Thomas, Lowell P. "The effect of a verbal framing variable in a weight control program". Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/87659.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
Two versions of a six month weight control program were developed. A "behavioral" version used traditional behavioral terminology. This program was then modified to produce a "vivid" program using anecdotal material and examples drawn from the community. Terminology in the vividly framed program was reduced to positively framed “common language." For example, "dieting" was replaced by "eating better," and "exercise" by "pleasant physical activity." Seventy-four women then participated in either vividly or behaviorally framed programs. Anthropomorphic and demographic data initially obtained included height and weight, body mass index, weight goals, and marital and employment status. Subjects attended sessions which met at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. Meetings were held weekly for seven weeks, bi-weekly for a month, and monthly until the end of the six month program. Major variables of interest included attendance, compliance with assignments, changes in total weight and changes in weight reduction quotients. Evaluations of the outcome variables revealed no effect for the verbal framing variable. It is suggested that either verbal framing has little effect in weight control or the level of framing used was ineffective. Other variables, however, appeared to influence outcomes. Self selection took place, with the younger, unmarried women filling the two 6 p.m. groups while older, married women filled the two 5 p.m. groups. Subjects who came closest to achieving their weight goals were the younger, lighter women. Neither attendance nor compliance with assignments were predictive of weight goal attainment. It is suggested that older individuals who have been overfat for many years might best concentrate on healthy eating habits and not set difficult weight goals. Alternatively, younger, less chronically overfat individuals might be better able to benefit from diet-exercise programs and specific weight loss goals.

Obesity is an epidemic, chronic, multifactorial and high risk disease, which affectsthousands of people and provokes a lot of social, emotional and economic harms. Behavior Analysis tries to comprehend the obese person’s behaviors which cause both the acquisition and maintenance of such condition and the interactions of this individual with the environment. In spite behavioral strategies have been used, such as the self-monitoring register and the verbal report training, research on obesity treatment usually emphasizes non behavioral goals as criteria of success on treatment (e.g. weight loss). However, some authors defend the use of behavioral criteria which may result on benefits on quality of life, emphasizing the construction of healthy behaviors instead of eliminating maladjusted behaviors. Based on Goldiamond’s constructional model, the objective of this study was to verify the effects of self-monitoring and verbal report training on the establishment and maintenance, in the short term, of nutritional rule governed behaviors on obese adults. Two obese and adult women, patients on treatment in a private nutritional clinic, who had problems regarding to adherence to diet, participated of this research. Data were usually collected in participants own residences, on alternated days, on five stages: (1) Base Line Interviews in order to identify the initial nutritional behaviors; (2) Intervention, divided on the subsequent conditions: (I) Self-monitoring Training and (II) Verbal Report Training; (3) Short Term Maintenance; (4) Follow-up; and (5) Closing: Final Interview, in order to assess obtained data. On condition I, self-monitoring and meal planning registers were used, as for the condition II, verbal report was used for planning and access to the goal meal which had happened the day before. On all the intervention interviews, consistence analysis were conducted, confronting register/ goal meal report and the rules described on nutritional plan; following nutritional rules behaviors were also analyzed in terms of costs and benefits and the determinants variables for the emission of nutritional rule governed behaviors were identified. The training was applied to only one meal at each time, until one of the criteria of change for the goal meal was reached. In this case, the main criterion was the occurrence of 60% adherence on three consecutive interviews. On each interview the Diet Adherence Rating (DAR) was calculated for the goal meal. Results indicated that both participants reached the established criteria for all the meals but the afternoon snack. The efficacy of both procedures on installing self-monitoring feeding behavior was observed, however, the results concerning to self-control were few, suggesting that another behavioral strategies are needed, such as a self-control training, in order to maintain the results obtained on obesity treatment. The complexity of the treatment for obesity was also discussed as well as the need to considerer not only the disease focus, but the context in which obesity is inserted.

Resumo:
AbstractAlthough Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels strictly speaking never used the term, “dialectical materialism” refers to the philosophy of science and nature developed in (and on the basis of) their writings, emphasising the pivotal role of real-world socio-economic conditions (e.g. labour, class struggle, technological developments). As indicated by their correspondence (Marx & Engels, 1983), their collaboration represented a unique intellectual partnership which began in Paris in 1844 and continued after Marx’s death, when Engels took care of Marx’s legacy, notably the sprawling mass of manuscripts which he managed to transform into Volume II and III of Capital. While their joint effort (resulting in no less than 44 volumes of collected writings known as the Marx Engels Werke, published by Dietz Verlag Berlin) began as co-authorship, they eventually decided on a division of labour (with Marx focussing on Capital), although reading, reviewing, commenting on and contributing to each other’s writings remained an important part of their research practice. As a result of this division of labour, while Marx focussed on political economy, Engels dedicated himself to elaborating a dialectical materialist philosophy of nature and the natural sciences, resulting in works such as the Anti-Dühring and his unfinished Dialectics of Nature (published posthumously), although Engels (a voracious intellectual) wrote and published on may other topics as well, so that his output can be regarded as a dialectical materialist encyclopaedia in fragments. Again, although I will start with an exposition of dialectical materialism, my aim is not to contribute to scholarly discussions on dialectical materialism. My focus is on the how and now, and my aim is to explore how to practice dialectical materialism of technoscience today (cf. Žižek, 2014/2015, p. 1; Hamza, 2016, p. 163).

