During the First World War, many soldiers in the Belgian Army were endowed with a decoration, in order to inspire, motivate, and reward desirable conduct. The relationship between decorations and the soldier’s self-consciousness, his behaviour and his emotions, is present in every aspect of decorating, as it emphasized his self-esteem, pride, and character. By analysing the material aspects of decorations, the ceremonies surrounding their bestowal, and the textual motivation for doing so, this article explores the functions and effects of decorating, the evaluation of behaviour and self-conscious emotions by both Army Command and soldiers.

With the rise in the cost of building materials all over the world, there is a need to resort to low-cost building materials or building materials that are not capital-intensive. One of such low-cost building material that suits the purpose of the study is bamboo. This paper attempted to present the use of bamboo in the building industry. The paper made use of the survey method in data gathering and discussion. It was found out that bamboos are formidable in building and interiors, as the innovation has been globally accepted to be quite reliable as a housing decoration tool, especially in developing countries of the world. The study recommended that bamboo should be harnessed as a cost-effective material besides being a preferred option that has gained wide acceptance for both indoor and outdoor decorations. Key Words: Cost-effective, Bamboo, indoor decoration, outdoor decorations, bamboo varieties, use of bamboo.

Abstract The existence of creation as narrated in the biblical stories has shown that there is advancement in humanity and in many other fields of endeavour. The creativity in art has advanced the economy, social-political and technological development of not only Europe centuries ago, but also in Africa. This advancement was much earlier realized and as a result of centers of creativity which were established to better the lives in their society. With the advancement of time, art decoration which has not been giving position because of arts aesthetical contents, began to generate success not only in the West where it originated from, but also in other continents of the world. The artist including the author and art aesthetics in Nigeria has not only been encouraged this upliftment, but, has gained enough ground to be appreciated. Decoratives are created by the artists; the use of forms embellished with colours has equally been appreciated in Nigeria and the societies of the world. The usefulness of decoration has been extended for both interior and exterior decorations for beautification and for other forms to solve other human endeavours.

Many real-world hand-crafted objects are decorated with elements that are packed onto the object’s surface and deformed to cover it as much as possible. Examples are artisanal ceramics and metal jewelry. Inspired by these objects, we present a method to enrich surfaces with packed volumetric decorations. Our algorithm works by first determining the locations in which to add the decorative elements and then removing the non-physical overlap between them while preserving the decoration volume. For the placement, we support several strategies depending on the desired overall motif. To remove the overlap, we use an approach based on implicit deformable models creating the qualitative effect of plastic warping while avoiding expensive and hard-to-control physical simulations. Our decorative elements can be used to enhance virtual surfaces, as well as 3D-printed pieces, by assembling the decorations onto real surfaces to obtain tangible reproductions.

The Iron Age of the Eurasian steppe is represented by the Scytho-Siberian culture, and it is a concept that encompasses areas where animal pattern decorations, weapons, and harnesses were commonly used. Among them, animal pattern decorations appear as different characteristics in the eastern and western regions of the culture. However, it can be seen that the meaning of production in both regions is different even with human figures. Since the late Paleolithic period, the tradition of burying human figures has been confirmed in the eastern and western regions of the Scito-Siberian culture, but each region has developed into different shapes and methods of use. In Altai, Siberia, the eastern region, it has been buried in tombs since the late Paleolithic period, and human figures were mainly made of bone material until the Bronze Age. It has developed into a maximized form in the Altai Pazirik culture, the eastern part of the Scytho-Siberian culture, and has implications for revival. On the other hand, in the western part of the Black Sea, it has been found in residential areas since the late Paleolithic period and is deeply related to living rituals. This trend is also found in ritual spaces in residential areas in the Cuckuten Tripoliye culture of the cruising era. Human figures buried in tombs in the Scyto-Siberian culture of the Iron Age are decorated with ritual items closely related to real life. This phenomenon, like animal pattern decoration, can be a characteristic that distinguishes the eastern and western regions of the Scythian-Siberian culture. Also, it can be seen that human figures represent continuity among the characteristics of Eurasia prehistoric culture.

Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica, inscribed in the World Heritage List, are unique examples of religious monuments which were created despite many unfavourable circumstances, and survived till today while preserving their original function, decorations and furnishings. The article discusses crucial principles of conservation work in both buildings, which has been carried out since the beginning of the 1990s. Positive results of conservation work, preserving the authenticity of substance, were possible mainly due to inscribing the building in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. Preserving the authenticity of those monuments was the priority during the realised conservation work on the interior decoration and furnishings. That is why the Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica maintained their authentic original décor from the turn of the 17th and 18th century.

Casas Grandes Medio–period (A.D. 1200–1450) human effigies are unique in the North American Southwest in that they depict primary and secondary sexual traits, making determination of sex and gender roles possible. Here, we build on previous discussions by considering the importance of depictions of clothing (e.g., belts and sashes), personal adornments (e.g., necklaces and bracelets), facial decorations, and other aspects of dress. We find that Medio-period symbolism for males and females was based on gender complementary that combined the productive, reproductive, and ritual activities of men and women within a single symbolic and ritual system. Some clothing styles are found on both males and females (e.g., arm bands), but there are also sex-based differences. Women wear low horizontal belts across their hips, whereas men primarily wear sandals and elaborate headbands. Aspects of dress also appear to be continued from previous cultures such as the Classic Mimbres (A.D. 1000–1150) and continued into historic northern Mexican and southwestern groups (e.g., headgear and some sandal types). Ultimately, we find that males have more elaborate dress and are associated with a specific set of ritually important symbols. Females are associated with cloud/fertility symbolism, sternal decorations, and birds.

After the former Jesuit Church, now the Garrison Church was opened in 2011, the need to explore and reinterpret its historical and cultural heritage arose. This was primarily caused by the process of church renovation which started in 2012. At the same time, the well-preserved interiors and exteriors of the church are of significant research interest. In particular, the art and religious culture of the society of the XVII-XIX century and not only in Lviv. It is known that until 1946 the church belonged to the Society of Jesus, a monastic order that operated all over the world. Under the influence of various cultures, a particular art culture of the order was slowly formed. It consisted of local plots and those that had a general meaning for the whole order with its own ideological load. Besides, the church as a place of worship/man’s encounter with God should have also had a biblical meaning. A combination of order and biblical themes in church decoration created a comprehensive image in which the order is the bearer of Christian ideas laid down in the Bible. This statement provides the opportunity to view decorations in the Garrison Church and in churches in general as a certain ideological construct that was supposed to “declare” specific “messages” incorporated in a fresco, a sculpture, and an icon, etc. Therefore, studying and interpreting church decorations makes it possible to understand, at least partially, the ideological motive of its author. Hence, it becomes easier to understand the art and religious culture of the society, particularly in the XVII-XIXcenturies. Considering the abovementioned, this article is an attempt to interpret the decorations of Saints Peter and Paul Garrison Church (the former Jesuit Church), a significant part of which consists of biblical and missionary plots.

Randle, Nadia Siobhan. "Triumphabant aeternae domus : motifs of arms in Roman domestic decoration". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2015. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/84622/.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
Despite the wealth of research on Roman interior decoration, little has been said about the use of motifs of arms and armour in domestic contexts. Previous scholarship has generally interpreted such images as representing Roman spoils of war. This study challenges this connection with spoils, looking at a wider range of influences on the development and deployment of motifs of arms. It explores how such motifs could have been interpreted in light of their wider decorative context. Drawing on an extensive catalogue of images in painting, mosaic and stucco dating from 100 BC to 100 AD, this thesis looks at the ways real captured arms were displayed in public and private contexts to assess how closely the domestic decorations mirror these idealised practices. It also explores the influence of Greek culture on Roman decorative motifs, decorative fashions across Mau’s Four Styles, the possible influence of gladiatorial combats on the depiction of arms and begins to assess the extent to which all of these factors may have been involved in interpreting motifs of arms in the Roman home. This allows a more nuanced approach to motifs of arms in decorations, emphasising their flexibility and ambiguity. This study also begins to explore how the location of motifs of arms within the house can impact on how a Roman observer could have interpreted the images, opening up a further avenue of research on motifs of arms and understanding how they were deployed and responded to in Roman domestic contexts.

