Vietnam with its limestone ranges that are concentrated mainly in northern, north-central and southern parts, and many different limestone islands running along the coastline, has a phylogenetically-diverse land snails fauna dominated by endemic species. The genus Cyclophorus (Cyclophoridae) in Vietnam is studied. Sixty species and subspecies from various habitats of limestone areas throughout Vietnam are confirmed and recorded. New species and subspecies, Cyclophorus implicatus kanhoensis ssp. nov., from Northwestern Vietnam, and Cyclophorus tamdaoensis sp. nov., from Northern Vietnam are described and discussed. In this paper, the Cyclophorus courbeti var. leucostoma Dautzenberg et Fischer, 1905, is elevated to subspecies.

Resumo:
Cyclophoridae is the dominant family of operculated terrestrial snails in East Asia. The group consists of four subfamilies and approximately 300 species that are currently classified into 34 genera. The species occupy various habitatsand show a high morphological diversity. The molecular phylogenetic relationships of this group have not previously been discussed. In order to uncover the relationships within the family, we sequenced parts of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and of the 16S rRNA gene from 32 species of 10 genera of cyclophorid and established the phylogenetic tree using neighbor joining, Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses to construct phylogenetic trees. The results based on mtDNA sequences suggest that the genera Cyclophorus, Cyclotus, Leptopoma, and Cyathopoma are monophyletic while the traditional genus Japonia appeared polyphyletic and then J. zebra should be moved to the new genus Pilosphaera. In addition, Pilosphaera yentoensis n. sp. and Japonia boonkioensis n. sp. are described in this paper.

Through the present manuscript, we are reporting for the first time the presence of Cyclophorus pfeifferi Reeve, 1861 in India. Previously, this species of land snail was reported only from South-East Asian countries Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The specimens were collected during field sur- veys in Dampa Tiger Reserve in Mizoram state, India. The presence of C. pfeifferi in India reveals the range expansion and long-distance dispersal abilities of the species. Here we discuss the taxonomy, ecology and possible routes of dispersal of the species in India.

Assam is located in the Indo-Burma global biodiversity hotspot, and contains many animals and plants that have not been investigated scientifically. Increasing urbanization and destruction of forest cover have created threats to the survival of many species, hence scientific investigation is important to support conservation efforts. I undertook this study to evaluate the status of land snails in Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, a fast-growing city 216 km2 in area where shrinkage of natural forest cover has become a matter of great concern. A total of 12 species were recorded: Cyclophorus pearsoni (Benson, 1851), C. zebrinus (Benson, 1836), Pterocyclus parvus (Pearson, 1833), Endothyrella affinis (Gude, 1897), Cryptaustenia silcharensis (Godwin-Austen, 1907), Macrochlamys atricolor (Godwin-Austen, 1875), M. hengdanensis Godwin-Austen, 1899, Sitala rimicola (Benson, 1859), Bradybaena cestus (Benson, 1836), Lissachatina fulica (Bowdich, 1822), Allopeas gracile (Hutton, 1834), and Rishetia hastula (Benson, 1860). I have provided a detailed discussion of our findings.

In this work we analyzed the spatial and seasonal variation of length distribution, sexual proportion and mature dominance for Atlantoraja cyclophora and A. castelnaui, at the Uruguayan continental shelf. There were significant differences in total length (TL) composition between sexes, being females bigger than males for both species. Atlantoraja cyclophora showed a relatively uniform length distribution between inner and outer shelf. There were no major variations in the sex compositions and in the mature dominance between seasons, suggesting no temporal variation. Atlantoraja castelnaui showed a significant variation in its spatial and seasonal distribution. Individuals were smaller in inner shelf, pointing out the existence of juvenile zone in areas up to 50 m depth. A tendency to capture smaller individuals towards the end of the year was observed. In all seasons over 50% of females were caught below the estimated size at maturity, suggesting that this species is highly susceptible to exploitation.

