The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of patient satisfaction with a dentist on their loyalty to that dentist in Saudi Ministry of Health dental clinics. Retrospective data were recruited from the patient experience program (Press Ganey Survey) during the first half of 2022. Descriptive statistical analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient ( r), and multiple linear regression models were used to assess the impact on loyalty to that dentist. Among the 964 respondents who submitted their responses to the survey, the highest mean satisfaction score was for the item concerning the good listening of the dentist to the patient (3.86 of 5; 77.2%). There was a highly significant correlation between each item related to the dentist and the likelihood of the patient to recommend a certain dentist to others “that is, patient loyalty” ( P < .001). The highest predictor of patient loyalty to his dentist was the dentist's explanation of the treatment options to his patient ( t: 8.632, P < .001). Dentists have a crucial role to play in boosting patient satisfaction and thereby patient loyalty.

Clinics and hospitals as public health care service s have to be able to maximize the available resources, namely dentists. The high number of oral health problems in Indonesia requires better dentist performance. This study aims to determine the performance of dentists, the quality of dental treatment services, patient satisfaction, and the effect of dentist performance on service quality and its implications for BPJS patient satisfaction at the primary clinic in Bandung. The study used pathway analysis methods to test the effect of intervening variables on dependent and independent variables This study involved 100 BPJS patients at the primary dental clinic from 28 sub-districts in Bandung City as samples. The results of the study showed that respondent’s perception of dentist performance variables indicated that dentists had a fairly good performance in providing health care services to BPJS patients at primary clinics. Respondent’s perception of service quality variables shows that dentists provide a fairly good service quality to BPJS patients at primary clinics. Respondent’s perception of the satisfaction variable showed that BPJS patients aere satisfied with health care services at primary clinic. It can be concluded that the dentist performance variable through service quality has a significant influence on patient satisfaction.

Objectives To assess the oral health of older people who visit the community dental practice from both the dentists’ and the patients’ perspective. Materials and methods In this exploratory cross-sectional study the oral health of Dutch community dwelling older people was assessed. A representative sample of general dental practitioners was asked to randomly and prospectively select one older patient and describe this patient using a specially-developed registration form; in addition the patient was requested to complete a questionnaire. The oral health of older people was described from the perspective of the dentists and the perspective of the older people themselves based on the definition of oral health from the World Dental Federation (FDI]. Relations between oral health of older people and dentist and older patient characteristics were analysed using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (rho) and an ordinal regression model. Results In total, 923 dentists were asked to participate in the study; data was available for 39.4% dentist-patient pairs. Dentists assessed the oral health of older patients as good or acceptable in 51.4% of the cases while this was the case in 76.2% of older patients themselves. The assessment of the dentist gets more negative with high treatment intensity and with older patients having certain diseases and more medication, while the assessment is more positive for older patients who visit the dentist on a regular basis. Older people’s assessment of their oral health gets more negative by being female and with high treatment intensity, having certain diseases and higher use of medication. Conclusions and clinical relevance Chronically illness as expressed by the number of diseases and the use of medication, seems to be a risk factor for poor oral health. Older patients themselves assess their oral health differently, mostly more positive, than their dentist.

ABSTRACT Introduction Esthetic perceptions could differ between the dentist and his patients among various regions and cultures. Aim The aims of this study were to evaluate the subjective differences between the dentist and the patient in terms of esthetics of metal-ceramic crowns (MCcs). The study also aims to compare the mesiodistal (MD) and buccolingual (BL) dimensions of the cemented crown with its respective natural antimeric tooth. Materials and methods A total of 85 patients seeking treatment for a single crown (MC) were treated by the undergraduate students under supervision of respective academic staff. After cementation of the crowns, a 9-point questionnaire was given to patient and different dentists. A treatment cast for every single crown was poured. Then, the MD and BL dimensions of the crowns were compared against their respective antimeric tooth. Results The dentists and the patients agreed in the range of 50.5 to 90.5%. Least subjective differences were found for the length and width of the cemented crowns. The highest differences were noted for symmetry between the cemented crown and its antimeric natural tooth. A total of 31 to 38% of the patients differed from the dentist's evaluation for shade of the crown, color of the crown at the margin, contour of the crown, and the relationship of the crowns with the surrounding gingiva. The highest MD and BL dimensions were in the cemented crown of canines, while the lowest MD and BL diameters were for the cemented crowns of the lateral incisor crowns. Conclusion Dentist and patient mostly agreed in terms of length (90%), width (81%) and relation of crown with free gingiva (74%). However, they differed mostly on the symmetry of the cemented crowns. The highest MD dimensions and BL diameter were in the cemented MCcs of canine, while the lowest were with lateral incisors. Clinical significance While fabricating a dental prosthesis, the dentist must know about patients’ perception of esthetics; otherwise both clinical and laboratory efforts would not be enough to satisfy the esthetic needs of the patient even if the restoration is technically correct. ABSTRACT Introduction Awareness of gender- or nationality-driven preconceptions can help dentists to have a better interpretation of the dentist-patient relationship. It is even more noteworthy to understand these predilections in Saudi society, where women and men are usually segregated due to religion- and culturebased considerations. This study is one of the first to explore the preferences of patients when selecting a dentist with respect to gender and nationality in the city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods A total of 445 community residents residing in Riyadh were randomly selected for a cross-sectional study. The participants completed a survey designed to assess which of two factors (gender and/or nationality) were perceived as most relevant in choosing a dentist. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the SPSS 11.5 software. Results Female participants did not show any preference for the gender of the dentist, whereas 40% of the male participants preferred a male dentist. Participants also favored male dentists in the fields of oral surgery (78.9%), implants (74.1%), endodontics (67.5%), orthodontics (65.8%) and prosthodontics (64.2%). An exception was noted in pediatric dentistry, for which female dentists were favored by 52.8% of the participants. Additionally, most (66.1%) participants did not have any preference for the nationality of the dentist. Conclusion Riyadh residents showed a general preference for a male dentist but demonstrated no preference for nationality when selecting a dentist. Operative treatment is indicated for most toothache/dental abscesses, yet antibiotics instead of procedures are often prescribed. This ethnographic study aimed to identify clinician and patient factors influencing urgent dental care for adults during actual appointments; and to identify elements sensitive to context. Appointments were observed in out-of-hours and general dental practices. Follow-up interviews took place with dentists, dental nurses, and patients. Dentist and patient factors were identified through thematic analysis of observation records and appointment/interview transcripts. Dentist factors were based on a published list of factors influencing antibiotic prescribing for adults with acute conditions across primary health care and presented within the Capability-Opportunity-Motivation-Behaviour model. Contextually sensitive elements were revealed by comparing the factors between settings. In total, thirty-one dentist factors and nineteen patient factors were identified. Beliefs about antibiotics, goals for the appointment and access to dental services were important for both dentists and patients. Dentist factors included beliefs about the lifetime impact of urgent dental procedures on patients. Patient factors included their communication and negotiation skills. Contextual elements included dentists’ concerns about inflicting pain on regular patients in general dental practice; and patients’ difficulties accessing care to complete temporary treatment provided out of hours. This improved understanding of factors influencing shared decisions about treatments presents significant opportunity for new, evidence-based, contextually sensitive antibiotic stewardship interventions.

