AbstractIn this chapter, the author examines her experience of education as a Latinx in the United States, first as a student, and then as a teacher, through the intersectionality of language bias, racism, and elitism. Producing autoethnographic research acknowledges and validates her Latinx presence and draws attention to her marginal position inside the dominant structures of education. This autoethnography puts the critical focus on her experiences within the broader context of education (Denzin NK, Interpretive ethnography: ethnographic practices for the 21st century. Sage, 1997). This personal narrative (Bochner AP, Narrat Inq 22:155–164, 2012) employs the theoretical frameworks of critical race theory and Latinx critical race theory (CRT; Delgado R, Stefancic J, Critical race theory: an introduction. University Press, 2001) to explore the tensions of being Latinx in the United States education system. This cultural analysis considers personal, social, and culturally constructed identities. The author discusses the everyday negotiations between Latinx culture and teaching in an elementary school. Centering the critical framework, the author interrogates how society shapes our narratives, identities, and lives (Kehly MJ, Gend Educ 7:23–31, 1995) through culture, power, and language.

Kiyotomi Kaneda of Osaka University devised (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2010, 49, 5545) gold nanoparticles that efficiently deoxygenated an epoxide 1 to the alkene 2. Robert G. Bergman of the University of California, Berkeley, and Jonathan A. Ellman, now of Yale University, reported (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 11408) a related protocol for deoxygenating 1,2-diols. Dennis A. Dougherty of Caltech established (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 3990) that an acid chloride 3 could be reduced to the phosphonate 4. Pei-Qiang Huang of Xiamen University effected (Synlett 2010, 1829) reduction of an amide 5 by activation with Tf2O followed by reduction with NaBH4. André B. Charette of the Université de Montreal described (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 12817) parallel results with Tf2O/Et3SiH. David Milstein of the Weizmann Institute of Science devised (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 16756) a Ru catalyst for the alternative reduction of an amide 7 to the amine 8 and the alcohol 9. Shi-Kai Tian of the University of Science and Technology of China effected (Chem. Commun. 2010, 46, 6180) reduction of a benzylic sulfonamide 10 to the hydrocarbon 11. Thirty years ago, S. Yamamura of Nagoya University reported (Chem. Commun. 1967, 1049) the efficient reduction of a ketone to the corresponding methylene with Zn/HCl. Hirokazu Arimoto of Tohoku University established (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 4534) that a modified Zn/TMSCl protocol could be used following ozonolysis to effect conversion of an alkene 12 to the methylene 13. José Barluenga and Carlos Valdés of the Universidad de Oviedo effected (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2010, 49, 4993) reduction of a ketone to the ether 16 by way of the tosylhydrazone 14. Kyoko Nozaki and Makoto Yamashita of the University of Tokyo and Dennis P. Curran of the University of Pittsburgh found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 11449) that the hydride 18 (actually a complex dimer) could effect the direct reduction of a halide 17 and also function as the hydrogen atom donor for free radical reduction and as the hydride donor for the Pd-mediated reduction of an aryl halide.

Beginning with early twentieth-century literature, the first chapter takes the reader on a tour through the development of science fiction writing as a genre, and the influence of Classics on it. The works of authors such as Arthur Conan Doyle, S. P. Meek, Dennis Wheatley, Lester Del Rey, John Russell Fearn, Leigh Brackett, Henry Kuttner, Isaac Asimov, J. G. Ballard and Michael Moorcock are explored, along with (amongst others) fascination with Atlantis and the Amazons, through (by modern standards) very different societal lens. Attitudes to antiquity ranged from begrudging fascination and even respect in the early twentieth century to a more outright disdain for the classical past on behalf of 1940s and 50s writers for whom modern science-led ingenuity was the only real means of progress.

