The objectives of this paper are three folds: firstly, to highlight the studies which have used documentary film as authentic input in teaching second language skills, secondly to review the studies which have used documentary film in enhancing the second language writing skill, and lastly to offer ways to deal with documentary film in improving Arabic as a Second Language (ASL) writing skill. For this purpose, the paper analyses related literature review and previous studies in the field. The literature review shows the concern of second language practitioners as well as scholars in the field in using documentary film in the learning process. However, studies related to ASL are very scarce. There are four steps to be adopted for the purpose of linking documentary film input with enhancing writing skills output. The paper also highlights the strengths of documentary film as authentic input in language teaching as well as putting forth some technical advice and suggestions to improve the selection of teaching materials. Keywords: TASL, teaching material, Arabic for specific purposes, Arabic writing skill, authentic inputCite as: Tg Abdul Rahman, T.A.F, Chik, A.R., Sahrir, M.S., & Nordin, M.S. (2017). The interwar period was an important time in the history of Polish documentary writing. The poetics of the genre was formed at the turn of the 1920s and 30s. At that time, there was a debate about the cognitive and aesthetic values of documentary writing. A variety of thematic forms quickly emerged, including works about foreign countries. This subgenre had two main variants: the „exotic documentary” (or „exotic-adventure”) and „sociopolitical documentary”. The present article examines a selection of texts representing both the variants and written by: Ferdynand Goetel, Zbigniew Uniłowski, Aleksander Janta-Połczyński, Ksawery Pruszyński, Melchior Wańkowicz, Antoni Słonimski, Zygmunt Nowakowski and others.

The technical elements of writing have proved to be essential when establishing a serious and definitive assessment of documentary form - specifically jis external characteristics - and tradition. One of these technical elements is the angle of writing. This paper is meant as a first approach to the issue, which, it is our opinion, places the angle of writing, as well as its assessment, in the foreground of documentary criticism considered as tradition.

A new arena of Interactive Documentary production is thriving, and critics and scholars are taking note. Within this field, there is less attention to new opportunities and new theoretical challenges for live practices within the documentary sphere. This thesis argues for a fuller conceptualization of Live Documentary practice. First, it questions the current state of assumptions about documentary, as a form related to the 'document,' as a particularly film-leaning form, and as a lasting and historicizing form of discourse. Next, it examines the historical underpinnings of two forms of live documentary practice and exemplar projects of each: Live Performance Documentary and Live Subject Documentary. The former is situated in the media category of live theater and performance, and the second, the author will argue, is an instantiation of television in its earliest configuration as a device for two-way audio-visual communications and not just unidirectional broadcasting. The study concludes by positing a third medium-specific form of live documentary native to the computer, the Live Data Documentary. This final, more speculative form is defined by drawing on the meanings of 'liveness' examined in the previous chapters and the history of real time computing to generate a suggested framing for computer-native live documentary practice.

Resumo:
Time, Rhythm and Magic: developing a Communications Theory approach to Documentary Film Editing is principally concerned with the editing of documentary films, in particular the historical documentary. The essence of the study draws upon a reflective experiential analysis of the author’s extensive creative practice in documentary film production, with particular reference to the principles and techniques the author employs in documentary editing. The research argues that the process of constructing certain forms of documentary film involves the selection of small segments, or samples, taken from a whole and re-assembled into a reductive representation of that whole. The author finds that useful analogies can be drawn between this process in documentary film editing and the process of sampling, encoding and re-construction inherent in digital telecommunication systems. The study also argues that a central component of both processes is the sharing and manipulation of temporal elements, and that although these manipulations are a crucial determinant of the cohesion and flow of a finished documentary film, they are invisible to the viewer. The documentary film editor is thus able to create convincing illusions which the audience perceives as reality—a creative process which might thus be described as a form of ‘magic’.

This research takes place among some documentary practices in the contemporary Italian field : Michelangelo Frammartino, Gianni Celati, Pietro Marcello… Studied as specific methods of mediation and writing in the middle of many others organizing today’s medial world, these experiences reveal us their specific ecological status. We refer to a general ecology (socio-political, perceptive and symbolic) : the one that has been defined by thinkers like Felix Guattari, Tim Ingold or Bruno Latour. Devoted to an empirical dwelling as much as to an interactive attention towards our environments, these documentary creations record, question and narrate the entanglement of presences composing our milieux. Despite a fundamental cinematic interest (first of all for Michelangelo Frammartino), the theories and the exemples taken into account allow us to define a category of « documentary » capable of including other medial forms like literature (through Gianni Celati, above all) or theatre on the basis of a commun technical exploration of the environments we dwell in. Between the lines of such an ecological and trans-medial concept of documentary we spot the landmarks of a more sustainable and attentive way of living the multilayered environments (« natural » as well as social, technical and semiotic) in which we are always already involved. Such an alternative way of living begins with other storytellings and other perceptions of what surrounds us that we will call « counter-fictions »

