This study examines the ethics role conceptions of newspaper copy editors, who have long been viewed as “the last line of defense” against errors but sometimes battle for respect in their newsrooms. Survey responses from 470 copy desk workers at 100 daily newspapers indicate that most copy editors think their jobs should have an ethics-watchdog component. They also perceive, however, that there is little newsroom support for their raising questions about potential ethics-related problems. This conflict between perceptions about ideal and real roles was associated with lower job satisfaction across five measures.

The New York Times “streamlined” its editing process in 2017 and reduced the editing staff by nearly half. Through content analysis on corrections (N = 1,149), this research examines the effects of these cuts. Analysis revealed the Times published more corrections before the changes, but that corrections appeared more quickly after the original error occurred and there were more corrections for content in the A section following the staffing cuts. The A section includes national and international news and thus often contains political content, which is rife for heightened scrutiny in an age of media distrust. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed.

That year, Kraft helped design ESPN’s online coverage of the bombing at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta. For 4 years he has headed the news operation at espn.com and since 2009 has also managed the copy desk. Prior to joining ESPN, Kraft spent 6 years as the managing editor of Volleyball magazine, immediately preceded by 3 years as a newspaper reporter at the San Luis Obispo Telegram-Tribune.

This conversation with Mauricio Kagel took place on 16 April 2008 in the studio of Kagel's house in Cologne. Just by looking at the shelves one could learn a lot, seeing how Kagel organized his scores. Each box included everything related to a single work (or group of works), including the ‘Ur-Manuskript’ (primordial manuscript), as he called it, as well as the working copy with the corrections that arose during rehearsals and the contract with the publishing house. The studio enclosed an unsophisticated upright piano, a huge desk and a corner to receive visits like mine.

I started reading “Teaching Queer: Radical Possibilities for Writing and Knowing” on an unusually warm day in April, peacefully sitting outside on my blanket under a tree. Now covered in tree sap, the book sticks to my desk, requiring a firm but gentle nudge to remove it. The sap also obscures the back of the book from view, offering only a partial summary to the curious. Inspired by all of this, in this review I allow myself to be guided by sap and partial readings. My aim is to make you sufficiently curious enough to pick up a copy and enjoy Teaching Queer as I have.

AbstractI think that every time I open Christopher Atwood’s new Encyclopedia of Mongolia and the Mongol Empire, I learn something new.While this could be taken as an indication of my ignorance of things Mongolian, I prefer to think of it as a testament to the depth and breadth of Atwood’s work and ability that the Encyclopedia represents. Although geared towards a more general audience (looking up ‘ger’ sends you to the more popular ‘yurt’ and ‘airag’ tells you to look under ‘koumiss’) anyone with an interest in Mongolia or the Mongol Empire will find this an essential book to have on hand. The review copy has been sitting within ready reach of my desk since it arrived, and has become one of the first places I look to when I want to refresh my memory or trace down a quick fact.

FURENLID Without breaking the orderly progression of events during these last moments of IAU Symposium No. 132, I would like to insert a few words. We have just finished an excellent Symposium, and at this point there is no more any discussion or arguments when we all join in gratitude to the supporting staff at the meeting as well as to the scientific and local organizing committees. The Symposium has for me been like a school, where I have found myself -except for 11 too short minutes- on the appropriate side of the teacher's desk, the student side. The teachers were outstanding! AbstractMerleau-Ponty wrote prolifically throughout his life on psychology, aesthetics, and politics, on pedagogy, physics, and painting. Between his appointment to the Université de Lyon in 1945 and his sudden death in Paris in 1961—a copy of Descartes’ Dioptrique on the desk in front of him—the survey of courses he taught is dizzying in scope. For all its promise, however, the interdisciplinary nature of Merleau-Ponty’s work, and the abruptness of its end, raises the question of how these projects connect. The question is encouraged by Merleau-Ponty’s own notes, which indicate that the book he was working on at the time of his death was meant to return to problems left “insoluble” in Phenomenology of Perception (VI 200). Did he hope this work would supersede the Phenomenology? to correct for its false start? to press on in the same direction?

