AbstractMany crafts in premodern Europe depended on migratory journeymen. Little is known about these workers, or how craft guilds and urban authorities affected their movement. By employing novel data on thousands of journeymen from different crafts and cities in Holland, we provide the first systematic overview of journeymen migration and settlement patterns in The Dutch Republic. We find that migration and settlement patterns differed significantly by occupational sector, marital status, and skill level. The stance of urban authorities towards migrants significantly affected settlement patterns as well. This interrelation of group-level characteristics, craft guilds, and urban regulation demonstrates the significance of examining these elements in tandem.

With the development of the times, more and more people are willing to go to museums to feel the charm of historical precipitation compared with entertainment places. Museums have also adopted various ways to publicize, such as cultural souvenirs. Cultural relics break the stereotype that can be seen from afar but not obscene, and integrate with the vitality of contemporary life, and are accepted by the young group. On the contrary to the “hot” of the museums is the “cold” of traditional arts and crafts. The change of social aesthetic tendency makes traditional arts and crafts face a severe test. How to promote the inheritance of traditional arts and crafts has become an issue that cannot be ignored. In view of the problem of the combination of traditional craft innovation and development are discussed, so that the traditional craft will continue to shine in the new era.

DEWI, A. P., ARIYANTI N. S. & WALUJO, E. B. 2016. Diversity of plants used for plaited crafts by the Dayak Iban-Désa in Kabupaten Sintang, Kalimantan Barat. Reinwardtia 15(2): 67 – 79. — Many plants are used for making plaited crafts such as basketry and woven mats by the Dayak Iban-Désa, a sub-tribe of the Dayak in Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia. The Dayak Iban-Désa gather the craft materials mostly from the plants in the forest. However, the habitats of these plants are being threatened by deforestation. The diversity of plants used for crafts is here documented. This study recorded the scientific names of plant species used for the craft plaiting, and observed abundance of plants used for craft. Information about the plants used were gathered using non-structural interview and focus group discussion (FGD) with the informants and participants. The abundance of plaited plants was observed in 46 plots of 10 × 10 m2 plots by participative ecological method. Nineteen plants species were used as plaited material, belonging to four families: Arecaceae, Poaceae, Pandanaceae and Zingiberaceae. Two species of rattan (Calamus sp. and Plectocomiopsis wrayi Becc.) have the highest Index Cultural Significance (ICS) value. Those species were considered as the most valuable plant materials because of the quality of fiber, intensity on harvesting, and the resulting quality of plaited craft products. However, the demand for high quality products is not always supported by the availability of plant materials in the forest. Therefore, the cultural significance of plants (the ICS values) and their availability should be considered when determining the conservation strategy for each of these species.

In Handwerksbetrieben finden solche Konzepte bislang wenig Anwendung. The skilled crafts sector is an important part of the German economy. The digital transformation confronts many craft businesses with new opportunities and numerous challenges. One way to counter the complex effects of the digital transformation is business model innovation. In industrial companies and the startup scene, methods for business model innovation, such as Gassmann’s Business Model Navigator, are well established. In craft businesses, such concepts have so far found little application. This observation motivated the exploratory study presented here. The study aims at determining whether existing methods are suitable for skilled crafts and, if needed, how relevant adaptations should be made. The goal is to develop a target-group-oriented toolbox of methods for craft businesses.

The current study is to explore the effects of art therapy that conjugate metal craft on depression and stress relief. According to mental health survey reported by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (2021), one out of every four adults go through events that disturb their psychological wellbeing at least once at some point in their life. Stress and depression can be triggered when we run into unpleasant situations such as interpersonal conflicts, job unsatisfactory and salary issues while we go through our daily businesses. According to the study, if these triggered stress and possible signs of depression are left unattended and unsettled, it could lead to decline in enthusiasm and reduced confidence and even lead to some extreme cases involving serious mental diseases. From April to July of 2022, six trainees from J studio located in city A were selected and set up as a group, from which 6 teams of study subjects were selected for the study. Prior to the study, all participants were asked to complete surveys for depression and stress, which were used for further analysis. The program was divided into three phases: metal craft fundamentals; crafting rings and necklaces; and jewelry setting. The participants were cross-examined during each phase for any changes in their thoughts or behaviors while being exposed to depression and stress. During their metal craft program, participants went through repeated process such as filing and sanding and obtained psychological stability; and using crafted products such as finished jewelry to arouse interests to study its positive effects on stress and depression. The study holds significance as it explores ways to enable art therapy utilizing crafts and study the need for therapy with crafting techniques.

