Concern for the plight of rural veterinary practice in Australia existed throughout the 20th century. During the 1970s, the profession highlighted the problems faced by rural practitioners and in 2003, the Frawley Review examined current rural veterinary services. However, neither influenced the course of rural practice in Australia. The present thesis examined the status of rural practice in Western Australia from the 1960s to the present day. It did this by investigating the historical changes in agriculture during this period and their effect on rural practice. The practice at Katanning, in rural Western Australia, was used as a case study - a study of the changes and adaptions made by that practice to remain viable. In 2006, surveys of both rural practitioners and government veterinary officers were conducted to obtain information of the veterinary services being provided to rural Western Australia. In addition, oral history interviews with a number of respondents to the surveys were carried out. Rapid expansion of Western Australian agriculture took place during the 1960s and was matched by growth in rural veterinary services. A government subsidy scheme recruited a number of veterinarians to the state. A Preventive Medicine/Animal Production service with sheep was established at Katanning in 1967. The reasons for developing such a service, its promotion, the results achieved and its subsequent failure are documented in the thesis. The 1970s was a troubled decade for agriculture and for those servicing it. The collapse of the beef-cattle boom was accompanied by a 20% reduction in veterinary staff in rural practice Australia-wide and a number of changes were implemented at Katanning to meet these circumstances. The 1980s saw a reduction in the economic significance of agriculture in Western Australia. At the same time, students from the Veterinary School at Murdoch University began graduating and, for the first time in the profession's history, an overproduction of veterinarians existed. The 1990s was a period of relative stability, but was accompanied by major changes for the profession and rural practice. Many practices adopted merchandising and the sale of pet foods to supplement dwindling income. Previously, a male dominated profession, during this decade, it rapidly changed to one dominated by female graduates. Accompanying this gender change there was an increase in the demand for part-time work, whereas previously the profession had been predominantly a full-time vocation. The present decade opened with a questioning of the direction being taken by the profession and its undergraduate education. The current study revealed that the government veterinary services in Western Australia have contracted in size and scope, whilst at the same time, most rural practitioners attend companion animals at the expense of economic livestock. As a result, veterinary services to economic livestock have reduced and are likely to continue to do so and suggestions are made to counter this trend.

This dissertation explores contemporary Aboriginal spatial practices in Yamatji country, Western Australia, within the context of rural service provision by the State government. The central themes with which it engages are a) historical and contemporary conceptualisations of Aboriginal spatialities; b) the lived experiences of Aboriginal mobilities in the region; and c) the dialectical, and often contentious, relationship between Aboriginal spatial practices and public health, housing, and education services. Drawing primarily on a range of field interviews, the thesis opens up a discursive space for examining the cultural content and hidden assumptions in constructions of 'appropriate' models of spatial mobility. In taking a policy-oriented focus, it argues that the appropriate provision of basic government services requires a shift away from overly simplistic assumptions and discourses of Aboriginal mobility. Until the often subtle practices of rendering particular Aboriginal mobilities as irrational, deviant, and/or mysterious are challenged and replaced, deep-colonising practices in rural and remote Australia will persist. --The thesis reconceptualises contemporary Aboriginal spatial practices in Yamatji country based upon an examination of dynamics and circumstances that undergird Aboriginal mobilities in the region. With this empirical focus, it argues that Aboriginal spatial practices are fashioned by the processes of procuring, cultivating and contesting a sense of security and belonging. Case study material presented suggests that two primary considerations inform these processes. A post-settlement history of contested alienation from family and country (both sources from which belonging and security were traditionally derived), and a changing engagement with mainstream social and economic institutions, have produced a context in which security and belonging are iteratively derived from a number of sources. Contemporary Aboriginal spatial practices therefore take a complex variety of forms. The thesis concludes that adopting the framework of security and belonging for interpreting contemporary Aboriginal mobilities provides a starting point for engaging more effectively and intentionally with dynamic Aboriginal spatial practices in service delivery policy and practice.

