La question des formes narratives, de la représentation et de la lecture dans le roman anglais postmoderne s'inscrit dans une perspective qui vise à relier la pratique littéraire et artistique au contexte historique et culturel postmoderne de la fin du vingtième siècle. Ce contexte est caractérisé par un sentiment d'incertitude et de doute. En rapport avec ceci, l'étude est centrée sur les stratégies de déstabilisation de la représentation réaliste et des modes la construction du sens. En effet, le roman anglais postmoderne remet en question le sens commun qui constitue le fondement de l'écriture réaliste qu'elle soit histoire, biographie ou fiction. La principale stratégie consiste en l'introduction, parallèlement au récit réaliste, d'une version du principe d'incertitude et d'un discours interrogatif qui vise à désintégrer les notions communes et insoupçonnées du langage comme véhicule neutre, de la réalité et de la subjectivité comme étant saisissables et (re)présentables. La subversion des habitudes de lecture (et d'écriture) qui en résulte implique une problématisation des principes téléologiques qui déterminent nos rapports au texte et au monde
This thesis is concerned with questions of form, representation and the reading process in the English postmodern novel. The idea is to relate the postmodern novel of the last decades of the twentieth-century to a historical and cultural (post-industrial, postmodern and post-humanist) context characterized by a general feeling of uncertainty and doubt. Related to this is the study of the destabilizing strategies of realist representation and of the common modes of meaning-construction. In fact, postmodern English fiction calls into question the common sense basis of realistic writing be it historical, biographical or fictional. The principal strategy consist in introducing, parallel to a realistic narrative, a version of the uncertainty principle and an outward interrogative discourse that seeks to subvert familiar notions of language, reality and subjectivity. The resulting subversion of the reading (and writing) habits implies a problematizing of the teleological principles that determine our relationships with text and world

This thesis argues that Barthelme's major 1985 essay "Not-Knowing" contains within its title Barthelme's central artistic idea, and that not-knowing informs both the subject of his fiction and his philosophy of art. This study will be the first critical treatment of Barthelme that positions his work from beginning to end in terms of the dimensions of not-knowing that came out of his own reading in psychology, art theory, philosophy, religion, and education, offering coherent readings of content and suggesting the ways in which content relates to form. The Introduction explores the origins of Barthelme's ideas of not-knowing, paying special attention to the influence of Mallarmé, Joyce, and Beckett on Barthelme's first characterisations of not-knowing, creativity, and reception. The first chapter gives an in-depth reading of Come Back, Dr. Caligari (1964), Barthelme's first collection of stories. Though Barthelme had not yet begun to formally theorise his ideas of not-knowing, they were already latent in Come Back, Dr. Caligari's characterisation of psychological experience, specifically in relation to anxiety, boredom, and interpretation. The second chapter looks at the ways in which Harold Rosenberg’s theories of the visual arts, and especially collage, which Barthelme encountered while co-editing Location magazine with Rosenberg in the early 1960s, address form and not-knowing, and how Barthelme treats these issues in Unspeakable Practices, Unnatural Acts (1968), City Life (1970), The Slightly Irregular Fire Engine (1971), Sadness (1972), Guilty Pleasures (1974), and Amateurs (1976). The third chapter shows how Barthelme's university studies in 19th century philosophy, especially Kierkegaard in The Concept of Irony (1841) and Kierkegaard's treatment of Schlegel in that treatise, inform his concern with irony, both in theory and practice, in City Life (1970), Great Days (1979), and Overnight to Many Distant Cities (1983). Chapter Four argues that Kierkegaard's theories of education and religion in Either/Or (1843) and The Present Age (1846), as well as the contemporary incarnation of Dewey's ideas of progressive education, both had a profound influence on Barthelme's ideas about the way a society is educated into knowingness, the artist's aspiration toward not-knowing, and the validity of religion in the postmodern world. The conclusion to the thesis reexamines the Introduction's argument about literary influence through a brief reading of The Dead Father (1975). Barthelme is recognised as one of the most important American postmodernist writers, and yet there has been relatively little critical treatment of his oeuvre. The major books that address Barthelme's work, which include Jerome Klinkowitz's Literary Disruptions: The Making of a Post-Contemporary American Fiction (1975) and Donald Barthelme: An Exhibition (1991), as well as Alan Wilde's Horizons of Assent (1981) and Stanley Trachtenberg's Understanding Donald Barthelme (1990), belong to a two-decade span of classifying writers such as Barthelme, Thomas Pynchon, Robert Coover, and John Barth using a limited set of ideas about postmodernism that were interesting as theory at the time, but did little to explore the actual literary, philosophical, and aesthetic content and contexts of these writers' works (with the possible exception of Pynchon). This thesis aims to rescue Barthelme from now-hackneyed ways of talking about postmodernism, which include lumping various aesthetic techniques under the rubric of "metafiction," claiming that the era's sole interest is in surface at the expense of depth, and that the dependence upon clichés is a deliberate expression of artistic exhaustion.

La notion d’idéologie figure parmi les principaux facteurs qui ont un impact sur l’esprit des traducteurs lors de la production du texte cible. L’analyse critique du discours (ACD) est souvent utilisée pour analyser le discours politique afin de découvrir l’idéologie de l’orateur. En adoptant l’analyse critique du discours et en mettant particulièrement l’accent sur le cadre théorique de Hatim et Mason (1990, 1991, 1997), la présente étude a pour objectif de révéler la relation entre la langue et l’idéologie impliquées dans la traduction, de découvrir les hypothèses idéologiques sous-jacentes dans les textes source et cible, et de déterminer si les idéologies des traducteurs sont imposées ou non dans leurs traductions. Pour ce faire, nous analyserons la traduction en persan du discours du président Trump lors de son retrait de l’accord nucléaire iranien. Afin d’indiquer les orientations idéologiques du traducteur, l’étude s’est principalement concentrée sur deux caractéristiques textuelles, à savoir la transitivité et la lexicalisation. Mots-clés : traduction, idéologie, analyse critique du discours, discours politique.

This study asks whether and how the presidential inaugural address influences American audiences. The current study explores how the 2017 Presidential Inaugural Address of Donald Trump influences audiences. Two areas were studied: Candidate image and the state of the nation. I hypothesized that participants who watched the address would have different attitudes regarding candidate image and the state of the nation compared to non-viewers. I also hypothesized that viewers of the address who voted for Donald Trump would respond differently to candidate image and the state of the nation when compared with those who did not vote for Trump. With one exception, none of the findings was significant. That is, attitudes of inaugural address viewers and non-viewers were similar, and attitudes of those who voted for the president and those who did not vote for the president were also similar. The exception was noted between those who voted for the candidate and oppositional voters: Those who voted for Donald Trump reported the nation is headed "in the right direction" while dissenters disagreed.

A presente pesquisa é resultado de um estudo sobre 10 produções animadas do início da década de 1940, dos estúdios Walt Disney. Protagonizadas pelo personagem Pato Donald, verifica-se nelas as mais diversas formas de representações traçadas pelos estúdios a respeito da Segunda Guerra Mundial e de alguns de seus atores: os Estados Unidos da América e seus inimigos. Pela análise de diálogos, de letras de músicas, das interações entre as personagens das tramas, tenta-se enxergar a construção da imagem do inimigo (os países do Eixo) e de si (EUA); também, a possível construção de uma memória sobre eles (Alemanha, Estados Unidos, Japão...) que hoje se faz presente. ________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This research is the result of a study of 10 Walt Disney‘s animated productions of the early 1940.With Donald Duck, the Disney Studios drawn forms of representations on the Second World War and some of its actors: the United States and its enemies. For the analysis of the dialogues, the lyrics, the interactions between the characters of the frame, one tries to see the construction of the image of the enemy (the countries of the Axis) and the construction of the self image (USA). It is also tried to see the possible construction of a memory on them (Germany, United States, Japan ...) that is present today.

Combining analyses of primary documents housed at American, Russian and Czech archives, and employing industrial analysis, market analysis, and analytical tools developed in reception studies, this thesis examines Hollywood's post-war operations in Eastern Europe, the strategies that were employed to advance them, and the responses of the indigenous film industries of Eastern Europe to them. While scholars examining Hollywood's post-war international activities have focused on western European markets, arguing that they were of supreme importance to Hollywood, this thesis shows that Eastern Europe was also central to Hollywood's post-war economic agenda. The major Hollywood studios, I argue, were, as early as 1944, drawing up highly ambitious plans to become the dominant player on Eastern European markets, including the Soviet market, and were working to prevent the Soviet film industry from expanding into Western Europe. Sitting at the border of East and West, the small country of Czechoslovakia played a key role in what this thesis calls Hollywood's Soviet Sphere Project. By revealing the extent to which expansion into Eastern Europe was central to Hollywood's short-, medium- and long-term economic objectives, this thesis offers new insight into Hollywood's domestic and international conduct during the early stages of the Cold War and reorients understandings of the relationships between Hollywood and communism. To date, scholars have focused considerable attention on the lengths to which Hollywood went to position itself as an anti-communist institution by distancing itself from, and demonizing, Communists and communism across the late 1940s and 1950s. However, this thesis shows that Hollywood's relationships to communism and Communists were more pragmatic, opportunistic, and ambivalent than previously thought. And, by revealing how Hollywood's Soviet Sphere Project clashed with global agenda of the Soviet government and film industry, this thesis complicates notions of Hollywood's worldwide dominance, and contributes to our understanding of mid-twentieth-century globalization.