The Riau Islands region is one of the archipelago areas in Indonesia where most of the people depend on marine products, one of which is shellfish, which have various colors and beauty. In various regions, people have Using seashells to improve the quality of life. Shells can be used as building materials, collections, clothing, furniture decoration, and as souvenirs, both for functional purposes and interior decoration. The use of goods that are not economical but can produce high economic value is currently attracting the attention of craft market players. If made into crafts or souvenirs, seashells, which are a product of marine waste, can be very valuable. Various types of crafts are developing in today's society, one of which is crafts that use resin as the main material. The manufacturing process with this composite material can be carried out easily by all groups. This composite manufacturing training was given to the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) group in the Cipta Garden housing complex which is approximately 10 km from the ITEBA campus. This group actively gathers every month, but no productive activities are carried out. In principle, this activity provides knowledge and skills for this PKK group to be productive by producing various types of crafts with high selling value. So it is hoped that later it can become an idea for entrepreneurship

Despite an immensely rich craft legacy that stretches back more than 7,000 years, Pakistan is losing many of its precious craft traditions to the modern world. As an artist, designer and educator, Noorjehan Bilgrami has spent the best part of five decades working with craftsmen in an effort to document, revive and sustain these traditions. The journey that began with a chance visit to an old block-printing workshop in her home town Karachi in the 1970s has since taken many turns. This article is a personal reflection of her experiences, including building local and international markets for Pakistani crafts, teaming up with a group of visionaries to establish one of Pakistan’s leading art and architecture schools and her interventions in public spaces. Her reflections provide an insight into the challenges and opportunities of championing Pakistan’s craft traditions and the urgent need to support them on a national scale.

Desmarais, Sarah. "Affective materials : a processual, relational, and material ethnography of creative making in community and primary care groups". Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2016. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/12308/.

Resumo:
This research concerns neglected affective, relational, material, and processual dimensions of amateur crafts practice in an arts-for-health context. Existing studies on the social impacts of the participatory arts are prone to blur the borders between advocacy and research, and are vulnerable to accusations of ‘policy-based evidence making’ (Belfiore and Bennett, 2007, p.138). Researchers have relied predominantly on interview material and surveys, and there is a lack of finegrained, long-term, ethnographic work based on participant observation. The distinctive potentials of making in this context, furthermore, have barely been investigated. This thesis addresses these deficits through a sustained ethnographic study of two wellbeing-oriented crafts groups supported by Arts for Health Cornwall (AFHC). One group was based in the community, the other in primary care. Observation produces novel understandings of the potential benefits of crafting for health as emergent properties of particular locations, relationships, and practices organized in distinctive ways around creative making. Firstly, as a counterweight to normative views of amateur crafts creativity as soothing and distracting, this study highlights a range of transformative affects including frustration, creative ambition, and enchantment. Secondly, countering an atomistic, stable depiction of such affects, this study describes them as fluid aspects of making processes. Thirdly, these unfolding processes are seen to be inseparable from the intersubjective (peer-to-peer and participant-facilitator) dimensions of creative groups. Lastly, this in vivo perspective problematizes a view of materials as an inert substratum upon which makers exercise their creative powers, and highlights the relevance of a ‘vital materialism’ (Bennett, 2010) for understanding the potential benefits of manual creativity. Sustained observation also produces a situated, spatial account of the extended networks of community belonging produced by the activities of such groups. Fieldwork is contextualized within a wider field using interviews with nine UK arts for health organizations. Consideration is also given to the influence of contemporary discourses of wellbeing, agency, and creativity on policy making in the area of arts for health. Findings have implications for good practice in the field, and for further research to inform political leadership concerning the role of the arts in health. These implications are drawn out in relation to the potential future contribution of the arts within a UK health economy undergoing rapid, crisis-driven transformation.