En route to (+)-varitriol 4, Xue-Wei Liu of Nanyang Technological University coupled (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 42) the glycosyl fluoride derived from 1 with the alkynyl fluoroborate salt 2 to give 3. James S. Panek of Boston University condensed (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 502) the enantiomerically pure allyl silane 6 with the aldehyde 5 to give the tetrahydrofuran 7. Further elaboration led to (+)-isatisine A 8, the only alkaloid so far isolated from the roots and leaves of the traditional Asian folk medicine Isatis indigotica. Arun K. Ghosh of Purdue University effected (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 66) oxidative ring expansion of the enantiomerically pure furan 9 to give, after reduction, the enone 10. This established the tetrahydropyran of (+)-herboxidiene 11, also known as GEXIA. William J. Chain of the University of Hawaii observed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2011, 133, 6553) unusual diastereoselectivity in the conjugate addition of the enone 12 to the enantiomerically pure aldehyde 13. Although eight diastereomers could have been formed, the reaction mixture was 2/3 the diastereomer 14. Reductive cyclization (SmI2) of 14 then led to (–)-englerin A 15. Martin J. Lear of the National University of Singapore cyclized (Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 5510) the enantiomerically pure lactol 16 to 17 with catalytic Bi(OTf)3. Dennis L. Wright of the University of Connecticut prepared (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 2263) 21 by dipolar cycloaddition of 20 to 19. Both 17 and 21 were carried on via intramolecular alkylation toward platensimycin 18.

Abstract The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been participating with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aerospace Industry Steering Committee (AISC) to develop a methodology for calculating the Probability of Detection (POD) for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) for damage detection on commercial aviation. Two POD methodologies were developed: one by Dr. William Meeker, Iowa State University, and the other by Dennis Roach, Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). With Dr. Seth Kessler, Metis Design Corp, a test program of 24 samples of aluminum strips to be fatigued on MTS machines was developed. The samples were designed to meet the ASTM E647. Twelve samples had two SHM modalities on the front and back from Metis (PZT and carbon nanotubes), and the other twelve had SHM sensors from Structural Monitoring Systems (SMS) (comparative vacuum monitoring – CVM) and Acellent Technologies (PZT). The tests were performed at the FAA William J Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City, NJ. The samples were cycled every 1500 cycles and then stopped for SHM data collection. Once the crack exceeded 0.125 inches and provided for a minimum of 15 inspections, a new sample was tested until all 12 samples were completed. The data was provided to each company to be set up in the format needed to run through the POD methodologies. Then the data was provided to Dr. Meeker and Dr. Roach for analysis. This paper will provide the results of those tests.

Railway rolling noise is nowadays a major source of acoustic pollution in urban areas, with nearly up to 12 million people daily affected in Europe by this phenomenon [1]. Hence, the search for ways of decreasing such noise radiation has become a highly active and significant research field. Following this approach, a Genetic Algorithms-based shape optimization of the railway wheel [2] is developed with the aim of minimizing rolling noise. Different approaches are considered to address the problem, such as directly minimizing radiated Sound poWer Level (SWL) or using the maximization of the natural frequencies if computational efficiency is especially critical. A parametric Finite Element model is implemented for the wheel based on the most relevant geometric parameters in rolling noise radiation. For the acoustic calculation, the sound radiation models used in the TWINS software [3] are adopted, which also accounts for the whole dynamics of the wheel/rail system. Furthermore, for every candidate wheel proposed, a structural analysis is computed in order to check design feasibility in accordance with the corresponding standard [4]. In all cases, new geometries for the wheel cross section are achieved that reduce the radiated rolling noise. Current defect assessment procedures assume all flaws to be sharp. While this assumption may be appropriate for fatigue cracks, in other cases such as voids, mechanical dents or welding defects it can be an over-conservative assumption that can lead to pessimistic assessment of structures and significant under-estimation of their safety margin against fracture. This study has developed an assessment procedure for predicting the cleavage fracture resistance of structures containing non-sharp defects. The new assessment method was developed using the Weibull stress based toughness scaling model and an approach based on a modification of the Failure Assessment Diagram (FAD). In the new assessment procedure, the notch driving force is described by the notch J-integral, the notch tip loading severity by the elastic notch tip opening stress σN, the notch geometry by a load-independent parameter βN, and the sensitivity of the material toughness to the notch effect by the material parameters γ and l. Finite element analysis of SE(B) specimens containing U-notches was used to demonstrate that the notch J-integral can be estimated using existing expressions in fracture toughness testing standards intended for pre-cracked specimens. A test programme of SE(B) specimens containing U-notches was used to validate the new assessment procedure. Failure predictions of the SE(B) specimens using the notch-modified FAD approach result in significantly reduced conservatism compared to the standard FAD assessment approach for sharp cracks.