On désigne par l'expression de « Synthèse Moderne » la renaissance du darwinisme au sein d'un certain nombre de sciences biologiques entre les années 1930 et les années 1950, et dont le généticien T. Dobzhansky a exprimé l'orientation majeure en disant que « plus rien en biologie n'a de sens qu'à la lumière de l'évolution ». Cette Synthèse s'est effectuée dans le sillage d'une nouvelle discipline, la génétique des populations : l'évolution a été dès lors comprise comme une modification de la composition génétique des espèces. Dans ce travail d'histoire des sciences centré sur les recherches de William D. Hamilton, John Maynard Smith et George C. Williams entre les années 1960 et les années 1980, je décris un épisode postérieur à la Synthèse Moderne, au cours duquel les approches évolutionnistes éclairent un nouveau domaine des sciences du vivant, les comportements des animaux. Ces approches sont néo¬darwiniennes, parce qu'elles placent la sélection naturelle au cœur du raisonnement évolutionniste. En un sens, ce programme est conservateur : les outils de la génétique des populations sont employés pour développer une théorie évolutionniste des comportements. Mais ces recherches entraînent une importante clarification des fondements de la théorie de la sélection naturelle. Elles conduisent enfin à renouveler le discours évolutionniste, en introduisant de nouvelles méthodes de modélisation désormais émancipées de la génétique des populations, qui traitent le comportement au niveau du phénotype, comme une stratégie adaptative, susceptible d'une analyse en termes de coûts et de bénéfices. Elles favorisent la constitution d'une nouvelle discipline, l'écologie du comportement
During the Modem Synthesis (1930-1950), several biological sciences were integrated into a common evolutionary framework, which gave a central status to a new formal science, population genetics. In this work, I study an episode following the Modem Synthesis, the integration of the study of animal behaviour in an evolutionary framework between the 1960s and the 1980s. I follow in close detail the works and careers of William D. Hamilton (1936-2000), John Maynard Smith (1920-2004) and George C. Williams (1926-2010) who developed an evolutionary theory of behaviour. These new approaches were neo-Darwinian, since natural selection became the core of evolutionary reasoning. This program was conservative: the classical tools of population genetics were used to develop an evolutionary theory of behaviour. But this research led also to an important clarification of the central tenets of the theory of natural selection. Finally, these theoreticians were able to build new models without mentioning genes: in phenotype-centred models, behaviours were considered as adaptive strategies, and developed a cost / benefit analysis. This research catalysed the birth of a new field, behavioural ecology

Resumo: Desde o início do cinema, quando começaram a ser elaboradas as primeiras teorias cinematográficas, já existiam, nas análises fílmicas, pressupostos que tentavam definir a figura do espectador, o que ocasionou o surgimento de um pensamento heterogêneo com relação a sua função como sujeito que assiste a uma manifestação artística. Este trabalho pretende posicionar o espectador cinematográfico como um sujeito que realiza uma poética da leitura acontecendo como um jogo numa área transiciona/localizada entre ele e o filme a que assiste. Para tanto, serão desenvolvidos conceitos com base na teoria winnicottiana, teorias dos jogos e teoria do efeito estético para estabelecer possíveis efeitos de sentido que podem ocorrer na área transicional, a qual coloca o espectador em um estado ativo, construindo e atualizando experiências ao ver o filme. Para a aplicação desta leitura, foram escolhidos dois filmes do cineasta russo Andrei Tarkovski: Solaris e Stalker

Esta dissertação utiliza um livro de receitas de grande difusão Dona Benta: Comer Bem (1940-2003) como fonte para estudos em história da alimentação. Sem a pretensão de esgotar ou esmiuçar o assunto, alguns temas são suscitados. Os ingredientes utilizados, alterados com o passar do tempo e que podem denotar transformações no gosto e nos padrões dietéticos. As formas de preparo e utensílios envolvidos nesse processo, que constituem o saber fazer culinário, muitas vezes transmitido oral ou empiricamente, e que é compilado e codificado em livros de receitas. As transformações tecnológicas introduziram na cozinha, um aparato material que transformou a língua das receitas em seus modos e tempos. Por fim, as concepções médicas vigentes e a construção do gosto ajudam a determinar as escolhas. Os padrões médicos que recomendavam dietas diárias de 3.500 calorias somadas à diversificação alimentar e o refinamento do gosto da dona-de-casa, a grande responsável pelo sucesso dos preparados, podem ser notados no livro de receitas estudado. Analisá-lo como fonte de pesquisa, acreditando-se que é possível, por meio de sua estrutura, função e conteúdo, identificar hábitos e práticas que nos auxiliem a compreender a cozinha brasileira desde os anos de 1940 até a atualidade é o objetivo desta dissertação de mestrado.
This dissertation uses a cookbook of a large dissemination - Dona Benta: Eating Well - (1940-2003) - as a source for studies in the history of food. Without the pretense of ran out of ideas or make a strict inquiry into the matter, some issues are studied. The ingredients used, modified over time and that may denote changes in taste and dietary patterns. The preparation forms and equipment involved in this process, and the know how, often transmitted orally or empirically, is compiled and codified in recipes books. The technological changes introduced in the kitchen, and the material goods transformed the language of their ways and times. Finally, the current medical concepts and construction of taste help to determine the choices. The diet recommendation of 3.500 calories daily added to food diversification and refinement of the taste of the owner-to-house, responsible for the great success of the preparations, may be noted in the book of recipes studied. Consider it as a source of research, believing that it is possible, by its structure, function and content, identify patterns and practices that help us to understand the Brazilian cuisine since the years of 1940 to the present is the goal of this Masters dissertation.

Reid Concerts began in 1841 and were defined by Donald Francis Tovey as those concerts presented by the University of Edinburgh under the auspices of the Professors of Music, based on the guidance laid down in the will and codicil of General John Reid. Reid was a major benefactor who bequeathed funds for the establishment of the Chair of the Theory of Music at The University of Edinburgh with a condition attached to the bequest that a concert be held each year in his memory. This thesis will explore the development and evolution of the first 100 years of these concerts through the contents of the available original concert programmes and related ephemera held in the Centre for Research Collections at The University of Edinburgh - a valuable historical resource which has never been fully recorded or researched. Analysis of this resource will focus on the programming, people, personalities, places, and perspectives associated with the performances and offer insight into the choices and influences of the Professors of Music charged with the organisation and implementation of the concerts over an extended timescale from 1841 to 1941. To aid this analysis a searchable online database has been designed and developed to provide outline performance details and some background information on the contents of many of these Reid concert programmes: http://www.reidconcerts.music.ed.ac.uk. The database is both a finding aid to these contents and a research tool providing a basis for future studies. This research will contribute to the history of the University and City of Edinburgh and the social and musical history of concerts in the University from 1841. The findings emphasise the usefulness of printed concert programmes in recording trends in concert presentation and programming and will broaden the knowledge of this use of such ephemera for academic research.

This study aims to understand as the children who show expressive behaviors of antisocial trends at N?cleo de A??o Social da Praia do Meio in Natal-RN city, linked to Secretaria Municipal do Trabalho e Assist?ncia Social-SEMIT, which experience the relation with the social educator in role of caregiver. This matter was investigated within an interpretation and approach qualitative view of the social phenomena, using the Thematic Analysis technique of drawings and stories which express the relation with the caregiver gotten in sessions of playful interactions between child and researcher in order to understand the child experiences with the social educator. The used theoretical referential is by D. W. Winnicott who associates the social trend to a failure of environment in child holding. The subjects expressed the need of a firm and protective environment and they look for this in NASPM educators. Moreover, they show as solitude and vulnerability take part their lives due to the lack of emotional holding on family that favors the involvement with violent groups. But, it is worth pointing out that the children value the Nucleus environment when has offered them a safe holding which can be positive the established linking with it. Such conclusion points out to the possibility, recognized theoretically, that exists from these children to resume the way of healthy development
O estudo objetiva compreender como as crian?as que apresentam comportamentos expressivos de tend?ncia anti-social no N?cleo de A??o Social da Praia do Meio em Natal - RN, ligado ? Secretaria Municipal do Trabalho e Assist?ncia Social SEMTAS, vivenciam a rela??o com o educador social, no papel de cuidador. Investigou-se esta quest?o dentro de uma vis?o qualitativa de abordagem e interpreta??o dos fen?menos sociais, utilizando a t?cnica da An?lise Tem?tica dos desenhos e est?rias que expressam a rela??o com o cuidador, obtidos em sess?es de intera??o l?dica entre crian?a e pesquisadora, para a compreens?o das viv?ncias da crian?a com o educador social. O referencial te?rico utilizado ? de D. W. Winnicott, que associa a tend?ncia anti-social ? aus?ncia do holding necess?rio, ou seja a uma falha do ambiente na sustenta??o da crian?a. Os sujeitos expressaram a necessidade de um ambiente firme e acolhedor e buscam isto nos educadores do NASPM. Mostraram, tamb?m, como a solid?o e a vulnerabilidade permeiam suas vidas por causa da falta de sustenta??o emocional na fam?lia, o que favorece o envolvimento com grupos violentos. Mas, vale ressaltar, as crian?as valorizam o ambiente do N?cleo quando lhes oferece um suporte seguro, podendo ser positiva a vincula??o estabelecida com ele. Tal conclus?o aponta que existe a possibilidade reconhecida teoricamente destas crian?as retomarem o caminho do desenvolvimento saud?vel

