Discarding the unreliable late evidence for the Library of Alexandria in the Hellenistic period, I establish a new history of libraries and books on more secure primary sources. Beginning in the second century BCE at various places across the eastern Mediterranean, rich, powerful men began to sponsor collections of books. These new public displays of aristocratic and royal munificence (euergetism) so transcended earlier holdings of books—which had been small, vocational, and private—that in an important sense they constitute the invention of the library. As political institutions, these libraries depended on a revaluation of books, treating them as valuable irrespective of their content, and in various domains people increasingly attended to books as formal objects. Romans accelerated the pace and scope of this biblio-political revolution and extended the revaluation of books, transformations which gave a deeply anachronistic imprint to the frequently cited late stories about Hellenistic libraries.

Contemporary literary criticism is increasingly seen in an interdisciplinary concept between literary science and journalism (e.g. Mária Stanková). There may be several reasons for this, not least the fact that literary critical texts are now written not only by renowned literary critics, but also by anyone interested in commenting on literature. In view of the increasing subjectivity of expressing and presenting the reader's evaluation of a work of fiction in literary-critical reviews, we focus on its various types published in 2021 with regard to emotionally-expressive lexical units. The aim of the paper is to compare the peculiarities of expressive-emotional expression in reviews of literary-cultural periodicals (Fraktál, Books on the Reach) and opinion-forming media (Pravda, .week) by means of text analysis.

From November 1939 to March 1941, the monthly magazine ?Slavenska muzika?, a journal of the Association of Friends of Slavic Music, was published in Belgrade. The magazine did not differ from other Serbian magazines of the interwar period in its sections. ?Slavic music? also published essays on music, music criticism, reviews of books and music editions, notes, news, obituaries, and in one case, polemics. However, differentia specifica of this review is the exclusive focus on the music of the Slavic nations. The study provides a review and analysis of the texts in this journal. It was noticed that in ?Slavic music? were crossed the Slavophile idea, which has a long tradition among Serbs, and Marxism, at that time strongly represented by one part of Belgrade musicians. The study also contains an integral bibliography of ?Slavic music?, which has not been published so far.

The arrival of the occupying armies in August 1968 and the subsequent normalisation purges resulted in an unusually large wave of emigration. The regime responded to this by closing state borders in October 1969. The great number of refugees brought new stimuli to activities in exile, such as establishment of new exile periodicals and publishing houses, which contributed to preserving independent Czech literature. Some of the books produced by publishing houses in exile were always intended for readers in Czechoslovakia, where they were transported using various smuggling routes. A new smuggling channel was created in 1983 – the so-called Austrian route – by agreement between Jiří Pelikán and Vilém Prečan. They used the code word “dictionary” for this route when communicating with each other. The “dictionary” was a large passenger car, which Jiří Pelikán authorised Adolf Müller to purchase and which was modified by experts from the American secret service who created a secret compartment for transporting books and periodicals in the luggage space. Vilém Prečan and Josef Jelínek then came up with a way to fill the compartment. Young teacher Helmut Bachmann, took receipt of the car from V. Prečan in Vienna. He was talked into collaborating by Jana Stárková. Bachmann drove the car to Czechoslovakia as a tourist roughly once every three months and Jiřina Šiklová organised receipt of the consignments in Prague. The compartment was created so cleverly that the Czechoslovak border control forces were unable to find it, even after thoroughly inspecting the car for forty minutes, something that occurred in March 1984. This transport channel, financed by Jiří Pelikán, was used from the summer of 1983 until the end of 1987, when the car was taken out of operation.