Abstract In 1934, one of Hitler’s staff members wrote to Leon Whitney of the American Eugenics Society and asked in the name of the Fuhrer for a copy of Whitney’s recently published book, The Case for Sterilization. Whitney complied immediately, and shortly thereafter received a personal letter of thanks from Adolf Hitler. In his unpublished autobiography, Whitney reported a conversation he had with Madison Grant about the letter from the Fuhrer. Because he thought that Grant might be interested in Hitler’s letter he showed it to him during their next meeting. Grant only smiled, reached for a folder on his desk, and gave Whitney a letter from Hitler to read. In this, Hitler thanked Grant for writing The Passing of the Great Race and said that “the book was his Bible.

This chapter details how, in July of 1970, the author received a letter from Washington Post foreign editor John Anderson inviting him to Washington for interviews and a tryout at the newspaper's expense. Washington Post executive editor Ben Bradlee had been transforming the Post from a second-tier newspaper into a rival to the New York Times, and had been attracting “great talent” by paying them good salaries and giving them a lot of editorial freedom. The author worked at his tryout tasks for three days, mostly shaping wire service and other copy from the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. The job offer arrived in late September of 1970. The chapter then looks at the author's first few days at the Washington Post, where he was assigned to the foreign desk and given responsibility for the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, and other parts of the Communist world.

Abstract The reconstruction of the nation during and after the war years began for Whitman with the act of reconstructing his poems. In 1867, at the time the radical republicans in Congress were passing their series of reconstruction acts over the veto of President Andrew Johnson, Whitman brought out the fourth edition of Leaves of Grass.The volume included only six new poems, all minor (an inscription poem “Small the Theme of My Chant,” “The Runner,” “Tears,” “Aboard at a Ship’s Helm,” “When I Read the Book,” “The City Dead-House”). But Whitman extensively revised, reshaped, deleted, and added to the body of poems published in the 1860 Leaves.These revisions, most of which were made during the war in his own blue book copy of the 1860 Leaves,once again reflect the poet’s attempt to bind up the nation’s wounds.’ Although Whitman retained the controversial Children of Adamand Calamusgroupings, the Chants Democraticgrouping was, like the national union that was its theme, broken up and extensively revised. A copy of Whitman’s blue book Leaveswas found in his desk at the Department of the Interior, which led to his being fired from his position by Secretary James Harlan. But it is important to bear in mind that Whitman made the bulk of his revisions before his friend O’Connor published his inspired defence of the poet in 1866 and thus before he emerged in his more public role as “the good gray poet

Abstract In the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries the influence of the revival of ancient Pyrrhonism was noticeable in several areas of intellectual concern. Charles Schmitt has shown that Pyrrhonian themes came up in the questions debated at Oxford. William Hamlin has found other traces of Pyrrhonian topics in disputations at the time. He has also tracked down several copies of the first two Latin printings of Sextus in English libraries from the late 1570s on-ward. As an example of what happened to young readers of the text at the beginning of the seventeenth century, a case that may be typical is that of Joseph Mede (1586–1638). He was at Christ’s College, Cambridge, from 1602 to 1610. We are told that in 1603 young Joseph Mede came across an open copy of Sextus Empiricus on a student’s desk. When he looked at it his intellectual world quickly disintegrated, and he underwent a sceptical crisis. He then tried to find a basis for certainty in the various studies offered at the university. He studied philology, history, mathematics, physics, botany, anatomy, astrology, and even Egyptology (whatever that may have been at the time). In spite of all this learning “his philosophical reading led him towards Pyrrhonism.” He could not accept the possibility that mind might not know reality and might only be dealing with delusory ideas of an external world.

I had a call from Bill Stevens at the science desk of the New York Times. “I’m doing a story about an article that is about to appear in Nature,” he said, “and I’d like to fax you a copy for your comments. The article is by Robert Costanza and twelve other economists, geographers, and ecologists. It’s called ‘The Value of the World’s Ecosystem Services and Natural Capital.’” As soon as I heard the title, I knew that I was not likely to see eye to eye with the authors. With some reluctance, partly because Costanza is a committed and accomplished environmentalist whom I didn’t like to criticize, I agreed to read and comment on the article. Soon I had it in hand. I started out to read the article thoroughly, word by word, examining the methods, the assumptions, and the numbers in the tables with care. But it was hard to do; I kept wanting to skim. Not that it was badly written; it was clear and lucid. Not that it was aggressive or arrogant in tone; indeed it was mildly apologetic. Not that it was ill-intentioned; its goal was to demonstrate that nature in the form of intact ecosystems is worth far more to us than we currently imagine. Nor were the estimates exaggerated; as the authors claimed, they were obviously understated, giving a minimal figure of $33 trillion for the annual value of nature. This is approximately twice the value of the global gross national product, they pointed out. In other words, nature is very valuable to us, even more valuable than the goods and services that people produce. One problem was immediately obvious. The authors did not seem to realize the dangers of what they were doing. Never mind the larger dangers to our essential humanity, but even the practical, economic dangers.