The choice of a pediatric dentist is a crucial decision for parents, influenced by a variety of factors. This study aimed to investigate the key determinants that guide parents in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in their selection of a pediatric dentist. A cross-sectional survey was administered to a diverse participant pool. The survey captured demographic information, history of dental visits, parents' level of concern about dental treatment for their children, and the importance of specific factors in the choice of a pediatric dentist. The survey was completed by a balanced representation of different age groups and genders. Most participants from Riyadh and other regions had a history of dental visits. Parents' concern about dental treatment varied based on the number of children they had. The most significant factors influencing the choice of a pediatric dentist were the quality of the dental unit's disinfection process, the dentist's ability to communicate with the child and manage uncooperative behaviour, and the dentist's experience. The least influential factors were the proximity of the dental office to the child's school, the dentist's gender, and the number of pediatric dentists in the practice. This study provided valuable insights into the factors that influence parents' decision in choosing a pediatric dentist in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Data helps dental professionals understand parents' priorities and improve their services accordingly to meet patient needs and expectations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has threatened the lives of many people, especially the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, as well as threatening the global economy. In response to the pandemic, many medical centers, including dental facilities, have significantly reduced the treatment of patients by limiting clinical practice to exclusively urgent, nondeferred care. Dentists are more vulnerable to contracting COVID-19, due to the necessity of the dentist being close to the patient. One of the precautions that dentists take to avoid transmitting infections is to wear a mask and gloves. However, the basic condition for nontransmission of infection is to leave a safe distance between the patient and the dentist. This system can be implemented by using an Arduino microcontroller, which is designed as a preliminary device by a dentist to examine a patient’s teeth so that a safe distance of three meters between the dentist and the patient can be maintained. The project is based on hardware and has been programmed through Arduino. The proposed system uses a small wired camera with a length of five meters that is connected to the dentist’s mobile or laptop and is installed on a robotic arm. The dentist can control the movement of the arm in all directions using a joystick at a distance of three meters. The results showed the effectiveness of this system for leaving a safe distance between the patient and the dentist. In our future work, we will control the movement of the arm via Bluetooth, and we will use a wi-fi-based camera.

Abstract Aims: The aims of the study were to assess the perception and attitude of the new generation dentist and old generation dentists toward tooth shade selection. Materials and Methods: The observations from the participants of their perception and attitude toward tooth shade selection were established with the prevalidated anonymous questionnaire, containing a total of 10 close-ended questions was obtained. Results: Among the 50 participants from each group, a significant difference of perception is seen in managing patients with tooth shade and with unrealistic patient demand. Clinicians with less experience do what is ideal for patients, while clinicians with more experience match patient demands. Furthermore, it is seen that the involvement of dental technicians is less in more experienced participants than less experienced participants. Conclusions: Older-generation dentist tends to meet the patient demands as compared to dentist with less experience by choosing what is ideal for the patient with unrealistic tooth shade demands. A shift in the trend is seen in newer generation dentist by involving dental technicians in tooth shade selection.

Dentists usually observe the tertiary dentin formation after pulp capping treatment by comparing periapical radiograph before and after treatment visually. However many dentists find difficulties to observe tertiary dentin and also they can’t measure exactly the thickness of the tertiary dentin. The aims of this study is to assist the dentists to measure the area of tertiary dentin and calculate the dentin formation using b-spline image processing. The dental radiograph of 38 patients of pulp capping in the Dental Hospital Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Each of patient visited dental hospital 3 times. First, the patient got an application of pulp capping material. Second, after one-week treatment and temporary restoration and the third, after more than one month with the composite as the final restoration. Every visited the patient take a radiograph. Dentist placed the dot from the patient's radiograph. The dots were combined and processed with digital image processing. The b-spline method changed the dot to one area. After the calculation, the dentist can see whether there was dentin formation which means it is one of the treatment success indicators. Dentist has the better view to measure the dentin formation by providing area value of its tertiary dentin thickness calculation. We compare the result to the program calculation using the b-spline method and visual observation from the dentist. This study indicated the thickness of tertiary dentin can be measured by this program with an accuracy of 94.2%. Therefore, dentist can make tertiary dentin thickness prediction from patient’s radiograph.

Background: The most significant problems in pediatric dentistry is behavioural resistance of children in the first visit. There is a debate on parental presence in operation room. The literature on dentists' preference of parental presence in the operatory is sparse. Aims: 1. To determine the percentage of dentists in a major city who prefer parental presence in the dental operatory. 2. To correlate parameters like practitioners’ gender, practice type, patient volume, and patient age in allowing parental accompaniment. 3. To determine the significant variable that constraints dentists from allowing parental presence. Methods And Materials: The study group included pediatric dentists and dentists who treat children in their private or institutional practice. Specific variables that were addressed in the questionnaire and used for the correlation included: practitioners age, gender, qualification, years in practice, practice type, volume of children treated by them, attitudes towards parental accompaniment and variables that constraints the dentist while treating children in parental presence. Results: 43% dentists felt comfortable treating children in the presence of parents. Factors like gender, practice type and volume of patients have shown to influence the attitude of dentist towards parental accompaniment. The major constraint reported by dentists is that of parents intercepting orders and thus affecting the rapport between the dentist and child (85.6%, n=89) Conclusion: The dentists practicing in this city demonstrated a positive trend towards increased parental presence in the operatory.