What follows is a list — covering items published between 1900 and 1986 — of serious accounts of the history of important architectural projects undertaken in Ireland between the late seventeenth and early twentieth centuries. It is intended to be comprehensive in respect of monographs, collective works and articles in non-Irish periodicals, but in respect of Irish periodicals it is a supplement to Richard J. Hayes, Sources for the history of Irish civilisation: articles in Irish periodicals (9 vols, Boston, 1970). None of the above definitions is rigidly adhered to: much is included which falls outside their limits, but an attempt has been made to include everything that falls within them. The following have not been comprehensively included: (1) Monographs on non-resident architects whose careers, notwithstanding Irish commissions, were mainly abroad, e.g. Robert Adam, G.E. Street, Edwin Lutyens. This is partly because such architects are so numerous (there is evidence of over a hundred British architects having professional contacts with Ireland between 1750 and 1850) and partly because they are already well served bibliographically, e.g. by Howard Colvin, A biographical dictionary of British architects, 1600–1840 (London, 1978); (2) studies of the foreign careers of Irish architects, e.g. James Hoban, Eileen Gray; (3) studies of vernacular architecture (but see entry under this heading in the index); (4) contemporary reviews or criticism of buildings; (5) reviews of books; (6) printed primary sources, such as J.T. Gilbert, Calendar of ancient records of Dublin… (19 vols, Dublin, 1889–1944).

The article deals with the original documents on the activities of the Academy of Sciences’ translators of the 18th century, stored in the St. Petersburg Branch of the RAS Archive (SPbB ARAS. F. 3. Op. 11). The materials include translators’ reports and letters on their work as well as various related documentation on recruitment and dismissal, job assignment, wages, rewards, illness and disability periods, etc. The tasks of the Academy’s translators covered the translation of current record keeping, as well as scientific and literary works; beyond that, a large layer of work was associated with translating articles for “Sankt-Peterburgskie Vedomosti” and “Primechaniya” periodicals. In 1743 at the Academy of Sciences there was formed a so-called “Translation Expedition”, a structure having a major task to translate and release the above-mentioned periodicals. Ivan I. (Johann Caspar) Taubert was entrusted to control the work of the “Translation Expedition”. The article examines documents on the activities of Academy’s translators Ivan Akimov, Nikolay Bukhvostov, Ivan Golubtsov, Vasily Lebedev, Karl Friedrich Moderach, Nikolay Shikhmatov, Gustav Freygang, Vasily Teplov, Ivan Staffenhagen, Alexey Polenov, Samson Volkov, Semen Bashilov, Gur Ivanov, Ivan Ungebauer, Ippolit Bogdanovich, as well as the Chinese language translators Larion Rossokhin and Alexey Leontiev. The article also mentions the translation of a contract for the sale of a card factory, made in 1775 by Ivan Staffenhagen. In 1790 there was established a “Translation Division”, aiming at translating various useful books from foreign languages into Russian. The article examines the report of 1795 on the course of the “Buffon's Natural History” translation, undertaken by the “Translation Division” members, academicians S. K. Kotelnikov, S. Ya. Rumovskiy, A. P. Protasov among others. The examined documents on the activities of the Academy of Sciences’ translators of the 18th century demonstrate a variety of translation tasks, which, depending on specialists’ competence and experience, included translations of various levels and directions: materials for periodicals, current record keeping, as well as scientific and literary books.

Translations had a significant role both in the popularization of Eastern Armenian and the establishment of literary and cultural ties between the Armenian community and the British. The purpose was to further the international outlook, understanding and emotional experience of foreign environments and cultures, on the one hand, next was to make more literature available to children and to contribute to the development of the readers’ set of values. It should be noted that literary relations first of all contributed to the emergence of bilingual dictionaries. Shmavonian published an English-Armenian dictionary which was intended “for the entertainment of studious children” (Mkhitaryan 2016:81). 19th century was marked by social political changes and created conditions for the development of new Armenian literature which was so important for shaping the mind set and behavior of the Armenian children. Thus, Armenian translators translated literature in connection with social and economic forces. The Armenian printing business in India operated for a century and published almost 200 books, booklets and more than ten periodicals. In this article some translations published in Azdarar (The Intelligencer, 1794, Madras), Azgaser (the Patriot, 1845, Calcutta), Azgaser Araratian (Patriot Araratian, 1848. Calcutta), and Hayeli Kalkatian (Mirror of Calcutta, 1820, Calcutta) are examined.

