The monograph considers models of the interaction of radiation fields of single-mode and multimode Gaussian laser beams with the optical system of the eye. Formulas have been obtained that allow calculating the coefficient of the degree of danger of laser radiation both by the criterion of damage to the skin and cornea of the eye, and by the criterion of damage to the retina at any distance from the radiation source. Methods for selecting control points are proposed. Examples of specific methods of dosimetric control of laser radiation at the workplaces of personnel servicing laser installations are given. The theoretical foundations of circuit design solutions for laser dosimeters are considered. Modern requirements for the metrological characteristics of dosimeters, as well as methods and means of their verification are presented. For students, postgraduates and teachers of technical and physico-mathematical universities and faculties.

The future of work is at the centre of debates related to the emerging digital society. Concerns range from the inclusion, equity, and dignity of those at the far end of the value chain, who participate on and off platforms, often in the shadows, invisible to policymakers, designers, and consumers. Precarity and informality characterize this largely female workforce, across sectors ranging from artisanal work to salon services to ride hailing and construction. A feminist reimagining of the futures of work—what we term as “FemWork” —is the need of the day and should manifest in multiple and various forms, placing the worker at the core and drawing on her experiences, aspirations, and realities. This volume offers grounded insights from academic, activist, legal, development and design perspectives that can help us think through these inclusive futures and possibly create digital, social, and governance infrastructures of work that are fairer and more meaningful.

Combinatorial optimization offers a rigorous but powerful approach to user interface design problems, defining problems mathematically such that they can be algorithmically solved. Design is defined as algorithmic combination of design decisions to obtain an optimal solution defined by an objective function. There are strong rationale for this method. First, core concepts such as ’design task’, ’design objective’, and ’optimal design’ become explicit and actionable. Second, solutions work well in practice, even for some problems traditionally out of reach of manual solutions. The method can assist in the generation, refinement, and adaptation of design. However, mathematical expression of HCI problems has been challenging and curbed applications. This chapter introduces combinatorial optimisation from user interface design point of view, and addresses two core challenges: 1) mathematical definition of design problems and 2) expression of evaluative knowledge such as design heuristics and predictive models of interaction.

Typography is broadly defined as the composed arrangement and appearance of text and other elements on a surface that involves elements of design. The editor and graphic designer often cooperate in the process of creating the typography and design for a book, monograph, or journal (in print or online), with the goal of achieving a balance of form and readability. According to typographer Edmund Arnold, good design and typography for English-language publications follow the linear flow of the Latin alphabet and support the act of reading. The English language is read from left to right and from top to bottom. According to Arnold, when a reader of such language begins to read a printed page, the eyes first fall naturally to the top left corner and then move across and down the page, first from left to right and then in a right-to-left sweep to the next line, until reaching the bottom right corner. Any design or typographic element that forces the reader to work against this natural flow (reading gravity) interrupts the reading rhythm and should be avoided...

This article discusses synaptic plasticity as a potential mechanism of enduring changes in function observed after relatively brief periods of repetitive (r)TMS. Plasticity is a use dependent enduring change in neural structure and function. The characteristics of plasticity are described in this article. Taking into account, the interactions between rTMS and pharmacological manipulations, this article explores how principles of synaptic plasticity may be exploited in the rational design of future rTMS paradigms in psychiatric disorders like major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, substance use disorders, schizophrenia etc. TMS is under active study in the treatment of a range of psychiatric and neurological disorders. Furthermore, this article discusses the implications for the interpretation of existing TMS literature and design of future interventions. TMS experiments of plasticity in the human motor cortex have been limited by the intensity and frequency of TMS protocols.

This chapter critically reflects on the deceptively simple relationship between language and survey response: the language-opinion connection. It discusses what survey researchers actually know about this link, paying close attention to challenges involving conceptualization, measurement, and research design. Throughout, the discussion emphasizes a core theme: despite great advancements in sampling, measurement, and research design, the study of language and survey response is bereft of strong theory. Thus, while the language-opinion connection seems on the surface easy to assess, public opinion researchers have modest theory to explain how, when, and among whom language influences survey response. Against this backdrop, the chapter outlines several ways forward, stressing in particular the importance of identifying and testing psychological mechanisms.