The aim of this study was to describe the meaning of activity amongst women participating in a craft group in South Africa. A qualitative method was used to answer the aim of the study. Ten African women who live in townships outside Pretoria have been interviewed. The interviews were conducted with support by an interview guide containing semi-structured questions. All collected data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed with a qualitative content analysis, which resulted in two main categories each containing two sub-categories; 1) “Internal Values” containing “Taking part in a social activity” and “Gaining self – esteem through activity”, and 2) “External Values” containing “productivity” and “leisure”. The categories within the Internal values contain descriptions from the participants that concern the meaning inside the person when participating in craft activities. The categories within External values contain descriptions that concern factors outside the person that have a meaning to the participants. This study showed that craft was of great importance for the participants in different areas, such as social network and personal development. The meaning of craft in Occupational Therapy needs to be further investigated and it would be interesting to conduct a similar study in Sweden.

French research in sociology seems to have detached itself from artisanship as a field of study in spite of a recent regain of interest in it. As a polymorphous object, artisanship still remains subject to doubt as far as its definition and sustainability are concerned. To characterise it, we based our work on employment statistics produced within the consular network in Rhône-Alpes and entrepreneurship data that we processed. Together with qualitative material collected in butcheries and mechanic businesses through observations and interviews conducted in France and Morocco. We spent three years of full-time work within the Regional Chamber of Trades and Crafts with a research funding (CIFRE 2007-2010) to carry out this study. This thesis reveals the craft business as an incubator of skills which are embedded in an ad hoc work division based on routines and creativity which are an updated response to production and market situations. Adding up to this efficiency, the locally rooted relational dimension leads to organizational and market performance. This dimension appears in the artisans offers, their customers capture strategies and the competitive relationships between peers. This thesis also aims at studying the Rhône-Alpes artisanship as a social category. The main finding here is that artisanship cohesion and its elasticity reveal an open and dynamic occupational market built on the labor market and on a constellation of occupational groups that gather independent-craftsmen as their core and a mobile population that revolves around sharing the same qualifications and experience

The aim of this study was to determine entrepreneurial team formation criteria in the craft sector in South Africa, aimed at creating employment opportunities for the marginalized unemployed in the informal economy through linkages to the formal economy. A quantitative research approach was used in a descriptive research design, based on social network characteristics, as determined from the literature review, to identify team member absorption criteria to an entrepreneurial crafter group. The unit of analysis was existing crafter groups in Ekurhuleni. A questionnaire was used to gather the data in face-to-face interviews. Frequency tables, cross tabulations and Chi-square analysis were undertaken to determine the highest responses across all the variables. The outcome of the analysis indicated that new team members were selected to a team based on strong tie connections and Small World Networks. The majority of team members indicated that they would not have been selected to the group if the team leader did not trust them, indicating the importance of trust in the selection criteria. The financial position of the majority of team members had not improved as a result of membership to a crafter group. The critical role of weak ties, to link crafter groups to the formal sector, became evident to ensure sustainability of the crafter groups.

This study expects to analyze the beauty of Atayal weaving craft through the perception of esthetics, and then establish a further discussion on the current situation and development of local weaving industry. Based on the categorization of traditional clothes, Takekan Group, a branch of Atayal mainly in Fuxing Township in Tao-Yuan County is specified. The development of Atayal weaving industry has declined since Japanese colonization, yet grown appreciated and had been noticed internationally after the rise of indigenous movement and group identity. Afterwards, there have been more chances for this cultural and creative industry. The research result shows that the art form, contents and esthetics of this industry are closely connected to its relationship with the society. With globalization, the importance and value of group culture increased. Instead of gaining social economic benefits, reaching mutual consensus and group energy is the fundamental purpose and significance of passing down this tradition. This industry seems to be prosperous yet in fact encounters problems within the process, involving the influence of social economics, indetermination of market segregation, obstacle in marketing channels, choosing proper materials, having customer insight, difficulty of producing products, cultivation and inheritance. Hence, this study aims to look at the present situation of Atayal weaving industry from external cultural phenomenon to internal group esthetics and energy, trying to provide an explanation and analysis for Takekan Group’s esthetic system. Key Word: Atayal, Takekan Group, Weaving Craft, Esthetic Experience Note 1: The source of categorization for clothes is from the book series of Representing Atayal published in 2008, edited by National Museum of Prehistory. The presented traditional clothes were made and produced by Yuma Dalu.

