Sustainability and development of river transport can reduce the burden of road transport, where the development of road transport requires clearing new land is increasingly expensive and development is quite expensive. To estimate the amount of potential movement of people and goods through river mode choice model can be derived based on a comparison of risk at each mode, whereby the greater the risk will be even smaller portion of the mode selected. From the results of the model calculation of the aggregate distribution modes, obtained through a portion of the potential movement of the Batang Hari river in Jambi, Sumatra Island, Indonesia is 13, 89% for the movement of people and 14.85% for goods.

The feasibility of the launched transport mode is studied by means of the physical and simulation model. And a new transport mode—launched transport mode, is put forward. After describing the overall design thinking, a preliminary design of the aircraft of the transport mode is carried out. Then the result is obtained that the new mode can save 10%~30% on cost and improve 30%~50% on efficiency than other transport modes when undertaking the equal transport task according to flight-test and simulation of the aircraft model. The launched transport mode provides a new mode for the short-to-medium distance transportation, as well as a new idea for the innovation of the transport mode in the future.

Data on transport usage is important in a wide range of areas. These data are often obtained manually through costly and inaccurate interviews. In the last decade, several researchers explored the use of smartphone sensors for the automatic detection of transport modes. However, such works have focused on developing centralized machine learning mechanisms. This centralized approach requires user data to be transferred to a central server and, therefore, does not satisfy a transport mode detection mechanism’s practical response time and privacy needs. This research presents the Federated System for Transport Mode Detection (FedTM). The main contribution of FedTM is exploring Federated Learning on transport mode detection using smartphone sensors. In FedTM, both the training and inference process is moved to the client side (smartphones), reducing response time and increasing privacy. The FedTM was designed using a Neural Network for the classification task and obtained an average accuracy of 80.6% in three transport classes (cars, buses and motorcycles). Other contributions of this work are: (i) The use of data collected only on the curves of the route. Such reduction in data collection is important, given that the system is decentralized and the training and inference phases take place on smartphones with less computational capacity. (ii) FedTM and centralized classifiers are compared with regard to execution time and detection performance. Such a comparison is important for measuring the pros and cons of using Federated Learning in the transport mode detection task.

ABSTRACTWe consider energy transfer between non-equal nanoparticles mediated by a quantum system. The nanoparticles are considered as thermal reservoirs described as ensembles of finite numbers of harmonic oscillators within the Drude-Ullersma model having mode spacings Δ1 and Δ2. Our approach is based on the generalized quantum Langevin equation. The quasi-static energy transport between the thermal reservoirs is investigated. As is shown, the double degeneracy of the mode frequencies, which occurred in the previously considered case when Δ1 = Δ2, is removed in the present case of non-equal mode spacings. Equations describing long-time (t ∼1/Δ1,2) relaxation for the mode temperatures (or the ensemble averaged mode energies) are solved and the resulting expression for the total energy current between the nanoparticles is derived and explored.

Purpose This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of environmentally friendly consumers. It examines differences in holiday transport mode choices by persons’ general level of environmental commitment across lifestyle domains. Adopting a marketing perspective, the study also explores transport mode perceptions and underlying product attribute preferences that may shape holiday transport mode choices. Design/methodology/approach The study adopted Kaiser’s (1998) General Ecological Behaviour scale to measure commitment to environmentally friendly behaviour. ANOVAs were run to examine differences in actual holiday travel behaviour and transport mode perceptions by level of environmental commitment. Pattern models were calculated to estimate differences in the relative importance of selected transport mode attributes (price, travel time, punctuality, accessibility, flexibility, comfort and environmental impact). Findings The study findings suggest that differences exist in transport mode choices for train and car use, but not for plane use, namely, train users tend to be more environmentally committed and car users less so. Differences were also noted in transport mode perceptions, with more environmentally friendly consumers holding more favourable views of the train. Those who are more environmentally committed also placed greater importance on environmental impact and less importance on comfort and time in mode choice. Originality/value The study applied an environmental scale thus far not used within tourism research. It also adopted a marketing perspective focused on product attributes to support the development of strategies to encourage environmentally friendly holiday transport mode choice.

To remain competitive and respond to rapidly changing markets, we need to increase flexibility in today's global marketplace. In this respect, the selection of the appropriate mode of transport is one of the most important functions to be performed by logistics. The selection of the appropriate mode of transport is a multi-criteria problem involving both quantitative and qualitative criteria. This paper deals with the selection of the mode of transport using the Analytic Hierarchy Process method (AHP). AHP is a method of decomposing a complex unstructured situation into simpler components to create a hierarchical system problem. This paper describes a general model of selection of transport mode using AHP including its application to a manufacturing company that selects the appropriate mode of transport from three potential transport modes. The aim of this paper is to create a useful decision support tool for selection of the transport mode using the AHP method within distribution logistics of motor fuels. This tool helps companies to make the right decision on the choice of transport mode by taking into account different importance of the different criteria that influence the decision-making process.