How does the effective teacher assess and report their classroom curriculum program? Building on the success of their previous book--- Designing the Classroom Curriculum in the Knowledge Age --- David Lynch and Richard Smith seek to answer this question by focusing their “teaching design” idea on classroom assessment and reporting. At the heart of their teaching design idea is the formulation of teaching strategies that enable all students to make the required learning gains. At its core, the book encourages the teacher to work towards becoming a different kind of teacher, a teacher who has a mindset attuned to the Knowledge Age and who embraces new knowledge sets that reflect research into effective teaching. More specifically, the book explores the theory and practice of “teaching design” from the perspective of assessment and reporting. The book examines these premises as context when assessing and reporting the classroom curriculum. A real how to assess and report book.

As more and more equipment incorporates advanced technologies, usability -- the ability of equipment to take advantage of users' skills and thereby to function effectively in the broad range of real work situations -- is becoming an essential component of equipment design. Usability: Turning Technologies into Tools collects six essays that herald a fundamental shift in the way industry and researchers think about usability. In this new, broader definition, usability no longer means safeguarding against human error, but rather enabling human beings to learn, to use, and to adapt the equipment to satisfy better the demands and contingencies of their work. Following an introduction that develops some core concepts of usability, the subsequent chapters: -- describe the role of usability in guiding one of Xerox's largest strategic initiatives -- analyze a Monsanto chemical plant where a study of worker's conversational patterns contributed to the design of a more effective system of controls -- present an empirical study of equipment design practices in U.S. industry which contrasts technology-centered and skill-based design approaches -- summarize recent Scandinavian experiences with user participation in design, with specific reference to the DEMOS and UTOPIA projects -- analyze European experiences that suggest five key criteria for effective human-centered design of advanced manufacturing technology --offer an insightful discussion of the powerful, often hidden human and organizational resources that conventional design processes overlook. Today, three quarters of all advanced technology implementations in manufacturing fail to achieve their performance goals because of inadequate usability. By viewing the human being as a mechanistic system component, and not a particularly reliable one, the traditional "human factors" model of usability virtually ensures that the uniquely human qualities -- experience, adaptation, innovation -- will be neglected, and therefore that new technologies will realize little of their true potential. Usability: Turning Technologies into Tools answers the need for better usability criteria and more effective design and usability assurance processes. In so doing, it leads the way to making a new, broader concept of usability central to design. Its chapters will be of interest to managers and professionals in computer systems, manufacturing engineering, industrial design, and human factors, as well as researchers in disciplines such as computer science, engineering, design studies, sociology, organizational behavior and human resource management, industrial relations, education, and business strategy.

The pathology of MS consists of areas of focal demyelination, known as plaques or lesions, characterized by inflammation, gliosis, and relative axonal preservation. Recent neuropathological studies have established that white matter lesions are heterogenous with respect to the targets of injury and mechanisms of demyelination, highlighting the need for the identification of surrogate clinical and/or paraclinical markers that would correlate with immunopatterns in the general MS population and for the design of novel therapeutic strategies specifically tailored to each immunopattern. Recent neuropathological studies have also shown the cortex is an early target of the MS disease process, and that inflammatory cortical demyelination may be driven by meningeal inflammation.

This chapter discusses current conceptualizations of heterogeneity in alcohol use disorder (AUD), characterizes developmental pathways that lead to different subtypes of AUDs, and discusses how such pathways can inform preventive program design. Specifically, it reviews the “internalizing” and “externalizing” developmental pathways to AUDs. The externalizing pathway is characterized by a core deficit in behavioral control, whereas the internalizing pathway is characterized by a core deficit in emotion regulation. Both pathways predict drinking onset and escalation to AUD for some individuals. The chapter calls for the development of interventions to treat early childhood precursors to AUDs, innovative methods to identify individuals at risk for early emerging AUDs, additional investigation of how core pathway deficits operate across development, and greater consideration of how externalizing and internalizing pathways may interact within and across individuals.

This chapter on intensive care unit (ICU) design looks at the ICU from three perspectives—concept to occupancy, the patient room, and supportive services, and advanced informatics. The design process is complex and time-consuming, and relies upon a design team composed of the main users, architects, and hospital administrative representatives; they must develop a vision for the new unit, which includes its purpose, bed number, staffing, workflow and healing environment. The team must then balance innovation with practicality, disparate technologies with standardization and timely purchase, and desires for the best of everything with physical, space, and fiscal limitations. The ICU patient room is the core of the ICU patient, family member, and staff experiences and should be similarly designed and equipped. Supportive spaces fully integrated with the patient rooms and hospital logistic areas and systems help optimize throughput. Informatics systems that electronically integrate the patient room with all aspects of care should be deployed to intelligently utilize and smartly present and display data, manage alarms, monitor the ICU environment, develop virtual device communities, provide real time locating systems, and address local or remote telemedicine requirements.