Work/life balance researchers have documented the low take-up rates of corporate work/life balance policies at the same time as there are reports of persistent work/life pressures. This research aims to provide more comprehensive explanations of the phenomenon of low policy take-up than those currently available in the work/life balance literature which focus on organisational and individual factors. The research project is based on a critical review of the work/life balance literature which focuses on organisational solutions and starts from the assumption that the organisational approach to researching and addressing work/life conflicts is inherently limited, mainly because it does not theorise gender as a social structure and does not take into consideration the social and political context in which work/life arrangements are negotiated but focuses, instead, on individual employees and organisations. I integrated my critical review of the organisational work/life balance literature with concepts in the feminist literature, most importantly the gendered public/private divide, to create an explicit ‘gender lens’ which guides the interpretations of my findings. I applied this gender lens to Habermas’ model of societal evolution to operationalise it as an analytical tool for this research. From this theoretical basis, I designed a comparative research project, using Australia and Sweden as country case studies, which compares the approaches to work/life balance in the two countries. The focus of the analysis is on parental leave as one important example of work/life balance policies. The data for this research includes the parental leave legislation, public documents released by governments and associated bodies as well as national surveys on the take-up of parental leave provisions in both countries. Little research into historical, architectural and social significance of the picture theatre in pre-television rural Australian society has been undertaken. Taking a New South Wales country area (to represent a microcosm), this thesis records the picture venues and qualitative research material from past patrons and theatre staff. The study 1/. establishes the environment created by a picture theatre 2/. shows that New South Wales was typical of Australia in film attendance before the 1960s 3/. introduces the Central-West subject area, and describes how data was gathered from available records 4/. shows the development of the picture venues within the subject areas 5/. gives 'life' to the occasion formerly associated with going to the pictures 6/. suggests the success ot the rural picture shows was a happy co-incidence: the exhibitors' desire to make money and the patrons' desire for a social experience (and entertainment). A recommendation is made that one of the venues discovered during the course of research should be investigated for heritage listing. It is important that we should acknowledge the vital part that going to the pictures once played in pre-television days, especially in rural areas

"Genuine Cherry Red" is a fiction novel. It is the story of three people who live in a house beside a hill in the flattest place on earth - an almost fable-like setting. In different ways, each is locked inside the order and control they have constructed through the years. Surrounded by nature and its reliable cycle, they are resisting change and denying the unpredictable randomness of life. Marta is a young woman who is both intelligent and naïve, caught inside a private maze of thinking and rethinking. She lives with her mother's cousin Ena who gave up nursing to take Marta in when her mother succumbed to depression, and Ena' s husband Len, a successful and prolific writer of cowboy fiction. Since a cancer diagnosis, Len - who had been living with multiple sclerosis - has been virtually catatonic ... until Grey Bob suddenly arrives. The central character of Len's fictional stories permeates their lives and things begin to change. The natural environment, the people of the nearby town, the order of the house all transform and Marta, Ena and Len struggle to cope. But they have no choice. When the inevitable shifts occur, spontaneous events have impact and disease progresses, each member of the family eventually finds a way to deal with the fact that reality can be haphazard and out of their control. So, through the presence of a fictional character, three people are forced to confront the erratic nature of human life.

The translation of traditional Western Desert iconography, narrative conventions and ceremonial aesthetics into the medium of acrylic painting, and onto the emergent plane of 'Aboriginal Art', has been among the great artistic achievements of the modern era. Despite the wealth of scholarship dedicated to this phenomenon, key aspects of it remain obscured in anthropological and art historical analysis. Based on fieldwork in the Australian Western Desert community of Balgo, this thesis develops an ethnographic account of how 'Country' is created through abstraction, kin-based processes of transmission, and the economics of art. Combining methodologies from anthropology and art history, this research seeks to develop an appreciation of Western Desert abstraction as a socio-cultural process. Abstraction is treated not merely as a particular kind of distilled formalism that resonates visually with 20th Century Western art historical and critical notions, but as a conceptual and creative process linked to a deconstruction of form and reconfiguration of meaning. In Balgo art these processes have resulted in the iconographic forms of the desert graphic system being superseded by other aesthetic features of that same system, particularly the practice of 'dotting'. This thesis analyses the development of dotting and other technical innovations into 'styles', and explores how these styles have in turn become an object of exchange and contestation within Balgo. The thesis also grapples with another significant, and related, gap in the anthropological literature: that of the economic contexts around acrylic painting. While Aboriginal art is widely acknowledged as part of an economic system, the forms on canvas or bark are rarely analysed as themselves implicated in, responsive to and expressive of fields of economic influence and motivation. In order to move beyond the dominant ritual-oriented interpretations of desert painting, this research frames painting as a form of Aboriginal labour. I treat art as work. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis of the work of art, the thesis affords new interpretations around the novel forms on canvas as crystallizations of human action, as objectifications of value and the social processes that create it. In uniting the aesthetic and economic aspects of my analysis, I build a portrait of the way style develops between people who share camps and other resources. I show how the innovations and abstractions pioneered by individuals become sedimented in culture as tradition through processes of intergenerational transmission. In this context, as objectifications of practices of sharing and co-residence, the forms of acrylic Country in Balgo art can be understood not as representational, but as Country itself. Country in the form of acrylic dots, styles, entire paintings, or the relationship between paintings, is an embodiment or objectification of Aboriginal value that can be exchanged both within Balgo (between kin) and without (through the market) in the creation of other kinds of value. Through localised kin-based transmission of painting style and redistribution of artistic income, Balgo artists have recalibrated acrylic 'Country' as the customary basis of their economic autonomy.

