Although the issues of diversity and representation are often discussed within academic librarianship in Canada and the United States, the field has made little headway in being inclusive of the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) who work within it. If academic libraries are to become truly authentic and inclusive spaces where BIPOC are central not only to shaping the values of a library but also to determining how those values are accomplished, we must examine the traditional ways in which libraries function. One of these traditions is a reliance on bureaucracy and its associated practices such as structured group work and meetings, which are presumed to be inherently neutral and rational ways of working. Critical examinations of bureaucracy within higher education reveal how its overadoption is absurdly at odds with the social justice–oriented missions of most libraries. Furthermore, not all who are involved in libraries are equally harmed through this overreliance on bureaucracy; this article employs Critical Race Theory to uncover the insidious and specific deleterious impacts bureaucracies can have on BIPOC library workers. The antithesis of a neutral system, bureaucracy instead functions to force assimilation into a system entrenched in whiteness.

SUMMARYAims– To evaluate the quality of psychiatric care during the acute psychotic episode and the early post-acute period. Methods– Data concerning 24 indicators, drawn from NICE recommendations, were collected in 19 Departments of Mental Health, in the frame of the SIEP-DIRECT's Project to evaluate the implementation of NICE recommendations in Italian Mental Health Services. Results– The treatment of the acute episode in the Italian Mental Health Services is not based only on admissions in Psychiatric Ward in General Hospitals, but also on intensive home based care. The utilization of day hospital facilities for treating acute episodes is less frequent, as the presence of home based follow up after discharge. About of Departments of Mental Health did not have clinical guidelines concerning the pharmacological treatment in this area. However usually the standard practices followed NICE recommendations in terms of prescribed dosages, monitoring side effects and rationale for shifting to atypical antipsychotic drugs. Antipsychotic drugs, atypical or conventional, were frequently prescribed concurrently, while utilization of atypical antipsychotic drugs was increasing. Conclusions– The results show critical points concerning on one hand the scarce diffusion of clinical guidelines, on other hand the connection between standard practices, clinical guidelines and marketing of atypical antipsychotic drugs. It should be reinforced the role of the community and particularly at service level the capacity of community mental health teams to treat the acute patients.Declaration of Interest:none.

Soil salinization is a global problem that affects a large part of the world, especially arid and semi-arid regions. Hence, diagnosing soil salinity is the first step towards appropriate management. The current work aims to assess and map soil salinity in the eastern Nile Delta using principal component analysis (PCA). In order to develop appropriate solutions for rational management to mitigate the impacts of soil salinization and increase yield production 34 soil profiles were dug that covered the variation in the soils located at the northeast of the Nile delta. The spatial variation of soil parameters was mapped using ordinary kriging interpolation. The results of PCA illustrated that, among the studied soil properties, soil electrical conductivity (ECe), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), exchangeable sodium percent (ESP), and bulk density (BD), are the critical factors affecting management practices in the Nile Delta. Two spatial management zones (SMZ) were identified; SMZ 1 occupied 45.04% of the study area and SMZ2 occupied 54.96% of the study area. The average of soil pH, ECe, SAR, CEC, ESP and BD were 8.31, 20.32 dSm−1, 47.19, 32.9 cmolckg−1, 32.85% and 1.47 Mgm−3 for the first cluster (SMZ1), respectively. In addition, the second cluster (SMZ2) had average soil pH, ECe, SAR, CEC, ESP and BD of 7.75, 12.30 dSm−1, 26.6, 25.23 cmolckg−1, 26.6% and 1.27 Mgm−3. The results showed p-value < 0.05 which confirms that there is a significant statistical difference between the two zones. Finally, the results obtained could be used as a fundamental basis for improving agricultural management practices in such salt-affected soils.

SUMMARYAims– To evaluate the quality of psychiatric care in Italian community-based services and the discrepancy between real practices and NICE recommendations for the treatment of schizophrenia concerning the elements common to all phases of care and the first episode of psychosis. Methods– Data concerning 14 indicators on common aspects of care in all phases and 11 indicators concerning psychosis onset, drawn from NICE Recommendations, were collected in 19 Departments of Mental Health. Results– An optimistic attitude seems to prevail in the staff in all phases of care, while remarkable discrepancies between service practice and recommendations have been found in relation to systematic assessment, availability of informative leaflets and support to relatives. Concerning the treatment of first episode, a lack of specific services and differentiated activities, and paucity of practices based on specific guidelines has been detected. However, Italian community based services proved to have a good capacity to provide help quickly to those seeking help for a psychotic onset, to maintain regular contact with them in the subsequent year, and provide pharmacological treatment reasonably in line with the scientific evidence. Instead, little specific support is provided to the relatives. Conclusions– The results show critical points concerning capacity of assessment and treatment standardization, in all aspects of care and specifically in the treatment for the first episode. Differentiation of activities specifically dedicated to the patients at their first episode should be promoted as well as strategies to support relatives in a more specific way.Declaration of Interest:none.