Indicators with carboxylic group have been synthesized via Friedel-Crafts reaction. Nanoporous materials tethering carboxylic indicators were prepared via direct-synthesis and co-condensation. Nanoporous materials with carboxylic indicators were carefully characterized by elemental analyses, inductively coupled plasma actomic emission spectrometer, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherm, fouier transform infrared, ultraviolet and visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy. There are three kinds of bonded indicators were chosen and studied because of their unique properties. F-indicator emits green fluorescence, C-indicator emits green fluorescence and G-indicator adsorbs selectively heavy metals. Their characteristic fluorescence intensity variation and color transformation with various pH values in solution were monitored by photography, UV-VIS spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy. Nanoporous materials with indicators can fast respond with the acidity and basicity of solution because of their excellent hydrophilicities, porosities and surface areas. Moreover, these materials can be used as pH sensors by recycling and reduce the pollution of the environment, which improve disadvantages of traditional indicators.

There has been considerable debate in the gender and development literature on income earning opportunities and their empowerment potential for women, particularly rural women, in developing countries. In this, a critical question for the empowerment of women is, does access to resources, for example, enterprise income, translate into power and its various manifestations for women within their households? This study argues that access to resources alone is not a sufficient prerequisite for empowerment. Improved access to resources will only transform into empowerment outcomes if women are able to exercise their agency to achieve desired outcomes. The study, therefore, highlights the centrality of agency in the empowerment process. Agency acts as a link between resources on the one hand and empowerment outcomes on the other. Furthermore, the relationship between agency and empowerment is dialectical as the two concepts under investigation are constitutive of each other. Put differently, enhanced agency results in empowerment, which in turn feeds back to increased agency, leading to further empowerment. Hence, empowerment is presented as both an outcome of the exercise of agency and a driver of agency. The study frames the question of agency and empowerment within feminist theory of agency - Western, African and South African. Using a case study of the Ikhowe Craft Group in rural Eshowe, the study examines the role of agency in the empowerment process for rural women crafters in two ways. Firstly, through the feminist political ecology approach, it evaluates their ability to access the natural resource, Cyperus spp. for use in craft making. Secondly, it examines their individual agency within their households and their collective agency in the Craft Group. Within the overarching feminist research paradigm, a mixed methods research methodology was used, which entailed embedding quantitative data collection and presentation within qualitative research techniques. The empirical evidence suggests that the women crafters’ agency was enacted and empowerment achieved within a context of enablement and constraints, with gender culture and traditional leadership emerging as significant variables that mediate the rural women’s agency within their households and in accessing the raw material for their craft. Gender and culture intersect to influence how the women construct their identities, roles and responsibilities within their households. Despite the constraints of social structure, the women emerge as important agents of social change in their households. In addition, the study has revealed the private sphere to be a significant site of both the women crafters’ agency and subordination. Hence, any conceptualization of women’s agency and empowerment, particularly that of rural women, needs to be context-specific to be able to adequately capture the realities of the women that impinge on their ability to act.

INFORUM is a research project started more than forty five years ago by Clopper Almon. The focus is on the development of dynamic, interindustry, macroeconometric models to forecast the economy in the long run. Over the last 30 years, the Inforum approach to model building has been shared by economists in many different countries. Researchers have focused much of their efforts to developing a linked system of international interindustry models with a consistent methodology. A world-wide network of research associates use similar methods and a common software obtaining comparable results to produce studies of common interest to the group. Inforum partners have shared their research in an annual conference since 1993. The XXII Inforum World Conference was held in Alexandria, Virginia in September 2014 and this book contains a selection of papers presented during the sessions. All these contributions share an empirical and pragmatic orientation that is very useful for policymakers, business, and applied economists. Some papers are devoted to specific topics (productivity, energy, international trade, demographic changes) and some others are oriented to model building and simulations.

AbstractIn this chapter, we describe Collaborative Story Craft (CSC) as a tool for building narratives during organisational change. The chapter is divided into four parts: externalisation of stories, mirror materials, a workshop, and report. The workshop is structured around metaphoric fields to engage the practitioners. These fields are “Nurturing the Roots,” “Occupational Well-being as a holisticstory,” and “Metaphorical Tourism.” The metaphoric fields can be introduced on the same workshop day or spread over separate occasions, depending on the time and the size of the group.

This chapter examines an ethnographic study of a women's lacemaking network in Poland. It confirms the value of craft work as both a creative and social activity and as contributing to the participants' resilience. Older people choosing to practise arts and crafts resulted in enhanced personal expression and self-esteem. Indeed, lace making as part of a group strengthened social connectivity, increased confidence, and improved the group's perception of their social status. Moreover, sharing stories while making craft allows for memories and experiences of the past to be intertwined and simultaneously performed in the present. This project led towards reflection upon the ways in which craft making can be combined with oral history, constructing the space for formulation of new discourses of ageing. Regional identities, enriched by the history of objects, practices, and places, allow people to locate themselves in the context of narratives about craft making.