Resumo:
This thesis examines the neglected architectural decoration from the late antique Mediterranean city (ca. 300-650 A.D.). It aims to address the omission in scholarly literature of any discussion about the decoration of non-monumental secular buildings, namely porticoes flanking streets, agorai, macella and ornamental plazas, small public baths, shops/workshops and ‘middle class’ houses. The decoration of non-monumental secular buildings has been overlooked at the expense of more lofty buildings and remains thus far one of the least known aspects of the late antique city. Considering that public porticoes and their associated structures (shops and workshops), along with small public baths and ‘middle class’ houses were crucial elements and accounted for the large part of any urban built environment starting from the Hellenistic period, the examination of their architectural decoration in this thesis represents the first attempt to redress this imbalance. Drawing upon an array of archaeological evidence, written sources, and depictions this thesis attempts to reconstruct how public porticoes, small public baths, shops/workshops, and ‘middle class’ houses might have looked on a daily basis. The geographical area entailed in this study presents more challenges than when focusing on a single site or province. Such a cross-regional approach of the topic allows to consider the decoration of public these structures as both as part of the history of individual cities and as part of Mediterranean-wide trends, guiding as such toward a more reliable visualisation of the late antique built environment. The picture conveyed in the Mediterranean cities is inevitably not the same. It is argued that as much as they shared similarities on the decoration of these structures, so did they also vary. The topic of this thesis is broad and definite answers cannot be given, nevertheless, it is hoped that a preliminary synthesis can be offered as a basis for future work.

This project report offers an in-depth, detailed account of my creative process and work during my two-year Master in visual communication at Konstfack, Stockholm. My degree project is a celebration of plurality and visual democracy. Starting with identifying different norms pervading the graphic design discipline in the Western world today, both in terms of aesthetic values and systems of thinking, I have worked to propose and visualize alternative possible futures.  Drawing has been my main carrier through an intense journey of un-learning and re-learning resulting in an artist’s book in unique copy.  With this book, I want to problematize the dominant discourses around objectivity as a utopian ideal with a suppressive agenda, while visualizing a world I can recognize myself in. I have used decoration as a method, emotion and femininity as explorative standpoints, giving space to the metaphorical, the ambiguous and the spiritual to challenge current visual norms.  This book emerges as an affirmation of my own quest for visual belonging  as a graphic designer and a woman; a testimony of the practice of drawing as actualized power.

Two objects formed the catalyst for this project and can be used to introduce the set of parallel and converging discourses that underline the text. A pair of cross-frame stools, still found in the entrance hall at Harewood today, generate a series of questions, regarding the collection itself and the Regency period, the history of the Lascelles family in the early nineteenth century and the dichotomy clearly present between the patterns of patronage of the previous generation and that of Edward Lascelles (d. 1814). Stylistically the stools look towards Egypt, engendering an investigation into the formation of this particular revival, centred on the figure of Dominique-Vivant Denon, whose text Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Egvpte introduced French society to the archaeological discoveries found in the conquered lands. A copy of this text is located in the Harewood collections, and it forms the foundation of a consideration of the political, semiological and social implications of the use of a particular decorative style. Questions are asked regarding the cultural implications of interior design. This leads us back to an examination of how and why the Egyptian revival was established in Britain. This has motivated a consideration of the discourses of furniture history and the methods by which we understand stylistic change, and particularly an analysis of the presentation of such collections today and the historiography of English furniture styles. Each aspect of the study coheres around the central theme of the Harewood collection. Material objects such as the cross-frame stool represent a number of social rituals and cultural practices. My aim is to use theoretical models to begin to unravel the meanings associated with such objects.

Located in the Phlegraean Fields (Campania, Italy), Baiae was renowned for its steam and thermo-mineral springs, making it a favourite resort for the Roman aristocracy. The ancient thermal station concentrated luxurious villae and baths built and remodelled between the end of the Republic and 3rd c. around a volcanic lake, now open to the sea. Although the site suffered the effects of bradyseism and was partly buried by the Monte Nuovo’s eruption in 1538, the remains were still visited during the Grand Tour. Excavated in the 1930-1940s, the monumental complexes constitute the 40 hectares of the current archaeological park and preserve in situ architectural facings (wall-paintings, stuccos, mosaics, opera sectilia, sculptures, and various furniture). This study aims to document, analyse and put into their architectural context these mostly unpublished decorations: most of them are difficult to read, and their interpretation has required the use of computer graphics methods, resulting in graphic reconstructions. Chronological phases have been determined thanks to the decoration’s analysis. The architectural re-contextualisation, supported by recent plans, also led to the identification of the various spaces and to a socio-economic interpretation of the site

