Texto completo da fonteThis study proposes a twenty-first-century reading of Robinson Crusoe, by British writer Daniel Defoe, aiming to identify the reasons why the story of the castaway who lives on an uninhabited island for 28 years has remained remarkably popular in the Western world for almost three centuries. The reading is a drill on Complex Thinking, as defined by French epistemologist Edgar Morin, one of the pillars of Transdisciplinarity. This approach consists of the identification of patterns and interrelationships among elements inside the text and elements external to it, in the light of a number of disciplines involved in the study. Complex Thinking connects empirical/logical/rational knowledge to symbolic/mythological/magical wisdom. The study starts with a review of the career of the book, considering the founding texts which might have influenced the creation of Robinson Crusoe, and the myriad of mimetic texts that followed its publication, giving birth to a literary subgenre, the Robinsonade. A glance at the life of Defoe is also offered, so as to illustrate the context of a European world of radical scientific, political and social changes. Contexts and the critical heritage of the work are put together with symbolic data that prove relevant for the research on the imaginary inscribed in the novel. Chapter three acknowledges the aid of a number of studies in the fields of philosophy of science, analytical psychology, mythology, anthropology and religion, which enabled me to interrelate diverse levels of reading. Chapter four offers my transdisciplinary reading of Robinson Crusoe, in which I endeavor to demonstrate that the continued popularity of the novel derives from its capacity to convey concealed meanings connected with elements constitutive of the Imaginary of the Western world.

This dissertation investigates Irish history and literature in order to analyse the way the Troubles are portrayed in modern Irish novel. The main focus of analysis are the novels Fat Lad, by Glenn Patterson, an author belonging to the new generation of Northern Irish writers and Reading in the Dark, the first novel by Seamus Deane, a Northern Irish poet and distinguished literary critic. Firstly, the work presents a general perspective on Irish history, since the beginning of the English presence on Irish soil until modern times, in order to identify historical and social reasons for the Troubles. Then, it presents a general perspective on the beginning and development of the novel as a genre, which develops as an expression of the rising middle class. It also refers to the main characteristics of the Irish novel, namely the influence it shows of oral tradition and the presence of a strong narrator. Finally, it presents, briefly, the way the Troubles have been portrayed in the novel, firstly, in a very stereotyped way and, more recently, in a more creative and innovative form. The novels studied (each reflects the Protestant or Catholic perspective) identify a concern on memory and language in the articulation of identity. Irish history is revisited in an attempt to reflect on the past and overcome traumatic experiences, in a vision of reconciliation and forgiveness. The three elements, past, present and future relate each other in a way that is natural and inescapable. By doing that, they establish the meaning of memory and facilitate the articulation of Irish identity.
Bogdan, Irina Alexandrovna. "A fear of dark water : das profundezas à tradução". Master's thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/25655.
Texto completo da fonteThis project aims to investigate the translation of crime fiction, a genre that seems to be less explored in the academic world. It is intended to propose a translation of part of the book Fear of Dark Water, written by Craig Russell and published on March 1st, 2012, by Arrow Books. This work aims to obtain a master degree in Translation by Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa and was produced during the third, fourth, fifth and sixth semesters of 2011-2014. The translation of the mentioned work was in itself a challenge in part by the author’s style which, in spite of, apparently, being simple and colloquial, offers resistance at the level of the sentence structure in the target language, which tends to be more extensive than the structure of the source language and by recurring to bilingualism marks, that could present some difficulty for both the translation and both target and source language reader. The translation, that serves as the basis for this project, envisages the possibility of a commercial publication for a target readership fond of the thriller/romance noir and/our interested in contemporary English literature. The choice of only part of the book A Fear of Dark Water relies in the extension required for this project, translating of chapters 2, 5, 21 and 34. Regarding the report, it starts with a brief genre investigation, including its definition, as well as the definition of its subgenera. It also soughts to explore the issue of bilingualism throughout the source text, being a subject that is also familiar to me. This, on the other hand, is one of more discussed matters in Translation Studies. And in the center of everything is the report that provides the analysis of the source text, as well as the deliberation on the main problems elapsed throughout the translation. 8 The translated version, as well as the source text, is appended to the report. Finally, I would like to mention my hope that this report can demonstrate the commitment necessary for translation task, as well as for research in the area of crime fiction and the whole literary translations studies area.