As a biographical documentary concept develops, its intention and its form are impacted and may be transformed by market demands. The documentary idea about the life of Xavier Herbert has been in development through a number of iterations within the shifting landscape of the Australian documentary industry from the mid- 1990s to 2009. This study is, on the one hand, an endeavour to find a workable way to express and practise the multi-layered complexity of creative work, a long-form documentary script on Herbert, an Australian literary icon. On the other hand, this thesis represents a cumulative research exercise, whereby my own experiences in the documentary industry in Queensland, Australia and overseas are analysed in an effort to enlighten the broader documentary community about such a complex, even labyrinthine, process.

This paper analyzes two documents from the Jesuit mission to Japan, both written by Luís Fróis (1532-1597). They discuss the same topic: the conversion to Christianity of a young nobleman from Bungo (Kyushu) in 1577. One is an epistle and the other deals with historic issues. The comparison reveals the peculiarities of each genre, in line with the norms of the Society of Jesus. The paper concludes that epistles were considered to strengthen spiritual and identity links, as a result of which they were widely disseminated during the 16th century.

AbstractThis chapter examines three recent autofictional documentaries produced in Argentina and Spain—Albertina Carri’s Cuatreros (Rustlers), Mercedes Álvarez’s Mercado de futuros (Futures Market), and Víctor Erice’s Vidros partidos (Broken Windows)—which share a distinctive “archival impulse.” These films propose a meaning in a specific political sense which we read in relation to the contexts of the Iberian financial crisis and the memories of political violence during the last dictatorship in Argentina. We address the autofictional strategies through which the filmmakers “re-stage” the archive by adopting an aesthetics of ambiguity that unsettles the modern paradigm of the archive as static evidence of a given reality, revolving instead around a conception of the archive as a self-reflective process that becomes the subject matter in its own right.

The essay aims to develop a questionnaire for the study of the accounting records of late medieval rural lordships, combining the problems and methods of medievalist historiography and diplomatics. Firstly, the textual types and functions of accounting records are analysed, dividing them into income lists and officers’ accounts and observing their evolution in the light of the general transformations of documentary writing during the late Middle Ages. A detailed analysis of the parallels between seigniorial accounts and the accounts of the central powers is then carried out, with particular attention to north-western Italy.

The essay focuses on the modalities adopted by Magris in his novel, Alla cieca, to merge literature and civil engagement through a fine narrative construction. By populating his writing with precise documentary research and taking advantage of the possibilities of invention, the author succeeds in giving voice to minimum destinies of History and save their high moral lesson. This can also be seen through a comparative reading of the pages of the novel dealing with Tito’s gulag, Goli Otok, and Scotti’s book, which is a historical reconstruction provided by witnesses of the events suffered by Italians who lived there.

