A problematic term and/or a disturbing reality Often dubious or allergic, even downright negative, the reactions to the word “Francophone”, a term whose meaning is nevertheless clear, do not fail to raise questions. They are particularly strong in the literary field where more and more Francophone literatures are developing, the emergence, study and recognition of which always come up against resistance without equal in other linguistic areas resulting from European colonization. The explanation lies at the very heart of the History of France and of the Franco-French structures for apprehending the world – particularly through the place and the conception of the language and literature that signify it – what the author calls the French ideology. The effects of Parisian editorial centralism, unique in the world, are also studied, as well as the contrasting consequences of the political use made of the French language and its supposed universality. Diverse historical strata and contemporary contradictions are meticulously analysed, as well as the obstacles to considering and building a plural Franco-Francophone space. What the rejection of the word “Francophone” refers to is the realities that it designates and forces us to recognize fundamentally. They call into question a habitus.

Franco...who? Franco...what? Lexical considerations at beginner level or some provocative questions without definitive answers “Francophones”, “francographes”, “francophiles”, “francophobes”... What an extraordinary word-formation richness! Not to mention similar words, more complicated and difficult to translate : “francology” (scientific discipline), “francité” (“frenchness”), “francogène” (“of francophone origin”). Although they all contain the same prefix “franco-”, all these concepts introduce a sense of inconsistency: for some of them refer to the world of francophony, while others are closely related only to France or its inhabitants. Why? Is it correct and fair? What good/bad comes from this confusion? This is an issue that the author ponders on, without giving obvious answers, but rather provoking to pose further disturbing questions about the identity of contemporary and future francophony.

This article seeks to examine how contemporary works of fiction and non-fiction by women from Cuba and Brazil are translated and marketed for Francophone readers. It will focus on Wendy Guer­ra’s novels, translated into French by Marianne Millon, and on contemporary Brazilian (non) fic­tion translated into French by Paula Anacaona, the head of Anacaona Éditions, a publishing outlet specialized in Brazilian literature for Francophone readers. The contribution will start with a brief presentation of the French publishing sector and some of the recurring patterns observed in what is often labeled as littérature étrangère or littérature monde (foreign literature and world literature, respec­tively), exploring various layers of intervention that appear in translated fiction. The article will then further explore the role of paratext in the marketing of Caribbean literatures for (non-)metropolitan French audiences, before it examines the translations of Todos se van and Domingo de Revolución by Cuban writer Wendy Guerra. Paratextual matter in Marianne Millon’s Tout le monde s’en va and Un dimanche de révolution will be analyzed as a site of feminine co-production, in which the author and the translator’s voices at times collide in unison and at others create dissonance. In the case of Do­mingo de revolución, the French translator’s practices will be compared to Cuban-American Achy Obe­jas’s English translation (Revolution Sunday), in the hope of highlighting varying degrees of cultural appropriation and/or acculturation, depending on the translator’s habitus and trajectory (Bourdieu) and her own background. These reflections will lead to a broader analysis of paratext as a site of further agency and potential redress as (Afro-) Brazilian history and literature are examined in works circulated by writer/translator/publisher Paula Anacaona. Ultimately, figures traditionally sidelined from hegemonic and patriarchal (his)stories, whose voices are restored in Anacaona’s paratextual practices, will serve as illustrations of feminine publishing practices that challenge (phallo-)centric models from the metropolis.

The purpose of this article is to examine the issue of interculturality in contemporary Francophone literatures in the language classroom. As a tool of a humanist and intercultural education, the purpose of which is based on the awareness of cultural diversity and dialogue with the alterity, the literary text thus becomes a mediator in the development of intercultural competence. To illustrate this hypothesis, three texts will serve as a reference for this purpose: Dans le ventre du Congo (2021) by Blaise Ndala which tells the story of the conflictual relationship between Belgium and the colonized Congo; Les Impatientes (2020) by Djaili Amadou Amal which evokes the problem of violence against Cameroonian women, while La dynastie des boiteux. Zoonomia (2018) by Bessora deals with the figure of a Reunionese naturalist explorer of colonized Africa.

This article analyzes Shumona Sinha’s first novel, Fenêtre sur l’abîme (Window to the Abyss, 2008) from a cognitive perspective. As the narrator, a young Bengali woman named Madhuban, is struggling to make sense of her existence, past events and present sensations, as well as nightmares and memories unfold in an accelerating rhythm, questioning the impact of her life experience upon her mental health. Drawing on Alan Palmer’s typology of fictional minds, the aim of this work is to provide some preliminary remarks on the textual representation of the narrator’s mind, depicted on the verge of a mental breakdown triggered the by physical and emotional abuse she was subjected to by her family in Calcutta, and reinforced by her emigration to Paris.

