Bibliography: leaves 347-361. Presents results of 2 longitudinal studies investigating the oral health of older adults with dementia, using questionnaires and clinical inspections at baseline and one year. Groups studied were nursing home residents and those living in the community, with moderate to severe dementia or no dementia diagnosis. Caries experience was related to dementias severity and not to specific dementia diagnoses. Coronal and root caries experience was higher in dementia participants with moderate-severe dementia, the socio-economically disadvantaged, more functionally dependent, taking neuroleptic medications with high anticholinergic adverse effects, with eating and swallowing problems, were not attending the dentist, who needed assistance and were behaviourally difficult during oral hygiene care and whose carers were burdened.

Bibliography: leaves 99-105. Examines the ways in which local governments in the Adelaide region have used the Local Agenda 21 program, with particular focus on public participation and the development of indicators. Argues that sustainability requires the support and involvement of the widest possible community, a necessity that will not be realised until public participation, particularly involving those groups with a reduced 'social voice' (such as women, youth and minority cultural/ethnic groups), becomes an integral part of the local government's modernisation agenda. Concludes with a summary of the main issues and a set of recommendations for future research and action.

Reed, Deborah A. "Spatial and temporal biogeochemical changes of groundwater associated with managed aquifer recharge in two different geographical areas". University of Western Australia. School of Biomedical, Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences, 2008. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2008.0074.

Resumo:
[Truncated abstract] Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) is a technique that can be used to capture and store water in aquifers for later reuse. This method recycles water that would normally be lost or discarded to the environment. MAR has been observed to have the potential for improving the quality of recharged water through a combination of physical, chemical and biological processes. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in groundwater microbial population structure during MAR and the major influences that drive these population changes. Biogeochemical MAR studies have the potential to assist in the improved prediction of the removal of contaminants such as nutrients, pathogens and trace organics from the recharged water. Biological clogging during recharge also has the potential to overwhelm an aquifers ability to process wastewater thus reducing the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer. Therefore further research into the spatial and temporal biogeochemical processes that occur during MAR is required. The geochemical and microbial population dynamics of two contrasting MAR techniques were investigated at two different geographical locations (Perth, Western Australia and Adelaide, South Australia). These MAR sites contained aquifers of dissimilar properties that were recharged with wastewater that contrasted in water quality. The Perth MAR site received secondary treated effluent which continuously infiltrated the unsaturated zone into an unconfined aquifer aided by infiltration galleries. Reclaimed water was extracted from a well at distance from the infiltration gallery. ... Notably the background and recovered water was most dissimilar in microbial and chemical population structure to that described for the infiltration gallery and injection well. Microbial and chemical evidence suggested that the background and extraction well groundwater were unaffected by plume migration. These results suggested that extraction well groundwater was similar in quality to that of ambient groundwater. Significant geochemical and microbial changes of secondary treated effluent during infiltration and lateral movement through aquifer were implicated in addition to the forced hydraulic gradient created from extracting fives time the volume of infiltrating wastewater. This study demonstrated that microbial populations and the geochemical processes associated with MAR can be studied and compared. Multivariate statistical methodology greatly simplified a vast array of dynamic biogeochemical information that could be dissected for meaningful interpretation over distance and time. The study evaluated the major biogeochemical influences which resulted in microbial and geochemical changes where it was noted that microbial populations were more dynamic than geochemical variation over time. Additionally biogeochemical comparative analysis indicated that microbial populations could change in population structure before a shift in aquifer geochemistry was detected. It is anticipated that the results from this study will benefit further research into the biogeochemical processes involved in water quality changes (e.g. nutrient removal, pathogen decay and biodegradation of trace organics) as well as controlling biological clogging of MAR schemes.

Malinga, Sandile Bethuel. "A comparative study of atmospheric dynamics in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) near Grahamstown (South Africa) and Adelaide (Australia)". Thesis, Rhodes University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1007307.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
The observations made near Grahamstown (33 .3°S, 26.5°E), South Africa and Adelaide (34.5°S, 138.5°E), Australia over the years 1987 to 1994 are used to study the dynamics of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (ML T) region with a focus on ∼ 90 km altitude. In particular this thesis deals with on the atmospheric mean flow and the solar diurnal and semi diurnal oscillations with a view to (i) deducing their patterns at the two sites, (ii) comparing the dynamic structures observed at the two sites with special emphases on longitudinal variations, and (iii) putting these observations in a global context by comparing with other ground-based observations, satellite observations and numerical simulations. The main findings are summarised below. The mean flow and the tides at Grahamstown and Adelaide are characteristically variable at planetary time scales. Wavelet spectral and multiresolution analyses reveal that the dominant planetary oscillation is the quasi-16-day oscillation. However, no apparent correlation in the 16-day waves of the mean flow, the diurnal tide and the semidiurnal tide was found. The short-term fluctuations were also investigated using complex demodulation and bispectral techniques and it was found that some of the observed variations in tides could be due to non-linear wave-wave interactions. The long-term trends of the mean flow and tides show patterns that are in broad agreement with theory, results from elsewhere (ground-based and satellite) and the results of the Global-Scale Wave Model and various models by Portnyagin and others. In general the mean flow, the amplitudes and phases of both tides were found to exhibit seasonal and interannual variations which are thought to be related to various factors including (i) changes in the atmospheric mean environment, (ii) thermotidal forcing (iii) gravity wave effects, (iv) planetary scale influence, (v) long-term (e.g. quasi-biennial oscillation) modulation, and (vi) solar activity. There are significant longitudinal differences in the dynamic structure between Grahamstown and Adelaide. More especially, Grahamstown tends to have stronger mean flow and tidal activity than Adelaide. For tides, these differences are thought to be partly due to nonmigrating tidal modes but, in general, migrating modes were found to be dominant.
