<span lang="EN-US">Online learning has become an integral part of today’s educational system, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. In art and design classrooms, which usually require face-to-face critique as part of a cycle of action and reflection, students may face challenges with the rapid transition to online assessment and feedback approaches. Consequently, it is curial to investigate these challenges as well as students’ perceptions towards the online assessment and feedback methods that they have experienced. This student-oriented study investigated art and design students’ preferences, concerns, and challenges with online assessment and feedback strategies. Moreover, it explored the most effective online assessment and feedback tools and applications for art and design courses. The research adopted a quantitative method by conducting a questionnaire with 104 art and design students of a university in Bahrain and a university in Jordan. Based on the findings, the study seeks to ultimately provide art and design educators with insights and recommendations for the most effective art and design assessment practices.</span>

In 1320, Pope John XXII launched a doctrinal enterprise of some import: the assimilation of practices of black magic into the crime of heresy. As was his custom, John sought the opinion of experts before taking a final decision that would entail, among other consequences, extending the jurisdiction of the inquisition to cover cases of black magic. In his recent study on medieval demonology, Alain Boureau has suggested that the question that truly concerned the pope was not witchcraft or ritual magic per se, but the role of the devil in these practices. Boureau based his thesis on a wide-ranging theory of late medieval representations of individual subjectivity and society, on the principle of “pact” or covenant between two free-willing parties. Away from old, static forms of social hierarchization, the fourteenth century favors a contractual structure that places the emphasis on the voluntary nature of the relation between individuals in society and between humans and God. Boureau develops his argument on the basis of the response offered by one of the members of the 1320 commission, the Franciscan Enrico del Carretto. Bishop of Lucca, Enrico had been among the experts in charge of judging the orthodoxy of the Franciscan Spirituals in 1318, and had also participated in the discussion towards the preparation of the bullCum inter nonnullos. We are thus in the presence of one of John XXII's curial cohort. Boureau accords particular value to Enrico's response because he is the only member of the commission who seems to draw attention to the real efficacity of demonic causality in black magic, thus offering the first explicit evidence of thetournant demonologiquetaking place in the medieval Church between the end of the thirteenth and the beginning of the fourteenth century.

By 1190, King Richard I of England (1189-1199) had departed for the Third Crusade and had settled on William Longchamp, royal chancellor and bishop of Ely, as the chief justiciar, the king’s regent during the royal absence. But before Richard had even left the European continent, Longchamp’s justiciarship had provoked a powerful reaction from those subjected to it. The hue and cry lifted against the chief justiciar by leaders of the revolt that ousted him included accusations that Longchamp filled England and its offices with “foreigners and unknown men” and that he ruled without the appares, associates whom Richard had included in the regency to assist the chief justiciar. Recent research has shown that the latter charge is patently untrue but the former, utilizing foreigners and others unfamiliar with England and its government, was fundamentally true, at least with regard to justice and the shrievalties. Does Longchamp’s style of management repeat itself with castles and what were the implications for him, the kingdom, and the king? A cursory glance at events during his justiciarship shows that castles played a large role in the narrative, from the massacre of the Jews at York Castle to the arrest of Archbishop Geoffrey at Dover Castle. Though the evidence is of a more tentative nature than that for judicial activity and shrievalties, Longchamp employed in this critical position men close to him, both personal dependents and tested curial servants, a pattern of appointment markedly different from that of the king. Richard I’s practices benefited the baronage, but the chancellor’s determination to bring as many castles as possible under his direct control worked to alienate the chief justiciar from his subjects and disastrously eroded his power base.

This study is built upon the living conditions and life history of the maroon community of Curiaú de Dentro, in the Brazilian State of Amapá. These conditions manifest themselves in beliefs, values, symbols and representations, which conform and signify the eating practices as bodily and emotional needs. The subjects of this study are the women, men and children of this village, and the object their food habits and beliefs and all the values that speak of food, the body, everyday life and nutrition. The methodology is built on the anthropological, social and anthropometric approaches, making use of participatory observation, application of questionnaires, gathering of anthropometric data. In Curiaú de Dentro, the eating practices reflect the interaction of the afro-descendent culture with the environment, establishing themselves as a strategy to face hunger and periods of food scarcity and abundance. The reflection of the daily food practices of the families can be seen in the high prevalence of acute malnutrition in the children below six years of age, as an indication of the level of food and nutritional insecurity faced by the community, a consequence of the seasonal difference in access to food, the absence of food supplementation programs, inadequate sanitation, and low coverage of health services. The emotions values, perceptions, beliefs and the eating practices perceived in the study reflect the degree of social exclusion in which the inhabitants of Curiaú live.