I came to Penland to write. The craft s were dear to me; first textiles, especially bobbin lace, which my wife made and collected, and taught me to look at. Then the Japanese ceramics to which Kenichi Fukui and Fred Baekeland introduced me. Followed by the protochemistry of dyeing with indigo from snail and plant sources, to me still the ideal bridge between science and culture. The tribute is to be seen around my house—my children’s inheritance consumed as much by crafts as “high” art. So it was easy to accept an invitation to come to Penland and write. Who knew what would come—I wanted to write poems, perhaps an essay. For the poems I’ve needed nature—not so much to write about as to shake me loose from the everyday worries of the (exciting) daily life I had in Ithaca. Nature was a path to concentration; I expected to find a different nature in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I would watch the crafts process. Maybe someone would even let me try something. Or ask me to tell them of the chemistry of their craft. I, in turn, would craft my poems out of the green hills. But this is not what happened; here’s what happened: I walk into Billie Ruth Sudduth’s basketry class, and there’s the whole group dyeing their canes, steaming pots of synthetic dye. I ask someone what they are doing, and she says, “Well, I’m getting ready for the upsetting,” and then seeing the puzzled look on my face, patiently explains this old, wonderfully direct basketry term for bending the canes forming the base of a basket over themselves, so that they stand up. I walk uphill to the iron shop, clearly more of a macho place, watch an intense young man, lawyer become sculptor as it turns out, hammer out a hand on a swage block. Ben tells me that it’s possible to burn away the carbon in the steel, and the iron would “burn” too, oxidize, in too hot a flame.

Hand knitting is a versatile experimental craft that can be explored in many ways. Knitting is the process of looping yarn around two or more needles to form a collection of interconnected loops that will eventually become a finished clothing item or another sort of fabric. This craft came to Sri Lanka during foreign invention and primarily to produce pure Norwegian wool yarns began producing machine knitted sweaters somewhere in the 1950's. And further expanded as cottage knitting centers in several of the island's rural communities. In literature, hand knitting is typically connected with western countries. Even though it is generally associated with the western countries, Sri Lanka also considers it as a heritage textile craft. Hand knitting is a common practice in every household worldwide. However, because of the lack of climatic necessity, hand knitting is not a well-established craft in Sri Lanka as compared to other crafts. And also, the knitting industry has still not started to cater in terms of the Sri Lankan context. Nevertheless, Sri Lanka has thriving, economy-based craft organizations and communities with highly talented artisans who have more than 35 years of expertise in hand knitting and produce export-quality goods to different countries. There are countless possibilities with hand knitting, and this method is capable of adapting to local context in many ways. Craftsman’s, different companies are also approaching this. The term "amalgamation" describes the mixing of cultures as opposed to one group eradicating another or one group assimilating itself into another. Hence Craft amalgamation is one approach where hand knitting can be introduced according to local preferences. The main objective and the intention of this research is to understand how local designers in Sri Lanka amalgamate various other heritage textile crafts in Sri Lanka with hand knitting technology to integrate into the local context. This creates an pportunity for local craft communities to uplift their craftsmanship towards the creative economy and also to give a new knowledge to the Local designers who tend to form new designs related to hand knitting for the local context. Literature reviews and case studies are used as the main research approach for this study to examine the Sri Lankan hand knitting industry and its strengths and weaknesses. Several case studies will be carried out for designers who are engaged with knitwear, and it will be conducted to identify the ways they have taken through the amalgamation of heritage crafts. Craft amalgamation may be challenging, but efforts have been made to remove these challenges from their design processes. In the end, each of these projects clearly illustrates the potential for craft amalgamation. Hence this will open up to future possibilities which are related to hand knitting.

