford to move from economic and operational performances. The extended model proposed also underlines the improvement for eco-efficient supply chain integration management model and providing a breakthrough for future research to contribute to the organizational theory development and practical improvements.

Eco-innovation is considered in the literature as one of the most important constructs that substantially improve the environmental sustainability of manufacturing companies. However, it has been shown that companies alone cannot adequately develop eco-innovation activities, to achieve not only a higher level of eco-innovation activities, but also a significant improvement in the level of sustainable performance of manufacturing firms. In addition, little is known about the relationship between financial resources, eco-innovation and sustainable performance fill this gap in the literature and explore the relationship between these three main constructs through an extensive review of the literature. Likewise, a self-administered questionnaire was distributed to a sample of 460 through confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation models. The results obtained suggest that financial resources have significant positive effects on eco-innovation, and eco-innovation has significant positive effects on the sustainable performance of firms in the automotive industry

The sustainability of manufacturing processes lies in industrial planning and productive activity. Industrial plants are characterized by the management of resource (inputs and outputs), processing and conversion processes, which usually are organized in a linear system. Good planning will optimize the manufacturing and promoting the quality of the industrial system. Cradle to Cradle is a new paradigm for engineering and sustainable manufacturing that integrates projects (industrial parks, manufacturing plants, systems and products) in a framework consistent with the environment, adapted to the society and technology and economically viable. To carry it out, we implement this paradigm in the MGE2 (Genomic Model of Eco-innovation and Eco-design), as a methodology for designing and developing products and manufacturing systems with an approach from the cradle to cradle.

This study examines the influence of eco-innovation capability on sustainability driven innovation practices in SMEs. In this study, eco-innovation capability is represented by four factors—internal setting, strategies, operations and structure—while sustainability driven innovation practices are represented by three types of practices—process, organizational and product. The direct relationship between eco-innovation capability and sustainability driven innovation practices is statistically tested by using a sample of 397 Romanian manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises using PLS–SEM and SmartPLS software. The results show that the development of eco-innovation capability has a direct and positive effect on sustainability driven innovation practices employed in manufacturing SMEs by encouraging them to get involved in cleaner production practices, waste handling and recycling on a regular basis or integrate eco-efficiency into their operations, develop new channels for sustainable products or integrate customers’ suggestions or complaints, implement environment management systems, use eco-friendly raw materials or focus on new product development, for instance. Therefore, the paper extends the literature dedicated to eco-innovation by shedding some light on what to focus on when building eco-innovation capability.

For manufacturing companies, the transition to circular business models (CBMs) can be hampered both by the lack of relevant data and by operational tools. Eco-design, associated with Industry 4.0 IoT (Internet of Things) technologies, can be an effective methodological approach in developing products that are consistent with the principles of the circular economy. The reason is that, in the design phase, decisions are made that can significantly influence the degree of sustainability of products during their lifecycle. Therefore, in the manufacturing environment, eco-design represents an innovative approach to include sustainability among the traditional industrial variables such as functionality, aesthetics, quality, and profit. This study aimed to test eco-design as a tool to define the equilibrium point between sustainability and circular economy in the manufacturing environment of ceramic tile production, and to demonstrate how new business opportunities can be created through evolution from a linear to a circular business model, thanks to IoT and Industry 4.0 technologies used as enabling factors. The main result of this paper was the empirical validation in a manufacturing environment of sustainability paradigms through eco-design tools and digital technologies, proposing the circular business model as an operational tool to promote the competitiveness of enterprises.

Abstract Nowadays, the competitiveness of the economy, which is determined to a large extent by the innovative activities of enterprises and institutions, is of great importance for economic development. An important type of innovation is eco-innovations. Eco-innovations are currently a very timely topic undertaken by researchers, but also an important element of the activities of many companies. As a network of service providers for eco-innovations in small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises, ECOLABNET fits perfectly in this trend. It aims to support, enable and empower companies to undertake sustainable eco-innovation activities in the Baltic Sea Region and beyond. The aim of this publication is to present the results of research on the eco-innovation needs of SME enterprises of the Baltic Sea countries and potential collaboration in this field with external entities. The services developed as packages of eco-innovation services in Ecolabnet that can meet the identified needs were indicated. The survey was conducted between March and May 2019 and covered SMEs in six countries: Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. The subjects of the study were manufacturing companies that improve their products or services. The aim of the research was to gain an understanding of the needs and challenges related to eco-innovation in the context of sustainable development, to identify the future eco-innovation needs of manufacturing SMEs and collaborations with external actors, and to determine how and through which services the Ecolabnet can meet these needs and contribute to the growth of the enterprise. The manufacturing enterprises in this survey were motivated to eco-innovate. However, they lack knowledge on eco-innovation in its broadest sense, and therefore, urgently need the help of external experts, business partners, and networks in this area. The survey covered three areas: Business, Development, and Technology/Production. Business topic areas that entrepreneurs placed a high emphasis on were: branding and communication, supplier relations, customer insights and financial aspects. Within the needs in terms of development put most emphasis on product design, process development, bio-based materials and biodegradable materials. In the last category of identified needs Technology/Production respondents indicated increasing process efficiency, energy optimization and material efficiency. The research results also indicate that product design as well as branding and communication are urgent needs in the field of external expertise. Of the potential needs, the respondents also indicated customer insights, other alternative materials, business models, value chain assessment, and service design.