Article 184 paragraph (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code has limitedly determined legal evidence according to the law, however, in the last few years, the Indonesian Court of Justice has emerged Amicus Curiae. In this study, it will be discussed the legal basis for judges to apply the Amicus Curiae as evidence of a crime in positive law in Indonesia today (ius constitutum) then the second issue will discuss the Amicus Curiae as evidence development in the KUHAP in the future come (ius constituendum). The research method used is normative juridical or library research related to normative legal substances, to find the truth based on scientific logic from the normative side by examining library materials or secondary data consisting of primary and secondary legal materials. Amicus Curiae is a legal concept that is not well known in Indonesia which adheres to the Civil Law legal system. The legal concept of Amicus Curiae is indeed only practiced in the traditions of countries that adhere to the common law legal system. The proof using the Amicus Curiae concept has been found in many cases in Indonesia. However, legally the Amicus Curiae has not been regulated in positive law in Indonesia.

The judicial system in Indonesia is dynamic and adaptive to the development of science and law, not least within the scope of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia, one of which relates to the amicus curiae (friends of the judiciary). In practice, amicus curiae are generally presented in cases or trials that get public attention and the livelihoods of many people, such as the environment, land, labor, and so on. Nevertheless, there is no regulation or Supreme Court Regulation on the application of amicus curiae in the trial, but various practices have occurred within the court. This paper will discuss: (a) how the concept of amicus curiae is in the justice system in several countries, (b) the practice and application of amicus curiae in the judiciary in Indonesia, and (c) the opportunity for the Supreme Court to issue regulations or circulars that seek to regulate the implementation of the amicus curiae as part of legal developments in Indonesia. This writing uses a qualitative method with a normative juridical approach. The results of this paper conclude that amicus curiae have become a good practice in the judicial system in Indonesia, especially in public cases, and the Supreme Court has the authority to make arrangements through PERMA as a foundation and procedure guide for all judicial personnel and society in Indonesia.

Abstract The ancient sources frequently mention heated debates during meetings of the Roman senate under the early empire. Such debates could become so intense they might even threaten to impede the Senate’s decision-making abilities. Nevertheless, senatorial debate in the curia was not necessarily dysfunctional: in fact, it had a crucial instrumental function. Potential dissent among members of the senate could be discussed and settled before voting began, taking it out of the decision-making process proper. The symbolic dimensions of senatorial altercationes were if possible even more important, because the existence of communicative dissent showed that discussions still happened in the curia: proof that the Senate was still a functioning political entity. A combined agent-centred and institutional-historical methodological approach allows us to track not only individual practices of dispute, competition, and raising one’s profile, but to perceive more clearly the impact and the function disputes had for the Senate’s debating culture as a whole.

The present note sets out best practices that the European Commission (the “Commission”) and the international arbitrator (the “Arbitrator” or the “Arbitral Tribunal”,as the case may be) are invited to apply by way of guidance in their mutual dealings within the course of international arbitral proceedings. A number of these best practices may, at first sight, seem controversial to the extent that they have not yet been tested in real practice.Accordingly, the present guidelines seek to set out what is deemed to be best practice in terms of the Commission’s involvement as amicus curiae in international arbitration proceedings from the viewpoint of the ICC Task Force. As the title of the document suggests, the best practices put forward do not bind either the Commission or the Arbitrator, and are hence to be understood as mere guidelines to facilitate and guarantee the successful employment of arbitration as a mechanism in EC–competition–law–related arbitral proceedings, such as specified below.