Interpersonal communication is a fundamental aspect of the relationship between dentists and patients. This research aims to explore the process of effective interpersonal communication in this context. Using a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, data was collected through in-depth interviews and observations of interactions between dentists and patients during the counseling process. The findings indicate that the use of easily understandable language, empathetic attitudes, supportive attitudes, positive attitudes, and equality in communication from the dentist are crucial in building a good therapeutic relationship with the patient. Most patients felt comfortable and open to sharing their problems and conditions due to the non-judgmental, empathetic, supportive, and positive attitudes of the dentist. However, professional boundaries are still necessary to maintain equality in the doctor-patient relationship. This research emphasizes the importance of effective interpersonal communication in enhancing patient satisfaction, providing treatment, and facilitating better healthcare.

This article aimed to set into perspective the unique aspects of trust within the dentist–patient relationship by exploring the literature as well as historical aspects of dentistry in the association between trust/distrust and patient anxiety. In order to characterise this uniqueness, the assumptions for trusting in dentistry are compared and contrasted with other professions using a conceptual analysis. The professions of medicine, sociology, psychology, nursing and dentistry were check listed according to the tenets of a concept analytical approach reported by Hupcey et al., in 2001. Recommendations for patient/person-centred care, as opposed to dentist-centred care, that would improve trust are specified according to the literature. These include empowering patients, practicing active listening, empathy and relationship building that might benefit dental patients in relation to the perceived risks of anxiety or induced pain. It was concluded that global distrust of dominating dentists must give way to person-centred professional strategies so that dentists and patients can tackle their dental anxiety-trust challenges, both in the public’s image of the dental profession and in clinical relationships. Future directions would be to explore incentives for dentists to change to patient/person-centred care.

ABSTRACT Aim To compare and evaluate the perceptions of esthetics among dentists and patients regarding the final esthetic outcome of a dental treatment. Background Esthetics is a matter of perception and is associated with the way different people look at an object. What constitutes esthetic for a particular person may not be acceptable for another. Hence it is subjective in nature. This becomes more obvious during the post-treatment evaluation of esthetics by dentist and the concerned patient. Opinion seldom matches. Hence, the study is a necessary part of the process of understanding the mind of dentist and patient regarding what constitutes esthetics. Technique A survey has been conducted by means of a questionnaire consisting of 10 questions, on two groups of people. First group consists of 100 dentists picked at random in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, India. Second group consisted of 100 patients who required complete denture prosthesis. The second group was divided into two subgroups A and B. Subgroup A consisting of 50 men and subgroup B consisting of 50 women. In each subgroup 25 patients were selected in age group of 40 to 50 and 25 patients were selected in the age group of 50 to 60. The questionnaire was given to both the groups and asked to fill up, which was then statistically analyzed to look for patterns of thought process among them. Results Results were subjected to statistical analysis by Student's t-test. Conclusion Perceptions of esthetics differs from dentist who is educated regarding esthetic principles of treatment and a patient who is not subjected to such education. Since, the questions were formulated such that patients could better understand the underlying problem, the final outcome of survey is a proof that dentists need to take into account what the patient regards as esthetics in order to provide a satisfactory treatment. Clinical and academic significance The current study helps the dentist to better educate the patient regarding esthetics so that patient appreciates the final scientifically based esthetic outcome of treatment. It also helps the dental students to understand the underlying patient's thought process regarding esthetics. ABSTRACTPatients with plasma cell myeloma may initially present to their dentists or dental surgeons with toothache, loose teeth, or gingival masses. An X-ray of the jaw can reveal osteolyses. In addition, accumulation of monoclonal light chains in AL-amyloidosis can lead to macroglossia. It is prudent that the dentist or dental surgeon recognizes the underlying disease and refers the patient to the oncologist or hematologist for further workup to prevent the complications of plasma cell myeloma such as renal impairment, fractures, bone pain, infections, hypercalcemia, anemia, or heart failure. Another area where the dentist or dental surgeon is involved with patients suffering from plasma cell myeloma is prevention and therapy of osteonecrosis of the jaw, occurring after administration of bisphosphonates or denosumab for osteolytic bone disease. The case report presented here shows a patient complaining of toothache for whom recognition of a systemic disease by the dentist led to the diagnosis of plasma cell myeloma, highlighting the need for interdisciplinary cooperation. Background: The biggest issue for any paediatric dentist, despite the many advancements in the field of paediatric dentistry, is to reduce patient anxiety associated with dental visits and encourage them to accept the necessary care. In order to establish a good relationship with the child, the dentist's presentation is crucial.
Aim: To assess the children’s perception and preference towards the dentist’s appearance, dental clinic set-up.
Materials and Methods: A questionnaire designed to evaluate children’s attitudes and preferences towards dentists was distributed in public schools and was completed by 1012 children (459 males, 553 females) aged between 7–13 years. Data collected was entered into a computer and analyzed using SPSS software. Descriptive and inferential analysis was carried out.
Results: For about 526 children (52%) it was their first visit while 486 children (48%) had been to the dentist before. Children’s preferred attire for receptionists was casual clothes (50.2%) while for the dentist, most of them (42.7%) preferred scrubs. Most (69.1%) of the children were not scared with the use of PPE kit.
Conclusion: The findings of this study can assist dentists in determining what to wear when working with kids to lessen their anxiety and enhance healthcare delivery.

This paper is the last in a series of six papers that have described different aspects of mentoring. It considers the impact of mentoring when it is used in general dental practice, applying the technique of learning through positive psychology. The first part of the paper considers this approach from a patient's perspective, the second from the perspective of a dentist. Because the impact on the quality of care for the patient is largely mediated through the personality of the dentist, the quality of the dentist's own performance, during his/her professional relationship with the patient, is a critical ingredient. The way that this critical ingredient impacts on quality of care is considered and parallels are drawn between roles assumed in dental practice and those found in industry. The paper also considers the way in which mentoring, as a part of a professional development programme, can enhance dentists’ personal skills and performance. It is an opportunity for great personal growth, with increased levels of job and life satisfaction, leading to greater levels of authentic happiness for all those involved, not least for dentists and the dental team.

