This paper aims at finding out what effort logistics-related companies based in the Slovak Republic demonstrate, concerning their social responsibility. Using a standardized questionnaire, addressing approximately 30 issues from the field of social responsibility, grouped in five categories, we approached over 100 members of the Association of Logistics and Freight Forwarding of the Slovak Republic, of which 29 provided answers. Despite the low number of respondents, it was still possible to formulate several findings. First, it was revealed that a part of the Slovak logistics industry cares about the issue of social responsibility although the level of such a commitment is uneven for the five analyzed dimensions. Second, the responding companies with employees, or a department, dealing specifically with corporate social responsibility, demonstrate more effort in the field. Third, the responding foreign-owned companies also demonstrate additional efforts towards social responsibility. These findings may become a starting point for further research on the topic and intensify the discussion on the still underdeveloped concept of logistics social responsibility, not only from a one-country perspective.

PurposeThis study examined how a US college athletic department’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives influenced fans’ online donation intentions.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from 490 fans of a Division I intercollegiate athletic program and analyzed using structural equation modeling.FindingsResults indicated that the quality of CSR information positively affected e-satisfaction with CSR initiatives, which, in turn, predicted fans’ online donation intentions, university attachment, and fan–athletic department identification. Moreover, the relationship between e-satisfaction with CSR initiatives and online donation intentions was mediated by fan–athletic department identification.Research limitations/implicationsThis study has a limitation in terms of generalizability. The current focus on a single athletic department does not apply the results to athletic programs at other US universities and colleges. Future research should confirm the generalizability of the study’s findings by collecting data from fans of other athletic departments.Originality/valueIt is important to understand the impact of CSR activities on online donor intentions because marketing these activities could serve as an effective fundraising tool for athletic departments. The findings from this study inform athletic administrators of factors they might consider when promoting CSR initiatives through online media to encourage fans’ donations.

Purpose In a world where corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a meaningful trend valued by firm stakeholders, it is still not clear how the marketing department integrates corporate-level social responsibility strategy into its departmental activities i.e. socially responsible marketing activities (SRMA) and whether such activities can benefit the department. Using legitimacy as the underlying theoretical explanation, this paper aims to study two instrumental returns from SRMA at the marketing department level, i.e. marketing department’s performance – impact outside the firm on multiple marketing-related outcomes and influence within the firm – the power of the marketing department compared to other departments. Design/methodology/approach Three studies were performed. Study 1 is a survey that offers a validated measure of SRMA and examines its relationship with the focal outcome variables. Study 2 is also a survey that investigates the mediating role of the marketing department’s legitimacy and the moderating role of customers’ interest in social responsibility and uses actual sales data of firms. Study 3 is an experiment that examines the main findings in a controlled setting using participants other than marketing executives i.e. chief executive officers. Findings Study 1 shows that SRMA is different than the closely related variable socially responsible business strategy and is positively related to the marketing department’s performance and influence within the firm. Study 2 complements these findings by demonstrating these impacts are mediated by the marketing department’s legitimacy and strengthened with higher customers’ interest in social responsibility. Study 3 sets the causality between the focal variables and the mediating role of legitimacy. Research limitations/implications This work extends the study of firm-level CSR to the department- and implementation-level, in the context of marketing departments. It reveals the underlying mechanism driving the positive impact of SRMA, i.e. legitimacy, and identifies a moderating condition, i.e. customers’ interest in social responsibility. It further extends research on the role of the marketing department and its contribution to firm performance. Practical implications Marketers can benefit from the reported findings by understanding when and how CSR-related, domain-specific activities that feature the traditional responsibilities of marketing, including market research, customer relationship management and the product, promotions, price and place (4Ps) may be reshaped to include a broader set of stakeholders and a socially responsible angle and thereby generate more legitimacy and impact – inside and outside the firm. Originality/value This study provides a novel perspective on how marketing departments evaluate CSR in their daily activities where such engagement vests increasing returns to the marketing department and underpins the successful implementation of CSR.