Resumo: A reação inicial da administração de George W. Bush aos atentados de onze de setembro de 2001 foi atacar o governo Talebã no Afeganistão, visando a derrubar o regime do pregador religioso Omar do poder e a estabelecer bases que serviriam para a caçada à al- Qaeda, que tinha naquele país um santuário para planejar suas ações. A capital Cabul, assim como outras regiões no interior afegão, foram conquistadas rapidamente, isto teoricamente em função do plano militar estadunidense, baseado no emprego de Forças de Operações Especiais, poderio aéreo e na utilização de um parceiro local: a Aliança do Norte. O suposto sucesso dos Estados Unidos seria decorrente, conforme o discurso oficial norte-americano, da "transformação militar" que estava sendo promovida pelo secretário de Defesa Donald Rumsfeld. O chamado modelo afegão foi considerado um "novo" modo de guerra americano e, a partir de então, dentro do contexto de "guerra ao terror", as Forças de Operações Especiais passaram a ocupar, como nunca antes na história dos EUA, um lugar por demais proeminente dentro da concepção estratégica de Washington. Todavia, passados cerca de sete anos dos movimentos iniciais de invasão, a situação afegã não é das melhores, o que leva ao questionamento da validade e aparente inovação daquelas ações militares americanas.
Abstract: The initial reaction of the George W. Bush administration to the violent acts of september 11, 2001 was to attack the Taliban government in Afghanistan, aiming to bring down the Mullah Omar regime and to set up bases that would serve to the hunting of al- Qaida, organization which had that country as its sanctuary to plan its actions. The capital Cabul, as well as another regions in the countryside, were quickly conquered, theoretically because the american military plan, based on Special Operations Forces, air power and in the use of a local allie: the Northern Alliance. The supposed success of the United States would be the result, according to the official speech, of the "military transformation" that was being encouraged by the Defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld. The afghan model was considered a "new" american way of war and the Special Operations Forces, inside the context of "global war on terror", went on to the center of the american strategic conception. However, after seven years of the invasion, the afghan situation is not good, so it is possible to question the validity and the apparent inovation of that american military actions.

In the early 1900s tensions began to appear within the architectural profession, as private practitioners struggled to deal with the implications of professional colleagues moving into public sector employment. Sir Basil Spence and Sir Donald Gibson began their architectural training in the mid-1920s and, as tensions between the sectors intensified, Spence entered private practice and Gibson chose to enter the public sector. Each became an exemplar of his chosen sector of the profession and yet both have, until recently, escaped critical attention. The tensions between the public and private sectors of the profession have been acknowledged within the historiography, but not received detailed analysis. This thesis advances the current historiography by presenting an examination of the division between the sectors, focusing on the relationship between the RIBA and the public sector union AASTA and assessing the influence of AASTA on Gibson's Coventry City Architect's Department. Through an examination of archival material, contemporary published material, and buildings, this thesis builds on the work of the Sir Basil Spence Archive Project, adding detailed accounts of his early life, architectural training, and RIBA presidency, presenting new information and correcting certain aspects of the accepted historiography. It likewise presents new information on Gibson's early life and training and his central role in achieving improved status and representation for the public sector. An analysis of selected projects provides a comparative study of their contrasting approaches to architecture: the technically informed, collaborative team-work of Gibson and the individual artistry of Spence. Both men played pivotal roles in reforming the RIBA and in changing public and professional perceptions of the architect, nevertheless, the long lineage and complex nature of tensions within the profession meant that the public/private division was never be bridged and issues of status and representation remained essentially immutable.

Resumo: Este trabalho estuda a presença da obra Peter Pan, de James Banie, nos textos infantis de Monteiro Lobato. Neste processo de apropriação e adaptação da personagem estrangeira, temos, num primeiro momento, a adaptação lobatiana (Peter Pan, 1930) em que a história de Peter Pan é contada por Dona Benta a seus netos. A personagem de James Banie aparece depois em outras histórias de Lobato, entre as quais se destacam Memórias da Emilia (1936) - obra na qual Peter Pan surge no Sítio como um visitante ¿ e o Pica pau Amarelo (1939) - obra em que Peter Pan resolve mudar-se para o Sítio, juntamente com outras personagens estrangeiras. Discutimos, assim, a presença de uma personagem da literatura infantil inglesa dentro da obra infantil de Monteiro Lobato, observando a maneira como o escritor trabalha com esta personagem em seus textos. Estabelecemos também um paralelo entre o trabalho feito por Lobato com esta obra específica e os planos do escritor para a criação de uma literatura infantil brasileira
Abstract:"This thesis is a study of the presence of Peter Pan, by James Barrie, in the texts for children by Monteiro Lobato. The process of appropriation and adaptation by Monteiro Lobato of James B arrie s' character consists, first, of an adaptation (Peter Pan, 1930), in which Dona Benta tells the story of the foreign character to her grandchildren. Second, there are other stories by Lobato in which James Barrie's character takes parto Examples are Memorias de Emilia (1936)and O Picapau Amarelo (1939). In the former, Peter Pan is a guest at Sitio do Picapau Amarelo, and in the latter, he decides to move to Sitio together with the other foreign characters. The thesis discusses the presence of a character that belongs to British literature in Lobato's work. The goal of this discussion is to show how the author operates the insertion of this character in his texts. A parallel is also drawn between Lobato's works for children and the writer's plans of creating Brazilian literature for children

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis has two aims. The first is to assess the cogency of the three most influential theories of intention – namely those of Elizabeth Anscombe, Donald Davidson and Michael Bratman. I identify five requirements that a convincing account of intention must fulfil, and then assess each of these theories in light of these five requirements. In the course of this analysis, I demonstrate that, while each of these theories contributes to our understanding of intention, none of them meet all the specified requirements. This leads to the second aim of this thesis, which is to develop an account of intention capable of overcoming the problems inherent in the foregoing theories of intention and hence fulfilling the specified requirements. This account is built around the definition of intention as a complex mental entity, consisting of two components: a revisable pro-attitude and a belief that the agent will try to fulfil this pro-attitude. It must further be possible for the agent to reflexively reconstruct the belief component without external information. I begin by setting out the five requirements for a convincing account of intention. In each case, I explain why it is necessary for a theory of intention to meet the relevant requirement, and elaborate on what is needed for an account of intention to fulfil this requirement. The five requirements for a convincing account of intention are: 1) It must explain the unity of the three seemingly irreconcilable uses of intention; 2) it must explain the epistemic requirements for intention; 3) it must clarify the relationship between intention and motivation, intention and causes, and intention and reasons; 4) it must explain the relationship between intention and practical reasoning, and 5) it must clarify the relationship between intention and moral responsibility. Together, these five requirements form the yardstick against which I evaluate the different theories of intention. With this yardstick in mind, I am then able to assess each of the influential theories of intention developed by Anscombe, Davidson, and Bratman. In each case, I examine how the relevant theory of intention fares in meeting each of the five requirements. This analysis shows that, while each theory provides a number of important insights, none of them succeeds in meeting all five requirements. Such analysis further enables me to identify the specific difficulties that have stymied the attempts of all three thinkers to develop a convincing account of intention. Having identified the strengths and weaknesses of the three preceding accounts of intention, I then try to work out an alternative account of intention that would not fall prey to the same complications. Following the same modus operandi as before, I evaluate my proposed account against the five requirements for a convincing theory of intention. In each case, I show that my account not only succeeds in meeting the specified criterion, but also, crucially, that it is able to overcome the difficulties that have plagued previous attempts to fulfil this criterion. I conclude that, while this account is not necessarily conclusive, it does meet the conditions for a convincing account of intention and thereby casts some light into the conceptual darkness surrounding intention that Anscombe identified more than half a century ago.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis het twee oogmerke. Die eerste is om die oortuigingskrag van die drie mees invloedryke teorieë van intensie te beoordeel – naamlik die van Elizabeth Anscombe, Donald Davidson en Michael Bratman. Ek identifiseer vyf vereistes waaraan ‘n oortuigende verklaring van intensie moet voldoen en beoordeel dan elk van hierdie teorieë aan die hand van hierdie vyf vereistes. In die loop van hierdie analise wys ek dat, alhoewel elkeen van hierdie teorieë tot ons verstaan van intensie bydra, geeneen aan al die gespesifiseerde vereistes voldoen nie. Dit lei tot die tweede oogmerk van die tesis, wat die ontwikkeling van ‘n teorie van intensie behels wat daartoe in staat is om die probleme wat inherent aan die voorgenoemde teorieë is, te oorkom en wat dus aan die gespesifiseerde vereistes voldoen. Hierdie teorie berus op die definisie van intensie as ‘n komplekse mentale entiteit wat uit twee komponente bestaan: ‘n wysigbare pro-houding en ‘n oortuiging dat die agent hierdie pro-houding sal probeer vervul. Dit moet verder ook vir die agent moontlik wees om die oortuigingskomponent refleksief te rekonstrueer sonder eksterne inligting. Gesamentlik vorm hierdie vyf vereistes die maatstaf waarvolgens ek die verskillende teorieë van intensie evalueer. Met hierdie maatstaf in gedagte is ek dan in staat daartoe om elkeen van die invloedryke teorieë van intensie, wat ontwikkel is deur Anscombe, Davidson en Bratman, te beoordeel. In elke geval ondersoek ek hoe die relevante teorie van intensie vaar in die voldoening aan elkeen van hierdie vyf vereistes. Hierdie analise wys dat, alhoewel elke teorie ‘n aantal belangrike insigte bied, geen van hul daarin slaag om aan al vyf vereistes te voldoen nie. So ‘n analise stel my verder in staat om die spesifieke probleme te identifiseer waardeur die pogings van al drie denkers om ‘n oortuigende verklaring van intensie te ontwikkel, gestuit is. Nadat ek die sterk en swakpunte van die drie voorafgaande verklarings van intensie geïdentifiseer het, probeer ek dan om ‘n alternatiewe teorie van intensie uit te werk wat nie aan hierdie selfde komplikasies onderhewig is nie. Deur dieselfde modus operandi as voorheen te volg, evalueer ek my voorgestelde verklaring aan die hand van die vyf vereistes vir ‘n oortuigende teorie van intensie. In elke geval wys ek dat my verklaring nie bloot daaraan slaag om aan die gespesifiseerde kriterium te voldoen nie, maar ook, van deurslaggewende belang, dat dit in staat daartoe is om die probleme te oorkom waardeur vorige pogings om die kriterium te vervul, geteister is. The objective of this work is to entertain the idea that the field of the human experience, in the complexity of clinical situations, requires an opening to the imponderable. This creates the proper conditions for the vitalization of the existencial event. Initially, it was necessary to develop a theoretical framework presenting and linking some aspects of the Heiddeggerian, the Levinasian and the Winnicottian perspectives in their respectives matrices of intersubjectivity; showing, through clinical dynamics, the paradoxical articulation of these different matrices in the constitution of subjectivities; showing the implications of these matrices of intersubjective conception in the understanding and in the implementation of effective clinical approaches. Finally, we focused, in the context of therapeutic situations, on the importance of paradoxical interventions in the constitution of intrapsychic Intersubjectivity. This study showed that the selves" referring both to my self and to the self of the other person is far beyond our absolute comprehension. Something alien to us, coming from our inner self and from the inner self of the other person with whom we relate, will always be emerging. We conclude this study with the realization of both the paradox and the complexity of the intersubjective constitutions, beyond the limit of human knowledge, which requires an ethical approach of waiting for what transpires within the meandering setting of the clinical work. The clinical work, by itself, demands therapeutic interventions equally complex and paradoxical
Este trabalho teve como objetivo considerar a idéia de que o campo da experiência humana, na complexidade das situações clínicas, exige a abertura para o imponderável, criando condições para a vitalização do acontecimento existencial. Para isso, buscou-se, inicialmente, construir um arcabouço teórico que apresentasse e relacionasse alguns pontos das perspectivas heideggeriana, levinasiana e winnicottiana nas matrizes de intersubjetividade correspondentes, mostrando, por meio da dinâmica clínica, a articulação paradoxal dessas diferentes matrizes de intersubjetividade nas constituições subjetivas; indicando as implicações das matrizes de concepção intersubjetiva na compreensão e nos efetivos manejos clínicos e, finalmente, focalizando, em situações terapêuticas, a importância das intervenções paradoxais para o psiquismo humano na sua constituição intersubjetiva intrapsíquica. Revelou-se, por meio deste estudo, que o si-mesmo tanto de si como do outro escapa à nossa capacidade totalizadora. Algo estranho a nós, proveniente de nossa interioridade e do outro com o qual nos relacionamos, estará sempre irrompendo. Conclui-se com o reconhecimento do paradoxo e da complexidade das constituições intersubjetivas, além do limite do conhecimento humano, o qual exige uma posição ética de espera do que se revela nos meandros do trabalho clínico, que, por sua vez, demanda intervenções terapêuticas, igualmente, paradoxais e complexas