This chapter aims to identify the main scholarly and popular approaches that have been adopted in the past towards the mythical figure of the Cyclops, and thus to provide a complement to and a contrast with the analysis by Aguirre and Buxton. Seven past perspectives are identified: 1. Folktales—still perhaps the most popular scholarly gambit. 2. Location—especially, where are Odysseus’ wanderings supposed to be placed on the map? (The answers have been astonishingly varied.) 3. Anthropology—what have earlier scholars said about the Cyclopes’ way of life—for example, their diet, their pastoralism, and their (lack of) hospitality? 4. Art and text—how have scholars variously interpreted the interrelationship between verbal and visual accounts of the Cyclopes? 5. The eye—if any one aspect of the Cyclopes has dominated explanations of the origin of the mythology of these ogres, it is that which stresses their monocularity. But how convincing are such explanations—in terms, for example, of the skull of a dwarf elephant, or the cone of a volcano? The authors have serious doubts. 6. Homonyms—what characteristics have scholars found that link the pastoral ogres, the blacksmiths, and the builders? 7. Reception—how has the cultural ‘afterlife’ of the Cyclopes been regarded? Although there are some impressive previous studies of parts of the tradition, no one has so far given a satisfactory overview.

Kidd, Edwina, e Ole Fejerskov. "Communicating with the patient and trying to influence behaviour". In Essentials of Dental Caries. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198738268.003.0008.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
In the previous chapters, the point has been made that dental caries is controllable by the patient regularly disturbing the biofilm, the use of fluoride, especially in toothpastes, and a sensible, but not draconian diet. The success of these strategies depends on the patient, but patients may choose not to comply with the health advice given to them. Many know they should not smoke, should lose weight, and take more exercise, but choose not to alter their behaviour. Altering a patient’s behaviour may be key to caries control, and for this reason all members of the dental team should be interested in strategies to modify behaviour. Motivation is about unlocking the desire within another to make a useful change in behaviour. Good communication is one of the foundations for motivation. Compliance is not likely where patients do not understand, or cannot remember the message. However, people do not change their behaviour just because someone tells them, however clearly, that this is a good idea. Motivation comes from within and cannot just be instilled. It should also be remembered that motivation to change is something that comes gradually, with most people feeling ambivalent about change. Someone who is ambivalent may see a reason to change, but may also see a reason not to change. When we try to persuade someone who is ambivalent to change, the danger is they will resist, giving voice to the counter-argument as to why they cannot change. Actually, the best way to achieve change is if the patient, rather than the health professional, says why and how they should change. In other words, it is their idea and we are there to support it. Despite all these difficulties, good communication can make all the difference in achieving behaviour change and, for this reason, this chapter will now take a detour to discuss aspects of communication. Communication is made up of more than just the actual words used to convey information. The tone used conveys the speaker’s emotions and attitudes, and so-called non-verbal communication or body language can be just as important as the actual words.

In this article we present an educational achievement of an alternative control of the IRB1600 ABB robot, using an explicit path specification, using a laser pointer and a CCD camera. With this system we measured the execution times of instructions data transfer between computers and robot equipment system to evaluate and improve the quality of similar systems in which there are mechatronics and computer processes that require synchronization of several adjacent processes. The experimental recorded data will be analyzed using Self-Organizing Feature Maps (SOFM) and as result it is shown that in the transmission of data sets significant run time dependencies can not be found. Also a run time prediction method will be developed and tested using Nonliniar AutoRegressive (NAR) type neural networks. The method has satisfactory result. Malnutrition and neuro-disability are major public health problems in Africa. There is limited autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research in Kenya and families lack support aetiology is linked to witchcraft and sorcery. Research indicates an increase in ASD prevalence globally and in Africa. In Kenya, 2.2% (0.9 million people) live with some form of disability. Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) suffer from neuro disabilities eliciting: altered sensory processing, restricted interests, and behavioural rigidity, allergies and aversions. Autism spectrum disorders have no cure, management is by use of interventions targeting autistic symptoms such as gastrointestinal disturbances, problem feeding behavior, linguistic development, non-verbal cognitive development, and motor development. The overall objective of this review was: to identify dietary and nutritional interventions available for the management of ASD symptoms in children and adolescents – Kenya. The study employed systematic review as the study design. The study included articles from Cochrane Library, PubMed, PMC, Google scholar, and Free Full databases. These were searched to identify studies published between September 2011 and September 2021. Eighteen articles were included: 12 randomized case-control trials, 3 open-label trials, one 2×2 factorial study, and 2 cross-over trials. The following dietary and nutritional interventions were evaluated: gluten and casein-free diet; ketogenic diets; probiotic supplements; specific carbohydrate diets; polyunsaturated fatty acids; vitamin and mineral supplantation (A, B6, B12, D, magnesium, folic acid); and alternative diets. Results from study indicate that vitamin and mineral supplementation was the most used intervention in management of ASD symptoms. This review established that there are limited or no studies on dietary and nutritional interventions in Kenya. Authors reported improvements in ASD symptoms in individuals receiving dietary and nutritional interventions such vitamin and mineral supplementation. The study findings will help policymakers and implementers to understand the consistency and precision and impact of these interventions. This will improve the safety and efficacy of interventions positively impacting the health and nutrition outcomes of children and adolescents with ASD. More research targeting ASD dietary and Nutritional Interventions is required in Kenya and other resource constrained settings. Keywords: autism spectrum disorder, nutritional intervention, diet therapy, child, adolescent, Kenya.