Alkaline electrolytes represent a critical component of electrochemical energy devices, including alkaline electrolyzers, fuel cells, supercapacitors, and alkaline batteries. In addition, these electrolytes define essential properties of electrocatalytic reactions, such as the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, alkaline electrolyte concentrations and compositions are often considered trivial, resulting in misinterpretation of different phenomena and overestimating critical performance metrics. Thus, in an expanding field full of interdisciplinary research groups, there is an urgent need for standardized protocols designed to improve and evaluate the quality of alkaline electrolytes so that electrochemical energy systems can be objectively examined and compared. In this work, we propose a protocol composed of six steps to prepare, characterize and validate the quality of common alkaline electrolytes. By adapting well-established methods in the literature and validating additional features experimentally, we standardize six general practices: (1) proper alkaline electrolyte handling and preparation, (2) removal of Fe impurities, (3) alkali molarity standardization via pH titrations, (4) electrolyte composition analysis via inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), (5) statistical quality control assessment and (6) electrolyte validation through electrochemical aging of Ni electrodes in alkaline media. The effects of Fe incorporation for different alkaline electrolytes were examined using Ni and NiFe foam electrodes. Furthermore, ICP-MS measurements were complemented with prolonged cyclic voltammetry tests to confirm the effectiveness of the Fe purification procedure. We believe this work illustrates the importance of standardizing protocols and reporting reliable quality metrics to improve consistency and accuracy in electrochemistry. Furthermore, adopting the practices presented in this work would greatly benefit the evaluation and comparison of electrochemical energy materials and devices operating with alkaline electrolytes. Objective: This study was aimed to survey Aeromonas spp associated with cultured Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (O. niloticus) showing signs of motile Aeromonas septicemia (MAS) at different fish farms; molecular characterization and identification of test isolates; and to test the isolates for their antimicrobial and virulence activities that contribute to its pathogenesis. Design: Observational study Animals: 280 Nile tilapia Procedures: Clinically diseased 280 Nile tilapia, were collected from different localities at Kafr El-Sheik and Dakahlia governorates. The clinical picture and gross lesions were recorded. Aeromonas spp were isolated and presumptively identified using API20E. The identification was confirmed using PCR. Hemolysin (hylA), lipase, and aerolysin (aerA) virulence genes were detected among isolates obtained from different sampling sites. Besides, antimicrobial activity was reported for the identified A. hydrophila. Results: General septicemic signs were evident on Nile tilapia including, skin hemorrhages and ulcerations, bilateral exophthalmia, congested internal organs with significant mortalities. The prevalence of bacterial infection among naturally diseased Nile tilapia was 79.17, 70, and 58.33 in Kafr El-Sheikh, El- Manzala, and Gamsa fish farms, respectively. The most prevalent bacterial isolates were aeromonads (29.84 %), of all, 65.63 A. hydrophila, 18.75 A. caviae, and 15.63 A. sobria. All isolates were positively amplified using a species-specifying primer to determine A. hydrophila. Virulence genes detection revealed that five A. hydrophila isolates (83.3 %) harbored the aerA gene. Meanwhile, hylA and lipase genes positive isolates were lower reaching 16.7 % for both genes. A. hydrophila was highly sensitive to ciprofloxacin, amikacin, trimethoprim, and chloramphenicol, and MAR index of A. hydrophila isolates was ranged from 0.16-0.42 Conclusion and clinical relevance: Our findings demonstrate that Aeromonas spp are among the bacterial pathogens implicated in summer mortalities in tilapia fish farms in Egypt. Besides, determination of the prevalence, virulence genes, and antibiotic resistance pattern associated with the disease outbreaks is critical data that warrant the development of strategies to proper monitoring and farm management practices.

This research addresses the significant challenges in converting back cut skins of Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) into soft leather. The process is complicated by the skins’ inherent hardness and distinct texture. Sourced from the Arba Minch Crocodile Farm, these skins are aesthetically pleasing due to their unique scale patterns. However, they are often overlooked by leather manufacturers because of their rigidity and the complexities involved in processing. Our study proposes a critical modification in the pickling and chrome tanning process, specifically designed to improve fiber opening and separation. This method effectively transforms the durable back cut skins into flexible, soft leather, enhancing their applicability in various leather goods. Furthermore, the research encompasses an extensive evaluation of the raw materials, focusing on their fat and nitrogen composition. Advanced techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy analysis, along with visual examinations and physical tests, affirm the modified tanning process’s efficacy in producing soft leather from crocodile back cut skins. These findings underscore the potential of this refined approach not only to overcome processing challenges but also to expand the use of back cut skins in the leather industry. This research not only offers new opportunities for product diversification but also promotes sustainable practices at Ethiopian Nile Crocodile Farms, contributing to innovative and environmentally responsible leather production methods.