Biodiesel obtained from vegetable oils as an alternative fuel for diesel engine is becoming increasingly important. The biodiesel quality and yield are affected by the properties of the oil used. The properties of the oil vary from region to region depending on the nature of the soil in which oil crops are cultivated, agricultural practices, rainfall etc. In this study the raw oil from Jatropha Curcas seeds grown in the western Ghat section of South India was tested for its physiochemical properties to determine its suitability for biodiesel production. A bench scale, compact biodiesel processor was developed locally by the authors and biodiesel was produced from raw Jatropha Curcas oil using alkali based transesterification process. The physiochemical properties of the biodiesel produced meet the ASTM standards but the yield was comparatively low (80%v/v) because of the high free fatty acid content (13.7 mg KOH/g of oil) in the raw Jatropha Curcas oil. The brake thermal efficiency of the biodiesel produced as a fuel in a four stroke single cylinder diesel engine coupled with an electric generator (34.19%) at maximum load conditions shows the possibility of utilization of biodiesel produced as a fuel in the diesel engine.

This is Part II of a two-part article that deals with the phenomenon of free zone arbitration in the United Arab Emirates. Part I, which was published in the last issue of this journal, discussed in some detail the concept and practice of free zone arbitration in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). This Part II discusses free zone arbitration in the more recently established Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) and highlights the main differences between the two. In doing so, Part II will take a closer look at the judicial and legislative framework of the ADGM, including in particular the main provisions and the operation of the 2015 ADGM Arbitration Regulations, the institutional framework of arbitration in the ADGM, the curial function of the ADGM Courts in ADGM-seated arbitrations and the recognition and enforcement of domestic (non-)ADGM and foreign arbitral awards in the ADGM. Part II also explores to what extent the ADGM Courts are envisaged to serve as a host or conduit jurisdiction in the terms proposed and practiced by their DIFC counterparts.

The development of testamentary jurisdiction by the English Church authorities has already received considerable attention, and it is generally held that by the close of the thirteenth century the basic probate procedures had been well established, even if some administrative practices continued to be refined. This paper aims to look at the practical evidence of the York archiepiscopal records from the thirteenth century to the Reformation from an archival and administrative viewpoint - the concern is not so much with the canon law touching wills and testaments, or with the testamentary disputes and litigation in the archiepiscopal court, the Curia Eboracensis, or indeed with the contents of the wills proved before the ecclesiastical authorities, but with the routine practicalities of the exercise of probate and intestacy administrations.

The article examines the importance of the retinue in representing a medieval self-appointed ruler’s power. The paper shows this group of people to be the main link in the symbolic, epistolary and ceremonial communication between the impostor and his subjects. Using the examples of impostors who pretended to be Frederick II Hohenstaufen in Sicily and in Germany during the second half of the 13th century, the author finds out what public everyday royal practices were reenacted by the impostors’ assistants to make various social groups believe they were the real monarchs. These practices included sending fake letters on behalf of Frederick II, imitating activities of the imperial curia, and the ceremony of entering the city. In the course of the study, the author arrives at a conclusion that the (re)constructed representations of power were closely associated with memories of emperor Frederick II that the 1260-1280s generation still kept. The impostor's retinue made a point of imitating the modus imperandi of the last Hohenstaufen emperor, actualizing the most vivid and typical images of his power performance.

The growing and management of Jatropha curcas, either on private, public or community land is poorly documented and there is little field experience that is being shared especially in North western Nigeria where it is still grown wild. The few growers are unable to achieve the optimum economic benefit from the plants. However, the recent importance attached to Jatropha in the Nigerian Savanna agro-ecology have revealed that, the crop is subject to attack by a diversity of arthropod pests’ species and diseases, some of which may warrant control measures taken against them. Diseases caused by a number of plant pathogenic (disease-causing) organisms such as fungi, bacteria, virus etc often have a significant economic impact on yield and quality of Jatropha plant, hence the need for adopting control measures become imperative in order to be managed for successful production. Therefore, there is need to conduct a research on common diseases affecting the growth and development of J. curcas and possible management practices in north western Nigeria.