This chapter aims to combine traditional approaches to analyzing narratives with strategies for using them to change organizational culture; introduce the concepts of emergent design and appreciative inquiry as a framework for uncovering and disseminating an organization’s core narrative; and describe several innovative organization-level activities that used emergent design and appreciative inquiry narratives to change the culture of a large medical school. Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) is currently the largest medical school in North America. In January of 2003, the Relationship-Centered Care Initiative (RCCI) was launched, with an audacious goal: to change the culture of the school and reverse some of the negative trends it had been experiencing over the past decade. Relationship-Centered Care is an expanded form of patient-centered care, which focuses on including the values, attitudes, and preferences of patients as they seek and receive care.

The chapter surveys the variety of important roles that music plays in society and for members of society. At its core, music is sound that is organized around five basic components: rhythm, timbre, melody, harmony, and form. These various components are perceived from the environment, and then the mind extracts and applies meaning to the sounds. The concept of the sound envelope, consisting of attack, decay, sustain, and release, is illustrated. Effective musical artists understand this meaning-making process and consciously design musical experiences to communicate meaning to listeners.

The Framing of Sacred Space offers the first topical study of canopies as essential spatial and symbolic units in Byzantine-rite churches. Centrally planned columnar structures—typically comprising four columns and a roof—canopies had a critical role in the modular and additive processes of church design, from actual church furnishings in the shape of a canopy, to the church’s structural core defined by four columns and a dome. As architectonic objects of basic structural and design integrity, canopies integrate an archetypical image of architecture and provide means for an innovative understanding of the materialization of the idea of the Byzantine church and its multifocal spatial presence. The book considers both the material and conceptual framing of sacred space and explains how the canopy bridges the physical and transcendental realms. As a crucial element of church design in the Byzantine world, a world that gradually abandoned the basilica as a typical building of Roman imperial secular architecture, the canopy carried tectonic and theological meanings and, through vaulted, canopied bays and recognizable Byzantine domed churches, established organic architectural, symbolic, and sacred ties between the Old and New Covenants. In such an overarching context, the canopy becomes an architectural parti, a vital concept and dynamic design principle that carries the essence of the Byzantine church. The Framing of Sacred Space highlights significant factors in understanding canopies through specific architectural settings and the Byzantine concepts of space, thus also contributing to larger debates about the creation of sacred space and related architectural “taxonomy.”

Philosophy of Biology: A Very Short Introduction outlines the core issues with which contemporary philosophers of biology grapple. Over the last forty years the philosophy of biology has emerged as an important sub-discipline of the philosophy of science. Addressing difficult conceptual issues that arise within the biological sciences, it also encompasses areas where biology has impinged on traditional philosophical questions, such as free-will, essentialism, and nature vs nurture. The book also explores topics such as the logic of Darwinian evolution; the concepts of function and design; the nature of species; and the debate over adaptationism.

The simplest transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) coil is a circular one. The induced current is maximum near the outer edge of the coil while the magnetic field is the maximum under the center of the coil. TMS coils have good penetration to the cerebral cortex. They are commonly placed at the cranial vertex, where they can stimulate both hemispheres simultaneously. The main drawback of circular coils is their lack of focality. Several complex designs for multiloop coils have been proposed to increase the focality or improve the penetration to deep brain structures. This article describes factors of TMS coil design such as mechanical forces and coil lead wires, cooling systems, materials of construction of coil windings, etc. To reduce the risk of lethal electrical shock the entire high-voltage power system, including the lead wires and stimulation coil, must be isolated from earth ground.