There were no significant changes in the features, focus of national interest and foreign policy behaving in the relationship between Ethiopia and Sudan. Since the independence of Sudan in 1956, the relations of them were characterized by cooperation and conflict or friendship and hostility. Bewildering issues such as disputes over their common border, Nile water, and practices of implicit and explicit interventions are persistent. This article employed qualitative approach and narrative research design to provide analytical pictures regarding the dynamisms of Ethio-Sudan relations in Post-2018. The post-2018 relationship of Ethiopia and Sudan has three distinct phases and features. These are the period of friendship, hostility and normalization. Following Tigray People Liberation Front’s ouster in Addis Ababa; there was a warm and blooming relationship between the two countries. This was the first phase and in which Sudan’s political forces recognized Ethiopia to mediate their domestic political divergences. In the second and third phases (from 2020 onward), confrontational and normalization were the respective features their relationships. During the second phase, the internal vulnerabilities of Ethiopia encouraged Sudan to enhance its pressures on Ethiopia`s government. Sudan exacerbated row over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, border disputes, as well as engaged in proxy conflict through anti–government groups. Sudan also put international pressures over Ethiopia including the declaration of the withdrawal of Ethiopia`s forces from Abyei Mission. The all-around pressures of Sudan on Ethiopia, the proactive-defensive diplomatic manoeuvring of Ethiopia and the involvement of the third bodies are the major points of the dynamism. Finally, the Nairobi Summit of 2022 was a watershed in the relationships of the two countries. Since this summit the intensified tension declined, and the normalization (third phase) process has started.

AimsThis comprehensive study seeks to evaluate the adherence of (CAMHS) service, Black Country Healthcare National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines in prescribing medications for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Our primary objectives include identifying variations in prescribing practices across different localities within the trust and identifying specific areas that may benefit from improvement.MethodsA meticulous retrospective analysis was conducted on 142 randomly selected cases involving children diagnosed with ASD and prescribed psychotropic or sleep medications. A comprehensive analysis of patient records, encompassing progress notes and clinic letters, facilitated the gathering of extensive data. The evaluation centred around benchmarking adherence to NICE guidelines. Throughout the process, strict adherence to ethical standards was maintained.ResultsWithin the cohort of 142 children diagnosed with ASD, 44% underwent alternative interventions before medication initiation. Notable variations were observed across localities, with 87% receiving psychological therapy as an alternative intervention. Documentation of consent for commencing medication was present in 62% of cases. Specialists consistently initiated psychotropic medications at the minimum effective dose, and 70% of cases had a follow-up within 3–4 weeks. Sleep medications were prescribed to 77% of the cohort, with 55.5% of those undergoing alternative interventions before prescription.ConclusionThe study's findings underscore significant variations in adherence to NICE guidelines, emphasizing the critical importance of exploring alternative treatment modalities before resorting to medication. Furthermore, collaboration with supporting agencies is highlighted as a crucial aspect of comprehensive care. The documentation of consent forms for all patients is deemed imperative, and adherence to specified intervals for reviewing medication side effects, as outlined in the guidelines, is considered crucial for optimal and safe patient care.

The volume studies, from different perspectives, the relationship between ancient thought and biopolitics, that is, theories, discourses, and practices in which the biological life of human populations becomes the focal point of political government. It thus continues and deepens the critical examination, in recent literature, of Michel Foucault’s claim concerning the essentially modern character of biopolitics. The nine contributions comprised in the volume explore and utilize the notions of biopolitics and biopower as conceptual tools for articulating the differences and continuities between antiquity and modernity and for narrating Western intellectual and political history in general. Without committing itself to any particular thesis or approach, the volume evaluates both the relevance of ancient thought for the concept and theory of biopolitics and the relevance of biopolitical theory and ideas for the study of ancient thought. The volume is divided into three main parts: part I studies instances of biopolitics in ancient thought; part II focuses on aspects of ancient thought that elude or transcend biopolitics; and part III discusses several modern interpretations of ancient thought from the point of view of biopolitics.

Dictionary definitions concur that “acculturation” means second-culture acquisition, but “acculturation” began as a Eurocentric concept that inferior peoples improve themselves by imitating superior peoples. Shadows of this persist despite the acceleration of acculturation research from nine studies per decade in the 1920s to the current rate of more than 6000 per decade. Reviews of this research have noted confused findings and lack of utility. Critics either (1) advocate for qualitative methods because culture, identity, and human experience are too complex for psychometric methods, or (2) recommend new models and new forms of quantitative analysis, or (3) fault research for poor social science practices. Rudmin (2006) has argued that academics’ shared liberal ideology causes collective confirmation bias that shapes research to promote advocacy of bicultural integration. Many future research designs and projects are proposed, including emic studies of rural-urban migration in China and the development of single-case measures of acculturative competence.

Abstract The book provides a compact theoretical account of the hidden functioning logic of the ideal of transparency. Transparency as a concept has become hugely popular in legal discourse and beyond. The book argues that there are underlying optical, conceptual, and social reasons why transparency makes sense to us: it promises immediate seeing and understanding. That is why it can form a powerful metaphor of controllability: in the state, for example, the governed are able to monitor the inner workings of the governor through transparency practices. The modern push for transparency is premised on the notion that the truth about governance is key to its legitimacy, and transparency can provide legitimacy through access to truth. The book argues that this premise is false. Instead of accessing legitimacy by providing truth, transparency is labelled by either or logic, which is referred to as ‘the truth-legitimacy trade-off’ in the book: transparency can provide either truth or legitimacy. Through this argument, the book questions the neutrality promise vested in transparency and claims that transparency is primarily a tool for creating appearances. The book consists of nine chapters divided into three parts: The Opacity of Transparency, The Promise of Transparency, and The Reality of Transparency. It combines legal and policy themes and research with interdisciplinary inputs, such as social philosophy and cultural and media studies, contributing to the growing literature on critical transparency studies.