The introductory part analyzes personnel cast of the division and aims at finding the answer to the question, in which period the largest number of the Austrians served in the division and possibly how many. The main focus is put on the question, whether the Austrians in the division who owned the highest army decorations of the Third Reich were represented by below-average or above-average numbers in view of their total number. We can not omit to mention a social profile of these decorated men, which provides us with broader point of view of their personalities. Last but not least, the thesis deals with the question, whether the Austrians took part in war crimes committed by the division. This chapter looks at Moorcroft’s training as a potter at the firm of E.J.D. Bodley where his father had worked as Artistic Director, and his education both at the innovative Burslem School of Art and at the National Art Training School (soon to be renamed the Royal College of Art). His appointment as a designer at James Macintyre & Co., Ltd. put him in a firm at the very centre of enlightened art education in the Potteries, its Directors including the forward-looking M.P. Wm Woodall (who had served on the Royal Commission on Technical Instruction), the philanthropist Th. Hulme, and the gifted ceramic chemist, H. Watkin. It was a firm developing its production of electrical porcelain, but keen also to invest in the manufacture of high-quality art pottery. The firm’s Minutes reveal the great benefit it soon derived from Moorcroft’s appointment. After just four years, Moorcroft had acquired an international reputation as a ceramic artist, and his Florian ware was stocked by exclusive retailers the world over, bringing widespread commercial success. It was the ideal collaboration of manufacturer and designer, of commerce and art, very much in the spirit of the Arts and Crafts. The chapter also considers Moorcroft’s distinctive integration of ornament and form, a quality often singled out in early reviews and quite different from the ‘applied’ decoration of much contemporary pottery. No less distinctive was his technique of slip decoration, his unusually rich colours achieved by staining the unfired clay with metallic oxides, and his unique practice of signing every pot by hand.

The Cistercian monastery of Sedlec was founded in the twelfth century and its importance soon increased together with the expansion of silver mining in the nearby town of Kutná Hora. According to a later legendary narrative, soil brought from the Holy Land was scattered across the monastic cemetery, which made this place an attractive destination for the burial of countless corpses in the course of the following centuries. The enormous amount of human remains in individual as well as mass graves led to the establishment of the Ossuary, which was rearranged several times, most recently in the second half of the nineteenth century. A variety of folk tales tell of the miraculous deeds of the bones and their special powers. Being conveniently located in the buffer zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kutná Hora, today crowds of tourists appreciate the macabre use of human skeletal elements in its decoration. A large-scale rescue excavation conducted recently around the Ossuary revealed an important archaeological archive that complements historical records.

This chapter presents a draft of a long-standing interdisciplinary project involving photogrammetry and archaeology, in which both sides tried to eliminate the gap between their disciplines. This is the Applikensigillata project which aimed to determine appliqué decorations in Italian terra sigillata. The cooperation of the different disciplines resulted in a substantial extension of the timetable. Although the project was relatively time consuming, it nevertheless provided results that were instrumental to archaeology. The project Italian terra sigillata of Noricum produced archaeological results. It produced correct drawings of the appliqué decorations through photogrammetry; it yielded a general catalogue; it opened a new field of results reflecting quality in both shapes and decorations; it debunked the old-myth of the carter-like organisation of Roman; and it eliminated surviving old catalogues based on the observation of a single piece.

Abstract It is January, 1859. Imagine being a visitor, seated on a sofa in Darwin’s large and dark study at Down House in Kent. The Christmas decorations have been put away. The smell of leather- covered books, gas lamps and moth balls rises up from the walls of this well-used room. Over the past few months, our world-weary naturalist has been drawing together the last remaining thoughts for his new work, to be called ‘On the Origin of Species’. Its contents have been gathered from notes and observations made since 1831, an epic of nearly thirty years’ gestation.