Since the turn of the 21st century, “design thinking” has permeated many fields outside of the design disciplines. It is expected to succeed whenever disciplinary boundaries need to be transcended, and it is imperative when thinking “outside the box.” This book argues that these qualities have long been supported by “analogical thinking”—an agile way of reasoning in which symbolic connections allow designers to address the complexities of the design process. An active field in cognitive sciences, artificial intelligence, psychology, and philosophy, “analogical thinking” has yet to be theorized within the built environment. Analogical Thinking in Architecture looks at how this approach offers an agile way to respond to the heterogeneous, and often contradictory, value systems prevalent in architectural design. The book is organized into four case studies: the first reviews analogies in current models of design thinking; the second surveys the revivals of biological analogies from the 19th to the 21st century; the third probes cult architect Aldo Rossi’s theory of the Città Analoga (Analogous City); while the fourth uncovers the role of analogies in critical and theoretical writing. Offering a reappraisal of theories on the role of “analogical thinking” by prominent architects, including Rossi, Peter Eisenman, and Frederick Kiesler; historians Peter Colins and Philip Steadman; and theoreticians Geoffrey Broadbent, Colin Rowe, Peter G. Rowe, Chris Abel and Donald A. Schön; the book provides both a comprehensive introduction to the concept of “analogical thinking” in architecture and the first theorization of analogy specifically within the field of the built environment. This book explores in depth the rich and persistent use of analogical thinking in the built environment. Since the turn of the century, discourses on design thinking have permeated many fields beyond the design disciplines. Design thinking is expected to be helpful whenever disciplinary boundaries need to be transcended, whenever views of a situation to be transformed are conflicting rather than converging, and altogether when it is urgent to think outside the box. The present book argues that these needs have long been supported by analogical thinking: a fundamental capacity to think the unknown through the familiar. As an introduction to the multiple practical and theoretical functions of analogy this book centers on four studies. The first unveils the analogical models at the core of design thinking representations from the 1960s to today. The second study investigates the recurring power of biological analogies in the last two centuries and their culmination at the hinge of digital hypothesis and environmental expectations today. The third study explores the paradoxical imaginary of “analogous cities” as a means of integrating contemporary architecture with heritage contexts. The last study unpacks the critical and theoretical potential of linguistic metaphors and visual comparisons in architectural discourse. These complex visual and textual operations are illustrated by 25 figures and explained through 36 analogical plates. These can be read as an inter-text demonstrating how analogy has the power to reconcile design and theories. So doing, the analogical world of the project is revealed as a wide-open field of creative and cognitive interactions.

This book is about holistic innovation policy: its theoretical foundations, its problem-oriented approach, and its instrument choices. We start with the observation that most of the current innovation policies are not holistic because they only focus on a few determinants of innovation processes. This book provides a theoretically anchored foundation for the design of holistic innovation policy by identifying the core policy problems that tend to afflict the activities of innovation systems, including the unintended consequences of policy itself. This is a necessary stepping stone for the identification of viable, relevant, and down-to-earth policy solutions. The book also offers a critical analysis of policy instruments and their choice in innovation policy design. It is not a ‘recipe’ nor a ‘how-to’ guide. Instead, it provides analytical depth and substantial considerations about the ways in which policy might be providing solutions to problems in systems of innovation. After introducing its conceptual framework about innovation and innovation policy, the book delves into the following areas of innovation policy-making: knowledge production and research and development; education, training, and skills development; functional procurement as demand-side; change of organizations through entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship; interaction and innovation networks; changing institutions and regulations; and the public financing of early stage innovations. Its critical and novel perspective serves policy-makers, scholars, and anyone interested in the design of innovation policy. The summary chapter (Chapter 12) can be read independently of the rest of the book.

This chapter examines the ‘art of comparing’ by showing how to relate a theoretically guided research question to a properly founded research answer by developing an adequate research design. It first considers the role of variables in comparative research before discussing the meaning of ‘cases’ and case selection. It then looks at the ‘core’ of the comparative research method: the use of the logic of comparative inquiry to analyse the relationships between variables (representing theory) and the information contained in the cases (the data). Two logics are distinguished: Method of Difference and Method of Agreement. The chapter concludes with an assessment of some problems common to the use of comparative methods.

Democratic backsliding has been driven in large part by elected governments who have purposefully attacked vulnerabilities in the constitutional and legal framework of democracy to dismantle checks on power and hinder free competition at elections. This Report provides a thorough catalogue of backsliding, detailing strategies employed and actions taken affecting the core institutions of democracy. It distils lessons learned from different cases of backsliding and offers recommendations for improving institutional design to strengthen the guardrails of constitutional democracy. Based on a meticulous study of how backsliding happens, the recommendations go beyond pure counter-majoritarian checks to propose additional mechanisms which promote democratic deliberation, transparency and moderation.