The nine essays in The Appearing of God are situated on the fluid border of philosophy and theology, and follow a path leading from classic modern philosophical discussions of experience to some leading themes in contemporary phenomenology. After an introductory exploration of Kierkegaard’s classic text that straddles the border between philosophy and theology, the reader is introduced to Husserl’s account of perception, with its demonstration that the field of phenomena is wider than that of perceptible entities, allowing phenomena that give themselves primarily to feeling. Husserl’s theory of reduction is then subjected to a critique, which identifies phenomena wholly resistant to reduction. John Paul II’s encyclical on Faith and Reason elicits a critical rejection of its attempt to reify the boundary between natural and supernatural, the author asserting in its place that love is the distinguishing mark of the knowledge of God. This theme is continued in a discussion of Heidegger’s Being and Time, where a passing reference to Pascal invites interrogation of the work’s “methodological atheism,” which is found to leave more room than appears for love of the divine. The next three chapters deal with the themes of Anticipation, Gift, and Self-Identity, all exploring aspects of a single theme, the relation of present experience to the passage of time, and especially to the future. The final chapter, which is also the most personal, draws the main themes of the book together in asking how theology as an intellectual enterprise relates to the practice of worship.

AbstractThe sedimentation problem is a hot issue currently affecting the operations of reservoirs and irrigation networks in Sudan. Most of the rivers that cross Sudanese borders come from the Eastern African Plateau, which acts as a sediment source for the Nile River and its tributaries. Khashm el-Girba Dam (KEGD), which crosses the Atbara River in Eastern Sudan, is a multipurpose dam that was constructed in 1964. The Atbara River is a branch of the Nile River system, and the river carries a large amount of sediment during the flood period. Seven years after construction, in 1970, the dam faced a critical problem that could have led to a disaster; it was discovered that, due to sediment deposition, the water storage was not enough to satisfy the downstream requirements. This study discusses the sediment management practices used in KEGD and their impacts on maintaining the reservoir capacity. Practices including operation policy (OP), trap efficiency (TE), sluicing, sediment sluicing, and flushing operation (FO) were discussed. The adopted management practices succeeded in removing a considerable amount of silt and maintaining the lifetime of the reservoir.

AbstractA survey approach was applied to examine the technical characteristics of fish farming practice in Egypt and Nigeria. Critical issues such as floods and other vices were considered in bringing out the inference and level of aquaculture in both countries. Multistage sampling technique was used to select the study area and the number of respondents. Both primary and secondary data were used in the analysis. Eighty fish farmers were randomly selected from each of the country, making a total of 160 respondents. The socioeconomic characteristics revealed that aquaculture is an antique venture in Africa with Egypt taking the lead, i.e., 99% of the respondents practice in large-scales production of more than 11 Fadden/acre per, and 100% males depend mainly on agricultural drainage water for their earthen ponds. Ninety-eight percent cultured tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) which was believed to have originated from the Nile River. In terms of financial performance and partial economic analysis, tilapia production commands more sales in Egypt, while catfish (Clarias) production is seen as a promising venture in Nigeria. The fish farmers have various perceptions and reactions toward environmental changes factors such as cost of labor/manpower and inputs, poor water quality, and fish extension services, and climate change impedes aquaculture development in the countries. To achieve the scale of aquaculture expansion as observed in Asian and other developed part of the world, efforts should be geared toward continental and regional integration in order to encourage aquaculture practices in Nigeria and other parts of Africa. More so, government intervention and incentives should be paramount in Egypt to reduce the excessive exploitation of the private input suppliers.

AbstractA fundamental systems approach is essential to advancing our understanding of how to address critical challenges caused by the intersection of urbanization and climate change. The social–ecological–technological systems (SETS) conceptual framework brings forward a systems perspective that considers the reality of cities as complex systems and provides a baseline for developing a science of, and practice for, cities. Given the urgency of issues we collectively face to improve livability, justice, sustainability, and resilience in cities, bringing a systems approach to resilience planning and policymaking is critical, as is development of positive visions and scenarios that can provide more realistic and systemic solutions. We provide a vision for more resilient urban futures that learns from coproduced scenario development work in nine US and Latin American cities in the URExSRN. We find that developing an urban systems science that can provide actionable knowledge for decision-making is an emerging, and much needed, transdisciplinary research agenda. It will require true boundary-crossing to bring the knowledge, skills, tools, and ideas together in ways that can help achieve the normative goals and visions we have for our shared urban future.

This chapter draws a conceptual framework for the exploitation and domination practices in tour guiding. Despite the emphasized significance of their role in the tourism industry, tour guides have been reported to be the victims of unfair practices from the stakeholders. Therefore, an extensive literature review was carried out, and the author offered their insider perspective based on their nine-year tour guiding experience. The findings in the body of tour guiding literature were scrutinized, and conceptual discussions were offered to provide an insight into the ‘inside story' of tour guides. Eventually, some practical implications were noted, and the need to remediate the conditions of tour guides was confirmed due to their crucial role in the industry.