Purpose This study aims to examine the impact of corporate culture, measured by corporate social responsibility (CSR), on the likelihood and severity of corporate fraud. CSR literature indicates that corporate managers are moral actors and are obliged to exercise their discretionary decisions according to their moral standards. Based on the moral development theory, this study argues that higher managers’ ethical values reflected by higher CSR activities are less likely to commit fraud and have lower severity of fraud. Design/methodology/approach This study argues that at the firm level, corporate culture can be measured by firms’ CSR activities. Using probit, match-pair, propensity matching and Heckman regressions on a sample of 152 criminal corporate fraud cases in the USA from the US Department of Justice (DOJ) during 2000 and 2010, this study empirically examines the impact of CSR, CSR strengths and concerns scores on the likelihood and the severity of corporate fraud. Findings Firms with higher CSR and CSR strengths (concerns) scores have lower (higher) likelihood and lower (higher) severity of corporate fraud. This study finds that firms with higher community, employee, environment and product-related CSR have lower likelihood of fraud, and firms with higher diversity, employee, environment and product-related CSR have lower fraud severity. Practical implications Establishing a positive corporate ethical culture is essential to curb the outbreak of corporate fraud that threatens our societal norms. The findings also shed some light for investors, corporate board of directors and regulators to consider CSR as a reflection of top managers’ moral values that is negatively related to the occurrence and severity of corporate fraud. Social implications Strengthening moral values among top executives and employees in corporations by encouraging CSR activities aid our society to alleviate future outbreak of epidemic problem for corporate fraud. Originality/value This study brings a new perspective that there is a relationship between corporate ethical culture within an organization, measured by CSR activities, and corporate fraud based on the cognitive moral development theory in organization.

This study explores the corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices of Department of Tourism (DOT) accredited hotels in Pampanga, the Philippines, and their impact on branding and customer satisfaction. It investigates how CSR practices shape the hotels’ image and impact customers’ perceptions of their brands. This knowledge can help hotel managers and marketers make informed decisions aligned with Filipino consumers’ expectations. The study utilized the descriptive correlational method, assessing the influence of CSR practices on branding and customer satisfaction. Standardized tools developed by Chapple and Moon (2005) for CSR practices, Maynard and Tian (2004) for branding satisfaction, and Mincer (2008) for customer satisfaction were employed. Results showed that economic responsibility, legal responsibility, ethical responsibility, and discretionary responsibility formed a very significant set of predictors for branding satisfaction. Regression analysis revealed that the CSR of the respondents indicates that for every unit increase in the respondents’ legal accountability, ethical responsibility, and discretionary responsibility could generate 0.279, 0.18, and 0.272 improvements in the satisfaction of the customers. CSR practice helps develop a good image or branding and directly influences customer satisfaction in turn translating into repeat business therefore making profit, which is the bottom line.

Abstract Japantown Prepared, a community-based disaster preparedness organization in San José, California’s historic Japantown, began a long-term partnership with the Department of Anthropology and the Organizational Studies Program at San José State University in 2016. This article is a study of one of their many collaborative projects, a disaster preparedness Business Certification Project meant to foster the development of disaster preparedness in the Japantown Business District. The project applied principles and methods of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and social marketing by recruiting local businesses in Japantown’s popular business district to develop in-house disaster plans and then signal their preparedness with a prominently displayed certificate and a sticker with the Japantown Prepared logo in their front windows. We assess project implementation (design and recruitment) and identify opportunities for assessing the outcomes of the CSR campaign and social marketing awareness, both on other businesses in Japantown and consumers and community members. Specifically, further studies could determine whether and how businesses might build more consumer trust and social action in disaster preparedness.

In preparation for an incoming economic recession, organizations in the United States and across the globe are now actively engaging in various downsizing tactics, such as layoffs and hiring freezes, to strategically reduce their workforce. The Human Resources department then has the important responsibility of effectively managing the impact of the downsizing process by mitigating the legal, ethical, and social risks that may arise as a result of layoffs, such as helping affected employees better manage the resulting stress, and empowering surviving employees to continue productivity. While most companies focus solely on continuing business operations after layoffs and reducing legal and publicity risks, not much is done to alleviate the stress so that the organizations’ remaining employees can better cope with their new situations. This paper provides a brief overview of the concept of organizational downsizing and its effect on employees. Additionally, the paper describes the function of the HR department in the downsizing process and concludes that the HR department has a responsibility to both surviving and affected employees. This paper then examines the responsibility of the department to both parties. Keywords: Organizational downsizing, layoffs, survivor management, human resources, HR Responsibilities

The Next Steps reform is a major reorganization of the British central state which has occurred rapidly since 1988. Existing explanations of the reform largely accept the official interpretation that it was a natural development of the earlier Financial Management Initiative. However. Next Steps is radically different involving passing responsibility for the management of many executive functions to agencies whilst senior officials in departments concentrate on policy work. Next Steps occurred rather than the alternative reform of senior officials becoming hands-on managers of integrated departments carrying out executive functions. The bureau-shaping model uses an institutional rational choice approach and views reorganizations as bureau-shaping strategies by self-interested officials who attempt to achieve desired combinations of core budget and policy work time. The model is applied as an explanation of Next Steps in the Department of Social Security.