This study aims to provide an overview of the craft beer industry and consumption in order to identify consumer preferences. More specifically, it aims to identify a target group of consumers and their willingness to pay (WTP) for craft beer and to enrich knowledge about consumer preferences and the product attributes that influence these preferences. Data were collected through a questionnaire completed by 231 participants. To evaluate the WTP for a 0.33 cl craft beer, they were asked to choose from five price levels starting from > 3 and less than 4 euro with an increase of 1 euro for each interval. To assess the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of beer quality on consumer choice, a Likert scale was proposed on: color, transparency, alcohol content, consistency, aroma, bitterness, raw materials, provenance, brand, price, label, market availability. The results of the study reveal that the majority choose to consume craft beer because they believe it is of higher quality and tastes better, which is why they are willing to spend more than on industrial beer. Consumers' preferences regarding craft beer attributes highlighted as most significant: body, aroma, brand and price. No recent studies have examined a model comparing these aspects, so this study could contribute to the development of new knowledges. Moreover, craft beer is more sustainable than the industrial one, so consumers attitude to buy and drink it should be encouraged.

For more than 5 years now, Working Group 22 of Technical Committee 188 of the International Standards Organization (ISO) has been developing a standard for the assessment and categorization of the stability of pleasure craft with a length up to 24 m. This work became necessary when the European Union decided to issue a Directive on Pleasure Craft, facilitating the export and import of pleasure craft to and from the various countries comprising the European Union. All newly-built pleasure craft up to 24 m in length, to be marketed in the European Union, must comply with the stability standard being developed, and some 50 other ISO standards, covering all aspects of structure, materials, equipment, etc, as of June 1998. To support the work of Working Group 22, The Netherlands carried out a comprehensive study for Part 2 of ISO 12217, covering the stability of mono-hull sailing craft. Together with the French, Swedish and UK delegates, this work finally lead to the development of a single stability index. Working Group 22, in September 1996, unanimously agreed to adopt this concept for the assessment and categorization of the stability of mono-hull sailing vessels. This paper gives a description of some of the work that was carried out by the Netherlands in this regard and gives a description of the single STability Index (STIX) concept and the way the STIX value is determined from the various stability and buoyancy properties of sailing vessels.

Recently, Transformers have shown promising performance in various vision tasks. To reduce the quadratic computation complexity caused by each query attending to all keys/values, various methods have constrained the range of attention within local regions, where each query only attends to keys/values within a hand-crafted window. However, these hand-crafted window partition mechanisms are data-agnostic and ignore their input content, so it is likely that one query maybe attend to irrelevant keys/values. To address this issue, we propose a Dynamic Group Attention (DG-Attention), which dynamically divides all queries into multiple groups and selects the most relevant keys/values for each group. Our DG-Attention can flexibly model more relevant dependencies without any spatial constraint that is used in hand-crafted window based attention. Built on the DG-Attention, we develop a general vision transformer backbone named Dynamic Group Transformer (DGT). Extensive experiments show that our models can outperform the state-of-the-art methods on multiple common vision tasks, including image classification, semantic segmentation, object detection, and instance segmentation.

In 2020, during archaeological exploration on the territory of ancient Gorgippia, the Archaeological team of “Diluch” Kubanarcheologiya” uncovered a small dilapidated furnace containing terracotta figurines fired in it: two identical hollow protoma-busts and a one-sided protoma-mask representing images of Kora-Persephone and the goddess Demeter. It is interesting that the products from this workshop were known to researchers before. A half-figure of Kora- Persephone, among other offerings, was discovered in the necropolis of Gorgippia (1954). In the same area of the ancient city, not far from the now found furnace and the necropolis, during construction work (1965), an accumulation of black-gloss vessels and terracotta was recorded, interpreted by researchers as a ‘temple dump’ associated with the sanctuary of the Eleusinian goddesses. Several figurines from this group are similar to the one-sided protoma extracted from the furnace in 2020. In ancient coroplastics, a number of problems often arise concerning the identification of the image, dating, determining the place of production, manufacturing technology and use of figurines. Thanks to the new open complex associated with the koroplast workshop, many issues, including the problem of the circulation of individual elements and the transformation of the image of the female deity, can be clarified.

National Park Service (NPS) managers face growing challenges resulting from the effects of climate change. In particular, as temperatures rise in coming decades, natural resource management in the western United States must cope with expectations for elevated severity and frequency of droughts. These challenges are particularly pronounced for vegetation managers in dryland environments. Developing adaptive strategies requires specific information about the expected magnitude of change in climate and drought conditions as well as insights into how those changes will affect important vegetation resources. This report describes research focused on Southeast Utah Group (SEUG) park units designed to provide information about exposure and sensitivity of perennial grasses to aridification. Analyses at larger regional scales are also reported for context and comparison. This report is a product of an ongoing climate adaptation collaboration between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), NPS, and Northern Arizona University. The study it summarizes contributes quantitative ingredients for vulnerability assessments that are needed in the Climate-Smart Conservation framework. As such, the results informed a series of climate adaptation workshops conducted between 2018 and 2021 for Colorado Plateau scientists and managers. This is a giant step forward in science-informed management. The information in this report can be used to craft management strategies that can be implemented at the right place and time for individual species of concern.