Cocconeis Ehrenberg species (Bacillariophyceae) are documented from benthic samples collected along the Seogwipo coast of Jeju Island, the southernmost region of Korea. The 25 taxa were identified from seaweeds, sand, and sediments, their morphological features are described, and the distributions of the taxa are summarized. Three groups of Cocconeis e.g., Cocconeis dirupta var. flexella, C. pseudomarginata var. intermedia, Cocconeis scutellum, and their similar taxa were dominant in this area. Many other Cocconeis that grows mainly along the coasts of warmer oceans were also identified. The floristic study reveals the existence of rare or retrieved species that were not well known until recently, and expands some of their geographical distributions; Cocconeis cf. callosa, C. conspicua, C. cyclophora var. decora, C. cyclophora var. meisteri, C. delicata, C. schmidtii, C. shikinensis, C. suzukii, C. voigtii. In this floristic study, 14 Cocconeis taxa are new records in South Korea.

In this study, 3399 specimens belonging to 188 species of the Geometridae (Lepidoptera) family were examined. Species composition and abundance rates of Geometridae communities were analyzed with respect to the plant formations of the region as deciduous forests, dry coniferous-oak forests, humid coniferous forests, pseudomaquis and farmlands. The results also indicates that 26 species in deciduous forests, 23 species in coniferous-oak forests, 20 species in humid coniferous forests, 20 in pseudomaquis and 20 species in farmlands have high abundance rate. The highest rates of abundance in deciduous forests and dry coniferous-oak forests belong to Cyclophora linearia (Hübner, [1799]) with 14,7% and Peribatodes rhomboidaria ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) 13,1%, respectively. Also, the highest rates of abundance in humid coniferous forests and pseudomaquis belong to Scotopteryx moeniata (Scopoli, 1763) with 23,46% and Cyclophora puppillaria (Hübner, [1799]) with 19,83%. Species richness is much higher in deciduous forests than it is in other habitats. Faunal similarities between the Geometridae communities are reported below 50% among all habitats. The highest faunal similarity was found to be between dry coniferous-oak forests followed by the second highest similarity between pseudomaquis and deciduous forests.

This study reports on newly recorded and several rare marine benthic diatoms from the Turkish coasts of the Aegean Sea. Altogether 510 species were observed from 6 locations throughout the Aegean Sea, and taxonomic and biogeographic remarks concerning thirty-four new recorded species are presented. Amongst the represented taxa, Amicula, Auricula, Cyclophora, Minidiscus, Oestrupia and Ralfsiella were observed for the first time in Turkish coastal waters. Biddulphia seychellensis, Cyclophora tabellariformis, Grammatophora maxima, G. gibberula, Amphicocconeis mascarenica, Cocconeis maxima, Amicula specululum, Caloneis egena, Diploneis dalmatica, D. droopii, Mastogloia affinis, M. linearis, M. mauritana and Oestrupia powelii var. vidovichii, which were rarely recorded from the coasts of the oceans and the Mediterranean Sea, were examined by light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, the findings revealed that the geographic range of A. mascarenica, B. seychellensis, C. tabellariformis and Psammodictyon corpulentum, which were distributed in warmer marine waters, has expanded to the temperate waters of the Aegean Sea. Additionally, the recently described species Hyalosira septata, from the loggerhead sea turtle carapace and the Turkish Mediterranean Sea coast was observed in the Aegean Sea. This study contributes to the diatom knowledge of marine waters from the understudied Aegean Sea coasts of Türkiye, enhancing the biogeography of some rare and well-established taxa.

Abstract A total of 459 (245 females, 214 males) Atlantoraja cyclophora was captured by bottom trawl off the coast of Rio Grande do Sul between 30°40′S and 34°30′S during surveys conducted in winter 2001 and summer/autumn 2002 at depths of 100–300 m. Total length at maturity was 52.8 cm for females and 48.5 cm for males. Symmetry and functional parity of the gonads were observed in both sexes, but there was no significant temporal variation in either sex for any of the reproductive parameters studied. Ovulation and egg-deposition were similarly intensive in both seasons. In adult females, there was an ovarian resting period at an individual level, though it was not synchronized at a population level. Distribution of egg-bearing females was not related to depth or species' range.