Resumo: Esse trabalho estuda o topos da donzela-guerreira, sua adequação e afastamento nos romances Luzia-Homem e Dona Guidinha do Poço. Também estuda a permanência dessa figura no imaginário da cultura o cidental que tem sido suficientemente forte para as freqüentes reaparições dentro da tradição literária Ocidental, com o tempo, permitindo-lhe configurar os caracteres fundamentais que formamum microenredo de forte coesão interna, perfeitamente reconhecível porque possui um ethos específico em sua estrutura profunda, mas que se pode recobrir de inúmeras variações no nível de sua estrutura de superficie. O motivo da donzela-guerreira nos veio de fora, é claro. Entre nós, sua figuração se iniciou pela literatura popular, especialmente de cordel, depois conseguiu espaço na literatura erudita, especialmente no gênero romance, cujo locus, palco à sua narrativa, é o universo do sertão, lugar atávico, próximo do mundo semifeudal, cujas coordenadas socioculturais e políticas se pautam pelos mores seguros do patriarcalismo. Em Luzia-Homem, as dificuldades da tentativa de figuração desse topos são decorrentes do apego de Domingos Olímpio aos estereótipos femininos das convenções romântica e naturalista, cujos figurinos o impedem de criar uma mulher audaz, belicosa, de vontade própria e que faça jus agendi desses caracteres. Resulta que acaba por criar uma figura limítrofe, muito mais uma espécie de mulher biônica, inanida de susto. Ser híbrido e excessivo, numa espécie de mostrengo inverossímil, longe da pretendida figura da donzelaguerreIra. Em Dona Guidinha do Poço, Manuel de Oliveira Paiva erige a figura de uma mulher forte e determinada, capaz de conduzir o rumo de sua vida e de determinar o destino dos demais, porém incapaz de qualquer gesto e heroísmo, ou de altruísmo. Sua conduta, centrada em si mesma, muito a afasta da estóica donzela-guerreira. Guida é encarnação cabal da mandona metida à fidalga, mercê da fortuna herdada do pai, fazendo com que sua figura se aproxime do topos da mandona desabusada, nossa versão sertaneja das figuras cômicas do alazón, bufão ou da megera, antiga habitante da comédia grega. Essa personagem encaixa-se como luva na categoria da personagem tipo, sendo, portanto, também limítrofe à tópica da donzela-guerreira
Abstract: This research work studies the maiden-warrior's topos, her adequacy and withdrawal, in the novels 'Luzia-Homem' and 'Dona Guidinha do Poço.' It also studies this character' s permanence in the imaginary of the western culture which has been strong enough to her fi-equent reappearing into the western literary tradition, with time, thus allowing her to configure the fundamental characters which form a micro-plot of strong internal cohesion, perfectly recognisable for it has a specific ethos in its deep structure, but which can be reappeared in countless variations in its surface structure. The figure of the maiden-warrior was brought into light fi-om the outside, of course. Among us her appearance started fi-om the popular literature, especially in the 'cordel' literature. After that it conquered space in the scholar literature, mainly in the novel genre, which foeus, stage to its narrative, is the arid countryside universe, atavistic place, near the semi-feudal world, which socio-cultural and political co-ordination are regulated by the safe mores of patriarchy. In 'Luzia-Homem' the difficulties in the attempt of appearance of this topos are resulting fi-om the devotion of Domingos Olímpio to the feminine stereotype of the romantic and naturalist convention, which clothes design impedes him to create a fearless, bellicose, determined woman, and willing to a jus agendi ofthese characters. As a result it creates a contiguous figure, a sort of bionic, fearless woman. She is a hybrid and excessive being, a type of improbable lubber, far fi-ombeing the intended maiden-warrior's figure. Studies of sexual dimorphism of the sacrum have generally been conducted as part of broader population research or on living persons and cadavers, making the anthropological literature sparse. The greater sciatic notch and the preauricular sulcus of the ilium have both been found to show sexual dimorphism, although studies of these traits often have ambiguous definitions of characteristics and lack the standardization of measurements. This research was designed to reexamine and test the accuracy of standard scoring systems and measurements of the posterior pelvis used to determine sex and to establish new formulae combining traits and measurements to accurately determine sex using logistic regression analysis. A series of metric measurements and morphological scores were recorded for 104 males and 106 females of both European- and African-American ancestry from the William M. Bass and Terry Collections. In order to reexamine previous research conducted on the posterior pelvis, standard ratios of metric measurements were analyzed to determine ranges and cut-off values for males and females in this sample. The ratio of ala width to the maximum transverse diameter of the sacral base and the ratio of the length and width of the sciatic notch have proven to be the most useful ratios in sex determination, though not as accurate as the formulae created using logistic regression. These data were also analyzed in SPSS using logistic regression to assess the usefulness of metric measurements and morphological scores of the posterior pelvis in sex determination. Using step-wise logistic regression, a combination of traits for both the sacrum and posterior ilium that are the most reliable and accurate for sex determination have been determined. The values for these selected traits can be incorporated into the log odds formulas which will classify an individual as male or female.; The ultimate goal of this research was to provide physical anthropologists with logistic regression equations that can be used to estimate the sex of the posterior ilium and sacrum. Two equations ranging in accuracy from 79-84% were developed to determine sex of the posterior pelvis.