The tropical multiuse tree Jatropha curcas L. (jatropha) is highly promoted as oilseed crop for biodiesel production and for climate change mitigation, but cultivation practices require further research. The objectives of this study were to assess the effects of varying plant spacings (2.0 m × 4 m compared to 1.5 m × 4 m), crop establishment methods (raising plantlets in a nursery prior to planting to the field compared to direct sowing) and genotypes on seed yield, seed quality and plant height, recorded at a dry-subhumid location in Madagascar (Ihosy) and at a humid location in Cameroon (Batchenga). Averaged across treatment variants and genotypes, seed yield and seed oil content were higher at the dry-subhumid site and in particular the narrower spacing reached higher seed yields per unit area than the wider spacing. At the humid site, plant growth was characterized by strong accumulation of biomass. The establishment method tested at the dry-subhumid site showed no significant differences in the recorded parameters. Our results encourage to re-think common practices in jatropha cultivation and underpin the importance of the correct choice of location, genotype and agronomic practices considering the interactions between all factors.

AbstractIt has become a standard feature of litigation for amici to appear before courts, acting as the vindicator of rights for the politically powerless and marginalized. Their appearance has thus contributed to the promotion and protection of human rights before municipal courts and international tribunals. They have done this through the submission of briefs that seek to broaden perspectives of cases and by advancing innovative legal and factual viewpoints, thus assisting the courts in reaching appropriate conclusions. In Botswana, amicus curiae participation is still at a nascent stage. This is largely due to inflexible rules of standing and the general lack of knowledge of the potential usefulness of the institution by the judiciary. This article argues that, to enhance amicus participation in litigation, thereby enhancing the epistemological quality of its public law jurisprudence, Botswana must pay close attention to the practices and experiences of South Africa where amicus participation has resulted in the phenomenal growth of constitutional jurisprudence.

The root rot disease in Jatropha curcas L. caused by Rhizoctonia. bataticola (Taub.) Butler has been recorded in causing 10-12 per cent mortality of 20-30 days old seedlings of Jatropha curcasin southern Haryana. The incidence of this disease has also been observed from other parts of Haryana too. Induction of systemic resistance in host plants through microbes and their bioactive metabolites are attaining popularity in modern agricultural practices. Studies on the plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria induced resistance in Jatropha curcas through phenyl propanoid metabolism against Rhizoctoniabataticola were undertaken at Chaudhary Charan Singh, Haryana Agricultural University, Regional Research Station, Bawal. Three plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) viz., Pseudomonas maltophila, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Bacillus subtilis were evaluated for their potential to induce systemic resistance in Jatropha against root rot. The maximum increase of 97 per cent in total phenols, 120 per cent in peroxidase, 123 per cent in polyphenol oxidase, 101 per cent in phenylalanine ammonia lyase and 298 per cent in tyrosine ammonia lyase was detected in plants raised with Pseudomonas fluorescens+ Rhizoctoniaba-taticola inoculation in Jatropha curcas at 10 days post inoculation against control except total phenols where it was maximum (99%) at 30 DPI. There was slight or sharp decline in these parameters with age irrespective of inoculations. The pathogen challenged plants showed lower levels of total phenols and enzymes. The observations revealed that seed bacterization with Pseudomonas fluorescens results in accumulation of phenolics and battery of enzymes in response to pathogen infection and thereby induce resistance systemically.

Jatropha curcas L. is a perennial plant, that emerged as a biodiesel crop attracting the great interest of researchers. However, it is considered a semi-wild plant and needed to apply crop-improving practices to enhance its full yield potential. This study was conducted to improve the growth and development of the J. curcas plant by exogenous application of Gibberellic acid (GA), indole acetic acid (IAA), and fertilizer (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium (NPK)). The experiment was conducted in pots in triplicate and 100 ppm and 250 ppm of GA and IAA were applied separately while NPK was applied in two levels (30 and 60 g/pot). The results revealed a significant difference in growth parameters with the application of hormones and fertilizer. The highest shoot length (47%), root length (63%), root fresh weight (72%), and root dry weight (172%) were shown by plants treated with GA 250 ppm. While plants treated with NPK 60 g showed the highest increases in shoot fresh weight and shoot dry weight compared to control plants. The highest increase in leaves number (274%) and branches number (266%) were shown by the plants treated with GA 100 ppm and GA 250 ppm, respectively, while GA 250 ppm and IAA 250 ppm highly increased stem diameter (123%) and stem diameter was also shown by GA 250 ppm-treated plants. NPK 60 g highly increased proximate composition (protein content, carbohydrate, fat, moisture content, and ash content) compare with hormones and control plants. Our results concluded the optimized concentration of IAA, GA, and NPK significantly increases J. curcas growth vigor.