The effects of a single intramuscular injection of 2 mg atropine sulphate on visual function were studied in volunteer subjects. The well-known effects of increased heart rate, dryness of the mouth, ncreased pupil diameter and reduced accommodative range were confirmed. Visual acuity, stereoacuity, red-green colour balance and reaction time to a visual stimulus were unaffected by atropine, while extraocular muscle balance (horizontal heterophoria and cyclophoria) underwent a transient change. There was no significant change in contrast sensitivity measurements to stationary sinusoidal grating patterns of spatial frequencies 1-30 c/deg; however contrast sensitivity o moving grating patterns of spatial frequencies 1-5 c/deg showed a sustained reduction which was ,till present at 6 h post-injection. It is concluded that atropine adversely affects movement letection but not stationary visual function.

Introduction. ?Grey zone Lymphoma?? is associated with various entities. The last published classification of lymphoproliferative neoplasms includes mediastinal grey zone lymphoma. Precise diagnostic criteria are insufficient and establishing a diagnosis is as complex as deciding on treatment options. In this article pathologist and hematologist discuss issues on this topic through case presentation and literature review. Clinical characteristics. It presents in the younger population usually with a mediastinal mass, sometimes large, with compressive symptoms. Pathologic characteristics. Some cases can?t be classified neither as Hodgkin nor Primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma. Morphology resembles Hodgkin, but with a positive immunophenotype for primary mediastinal or diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and vice versa. Case report. We presented a case of a 33-year-old male with cervical lymphadenomegaly, B symptoms and clinical deterioration during the diagnostic period. After the first biopsy, differential diagnosis was Epstein-Barr virus-associated lymphoproliferative disorder or classical Hodgkin lymphoma. The second biopsy confirms Epstein-Barr virus-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The World Health Organization Classification of lymphoproliferative neoplasms - clinical perspective. The term ?grey zone lymphoma? is associated with overlapping diagnosis or uncertainty in diagnosis in more clinical settings than the ones provided in the 5th World Health Organization Classification. Discussion. For now, chemotherapeutic regimen (rituximab-cyclophos phamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone) stays the standard first line therapy for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma regardless of the Epstein- Barr virus status. Mediastinal grey zone lymphoma treatment varies: chemotherapeutic regimen (rituximab-cyclophos phamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone) was linked with better outcomes than chemotherapeutic regimen (adriablastin, bleomycin, vinblastine, dacarbazine) +/-R, but for some patients chemotherapeutic regimen (dose adjusted-etoposide, prednisone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin) might be beneficial. Conclusion. Grey zone lymphoma is a rare hematologic malignancy that needs extensive sampling for correct diagnosis and is still subject to inter-observer variability.

O. fagata (Scharp.) has an economic importance for birch stands and newly established beech stands. Thanks to the uneven time of hatching moths of an eudominant species C. pusaria (L.) the danger of defoliation of birch stands in summer is reduced in spite of the species gradation potential.

A total of 459 individuals of Atlantoraja cyclophora were captured along the Rio Grande do Sul coast between latitudes 30º40'S and 34º30'S. Two surveys were performed, in the winter 2001 and in the summer/autumn 2002, using bottom-trawl between the depths of 100 and 600 m. This species occurred between 100 and 300 m deep, without significant differences in the frequency of occurrence and abundance (CPUE; kg/hour) between latitudes, depth and seasons. The sex ratio was not significantly different from 1:1 in all depths. In the study area, temperature ranged between 10.0 ºC and 17.6 ºC and salinity between 35.2 e 36.0 ppm. There was no correlation between CPUE and depth, temperature and salinity. Mean total length of females (53.2 cm) was significantly larger than males (50.9 cm). No differences were detected in mean total length between seasons, but mean total length was significantly larger in depths of 100 m and 200 m. The distribution of the frequencies of total length was asymmetric, indicating rareness or lack of juveniles in the samples.

Fish represent the group of vertebrates with the largest number of species and the largest geographic distribution; they are also used in different ways by modern civilizations. The goal of this study was to compile the current knowledge on the use of ichthyofauna in zootherapeutic practices in Brazil, including ecological and conservational commentary on the species recorded. We recorded a total of 85 species (44 fresh-water species and 41 salt-water species) used for medicinal purposes in Brazil. The three most commonly cited species wereHoplias malabaricus, Hippocampus reidi, andElectrophorus electricus. In terms of conservation status, 65% of species are in the “not evaluated” category, and 14% are in the “insufficient data” category. Three species are in the “vulnerable” category:Atlantoraja cyclophora,Balistes vetula, andHippocampus erectus. Currently, we cannot avoid considering human pressure on the population dynamics of these species, which is an essential variable for the conservation of the species and the ecosystems in which they live and for the perpetuation of traditional medical practices.