Resumo:
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  Building blocks: The ultimate aim should be to build rich, detailed and testable narratives situated within a European context, and addressing phenomena from the longue durée to the short-term over international to local scales. Chronological control is essential to this and effective dating strategies are required to enable generation-level analysis. The ‘serendipity factor’ of archaeological work must be enhanced by recognising and getting the most out of information-rich sites as they appear. o There is a pressing need to revisit the archives of excavated sites to extract more information from existing resources, notably through dating programmes targeted at regional sequences – the Western Isles Atlantic roundhouse sequence is an obvious target. o Many areas still lack anything beyond the baldest of settlement sequences, with little understanding of the relations between key site types. There is a need to get at least basic sequences from many more areas, either from sustained regional programmes or targeted sampling exercises. o Much of the methodologically innovative work and new insights have come from long-running research excavations. Such large-scale research projects are an important element in developing new approaches to the Iron Age.  Daily life and practice: There remains great potential to improve the understanding of people’s lives in the Iron Age through fresh approaches to, and integration of, existing and newly-excavated data. o House use. Rigorous analysis and innovative approaches, including experimental archaeology, should be employed to get the most out of the understanding of daily life through the strengths of the Scottish record, such as deposits within buildings, organic preservation and waterlogging. o Material culture. Artefact studies have the potential to be far more integral to understandings of Iron Age societies, both from the rich assemblages of the Atlantic area and less-rich lowland finds. Key areas of concern are basic studies of material groups (including the function of everyday items such as stone and bone tools, and the nature of craft processes – iron, copper alloy, bone/antler and shale offer particularly good evidence). Other key topics are: the role of ‘art’ and other forms of decoration and comparative approaches to assemblages to obtain synthetic views of the uses of material culture. o Field to feast. Subsistence practices are a core area of research essential to understanding past society, but different strands of evidence need to be more fully integrated, with a ‘field to feast’ approach, from production to consumption. The working of agricultural systems is poorly understood, from agricultural processes to cooking practices and cuisine: integrated work between different specialisms would assist greatly. There is a need for conceptual as well as practical perspectives – e.g. how were wild resources conceived? o Ritual practice. There has been valuable work in identifying depositional practices, such as deposition of animals or querns, which are thought to relate to house-based ritual practices, but there is great potential for further pattern-spotting, synthesis and interpretation. Iron Age Scotland: ScARF Panel Report v  Landscapes and regions:  Concepts of ‘region’ or ‘province’, and how they changed over time, need to be critically explored, because they are contentious, poorly defined and highly variable. What did Iron Age people see as their geographical horizons, and how did this change?  Attempts to understand the Iron Age landscape require improved, integrated survey methodologies, as existing approaches are inevitably partial.  Aspects of the landscape’s physical form and cover should be investigated more fully, in terms of vegetation (known only in outline over most of the country) and sea level change in key areas such as the firths of Moray and Forth.  Landscapes beyond settlement merit further work, e.g. the use of the landscape for deposition of objects or people, and what this tells us of contemporary perceptions and beliefs.  Concepts of inherited landscapes (how Iron Age communities saw and used this longlived land) and socal resilience to issues such as climate change should be explored more fully.  Reconstructing Iron Age societies. The changing structure of society over space and time in this period remains poorly understood. Researchers should interrogate the data for better and more explicitly-expressed understandings of social structures and relations between people.  The wider context: Researchers need to engage with the big questions of change on a European level (and beyond). Relationships with neighbouring areas (e.g. England, Ireland) and analogies from other areas (e.g. Scandinavia and the Low Countries) can help inform Scottish studies. Key big topics are: o The nature and effect of the introduction of iron. o The social processes lying behind evidence for movement and contact. o Parallels and differences in social processes and developments. o The changing nature of houses and households over this period, including the role of ‘substantial houses’, from crannogs to brochs, the development and role of complex architecture, and the shift away from roundhouses. o The chronology, nature and meaning of hillforts and other enclosed settlements. o Relationships with the Roman world