The Slovenian-Bosnian poet, writer, essayist, literary critic, translator and editor Josip Osti (1945–2021) was born in Sarajevo, lived and worked in Slovenia since 1990. Being a recognized poet in his homeland, writing in Croatian, one of the largest translators of Slovenian literature into Serbo-Croatian, since 1997 he has been writing in Slovenian. The transcultural aspects of Josip Osti’s literary works, both poetry collections and novels, are a unique phenomenon. In our study, we turned to the novels of Josip Osti, namely his trilogy — Ghosts of the House of Heinrich Böll (2016), In Front of the Mirror (2016) and Life is a Creepy Fairy Tale (2019). All three works have a strong (auto)biographical component and form a special novel form, which the author calls the “kaleidoscope-mosaic” novel. The latter has a fragmented structure and consists of short stories, life stories, anecdotes, urban legends, essayistic notes, literary-critical digressions, lyrical passages, diary entries, etc. In Osti’s novels, we also find a connection with the tradition of short prose in Bosnian-Herzegovina literature, in particular, with the works of the 1990s by such authors as M. Jergović, D. Karahasan, N. Veličković, K. Zaimović and others. Their texts are characterized by a destabilized genre form, a mosaic narrative, personal and documentary evidence, and a palimpsest narrative model. The kaleidoscopic structure of Osti’s prose texts helps him to reflect the transcultural view characteristic of his intimate and artistic world, to embrace the complex overlap of heterogeneous elements. The novels are written in Slovene, but they are mainly devoted to the space of Sarajevo, the unique multicultural atmosphere of this city, as well as the tragedy unfolding in it; thus, the writer complements the so-called “Sarajevo text”, but already in the field of Slovenian literature, artistically comprehending the interconnectedness of Bosnia and Slovenia. My argument is that the history of space can be built by montage. I'm a documentary filmmaker and editor. I understand film as a support for writing in fragments. I think that the filmic form, capable of carrying movements and times, testimonies and texts, past and present, is a suitable support for the history of space. There is a visual form of knowledge and a wisdom of the gaze, as in Warburg's Atlas, largely disregarded by the academy as a way of producing knowledge. If montage is a polyphonic device that uses forgotten remains and heterogeneous narrations to dismantle the official story and reassemble another story from its critical constellations, no instrument seems to me more adequate than a film to execute it. Through the search for other ways of narrating the urban experience, following Benjamin from the rags and the residues, operating knowledge from the anarchic potentialities of the fragment and the problematization through doubt, through the incomplete and through the unfinished. For Didi-Huberman, the empirical and creative exercise proposed by Benjamin is capable of bringing out other possibilities from the dismantling of certainties. It allows us to think through the differences in the gaps left between the fragments. The montage allows for the simultaneity of times and the emergence of symptoms, the revelation of failures, conflicts, heterogeneity, in perforating tradition and colliding with the text. If montage serves all this, it also serves the decolonization of perspectives and methodologies, serves to narrate the history of subalterns and the hidden histories of empires. It also can be used to articulate memory, narration and history in the attempt to grasp reality. I propose the use of cinematographic montage as a method of knowledge production, as an important part of the research and whose result will be a constitutive and inseparable part of the thesis. Film as a method for the social sciences. In addition to assembling the fragments, the author's narrative interference is a critical point of the proposed experience. Delivering an account of the position from which one narrates is, therefore, fundamental. The narration does not impose itself as a voice of God over the material, as it neither affirms nor has certainties. It is organized on the incompleteness of the process. The narration sheds light on the background of the painting, on what History disregarded, on what was considered disposable or unimportant by the discourse of the dominator. It is thinking through differences and from the cracks of what was enunciated by the authority. It is thinking from accidents and ghosts.I propose the integration of the result of film montage experience in the general organization of the thesis, so that the chapters can vary between the two supports, text and film, being organized according to what the material itself indicates.

Research on old Romanian texts, religious or non-religious translations, original writings underlying acts of culture or administrative records, documentary sources authored by Romanians or foreigners (missionaries or mere travellers fascinated by various aspects of Romanian space) brings to the foreground a significant number of toponyms for anyone interested in this onomastic variety. The toponyms in question mainly include names of settlements, provinces, and countries, as well as names of important landforms, most of which are real and can be located. Often recorded as phonetic variants linked to different geographical areas or stages in the evolution of language or influenced by the graphical form of their source and one’s knowledge of the Romanian language, thus with morphological and lexical structures determined by the adaptation, translation or calque of a toponym from a foreign language, many place names recorded are linked to the same referent. Therefore, they are genuine toponymic synonyms. Depending on the type of source, place names in old Romanian texts illustrate a model or cultural attitude, while they may also provide useful information regarding the administrative constraints manifested in specific historical ages or in several provinces of Dacoromanian space.

The article subjects to observation some coordinates of Chisinau’s musical life over the course of about a hundred years after the annexation of Bessarabia to the Russian Empire. The sources that served as documentary support for achieving this goal are: historical, literary, and scientific writings, sketches, notes, travel memoirs of some people, passing through our lands, testimonies little known or more difficult to reach the reader. From the synthesis of the most eloquent data and information, inserted in the reference sources, we try to outline a general picture of music in the administrative center of Moldavia on the left bank of the Prut during the years 1812- 1918. The view, resulting from the reconstruction of the musical landscape in the researched urban environment, offers a rich palette of events. Following the chronology of the presence of music in society, we highlight its main forms of expression, including folk music, music of boyar salons (fashionable), religious music, military music, concert activities, musical-theatrical performances. Through the prism of the musical components recorded within the specified time interval, we identify different styles, influences, artistic tastes, as well as the share of music in the urban society. We also draw attention to the social functions that music fulfilled in the Chisinau cultural environment at that time. The undertaken radiography leads us to the finding that European music is beginning to gain more and more ground for assertion in the cultural life of Chisinau with a wider openness to Western civilization and the assimilation of new artistic forms of manifestation.