In this paper, the authors report morphological abnormalities observed in six species of skates and rays from off southeastern Brazil, between 2005 and 2008 as follows: the rio skate, Rioraja agassizi (Müller and Henle, 1841); the spotback skate, Atlantoraja castelnaui (Ribeiro, 1907); the eyespot skate, A. cyclophora (Regan, 1903); the pelagic stingray, Pteroplatytrygon violacea (Bonaparte, 1832); the roughtail stingray, Dasyatis hypostigma (Santos and Carvalho, 2004); and the shortnose guitarfish, Zapteryx brevirostris (Müller and Henle, 1841). The abnormalities observed included pectoral fins non-adherent to the head; incomplete pectoral fin, anophthalmia, and presence of a single clasper. The percentage of abnormal specimens ranged from 0.1 to 1.3. Potential causes of the abnormalities probably occurred during embryonic development, for instance pectoral fins had failed to fuse together in front of the head in early development. Additionally, unfavorable environmental conditions cannot be excluded, such as the role of chemical pollutants playing a role in embryonic development of skates in egg cases.

A new nematode genus and species associated with terrestrial gastropods from Vietnam is described and illustrated. Partial SSU and ITS rDNA sequences were obtained and subjected to phylogenetic analysis. Both morphologically and molecularly, Neoalloionema tricaudatum gen. n., sp. n. is closest to Alloionema appendiculatum, another gastropod associate. It is differentiated from A. appendiculatum by the presence of an outstretched vs reflexed testis and the absence of denticles in the stoma, by the parasitic juveniles inhabiting the pallial cavity vs the foot of the host and having six vs two lips and large sucker-like phasmids vs pore-like. The most peculiar feature of N. tricaudatum gen. n., sp. n. is the presence of paired, solid appendages located at the mid-tail region of juveniles from the pallial cavity of the host. The nature of the association between N. tricaudatum gen. n., sp. n. and its gastropod host is discussed.

Ferussina Grateloup, 1827 is a European Paleogene land snail genus, which is currently classified in its own family, the Ferussinidae Wenz, 1923 (1915), in the superfamily Cyclophoroidea. The shell of this genus is remarkable by its last quarter whorl turning towards the apex instead of away from it, which is an unusual trait in terrestrial snails. We show, however, that this trait has evolved at least nine times in terrestrial Eupulmonata and Caenogastropoda, and it does not justify distinction at the family level in any of the reported cases. This observation suggests the systematic position of Ferussina should not be based on the apexward-turning last quarter whorl alone but instead on the general morphology of the shell. As a result, we re-evaluate the systematic position of the Ferussinidae and treat it as a subfamily of the Cyclophoridae.

Ten percent of newly diagnosed myeloma patients treated with any type of chemotherapy develop deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Thalidomide has proven activity in refractory multiple myeloma (MM), and although single-agent thalidomide has minimal prothrombogenic activity, its combination with cytotoxic chemotherapy is associated with a significantly increased risk of DVT. We analyzed the incidence of DVT in 232 MM patients who received a combination of chemotherapy and thalidomide on 2 protocols that differed only by the inclusion of doxorubicin in one. DT-PACE (dexamethasone/thalidomide/cisplatin/doxorubicin/cyclophos- phanide/etoposide) was offered to patients with preceding standard dose therapy, but no prior autotransplantation, while DCEP-T (dexamethasone/cyclophosphamide/etoposide/cisplatin/thalidomide) was administered for relapse after transplantation. If there were signs or symptoms suggestive of DVT, patients received additional investigations, including Doppler ultrasonography, followed by venography if indicated. Only patients on DT-PACE but not DCEP-T experienced an increased incidence of DVT. A statistical association between the incidence of DVT and combination chemotherapy including doxorubicin (P = .02) was observed; this association was confirmed on multivariate analysis. MM patients treated with thalidomide and doxorubicin have a high risk of developing DVT.
