In some situations weak convergence in L1, implies strong convergence. Let P, L: T → C∘(ℝd) be measurable multifunctions (C∘(ℝd) being the set of closed, convex subsets of ℝd) the values L(t) affine sets and W(t) = P(t) ∩ L(t) extremal faces of P(t). Let pk be integrable selections of P, the projection of pk,(t) on L(t) and pk(t) on W(t). We prove that if converges weakly to zero then pk − k converges to zero in measure. We give also some extensions of this theorem. As applications to differential inclusions we investigate convergence of derivatives of convergent sequences of solutions and we describe solutions which are in some sense isolated. Finally we discuss what can be said about control functions u when the corresponding trajectories of ẋ = f(t, x, u) are convergent to some trajectory.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate sequences of event and the resulting innovation paths and trajectories followed by a university spin-off organization. Design/methodology/approach A single longitudinal case study methodology was applied to analyze innovation events and paths along the trajectory. Narrative methods were used to analyze actor perceptions on innovation processes/events. Findings The study categorizes events and paths in two categories, technical and commercialization, and finds that lock-in events matter for convergence of an innovation trajectory. The results indicate that understanding critical events may assist timely interventions in the innovation paths, thus potentially avoiding disruptions of the development of an innovation trajectory. The temporal processes reveal contrasting convergence–divergence patterns in the trajectory, depending on the types of events that occur. Research limitations/implications Using a single case data may limit the applicability of the findings, which calls for future research. Practical implications Industries could monitor the technical and commercialization paths as a strategy to reduce “vulnerability” of the innovation trajectory and possible negative impacts. Knowledge about the role of the CEO is key for a university spin-off organization. Originality/value This study presents a new typology of events and paths, identifies and characterizes lock-in events and shows the relatively fragile dexterity between convergent and divergent paths along an innovation trajectory.

A mathematical model is established for self-twist spinning process by applying laws of fluid mechanics (i.e. mass conservation and momentum conservation). The motion curve of the convergent point was determined and the convergence point was decided by densities and velocities of two fed-in strands and the resultant self-twist yarn, independent of their mechanical properties. The experimental verification proves that the motion trajectory of the convergence point reaches a better agreement with the theoretical trajectory. The results provide general way to study the self-twist yarn spinning process and optimize the process parameters.

Throughout the entire period of market transformations, the trend towards the distance of the Russian economy from technologically advanced countries has persisted, in terms of both the dynamics of the main macroeconomic indicators and structural proportions. This is due to the high sensitivity of the Russian economy to external shocks, including technological ones, as well as a number of successive negative structural shifts. At the same time, the commonality of endogenous processes, which affect the structure of factors of production and distribution of national income, in the economies of advanced and catching up countries is not fully associated with economic convergence. The studies are dominated by exogenous sources of convergence - sociopolitical, cultural. Therefore, the study of the role and place of structural shifts in the system of economic convergence is a methodological approach that allows one to come close to the theoretical foundations for stabilizing macroeconomic dynamics, reducing the susceptibility of the national economy to external shocks, and entering a long-term growth trajectory above world rates. In this article, the authors consider the problem of launching convergent structural shifts - the basis for the transition of the Russian economy from economic divergence to convergence with advanced countries, which was the basis for the aim of this study. Within the framework of this article, a methodology for analyzing structural shifts in their mutual influence on technological, structural and economic convergence is presented. The authors give a typology of convergent and divergent structural shifts that bring the national economy closer or further away from technologically advanced market systems. Such a typology of structural shifts implies the endogenous nature of economic convergence, due to a change in the proportions of accumulation and consumption, the involvement of production factors in the creation of national income and its distribution, contrary to the prevailing exogenous approach to the study of economic convergence. Based on the presented typology, the article highlights the factors of structural convergence -neo-industrial and fundamental investment, associated with a priority increase in funding for fundamental research, the creation of new innovation and investment partnerships between the state and business, and the modernization of basic industries based on convergent technologies. The authors show that these factors should be institutionalized in a system of convergence-oriented structural policy, which is a key condition for the transition of the Russian economy from structural divergence to convergence, with access to a sustainable growth trajectory and a reduction in exposure to external shocks.