ABSTRACT As a part of a programme on possible utilization of indigenous plant extracts in pest management practices, acetone extracts of eight plant species collected in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, were tested for their larvicidal activity against the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti L. The buds of Tail Pepper, Piper cubeba L, Capers Capparis spinosa L and Indian Black Berry, Syzygium cumini L. the florals of Indian Oleander, Nerium indicum (Mill.), Indian Cork tree, Millingtonia hortensis L. and Royal Poinciana, Delonix regia L., leaves of Wood Apple, Limonia acidissima L. and Physic Nut, Jatropha curcas L were collected locally, shade dried and extracted in the soxhelet apparatus. Six of the 8 plants studied exhibited toxicity against the 3rd instar larvae. The extracts of D. regia and L. acidissima were most active and showed toxicity up to 100 %. The dry bud extractions of S. cumini and J. curcas also showed significant larval mortality. Acetone extract of P. cubeba and C. spinosa were less active, and needed higher concentrations to obtain 50% toxicity. Hence, these active plant extracts may be used in control of the A. aegypti causing dengue fever and many other diseases.

Abstract The discovery of an anonymous Quito Sermon dating back to 1741 in the Fondo Curia 2223 in the Archives of the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome dealing with the historical and metaphorical transit between Rome and the “Orient” of the Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier (1506–52), suggests links between the universalist vocation of the Catholic mission, and the local American missionary experiences which the text omits. This article argues that the sermon has a universal resonance that invokes the East in America (as it is written to be read in public); it is a sensory experience that can be adapted to different realities (the trips, relics, and missions of Francis Xavier), but also noted is the omission of local missionary practices (i.e., the sermon is presented as produced in a place unmentioned in the text). It is above all, a reformulation of the “missionary in the world” of Western philosophical commentaries and texts that look toward the East but are enunciated in America.

Both R. Howard Bloch and Jean Leclercq have recently included the name of Pope Innocent HI (1198-1216) among the ranks of medieval misogynistic writers. Such an anti-feminist designation results from his treatise De miseria humanae conditionis (1195), which he authored whilst a cardinal deacon, as Lothario de Segni. However, the passages cited by Bloch and Leclercq only appear misogynistic when we consider them superficially. If we look at the entire corpus of Innocent’s writings and his actions, in their proper contexts, we discover that this Pope can not be so easily categorized. Rather, our analysis will show that there is much more diversity in his perspective on gender than originally thought. The De miseria should be seen in its unique context when evaluating its attitude towards women. Books I and HI of the treatise belonged to the contemptus mundi tradition which emphasised the vileness and misery of human existence. Moreover, John C. Moore has recently proposed that Book II is a speculum curialis which reflected the questionable moral practices Innocent observed during his career in the Roman Curia.

To date, almost 74 years since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (the UDHR), the tensions between universalism and cultural relativism in the field of human rights, whose provenance can be traced back to the debates surrounding the drafting and adoption of the UDHR, still linger on, playing out on the national stage in countries such as Kenya. At its core, universalism argues that all human rights inhere in all individuals without distinction, and that they must stand even when in when in opposition to established cultural practices. In contrast, cultural relativism holds that no particular culture is superior to another, and centers on the need for forbearance and respect towards each culture to avoid imperialist tendencies of imposing beliefs. This paper argues that these binary ideological viewpoints are magnified in the context of female genital mutilation. Through an analysis of the case of Tatu Kamau v Attorney General & 2 others; Equality Now & 9 others (Interested Parties); Katiba Institute & another (amicus curiae) [2021] eKLR, it is proposed that a cultural approach is needed in addition to legal measures in place to combat the practice.

