This chapter summarizes the results obtained. Faith is both a secular and a sacred virtue, displaying the same nature in both contexts. This nature is fundamentally dispositional rather than doxastic or cognitive, and the states that realize the disposition are behavioural, cognitive, affective, and conative. Though a virtue, faith has a downside, and the same is true of humility. The distinctive relationship between the two is that each is a virtue complementary to the other.

Artists, designers, photographers, and visual scientists are routinely looking for ways to create, out of a single image, the feeling that there is more to see than what meets the eye. Many well-known visual illusions are dual in nature, causing the viewer to experience two different interpretations of the same image. Hybrid images illustrate a double-image illusion, where different images are perceived depending on viewing distance, viewing duration, or image size: one that appears when the image is viewed up-close (displaying high spatial frequencies) and another that appears from afar (showing low spatial frequencies). This method can be used to create compelling dual images in which the observer experiences different percepts when interacting with the image.

In this chapter I try to show what an ontology for normative nonnaturalism could look like. Firstly, I inquire into the modal nature of the supervenience relation within a normative nonnaturalist framework. I surmise that the necessity preceding a strong normative supervenience relation is neither analytical nor nomological, but metaphysical. Borrowing from E. J. Lowe’s essentialist theory of necessity I argue that among the metaphysical determinations of an object’s essence there is also the property of possessing a certain telic structure. Secondly, I analyze the normative constitution relation, whose function is to identify what grounds supervenience. This analysis highlights the fact that end-directedness is a component of constitution along with descriptive properties. Thirdly, I show that supervenience follows from constitution and that the supervenience relation between descriptive and normative properties is obtained by means of the constitution analysis of the telic structure of the object displaying such properties.

By deciding whom to execute and whom to spare, the fledgling Irish state was asserting its sovereignty and flagrantly displaying its power to deflect the law from the lethal outcome it was otherwise bound to reach. The unregulated nature of executive clemency stood out against a background of bureaucratic decision-making which strove to be open, consistent, and dispassionate. This chapter examines what can be learned about how executive clemency was debated around the cabinet table, to what extent it was vulnerable to public opinion and petitions for mercy, other factors which affected the exercise of discretion (including the role of Department of Justice officials), and the relevance of the make-up of the government, in particular, the character of the Minister for Justice. (e.g. P.J. Ruttledge versus his successor Gerald Boland). The concept of groupthink in relation to government decision-making is explored.

Contemporary art has been a site of intense linguistic production for several decades. Visual artists experiment with new ways of displaying or enframing language that contest or subvert dominant language ideologies. Thus artists produce new regimes of language that regulate or unsettle moral or political visions, shaping attitudes and behaviour. The works of the contemporary artist Xu Bing, as well as interpretations of his work by the artist and commentators, demonstrate how artistic production and criticism contribute to language ideological debates about Chinese—in particular, about Chinese writing—and the nature of language more broadly. This chapter discusses aspects of Xu Bing’s biography and artistic practice related to his use of language. It discusses the language ideological positions underpinning four of his major works. It concludes with reflections on what language policy and planning scholars might learn from extending the scope of their interest to text-based art.

Hetherington, Stephen. Stephen Hetherington on Epistemology. Editado por Jeremiah Joven Joaquin e Mark Anthony Dacela. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350344778.

Philosophy has long embraced epistemology as one of its central elements. What is knowledge? How do we gain it? Can we gain it? Or do we always deceive ourselves when thinking that we have knowledge? Are we too deeply fallible ever to know something? For centuries, these questions have helped to define and motivate epistemological research. This volume engages strikingly with them, offering some unusual answers. Stephen Hetherington’s prominent career within epistemology has been a series of bold, varied and provocative arguments and ideas. Bringing together some elements of his unique body of writing for the first time, this collection features previously published, as well as new, material displaying and extending some of his highly original approaches to key issues including knowledge, justification, fallibility, scepticism and the Gettier Problem. Advancing our understanding of the systemic nature of Hetherington’s thinking, Stephen Hetherington on Epistemology presents his distinctive perspective on some of philosophy’s central questions about knowledge – an inviting blend of forensic detail and ‘big picture’ proposals.

van Miert, Dirk. The Biblical Philology of Daniel Heinsius (1619–1640). Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198803935.003.0005.

Chapter 4 assesses the biblical annotations of Scaliger’s star pupil, Daniel Heinsius. Recognizing the increasing currency of biblical philology, Heinsius published two massive tomes displaying his New Testariment scholarship, his versatility in Greek, and his apparent mastering of Hebrew. Yet, the results of his studies were diffuse. Heinsius subjected himself to the control of the professors of theology of his own university, and he was reticent with his textual criticism. Instead, he concentrated on criticizing the work of Theodorus Beza and on advancing his theory that New Testament Greek was not merely koine Greek with Hebrew and Aramaic influences, but a ‘Hellenistic dialect’ spoken by the native Greek-speaking Jews. Heinsius’s annotations show that it is not useful to attempt to place biblical philology on a one-dimensional scale between orthodoxy on the one hand and radicalism on another, but also that mainstream philology was welcomed by many.

Richard, Mark. How do Slurs Mean? Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198758655.003.0008.

It seems “part of the meaning” of a slur that it is a device for displaying contempt. And this seems part of the explanation of differences between slurs and their “neutral counterparts.” But some people, making no linguistic mistake, use slurs in a jocular way, or without animus as interchangeable with their counterparts. And even if the illocutionary “fact” were in some sense “part of meaning,” one might doubt that it is relevant to what is said by an utterance. But information about illocution can be part of “what is said.” This chapter sketches an account of meaning in the sense of what needs to be grasped in order to be a competent speaker; and meaning in this sense is intimately connected with what determines what is “literally said” by an utterance. This provides a natural explanation of why the use of slurs gives rise to a distinctive sort of offense.