This chapter examines Ecuador as a case of policy regime juxtaposition, marked by the success of the first type of subnational policy challenge and the failure of the second. With respect to the first challenge, two dynamic mayors on the right of the political spectrum—León Febres Cordero (1992–2000) and Jaime Nebot (2000–18)—were able to design, build, and consolidate a distinctly neoliberal model in the critical port city of Guayaquil. Thanks to high levels of administrative capacity and strong internal coalitions, the architects of this model subsequently managed to defend it in the face of repeated assaults after 2006 by leftist President Rafael Correa. While the mayor of Guayaquil has managed to defend its neoliberal policy regime, he and his allies have been unable to moderate the President’s statist project at the national level owing to Guayaquil’s declining structural leverage and the absence of external coalitions with other like-minded subnational officials.

Current research is pushing schools to adopt more student-centered approaches to the classroom experience, and educators—librarians and classroom teachers alike—are being challenged to revise their curricula and instruction to be student-centered, personalized, and differentiated. This book empowers librarians, teachers, and administrators to be empathic problem-solvers and decision-makers. By reframing the challenges that members of a learning community face as opportunities to better meet teaching and learning needs, readers will find that adoption of a mindset focused on users—namely, design thinking—elevates and creates opportunities for innovating pedagogy. Moreover, it can enhance school culture as well as build channels of communication among various stakeholders in schools and districts. When educators of any subject or discipline apply design thinking skills to their curriculum implementation, authentic student-centered learning experiences become the core of the learning experience. The case studies shared in this book provide examples of student-centered approaches being used in elementary, middle, and high schools, so that readers have many models on which to base their work and from which to build confidence in shifting their pedagogy to keep the student at the center of teaching and learning decisions.

In this chapter, we focus on symmetric encryption. We begin by identifying two different types of symmetric encryption algorithm, namely, stream and block ciphers. We discuss the basic idea behind a stream cipher and consider their properties and applications. We then introduce block ciphers. We focus on two extremely important and influential block cipher algorithms, the Data Encryption Standard and the Advanced Encryption Standard, discussing the history of their development as well as their basic design. We then introduce the modes of operation of a block cipher, explaining why different modes have been proposed. We examine in detail four of the most well-established modes of operation and their core properties, as well as classifying other modes of operation.

This chapter provides a generalized framework for helping the clinician to understand basic principles of functional anatomy in the limbs in relation to medical imaging, particularly ultrasonography (US). Certain basic design principles that are evident in the limbs are explained: for example, that larger muscles lie proximally, and that tendons are more numerous and longer distally. While the upper limb is ultimately geared to moving the hand with ease and precision in three-dimensional space, the lower limb is both an organ of propulsion and a column supporting body weight. It is important to note that when the foot is on the ground this has an important influence on muscle function. Fundamental principles of muscle design and action are explained, including the distinction between prime movers, antagonists, synergists, and fixators; the fact that movements and not muscles are represented in the cerebral cortex; the all-or-nothing principle of fibre contraction; the modifying influence of gravity on muscle action; and issues relating to fibre architecture. The less appreciated functions of tendons are included and the difference between an enthesis and an enthesis organ is explained. The similar appearance of nerves and tendons in dissections and even in MRI and US images is explained and the importance of fascia is highlighted—particularly its role as an 'ectoskeleton'. Brief mention is made of adipose tissue and blood vessels, and planes of movement between adjacent structures are described in order to inform the ultrasonographer who deals with structures in real time.

The concluding chapter lays out a strategy for creating an international governance regime for the digital economy. It identifies a core “club” of nations that could champion new digital trade agreements linked to stronger international agreements to advance a trusted digital environment—the Digital Economy Agreement. This agreement would revamp trade policy to adjust to the impact of the information and production disruption by improving rules for digital market integration and would create a foundation that simplifies and strengthens the ability to forge significant pacts advancing the goals of improving privacy and cybersecurity while safeguarding against protectionist trade risks. The design of these agreements emphasizes binding “soft rules” that allow significant variations in national policy trade-offs while establishing a minimum common baseline of policy through the soft rules. Expert multistakeholder organizations drawn from civil society loom large in the design for implementation of the soft rules through such avenues as mutual recognition schemes for certifying compliance with privacy and security objectives. If trade agreements prove unworkable as a starting point, such agreements could be anchored to other types of binding policy agreements. However, trade is the first best option for consideration before there is any decision to resort to second-best strategies.