Abstract Objective: This study tested the hypothesis that the quality of treatment outcomes and overall patient satisfaction are of equal importance in influencing a general dentist to refer a patient to an orthodontist for treatment. The investigation also attempted to determine what specific aspects of an orthodontically treated occlusion comprise an outstanding result in the opinion of the general dentist. Materials and Methods: Self-administered surveys containing 35 questions were distributed to a random sample of 1000 general dentists in the midwestern United States. Results: Three-quarters responded that the quality of previous orthodontic treatment and patient/ parental satisfaction were of equal importance in the orthodontic referral decision. If additional factors were considered, the quality of the treated result as judged by the general dentist was far more important than the location of the orthodontist's office, the reputation of the orthodontist, or the anticipated cost of treatment. With regard to desired postorthodontic occlusal and functional characteristics, the majority of the dentists ranked canine guidance as most important. Other characteristics were Class I molar and canine relationships, even contact of all teeth in centric occlusion, amount of overjet and overbite, absence of spacing, and absence of balancing interferences. Conclusions: The decision of the general dentist to refer a patient to one orthodontist over another is based on a number of interactive factors. It behooves the orthodontic clinician to provide high-quality treatment, to interact well with his or her patients and their families, and to maintain good communications with general practitioners in the community.

Abstract Agency problems are a defining characteristic of healthcare markets. We present the results from a field experiment in the market for dental care: a test patient who does not need treatment is sent to 180 dentists to receive treatment recommendations. In the experiment, we vary the socio-economic status of the patient and whether a second opinion signal is sent. Furthermore, measures of market, practice and dentist characteristics are collected. We observe an overtreatment recommendation rate of 28% and a striking heterogeneity in treatment recommendations. Furthermore, we find significantly fewer overtreatment recommendations for patients with higher socio-economic status compared with lower socio-economic status for standard visits, suggesting a complex role for patients’ socio-economic status. Competition intensity, measured by dentist density, does not have a significant influence on overtreatment. Dentists with shorter waiting times are more likely to propose unnecessary treatment.

The novel Coronavirus (nCoV-19) pandemic began in Wuhan, China with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in December, 2019. The virus transmitted from China to other countries by traveling of the infected individuals. The number of infected populations with Coronavirus is increasing day by day with an increased mortality rate. The signs and symptoms of the disease include fever, non-productive cough, dyspnea, and fatigue. The transmission routes of the virus include respiratory secretions or droplet infection and direct contact with the infected person. Dentists are a group of professionals that are highly exposed to infectious diseases. The nCoV-19 is transmitted from patient to dentist and dentist to patient mainly through aerosol and splatter produced by the dental procedure and saliva of an infected person. To avoid transmission of the virus from patient to dentist and from dentist to other patients, screening tests should be done at dental setups. The use of gloves, face shields, masks, gowns, and antiseptic handwash are mandatory for the dentist. Awareness programs should be conducted to prevent further transmission of the disease. This prospective observational study had two aims: (I) to assess whether a preoperative dental screening before endoprosthesis (EP) implantation with need-based dental intervention would decrease the prevalence of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) and (II) to evaluate whether instructed orthopedic surgeons would achieve similar results in oral screening as dentists. The preoperative oral health statuses of the patients, prior to EP insertion, were either evaluated by the patients’ general dentists (Ia) or, if the patient had not visited a general dentist, by an instructed orthopedic surgeon (Ib). Both the dentist and orthopedic surgeon used standardized risk estimation (low risk, moderate risk, and high risk) for an oral-health-related infectious complication after EP insertion, including a recommendation for further management of the patient. If required, a need-based dental rehabilitation was performed. In addition, retrospective data evaluation of a comparison group (II) was performed, which had not been screened orally preoperatively. A total of 777 patients (screening group (I): n = 402, of which 229 were screened by a dentist (Ia), 173 were screened by an orthopedic surgeon (Ib); comparison group (II): n = 375) were included. No general association between early infection rate and preoperative oral screening in general was found (1% PJI in screening group (I), 1.6% PJI in comparison group (II); p = 0.455). However, screening performance (dentist vs. orthopedic surgeon) had a significant impact on the prevalence of developed PJIs (p = 0.021). Thereby, 100% of observed infections in the screening group (I) occurred in the group with previous oral screening by an orthopedic surgeon (Ib). Furthermore, the C-reactive protein (CRP) value at discharge was significantly lower when general preoperative oral screening had been performed (group I vs. group II, p = 0.03). Only preoperative oral screening by a dentist had the potential to reduce oral-focus-associated EP infections; therefore, increased attention should be paid to the further promotion of interdisciplinary work between dentists and orthopedic surgeons. Dental screenings, using objectifiable criteria, as applied in this study, seem reasonable but require further validation in larger cohorts.

Objective. To investigate public trust in dentists, fear of dentists, factors related to trust, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the trust in dentists. Materials and Methods. We used an Arabic online anonymous survey to collect data from a random population of 838 adults to investigate public trust in dentists, the factors they perceive to affect trust, their perception of key factors in the dentist-patient relationship, fear of dentists, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the level of their trust in the dentists. Results. Eight hundred thirty-eight subjects with a mean age of 28.5 responded to the survey (595 (71%) females, 235 (28%) males, and 8 (1%) did not specify their gender). More than half trust their dentist. The COVID-19 pandemic did not decrease trust in dentists according to 62.2%. There were significant gender differences in reporting fear of dentists ( p < 0.001 ) and in the perception of factors affecting trust ( p = 0.028 ). Honesty was chosen by 583 (69.6%), competence by 549 (65.5), and dentist’s reputation by 443 (52.9%). Conclusions. The findings of this study show that the majority of the public trust dentists, more females reported fear of dentists, and the majority perceived honesty, competence, and reputation as key factors affecting trust in the dentist-patient relationship. The majority reported that the COVID-19 pandemic did not have a negative impact on their trust in dentists.

Teledentistry falls under virtual dental care where use of virtual communication is in between dentist and the patient to provide dental care and education to patients. Patients receive virtual examinations and are provided consultation, diagnosis, treatment planning, guidance, transmission of dental information and education via tele-communications. During this COVID-19 pandemic it has offered a solution to resume dental practice as a tool ensuring safety for all. Pediatric teledentistry helps by saving time, allowing child- dentist interaction before the visit and reducing stress for patients, guardians and dentists. Telescreening and teletriage can be implemented publically into routine dental practice and also as a triage-based emergency management strategy as it provides an effective compromise between limiting patient admission, ensuring their pain control and symptom relief.