The dynamics model of the unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) system is highly nonlinear, multi-degree-of-freedom, strongly coupled, and time-varying. Its motion control has been a complex problem due to the unknown information about and the uncertainty of the working environment. To improve the performance and reliability of UUV trajectory tracking control, a trajectory tracking method based on nonlinear model predictive control is designed, and an improved gray wolf optimization (IGWO) is proposed for the optimization of nonlinear model predictive control. The convergence factor of IGWO is designed as a nonlinear attenuation function, and the memory function is added to the position update equation to enhance the effect of trajectory tracking control. Through the simulation in the ROS environment, the influence of the convergence factor on the convergence rate of trajectory tracking error and tracking control performance is obtained. By comparing the tracking effects of several groups of reference trajectories, it is shown that the proposed method is universally applicable and effective to the trajectory tracking control of UUV. Compared with traditional gray wolf optimization (GWO), SQP, and other optimization algorithms, the reliability of the proposed method for UUV trajectory tracking control is demonstrated.

Consider the problem of developing an algorithm that computes optimal preprogrammed evasive maneuvers for a Maneuvering Reentry Vehicle (MaRV) attacking a target defended with Anti-Ballistic Missiles (ABMs). The problem is large in terms of the number of optimization parameters, and perhaps in terms of the number of nonlinear constraints. Since both MaRV and ABM trajectories are expensive to compute, rapid convergence of the optimization algorithm is of prime concern. This paper examines a discontinuity in the cost function that degrades both the speed and the reliability of optimizer convergence. A solution is offered, proposing that the optimization algorithm be operated in a new parameter space, in which the discontinuity occurs at infinity. Effectively, the mapping prevents the optimization algorithm from crossing the discontinuity thereby improving optimizer convergence. Results comparing convergence with and without the parameter mapping demonstrate the effectiveness of the procedure.

Motivated by the ubiquity of optimization in many areas of science and engineering, particularly in data science, this thesis exploits the close link between continuous-time dissipative dynamical systems and optimization algorithms to provide a systematic analysis of the global and local behavior of several first- and second-order systems, focusing on convex, stochastic, and infinite-dimensional settings on the one hand, and non-convex, deterministic, and finite-dimensional settings on the other hand. For stochastic convex minimization problems in infinite-dimensional separable real Hilbert spaces, our key proposal is to analyze them through the lens of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) and inclusions (SDIs), as well as their inertial variants. We first consider smooth differentiable convex problems and first-order SDEs, demonstrating almost sure weak convergence towards minimizers under integrability of the noise and providing a comprehensive global and local complexity analysis. We also study composite non-smooth convex problems using first-order SDIs, and show under integrability conditions on the noise, almost sure weak convergence of the trajectory towards a minimizer, with Tikhonov regularization almost sure strong convergence of trajectory to the minimal norm solution. We then turn to developing a unified mathematical framework for analyzing second-order stochastic inertial dynamics via time scaling and averaging of stochastic first-order dynamics, achieving almost sure weak convergence of trajectories towards minimizers and fast convergence of values and gradients. These results are extended to more general second-order SDEs with viscous and Hessian-driven damping, utilizing a dedicated Lyapunov analysis to prove convergence and establish new convergence rates. Finally, we study deterministic non-convex optimization problems and propose several inertial algorithms to solve them derived from second-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) combining both non-vanishing viscous damping and geometric Hessian-driven damping in explicit and implicit forms. We first prove convergence of the continuous-time trajectories of the ODEs to a critical point under the Kurdyka-Lojasiewicz (KL) property with explicit rates, and generically to a local minimum under a Morse condition. Moreover, we propose algorithmic schemes by appropriate discretization of these ODEs and show that all previous properties of the continuous-time trajectories still hold in the discrete setting under a proper choice of the stepsize

Despite the restricted morphology and distribution of sloths today, fossils sloths show a wide variety of forms and behaviors and used to range from South America to Alaska. These extinct forms have in the past simply been lumped together as "ground sloths", separated from modern "tree sloths". However there are intermediate forms that have been posited to be semi-arboreal. In other groups such as primates the shape of the shoulder blade has been shown to vary significantly between groups with different arboreal behaviors. This study used geometric morphometrics to examine the scapulae of modern and extinct sloths to show that these three locomotor groups can in fact be distinguished by their shoulder blade shape. Juveniles of giant ground sloths also have significantly different shoulder blade shapes than the much larger adults, however they do not overlap with the smaller intermediate sloths, so may have been just as terrestrial as their parents despite their much smaller size. Finally, ontogenetic trajectories of several sloth genera do not show evidence of having different slopes. They start and end in different areas of morhospace but are all on parallel paths. This argues against the hypothesis of convergence in modern tree sloths, which despite both having an unusual suspensory lifestyle are not closely related. Rather they are both retaining an ancestral growth trajectory that all sloths have possessed.

