This paper reports on a study about the rhetoric, metacognitive, and cognitive strategies pre-service teachers use before and after a process-based writing intervention when completing an argumentative essay. The data were collected through two think-aloud protocols while 21 Chilean English as a foreign language pre-service teachers completed an essay task. The findings show that strategies such as summarizing, reaffirming, and selecting ideas were only evidenced during the post intervention essay, without the use of communication and socio-affective strategies in either of the two essays. All in all, a process-based writing intervention does not only influence the number of times a strategy is used, but also the number of students who employs strategies when writing an essay—two key considerations for the devising of any writing program.

Undergraduate nursing students often find essay writing challenging, and feel underprepared, yet the impact of using online feedback to support essay writing has been underexplored. First-year nursing students from a regional university were involved in a project that encouraged them to access an online tutoring service, as part of their development of an essay task. Significant differences were found in students’ final essay marks for those who accessed the online writing support. Students who accessed online writing support were also more likely to be deep, rather than surface learners. The findings indicate that the provision of prompt or ‘just in time’ feedback, using an online feedback mechanism, can greatly enhance students’ essay writing performance.

English as Foreign Language (EFL) pre-service teachers arguably face more challenges regarding rhetorical moves in argumentative essays, and one of them is intertextuality because EFL pre-service teachers' arguments require sufficient and high-quality support and evidence from other scholars. Intertextuality was mainly studied, grounding in texts without external tools, for instance, Artificial Intelligence (AI). In raising the AI era, the objective of this study is to investigate Indonesian EFL pre-service teachers' intertextuality in argumentative essays assisted by AI. Ten EFL pre-service teachers who attended sixteen courses in Academic Writing with neither teaching nor writing experience were recruited as participants. We employed a case study design to portray the nature of the phenomena, and the data were collected through documents (academic essays) to portray the practices, and interviews to represent teachers' beliefs on explicit and implicit intertextuality beyond their argumentative essays in facing AI. We employed content analysis from academic essays and interviews. The findings shows that that 1) EFL pre-service teachers mostly used reporting phrases and iconic references, but it was oriented to local references that targeted local audiences, so international references should be more practiced; and 2) EFL pre-service teachers' beliefs that assisted AI while writing argumentative essay was limited to writing accuracy, but it helped them to focus on intertextuality. Although they were enough to give sufficient intertextuality references in practice, they could not present their voices to tailor their arguments. Moreover, the intertextuality praxis and policy implications will be discussed in EFL pre-service teachers' argumentative essays assisted by AI.

The employment of the Pentigraf writing approach by the English lecturer and the students' perceptions of it were the subjects of a narrative inquiry, which was chosen as the research design. The study's findings show that: 1) The professor employs Pentigraf writing because it is straightforward, entertaining, and efficient. 2) The preservice lecturer's poor language competence was the biggest issue the lecturer faced when employing the Pentigraf writing approach. 3) Before implementing the Pentigraf writing approach, teaching materials must be prepared. 4)Students in classes three and four demonstrated positive attitudes toward the Pentigraf writing style by acknowledging that it made writing easier for them to learn, motivated them more, and made it more pleasant. This study's implications are meant to aid in the development of writing instruction methods.

Abstract: This essay traces the development of the custom of singing table songs known as Shabbat zemirot during Shabbat meals in medieval Europe. Though a popular custom, its medieval formation has yet to receive scholarly attention. Informal Shabbat table singing was likely common for centuries, yet the earliest extant instructions to sing specific songs were written in thirteenth-century northern France and appeared shortly thereafter in Ashkenaz and Italy. The many manuscripts containing Shabbat zemirot reveal the custom's spread, growth, and popularity in these regions. Though preserved in writing, Shabbat zemirot and their tunes were primarily disseminated orally by families singing within their homes. Such orality encouraged flexibility and diversity in how the custom was performed. Once the songs were printed in the sixteenth century, a more rigid construction of the practice and its repertoire took shape. Included as appendices are lists of manuscripts containing Shabbat zemirot and tables of the most common songs.

