Il saggio analizza gli elementi di continuità e cambiamento nella narrativa di Ferrante alla luce delle riflessioni elaborate del Gender Criticism (Virginia Woolf, Adrienne Rich, Marianne Hirsch, Janice Raymond e altri) e delle teorie sullo sviluppo della personalità (Diamond).

Paragraphs 189-247, which attempt to refute the existence of time from the skeptical point of view, form the really polemical section of Sextus' confutation. Current interpretations of section 81of the Ise monogatari read it as a representation of the concept of miyabi (courtliness), defined as an ideal sphere of elegance divorced from worldly matters and political intrigues. Taking issue with nonpolitical views of the Ise Stories entailed in such readings, this paper shows how, through its narrative contextualization and the historical background evoked by its setting, the poem recited in this episode takes on political overtones. While on surface the story depicts an ideal sphere of disengagement from the political arena, the very form of unworldly refinement it centers on, the composition of waka, also functions as a vehicle of covert criticism of the Fujiwaras’ regime and a plea for virtuous government.

AbstractDuring the early years of the 20th century, attempts at dialogue with modern culture and practical collaboration with the Protestant majority in the Kaiserreich emerged in German Catholicism in order to overcome the condition of ‚inferiority‘ that characterized the Catholic population. In the context of the anti-modernist repression enacted by the Roman Curia of Pope Pius X, however, the proponents of forms of interdenominational organization, the autonomy of the laity from the ecclesiastical hierarchy, and openness towards secularized modernity more generally attracted the criticism of the so-called integralist Catholics. The latter saw a danger to the Catholic faith and to the prerogatives of the Roman Church in these developments and, ultimately, a manifestation of modernist ‚heresy‘. Among the targets of the integralist accusations were the Volksverein and the Centre Party, as well as the interdenominational Christian trade unions. The paper aims to shed light on the contents and characteristics of German Catholic integralism in the years following the encyclical Pascendi (1907): to this end, the specific case of the Cologne priest Andreas Müller (1862–1938) is examined; through dozens of letters addressed to the Nuncio of Munich and the Holy See itself, he denounced the (alleged) infiltration of Modernism in Germany.

In this paper I discuss Lorenzo Valla's criticism of the traditional Square of Opposition displayed in the second book of the Dialectica. I show that, according to Valla, the opposition rules of the propositions must take into account both common speeches and the correct use of Latin language, not the formal link occurring between the parts of propositions. In Valla's perspective, this theoretical change is carried out through rhetoric and philology, and it involves a reassessment of the arts of the trivium. As regards this topic, I argue that Valla aims niether to reduce dialectic to rhetoric nor to replace the former with the latter, but rather to establish some rhetorical principles as a better-suited way to set the opposition rules, because they take into account the linguistic context in which these rules apply.

Gramsci nel graphic novelLa critica letteraria gramsciana come forma di memoria in Cena con Gramsci di Elettra Stamboulis e Gianluca CostantiniIn seguito alla crisi del comunismo e al diffondersi del revisionismo storico dagli anni Novanta in poi, Gramsci è diventato in Italia una figura chiave nel dibattito sulla ‘memoria divisa’. L’avvio di tale dibattito in Italia, a sua volta, si è trovato a coincidere con quello sul New Italian Epic e con l’introduzione del graphic novel come forma letteraria che mette in discussione i limiti della letteratura tradizionalmente intesa. Nella presente ricerca si esplora la correlazione fra i tre fenomeni attraverso l’analisi della rappresentazione della critica letteraria gramsciana in Cena con Gramsci (2012). Nella prima parte si ipotizza che questo graphic novel scritto da Elettra Stamboulis e disegnato da Gianluca Costantini presenti un’allegoria metastorica in cui Gramsci stesso − prima oppresso dal fascismo e dopo dal revisionismo storico − è rappresentato come oggetto dell’egemonia culturale. Nella seconda parte si analizzano invece le strategie narrative attraverso cui Cena con Gramsci entra in dialogo con la critica letteraria gramsciana sull’interdipendenza fra contenuto e forma, proponendo il genere del graphic novel come forma in grado di rispondere alle dinamiche socio-politiche che interessano l’Italia contemporanea. Si conclude che, grazie alla riscrittura di questi concetti della teoria gramsciana, il graphic novel di Stamboulis e Costantini può essere considerato un atto di memoria metariflessiva che critica il revisionismo storico e, nello stesso tempo, crea uno spazio culturale per la commemorazione di una figura a lungo rimasta in ombra.