Ranking reports on the five sub dimensions and aggregated CIRD were provided in order to better measure the developmental degrees of 31 or 30 Chinese provinces and municipalities over 13 years from 1998 to 2010 as the time interval of three “Five-year Plans”. Further empirical applications of this CIRD focused on clustering and convergence estimation, attempting to fill up the gap in quantifying the developmental levels of regional comprehensive socioeconomics and estimating the dynamic convergence trajectory of regional sustainable development in a long run. Four clusters were benchmarked geographically-oriented in the map on the basis of cluster analysis, and club-convergence was observed in the Chinese provinces and municipalities based on stochastic kernel density estimation.

This thesis + portuguese trajectory ;, is the result of a long research in documentary film-making through photography, film and video, of the immigrant portuguese population in the region of paris, during the period of 1984-1998. About 100 individuals were interviewed. The images record their experiences, from 1960-1970, to find lodging and employment and - in the 30 years that followed - portray their efforts to participate in the economic and cultural, artistic and scientific life in the country which accepted them - while at the same time they tried to maintain their unique personalities and cultural heritage, as well as participate in the economic life and development of their country of origin. Between 1984 and 1997, a large amount of footage was made that was based on interviews, reports and varieties of other documented materials. At the same time, an analysis was continually made during this research in order to develop an approach and understanding of these people who balanced their lives between the country of their origin and france. This is, in fact, a mixed thesis which aims to establish a relationship between film and text. The purpose of the film is to establish a record of image and sound for the future. Considering all the new ways we have to communicate, the camera certainly permits us to film reality - and isn't the documentary film the best mean of expression ? note - in this thesis of 605 pages, 308 are devoted to the description of the daily life of this people. The balance of the study is a more detailed discussion of the film-making techniques

The growing interest in lunar exploration demands the development of spacecraft which can land autonomously on the Moon’s surface. Typically, such missions define an ellipse around some selected landing point and any location within this ellipse is deemed acceptable for touchdown. To ensure a safe landing, a spacecraft can employ a hazard detection and avoidance (HDA) system, capable of identifying potential dangers at the target and triggering diversion to another point within the ellipse. The choice of landing site for a mission is a compromise between scientific priorities and landing safety. However, many scientific sites of interest may not be well-suited to landers as there may be hazards, such as craters or rocks, which greatly limit the size of a potential landing ellipse. To enable a broader range of missions, a lander should be capable of diverting to a new target at relatively low altitude and efficiently reaching the target with pinpoint accuracy. This would not only make it possible to reduce the minimum landing ellipse size for a given vehicle design, but it would also allow for a relaxation of the surface hazard requirements within the chosen ellipse. If this can be achieved, then a much more versatile set of lunar landing sites can be considered, prioritising scientific needs over engineering limitations. Fast and accurate retargeting demands a sophisticated guidance algorithm which can rapidly compute a trajectory to a new point. This paper presents progress on such an algorithm, which solves a trajectory optimisation problem to achieve fuel-optimal pinpoint landing. To enable late diversion, this algorithm must be able to run on board the spacecraft in real time, and so our research has focused on the use of fast, resource-efficient methods based on sequential convex programming. We recommend two related strategies which can enable fast termination of sequential convex programming algorithms: Hermite interpolation to extract a continuous-time state trajectory from the convex solver, and mesh refinement to enable efficient convergence towards an accurate solution. In combination, these techniques can ensure that the algorithm terminates after only a few iterations, using relatively relaxed stopping criteria, while still producing a feasible solution which can exactly satisfy terminal equality constraints. The benefits of this framework are demonstrated using the case study of guidance for an autonomous lunar lander with a complete model of the system dynamics in six degrees of freedom.

Abstract The aim of this work is to propose a data-driven ILC algorithm that features fast convergence for nonlinear dynamic systems. This idea utilizes adaptive filtering that implicitly identifies the time-varying system inverse along the trajectory being tracked. By feeding the error signal through the copied inverse filter, it results in a rapidly convergent inversion-based ILC. This approach is compared to a nonlinear extension of the data-driven ILC that uses system adjoint as the learning filter. The developed algorithm is validated through simulation on a fully actuated 2 DOF Furuta pendulum.

In multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL), the epsilon-greedy method plays an important role in balancing exploration and exploitation during the decision-making process in value-based algorithms. However, the epsilon-greedy exploration process will introduce conservativeness when calculating the expected state value when the agents are more in need of exploitation during the approximate policy convergence, which may result in a suboptimal policy convergence. Besides, eliminating the epsilon-greedy algorithm leaves no exploration and may lead to unacceptable local optimal policies. To address this dilemma, we use the previously collected trajectories to construct a Monte-Carlo Trajectory Tree, so that an existing optimal template, a sequence of state prototypes, can be planned out. The agents start by following the planned template and act according to the policy without exploration, Stable Prefix Policy. The agents will adaptively dropout and begin to explore by following the epsilon-greedy method when the policy still needs exploration. We scale our approach to various value-based MARL methods and empirically verify our method in a cooperative MARL task, SMAC benchmarks. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves not only better performance but also faster convergence speed than baseline algorithms within early time steps.

Abstract This paper aims to achieve improved control over the spray pattern in a wire arc torch by means of constructive measures to influence the flow dynamics. It focuses on evaluating different fluid dynamic designs of the spray torches with respect to the droplet trajectories and velocity distributions and the deposit distribution. First, the paper describes the approaches for novel nozzle designs including the addition of shrouds and the torch evaluation diagnostics, and then presents the results for four different nozzle arrangements. It is observed that the nozzle design and the placement of the wire tips within the nozzle have the greatest effect on the divergence of the spray pattern. Paper includes a German-language abstract.

Today’s China presents fundamental challenges to the democracies of Europe and North America. Perspectives on China will continue to differ due to geography, economic exposure, perceptions, historical trajectories as well as foreign policy approaches. But there has been significant convergence among transatlantic partners. Today, areas of agreement are substantial and offer a solid basis for cooperation. What is needed is a pragmatic approach identifying joint action where possible and managing differences where necessary. This report proposes a transatlantic agenda aimed at achieving quick wins, with recommendations organized by seven issue areas.

Current understanding of the cyber postures of China, Russia, the USA and the EU merits re-evaluation. It is often assumed that China and Russia are aligned, yet this is not always the case. Unlike Russia, which has an ongoing focus on information security, China’s official documents incorporate both information security and cybersecurity concerns that are similar to the USA and the EU. Moreover, while often paired, the USA and the EU have differing regulatory structures in cyberspace. Further, both actors increasingly mirror Russian and Chinese concerns about the impact of information warfare on domestic stability. By examining key trends in each actor’s cyber posture, this report identifies points of convergence and divergence. Its conclusions will inform a broader SIPRI project that maps cyber posture trajectories and explores trilateral cyber dynamics among China, Russia and the USA to assist the EU in navigating future cyber escalation and enhancing global cyber stability.

We are on the cusp of the fastest, deepest, most profound disruption of the energy sector in over a century. Like most disruptions, this one is being driven by the convergence of several key technologies whose costs and capabilities have been improving on consistent and predictable trajectories – namely, solar photovoltaic power, wind power, and lithium-ion battery energy storage. Our analysis shows that 100% clean electricity from the combination of solar, wind, and batteries (SWB) is both physically possible and economically affordable across the entire continental United States as well as the overwhelming majority of other populated regions of the world by 2030. Adoption of SWB is growing exponentially worldwide and disruption is now inevitable because by 2030 they will offer the cheapest electricity option for most regions. Coal, gas, and nuclear power assets will become stranded during the 2020s, and no new investment in these technologies is rational from this point forward.

Using data for 17 countries in Europe and North America, we compare the career trajectories of mothers and fathers and of women and men without children across cohorts and at different points in their life cycle. There is wide cross-country variation in employment and earnings gaps at age 30. At age 50, however, employment gaps between mothers and non-mothers have closed in most countries. We also observe convergence in employment gaps between mothers and fathers by age 50, but these gaps do not close altogether. Motherhood gaps in earnings also close by age 50 between mothers and non-mothers, particularly among the highly educated. But there is strong persistence in earnings gaps between mothers and fathers even among highly educated parents. The main reasons for the remaining gaps at later stages in the life-cycle are part-time work among women and fatherhood premia as fathers’ earnings outperform non-fathers’ over their life-cycle.