The global quantum network requires the distribution of entangled states over long distances, with substantial advances already demonstrated using polarization. While Hilbert spaces with higher dimensionality, e.g., spatial modes of light, allow higher information capacity per photon, such spatial mode entanglement transport requires custom multimode fiber and is limited by decoherence-induced mode coupling. Here, we circumvent this by transporting multidimensional entangled states down conventional single-mode fiber (SMF). By entangling the spin-orbit degrees of freedom of a biphoton pair, passing the polarization (spin) photon down the SMF while accessing multiple orbital angular momentum (orbital) subspaces with the other, we realize multidimensional entanglement transport. We show high-fidelity hybrid entanglement preservation down 250 m SMF across multiple 2 × 2 dimensions, confirmed by quantum state tomography, Bell violation measures, and a quantum eraser scheme. This work offers an alternative approach to spatial mode entanglement transport that facilitates deployment in legacy networks across conventional fiber.

This study investigated the reason why road transport mode is preferred over the inland water mode in the Niger Delta region. The study was delimited to only few selected coastal capital cities in the Niger Delta. The research method adopted in the study was a survey. Simple severity index was also used to ascertain the safety level of both ferries and automobiles which could influence commuters’ mode choice behaviours. The data required for this study were obtained from both primary (obtained through the administration of questionnaire to household heads) and secondary data extracted from FRSC, records. Four states in the Niger Delta (Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers) with very similar transportation system were selected for the survey. A total number of 5,000 pieces of questionnaire were distributed proportionately. Households were randomly selected from streets and offices in the urban centers and the jetties\ water fronts (Khaima, Odi, Nembe, Marine Base Abonima wharf) to capture ferry users. From the results, it was gathered that the accident level in both water and road are similar. The introduction of free bus system affects users’ choice of transport mode, hence militating against the adoption of inland water transport mode in the region. The introduction of Rapid Mass Transit affects users’ choice of transport mode, thereby militating against the adoption of inland water transport mode in the region. The introduction of Monorail System affects users’ choice of transport mode, thus, negatively impacting the adoption of inland water transport mode in the Niger Delta region. To make the inland water borne transport mode attractive to the people of Niger Delta region, there should be a government intervention in the introduction Luxurious Water Taxi, which the study respondents agreed to that it will positively affects their choice of this transport mode.

A new approach for spatial modelling of transport mode choice is presented in the paper. The approach tackles the problem by considering the trade-off between subjective and objective factors. To obtain mode Preference Rates (PRs) based on subjective factors, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is applied. The objective factors are expressed with the journey time from any point in the map to destination according to the available transport mode choice on the specific connection. The results are presented as PRs of individual transport modes. The model is validated on the conducted the survey, with students of Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) as a target audience. Members of different target groups (age, national, employment) decide differently regarding the transport choice, so it is better to analyse them separately. The presented model can be used for the city transport planning in any urban area. It can help promote the sustainable modes of transport in the areas that are less adjusted in sustainable manner.

Inefficient public transport is considered a normal problem in any city or country. The motivations of transportation users determine their choice of transportation mode. This paper is aimed to identify the reasons behind the choice of transportation mode among daily commuters. Specifically, this paper observes the quality of public transport offered towards the users and how it affects their decision on the transportation mode. To understand their motivations, a literature review study has been conducted to interpret their preferences on the quality of public transport. The result shows the indicators that can be measured in the quality of public transport. Several past kinds of research have discussed the measures in solving issues related to public transport to encourage people to use the service given.

The connectivity of the urban public transport network and the convenience of transfers between modes of transit are important factors that affect whether passengers choose public transport. Identifying the key nodes that affect network connectivity, direct access, transfers, and clarifying the main factors that restrict the network efficiency play important roles in improving the efficiency of the public transport network and establishing a “green city”. On this premise, this paper constructs two single-layer networks and a composite network that can reflect the transfer relationship between ‘bus–bus’, ‘metro–metro’, and ‘metro–bus’ based on the method of Space-P. The composite network realizes the integration study of homogeneous and heterogeneous stops, lines, and transfer relationships in the public transport network. At the same time, five kinds of centrality indexes are applied to the transport transfer network, and the significance of these indexes in the network is explained. Through the comprehensive analysis of these five types of indexes, the key nodes affecting the network connectivity, direct access and transfer efficiency, can be identified more accurately. Taking the public transport network of Xi’an as an example, the structural characteristics of the networks, including scale-free and small-world characteristics, were empirically analyzed. The main stops that play important roles in networks were identified based on the integrated centrality, degrees, and weight degrees. The research results showed the following: (1) Xi’an’s metro network, bus network, and metro–bus composite network all have scale-free and small-world characteristics. (2) The influence of the key stops of the metro network is concentrated, while the influence of the key stops of the bus network is scattered. (3) The public transport network in the first ring road area of Xi’an has the highest degree of direct access, and the core areas of the south, west, and north of Xi’an also have high direct access. However, the direct access in the area east of Xi’an is slightly lower. (4) Xi’an’s bus transport network covers a large area, showing the characteristics of a dual-core “central + southern” network. (5) The metro–bus composite network demonstrates a closer connection between stops and a more balanced network. (6) Finally, the degree of direct access to stops in the bus transport network and metro transport network shows the characteristics of “the single core is dominant, and the circle diffusion weakens step by step”.