Implementing eco-control is a strategic way for companies to prevent environmental damage. This paper aims to analyze the effect of perceived environmental uncertainty and stakeholder pressure on system implementation through environmentally oriented organizational culture as a mediating variable. This study utilizes the PLS-SEM model using a sample of 104 manufacturing companies in Indonesia; 197 respondents from those companies completed the survey. All variables used in the research model are significant for a formative measurement model, and an internal model applied met all criteria. This study confirms a negative relationship between perceptions of environmental uncertainty and environmentally oriented organizational culture (β = 0.174, p < 0.01). The opposite effect is shown by the relationship between stakeholder pressure and organizational culture (β = 0.379, p < 0.01), and the positive effect of organizational culture on the implementation of eco-control in companies is significant (β = 0.650, p < 0.01). In addition, organizational culture partially mediates the relationship between perceptions of environmental uncertainty and the implementation of the eco-control system (β = 0.317, p < 0.05) and between stakeholder pressure and the implementation of this system (β = 0.401, p < 0.05). When companies through managers face uncertainty from the ecological environment and stakeholder pressure, they should utilize an eco-control system, which can succeed in profit goals and environmental responsibility.

The concept of eco-innovation has begun to be considered as a solution to preventing environmental damage, especially since the 1990s. Eco-innovation is expected to reduce amounts of waste, air pollution, and material resource usage. However, the effect of eco-innovation on environmental and financial performance has received limited attention. This paper seeks to fill this gap by studying the effect of eco-innovation on environmental and financial performance. In order to do so, data were obtained by collecting surveys completed by 219 manufacturing companies in Turkey. By using structural equation modeling, we found that eco-innovation has a direct effect on pollution prevention, resource saving and recycling; furthermore, it has an indirect positive effect on cost reduction and thus on economic performance. The findings suggest that decision-makers should adopt eco-innovation due to its cost advantage and pollution prevention potential.

The relevance of this article is dictated by the acuteness of the environmental pollution issue, especially from the construction sector, which presents a challenge both for Ukraine and globally. One of the solutions to this problem is the implementation of green building, which involves the use of environmentally friendly materials, innovative waste-free and low-waste technologies, alternative energy sources, waste recycling, etc. This necessitates new, ecologically oriented approaches in the training of qualified construction workers, particularly tile setters. Objective: Based on global and national experience in green building, this study aims to investigate the issue of training tile setters in Ukraine using eco-oriented technologies and to develop recommendations for improving the process of integrating these technologies into educational curricula and programs. Methods: Analysis of domestic and foreign sources on ecological education and green building, empirical research on the practice of applying ecotechnologies by tile setters in Ukraine. Results: The essence of eco-oriented professional training is revealed, the foreign and national experiences in green building are analyzed; eco-oriented technologies for tile setters are examined; the main ecological requirements for building materials and technologies for tiling works are disclosed; corresponding recommendations for the use of eco-oriented technologies in the professional training of future tile setters are prepared. Conclusions: Eco-oriented professional training must become an integral part of the professional competence of tile setters, bringing changes both to the content and methods of education. For instance, during tiling works, environmentally friendly hydro insulation membrane materials are used; powerful construction companies that conduct eco-certification of their products have emerged; the use of mastics and adhesives based on dry building mixtures reduces construction waste and, consequently, soil pollution at the construction site; more precise laser measuring devices are increasingly used in tiling works. Therefore, in training tile setters, attention should be paid to studying modern green technologies. The importance of developing normative legal acts on eco-certification of building materials and technologies, and subsequently buildings, is substantiated. It is recommended to revise the National Standard of Professional Education for the profession of tile setter, considering ecological requirements, and for teachers of vocational education institutions to pay special attention to forming ecological competence in future tile setters.