Abstract This article explores how diseases were contemplated and faced in Portuguese America in the early 1820s, shortly before the consolidation of the political rupture with Portugal that made Brazil an independent country. It analyzes who the individuals called to treat the diseases of the suffering population were, along with their knowledge and their therapies. To achieve this, we must begin by taking a step back in time, emphasizing the influences of the reforms of the Portuguese Empire on medical knowledge in the second half of the eighteenth century. The first section of the article is dedicated to exploring the complex and multifaceted healing practices in Portuguese America, resulting from the mixtures between traditional concepts about the body and the diseases that were part of the cultural references of the local population. The article then moves on to analyze some of the institutional and political conflicts involved in the consolidation of scientific medicine in Brazil, especially after the transfer of the Portuguese Court to Rio de Janeiro. Despite the political prestige of academic doctors, practitioners of the healing arts had broad support from the population, in addition to finding social mobility in the breaches of clientelistic relationships that marked the political culture of the period.

A new disease was identified on the biofuel crop Jatropha curcas in 2012 in Burkina Faso that is causing serious yield losses. The disease was found to be widespread in both Sissili and Comoé Provinces. It causes characteristic leaf lesions, fruit necrosis, and cankers on young stems and branches. There was evidence of multiple infections on plants over the growing season, with regrowth evident from below old cankers, but there was little fruit production from infected branches. A detailed monitoring and assessment was undertaken of the disease progress in a severely infected field, over a 7-week period. The disease symptoms progressed from chlorosis through a necrotic phase and, in approximately 83% of replicates, stem cankers developed that resulted in dieback and lodging of branches. Colletotrichum truncatum and a member of the species complex C. gloeosporioides sensu lato were consistently isolated from fresh stem samples showing early symptoms (chlorosis). Koch's postulates were undertaken, to establish the pathogenicity of the two species. No symptoms were observed on plants inoculated with C. gloeosporioides; however, leaf and stem lesions developed after inoculation with C. truncatum, which was reisolated from the diseased tissue, confirming it as the disease-causing agent. Preliminary management practices for the disease are proposed.

Abstract Trade has an important and lasting impact on biodiversity conservation. This is especially true for two of the most unique mega-diverse ecosystems in the world: Australia and China. Not only does trade perpetuate unsustainable economic practices that exacerbate biodiversity loss, but it also has a direct influence on the ability for both Australia and China to implement effective policies aimed at biodiversity conservation. This article will explore the nexus between biodiversity conservation and international trade through the lens of the Australia – China trade relationship. To explore this issue, this article will first discuss the ideological foundations of the WTO, viz, a rules-based system aimed at promoting trade liberalisation. Whilst the WTO does not specifically regulate biodiversity, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) does contain several provisions as general exceptions which enable Members to reconcile competing priorities of trade liberalisation on one hand, and sustainable development on the other. This article will then explore the trade and biodiversity nexus present within the China and Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA). Whilst ChAFTA contains several innovations which can improve biodiversity conservation, the Agreement also contains provisions which inhibit transparency and the ability for environmental non-government organisations to submit amicus curiae briefs in ISDS arbitration. Through a comparative analysis of other bilateral trade treaties, this article advocates for an approach which addresses these issues, including addressing systemic concerns regarding global biodiversity conservation.

Phenological studies on three morphologically distinct accessions of physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) were conducted in the Brazilian Savannah biome. Plant growth rate, flowering, fruit formation and development were measured in order to establish appropriate management practices for increasing productivity. The accessions CNPAE-102 (toxic and susceptible to powdery mildew), CNPAE-169 (non-toxic and susceptible to powdery mildew) and CNPAE-259 (toxic and resistant to powdery mildew) were studied. Accessions with undetectable levels of phorbol ester in the grains were considered as non-toxic. The agronomic variables (plant height, number of inflorescences, number of green and ripe fruits per plant) from each accession were measured biweekly during one year (August 2009 to July 2010), correlating them with climatic variables using the Pearson's correlation analysis. CNPAE-102 showed the highest growth rate (0.76 cm day-1), with 1.10 m increment in height and final height of 2.60 m. CNPAE-169 showed the lowest growth rate (0.63 cm day-1) with final mean height of 1.85 m. CNPAE-102 and CNPAE-259 showed early cycle and CNPAE-169, late cycle. The minimum temperature was the climatic variable that determined the most inflorescences.