The use of rhetorical strategy in teaching writing has been a topic of discussion in ESL training programs since most teaching methodologies do not give the mother tongue a substantial role. This article presents findings from research on the rhetorical techniques pre-service teachers employ in writing both before and after receiving process-based writing instruction. The study focused on determining the writing techniques student teachers employ to complete an argumentative essay, and finding out how much pre-service teachers’ usage of writing methods is improved by using a rhetorical process approach to writing. The significance of the present study lies in the fact that it examines the writing abilities of Saudi students with different levels of language abilities and evaluates how rhetorical strategies help them in writing English easefully and with little or no flaws. The fundamental question to be probed through this study is to what extent rhetorical strategies can help teach successful writing to Saudi ESL learners. The data was obtained via the performance of an essay task utilizing two think-aloud protocols and based on a sample of 98 student teachers from Saudi Arabia. The findings of this study show rhetorical strategies such as generating ideas and rewriting are very essential in writing final essays by students. It is clear from the results that after students have mastered the choosing ideas process, they may include concepts that are relevant to the text. Professors should spend time, particularly teaching this kind of approach to help students become competent method users and writers generally, regardless of their audience. In concluding writing an article, it seemed like the strategy of translating from the native tongue to a foreign language was being utilized

The article deals with the engagement of the Ukrainian authors of travel essays about foreign life to the intelligence and spy activities in different forms, usually for performing the special tasks alongside with observation and making literary notes. Various textual ‘footprints’ in their travel writings prove this fact. In two interwar decades Ukrainian travel writings had a period of rise and rapid development; they were generously financed by publishing houses, editorial boards of the magazines, different state institutions and labor unions. Numerous books by amateur and experienced professional writers, predominantly about their trips around Ukrainian and other Soviet lands, were published in large numbers. Very often the travelers were professional military men, secret agents or followed out the instructions of the special service, openly recognizing it in their books. Not so many, but still a lot of travel writings described what had been seen, heard and read abroad. Crossing the border of the USSR required essential expenses in foreign currency and special permissions; therefore only selected representatives of literature could visit European and Asian countries. This fact makes one suspect them of cooperation with different intelligence institutions. The textual analysis of the books written by S. Holovanivskyi, O. Dosvitnii, K. Kotko, L. Nedolia, V. Polishchuk and others proves that these suspicions are well-grounded. It is evidenced by numerous slips, omissions, reports on rather strange travel routes, repeated meetings abroad with Soviet consular and embassy employees, political emigrants, illegal immigrants and left-wing artists. It is obvious that the essayists were the transmitters of secret information in oral form addressed both abroad and backwards, so that it could not be found by any customs officers or counterintelligence agents. It seems that such a secret mission influenced the texts of travel writings, intensifying their anti-Western, ‘anti-capitalist’ orientation and class bias.

ABSTRACT Most research on error correction has dealt with feedback strategies used in the classroom and the effect of these strategies on students’ performance. However, not much research has been conducted on pre-service teachers’ actual competence on giving written corrective feedback. With this idea in mind, a study was conducted in order to investigate the way pre-service teachers of English correct students’ errors in writing. For this, the participants were asked to complete an error correction task that required the teacher to mark a student’s opinion essay in the way they would normally do as part of their teaching practices and to answer a questionnaire related to the way they had corrected the task. The results showed that most teachers tend to correct errors comprehensively, rather than selectively, opting for direct rather than indirect feedback strategies.

This study explores the impact of rhetorical strategies on the writing techniques of pre-service teachers. It specifically examines how process-based writing instruction, rooted in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), enhances the ability of student teachers to employ effective writing methods in crafting argumentative essays. Utilizing a sample of 98 student teachers from Greece, the research was conducted through a performance-based essay task, supported by two think-aloud protocols. This approach allowed for a detailed examination of the writing techniques used by pre-service teachers, both before and after receiving process-based writing instruction. The study focuses on the application and improvement of writing methods through the use of a rhetorical process approach. The results highlight the significance of rhetorical strategies, such as idea generation and rewriting, in the development of effective writing skills. The study reveals a clear improvement in the ability of students to choose and integrate relevant ideas into their essays after mastering these techniques. Additionally, the findings suggest the frequent use of translation strategies from native to foreign languages in concluding an article. This research underscores the importance of teaching rhetorical strategies in pre-service teacher training programs. By focusing on these techniques, educators can better equip student teachers with the skills necessary to become proficient writers, capable of addressing various audiences effectively. The study advocates for a greater emphasis on process-based instruction to enhance writing competencies in educational settings.

For this reason, female educators such as lecturers and teachers from various regions in Indonesia were invited to attend virtual tutoring through the Zoom platform. This training and mentoring activities were carried out in several meetings and delivered by several resource persons regarding the techniques of writing opinion essays and supporting documents such as study objective and personal statement, needed to continue studies, especially at foreign universities. Nevertheless, despite having received a positive response from the participants, this training was still limited only to the introduction of opinion essays and structure in essay writing and only concerned with writing study objective and personal statement. Therefore, the recommendation for the following programs is providing training that discusses other types of essays on the IELTS test and other skills needed to improve the English competence of Indonesian female educators. AbstractThe essay argues that resources in Scripture, tradition, and social theory are important but insufficient to the task of teaching social ethics. Liberation ethics promotes not only diverse epistemologies to evaluate the structures that mediate social relations, but also moral courage to execute social responsibility. Given this agenda, teaching social ethics also requires community-based learning experiences, democratic classrooms, and the social commitment of the academy. Drawing on student writing and the example of the author's own academic institution, the essay argues that multiple resources and sites are needed to educate students in ethical theory and moral courage.