Introduction: Dentist attire has been molded by tradition and fashion over centuries. There have been many changes in thedental field and patient expectations and with increased proportion of female doctors entering the profession has led to changes in dentist dress code. White coats were worn by dentist for professionalism, identification and hygiene, yet white coats may be a source of, rather than a barrier to cross infection. Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the patients opinion toward dentist appearance, clinical attire, cross infection control, years of experience, and their expectations from their dentist.
Materials and Methods: Patients attending a dental hospital for a consultation appointment were asked to complete a close-ended questionnaire comprising 12 questions. A representative sample of patients completed 100 questionnaires over a period of 4 weeks. Their responses were tabulated and analyzed statistically.
Results: The study found that majority of patient preferred their own gender dentist and they preferred young dentist with 1–5 years of experience. Some patients preferred dentist wearing white coat while some patients were comfortable with whatever the dentist was wearing. The majority of patients preferred dentist wearing name badge and personal protective equipment. The majority of patients also preferred treatment from colleges and hospitals and preferred dentist who has done MDS/specialization. The majority of patients were more comfortable with dentist who is smiling, welcoming, and being friendly. Some patients preferred their dentist to talk more while some preferred their dentist to talk appropriately and few patients preferred their dentist to talk less. Dentist having long nails and malaligned or fractured teeth bothered some patient while it did not bother some patients and some patients did not notice it.
Conclusion: A considerable amount of research dealing with the professional image of health-care providers has been produced, but very little of this has been specific to the practice of dentistry. Hence, it is hoped that this study will be informative for dental team and the results should be taken into consideration.

This research aims to explore the dental students’ perceptions of the need for dental English education to improve communication skills competency between foreign patients and dentists. In this study, a total of 137 Korean dental school students participated and were divided into two groups based on their direct patient care experience (Yes: 44 students and No: 93 students). The questionnaire composed of 5-point Likert scale questions, multiple-choice grid questions, and open-ended questions, was administered to investigate dental students’ responses and additional opinions on communication skills in patient- and foreign patient-dentist interaction. Findings indicate that dental students were highly aware of the need for education on communication skills between patients and dentists regardless of the patient’s nationality. Interestingly, when comparing group results based on direct patient care experience, students without direct care experience showed a high need for education in patient-dentist communication skills. Surprisingly, the quantitative results of this research were also supported by their responses and the open-ended questions of the questionnaire (qualitative results). This research suggests that communication skills education in dental education plays a key role in developing the student’s competency in communication skills between patient-foreign patient-dentists. More detailed results, discussions, and pedagogical implications of the findings are given for dental English education and further potential research directions.

Background: Special needs patients (SNPs) are one of the underserved dental patient worldwide. A compromised oral health condition amongst SNPs has been associated with shortage of skills of dental professionals in management. Objective: to determine the level of knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of Libyan dentists towards caring for SNPs. Methods: A cross sectional study including Libyan dentist in public and private dental clinics in Benghazi. Data were collected from a representative sample by using a modified questionnaire. Results: In the total sample (234), 32.1% of participants were males and 67.9% were females. More than half of them lacking knowledge about dealing with severely mentally disabled patient while more than 63% of dentists know major barriers in treating SNPs and more than 66% of respondent consider lecture as main source of their knowledge about special care dentistry.
Most of them do not believe that all mental disabled patients need sedation before treatment, majority of respondent believe that the communication between dentist and special needs patients will be effective in treatment, and most of dentists did not feel confident in providing care for them. 90.2% of respondent use non-pharmacological method of behavior control rather than sedation and general anesthesia .Around 90% of participants cannot manage mentally disable patients in their clinics with around 70% did not have the facilities for treating SNPs at their dental clinics.
Conclusion: Dentists were lacking knowledge about dealing with severe mentally disabled patients, meanwhile they had a good knowledge regarding major barriers in treating SNPs. They had a positive attitude that they believe not all mental disabled patients need sedation before treatment and the communication between dentist and special needs patient will be effective in treatment while they had a negative attitude that they did not feel confident in providing care for them, they cannot manage mentally disable patients in their clinics. There is a good issues that dentists use of non-pharmacological methods to prepare them for dental visits.

Information about oral health available on the Internet, videos of dental procedures on YouTube, and Facebook groups, whose members are dentists, have contributed to dentistry finding its place online. Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the attitudes and behavior of student population towards: dental marketing on Instagram, patient-dentist relationship through social media, and information about oral health found on the Internet. Participants and Methods: The research included 226 students of the University of Niš, who participated in an anonymous online survey of 16 questions created in Google Forms. Results: Every sixth respondent from those who follow a dental office on Instagram have chosen the office because of Instagram. Females search for dentists more frequently on the Internet than males. Most of the respondents, who are friends with dentist on a social network, still most often contact them by phone. The oldest respondents do not find it appropriate to be friends with a dentist on social media. The majority of those who are unsure about the accuracy of oral health informations from the Internet, do not discuss them with their dentist. Conclusion: Instagram does not play a key role in the choice of a dentist among respondents, and communication with a dentist through social media is less prevalent than other forms of communication with a dentist. However, more than half of the respondents consult the Internet before going to the dentist.

Dental and oral health is essential for every individual, especially for carrying out functions such as eating, speaking, aesthetics and feeling comfortable throughout the day. Dentists recommend checking the patient's oral health every six months. The Covid-19 pandemic limits the community's social conditions, including the need for patients to get dental and oral services from dentists. In addition, the professional activity of a dentist is one of the jobs most at risk of contracting Covid-19 from patients. A social service activity aims to introduce the Teledentistry method to patients, Co-ass students, Preceptors, and the general public. Teledentistry is the examination and consultation of dental and oral disorders and treatment of patients to the dentist without going through a face-to-face visit, but with the help of an online application. Through teledentistry activities, a dentist can take anamnesis to patients, in which clinical examinations were carried out through consultation with pictures and videos facilitated by interactive virtual media. The oral diagnosis was obtained as initial information in planning further treatment, and supportive care was carried out in the form of patient education and an encouragement to habituation of healthy living behaviour.

Aim: to evaluate the association of the patients’ perception about dentist’s affect and cognition on trust and, consequently, on intention to return and patient satisfaction with life. Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study conducted in patients’ adults and elderly at of two dentistry clinics in the south of Brazil. Patients had to have a previous relationship with the dentist (at least one previous consult) and 18 years of age or older. The data were collected through self-administrated questionnaire using measures adapted from other research, using structural equation modeling. We test using a chi-square difference test (p-value<0,05). Results: The mean age of the 197 patients was 37.0 years (σ = 15.5). The affect perceived by the patient at the dentist had a positive effect (β = .53) on the trust that the patient develops in relation to the dentist. The same is true for the effect of the rational or cognitive aspects perceived by the patient at the dentist (β = .41). The trust positively influences the patient’s intention to return to that dentist (β = .82). In addition, the intention to return to the dentist positively influences the patient’s satisfaction with life (β = .49). Conclusions: Affective and cognitive aspects positively influenced the patient’s trust in the dentist. The greater the patient’s trust in the dentist, the greater the intention to return to that dentist. Furthermore, a good relationship with the dentist improve the patient’s satisfaction with life.