Vengono evidenziate le debolezze argomentative di questa posizione soprattutto nella prospettiva giuridica in cui l’istituto va opportunamente collocato. ---------- The essay begins from a view to a recent “consensus statement” prepared by a group of bioethicists, in prevalence Anglo-Saxon, in which the criticism to the conscientiuos objection is harsh and systematic. Argumentative weaknesses of this position are highlighted especially in the legal perspective in which the institution is appropriately placed.

- The ideological pattern of anti-Semitism sprung in the second half of the XIX century, and it moved against Liberalism and Democracy as its defining theoretical and political statement. From Toussenel to Drumont, up to Maurras and Hitler, the anti-Semitic theory revolves around the idea that liberal society leads to the end racial differences and fosters an historical process of homologation and cross-breeding epitomized by the Protocols of the Elders of Zion there is a recurrent theory that the Jewish rule will ultimately establish a One- Nation world, where national and racial differences are abolished. In such an apocalyptic view on history, the criticism of egualitarianism and cospiracy theory blend in a particular and theoretical synthesis.

Giuseppe Barettiʼs literary journal, La Frusta letteraria (1763-65), is a poetic piece of fiction about the contemporary world of literature in the 2nd part of the eighteenth century. Baretti performs in it his criticism on contemporary literature as well as on the conventional and common processes implicit in literary scene at that time, reflecting also on his own experiences and observations as a 'modernʼ and cosmopolitan author. To stage this he uses various literary models which were traditional or 'in vogueʼ at that time in Europe. A critical analysis also reveals the journal in whole to be a closed text constructed strictly according to literary principles, which establishes it as a cohesive piece of poetic art.

The most outstanding features of Gesualdo Bufalino's literary works are outlined in this dissertation. Bufalino, a Sicilian writer, made a name for himself in Italian literature in the early Eighties.
The first part of this thesis deals with the author's biographic background and existential experiences which ostensibly contributed the most to his shifting life onto the literary page. It ends with an analysis of Diceria dell'untore , the novel which made him famous.
The dissertation provides then an in-depth analysis of the various themes connected with memory, the centrepiece of this author's artistic universe, from which he ceaselessly carves out the contents of his writings. Memory makes up his prevailing narrative structure.
This feature draws him close to French writer Marcel Proust, whom Bufalino makes frequent reference to, but from whom he succeeded in taking an arm-length stand, since Bufalino elaborates and interprets reminiscing his own way. Carrying memory's materials over into fiction, a typical procedure of European literature from the previous century, is dealt with by Bufalino in a manner all of his own.
Components from the author's regional culture, interspersed in his literary works, have been singled out, making thus possible a comparison with other Sicilian authors.
Bufalino's literary experience may thus be seen as deeply rooted in Sicily, but at one and the same time it may also be seen as an interpretation of European literary trends in the twentieth century.