Abstract Many ornithologists would agree with the late Professor A.J. Marshall in nominating bowerbirds as the most interesting of all of the 144 bird families presently acknowledged with respect to the complexity of their behaviour and associated phenomena (Marshall 1951c; Sibley and Ahlquist 1990). The twenty species of passerine (or perching) birds that constitute the bowerbird family Ptilonorhynchidae are confined to the great island of New Guinea and the island continent of Australia, and their immediately adjacent islands, of the region known as Australasia (Fig. 1.1). Uniquely within the avian world, male bowerbirds skilfully build structures of sticks, grasses or other plant stems on or close to the ground and artistically decorate these ‘bowers’ with colourful fruits, flowers, feathers, bones, stones, shells, insect skeletons, and numerous other natural (and human-made) objects. Such decorations may exceed several thousand on a single bower, and males constantly steal them from one another. Where possible, males also attempt to destroy or damage the bower structures of their rivals. Males of some species manufacture and apply paint to their bowers, even holding a wad of vegetable matter in the bill tip to use as a tool to assist in applying their paint. The highly sophisticated building, decorating, collecting, arranging, thieving, singing, and courtship posturing and dancing by males is primarily to attract and impress females to the point of stimulating them to solicit and permit mating.

Abstract The cantata Preise dein Glücke, gesegnetes Sachsen BWV 215 was composed in 1734 for the first anniversary of the election of August III as King of Poland. The piece was performed in Leipzig during a festive celebration. The center of the celebration was a procession through the lavishly decorated city, an event that culminated in the performance of Bach’s work. We are well informed about the decorations in Leipzig through a book published shortly after the festivities. The detailed descriptions of the banners, images, and illuminations that adorned the houses of the city resonate with some of the images used in the text of BWV 215 and also shed new light on other secular cantatas that operate with a similar visual vocabulary. It becomes clear that Bach’s cantata is only one facet in a complex network of multimodal communication.

Abstract IF we include the Croix de Guerre of the First and Second World Wars, the official number of French men and women who have been awarded decorations and are ‘ presumed alive’ is estimated at over 2 million. How is this honours table made up? The Legion d’ honneur has more than 200,000 honorands, the Compagnons de la Liberation just under 1,000 members, including five towns and 18 regiments. There are over 560,000 holders of the rnedaille rnilitaire and 130,000 of the Ordre du Merite, to say nothing of the swelling battalions of the Merite Agricole, the Croix de Guerre, or the Palmes academiques. Just one look at these figures is enough to confer upon these modest emblems the status of a systematic instrument of governance.

All around the world and throughout known history, human beings have come together to dance, sing, chant, give thanks, mark changes in life, or celebrate communal achievements. These activities always entail the performance of closely stipulated actions, often using unusual artefacts or displaying distinctive hairstyles, clothing, or body decorations. Each cultural group acts as a vast repository of unique rules for how to do these things. In this introductory chapter, the aim is to capture some the diversity of cultural rituals, survey various efforts to explain that diversity, and introduce the theory of modes of religiosity around which the book as a whole is constructed.

The themes of conservation and dissemination of heritage, both tangible and intangible, are actually central in the scientific debate. Modern technologies play a crucial role in the transition into the “digital age” and it is essential to make the best use of their potential. This chapter describes a pipeline, made precisely thanks to well-established previous experiences, which is applied to the case study of the noble palaces of Pontremoli and their decorations in “quadrature.” It is illustrated how starting from the data of digital survey it is possible to construct and realize a virtual world in the form of a “videogame,” which is useful as a tool for easier disclosure of cultural heritage.

The mosaic made of hydraulic tiles, is an architectural coating with a significant decorative importance, characteristic of both modernist and Art Deco architectures. This technique appeared in France in the decade of the 1860s, spreading all over Europe with great rapidity, and with a remarkable impact until the beginning of World War II. The decoration with hydraulic mosaic is based on the use of tiles made of compressed cement, adorned with intense colours and a glossy appearance. After been used for more than a century, many of these decorations are in need of an immediate intervention. As they are serialized and mass-produced elements, their volumetric and chromatic reintegration becomes easier. Non-interventional procedures are not usually acceptable, as they often have pavement function. In this work, four different restoration techniques have been compared. Starting from inorganic binders, we have proposed 1) white cement / silicate mineral paint; 2) acrylic resin / paint and 3) epoxy resin / paint. Last, reintegration tests were made on marble stucco using a combination of plaster, pigments and animal glue. The results of these four systems were compared with the ones obtained from the traditional hydraulic mosaic, paying special attention to gloss, hardness, and porosity. As the goal is to choose the most appropriate technique applied to Cultural Heritage, its behaviour was tested through two accelerated aging tests. On one hand, a group of test samples have been exposed to the penetration of salts by capillarity, very common in pavements. On the other hand, the samples were placed in a climatic chamber with the aim of accelerating its aging, exposing them to humidity, heat and UV radiation. These tests have made possible to know the potential of each of these materials and their suitability for volumetric and chromatic reintegration.