Background: Children who have been abused could exhibit lesions and diseases in their oral cavity and develop psychological consequences towards the dentist-patient relationship. Objectives: Analyse the oral lesions and diseases, the psychological consequences and understand the role of the dentist in the detection and notification of child abuse. Methods: Systematic review, according to PRISMA statement, with two search strategies in the MEDLINE/PubMed database. 19 publications were included after the application of selection and eligibility criteria. Results: Physical-abuse-related lesions and Münchausen syndrome are not pathognomonic; this requires the detection of indicators of suspicion. Physical-neglect diseases usually have associated other chronic health problems. Specifically, diseases related to sexual abuse are the oral infection caused by Treponema pallidum and Neisseria gonorrhoeae; while other lesions and diseases might only suggest abuse. The most frequent psychological sign of child abuse in the dentist-patient relationship is dental phobia. Typically, when detecting and notifying, dentist face the following barriers: insufficient information; fear of wrong suspicion; impact in the professional practice; fear of consequences on the minor; fear of violence against the dentist; lack of knowledge of necessary documents/procedures; fear of judicial statement. Conclusions: Child-abuse-related lesions and diseases often appear in the oral region. Dentists play a fundamental role in the detection and notification of those. It is essential to establish training and action protocols as well as reliance strategies in the patient-dentist relationship.

In order to protect the team and the patients and stop the virus from spreading, it is crucial that dentists improve their knowledge and preventative measures because they come into direct and close contact with the patient aerosols. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on dental practice by conducting a questionnaire among the Libyan dental practitioners. Materials and Methods: Our study population consisted of dentists, a questionnaire was distributed to 50 dentist (36 female and 14 male) the questionnaire was assessing knowledge, attitude, risk perception, and preparedness towards COVID-19, infection control measures and assessing dentist's fear potential financial loss and the risk of being infected. Results: The study sample included 50 dentists, and the majority of participants were knowledgeable about COVID-19's transmission, incubation time, and primary symptoms. In addition, 72% of participants updated the WHO's current cross-infection guidelines for COVID-19. Conclusion: Although dentists' knowledge of COVID-19 is generally adequate, it should be made better in order to improve patients management and stop the spread of COVID-19.

In the current era of globalization, there is increasing public demand for dental and oral health services. Along with the increasing demand for dental and oral health services, many new hospitals are present, as well as with the increasing demand for medical personnel, especially dentists. The large number of hospitals present encourage consumers to be selective in choosing health services with good quality. This problem causes competition among health service providers. For this reason, companies are required to carry out dynamic changes, so that they can remain competitive and survive with other companies. One of the strategies that must be carried out by the company is to pay attention to its human resources. Human resources play a very important role for the company, because human resources are a driving force in the company's activities in order to achieve the strategic goals planned beforehand. Coupled with a decrease in the number of patient visits in the last 7 months. Human resources are the main key in solving this problem. This research is a quantitative research. The population used was permanent dentists and the sample used was total sampling (all populations were sampled), totaling 58 permanent dentists. This research was analyzed using SPSS 25. The results of this research are 1) Motivation, competence, work environment and job satisfaction simultaneously influences dentist performance 2) Motivation partially influences dentist performance 3) Competence partially influences dentist performance 4) Work environment partially influences dentist performance 5) Job satisfaction partially influences dentist performance.

An observational cross-sectional survey was planned to analyze the weekly workload reduction of German dentists during lockdown due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were predominantly members of the Free Association of German Dentists and filled in an online questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent to a total of 9416 dentists, with a response rate of 27.98% (n = 2635). Respondents were divided into seven macro areas by gross domestic product. Nearly two-thirds of dentists (65.16%) reported a reduction in their practice workload of more than 50% compared to the pre-pandemic period with statistically significant differences between German macro areas (p < 0.01). Weekly workload was reduced during the lockdown in 93.00% of study participants, while 55.33% dental care centers with multiple employed dentists under the direction of a non-dentist general manager had only a 40% reduction in weekly workload compared to a solo practice or a practice of a dentist with an employed dentist (30.24% and 28.39%, respectively). Dentists in Germany drastically reduced their practice activity during the first wave of the COVID-19 lockdown, both in rural and urban areas. Short, medium, and long-term effects of the pandemic on dental practices, dental staff as well as patient care need to be further investigated.

Considerable resources are expended in dealing with dental disease easily prevented with better oral hygiene. The study hypothesis was that an evidence-based intervention, framed with psychological theory, would improve patients’ oral hygiene behavior. The impact of trial methodology on trial outcomes was also explored by the conducting of two independent trials, one randomized by patient and one by dentist. The study included 87 dental practices and 778 patients (Patient RCT = 37 dentists/300 patients; Cluster RCT = 50 dentists/478 patients). Controlled for baseline differences, pooled results showed that patients who experienced the intervention had better behavioral (timing, duration, method), cognitive (confidence, planning), and clinical (plaque, gingival bleeding) outcomes. However, clinical outcomes were significantly better only in the Cluster RCT, suggesting that the impact of trial design on results needs to be further explored.

Looks are becoming a major concern in dentistry. Patients want beautiful smiles, no matter how complex their case. Dentists and lab technicians have relied on established esthetic principles for smile design, aiming for a pleasing patient outcome. Ideally, a well-designed smile brings happiness to the dentist and the patient, exceeding expectations beyond straight teeth. However, sometimes the final results fall short. This can happen when the smile design clashes with the patient's unique characteristics. Patient desires and the need for better information are forcing dentists to rethink how customized smile design should be. Ignoring this customization can lead to disappointment, even if all the standard esthetic rules were followed.

Teledentistry is an online dental care service that allows patients and dentists to meet in real time, safely, without being at the same location. During the COVID-19 pandemic, real-time videoconferencing has gained popularity in the field of teledentistry, with numerous benefits for both patients and dentists. Online consultations can minimize costs, maximize time, and provide more convenient care options for both patients and dentists. When practicing teledentistry, a dentist must establish a good doctor–patient relationship. Dentists must ensure that the telecommunication solution that they choose meets their clinical requirements and complies with privacy laws. Dentists should provide adequate information to patients about the limitations, advantages, and disadvantages that may occur during online consultation. Dentists must follow guidelines and procedures regarding informed consent, patient details, personal communications, and consultancies’ privacy and confidentiality. The patient should be aware of the limitations of teledentistry, and dentists will provide the best advice possible in the absence of a face-to-face consultation. This article discusses how teledentistry could be an effective tool for dentists and patients.