Il presente lavoro si propane di portare un contributo critico all'opera della Colombi, delineandone quegli aspetti salienti che caratterizzano la sua partecipazione alla scena letteraria come donna e come professionista. Le sue scelte poetiche, basate sull'ideale di un'intima, inscindibile unita donna-parola-lingua e sull'armoniosa corrispondenza vita-arte, contribuiscono ad acuire il confl itto con il repressivo e misogino ambiente ottocentesco. Si crea una continua tensione tra la tendenza all'adeguamento impasto dalla priorita di difendere la propria presenza e l'altrettanto forte spinta alla trasgressione come necessita di salvaguardare la coerenza a se stessa. L'ambivalenza vissuta verso il padre, depositario dell 'ordine sociale, si riflette, coerentemente con le premesse poetiche, nelle polemiche condotte nei confronti dei padri della letteratura. Se queste ultime tendono a rimanere contenute a livello metatestuale, in genera le, il genuino ed autentico messaggio letterario viene soprattutto espresso attraverso il gusto antifrastico dell'ironia ea livello metaforico e simbolico. La messa in luce della repressione e della morte dei valori femminili, la creativita intellettuale e fisica, che costituiscono la vera essenza dell'individuo e della stessa esistenza umana, va di pari passo con la maturazione di un sofferto compromesso con le dure leggi imposte dalla vita. Dalla crudelta di lavori alienanti alla brutale caduta degli ideali e dell'amore, si raggiunge, con le opere maggiori, un rinnovato equilibrio vita-arte che, nella sublimazione delle esperienze di morte, eleva l'espressione artistica a piano ultimo di salvezza e di realizzazione individuale. Nell'affermazione di un'arte firmata al femminile e posta al servizio della giustizia e della verita, si consuma cosi la disobbedienza nei confronti di ogni forma arbitraria di potere. Connotato al maschile, esso viene evidenziato nei suoi effetti deleteri ed alienanti anche nella connivenza e mancanza di una reale autenticita delle stesse donne, in particolare le madri. Dall'analisi dell'opera della Colombi emerge l'immagine di una scrittrice che si distingue non solo per la sua originalita e complessita, ma anche per l'indubbia modernita sia di stile che di problematiche
The aim of the present study is to offer a critical contribution on the writings of the Marchesa Colombi by tracing and developing those aspects of her work which best characterise her personality as a woman and as a writer. Her poetical choices, based on the ideal of an intimate, indivisible unity of woman-word-language and on the harmonious correlation between life and art, focus sharply on her conflict with the repressive and misogynist ambience of nineteenth-century Italy. Her works reveal a constant tension between the need to adapt in order to defend her own presence (as a writer) and the urge to transgress as a means to safeguard her inner, personal coherence. The author's ambivalence towards the father, depositary of the social order, is further reflected, in keeping with her poetical vision, in the polemical debates held with the fathers of Italian literature. Whereas these debates remain embedded within a metatextual discourse, the genuine and authentic message of her works is generally expressed on the metaphorical and symbolic levels and by an extensive antiphrastic use of irony. The need to stress the repression and death of feminine values, the intellectual and physical creativity which constitute the true essence of the individual, goes hand in hand with the artist's achievement of maturity as a painful compromise with the hard rules imposed by life. From the cruelty of a alienating labour to the brutal collapse of her ideals and of love, Colombi is able to achieve in her major works a new form of balance between life and art which, by sublimating the experience of death, elevates the artistic expression to the heights of personal salvation and of self-realization. By affirming her art as a product of the feminine mind at the service of justice and truth, she plays out her disobedience against all arbitrary forms of power. This study of the works of the Marchesa Colombi reveals the image of a writer who distinguishes herself not only for her originality and complexity but also for the marked modernity both in her style and in her choice of subject

The cultural and historical construction of African American identity in the United States has been closely tied to the dialectical relationship formed between sound and silence. This thesis examines the modernist and postmodernist representation of sound and silence in the African American novels Passing (1929), by Nella Larsen, and Jazz (1992), by Toni Morrison, as indicators of African American identity and racial oppression during the Harlem Renaissance. I analyze the soundscapes of both texts to expose the mobility of language, power, and space, especially as these soundscapes relate to the production of sound (both musical and non-musical) by African Americans, and the surveillance of these sounds by white audiences. Through my analysis of repetitive sound-images and embodied silence in Passing and Jazz, as well as textual representations of oral performance, I argue that there is harm in restricting African American voices to approved modes of audibility and/or limiting African American voices to one a singular narrative. This thesis introduces critics and theories from the disciplines of sound studies and African American studies, and applies the widely known theory of double consciousness, established by critic and author W.E.B. Du Bois, as the foundation for my literary and cultural analysis of sound in print.

The essay traces Bruno Trentin's political biography and intellectual research from a transnational perspective. Through the work notebooks (1953-1995), the diaries on the CGILGeneral Secretary (1988-1994), the activity in the European Parliament (1999-2004) and the following two years, the elaboration of The Freedom Comes First(2005) is rooted in a long term criticism against the subalternity of the communist and social-democratic culture to the Fordist model. It is also based on the necessity of a libertarian socialism, based on the centrality of the person and on the unavoidable link between work and knowledge. What stands outis the originality of Trentin's political thought, the intellectual circuit in which his research is developed and his vision of a federal Europe in the international system following the Cold War and the aftermath of September 11th, 2001.