The article discusses some of the features of online learning in the system of studying social responsibility. A new understanding of the main pedagogical categories is being clarified - educational activity, learning environment, educational tasks in the conditions of modern technologized education. A scientific and theoretical review of the literature showed the versatility of studying the problem of social responsibility in various fields of sciences: philosophy (Platon, Aristotle, T. Hobbes, J. Locke, I. Kant, etc.), jurisprudence (A.R. Kornilov, A.R. Lavrent'ev, S.N. Kozhevnikov and others), psychology of personality development (S.L. Serebryakova, L.M. Arkhangelsky, A.A. Guseinov and others), pedagogy (I.Yu. Novichkova, S.P. Akunina, V.N. Lukin and others). Several scientific works on corporate social responsibility contributed to the development of this study (F. Rosati, R. Costa, A. Calabrese, J. Lee, M. Cho, etc.). The work of foreign scientists (S.L. Davis, L.M. Rives, S. Ruiz-de-Maya) "Personal social responsibility: developing and testing the scale" is of scientific and methodological value, which determines the need to develop a concept of social responsibility, which includes the individual human behavior of a person as a modern the citizen as a whole. The results of studies by J.C.R. Sousa, E.S. Siqueira, E. Binotto, L.H.N. Nobre on the perception of subjects of the educational process of universities of social responsibility, depending on the degree of discussion and the level of socialization of students, are significant. According to C. Roofe, the problem of social responsibility is not given special attention, which leads to a constant decline in the moral and spiritual component of education in the country. The diagnostic tool was a questionnaire to identify the personal attitude of teachers to the problem of social responsibility of students and the quality of work to develop the desired personality characteristics at the university. The author's questionnaire "Ideas of social responsibility" has passed the validation confirmation procedure (Alpha-Cronbach: 660927 and Standards. Alpha: 669767) by specialists of the Biostatistics sector of the Research Management Department of WKMU named after Marat Ospanov. The result of the research is the highlighted relationship of creativity with the formed cultural and social experience of the individual, which is the basis of socially responsible behavior. Highlighted as a result of observation as an initial method of empirical cognition, psychological, pedagogical, methodological features of online education will allow teachers and students to timely adjust their activities in order to achieve their goals in the system of studying students' social responsibility.

Sensitization of staff is one of the fundamental agenda behindhand of social responsibility when focused from any view. Recent years we could find emerging of many universities and colleges in and around globally. According to the UGC (University Grants Commission) Feb 2020 list, India has 935 universities includes 409 state universities, 349 private universities, 50 central universities and 127 deemed to be universities. In India, colleges and universities play a vital role in societies. Also from the Educational Statistics at A Glance (ESAG) survey published by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of School Education & Literacy Statistics Division, the study discovers that the number of private universities increases every year. Due to the decrease in the government financial support and lack of initiating the steps to make our higher education globalization, education has now been commercialized as required to house themselves in this capitalized market. This change has not only impacted the curricular edition but has also decreased the concept of social responsibility. This paper aims to bring out the challenges and discuss how universities can attain charity, sustainability and provide financial support at time of need. The study used both the primary and secondary data survey to find out the percentage of satisfactory level among the employers who are directly involved to the university.

Service-Learning (SL) is an educational approach integrating learning through experiences with community service. Several higher education institutions in Vietnam are gradually adopting this approach in recent years, although SL has been widely applied in the Western education system since the 1990s. By doing a narrative literature review, this paper aims to clarify the benefits and challenges of embedding SL in training social science subjects in high education, especially regarding mechanisms to promote participation among relevant stakeholders, including lecturers, communities and students. Through the analysis, the benefits of SL are well-equipping students with the basic knowledge of the subjects, methodology and commitment to civic responsibility. Service-Learning allows educational institutions and lecturers to enhance efficacy, effectiveness and performing social responsibility. Community members directly benefit from SL projects. Some challenges in applying SL include the need for clarity in distinguishing between volunteer work, internships and SL, resulting in the inaccurate assessment of the roles and the concerns of different stakeholders in SL. Regarding participation, there are two main challenges. The first challenge concerns organising work and effective communication between the community, universities and students. The second is about stakeholder engagement and their actual performance in SL cooperation. This paper proposes setting up an SL department as a facilitator for supporting lecturers, connecting relevant departments in the University and connecting the University with the community.

India is the first country in the world to mandate corporate social responsibility (CSR). The Government of India implemented new CSR guidelines requiring companies to spend 2 per cent of their net profit on social development. The current research intends to identify the role of human resource (HR) in institutionalizing CSR and to identify the association between employee perception towards CSR and the role of HR. The research results prove that it is apt that Indian organizations are high on CSR activities and that even employees are undertaking such activities but the formal policies and procedures are not formulated by HR department to involve the employees in CSR activities. HR needs to align the CSR and HR policies, so that the employees, who are the biggest stakeholders, get involved in internal as well as external CSR activities.