This study aims to explore different linguistics patterns of Argumentative essays written for Central Superior Services/ Provincial Management Service (CSS/PMS) in Pakistan by using Biber’s Multidimensional approach (MDA). This is a corpus based study which is experimental in nature. The function of this approach is to explain the functional association of linguistic patterns systematically. This study has been performed by using second level of MD (New MD). The researchers have collected the corpus of 30 essays which are argumentative in nature. These essays are downloaded from the popular online forums which are used for the preparation of competitive exams/ current affairs issues in Pakistan. The researchers claim that Pakistan CSS/PMS aspirants focus more on sharing information rather than building arguments in their essay writing papers at CSS/PMS level. Doing so, they do not fulfill the linguistic requirement of the said papers. The ideas presented by them are without logical reasoning or research based facts. The results of these essays show that these aspirants share information in these essays rather than building arguments through cohesion and coherence. Most of the Pakistani leaners of English Language do not have the basic knowledge of grammar. So, they don’t know how to develop personal viewpoints while attempting essay paper. The researchers have analyzed these linguistic gaps through multidimensional analysis of selected essays that may help the CSS/PMS aspirants to fix these linguistic gaps.

This essay builds upon work surrounding reception and the figure of the early modern woman writer to examine textual instances in which women’s writing has been “found” or manufactured: where writing falsely or tenuously attributed to historical women was circulated under their signatures as their voice. These fictions of production circulated as prosopopoeiae within women’s lifetimes alongside writers’ own scribal and print textual productions, as well as in the centuries following their deaths in the service of editorial, antiquarian, and historical projects. The complexity of naming and attribution in the texts discussed suggests that any distinct separation of speaker and author fails to recognize the centrality of prosopopoeiae to the rhetorical formations underwriting conceptions of the early modern woman writer. The essay newly argues for prosopopoeia as a generative figure of speech that enabled rather than restricted formations of the English woman writer and her participation in literary history.

Abstract: Hmong American gymnast Sunisa "Suni" Lee won the gold medal in the individual all-around event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This essay analyzes the media frenzy surrounding Lee's rise to Olympic stardom in US gymnastics. In particular, it focuses on how the media narrate Lee's family and Hmong ethnic history of being refugees to becoming an Olympic gold medalist. This essay deconstructs how the state exceptionalizes this history in the context of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in service of the imperial US nation-state in ways that recuperates US empire and bolsters US nationalism. The essay reveals the ways that ongoing anti-Asian racism in the US contradicts the state's claim to Lee's gold medal. Ultimately, the essay argues that Hmong American writing during Lee's Olympic journey presents a "state-less critique" that situates Lee's success in her ethnic Hmong American community and not within the nation-state.

Central to the future of rhetoric and composition (or writing studies or whatever label we use) is the service mission of composition: to teach students to write. But that term service has not and will not serve us well. This essay examines the limitations and dangers of a service mission and explores a different model, that of a franchise, a public trust thatlicenses us to control the largest block of classes on most campuses but also makes us responsible for the nation’s ability to write. The franchise model carries its own limitations, but it may also point to possibilities of great new promise and familiar danger.

Scripts are sites of religious, cultural and political power. Although scripts are often viewed solely as technical devices in the service of meaning, the particular histories of scripts’ coming into being, their uses and sometimes disappearance can tell us much about shifting religious agendas, memory, and attachments to community, place, and particular literary cultures. In my essay I explore the history of writing in Java, including the story of the letters’ creation, to think about cultural and religious transformations, the relationship of foreign to local, and the powerful hold certain texts have on the imagination.