The development of aesthetic rehabilitation techniques in the field of dentistry has resulted in a paradigm shift in the field of restoration and aesthetics. Dentists plan care for patients need to do a good analysis, not only thinking about the treatment of one tooth but on all teeth that interfere with aesthetics when the patient smiles, especially for patients with bruxism and very worn teeth. A dentist must be able to choose treatments that are appropriate to the situation and condition of the patient. A di-gital smile design is used to formulate an overall mouth rehabilitation treatment plan using a combination of materials and conventional and digital methods. The different strengths of conventional and digital methods, make the combination of these two methods an adequate choice and represent the best part of both methods in contemporary dental practice. In the selection of restorative material in patients with bruxism and very worn teeth, the dentist must consider the patient's dental wear.

Objective: This study aimed to identify the key aspects of patients’ dental care experience that influenced their self-perceived satisfaction and loyalty. Also examined was the agreement between patients and dentists regarding these factors. Methods: Questionnaires were administered to 1121 patients and 77 dentists, focusing on demographic information and 15 selected items related to the patients’ last dental visit. Descriptive and linear regression analyses were conducted. Results: The study included participants from 41 practices. Factors significantly influencing satisfaction and loyalty included location convenience, treatment quality, trust in dentists’ decisions, visit frequency satisfaction, clear treatment explanations, dentist’s interest in symptoms, patient-dental personnel attachment, and dentist’s knowledge of the patient and their medical records. While overall agreement between patients and dentists was high, some areas exhibited notable disagreement. Conclusions: The findings mostly align with existing literature, underscoring the importance of communication, trust, and a personal patient-dentist relationship in promoting satisfaction and loyalty. However, they also show that local, generally not reported factors might be at play, which necessitates dentists’ awareness and consideration of the local context for optimal outcomes.

Objective: of this study is to analyze the behavior/attitude of general dental practitioners towards record keeping and quality assessment of patient records found in different dental practices of Lahore. Study design: Cross sectional, Descriptive, Questionnaire based study (Copy of questionnaire attached). Place and Duration of Study: Data collection for this study was conducted in different private dental practices of Lahore from Oct-2017 to Dec-2017. Methods; A random sample of 60 dental practices were selected by means of stratified sampling from different towns of Lahore. Dentists were interviewed and patient records were checked for data collection which is analyzed using SPSS version 23. Results: Interview of 43 dentists and analysis of patient records from their practices revealed that 16 (37.2%) practices have no record at all and even none of the remaining 27 (62.8%) practices. Who claim to have patient records, has any properly completed record. Shows that dentists have got very casual behavior towards record keeping as most of them were not having any records and the remaining ones who claimed to have patient records, were maintaining them in a very poor form. Conclusion: Female dentists, postgraduates and dentists working in group practices and affluent areas were found to have relatively more tendency towards record keeping. Recommendation; Dentist training institutes and health implementing authorities are the main areas which need to be stressed upon for improvement of record keeping. Introduction: Several studies have shown that a dentist’s gender and nationality are important factors for patients when they choose their dentist. This topic is important in countries like Saudi Arabia, which is considered to be conservative and has many cultural boundaries that separate men from women in daily activities. Aim: This study aimed to investigate patient preference for a dentist’s gender among a sample population in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 1,000 participants who completed a self-administered questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS v.21. Results: A total of 46.2% of the participants had no particular gender preference for dentists in general, while 28.6% prefered male dentists and 25.2% prefered female dentists. Male and female participants had statistically significant differences in the selection of a dentist’s gender in general, with all participants tending to choose a dentist of the same gender as themselves. Previous personal experience and recommendations from friends were among the most influential factors in choosing dentists of a specific gender. In terms of preferences for dentists of a particular nationality, 45.6% had no preferences, while 28.4% preferred Saudi dentists. Conclusion: Although half of the Jeddah residents participating in our study had no preference for dentists of a particular gender or nationality, the other half had specific preferences.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to measure the satisfaction of patients treated in a dental hospital using a validated questionnaire on patient-dentist communication and investigate factors associated with satisfaction. Patients in the dental clinic answered 2 questionnaires: Dental Patient Feedback on Consultation (DPFC) and another regarding their oral health perceptions using a visual analog scale (VAS) and sociodemographic backgrounds. The correlation between patient’s satisfaction and other numerical variables was determined using Spearman's test. The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare the patient’s satisfaction scores and the categories of the independent variables (p≤0.05). The median DPFC score was 2.9. All participants were very satisfied considering the active dentist listening (Q3) and the dental treatment advices (Q16). The lowest score was observed about family habits and medical history in oral health (Q9:2.0). With respect to their oral health perceptions, the majority of the participants demonstrated satisfaction with their chewing, smile and dental aesthetics. Being younger than 40 years influenced the satisfaction with oral health satisfaction when the VAS score was analyzed. The skin colour (p=0.001 and p=0.005) and the marital status (p=0.001 and p=0.006) of the participants also demonstrated a statistically positive signiticant correlation between DPFC and VAS scores, respectively. There was a high level of patient’s satisfaction with the ability of the dentist to communicate in the dental hospital analyzed. Age, color skin, and the marital status of patients interfered in the satisfaction about patient-dentist communication and their oral health perception. Keywords: Communication. Hospitais. ResumoO objetivo deste estudo foi mensurar a safisfação de pacientes tratados em um hospital utilizando um questionário validado baseado na comunicação dentista-paciente e investigar os fatores associados a esta satisfação. Os pacientes da clínica omparer responderam 2 questionários: Dental Patient Feedback on Consultation (DPFC) e outro a respeito das percepções relacionadas a saúde ompar utilizando uma ompar visual analógica (EVA) e dados sociodemográficos. A correlação entre a satisfação dos pacientes e outras variáveis numéricas foi determianda através do teste de Spearman. Os testes de Kruskal-Wallis e Mann-Whitney foram usados para omparer os escores de satisfação dos pacientes e as variáveis categóricas independents (p≤0,05). O escore mediano do DPFC foi de 2,9. Todos os participantes estavam muito satisfeitos considerando a escuta ativa do dentista (Q3) e as recomendações sobre o tratamento dentário (Q16). O escore mais baixo foi relacionado aos hábitos familiares e história médica relacionada a saúde bucal (Q9:2.0). Em relação as percepções em relação a saúde bucal, a maioria dos participantes demonstrou satisfação com a mastigação, sorrisco e estética dental. Ter menos de 40 anos influenciou a satisfação com a saúde bucal quando a escala EVA foi utilizada. A cor da pele (p=0,001 and p=0,005) e a relação conjugal (p=0,001 and p=0,006) também demonstraram uma significância estatística positiva entre o DPFC e a escala EVA, respectivamente. Foi observado um alto nível de satisfação dos pacientes em relação a habilidade de comunicação do dentista no hospital analisado. <p>Evaluation for the capitation payment system to the primary care dentist contracted by the Indonesian National Health Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan) needs to be done as a basis for future improvements. This study aimed in describing the utilization of dental services; the average services fee received for each type of service; the level of patient satisfaction on dental service; the dentist level of satisfaction on the capitation payment system; and analyzing the suitability of capitation rates with generally accepted rates in the area of Central Java and Yogyakarta. Quantitative primary data was collected through questionnaires by dentists and their patients. While qualitative primary data was collected by Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Dentists involved in the FGD was selected by purposive sampling by local Indonesian Dental Association (PDGI) chairman. Secondary data of independent primary care dental practice was taken from BPJS Kesehatan. As a result, 26.76 % of primary care dentists have small number of insured patients (2001-5000). Real unit cost average was around IDR350,000 per visit. Most of the subjects (73.77 %) stated that they quite satisfied with the capitation payment system, but not with the nominal value. Most of the patients (98.5 %) were satisfied with the dental services. In conclusion, capitation nominal value needs to be adjusted with a detailed benefit packages. Enrollment-based membership mechanism needs to be evaluated. Routine monitoring and evaluation meetings between BPJS Kesehatan and primary care dentist needs to be done every 3 months, accompanied by PDGI.<br></p>