The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  Building blocks: The ultimate aim should be to build rich, detailed and testable narratives situated within a European context, and addressing phenomena from the longue durée to the short-term over international to local scales. Chronological control is essential to this and effective dating strategies are required to enable generation-level analysis. The ‘serendipity factor’ of archaeological work must be enhanced by recognising and getting the most out of information-rich sites as they appear. o There is a pressing need to revisit the archives of excavated sites to extract more information from existing resources, notably through dating programmes targeted at regional sequences – the Western Isles Atlantic roundhouse sequence is an obvious target. o Many areas still lack anything beyond the baldest of settlement sequences, with little understanding of the relations between key site types. There is a need to get at least basic sequences from many more areas, either from sustained regional programmes or targeted sampling exercises. o Much of the methodologically innovative work and new insights have come from long-running research excavations. Such large-scale research projects are an important element in developing new approaches to the Iron Age.  Daily life and practice: There remains great potential to improve the understanding of people’s lives in the Iron Age through fresh approaches to, and integration of, existing and newly-excavated data. o House use. Rigorous analysis and innovative approaches, including experimental archaeology, should be employed to get the most out of the understanding of daily life through the strengths of the Scottish record, such as deposits within buildings, organic preservation and waterlogging. o Material culture. Artefact studies have the potential to be far more integral to understandings of Iron Age societies, both from the rich assemblages of the Atlantic area and less-rich lowland finds. Key areas of concern are basic studies of material groups (including the function of everyday items such as stone and bone tools, and the nature of craft processes – iron, copper alloy, bone/antler and shale offer particularly good evidence). Other key topics are: the role of ‘art’ and other forms of decoration and comparative approaches to assemblages to obtain synthetic views of the uses of material culture. o Field to feast. Subsistence practices are a core area of research essential to understanding past society, but different strands of evidence need to be more fully integrated, with a ‘field to feast’ approach, from production to consumption. The working of agricultural systems is poorly understood, from agricultural processes to cooking practices and cuisine: integrated work between different specialisms would assist greatly. There is a need for conceptual as well as practical perspectives – e.g. how were wild resources conceived? o Ritual practice. There has been valuable work in identifying depositional practices, such as deposition of animals or querns, which are thought to relate to house-based ritual practices, but there is great potential for further pattern-spotting, synthesis and interpretation. Iron Age Scotland: ScARF Panel Report v  Landscapes and regions:  Concepts of ‘region’ or ‘province’, and how they changed over time, need to be critically explored, because they are contentious, poorly defined and highly variable. What did Iron Age people see as their geographical horizons, and how did this change?  Attempts to understand the Iron Age landscape require improved, integrated survey methodologies, as existing approaches are inevitably partial.  Aspects of the landscape’s physical form and cover should be investigated more fully, in terms of vegetation (known only in outline over most of the country) and sea level change in key areas such as the firths of Moray and Forth.  Landscapes beyond settlement merit further work, e.g. the use of the landscape for deposition of objects or people, and what this tells us of contemporary perceptions and beliefs.  Concepts of inherited landscapes (how Iron Age communities saw and used this longlived land) and socal resilience to issues such as climate change should be explored more fully.  Reconstructing Iron Age societies. The changing structure of society over space and time in this period remains poorly understood. Researchers should interrogate the data for better and more explicitly-expressed understandings of social structures and relations between people.  The wider context: Researchers need to engage with the big questions of change on a European level (and beyond). Relationships with neighbouring areas (e.g. England, Ireland) and analogies from other areas (e.g. Scandinavia and the Low Countries) can help inform Scottish studies. Key big topics are: o The nature and effect of the introduction of iron. o The social processes lying behind evidence for movement and contact. o Parallels and differences in social processes and developments. o The changing nature of houses and households over this period, including the role of ‘substantial houses’, from crannogs to brochs, the development and role of complex architecture, and the shift away from roundhouses. o The chronology, nature and meaning of hillforts and other enclosed settlements. o Relationships with the Roman world