Purpose: This study was an assessment of the practice of corporate social responsibility accounting by firms in Kenya in the case of Safaricom Kenya.Methodology: A case study design was appropriate for this study. The population used in this study entailed all the 1850 employees of safaricom. Judgmental sampling was used to select the respondents i.e. 24 in number, 8 respondents from the finance department, 8 respondents from the public relations department, 4 respondents from the sales department and 4 committee members of the Safaricom foundation. Primary data was collected by the use of a questionnaire and was the main data used in the research. The data collected was analyzed by use of inferential statistics. In particular, frequency tables, averages and percentages were used. The data was then presented using tables, graphs and charts. Results: The study findings showed that to a large extent, environmental management of the production process and environmental policy were issues reported in the safaricom CSR report. In addition, climate protection and energy eco-efficiency were reported in the safaricom CSR reports to a low extent respectively. Furthermore, its practice of CSR was driven by a genuine concern for creating shareholders wealth (business case) as well as engagement and accountability. It was also observed that another motive for practicing CSR was PR based (striving to better than competitors). However, some of the challenges facing accounting for social responsibility (social accounting) were related to verifiability requirements, comparability requirements, training requirements, standardization requirements, and quantification requirements.Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The study recommended that Safaricom should maintain its trend for addressing corporate social responsibility issues and come up with measures that can be used to make social accounting in the firm to be less costly. The researcher recommended an investigative study to establish the level of usefulness of the CSR reports to various users. In addition, a correlation and a regression study explaining the relationship between CSR and firms financial performance would be in order.

Purpose Corporate social responsibility (CSR) departments are often involved with civil society organizations (CSOs) through partnerships in order to develop projects. There are valuable exchanges and adaptation experiences involved in the process that goes beyond a project’s expected outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to show how knowledge sharing in a company’s CSO partnership occurs and explain the main drivers and the kind of value that could emerge from both sides. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted a case study and analysed it according to its contribution by depicting the main drivers to boost knowledge sharing. The authors conducted interviews and supplemented them with documents and reports. Findings The study revealed learning issues from corporate and CSO sides. The authors found asymmetry in management education between companies and CSO employees. This study highlights the relevance of adjusting vocabulary to promote knowledge sharing benefits in partnerships. The presence of a “third party” in the partnership successfully helped management understand the importance of adjusting vocabulary to ease the project lifecycle flow. Originality/value The authors demonstrate how knowledge sharing as a CSR outcome improves managerial knowledge and boosts CSOs to seek opportunities for greater cooperation. The partnering possibilities become more apparent as a CSO learns how to deal with business, understands its vocabulary, context and interests. Additionally, corporate organizational learning relies on more knowledge about how CSOs operate and more information about the local community. Knowledge sharing efforts improve an organization’s commitment to develop social projects and improve the impact and legitimacy of CSR.

Organizational autonomy of the interuniversity athletic department, university responsibility for athletics, and pressure from nonuniversity individuals, groups, and organizations are all concerns related to the department's dependence on various sources in its environment for financial support. The Emerson (1962) power-dependence theory of social exchange relations, and its adaptation to the study of organization-environment relations (Pfeffer & Salancik, 1978; Thompson, 1967), guided an examination of funding and control in Canadian university athletics. This study examined whether athletic departments are perceived to be controlled by the funding sources in their environment according to their relative resource dependence upon those sources. Financial resource dependence and perceived control data were obtained from athletic directors (ADs) at 34 Canadian universities. Significant Spearman rank order correlations reveal the resource dependence-based perceived control of the university central administration, corporate sponsors, and provincial/federal sport organizations and ministries (p< .05). Of these, however, only central administration was perceived to have considerable control over the departments. Nevertheless, ADs should be aware of the resource dependence-based control potential of these other sources.

In response to business environment several organizations in the last few decades added a department having responsibility to deal with environmental related issues. Mostly the activities were dominated by legal and regulatory action and the end-of-the-pipe, technically based solutions to these issues. Their position and authority rarely offered the potential for lending value to the firm; more often, they were viewed as a cost center by top management. When businesses’ responses to environmentalism have been tied to core business decisions, however, a great deal of organizational change has been required— including overcoming the “Green Wall” between early treatment of environmental issues and the language, tools, and culture of business. Corporate leaders have been driven to evolve over time from early focus on industrial, regulatory, and social responsibility toward a mindset of the natural environment as strategic in nature. This recognition is increasingly important, especially with the rise of broader sustainable development and corporate social responsibility concerns. Clearly, environmental management and strategy has reached the executive level in many larger businesses, yet often the Green Wall remains a deeply rooted cultural obstacle in organizations.