Discussion L’étude poursuit l’inclusion de patients.

There is an ever-increasing demand for subsea transport of corrosive constituents which requires the use of corrosion resistant pipelines. This has generated interest in mechanically lined pipe (MLP) which consists of carbon steel pipe lined with a thin layer of corrosion resistant alloy (CRA), typically stainless steel. The CRA liner is adhered to the backing pipe by means of an interference fit. MLPs have been traditionally installed subsea using low strain methods such as towing, S-lay or J-lay. More recently, the efficient reel-lay method, typically used for pipelines up to 18” (457.2 mm) in diameter, has also been considered. To prevent damage to the MLP during high strain bending (i.e. wrinkling of CRA the liner) and thus allow reel-lay installation, TechnipFMC has qualified reeling of MLPs at ambient and elevated pressures. The ambient reeling approach, where the liner thickness is increased to prevent wrinkling during reeling, is appropriate for smaller diameter MLPs. For larger pipelines, it is generally more cost-effective to pressurise the MLP during reeling. Concerns have been expressed that liner imperfections such as small dents or wrinkles, introduced during manufacturing, installation or service, may compromise the integrity of the MLP subjected to high in-service cyclic loading. Therefore, this study was undertaken to examine the criticality of such flaws and determine the low cycle fatigue endurance of reeled MLPs with imperfections. First, a numerical study was undertaken to estimate in-service stress/strain ranges in the MLPs with liner flaws. Subsequently, small scale tests were carried out to quantify the fatigue performance of such MLPs. The obtained results confirmed that there is a negligible risk of failure of MLP flowlines due to crack initiation at liner imperfections and subsequent breach of the CRA layer, even for pipelines subjected to very severe inservice cyclic loading.

Pipelines are relied upon to transport hazardous liquids and gasses over long distances. A major threat to the integrity of pipelines is mechanical damage, caused by outside natural forces. According to the AGA report [1], 39% of offshore and 37.7% land based natural gas pipeline failures were caused by outside force. During the installation of offshore pipelines the pipe wall at the 6 o’clock position sees large compressive strain and local buckling may occur. Dents may also occur by impact onto hard objects such as the rollers on the stinger or rocks on the seabed and by anchor impact etc. These kinds of imperfections change the local geometry of the pipe, and therefore, a stress concentration and local bending stress will be induced. The stress concentration factor can be up to 10 depending on the geometry of the imperfection. As a result, the local stresses will be much higher than the design stresses for the pipeline in operation subject to internal pressure and axial strain, and fracture and fatigue capacity of the pipelines with these imperfections will decrease dramatically. Because of the large local deformation, the materials in the deformed pipe region have undergone large local plastic strains i.e. 10–20% plastic deformation. The material properties of the pipe with large plastic strain will be drastically changed, and therefore the fracture resistance of the pipe is expected to be decreased, especially when the damage is located at the seam or girth welds. To assess the criticality of such damage which often can be associated with strain induced flaws in the heavily deformed parent metal and welds, ‘fitness-for-service’ assessment is required. The objective is to determine the severity of the flaws in the deformed pipe and to make the repair/replacement decision. At present there are no definitive assessment guidelines that consider these aspects and how to incorporate the behaviour and fracture capacity of the heavily deformed material. In this paper, a numerical model of typical local imperfections i.e. buckles and wrinkles was established from the in-situ geometry measurements. The local stress distributions of the pipes were analyzed. Based on this stress analyses, the stress concentration around the local imperfections in operation were obtained and the fracture capacity and fatigue life of the pipeline was assessed. The tensile and J R-curve data for deformed pipeline materials were obtained by the DNV Energy laboratory to study the influences of the large plastic strain on the material properties, and the fracture resistance and fatigue crack growth of the pipe. Based on the numerical analysis and test results, a fracture combined fatigue assessment was performed to decide on the mitigation and remediation strategies for the pipeline.