Em pleno século XXI cabe a nós educadores, pensadores da Educação, refletirmos sobre novas formas de investimento para a melhoria da qualidade do Ensino. Inúmeras contribuições de naturezas distintas poderiam ser relatadas a fim de contribuir para tal, mas o que proponho nessa investigação é o investimento no que é a essência do humano: o vínculo. Há tempos se sabe sobre a importância das relações interpessoais na constituição do sujeito, mas será que no dia-a-dia das instituições educacionais existe, de fato, um investimento efetivo nesse olhar para dentro de si e para o outro? A escola enquanto espaço público, de primazia coletiva, lida cotidianamente com os vínculos no grupo; o mesmo ocorre em tantos outros ambientes educativos, que propõem projetos sociais, artísticos e esportivos para milhares de crianças e jovens de nosso país. Quantos educadores tiveram a oportunidade de estabelecer um diálogo mais próximo com a psicologia e com a psicanálise durante sua formação? Que conhecimentos puderam construir a respeito dos funcionamentos grupais e das possibilidades de manejar os conflitos e resistências que emergem no grupo? Com referência nas idéias de três autores de base psicanalítica - S. Freud, D. W. Winnicott e R. Kaës - relato e analiso duas experiências vivenciadas em pequenos grupos pertencentes a duas instituições escolares de grande porte. Em A Cortina de Miçangas Musical, compartilho a experiência que vivi como professora, na Escola Vera Cruz. Em A Reabertura da Biblioteca, socializo a experiência vivida junto a um grupo de adolescentes, pais e funcionários da Escola Estadual Salvador Moya, como coordenadora do Projeto Abrace Seu Bairro. Que elementos no manejo grupal podem facilitar ou obstaculizar o nascimento de criações coletivas resultantes do encontro das intersubjetividades de seus integrantes? A reflexão - teórica, prática e sensível - é instrumento essencial para que os sons e os ruídos do grupo, possam ser transformados em música; para que o timbre de cada instrumento (indivíduo) possa aparecer sem encobrir o timbre do outro; para que os músicos dessa orquestra (grupo) possam tocar juntos, ora com melodias mais harmônicas, ora com novos padrões tonais. Reflexão esta: sobre os movimentos do educador, dos alunos e do grupo; sobre a maneira com que os vínculos são estabelecidos no coletivo; sobre os papéis e sobre as tarefas de cada um imerso nessa grupalidade; sobre a presença de uma relação horizontal ou hierarquizada entre seus integrantes; sobre o amadurecimento das relações; sobre a função continente que o grupo pode assumir; sobre a existência ou não do sentimento de pertencimento, enfim, sobre a possibilidade do educador construir um olhar clínico e uma escuta sensível-reflexiva, sobre o grupo, de forma que ele, o grupo, possa ser reconhecido como sujeito da criação.
In the 21st century it is up to us, educators who carry out research, to think about new forms of investments to improve the educational system. In that sense, many contributions of different areas can be reported. However, my proposal in this research is to focus on what is, in my opinion, the essence of humanity: relationships. We have known for a long time of the importance of inter-personal relationships in the formation of the subject. Our question, however, is whether in the daily life of educational institutions there is an effective investment in looking inwards and outwards. The school as a public space, where the concept of group prevails, deals day by day with group links. The same thing occurs in many other educational establishments that have social, artistic and sports activities to thousands of children and teenagers in our country. How many educators have had the opportunity to establish a closer dialogue with psychology and psychoanalysis in their education? What kind of knowledge they were able to form about group functioning and about the possibilities of managing the conflicts and barriers that emerge in a group? Regarding the ideas of three authors of the psychoanalysis school - S. Freud, D. W. Winnicott and R. Kaës - I report and analyze two experiences lived by small groups of two big schools. In The Curtain of Musical Beads I share the experience I have had with my students as a teacher in the Vera Cruz School in kindergarten (first year of the EFI). In the Reopening of the Library I share the experience lived with a group of teenagers, parents and employees of the Salvador Moya State School in my post as coordinator of the project Embrace your Neighborhood. What managing elements can make easier or harder the emergence of collective creativity that results of the interaction of several subjectivities? Thought - whether theoretical, practical and based on sensibility - is a fundamental tool for the sounds and noises of a group to become music; for the tone of each musical instrument (individual) can emerge without concealing the others; for the musicians of this orchestra (group) to be enabled to play together with either more harmonic or with new tonal melodies? What are the movements the educator should follow regarding the students and the group? How the collective links are established? What are the roles and the tasks of each one in the group? Is there a horizontal or hierarchy based relationship among them? What is the connective function that the group may exert? Is there a feeling of belonging to the group? What is the possibility of the educator forming a clinical regard and a sensible-reflexive hearing about the group so that the group itself can be recognized as the subject of the creativity?

Resumo: Objetiva-se investigar, nesta tese, uma possibilidade de articulação entre a teoria do amadurecimento pessoal de Winnicott e a teoria da acontecência (Geschichtlichkeit) de Heidegger. Utiliza-se a noção de paradigma de Kuhn para, no quadro do desenvolvimento histórico da psicanálise, distinguir a psicanálise de Winnicott da psicanálise tradicional (Freud e Klein). Destaca-se que, em relação à tradicional, a winnicottiana promove uma mudança paradigmática em todos os elementos que compõem a matriz disciplinar da teoria psicanalítica. O estabelecimento desta distinção permitiu tomar um dos componentes dessa matriz para tema de estudo, a saber, o componente ontológico. Essa escolha pretende mostrar, por um lado, que a ontologia presente na teoria de Winnicott aproxima-se de um modo de pensar a natureza humana, que é muito próximo às concepções pós-metafísicas de Heidegger, podendo a teoria da acontecência desse filosofo iluminar a compreensão dos elementos ontológicos que compõem a teoria winnicottiana. Por outro lado, esse movimento de aproximação aponta para um distanciamento, que permite notar que a psicanálise de Winnicott apresenta várias questões instigantes e suplementares a uma fenomenologia existencial. A investigação sobre as possíveis aproximações e distanciamentos entre essas duas teorias fez com que se questionasse a localização da psicanálise de Winnicott em relação a um pensamento pós-metafísico e deu margem à discussão sobre as possibilidades de se erigir uma ciência do homem
Abstract: The aim of the present work is to investigate the possibility of establishing a bond between Winnicott's theory of personal maturation and Heidegger's theory of Geschichtlichkeit (historicity). We used Kuhn's notion ofparadigm to distinguish Winnicott's psychoanalysis from traditional psychoanalysis (Freud and KIein) within the framework of historical development of psychoanalysis. What stands out is that in comparison to traditional psychoanalysis, Winnicott's psychoanalysis promotes a paradigm shift in alI elements that compose the disciplinary matrix of psychoanalytical theory. The establishment of that distinction allowed us to singIe out one ofthe components ofthat matrix for our study, i.e., the ontological component. By this choice, we intend to show, on one hand, that the ontology found in Winnicott's theory approaches a way of thinking human nature which is very dose to Heidegger's post-metaphysical conceptions so that his theory appropriation could illurninate the comprehension of the ontological elements that compose Winnicott's theory. On the other hand, that movement of approximation points towards a distancing, which shows that Winnicott's psychoanalysis contains several instigating and additional issues in relation to existential phenomenology. The investigation ofthe possible nearness and farness between those two theories leads us to question Winnicott's psychoanalysis in relation to a post-metaphysical thinking and gave way to the discussion on the possibilities of creating a science of mano

Este trabalho apresenta uma análise das potencialidades da obra Serões de Dona Benta, de Monteiro Lobato, para o Ensino de Ciências. A partir do mapeamento, identificação e análise dos conceitos científicos e da concepção de ciência presente no texto desse livro, explanou-se sobre o uso da literatura de Lobato como material para o Ensino de Ciências. Com o apoio das orientações metodológicas da Análise Textual Discursiva, a obra foi categorizada em temas que se referem a conceitos científicos e a concepções de ciências do autor. Foi possível identificar uma série de situações vividas pelos personagens da história que relatam temas científicos, uma série de conceitos de Física, Química, Biologia, Filosofia das Ciências e a grande maioria com potencial para o Ensino de Ciências. Apresenta-se também uma revisão sobre as principais concepções de ciências na literatura para que se relacione com as encontradas no livro e observa-se que há uma idéia bastante forte de ciência como observação e constatação dos fenômenos da natureza, que se relaciona com uma visão empirista de ciências
This paper presents an analysis of the potential of the book Serões de Dona Benta of Monteiro Lobato, for Teaching Science. From the mapping, identification and analysis of scientific concepts and the development of science in the text of this book, explained to the literature on the use of Lobato as material for Science Education. Which the support of methodological guidelines Discourse Textual Analysis of the work was divided into topics that relate to scientific concepts and conceptions of sciences of the author. It was possible to identify a range of situations experienced by the characters in the story who report scientific issues, a number of concepts in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Philosophy of Science and the most potential for teaching Science. We also present a review of the main concepts in the literature to science that relates to those found in the book and notes that there is a very strong idea of sicence with observation and observation of the phenomena of nature, which relates to a vision empirical science

This study aims to understand the aggressiveness according to the theory of D. W. Winnicott. This is a bibliographic survey, which considers the entire work of the author, and the center has the phenomenon of aggression. Because the object studied here, something fundamental to the constitution within the theory of psychological development, justified the relevance of the dissertation. The author suggested the concept of motility and erotic potential to think the issue of aggression and stands the phenomenon based on the experience of love. Initially, this research found the chronological order in which the author coined his writings about the term aggression. In the second route, the aggression was related to other concepts from Winnicott. The issue of aggression was also seen in the works of S. Freud and M. Klein in order to elucidate other ways in which the phenomenon can be understood within psychoanalysis. With the data obtained, which was sought achieve thoughts about the object here examined and core of the reflections made by the involvement of aggression for the recognition of EU, as proposed in the theory of Winnicott
O presente trabalho visa compreender a agressividade segundo a teoria de D. W. Winnicott. Trata-se de uma investigação que parte de um levantamento bibliográfico, que considera o conjunto da obra do autor, e tem como centro o fenômeno da agressividade. Por ser o objeto aqui estudado, um aspecto fundamental para a constituição psíquica dentro da teoria do amadurecimento, se justifica a relevância da dissertação. O autor postulou o conceito de motilidade e potencial erótico para pensar a questão da agressividade e situou o fenômeno com base na experiência de amor. Num primeiro momento, esta pesquisa considerou a ordem cronológica em que o autor cunhou seus escritos acerca do termo agressividade. No segundo percurso, a agressividade foi relacionada a outros conceitos winnicottianos. O tema da agressividade foi também considerado nas obras de S. Freud e M. Klein com o intuito de elucidar outras vias em que o fenômeno pode ser compreendido dentro da disciplina psicanalítica. Com os dados obtidos, o que se procurou foi atingir reflexões acerca do objeto aqui examinado e o núcleo das reflexões se deu pela implicação da agressividade para o reconhecimento de EU, tal como proposta na teoria de Winnicott