Teacher education programs are implementing more reflection into their coursework to better prepare future teachers to think critically in their classrooms. In this multiple-participant case study, the researchers analyze nine PSTs from two different teacher preparation programs. All PSTs participated in one-on-one or small group reading interventions with young children and conducted a series of assessments and intervention lessons over one semester. At the same time, the PSTs took a course focused on reading assessment and intervention. Through the course, PSTs reflected on their intervention practices, student growth, instructional strengths and weaknesses, and additional concerns that could arise during the sessions through the use of reflective writing assignments. Through learning about literacy assessments and conducting literacy interventions and tutoring, PSTs practiced and enhanced their critical thinking skills.

Abstract This chapter expands widely-used casting categories such as ‘colour blind’ and ‘colour-concept’ from four categories (as quoted in Thompson) to nine categories. It also addresses the rationale for removing ‘colour’ as the primary focus of casting decisions and provides new terminology that shifts away from ableist language (such as problematic usage of ‘blind’). The chapter puts forward terms such as ‘Nondeliberate Identity Casting’ as ‘Identity Conscious Casting’ instead. Citing diverse artists and casting scholars throughout, this chapter is the culmination of more than a decade of research and practice in the theatre. The chapter closes with a critical analysis of the factors that inform questions of dramaturgy, ethics, authenticity, and positionality in casting practices. The new and expanded vocabulary about casting is necessary for a wider conversation about staging and the aesthetic considerations and ethical practices of theatre-making.

Abstract Joseph of Thebes belongs to the group of early Christian ascetics known as the “Desert Fathers,” fourth- and fifth-century monastics who lived for the most part in the loosely organized lavra monasteries of Lower Egypt, the Nile Delta and its outlying oases.1 The literary remains of these ascetics consist primarily of aphorisms, or apophthegms, short, memorable sayings, passed down orally for several generations and finally compiled into a number of collections in the monasteries of Palestine.2 Joseph of Thebes is among the many ascetics included in the collection about whom no bio graphical information-reliable or otherwise-has been preserved.

In this chapter we discuss seven peculiarities about knowledge management practices at smallto medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). We draw our findings from a nine-month investigation of knowledge management practices at 25 SMEs. Managing knowledge is a critical capability for SMEs to master because it helps them leverage their most critical resource. Organizational knowledge is the most salient resource at the disposal of SMEs in terms of availability, access, and depth. Successful SMEs are those who can leverage their knowledge in an effective and efficient manner, so as to make up for deficiencies in traditional resources, like land, labor, and capital. In our research, we discovered that SMEs do not manage knowledge the same way as larger organizations do. Viewing SME knowledge management practices as scaled down versions of the practices found in larger organizations is incorrect. SMEs have understandable resource constraints, and hence have to be creative in working around these limitations in order to manage knowledge. Therefore, the goal of this chapter is to describe peculiarities in SME knowledge management practices, with the hope of enticing scholars and practitioners to follow-up with more detailed research undertakings.

Inspired by Brandi’s (1963) assertation that “Egypt is not a country; it is a river,” the Nile becomes the central character, driving both imagination and collaboration in architectural solutions. The NiLab research and design laboratory has been developed for the Egypt Pavilion at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition, the Venice Biennale. As the primary driver of imagination and working together in architecture, water represents the basic choices accompanying the entire journey presented in this volume through six Nile landscapes – Natura, Agro, Urbe, Infrastructure, Industry, and Archaeology. Along them, eighteen project intervention areas have been selected as the scene of an international encounter between Egypt, African populations, and the planet. Together with the Faculty of Engineering of the Ain-Shams University of Cairo (Egypt) and the dArTe Department of the Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria (Italy), 24 international Universities have been invited to build the NiLab, where students, teachers, and young researchers have engaged in concrete design practice to discuss the possible scenarios of a macro-theme: the Nile, an emblematic opportunity to reflect on the theme of water, representative of the planet Earth’s rivers, in the wider context of climate change. NiLab’s six landscapes are proposed as “mixture” spaces (Coccia, 2016) where to find overlapping and/or disappeared local cultures and interrupted or deconstructed identities. These places produce theoretical and practical questions and doubts, thus becoming fields of experimentation on the project’s ontology. It is a critical tool for the current state and, simultaneously, a territory of ideas for the future. Project is therefore engaged as research rather than as a solution to a practical question, aimed at understanding the meaning of the knowledge of the places, even at a theoretical level, the more philosophical boundaries of the topics covered, the relationship between disciplinarity, and the synthesis of knowledge. The NiLab eighteen projects represent research, but also experimentation with a different approach to the dynamics of rivers in different contexts. Thus, sustainability is declined with respect to an architectural and urban design imagination. Ultimately, NiLab offers a unique perspective, treating the Nile not just as a geographical entity but as a living force shaping landscapes, cultures, and the future of our planet.