Introduction: Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by a neurodevelopmental disorder, in which the child has persistent deficits in verbal and / or non-verbal communication, social interaction and behavior. One of the factors related to the cause of ASD are nutritional aspects, such as intestinal dysbiosis. Objective: To analyze the relationship between imbalance in the intestinal microbiota and the pathophysiological characteristics of ASD. Methodology: This is a systematic review, carried out in the Pubmed, SciELO databases, in order to answer the question: what is the relationship between intestinal microbiota imbalance and ASD? 139 articles were found, of which 12 were selected, through the simultaneous crossing between the descriptors “Autistic Disorder”, “Dysbiosis”. Articles written in Portuguese and English published from 2016 to 2021 were inserted. Results/Discussion: Most children with ASD exhibit gastrointestinal symptoms, such as constipation and diarrhea, and greater intestinal permeability, with major differences in the composition of microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Patients with ASD have a lower microbiota diversity in the GIT. However, it is not possible to identify the origin of this change, since children with ASD often have changes in diet and eating behavior, which could alter the microbiota. Conclusion: It is still complex to understand what are the main causes of ASD. The gut-brain axis is an important associated factor both in the etiology and in the clinical manifestations of ASD. The use of diets, together with the modulation of the microbiota, by the use of probiotics and specific antibiotics, are possibilities for promising therapy.

In modern society, life expectancy has increased, and the digital healthcare industry has grown up as people are more interested in health. Moreover, the recent spread of COVID-19 has increased the time spent at home, increasing the demand for weight control such as diet and nutrition-related products, exercise & fitness services. In the United States and Europe, weight management is mainly implemented to improve health or reduce health risk factors, whereas, in Korea, weight management is highly focused on external appearance alone. The purpose of this study is to propose a healthy weight management service design for users in their 20s and 30s in Korea who experience severe health problems in their weight management program by analyzing their needs and pain points in the process and defining fundamental problems. This study applied the double diamond model, a service design methodology, and divided the research process into discover, define, develop, and deliver. We conducted a digital ethnography of 20 selected weight management videos and in-depth interviews with 9 people who actively use the weight management process in order to collect user's verbal and non-verbal raw data and define service directions based on users' pain points and need & wants. Furthermore, we could substantiate specific solutions for service directions, the psychology types of each user, and the behavior inducement; and finalize the service architecture. Finally, we organized two sets of usability test of the service prototype of wireframes and developed the user interface design by applying heuristic evaluation criteria and analysis of the user observation from the test.As a result, we decided to use a smart mirror as a service platform based on the insight that visual observation is more effective than numerical value for weight management and the study that mirror exposure therapy is used to change users' behavior for actual weight management. In addition, We chose DTC genetic testing to identify the innate body information of each user and suggest appropriate nutrients, diets, and exercises for them. Not only that, but also, it was analyzed that in order for the user to continue weight management, it is necessary to habituate through user behavior improvement and gain motivation. Therefore, in order to form new habits of users, 1) 66 days were set as one unit, 2) the correct behavior model is to be presented to users, 3) persuasive technologies such as simplifying actions or going through steps were applied. Lastly, motivation is needed to maintain the habits, which must meet three factors: autonomy, relationship, and capability; for this reason, we provided functions according to user tendencies, provoked user interactions by sharing information and communicating with others, and comprised accomplishment process of one's goals. This study, applying DTC genetic testing results and using a smart mirror with strengthening users' experiences through the formation of digital and non-face-to-face platforms, differentiates from existing services in the healthcare industry.