The present research aims at developing a study on the similarities between the character Dona Redonda, in the telenovela Saramandaia (1976/original version and 2013/remake) by Dias Gomes, and the character Bárbara, in the short story Bárbara (1947) by Murilo Rubião, which can be understood as a form of retextualization. The concept of retextualization refers to a type of translation process that emphasizes the creation of a new text from a previous one, bringing the past back to present while promoting future possibilities for the creation of new texts (PLAZA, 2008). Retextualization implies that all forms of text are intersections of different textual bodies, that is, the so-called rewritings or translations which will always establish connections with previous texts. The analysis focuses on identifying and reflecting upon the points that intertwine such works in terms of similarity, by observing the relationship between them, remarkably perceived through the concept of the magical realism, genre shared by both works. This study also intends to reveal in which sense the character Bárbara, by Murilo Rubião, bears similarities to Dona Redonda, in the fictional world of Saramandaia
Este trabalho tem como objetivo desenvolver um estudo sobre as aproximações entre a personagem Dona Redonda da obra Saramandaia (1976/original e 2013/refilmagem), de Dias Gomes, como uma forma de retextualização da personagem Bárbara do conto Bárbara (1947), do autor Murilo Rubião. O conceito de retextualização refere-se a um tipo de processo tradutório cuja ênfase é a criação de um novo texto a partir de um texto prévio, o qual traz o passado para o presente, ao mesmo tempo em que lança possibilidades futuras para construção de novos textos (PLAZA, 2008). A retextualização implica que todas as formas de texto são intersecções de outras faces textuais, isto é, são traduções ou reescritas que dialogam entre si. Dessa forma, a análise proposta pretende identificar e traçar uma reflexão a respeito de questões que unem essas obras por similaridade, observando a relação entre elas expressa principalmente por meio do realismo maravilhoso, gênero que ambas as obras partilham. Este estudo se propõe a estudar de que forma a personagem Bárbara, de Murilo Rubião, se aproxima da personagem Dona Redonda, no mundo ficcional de Saramandaia

O período representativo da Primeira República (1889-1930) significou para o Brasil o esforço de construção de uma ideia de nação e de uma identidade nacional, até então bastante difusos para o brasileiro. Por meio dos livros, didáticos ou não, e por meio de uma cultura escolar nascente, estas ideias passaram a povoar o imaginário popular do estudante e do cidadão brasileiros, fixando símbolos e princípios para a sustentação de um território genuinamente nacional. Neste sentido, o propósito deste estudo concentrou-se em investigar a expressão do conteúdo relacionado à identidade nacional na formação geográfica do estudante de nível primário da escola do período republicano, associando os conhecimentos veiculados pelos livros didáticos utilizados à época aos conhecimentos geográficos expressados na Geografia de Dona Benta (1935) de Monteiro Lobato. Buscando responder às questões que perguntam: “quais são as concepções de conhecimento geográfico expressadas na obra em questão?” e “quais as contribuições da obra para a construção das representações do espaço geográfico e para a produção da identidade nacional no período da Primeira República no Brasil?” desenvolvemos uma análise dos indícios textuais e gráficos trazidos por Lobato na construção da sua Geografia. Partindo do pressuposto de que a experiência funda novas perspectivas, entendemos que a Geografia proposta por Lobato cria novas espacialidades a partir da experiência vivida do espaço pelo leitor, por meio de uma literatura que resgata um poder de criação e de imaginação próprios da língua, subvertendo os padrões da escrita e dos usos da palavra em uma época de intensas e significativas transformações na vida cultural do Brasil. Na sua Geografia desliteraturizada, Lobato cria um novo modo de se relacionar com os espaços...
The representative period of the First Republic (1889-1930) meant to Brazil the effort to build a sense of nation and national identity, hitherto quite diffuse for the brazilian. Through books, textbooks or not, and by means of a spring school culture, these ideas began to populate the popular imagination of students and brazilian citizen, setting symbols and principles for support of a genuinely national territory. In this sense, the purpose of this study focused on investigating the expression of content related to national identity in shaping the geographical student primary school Republican period, combining the knowledge conveyed by textbooks used at the time to the geographical knowledge expressed in Geografia de Dona Benta (1935) by Monteiro Lobato. Seeking to answer the questions they ask: what are the conceptions of geographical knowledge expressed in the work in question? and what are the contributions of the work for the construction of representations of geographic space and the production of national identity in the period of the First Republic in Brazil? develop an analysis of textual and graphic evidence brought by Lobato in the construction of its geography. Assuming that the fundamental experience new perspectives, understand that geography proposed by Lobato creates new spatialities from the experience of space by the reader, through a literature that rescues a power of creation and imagination own language, subverting standards of writing and uses of the word in a time of intense and significant transformations in the cultural life of Brazil. En comparant les techniques de description d’un corpus hétérogène, composé d’Histoire, La bataille de Pharsale de Claude Simon et du Feu des origines d’Emmanuel Dongala, cette recherche a pu établir deux types de rapports observateur –objet observé : subjectif et objectif, corrélés au niveau de l’énonciation à deux types de points de vue. Cette typologie a permis, dans le processus de signification, de définir deux modes d’articulation des structures expressives de l’objet sensible dans le « plan noématique », comme plan probable de l’expression. Ces différents processus ont ainsi conduit à mettre en lumière deux systèmes épistémologiques fondés sur la projection des points de vue et la variation des deixis de l’observation dans la prise en charge des hyper-savoirs dans le discours. Ainsi la variation contradictoire des deixis de l’observation et la résolution de leurs hétérogénéités ont abouti à un point de vue relativiste chez Dongala, alors que la variation non-contradictoire donne lieu à un point de vue constructiviste chez Simon
This study focuses on the speech development and significance of the trial of the sensible object in the interaction subject / object in the literature. By comparing the technical description of a heterogeneous corpus, consisting of Histoire, La bataille de Pharsale of Claude Simon and Le feu des origines of Emmanuel Dongala, this research could establish two types of reports observer / item observed: the subjective one and the objective one, correlated at the utterance to two types of points of view. This typology allowed in the process of signification, define two modes of articulation of expressive structures of the sensible object in the "noematic plan", as the probable level of expression. These processes thus led to highlight two epistemological systems based on the projection of the views and the change in deixis of observation in support of hyper-knowledge in the speech. Thus the contradictory variation deixis observation and solving their heterogeneity resulted in a relativistic perspective in Dongala, while the non-contradictory variation results in a constructivist point of view at Simon

This research analyzes the receiving of poor orphan girls the history of the Dona Placidina Institute of Mogi das Cruzes from 1931 to 1966. The Institute was a primary catholic school created in 1931, to receive poor orphan girls according to the demanded will of a priest of that city. Priest João Lourenço de Siqueira, who left all his estate for the Archdiocese of São Paulo to found the Institution. The Institute, ran by the Sisters of São Vicente de Paulo de Gysegem, along the years, became an important private school in the city and began to receive an important part of the Mogiana elite. In this study I try to understand which social function the supportless childhood started to be taken into account in the Institute, from its foundation until 1966, when the intership was closed - sector which received the orphan girls - and the leaving of the Sisters of São Vicente from the Institute. The research analyzes the acting of different interlocutors who contributed to the conformation of the Institute. For that, I've used as sources, the intern laws of the Institute, the board meeting records, the reports delivered to the Archdiocese, city authors' articles and local newspapers. Inspired by the analyses of the English Historian Edward Palmer Thompson, I tried to understand the importance that the poor orphan childhood acquired in the life of the Institution, inspite of the constant decrease in the number of poor orphan girls received
Esta pesquisa analisa o atendimento de meninas órfãs pobres na trajetória do Instituto Dona Placidina de Mogi das Cruzes de 1931 a 1966. O Instituto era uma escola primária católica criada, em 1931, para atender meninas órfãs pobres em cumprimento as exigências testamentárias de um padre da cidade, Pe João Lourenço de Siqueira, que deixou todos os seus bens para que a Arquidiocese de São Paulo fundasse a Instituição. O Instituto, administrado pelas Irmãs de São Vicente de Paulo de Gysegem, ao longo dos anos, tornou-se uma importante escola particular da cidade e passou a atender parte importante das filhas da elite mogiana. Neste estudo busco compreender qual a função social que a infância desvalida passou a desempenhar no Instituto, da sua fundação até 1966, ano que marca o fechamento do internato - setor que atendia as órfãs - e a saída das Irmãs de São Vicente do Instituto. A pesquisa analisa a atuação dos diferentes interlocutores que contribuíram para a conformação da Instituição. Para isso, utilizei como fontes os estatutos do Instituto, as atas das reuniões de diretoria, os relatórios encaminhados para a Arquidiocese, crônicas de autores da cidade e jornais de circulação local. Inspirado nas análises do historiador inglês Edward Palmer Thompson busquei compreender a centralidade que a infância órfã pobre adquiriu na vida da Instituição, apesar da constante diminuição do número de meninas órfãs pobres atendidas