E-rater® is an automated essay scoring system that uses natural language processing techniques to extract features from essays and to model statistically human holistic ratings. Educational Testing Service has investigated the use of e-rater, in conjunction with human ratings, to score one of the two writing tasks on the TOEFL-iBT® writing section. In this article we describe the TOEFL iBT writing section and an e-rater model proposed to provide one of two ratings for the Independent writing task. We discuss how the evidence for a process that uses both human and e-rater scoring is relevant to four components in a validity argument: (a) Evaluation — observations of performance on the writing task are scored to provide evidence of targeted writing skills; (b) Generalization — scores on the writing task provide estimates of expected scores over relevant parallel versions of the task and across raters; (c) Extrapolation — expected scores on the writing task are consistent with other measures of writing ability; and (d) Utilization — scores on the writing task are useful in educational contexts. Finally, we propose directions for future research that will strengthen the case for using complementary methods of scoring to improve the assessment of EFL writing.

This article examines News from Nowhere, William Morris's late nineteenth-century utopian romance. It seeks, first, to establish John Stuart Mill as a crucial influence on the text. It argues that, in News from Nowhere, Morris engaged extensively with Mill's mid-century essay On Liberty. It shows how Morris dramatized Mill's “harm principle”; how he challenged the notion that custom must necessarily be antithetical to the “spirit of liberty”; and how he enacted Mill's stricture that “if opponents of all important truths do not exist,” then they must be invented. The article seeks, second, to contest the view that Morris was writing in indignant response to Edward Bellamy's portrait of utopia, Looking Backward. The article argues, instead, that it was rather the Fabians who incurred Morris's indignation. It attempts to demonstrate that if News from Nowhere was indeed an answer to another book, it was an answer to Fabian Essays.

The purpose of this article is to elaborate the many literary allusions that Simone Weil used in her ultimate work: L' Enracinement, translated as The Need for Roots, to achieve her goal of encouraging her fellow countrymen to create a new postwar society. Understanding how she used the riches of the French and Western Literary Cannon, less easily grasped by those not educated in the French Education system, enriches the understanding of Weil's purpose and skill in writing on many levels, simultaneously for different target audiences. Underlying her stress on the need for truth and honesty about a county's past and present, with discernable respect for every person, is her foundational belief in the spiritual destiny of every human being. Examining her literary allusions in detail to show her clever subversion of traditionally accepted interpretations brings a new dimension to Simone Weil studies, while underlining the relevance of this essay to contemporary dilemmas.

Marmaduke Pickthall, a half-forgotten British novelist of the early twentieth century, has come back to the spotlight over the past few years. His Near Eastern novels and short stories have started to receive attention in contemporary scholarship but not his two autobiographies. This essay aims at tackling the more neglected piece of the two, With the Turk in Wartime, that deserves attention because of its intricate amalgamation of several features of the genre of autobiography as manifested across its history within the tradition of English literature. Analysis finds that Pickthall’s autobiography has some Romantic, Victorian, and Modern elements as well as some old characteristics of the genre elaborately interwoven into its structure. The study also traces the use that Pickthall makes of this unique autobiography and how the commingling of diverse elements allows him to turn a usually subjective genre into a public cause and dedicate it to the service of Islam. This essay highlights both the diversity that the literary history of the genre lends to Pickthall’s autobiography and the socio-political service it renders to the faith that the author has long esteemed and will ultimately convert to not long after writing this autobiography.

AbstractThe permanent marking of human bodies by branding and tattooing was practiced throughout the entire three millennia of the cuneiform record. Brands and tattoos were inflicted on slaves as a means of either marking human or divine ownership, or as a method of punishment for slaves who had already run away. This practice was surprisingly consistent; cuneiform tablets from the early third millennium list branded persons and animals owned by the temple household, while documents from the Achaemenid period detail legal disputes involving marked slaves. As the Near Eastern economy became increasingly international, slaves were marked in multiple languages ensuring the maintenance of social order across a broad geographical scope. Mesopotamian branding and tattoo practices had long-lasting consequences; the Greeks and Romans adopted the custom, the Egyptians began to mark prisoners of war, and the Bible prohibits skin marking in certain contexts. This essay provides a broad overview of the textual evidence for branding and tattooing throughout Ancient Mesopotamian history, placing it within the context of a civilization in which writing on natural bodies – animate or otherwise – was profoundly meaningful.

The study examined a corpus of argumentative essays written on a range of topics in EFL didactics by a group of pre-service EFL teachers (hereafter – participants). The corpus involved two rounds of argumentative essays written by the participants and their respective controls (nonteacher EFL students). The frequency of self-mentions in the corpus was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (IBM 2011) in terms of raw values, and the computer program WordSmith (Scott 2008) as normalised data per 1000 words. The results of the quantitative analysis revealed that the frequency of the self-mention we decreased, whereas the frequency of the self-mention I increased in the second round of essays. These findings and their linguo-didactic implications are further discussed in the article.