Abstract A young European scholar, back from a swift trip through the South, picked up from my desk a copy of Hal Steed’s Georgia: Unfinished State. A passage on the last page confused him. It read: “I would not say that the Anglo-Saxon is superior to other races, but that this race makes up nearly one hundred percent of the population of the South augurs well for unity—unity in political beliefs, in religion, in social problems.” The European was amazed at the figure—nearly one hundred percent Anglo-Saxon. “But I saw so many Negroes there,” he said. I could have mentioned other oddities in the enumerating of the Negro, from the adoption of the Constitution when a Negro slave counted as three-fifths of a man, to the present when a Negro is counted as a unit, a fraction, or a zero, according to the purpose of the counter. Instead I assured him that the evidence of his eyes could be trusted: the gatherings at one side of the depot to see the train go through, the hordes in the ramshackly slums of the cities, the crammed Jim Crow waiting rooms and coaches. Negroes were there all right. Even the publicists who excluded Negroes as part of the population would admit that they were there. Too much so, some might say ruefully, pointing out the large numbers of Negroes as the cause of the poverty and backwardness of the South, apologizing for the belt of swarming cabins engirdling the cities, hoping that the stranger might soften his verdict on the town until the business section around the depot slowly came into view. Too numerous, therefore Negroes had to be kept in their places, the argument might run. Such spokesmen would have a glib reply to reconcile the statistics of “nearly one hundred percent Anglo-Saxon” with the patent reality: “Oh, that’s easy to understand. By population, we mean the people that count.”

“Don't pick the hard stories, sweetheart,” an editor told me long, long ago. “Those are the ones that will break your heart.” Nonsense, I thought. I was young and ambitious and eager to chase a story through multiple all-nighters. He was old and wily and appreciated those stories that would glide through the copy desk and get him home in time for a glass of scotch and dinner with the family. Now, more than 20 years after getting that good advice, I too appreciate the easy stories. But I'm still trying for the hard ones. Every few years, if I'm lucky, I manage to pull one off. When I do, the small, secret joy of having done so sustains me through months of too-short deadlines and too-tight space. In thinking about what elevates a story from okay to prizewinner, from another day at the office to the top of the clip file, I think again about that long-ago editor, a grizzled veteran of the Saturday Evening Post. Don't try to be different, he said. Write about what everyone else is writing about. Those are the big stories, the ones that matter. And he was right. In covering science and medicine, we're blessed with big stories galore. Cloning, cancer, Mars exploration, anthrax, the Big Bang, climate change, nanotechnology, heart disease—it's birth, death, creation, the meaning of life. If that can't get you on page Ai, what can? But that very abundance, and the flood of data that bears those stories along, make it all too tempting to settle for the easy get—to write off the journals, take your lead from the New York Times, and get by. A great story demands more. I like to think of journalism as bricklaying—a noble craft, but a craft all the same. To build a wall, I need bricks. To build a noble wall, I need the best bricks ever. Facts are the bricks of a story, and finding the right bricks requires serious reporting. I can't say that exhaustive research and reporting will guarantee a great story, but I've never been able to pull one off without it.

The Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is the premier civil works engineering and environmental sciences research and development arm of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). As such, it partners with the Army, Department of Defense (DoD), federal agencies, and civilian organizations to help solve our Nation’s most challenging problems in civil and military engineering, geospatial sciences, water resources, and environmental sciences. A special government knowledge center, ERDC Information Technology Laboratory’s Information Science and Knowledge Management (ISKM) Branch is critical to ERDC’s mission, fulfilling research requirements by offering a variety of editing and library services to advance the creation, dissemination, and curation of ERDC and USACE research knowledge. Serving as the publishing authority for the ERDC, ISKM publishes all ERDC technical publications to the Digital Repository Knowledge Core, sends a copy to the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) and creates a press release about each publication on the ERDC website. The Forefront seeks to provide an additional mechanism for highlighting some of our technical publications to the ERDC, USACE, Army, and DoD communities. This publication also encourages those outside ERDC to contact us about using ERDC editing services.