A short story On 3 March, the Reuter correspondent in Belgrade reported: ‘The Yugoslav literary newspaper Knjizevne Novine has published a short story by Milovan Djilas … His first work published at home for 34 years, it was printed so that readers could ‘judge him on his literary merits’. Mr Djilas (76), once a close lieutenant of Tito, fell into disgrace in 1954, serving nine years in jail and being expelled from the party for criticising Tito's policies. He is widely known for his political books and essays, not so much for literary fiction. We acknowledge the publication of his short story in Knjizevne Novine as a step in the right direction; when the same story was printed some time ago in Encounter and Tempo Presente, both periodicals were banned in Yugoslavia. We are proud to present another short story by Milovan Djilas; in sending the manuscript, Mr Djilas was the first writer to respond to our invitation to contribute to this 100th issue of Index on Censorship.

This chapter on the interwar origins of the UK’s premier national cultural agency considers why literature—a form seemingly opposed to the more obvious forms of propaganda—was attractive to state investment. It does so by showing how literary policy was first yoked to foreign policy, amid the growing national rivalries of the 1930s, in ways that posed challenges for the cultural philosophy of the British state. It then turns to Stanley Unwin’s Books and Periodicals Committee to show how the British state deferred to literary experts and industry insiders, including to commission libraries of ‘world literature’ on decidedly English terms. The chapter concludes by discussing the contrasting approaches taken by T.S. Eliot and Stephen Spender to working for the state cultural ‘machine’ via the British Council.

Throughout the eighteenth century, the business of reprinting books was associated with abridging texts. However unusual it may seem today, the copyholder’s property right in a ‘thoughtful abridgment’ of another’s text was commonly protected by law. This chapter examines the abridging activities of John Wesley, and of a variety of other actors in such areas as law and history, medicine and science, philosophy and theology, biography and fiction. Publishing ‘epitomes’ of proven sellers posed less financial risk than publishing new titles. Considering the extracts and abridgements that characterized so much of eighteenth-century newspapers and periodicals helps us understand how such practices were a routine part of the circulation and consumption of print. Abridgments of provincial publishers can be particularly instructive, as these are commonly adjusted in length and format to suit the productive capacity of the local printer and/or the buying power of consumers in the local market.

This chapter argues that vernacular Malay was crucial for Indonesia's public sphere to develop and for its middle classes to catch the pace of modernity. The chapter suggests that vernacular language is fundamental to understand the counterpull people faced — and continue to face — between modernity and tradition, progressivism and conservatism, cosmopolitanism and nationalism, Asia and the West. It propels the interplay of pushing and pulling, accepting and rejecting, ridiculing and fetishizing. By studying the vernacular words, meanings, and messages, the chapter offers glimpses into the knowledge produced and acquired by the so-called common people, in all their heterogeneity, who are by no means as commonly understood as the term would suggest. Ultimately, it concludes with two sets of reflections: first on postcolonial attitudes towards Sino-Malay print culture and then on directions for further research. Amidst the kaleidoscope of Asian studies and institutionalized knowledge production, SinoMalay books and periodicals occupy a nebulous position.

Abstract Although the various methods of searching discussed so far are all applicable in any subject area, some topics present unusually complex arrays of research resources, and require more particular overviews of individual sources. Those discussed in this chapter have proven themselves useful in providing answers to many specialized questions. Two excellent starting points for biographical information on individuals, both prominent and obscure, are the Biography and Genealogy Master Index (Gale) and Biography Index (H. W. Wilson); both are available in subscription-online and print formats. The former is an index to thousands of biographical dictionaries, who’s who compilations, and subject encyclopedias having biographical articles; it is an excellent starting point for locating biographical write-ups on both famous and obscure people from all parts of the world, from all time periods. It currently indexes nearly 14 million sketches. Biography Index is the largest ongoing index to biographical books, pamphlets, and journal articles; it indexes biographical articles from 2,700 periodicals and more than 1,500 books every year. The subscription database format covers material published from 1984 forward (as of this writing); the printed volumes go back to 1946.