Abstract This work presents a study of plasma transport at low aspect ratio on the National Spherical Torus Experiment tokamak, where the turbulent and neoclassical energy fluxes calculated by the quasilinear Trapped Gyro Landau Fluid (TGLF) model and the multi species drift-kinetic Neoclassical solver (NEO) are validated against experimental data. The turbulent energy transport of two plasma discharges, one in the L-mode confinement regime and another in the H-mode regime, is dominated by electrostatic drift-wave instabilities, while the ion heat transport has a significant neoclassical contribution. The data analysis workflow is described in detail to understand how the variations of mapping and fitting of experimental data affect the power balance solution and subsequent flux-matching plasma profile predictions with the TGYRO solver. On average, the predicted plasma profiles are consistent with experimental data. However, the solutions are sensitive to various input parameters, including boundary conditions, and the electron-ion coupling. Linear gyrokinetic stability analysis demonstrates close agreement of the real frequencies of unstable modes between TGLF and CGYRO gyrokinetic simulations, but higher growth rates are predicted by TGLF, especially for the H-mode case. Estimates of the low-k modes’ contributions to the total flux are consistent with linear stability analysis and the E × B suppression of turbulence in TGLF simulations with the SAT1 saturation model, while the SAT2 saturation model over-predicts the low-k modes’ contribution in the H-mode case. Moreover, the results with SAT1 model are consistent with power balance analysis, which indicates only neoclassical ion energy fluxes inside ρ < 0.4 in the L-mode case and ρ ⩽ 0.7 in the H-mode case. The presence of multi-scale turbulence and ion-scale driven zonal flow mixing effects are also observed in TGLF scans of the electron turbulent heat flux over a range of temperature gradients and the electron-ion temperature ratio, which could explain the strong model sensitivity to variations of input parameters.

The elderly population is increasing rapidly. Understanding travel behaviour for this group of commuters (in terms of the trip purpose and travel time) is necessary for future transport planning. Many researchers are working on travel’s spatial and temporal analysis to provide operational decision making and transport network planning. This research study’s primary purpose is to identify the influence of trip duration (using public transport), time of the day (usage of public transport), and public transport (PT) accessibility over public transport mode preference by elderly (over 65 years of age) commuters. The methodology of this study is divided into two parts as spatial analysis and temporal analysis. The research identified the dependency of trip duration, time of the day, geographical areas, and PT access over transport mode preference of elderly. The temporal study shows that transport mode preference can vary depending on trip purposes. However, for specific trip durations and times of the day, the elderly sometimes choose PT as a mobility mode. For instance, on shopping trips between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m., the elderly have a greater possibility of choosing public transport over private vehicles. Moreover, the results show the public transport mode preference based on different times of the day and trip purposes. Urban and transport planner can use the results to modify/plan public transport schedule, which can be easily accessible by the elderly population.

Bali Province in Indonesia is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world. The number of tourists visiting this province keeps increasing year by year parallel with the increase of the population of local citizens. Such a phenomenon will certainly increase travel demand and put pressure on the current transport infrastructure. Hence, transport infrastructure development is essential to support the travel demand. This study explores the possibility of implementing a new public transport system in the South Bali District, a district with numerous tourist attractions and activity centres. Data collection on the current transport system and land use in the district were carried out to understand potential corridors for public transport. A stated preference survey was also conducted to discover the public transport mode preferred by the respondents, encompassing tourists and local citizens. This study then recommends the type of public transport mode to be implemented in the district based on i) space availability, ii) respondent preference, and iii) ability to accommodate demand based on calculation. The study concludes that Automated Rapid Transit (ART) is a mode that has the highest potential to be implemented in South Bali Districts.