This ambitious book offers new perspectives on the role of vegetal ornament in medieval church design. Focusing on an extensive series of foliate friezes articulating iconic French monuments, such as Cluny III, Amiens Cathedral, and Mont-Saint-Michel, it demonstrates that church builders strategically used organic motifs to integrate the interior and exterior of their structures, and to reinforce the connections and distinctions between the entirety of the sacred edifice and the profane world beyond its boundaries. Mailan S. Doquang shows that, contrary to widespread belief, monumental flora was not just an extravagant embellishment devoid of meaning and purpose, or an epiphenomenon, but a semantically charged, critical design component that inflected the stratified spaces of churches in myriad ways. The friezes encapsulated and promoted core aspects of the Christian faith for medieval beholders, evoking the viridity of the paradisiacal garden, Christ as the True Vine, the Eucharistic wine and ritual, and the golden vine of the Temple of Jerusalem, originally built by the wise King Solomon. By situating the proliferation of foliate friezes within the context of the Crusades, moreover, this study provides new insights into the networks of exchange between France, Byzantium, and the Levant, and contributes substantially to the “global turn” in the field of medieval art and architectural history.

This book offers a theory of form aimed at rock and pop songs of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. The core claim is that rock form derives from the interaction between thematic design and harmonic structure. Many aspects of a rock song—lyrical structure, instrumental texture, melodic design, etc.—ultimately trace back to the relationship between harmonic trajectory and formal layout. The book begins with a theory of rock harmony rooted in an adaptation of Schenkerian analysis and proceeds to demonstrate that rock music is based on a small set of formal-harmonic patterns used consistently across genres and decades. It is these formal-harmonic patterns—not generic successions of sections—that define rock’s individual forms. These forms provide a backdrop framing interpretations of specific songs, a lens through which we may comprehend their particular lyrical narratives, timbral signifiers, and broad expressive content. Though broadly theoretical in scope, this book is deeply analytical, demonstrating the value and utility of close reading of rock songs. Ultimately, the book defends a structural approach to rock analysis, arguing not only that such an approach is an important and valuable mode of engagement for rock but also that rock’s structural aspects deeply affect the way we perceive and interact with the repertoire.

The purpose of this last chapter is to summarize the results of the comparative analysis of the US and Western Europe and point to venues for further research. Race and immigration are strongly linked to questions of welfare in the US, but there is little empirical support for the argument that immigration has also led to welfare state retrenchment in Europe. Notwithstanding the negative effects of increased ethnic diversity on support for welfare by natives, the institutional design of European welfare programs and the economically divided anti-immigrant movement prevent immigration concerns from translating into actual retrenchment in the core areas of welfare. Ironically, in many cases it is the anti-immigrant Extreme Right that prevents such an outcome in Western Europe.

Chapter 1 introduces the Chinese case of welfare, work, and poverty in the global context. It provides an overview of China’s social assistance system, which centers around the Minimum Livelihood Guarantee, or Dibao, currently the world’s largest such program and the focus of this book. The chapter then discusses the four core values and principles that guide the design, implementation, and development of Dibao, including family and community, work and self-sufficiency, paternalist role of the government, and social harmony. It outlines the scope of the book, which is to provide a systematic evaluation of the impact and effectiveness of China’s primary social assistance program, Dibao, and to draw useful policy lessons for China and other countries. The chapter also previews the main findings.

In Privatization, a distinguished interdisciplinary group of scholars in political science, law and philosophy examine the implications of transferring state-provided or state-owned goods and services to the private sector. The twelve essays in this volume consider how we should evaluate the decision to privatize, both with respect to the quality of outcomes that might be produced, and in terms of the effects of privatization on the core values underlying democratic decision-making. Privatization also affects the structure of governance in a variety of important ways, and these essays evaluate the consequences of privatization on the state. This new addition to the NOMOS series sheds new light on these highly salient questions of contemporary political life and institutional design.

Deliberative mini-publics (DMPs) are gaining popularity as a way to engage ordinary citizens in policymaking. From climate assemblies to online citizen panels on Covid19, these initiatives raise questions about effective approaches to democratic reform as well as the future of democracy itself. Bringing together ten leading scholars in the field of deliberative democracy, this important book examines the features of a Deliberative Mini-Public (DMP) and considers how DMPs link into democratic systems. It examines the core design features of DMPs and their role in the broader policy process and takes stock of the characteristics that distinguish them from other forms of citizen participation. The book offers valuable insights into the contributions that DMPs can make not only to the policy process, but also to the broader agenda of revitalising democracy in contemporary times.