Se situant dans l’histoire immédiate, la littérature africaine contemporaine participe de la dénonciation de la violence des régimes postcoloniaux et des guerres civiles. Ce sont des nouvelles formes d’écriture caractérisées à la fois par l’urgence et par l’intention de s’éloigner des formes européennes, donnant lieu à une expression universelle et à la revendication du roman comme œuvre d’art. Cette contribution se propose, à partir de neufs romans francophones, anglophones et hispanophones publiés entre 1990 et 2000, d’explorer et d’analyser la réinsertion de la femme africaine subsaharienne dans les archives officielles. À travers des témoignages fictionnels inspirés des faits réels et des histoires relevant de la sphère privée, ces auteur(e)s créent un nouvel imaginaire sur la femme africaine évoluant entre violence et résistance. Par une approche interdisciplinaire, nous tenterons d’identifier les images de la femme dans ces romans, ainsi que les moyens stylistiques et langagiers dans le processus de la réinterprétation des archives et de la réinsertion de la femme africaine subsaharienne dans l’Histoire
In relation to the immediate history, contemporary African literature contributes to the denunciation of the violence of postcolonial regimes and civil wars. These new forms of writing are characterized both by the urgency and by the intention to move away from European forms, giving rise to a universalizing writing and the claim of the novel as a work of art. This contribution is proposed, from nine Francophone, Anglophone and Hispanophone novels published between 1990 and 2000, to explore and analyse the reintegration of Sub-Saharan African women in the official archives. Through fictional testimonies inspired by real facts and stories of the private sphere, these authors create a new imagination about African women evolving between violence and resistance. Through an interdisciplinary approach, we will try to identify the images of the woman in these novels, as well as the stylistic and linguistic means in the process of the reinterpretation of the archives and the reintegration of the African Sub-Saharan woman in history
En relación a la historia inmediata, la literatura africana contemporánea contribuye a la denuncia de la violencia de los regímenes poscoloniales y de las guerras civiles. Estas nuevas formas de escritura se caracterizan tanto por la urgencia de escribir como por la intención de alejarse de las formas de expresión europeas, dando lugar a una escritura universal y a la reivindicación de la novela como obra de arte. Esta contribución se propone de explorar y analizar la reintegración de las mujeres africanas subsaharianas a los archivos oficiales, a partir de nueve novelas de expresión francesa, inglesa y española, publicadas entre 1990 y 2000. A través de testimonios ficticios inspirados por hechos reales e historias de la vida privada, estos autores y autoras crean una nueva imagen de las mujeres africanas desenvolviéndose entre la violencia y la resistencia. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar a relação entre história, literatura e construção permanente da identidade a partir do corpus literário escolhido - Vinte e Zinco do moçambicano Mia Couto, Dona Pura e os Camaradas de Abril do cabo-verdiano Germano Almeida, e Vale a Pena Ter Esperança do português Carlos Brito, que fazem parte da Coleção Caminhos de Abril do Editorial Caminho, que comemorou o vigésimo quinto aniversário do fim do Estado Novo português. A Revolução dos Cravos pôs fim ao regime salazarista, que oprimiu portugueses e africanos por quase meio século e que deixou suas marcas até a atualidade, interferindo na constituição da identidade cultural dos sujeitos envolvidos neste processo. Essa análise enfatiza a interação, por muitas vezes conflituosa, entre culturas tão diversas como a portuguesa e a africana, recorrendo a Homi Bhabha (1998), Stuart Hall (2003) e Edward Said (1995). Para compreendermos as particularidades do imperialismo português, utilizamos Margarida Calafate Ribeiro (2003), Boaventura de Sousa Santos (1999) e Eduardo Lourenço (1978, 1994 e 1999).
El presente trabajo analiza la relación entre historia, literatura y construcción permanente de la identidad, partiendo del corpus literario elegido - Vinte e Zinco del mozambicano Mia Couto, Dona Pura e os Camaradas de Abril del cabo verdiano Germano Almeida y Vale a Pena Ter Esperança del portugués Carlos Brito, las cuáles forman parte da Coleção Caminhos de Abril del Editorial Caminho, la cuál conmemora el vigésimo quinto cumpleaños del fin del Estado Novo portugués. La Revolución de los Claveles terminó con el régimen salazarista, que oprimió portugueses y africanos por casi medio siglo, y que dejó sus marcas hasta la actualidad, interfiriendo en la constitución de la identidad cultural de los sujetos envueltos en este proceso. Este análisis enfatiza la interacción por muchas veces conflictiva entre culturas tan diversas como son la portuguesa y la africana, recurriendo a Homi Bhabha (1998), Stuart Hall (2003) y Edward Said (1995). The 2016 presidential election and restrictive immigration policies implemented under the Trump administration created a climate of heightened tension and uncertainty for undocumented immigrants from Latin America. There is a gap in the psychological literature regarding the mental health of undocumented immigrants from Latin America residing in the U.S., the largest number of which reside in California, and few studies have examined the experiences of mental health clinicians conducting therapy with undocumented immigrants, particularly keeping in mind the impact of national policy agendas that fuel anti-immigrant sentiment. Following Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) methodology, this study gathered first-person narratives from 15 mental health professionals who work with undocumented immigrants from Latin American in California, with a focus on the effect of change in political leadership following the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Nine domains emerged from the analysis. Mental health clinicians reported that the 2016 election had a significant impact on their work, including client’s distress and the clinician’s own emotional response to the political climate. Themes in therapy following the election, challenges to conducting therapy with undocumented clients, and the risk and protective factors that were reported to have the greatest influence on client mental health are discussed. Clinical implications and recommendations for the provision of mental health services to undocumented immigrants from Latin America are offered, including a separate set of recommendations for supporting mental health clinicians who provide mental health services to undocumented immigrants from Latin America.

O presente trabalho tem como objectivo principal dissertar sobre a jeremíada americana, procurando compreender a sua expressão na contemporaneidade através da análise da utilização do seu modelo argumentativo em dois discursos presidenciais, nomeadamente os primeiros discursos inaugurais de Barack Obama e Donald Trump. Neste sentido, é desenvolvido um enquadramento em relação à expressão americana da jeremíada, no qual são abordadas as suas origens, as suas características e as transformações que a sua estrutura discursiva foi sofrendo ao longo do tempo. São, ainda, apresentados e desenvolvidos os elementos temáticos centrais ao discurso inaugural, juntamente com a sua importância política e simbólica. É tido, igualmente, em consideração o contexto de enunciação de ambos os discursos, pelo que são caracterizadas as corridas eleitorais de 2008 e de 2016, assim como analisados os percursos políticos, as imagens públicas, as mensagens de campanha e as vitórias de Obama e de Trump. Estabelecida a base teórica necessária ao estudo dos discursos em questão, o presente trabalho analisa a utilização por parte de ambos do modelo discursivo da jeremíada americana e compara o modo como a estrutura argumentativa desta foi adaptada à agenda política de cada orador, em particular ao discurso focado na esperança, mudança e união de Obama e ao discurso populista nacionalista de Trump. É, então, demonstrada a capacidade de adaptação da estrutura retórica da jeremíada a variados contextos e o modo como ambos os presidentes, ao recorrerem a este instrumento político de coesão e controlo social, recuperam mecanismos de questionamento e definição identitários centrais à construção de uma identidade nacional e do ideal simbólico da América.
This dissertation aims to revisit the American jeremiad and understand its expression in the contemporary world through the study of the use of its argumentative model in two presidential speeches, namely Barack Obama’s and Donald Trump’s first inaugural addresses. To this purpose, a framework is developed regarding the expression of the American jeremiad, in which its origins, its characteristics and the transformations its discursive structure underwent over the years are addressed. Additionally, the central thematic elements of the inaugural address are presented and developed, together with the genre’s political and symbolic importance. The context of enunciation of both Obama’s and Trump’s addresses is also taken into consideration. Hence, the 2008 and 2016 presidential elections’ most relevant events are outlined and both Obama’s and Trump’s political paths, public personas, campaign messages and victories are also discussed. Having established the necessary theoretical basis, this study analyzes the use both selected addresses made of the American jeremiad’s discursive model and compares the way in which its argumentative structure was adapted to the political agenda of each speaker, focusing on Obama's message of hope, change and union and Trump's rhetoric of national populism. This examination and comparison help to demonstrate the adaptability of the American jeremiad’s rhetorical structure, as well as how both presidents, by resorting to the jeremiad as a political instrument of social cohesion and control, recover questioning and identity defining mechanisms central to the construction of a national character and the symbolic ideal of America.

In a time of extreme political polarization in America, it is necessary to understand how political attitudes are shaped and how and why political perspectives shift. This study explored political polarization and the search for common ground among American voters in order to evaluate 1) political orientation and associations with current and shifting political attitudes, perceptions, behaviors, and learning; 2) political efficacy and associations with political participation; 3) contributions of individual events, experiences, sources and/or social interactions to shifting political perspectives; and 4) the potential role of observational learning and experiential learning as it relates to political attitudinal change. Through a mixed-methods design, this study utilized both quantitative and qualitative methods in two phases in anticipation of the November 2020 U.S. presidential election. First, a survey was administered nationwide on Facebook in July and August of 2020. Second, a small number of participants that indicated that their political views had shifted during the Trump presidency were interviewed in October 2020 to discover more in-depth responses regarding both the formation and shifts of their political ideologies and attitudes. Quantitative statistical analysis from the survey (n = 1,313) revealed that 1) political orientation was significantly associated with a variety of current and shifting political attitudes, political participation, cognitive perceptions and emotions, social media and news media usage, and learning; and 2) personal and collective political efficacy was significantly associated with increased political participation. Qualitative analysis from the semi-structured interviews (n = 16) utilizing the Framework Method indicated that 1) social interactions with role models and media sources informed shifts in political attitudes, especially in regard to family; 2) deeper understandings of shifting political attitudes emerged when viewed through the observational learning subprocesses of attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation; 3) shifting political attitudes were associated with cognitive perceptions and emotions of partisan ingroups and partisan outgroups; 4) deeper understandings of shifting political attitudes emerged when viewed through the experiential learning stages of returning to the experience, attending to emotions, and re-evaluating the experience; and 5) barriers to shifting political attitudes were related to the cognitive perceptions of reason and emotion, whereas rewards for shifting political attitudes were related to increased political participation and learning. The study’s conclusions reaffirmed that there is widespread political polarization in the United States but that there are certain pathways towards common ground through civility and respect, intentional listening, and through the sharing of personal and emotional stories and lived experiences. Those who did shift their views shared an openness to learning through the observation of role models and sources (e.g., family, friends, mentors or teachers, religious leaders, media) and through reflection on past experiences. Aspects of political common ground were obtained not by agreeing on a contentious issue, but by acknowledging that multiple sides of an argument could be valid. It’s about how we approach the problem rather than how we solve the problem. Political orientation is much more complex than the dichotomous portrayal of left versus right.