Dental extractions are potentially an unpleasant experience that patients have to undergo. Not only are they losing a tooth that they may have invested significant costs in retaining, but fear and expectation of pain makes the encounter stressful and terrifying for most. Dental extractions are the most common surgery undertaken worldwide, and usually on conscious patients, unlike other branches of surgery. Patients' most common fear of the dentist is the pain during and after surgery and the experience of injections, both guaranteed when undergoing extractions at the dentist. Despite universities aiming to make undergraduate dentists able to undertake routine exodontia, ability remains limited. This may be due to foundation training limiting access to routine exodontia practice or a reluctance on behalf of dentists in general to undertake surgical interventions due to their high risk, patient sequelae or risk of complications, which are perceived as poor practice builders. CPD/Clinical Relevance: This paper aims to provide some clinical tips and information that will assist practitioners in undertaking dental extractions.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the satisfaction of patients regarding the facilities, services, and quality of treatment received at dental clinics of the College of Dentistry at Qassim University. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the educational dental clinics of the College of Dentistry at Qassim University. The study used a modified questionnaire that was based on Othman to estimate the patients’ satisfaction factors affecting it. The questionnaire consisted of four sections: Appointment, clinic and facilities, patient-dentist interaction, and efficiency of treatment. Results: About 79.5% of the distributed questionnaires were collected from patients who received treatment at the dental clinic at Qassim University College of Dentistry. Most of the patients were satisfied with appointments (93.18%). About 9.4% of patients mentioned that the dentists are talking to each other during providing treatment but most (92.79%) of patients were satisfied with dentist interaction. About the efficiency of treatment, most of the patients (89.36%) were satisfied with dental care and most of them (99.1%) mentioned that privacy during treatment has been maintained. Overall satisfaction from all items patients was satisfied 90.29% with dental services provided at which denoting an elevated high level of satisfaction. Conclusion: Overall most of the patients who received treatment at the dental clinic in Qassim University were satisfied 90.29% with the appointments, clinic and facilities, patient-dentist interaction, and efficiency of treatment they received.

Soft skills include communication skills and personality traits that are important when choosing a dentist, but other factors within the dental office also seem to be important for patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate factors that are important to people in a dentist as well as characteristics of the ideal dentist and to evaluate possible age-, gender-, and residence of living specific differences. A telephone survey with participants aged 35 years or older (ag—age group: ag 1: 35–50 years, ag 2: 70–84 years, ag 3: >85 years) in three German cities was conducted. Data were analyzed with respect to gender and age. Most of the participants (n = 298, 64.2%), regardless of their own gender, age, or place of residence did not care about the gender of the dentist. In general, the price of the treatment does not play a role in choosing the ideal dentist. Women differ significantly from men in their choice of dentist (ANOVA p < 0.001 (preference of non-smoker), ANOVA p < 0.001 (preference, that the dentist does not smell of smoke, importance of appearance (ANOVA p < 0.001) and psycho-social skills, etc.). As age increases, professional experience and psycho-social competencies are rated as important. With the increase in age, the mean value of the desired years of professional experience increases without significant differences between age groups. The importance of advanced training (ANOVA p < 0.001; Bonferoni correction: significant difference between ag 1 and ag 2 p < 0.001, and ag 1 and ag 3 p < 0.001) decreases with age. Especially for participants aged 70 to 84 years, a relationship of trust is important. Between the places of residence, statistical differences for almost all surveyed items were found (e.g., importance that the dentist speaks the patients’ native language ANOVA p < 0.001, Bonferoni correction: significant difference between Berlin and Leipzig, Berlin and Mainz, and Leipzig and Mainz (each p < 0.001), dentist has a specialization ANOVA p < 0.001, Bonferoni correction: significant difference between Berlin and Leipzig and Berlin and Mainz (each p < 0.001), etc.). Dentists should be trained to develop psycho-social skills to meet the special demands of the increasing older population.

Objective : Dental pain is a common symptom that most often causes patient to seek dentist. A survey conducted by the American Association of Endodontics revealed that more than half patients who come to dentist have experienced pain, which originate from the teeth or of the surrounding tissue, can causes difficulties in handling, also the anxiety of the patient. Understanding the pain experienced by patient will help dentist to determine when to make an action. Most patient being fear with pain, so they delay to get treatment from dentist, and lead to the development of further infection and inflammation. The aim of this paper is to improve the understanding of pharmacology and procedures for pain and anxiety management in endodontic treatment. So, it is important to determine accurate diagnosis, management and drug administration.