Abstract By the time that the Tatler was dismissing science, it would have been widely understood that the public was moving on to other interests. For the interval had seen the development of literary periodicals. More surprising, it would not be long before England saw the development of an imaginative literature that turned news discourse into an art form.In July 1691, four months after the appearance of the Athenian Mercury, a general review appeared in London. The Works of the Learned, or An Historical Account and Impartial Judgment of Books newly printed, both Foreign and Domestic was edited monthly by a Huguenot immigrant, Jean de la Crose, who had experience in this line on the continent. In fact, it was de la Crose whose translations had been marketed in the unsuccessful Universal Historical Bibliotheque (1687), noted earlier. So it was his own experience that made him lament that his adopted England was behind Europe in the matter of reviews: “The great Encouragement they have received in Holland, France, Germany, etc.... seems to reproach us for having so long neglected it.”‘ Science might be well served in England, but the other areas of scholarship—history, literary criticism, theology, travel, for example-were not.

Abstract Acrisis of confidence in modern medicine is upon us,” Ivan Illich announced near the beginning of his 1975 Medical Nemesis. Crisis was in fact the medical leitmotif of the decade. On assuming the presidency in 1969, Richard Nixon had warned Americans that “we face a massive crisis” in medical care, and a national poll conducted a year later found that three-fourths of heads of households agreed with the statement “There is a crisis in health care in the United States.” Rising costs and limited accessibility to care were major factors in generating the sense of crisis, but equally important was dissatisfaction with physicians. A wave of books such as Medical Nemesis, Thomas McKeown’s The Role of Medicine, Rick Carlson’s The End of Medicine, and Marcia Millman’s The Unkindest Cut, not to mention numerous articles in lay periodicals, repeatedly took the profession to task for a catalogue of sins both committed and omitted. The unifying theme of allopathic medicine’s antagonists, voiced so effectively by Illich, was that modern medicine was guilty of a “presumptious expertise” that required every form of human suffering to be pressed into its narrow biomechanical construct of disease. And just as hubris had been punished by the ancient Greeks through Nemesis, the goddess of retribution, so medicine would get its comeuppance for so arrogantly ignoring the human facets of illness that did not fit easily into the biomedical box. MDs would have to answer, in short, for not treating the whole patient.

Abstract A Canadian label that morosely calls itself Just a Memory has re-released three recordings from 1967 and 1970 that turn a belated spotlight on an obscure saxophonist named Brian Barley. A search of periodicals and books turned up not a single reference to him outside of discographies, so all I know of him is drawn from the blurb on his sole album as a leader—born in Toronto; took up saxophone under the influence of Lee Konitz; favored “Coleman, Coltrane, Dolphy, Rollins, and Shepp”; died “a tragic and accidental death” in June 1971, at 28. Not much. His playing on these CDs makes you want to know more. The earliest is Maynard Ferguson Sextet, a radio transcription session coordinated with Ferguson’s homecoming during Expo ‘67. This was a transitional period for Ferguson, whose long association with Roulette had ended in 1964, leaving him foundering among labels and alternating between big band and sextet. The Canadians hired him to stock both units with homegrown talent. In the sextet, they got a credible rhythm section and a front line comprising Ferguson’s blaring trumpet, an untuned altoist, and the 24-year-old Barley, whose tenor saxophone displays a promisingly forthright middle register and a penchant for growls and pitch deviations. It’s his blues solo over a walking bass on Mike Abene’s “To and Fro” and his soul-style variations on an otherwise flat performance of Lanny Morgan’s “Polecat” that make the album worth Hill, and there is something preposterous about hearing him in a restaurant, where the slightest chatter or table noise can throw off your (but apparently not his) concentration. Still, his opening set at Iridium last week settled any fears that he might actually have learned a standard over the years, or written an AABA tune in which each letter represents eight bars.