Weed communities in agricultural systems are diverse and subjected to different agronomic practices. In this study, a phytosociological survey of the weed community in different cropping systems consisting of corn, horticulture, perennial cultivation of Jatropha curcas and pasture of Urochloa brizantha in Rio Verde, GO, Brazil, was carried out. Assessments were performed at the beginning (October 2011) and at the end (March 2012) of the rainy season. After identifying and counting species, were calculated the phytosociological indices of density, frequency, abundance and relative importance, as well as the diversity index of Shannon-Wiener, evenness index of Pielou and similarity coefficient of Sorense. Were found 46 species of sixteen families, especially Poaceae. The most important species were: Alternanthera tenella in the annual growth environment during the both periods; Panicum maximum (early rainy season) and Chamaescy hirta (end of the rainy season) in the vegetable garden; Eleusine indica (early rainy season) and Galinsoga parviflora (end of the rainy season) in the perennial crop and Sida rhombifolia (early rainy season) and Neonotonia wigrtii (end of the rainy season) in the pasture. Lower diversity indices and evenness were observed in the pasture environment. Sampling time presented a higher impact on similarities when compared to the different environments.

Intercropping cover plants with physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) may be a viable strategy for improving soil quality and sustaining the yield of this oilseed crop. However, one of the main challenges facing prolonged cropping of physic nut is the lack of information regarding the agronomic practices of the crop in intercropping systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cropping systems with cover plants and grain crops on the soil chemical properties and cumulative production of physic nut grain and oil. Eleven cropping systems and two evaluations were conducted in a split-plot arrangement on a dystrophic red latosol (Latossolo Vermelho Distr&oacute;fico) in the municipality of Dourados. Growing cover plants or grain crops between the rows of physic nut did not provide significant increases in the cumulative production of grain and of oil over growing physic nut alone. There was reduction in the availability of nutrients, especially P and K, through growing Campo Grande Stylosanthes, U. humidicola, and Crotalaria. However, the beneficial effects of intercropping related to maintaining soil cover and the possibility of increasing the profitability of cropping physic nut from the production of forage crops and grains should be considered. Although the results did not show a significant increase in physic nut production in intercropping systems, the approach still offers opportunities to improve agricultural sustainability, crop diversification, and long-term profitability.

The research focuses on the revealing of the long-term use of objects of Orthodox worship and preserving the old funeral ritual in the Eastern part of Livonia historical context. The modern level of source studies allows us to better understand the conditions for the inclusion of both Livs and Latgals of Tolova and Jersika in “German” Livonia, hidden behind theological formulas of Medieval jurisprudence. At the same time, situation at the level of common parishes is comparable to practices in other Orthodox lands conquered or annexed by the union in southern Europe, where the Roman Curia, under the conditions of taking the oath and submitting to the Pope, did not affect the Orthodox ritual, postponing all changes for the future. Thus, the historical background allows us to consider the archaeological realities of Eastern Latvia not as a reflection of stability of paganism and the dual faith of local population, but as evidence of the process of incorporation of Orthodox lands in Western Roman Catholic curch system.

There have been ethnoveterinary reports from around the world investigating plant usage in therapeutic protocols; however, there is no information regarding the ethnoveterinary practices in Brazilian Amazonia. The objective of this work was to register and document the ethnoveterinary knowledge of the inhabitants of the Island of Marajó, eastern Amazonia, Brazil. In the study, interviews were conducted with 50 individuals, with the application of semi-structured questionnaires that were quantitatively analyzed using descriptive statistic methods of frequency distribution. Use-value was calculated to determine the most important species. Samples of plants that were reported to have medicinal value were collected and identified by botanical classification. Fifty plants, distributed among 48 genera and 34 families, were indicated for 21 different medicinal uses. The family Asteraceae had the largest number of reported species; Carapa guianensis Aubl., Copaifera martii Hayne, Crescentia cujete L., Caesalpinia ferrea Mart., Chenopodium ambrosioides L., Jatropha curcas L. and Momordica charantia L. were species with highest use- value. The plant parts that were more commonly utilized for the preparation of ethnoveterinary medicines were the leaves (56%), bark (18%), roots (14%), seeds (14%) and fruit (8%). With regard to usage, tea was reported as a usage method by 56% of the informants; most preparations (90.9%) utilized only a single plant. In addition to medicinal plants, informants reported using products of animal and mineral origin. The present study contributed to the construction of an inventory of Marajó Island's ethnoveterinary plants, which might be the basis for future scientific validation studies.