This thesis follows the First World War generation from the Wagga Wagga district in southern New South Wales through the late nineteenth century to the mid-1930s. The environment in which Wagga’s soldiers grew up, their months or years in the army and their lives as returned men touch on the war’s most enduring themes. Wagga’s volunteers were the country men of AIF lore. Yet many earned their living in the same professions and occupations as city dwellers. While those who laboured on farms or worked as tradesmen might have been the bush men described by contemporaries like Charles Bean, a significant proportion of Wagga’s soldiers were not. Many of the local men who survived the war were profoundly affected. Some never recovered. But the evidence also indicates the breadth of returned soldiers’ involvement in the community. As well as the unemployed, the destitute, those who needed constant care and those who turned to crime, there were veterans who had jobs and families and managed to live what could be considered normal lives. Local war veterans who succeeded in business or politics, or who were active in community organisations, feature heavily in Wagga’s civic record, but most of the district’s returned men appear only fleetingly. While little of their personal and family lives can be gleaned from these sources, this absence is balanced by the often detailed and sometimes first-hand accounts of individuals’ circumstances in Repatriation Department files. Although these voluminous records are becoming better known they have not previously been used to inform an in-depth study of a single locale’s returned soldiers. The Government and civic records on Wagga combine to reveal the nuances that underlie the broader national story of the war and the AIF. On many important themes the district’s example suggests both the truth behind commonly accepted views and the extent to which they obscure a more complex reality.

This thesis moves through an old stony part of south-east Australia where Merri Creek trickles along a crack in the hardened urbanised lava flow of Melbourne’s north. I connect as a non- Indigenous woman with the First Nations Wurundjeri people here. Together we acknowledge Wurundjeri Country in the thesis through its fragmented grasslands, valleys and the remnants of indigenous plants and animals including reedy Phragmites and elusive Golden Sun Moths. In Australia, ‘Country’ with a capital ‘C’, doesn’t simply refer to creeks, rocky outcrops, or hills in ‘landscape’ terms. Rather, ‘Country’ describes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ family origins and associations with particular places and embraces spiritual, physical, social and cultural connections. The thesis began in the contemporary contact zone from relationships between Merri Creek Management Committee where I work, and Wurundjeri Tribe Land Compensation and Cultural Heritage Council. This thesis was planned with the Wurundjeri people I worked with. Noticing the lack of published work about Wurundjeri Country today motivated some of us who were working together to shape the necessary intercultural agreements so I could address the issues carefully in this academic context. We designed the thesis as a storying of the things we saw, did and made that connected us to Wurundjeri Country. The overarching research question between us became: ‘How do we see, feel and identify Wurundjeri Country in a contact zone of cultural differences, in a largely urbanised place?’ The formal study positioned me as researcher and therefore created a different relationship for Wurundjeri people and me. As researcher, I had to sharpen my attention to colonisation, my non-Indigeneity, and concerns regarding representation and the risks involved, such as the production of deficit narratives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Within the developing thesis, I began to recognise how layers of volatility contained unexpected possibilities in a contact zone of differences, boundaries, and responsibilities. I have used a relational, emergent and decolonising approach to read the materiality of Country and its objects, creatures, rocks, bark, feathers, plants and ochre. The product is a ‘deep map’ of Wurundjeri Country that includes our various ‘makings’, including necklaces, bouquets, shields and skirts, and two recorded conversations with two Wurundjeri leaders. This is all expressed alongside my etchings, letter writing, and journaling. The emergent deep map is ‘a/r/tographic’ in the sense that it combines art, research, teaching, writing, talking, making, feeling, and learning (Springgay et al., 2005). The concept of ‘the art of place-making’ produces this contemporary deep map of Wurundjeri Country with its intercultural volatilities as well as the unpredictable qualities of making, talking, and remembering. Findings unfolded by constantly going to and fro with people, ideas, places, materials and sharing draft versions of the text. A commitment to motion and a multiplicity of methods is shown to be a vital part of ethical practice in the contact zone, a momentum which built rich exchanges here and is applicable to knowing Country at the cultural interface elsewhere in Australia. In all these ways, ‘antiphonal calling’ has become the signature of this thesis. While antiphonal calling ordinarily refers to vocalising between birds or interacting choirs, here, antiphonal calling lies within intercultural encounters, and with Country. My antiphonal methodology is relational geologically, ancestrally, archivally, contemporarily, and seasonally. The antiphonal prism calls between intercultural spaces to connect in multiple ways with the crying, singing, and feeling that continues to make Wurundjeri Country knowable today.