The controversial and in many ways mysterious history of the Bender Fortress – one of the largest fortified complexes in the Black Sea region – has long attracted the attention of specialists in various fields of historical sciences. However, due to the fact that the fortress continued to be used according to its original destination (part of the territory is still occupied by a military garrison, in 2008 the complex was partially opened for visits), full field research began only in last years. The Tigina-Bender fortification was gradually formed and developed throughout the medieval and modern periods. The site occupies a vast territory, fortified with earth and stone bastions, adjacent to the bank of the Dniester a rectangular stone citadel. Its origin is uncertain, but the development stages could be recognized by the architectural elements. Authors of this paper based on the available sources, they try to re-evaluate the dating, architecture and history of the fortification system at Tigina-Bender. Only a few written sources have proven to be the cornerstone of the official history of Tigina Castle and Bender Fortress. These are the memoirs of the Turkish traveler Evliya Celebi, who visited Bender in 1655, naming Mimar Sinan, who accompanied the sultan in his campaign to punish the Moldavian ruler Petru Rareș, the city’s architect, in 1538. Construction of the complex. The construction of the Bender fortress by the Turkish architect should be called into question due to the numerous historical information, in which there are no reports of the construction of a castle in Tigina after 1538, espe cially considering the mentions of the locality long before this year. The history of Tigina Castle, built on the banks of the Dniester and known from the writings of contemporaries in the period before the sixteenth century, when according to other historical accounts received the new name, in the twentieth century was replaced by scientific opinion with that of the fortress. Bender. This „change of origins” has been accepted by most historians, due to the method of study: the exclusive use of documentary information and selective and total trust in the content of texts, neglecting the research of documents with other information, to which is added the scarcity of published documents regarding Tigina and Bender. In the case of the use of the fortress after the original destination and insistence of the historians who supported the Turkish origin of the Bender fortress, claiming material evidence of the fortress’s antiquity for a long time was not possible. The interdisciplinary research of the fortified complex Tigina-Bender, at the intersection between architecture, archeology, history and geography would allow the creation of the correct evaluation of the cultural heritage monument. Of great importance, for solving complex problems in the history of architecture are archaeological research, analysis of old maps and plans, which, as a whole, are invaluable sources on the history, geography and toponymy of the Northwest Black Sea region, studied so far in fragments. The complex analysis of the architecture of the Bender fortress, whose complete study has not yet been completed, confirms the hypotheses identified during the preliminary historical, cartographic and archaeological research regarding the presence at Tigina of the fortification prior to the conquest by the Ottoman Porte.

Hall, Mark, e Neil Price. Medieval Scotland: A Future for its Past. Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, setembro de 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.09.2012.165.

The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings. Underpinning all five areas is the recognition that human narratives remain crucial for ensuring the widest access to our shared past. There is no wish to see political and economic narratives abandoned but the need is recognised for there to be an expansion to more social narratives to fully explore the potential of the diverse evidence base. The questions that can be asked are here framed in a national context but they need to be supported and improved a) by the development of regional research frameworks, and b) by an enhanced study of Scotland’s international context through time. 1. From North Britain to the Idea of Scotland: Understanding why, where and how ‘Scotland’ emerges provides a focal point of research. Investigating state formation requires work from Medieval Scotland: a future for its past ii a variety of sources, exploring the relationships between centres of consumption - royal, ecclesiastical and urban - and their hinterlands. Working from site-specific work to regional analysis, researchers can explore how what would become ‘Scotland’ came to be, and whence sprang its inspiration. 2. Lifestyles and Living Spaces: Holistic approaches to exploring medieval settlement should be promoted, combining landscape studies with artefactual, environmental, and documentary work. Understanding the role of individual sites within wider local, regional and national settlement systems should be promoted, and chronological frameworks developed to chart the changing nature of Medieval settlement. 3. Mentalities: The holistic understanding of medieval belief (particularly, but not exclusively, in its early medieval or early historic phase) needs to broaden its contextual understanding with reference to prehistoric or inherited belief systems and frames of reference. Collaborative approaches should draw on international parallels and analogues in pursuit of defining and contrasting local or regional belief systems through integrated studies of portable material culture, monumentality and landscape. 4. Empowerment: Revisiting museum collections and renewing the study of newly retrieved artefacts is vital to a broader understanding of the dynamics of writing within society. Text needs to be seen less as a metaphor and more as a technological and social innovation in material culture which will help the understanding of it as an experienced, imaginatively rich reality of life. In archaeological terms, the study of the relatively neglected cultural areas of sensory perception, memory, learning and play needs to be promoted to enrich the understanding of past social behaviours. 5. Parameters: Multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and cross-sector approaches should be encouraged in order to release the research potential of all sectors of archaeology. Creative solutions should be sought to the challenges of transmitting the importance of archaeological work and conserving the resource for current and future research.