A probabilistic analysis is an approach that allows to identify whether if preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance practices are efficient for keeping the overall system safety. The implementation of methodologies that evaluate the maintenance plans are a way to improve existing programs. Promigas S.A. E.S.P. is a company that must guarantee the reliability and availability of its natural gas transmission systems to its consumers. Therefore, since 2009, the company has implemented reliability centered maintenance practices to achieve it. However, considering the current scenario of the natural gas in Colombia and according to the growth plans of the company, it is necessary to guarantee that the reliability and availability indexes remain close to 100%. To achieve the aforementioned objective, it is necessary to diagnose the current maintenance plan. We propose a hybrid methodology combining functional and probabilistic analysis to assess the maintenance plan of a natural gas transmission system, specifically a turbo-compressor power pack. The proposed methodology includes a new priorization method to identify and select critical components and its critical failure modes, through a qualitative functional and quantitative characterization of the subsystems that conform the turbo-compressor power pack. The probabilistic analyses were simulated for five time periods: one, three, six, nine and thirteen years. The results allow to conclude in terms of availability that while the maintenance plan is optimal for the first-time period, from the second time period the preventive and predictive maintenance practices must be optimized increasing resources or modifying the equipment intervention frequencies.

There are a few critical issues is developing a stable, controlled, and effective quality improvement effort. Here we present these in a linear sequence, following the order of implementation. There are three cognitive areas and four practice areas. The former are: (1) the operational definition of quality is predictive of efforts, measures, success, and competitive blind spots. We present categories of definitions, and show how critical it is to get beyond the packaged mottos that come with training programs. (2) A total quality culture has distinctive attributes that are generally not found in traditional companies. Nine key differentiators are presented and discussed. After the culture gap is described, we offer an expedited approach to addressing the need for culture change. (3) Information can be processed using a variety of logics. Deming has long preached the need for greater statistical thinking. We present the three basic thinking approaches that management uses: rational, scientific, and pattern recognition, and explain the benefits, rewards, and costs of each.

The European Maritime Safety Agency uses a systematic approach to analyse safety investigations conducted through the European Marine Casualty Information Platform. In analysing the data of accidents reported over the last ten years, nine overarching safety issues have been identified, with "working methods" being a key concern. Two of the areas identified as problematic under this safety issue are bridge resource management coordination and external communication, which are critical areas as communication between bridge team members and ship-to-ship or ship-to-shore communication issues can lead to collisions and groundings. Language barriers, misunderstandings, and ambiguities may contribute to communication failures with pilots, tugboats, and VTS. Based on qualitative analysis of selected marine accidents, this paper presents the problem of poor communication between bridge team members, with pilots, shore services, and others. In response to the challenge of communication at sea, a current Erasmus+ project DigiMar, which deals specifically with maritime communication, is also presented. The project aims to improve communication skills and safety in shipping through a freely accessible digital teaching tool for routine communication at sea. Using open-access, research-based, and ICT-supported teaching tools, the project will focus on self-directed teaching using instructional videos and chatbots that address routine communication at sea. The learner-centred approach will simulate authentic professional situations and move from simple to complex scenarios. The project also aims to develop the digital skills of different target groups, including university teachers, and thus promote lifelong learning in higher education.

Open, decentralized, adaptive cyber-physical systems (ODA-CPSs) have countless novel structural attributes and functional affordances. Consequently, they pose many design and engineering challenges. This paper identifies and analyzes nine of them. They are: (i) handling aggregative complexity, (ii) establishing static and dynamic compositional synergy, (iii) managing dynamic and evolutionary operation in time, (iv) multi-abstraction-based modeling, (v) system integrity verification and behavior validation, (vi) achieving dynamic scalability towards meta-systems, (vii) transformation of big data, (viii) employing testable surrogate prototyping, and (ix) attaining robust social compliance. These challenges should be addressed already in the course of conceptualization and design of these systems. It is shown that a kind of duality is hiding practically in each of these challenges, which are caused by the concurrence of short term dynamic behavior and long term evolution of ODA-CPSs. Though interrelated, these two aspects still need to be handled separate. In order to response effectively to the above challenges, foundational research and operative research need to produce new transdisciplinary insights and new practical principles, respectively. First, previous efforts in these dimensions are critically evaluated. Then it is circumscribed what new knowledge is needed in order to cope with the considered major challenges. Putting everything together, the paper concludes that the grand challenge is in the lack of a dedicated transdisciplinary design theory that could explain how ODA-CPSs should be ideated and synthesized, and that would allow the development of a comprehensive design methodology and computational support tools. Future research will attempt to propose concrete solutions for the discussed challenges and most probably identify other emerging ones.