Identifying distribution of users’ mobility is an essential part of transport planning and traffic demand estimation. With the increase in the usage of mobile devices, they have become a valuable source of traffic mobility data. Raw data contain only specific traffic information, such as position. To extract additional information such as transport mode, collected data need to be further processed. Trajectory needs to be divided into several meaningful consecutive segments according to some criteria to determine transport mode change point. Existing algorithms for trajectory segmentation based on the transport mode change most often use predefined knowledge-based rules to create trajectory segments, i.e., rules based on defined maximum pedestrian speed or the detection of pedestrian segment between two consecutive transport modes. This paper aims to develop a method that segments trajectory based on the transport mode change in real time without preassumed rules. Instead of rules, transition patterns are detected during the transition from one transport mode to another. Transition State Matrices (TSM) were used to automatically detect the transport mode change point in the trajectory. The developed method is based on the sensor data collected from mobile devices. After testing and validating the method, an overall accuracy of 98% and 96%, respectively, was achieved. As higher accuracy of trajectory segmentation means better and more homogeneous data, applying this method during the data collection adds additional value to the data.

Transport interventions help to facilitate the sustainable travel behavior. The effects of transport interventions on travel choices have been addressed extensively. However, little research has been devoted to the influence of transport interventions and travel choice on travel perception. This study aimed to investigate the relationship among the three aspects. Two intervention measures, information intervention and public transport service improvement, were selected. Intervention experiments were designed to collect mode choice and corresponding travel perception in different experiment stages. Process models of information intervention and public transport service improvement were proposed. The results show that information intervention only had a minor effect on mode choice and had no direct effect on travel perception. Public transport service improvement in in-vehicle time and comfort enhanced public transport use dramatically. Comfort improvement also had positive effects on travel perception. Walking had positive and public transport trips had negative effects on travel perception. For travelers who had a high evaluation of car trips, the probability of green mode use would decrease. Travelers who gave high marks to trips by green mode would have a higher probability to keep traveling by green mode. This study contributes to facilitating public transport use and enhancing positive perception during traveling.

The ClC family encompasses two classes of proteins with distinct transport functions: anion channels and transporters. ClC-type transporters usually mediate secondary active anion–proton exchange. However, under certain conditions they assume slippage mode behavior in which proton and anion transport are uncoupled, resulting in passive anion fluxes without associated proton movements. Here, we use patch clamp and intracellular pH recordings on transfected mammalian cells to characterize exchanger and slippage modes of human ClC-4, a member of the ClC transporter branch. We found that the two transport modes differ in transport mechanisms and transport rates. Nonstationary noise analysis revealed a unitary transport rate of 5 × 105 s−1 at +150 mV for the slippage mode, indicating that ClC-4 functions as channel in this mode. In the exchanger mode, unitary transport rates were 10-fold lower. Both ClC-4 transport modes exhibit voltage-dependent gating, indicating that there are active and non-active states for the exchanger as well as for the slippage mode. ClC-4 can assume both transport modes under all tested conditions, with exchanger/channel ratios determined by the external anion. We propose that binding of transported anions to non-active states causes transition from slippage into exchanger mode. Binding and unbinding of anions is very rapid, and slower transitions of liganded and non-liganded states into active conformations result in a stable distribution between the two transport modes. The proposed mechanism results in anion-dependent conversion of ClC-type exchanger into an anion channel with typical attributes of ClC anion channels.

Abstract College students are argued to have some interest in adopting alternative mobility solutions. Even though previous works have examined the transport mode choice of college students, the inclusion of shared mobility services is scarcely found. Thus, this study aims to examine the transport mode choice of university students by revealing the heterogeneity in transport mode usage frequency incorporating socio-demographic and travel characteristics as covariates in the latent class cluster analysis (LCCA) framework. The analysis results in four clusters. Clusters of public transport users and walkers are mostly characterized by lower-income students who can reach the university in less than 11 minutes. Private car users mostly fall into a cluster where students generally come from higher-income families. Policies supporting sustainable transportation among college students are discussed, including the mobility points around the university and public transport stops.

Purpose The purpose of this research paper is to understand the major factors considered before choosing the mode of transportation for the freight movement in India by different stakeholders and look into the future prospects on each of these sectors, i.e. railways, roadways and inland waterways. Design/methodology/approach This paper collected the primary data from the various stakeholders in the transportation sector and the secondary data through websites and various ministries of each of the sectors. The various factors are then determined by thoroughly analysing the responses by performing factor analysis in SPSS. Findings Earlier railways were the preferred medium of transportation, but the dynamics shifted during the 90’s to roadways, and now, it is responsible for nearly 60% of the freight traffic with waterways slowing increasing its share of the pie. Also, there are a lot of factors which stakeholders consider, but the major factors that came out are cost, sustainability, timing, government initiatives, visibility and performance. Practical implications The result of this study implies that sectors should create a robust network for easy reach of the customers and try working in conjunction to create an efficient, affordable and highly connected network. This study will also help in taking vital decisions regarding the future planning of transportation sector. Originality/value The findings help in improving the transportation network and help in better decision-making by various stakeholders while choosing the mode of transportation.