Fields of language practice such as education, the media, the civil service, or, indeed, literature are all places where official, and therefore institutionalised languages, prevail. At the same time, they open up spaces of social values and recognition, thus offering the opportunity for declining minority languages to enter and permeate those spaces. This is why a strategy of active promotion of minority cultures is needed to ensure that they are not controlled by the dominant practices. The Corsican language is a case in point. This essay introduces three forms of identity-expression in Corsican literature – namely oraliture, militant writing, and Literature – and subsequently relocates the above issues within the cultural context of Corsica.

Abstract This essay proposes that What Is Philosophy? (1991), written in collaboration with Félix Guattari, not only presents a summary of Gilles Deleuze’s late creative period and, to some extent, a recapitulation of his entire oeuvre but also constitutes his third masterwork. The essay begins by tracing Deleuze’s three periods, especially the development of his thought during the last period, and the process of writing his final book. Then it explores the inextricable connection between the method of creation that results from What Is Philosophy? and its stylistic devices. Through its refined composition and succinct prose, the book puts itself at the service of the approach that leads to bringing forth philosophical concepts, and it attunes the reader to the creative activity. Thus, like The Logic of Sense (1969) and A Thousand Plateaus (1980), it forms a masterwork in which Deleuze’s philosophical efforts that spanned a whole period are condensed and mobilized such that while reading one finds oneself exposed to these efforts and is forced to continue them.

In this paper, we describe and evaluate two state-of-the-art systems for identifying and correcting writing errors involving English articles and prepositions. Criterion SM, developed by Educational Testing Service, and ESL Assistant , developed by Microsoft Research, both use machine learning techniques to build models of article and preposition usage which enable them to identify errors and suggest corrections to the writer. We evaluated the effects of these systems on users in two studies. In one, Criterion provided feedback about article errors to native and non-native speakers who were writing an essay for a college-level psychology course. The results showed a significant reduction in the number of article errors in the final essays of the non-native speakers. In the second study, ESL Assistant was used by non-native speakers who were composing email messages. The results indicated that users were selective in their choices among the system’s suggested corrections and that, as a result, they were able to increase the proportion of valid corrections by making effective use of feedback.

Toni Morrison represents the improvisations of life in the 1920s and posits her novel Jazz as a work that negotiates sound as a distinguishing characteristic of her writing genre. Many critics have described Morrison’s approach as a Jazzthetic strategy and as such, her rhetorical move enables a renovation of traditional aspects of the novel to render life as complex as a jazz composition itself. This article analyzes Morison’s methods and posits the use of jazz strategies to mimic the displacement, fragmentation, and strife experienced by African Americans during the Great Migration. This essay also intervenes in the debate between the relationship of language and music to examine the ways that Morrison oralizes fiction and engages in a form of cultural circularity, thereby asserting the authenticity of jazz alongside the tension of the Great Migration. Additionally, this essay explains the ways that Morrison makes clear the implications of migrant cultural expression in service of identity formation, suggesting that the micro-novels in the novel Jazz are contributors to a larger ensemble that functions epistemologically to render the African American experience as central to American identity.

The first group involves the essay writing of pre-service teachers; the second group involves whole group discussions; and the last group contains individual semi-structured interviews. The results demonstrate that the pre-service teachers often prefer using formal discourse to define proof but have certain difficulties in making sense of these definitions. The general opinion of the participants about the purposes of proof concentrates on verification and explanation. Another problem examined in the study was concerned with whether the pre-service teachers' opinions about the meaning and purposes of proof can change. The results showed that their opinions may change regarding both. However, the changes involved expansion of their previous opinions by adding new dimensions, without moving in another direction.

Every region in Indonesia must have a tradition that is carried out before or after the wedding procession. Many things are behind the differences in traditions in each region, for example, customs that have existed since long ago in each region. One of the traditions that exist in Java, especially in the Magelang Regency area before or before the wedding is selamatan. Selamatan or usually called selametan is a tradition carried out before the wedding day. This tradition has been around for a long time and has become a hereditary custom of the Javanese community, especially in the Magelang Regency area, Central Java. The purpose of writing this scientific essay is to explore and examine the nature of selametan in marriage based on factual events held in Mandungan Hamlet, Bringin Village, Srumbung Subdistrict, Magelang Regency and see the phenomenon based on Urf review. The research method used is fieldwork, observation, and interviews, with a normative juridical approach with Urf theory. The results of this study indicate that the marriage tradition in Bringin Village is very close in upholding the Javanese tradition and culture in the marriage procession, one of the series of ceremonies is the selametan tradition, this is in line with the theory of al-adah muhakkamah which has been going on for dark ancestors.