Abstract It has been over 40 years since the publication of an early paper titled 'Polymer Flooding, Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow' in the Journal of Petroleum Technology (Chang, 1978). Significant progress has been achieved since then, with successful commercial-scale applications in China (Daqing, Shengli, Xinjiang, Henan, and Bohai Bay offshore), Canada (Pelican Lake and Brintnell), India (Mangala), Oman (Marmul), the UK North Sea (Captain), and the USA (Yates, Vacuum, and Milne Point) since then. However, global polymer flooding (PF) production remains below expectations by the industry, particularly in the US (NPC, 1976 and 1984). The objective of this paper is to share our analyses and lessons learned to encourage more commercial-scale applications of PF worldwide. This paper reviews basic concepts, screening criteria, and mechanisms of polymer flooding and analyzes historical PF field activities from the early 1960s through 2023. It then presents reasons for the lower-than-forecast productions. Conventional wisdom holds that low crude oil prices are the roadblock to the commercialization of all chemical flooding. However, our analysis suggests that this is not the case, and there are other reasons for the lower-than-forecast results. Based on the progress made over the decades, we divide PF into three stages: the exploration stage from 1960 through 1980, the development stage from 1981 through 2000, and the commercialization stage from 2001 through 2023, including nine major commercial-scale polymer flooding projects worldwide. We analyzed key factors that impacted PF technology over the years, including the critical amount of polymer used, the impact of reservoir heterogeneity on-field performance, the issue of ineffective polymer recycling, the reversal of injection profile, injectivity and productivity problems, and difficulties in treating produced fluids. After these analyses, we propose a set of design criteria, including reservoir evaluation, polymer selection and slug design, laboratory and simulation studies, pre-commercial field tests, and surveillance/monitoring programs to ensure commercial success. We suggest areas for improvement in future operations, such as enhanced PF combined with other technologies. Future applications of polymer flooding in high-temperature and high-salinity, heavy oil, and carbonate reservoirs are also discussed.

From practical point of view, Refrigerants and refrigerant mixtures are widely used as working fluids in many industrial applications, such as refrigerators, heat pumps, and power plants the present work is devoted to evaluating seven cubic equations of state (EOS) in predicting gas and liquid phase volumetric properties of nine ozone-safe refrigerants both in super and sub-critical regions. The evaluations, in sub-critical region, show that TWU and PR EOS are capable of predicting PVT properties of refrigerants R32 within 2%, R22, R134a, R152a and R143a within 1% and R123, R124, R125, and TWU and PR EOS’s, from literature data are 0.5% for R22, R32, R152a, R143a, and R125, 1% for R123, R134a, and R141b, and 2% for R124. Moreover, SRK EOS predicts PVT properties of R22, R125, and R123 to within aforementioned errors. The remaining EOS’s predicts volumetric properties of this class of fluids with higher errors than those above mentioned which are at most 8%.In general, the results are in favor of the preference of TWU and PR EOS over other remaining EOS’s in predicting densities of all mentioned refrigerants in both super and sub critical regions. Typically, this refrigerant is known to offer advantages such as ozone depleting potential equal to zero, Global warming potential equal to 140, and no toxic.

ABSTRACT The multi-stage hydraulic fracturing and horizontal well have become the most important technologies in extracting oil and gas from unconventional reservoirs. However, the stress shadow effect often hinders the simultaneous growth of multiple fractures when design parameters such as fracture spacing and injection parameters are not set properly. Therefore, one of the key issues in a fracturing treatment is the determination of the fracture spacing within a fracturing stage under different combinations of geomechanical and injection parameters. This paper presents a numerical study by using the in-house code, DeepFrac, a fully coupled hydraulic fracturing simulator based on the dual boundary element method and finite volume method. The evolution of the optimal fracture spacing with the geomechanical and injection parameters is investigated. The results demonstrate the dependence of the optimal fracture spacing on the energy dissipation and in-situ stress contrast. A dimensional analysis is carried out, and two dimensionless groups are determined including the dimensionless toughness and dimensionless in-situ stress difference. A critical fracturing spacing is proposed based on the dimensionless groups, which can capture the combined role of different parameters in the fracture growth. The effectiveness of the proposed critical fracturing spacing determination criterion is verified by a few additional numerical experiments. INTRODUCTION The growth of multiple parallel hydraulic fractures (HFs) subjected to a single fluid source is commonly seen in various geological scenarios, such as dike swarms driven by magma supplied by mantle plume and artificial fractures created by fluid injection in the extraction of hydrocarbons. In order to promote the productivity of gas and oil, the hydraulic fracturing treatment is often designed in such a way that simultaneous growth of multiple fractures in each stage can be achieved (Nie et al. 2022). Although such multistage technique has effectively enabled cost savings, field practices have shown that a large portion of perforation clusters failed to initiate or contribute to production according to production logs in Miller et al. (2011). The reasons behind such phenomenon include nonuniformity of rock properties, in-situ stress, stress shadow effect, etc. The stress shadow effect refers to the suppression of some fractures exerted by the neighboring HFs (Peirce and Bunger 2015), which can lead to preferential growth of some HFs and eventually results in a nonuniform fracture pattern.