This investigation centred on the perception and subjective interpretation of the artistic work, which is closely related to the experience of the spectator. My analysis thus focused on the spectator’s physical and perceptual interaction with specific works, which was activated by the effects of reflection. Reflection is considered in the theoretical and philosophical writings of Merleau-Ponty and Jacques Lacan as a fundamental element in the construction of the identity and ego consciousness of each individual. I therefore analyse the impact of the theories of both philosophers on the conceptual approach to artistic production in the 20th and 21st centuries. The artworks mentioned here have in common the deepening of the collective perceptual experience. In these sculptural environments or installations each spectator constructs his or her perceptual experience of space from the interaction with others. Space is understood here as real space, including both architecture and nature. Reflection is in this investigation also approached from the technical and methodological point of view of the sculpture. In this case, it results from a combination of materials that were specifically designed and prepared by the artists to create the most diverse reflecting surfaces. Finally, a selection of original studies, experiments and sculptures is presented in the final chapter. They were conceived during this master's degree and stemmed from my experiences with reflection. The final chapter highlights two sculptural works and the conceptual process that preceded their production. It also emphasises the relationship between my artistic practice and all the research and investigation developed within the scope of this project.

Esta tese analisa a possibilidade de se considerar letras de música como poemas. Para defender esta possibilidade começa-se por tentar perceber como identificamos poesia e, apoiado na ideia de Stanley Fish de que um poema é criado pela sua interpretação, analisam-se alguns textos de Bob Dylan sob uma teoria particular, no caso a teoria da dicção pura , de Donald Davie. Consciente de que esta abordagem deixa de fora a questão central, nomeadamente a música, analisa-se a relação entre música e poesia e a forma como esta se estabeleceu historicamente, chegando à conclusão de que, na análise de uma letra de música, o objecto central não pode ser apenas o texto, mas sim a performance. Os dois capítulos finais analisam, respectivamente, os problemas decorrentes de considerar o objecto de análise a performance e a possibilidade de, através da aproximação a problemáticas levantadas por Stanley Cavell a propósito de análises de filmes, conceber uma nova abordagem crítica a estes textos.
This work analyses the possibility of looking at music lyrics as poems. In order to do so, we begin with considerations on how to recognise poetry and, based on Stanley Fish's idea that interpretations create the poem, we explore a corpus of Bob Dylan's works under Donald Davie's theory of pure diction . Aware that this does not account for the absence of the music in the analysis of the texts, we establish a study of the historical relation between music and poetry, from which we conclude that the central object of analysis cannot be the text alone but the performance itself. The last two chapters consider the problems that arise from analysing the performance of a song as such while aiming at a new critical approach to Dylan's texts, drawn from Stanley Cavell's philosophical queries, as far as film is concerned.

Combining analyses of primary documents housed at American, Russian and Czech archives, and employing industrial analysis, market analysis, and analytical tools developed in reception studies, this thesis examines Hollywood's post-war operations in Eastern Europe, the strategies that were employed to advance them, and the responses of the indigenous film industries of Eastern Europe to them. While scholars examining Hollywood's post-war international activities have focused on western European markets, arguing that they were of supreme importance to Hollywood, this thesis shows that Eastern Europe was also central to Hollywood's post-war economic agenda. The major Hollywood studios, I argue, were, as early as 1944, drawing up highly ambitious plans to become the dominant player on Eastern European markets, including the Soviet market, and were working to prevent the Soviet film industry from expanding into Western Europe. Sitting at the border of East and West, the small country of Czechoslovakia played a key role in what this thesis calls Hollywood's Soviet Sphere Project. By revealing the extent to which expansion into Eastern Europe was central to Hollywood's short-, medium- and long-term economic objectives, this thesis offers new insight into Hollywood's domestic and international conduct during the...

In this Master in Sculpture Studies we try to expose and analyze the question of space in sculpture, from the beginning of modernism to the present day, mentioning some close previous situations and following R. Krauss logic of expanded space in sculpture. In this sense, we look to a better understanding of how to transit from a closed space to a negative one, through the history of sculpture of the 20th century. Externalism is the idea that the content of mental states is externally constituted. In this thesis I first consider and compare the philosophies of Davidson and Heidegger. I argue that both philosophers give similarly radical versions of externalism in which the contents of mental states are holistically and externally determined in terms of a unified structure that includes the individual, others and the objects and events about which they communicate. A common objection to externalism is the argument that if mental content is externally determined a person cannot have first person authority over the content of their own minds. I argue that in Heidegger first person authority is the result of the holistically unified structure of being-in-the-world. Further, I argue, with Davidson, that the objection that externalism is incompatible with first person authority relies on reinstating internalist models of mental content. I go on to defend Davidson's account of first person authority from some of the objections made in the philosophical literature. In discussing issues relating to first person authority I argue that although first person authority is compatible with externalism it cannot be understood in terms of a subject having privileged access to mental entities. First person authority is a formal condition of the holistic nature of the mental. This is apparent in two ways; firstly, when a person makes a statement about their mental states part of the content of that statement is constituted in terms of the same objects and events in the external world - what the mental state is about - that determine the content of the mental state. Secondly, first person authority is an outcome of the holistic nature of the mental - a person has first person authority over their mental states in virtue the fact that because the mental is holistically constituted any mental state is constituted in terms of the person's other mental states. It is clear that radical externalism undermines elements of the traditional way of thinking about mental content, the subject-object distinction and the self. I finally, briefly, suggest how radical externalism may cause a revision in our understanding of the self.

The project in development here consists on an investigation through the art field boundaries, more precisely, in painting and sculpture. It is born as a reflection of the technological society that the artist wants to represent and is based on three formal characteristics: geometry, colour and dimension (bidimensionality/ tridimensionality). The conjugation of these three elements, not only leads to various theoretical contexts, which are absolutely needed to understand the primary aim of this thesis, but serves the purpose of showing this thread’s timeliness when compared to the contemporary art panorama. The practical research bases itself on a simple work method, described along the dissertation precisely through the order in which the chapters appear. Reality is decoded through a bi-dimensional exercise that turns later into a three-dimensional reality. That reality creates an immersive space where the presence of the spectator seems to relate again everything to an experience where image takes place, bi-dimensionality again

This thesis is a study of the shifting philosophical trends in the works of Samuel Beckett, Donald Barthelme, and Kurt Vonnegut as representations of a greater shift from modernism to postmodernism. I have chosen to explore Beckett's plays Waiting for Godot and Krapp's Last Tape, Barthelme's short stories "Nothing: A Preliminary Account," "The New Music," and "Kierkegaard Unfair to Schlegal," and Vonnegut's book Timequake to see how each author seeks to find a new hope in the face of a collapsed causal system. This work is an examination of the form and content of each author's work as it pertains to their own philosophical standing and in relation to the other two authors' works. I argue that each author finds a different hope for humanity depending on their place among the philosophical trends during their time.

Steven Millhauser has been recognized for his abilities as both a novelist and a writer of short fiction. Yet, he has evaded definitive categorization because his fiction does not fit into any one category. Millhauser’s fiction has defied clean categorization specifically because of his regular oscillation between the modes of realism and fantasy. Much of Millhauser’s short fiction contains images of labyrinths: wandering narratives that appear to split off or come to a dead end, massive structures of branching, winding paths and complex mysteries that are as deep and impenetrable as the labyrinth itself. This project aims to specifically explore the presence of labyrinthine elements throughout Steven Millhauser’s short fiction. Millhauser’s labyrinths are either described spatially and/or suggested in his narrative form; they are, in other words, spatial and/or discursive. Millhauser’s spatial labyrinths (which I refer to as ‘architecture’ stories) involve the lengthy description of some immense or underground structure. The structures are fantastic in their size and often seem infinite in scale. These labyrinths are quite literal. Millhauser’s discursive labyrinths demonstrate the labyrinthine primarily through a forking, branching and repetitive narrative form. Millhauser’s use of the labyrinth is at once the same and different than preceding generations of short fiction. Postmodern short fiction in the 1960’s and 70’s used labyrinthine elements to draw the reader’s attention to the story’s textuality. Millhauser, too, writes in the experimental/fantastic mode, but to different ends. The devices of metafiction and realism are employed in his short fiction as agents of investigating and expressing two competing visions of reality. Using the ‘tricks’ and techniques of postmodern metafiction in tandem with realistic detail, Steven Millhauser’s labyrinthine fiction adjusts and reapplies the experimental short story to new ends: real-world applications and thematic expression.