Moringa oleifera Lam. (Moringa), Jatropha curcas L. (Jatropha), and Ricinus communis L. (Ricinus) are oily species known by their capability to grow in tropical and subtropical lands. However, there are no studies comparing their growth and recovery capabilities after root pruning and transplant. The purpose of this research was to compare and analyze propagation, growth, and recovery performance of these species after root pruning and transplant. We sowed 100 seeds per species and monitored their survival and growth during a 63-day period; after this, we uprooted the plants and pruned their roots 4.0 cm from their base and transplanted them. We monitored their recovery over 83 days, and then uprooted plants and measured above- and belowground data, digitized their roots in three dimensions, and calculated biomass fractions. With this information, we established allometric equations to estimate biomass fractions and root distribution models. Results indicated that Ricinus had the highest propagation capabilities. Jatropha and Ricinus had similar recovery after root pruning and transplant. Moringa had the lowest propagation and recovery from transplant. Concerning belowground data, root pruning increased root density more than three times in Moringa, four times in Ricinus, and six times in Jatropha. Nevertheless, the three species maintained natural root trays. Ricinus had the longest and thinnest roots and the highest number of branches, followed by Jatropha, and finally Moringa, with the smallest quantity and the shortest and thickest roots. We concluded that the three species recovered well from root pruning and transplant, with improved root structure upon applying these practices.

Auction is a sale process practiced by communities by offering goods or services for bid and selling them to the highest bidder. Normally, the auction is implemented openly, but there are some people who did it in secret in which the buyer or bidder will whisper alternately price offered to the seller and followed by the other bidders as what happened in the market mechanism in Kuala Muda Malaysia which called as Pasar Bisik. This paper aimed to examine the extent of compliance of the auction sale conducted by whisper to the Islamic law in terms of fulfillment of the principles and conditions of sale contract. The study found that selling auction by whisper is like an ordinary auction sale practice which made either bright light or in writing even in the online auction, ie when the rules and conditions can be fulfilled and independent of the main elements of which are prohibited; riba, gharar, najsy, curbun and maysir. Rather than that, Islam is very concerned and considering the good habit or practice among the society to make it as a rule based on Islamic legal maxims (al-cadat Muhakkamah) and (al-macruf curfan ka al-masyrut syartan).

Background Managing multimorbidity poses significant challenges for individuals, their families, and society due to issues with health information comprehension, communication with healthcare providers, and navigating the healthcare system. These challenges emphasise the critical need to prioritize individual and organisational health literacy. Multimorbidity is associated with a lack of social support for health; however, social networks and community dynamics can enhance health literacy. The “Co-designing municipal rehabilitation” (CURIA) project targets enhancing individual and organisational health literacy, and social networks for individuals with multimorbidity, with the overall aim of addressing health inequity through a collaborative local co-design process involving stakeholders. Methods The CURIA study employs a mixed-method approach that initially explores the health literacy experiences of individuals with multimorbidity participating in rehabilitation programs in selected Danish municipalities and the practices of professionals overseeing these programs. The subsequent co-design process will comprise individuals with multimorbidity, their relatives, municipalities, general practitioners, civil society, and knowledge institutions working together. This iterative and collaborative process involves tailoring and aligning health literacy needs with responsiveness within the context of local healthcare systems and developing supportive social networks. Discussion Given the increasing burden of multimorbidity, there is an urgent need to develop evidence-based practice for multimorbidity rehabilitation practices, developed in collaboration with municipalities and civil society. Emphasising self-care support for individuals, managing complex rehabilitation needs, and involving individuals in intervention prioritisation and customisation are crucial aspects addressed by CURIA to enhance health literacy and align municipal rehabilitation with identified needs.