Drought indicator systems help decision-makers to understand how and where the drought occurred and to take measures from the Drought Management Plans. The main goal in the Water Framework Directive (WFD) is the achievement good ecological status, but the Article 4.6 allows temporary deterioration of the status, occurred as a result of so called prolonged drought. Reduction of natural water resources such as rivers, lakes, aquifers, is associated with the reduction in available water resources for water supply, environment, etc. (so called socio economic drought). The severity of the prolonged drought is related to its duration, specificities of the river basin, reservoir management and impacts. The research is related to the system of drought indicators developed in NIMH (http://hydro.bg: Standardized Runoff Index, SRI; Standardized Precipitation Index, SPI; Soil Moisture Index, SMI) and its improvement at River Basin level. A new approach for integrated analysis of the indices of the NIMH system, the indicators used by the Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW) - inflow and levels of reservoirs, groundwater, etc., has been developed. Thus, from the first months, the so-called hot spots and critical areas are identified - reservoirs, watersheds and river basins for which drought indicators identify drought and/or whose regulatory capabilities have declining potential and are at risk in the event of prolonged drought. Emphasis is placed on those hot spots where the precipitation deficit takes place in the reservoir watersheds. A system of criteria and drought indicators to identify prolonged droughts have been experimentally applied. A joint analysis of the SRI, SPI, SMI maps (http://hydro.bg), the developed maps for inflow and volume of complex and significant reservoirs from Annex 1 of the Water Act, etc., was performed. For assessment of the indicators for the reservoir inflow a scale of inflow used by the MoEW is proposed. For the indicator available volume, experiments with the Percent from reservoir capacity, Standardized Status Index, etc., were conducted. Drought periods in Bulgaria are analyzed, especially prolonged drought 2019 2020. The approach supports the operational application of the NIMH drought indicator system in the practice of the MoEW and the Drought Management Plans realization.

Enbridge Pipelines Inc. operates one of the longest and most complex pipeline systems in the world. As such, thorough, system-wide understanding of defect behavior is a critical aspect of Enbridge’s Integrity Management Program (IMP). To enhance understanding of corrosion behavior, and aid in determination of in-line inspection revalidation intervals, a quantitative corrosion defect assessment approach has been developed and implemented for the Enbridge system. To date nine trap-to-trap pipeline sections have been completed using this approach. Utilizing defect data from consecutive high-resolution corrosion in-line inspection tool runs in correlation with pipe attribute information and environmental characteristics, a statistical approach has been developed to determine the distribution of the corrosion growth rates along these nine sections of pipeline. Validation was achieved through comparison with other corrosion growth rate assessment methods. This comparison was also used to develop refinements to the approach. The approach provided an upper-bound estimate of corrosion growth and was considered appropriate for system-wide application where other defect-by-defect comparison methods can be time, labour, and cost intensive. Use of this upper-bound estimate of corrosion growth in combination with field metrics, operational history of the pipeline, defect trending and, where available, additional sources of corrosion growth rate determination have provided the operator with an effective, practical, and defensible tool set for determining subsequent in-line inspection reassessment intervals across the pipeline system. Data integration inherent in the process has also provided valuable insight regarding corrosion growth rate drivers as affected by pipeline and environmental factors. While focusing on trap-to-trap sections of the Enbridge system that have been inspected with multiple high-resolution in-line inspection tools, this paper/presentation will also discuss a statistical corrosion growth rate approach for trap-to-trap sections with only one high-resolution in-line inspection run.

The onset of new, more accessible, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies marks a significant turning point for libraries, ushering in a period rich with both unparalleled opportunities and complex challenges. In this era of swift technological transformation, libraries stand at a critical intersection. To effectively chart this transition, two quick polls were conducted among members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). The first poll, which ran in April 2023, provided an initial snapshot of the AI landscape in libraries. The second poll, carried out in December 2023, continued this inquiry, offering a comparative perspective on the evolving dynamics of AI use and possibilities in library services. This study analyzes and juxtaposes the outcomes of these two surveys to better understand how library leaders are managing the complexities of integrating AI into their operations and services. It specifically seeks to capture changing perspectives on the potential impact of AI, assess the extent of AI exploration and implementation within libraries, and identify AI applications relevant to the current library environment. The insights derived from this comparative analysis shed light on the role of libraries in an increasingly AI-driven era, providing strategic directions and highlighting practices in research libraries.

Purpose/Background Central venous catheters (CVC) are typical for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Due to the invasiveness of this procedure, there is a high risk for central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI). These infections have been known to increase mortality and morbidity, medical costs, and reduce hospital reimbursements. Evidenced-based interventions were grouped to assemble a central line bundle to decrease the number of CLABSIs and improve patient outcomes. This scoping review will evaluate the literature and examine the association between reduced CLABSI rates and central line bundle care implementation or current use. Methods A literature review was completed of nine critically appraised articles from the years 2010-2021. The association of the use of central line bundles and CLABSI rates was examined. These relationships were investigated to determine if the adherence to a central line bundle directly reduced the number of CLABSI rates in critically ill adult patients. A summary evaluation table was composed to determine the associations related to the implementation or current central line bundle care use. Results Of the study sample (N=9), all but one demonstrated a significant decrease in CLABSI rates when a central line bundle was in place. A trend towards reducing CLABSI was noted in the remaining article, a randomized controlled study, but the results were not significantly different. In all the other studies, a meta-analysis, randomized controlled trial, control trial, cohort or case-control studies, and quality improvement project, there was a significant improvement in CLABSI rates when utilizing a central line bundle. The extensive use of different levels of evidence provided an excellent synopsis that implementing a central line bundle care would directly affect decreasing CLABSI rates. Implications for Nursing Practice Results provided in this scoping review afforded the authors a diverse level of evidence that using a central line bundle has a direct outcome on reducing CLABSI rates. This practice can be implemented within the hospital setting as suggested by the literature review to prevent or reduce CLABSI rates. Implementing a standard central line bundle care hospital-wide helps avoid this hospital-acquired infection.