This special issue follows a conference entitled ‘Rencontres: A Gathering of Voices of the Vietnamese Diaspora’ that was held at the University of Melbourne, December 1-2 in 2016 and which sought to enable, for the first time, the titular transdiasporic rencontres or encounters between international authors of the Vietnamese diaspora. The present amalgam of previously unpublished texts written by celebrated Francophone and Anglophone authors of Vietnamese descent writing in France, New Caledonia and Australia today is the result of the intercultural exchanges that took place during that event. Literary texts by Linda Lê, Anna Moï and Thanh-Van Tran-Nhut are followed by writerly reflections on the theme of transdiasporic encounters from Hoai Huong Nguyen, Jean Vanmai and Hoa Pham. Framing and enriching these texts, scholarly contributions by established experts in the field consider the literary, cultural and linguistic transfers that characterize contemporary writing by authors of Vietnamese origin across the Francophone world. Ce volume spécial réunit les Actes du colloque ‘Rencontres : A Gathering of Voices of the Vietnamese Diaspora’ qui s’est tenue à l’Université de Melbourne les 1er et 2 décembre 2016 et qui visait à faciliter, pour la première fois, les rencontres entre les auteurs, chercheurs et universitaires internationaux de la diaspora vietnamienne. Les fruits de leurs échanges interculturels y sont réunis dans ce présent recueil sous deux formes complémentaires : d’un côté, les articles d’experts en littérature francophone comparée ; de l’autre, les contributions créatives de célèbres auteurs francophones et anglophones d’origine vietnamienne basés aujourd’hui en France, en Nouvelle Calédonie et en Australie. Les textes littéraires de Linda Lê, Anna Moï et Thanh-Van Tran-Nhut, suivis de réflexions d’auteurs par Hoai Huong Nguyen, Hoa Pham et Jean Vanmai sur le thème des rencontres transdiasporiques, se retrouvent enrichis par les études savantes menées sur les transferts littéraires, culturelles et linguistiques qui caractérisent l’écriture contemporaine des écrivains d’origine vietnamienne dans le monde francophone.

This thesis compares contemporary anglophone and francophone rewritings of traditional fairy tales for adults. Examining material dating from the 1990s to the present, including novels, novellas, short stories, comics, televisual and filmic adaptations, this thesis argues that while the revisions studied share similar themes and have comparable aims, the methods for inducing wonder (where wonder is defined as the effect produced by the text rather than simply its magical contents) are diametrically opposed, and it is this opposition that characterises the difference between the two types of rewriting. While they all engage with the hybridity of the fairy-tale genre, the anglophone works studied tend to question traditional narratives by keeping the fantasy setting, while francophone works debunk the tales not only in relation to questions of content, but also aesthetics. Through theoretical, historical, and cultural contextualisation, along with close readings of the texts, this thesis aims to demonstrate the existence of this francophone/anglophone divide and to explain how and why the authors in each tradition tend to adopt such different views while rewriting similar material. This division is the guiding thread of the thesis and also functions as a springboard to explore other concepts such as genre hybridity, reader-response, and feminism. The thesis is divided into two parts; the first three chapters work as an in-depth literature review: after examining, in chapters one and two, the historical and contemporary cultural field in which these works were created, chapter three examines theories of fantasy and genre hybridity. The second part of the thesis consists of textual studies and comparisons between francophone and anglophone material and is built on three different approaches. The first (chapter four) looks at selected texts in relation to questions of form, studying the process of world building and world creation enacted when authors combine and rewrite several fairy tales in a single narrative world. The second (chapter five) is a thematic approach which investigates the interactions between femininity, the monstrous, and the wondrous in contemporary tales of animal brides. Finally, chapter six compares rewritings of the tale of ‘Bluebeard’ with a comparison hinged on the representation of the forbidden room and its contents: Bluebeard’s cabinet of wonder is one that he holds sacred, one where he sublimates his wives’ corpses, and it is the catalyst of wonder, terror, and awe. The three contextual chapters and the three text-based studies work towards tracing the tangible existence of the division postulated between francophone and anglophone texts, but also the similarities that exist between the two cultural fields and their roles in the renewal of the fairy-tale genre.

La crise écologique, et ce que l’on a nommé en Europe, à partir de 2015, la « crise migratoire », se détachent comme les deux grands écueils de l’habitation contemporaine, faisant signe l’une et l’autre vers une Terre de plus en plus inhospitalière. Plus encore, les deux « crises » se nouent aujourd’hui d’une manière nouvelle. Alors que les limites planétaires se font sentir et que l’ancienne « Terre des hommes » a pris le visage méconnaissable de Gaïa, figure mouvante et réactive, tissée d’une multitude d’agents incontrôlables, l’humanité et les vivants se trouvent collectivement embarqués dans une condition migratoire inédite, en quête d’une Terre « où atterrir » (Bruno Latour). La thèse part de cette image de la « perte de la Terre » qui fait symptôme dans le champ contemporain des pensées de l’écologie, et se demande « qui perd (ou a perdu) quoi, sur quelle Terre. Depuis les littératures francophones, et en dialogue avec les sciences sociales et les études postcoloniales, elle mène une enquête sur la transformation des imaginaires terrestres, au croisement des enjeux écologiques et migratoires. On nomme « gaïagraphies » les textes qui, en littérature ou au sein des humanités environnementales, s’attachent à appréhender une Terre qui se retire, de Patrick Chamoiseau à Kossi Efoui, de Bruno Latour à Donna Haraway, en passant par Rachel Carson, Fabienne Raphoz, Aimé Césaire, Édouard Glissant ou Michel Deguy. Avec elles, on interroge les migrations terrestres au prisme d’un double élargissement. Un élargissement temporel : on plonge dans la période coloniale, époque de migrations conquérantes et de déportations transatlantiques, pour mettre au jour les imaginaires migratoires et écologiques (coloniaux et décoloniaux) qu’elle a contribué à forger, et qui continuent d’agir dans le présent. Un élargissement des formes de vie considérées : on se penche, au-delà des seules migrations humaines, sur les migrations des vivants ; on interroge alors le sens et la portée de propositions littéraires qui s’attachent à penser l’humain à travers l’oiseau qui migre, ou à emprunter le détour de la graine qui voyage. Dans cette traversée des imaginaires de la « zone critique » – des sols abîmés aux souterrains, sous-marins et sous-bois, du ciel cosmique aux îles reliées en archipel, Gaïa émerge comme Terre en perpétuelles migrations, créole et décoloniale, sans cesse remodelée par les voyages des vivants migrateurs
The ecological crisis and what has been termed in Europe, since 2015, the "migration crisis" stand out as the two major pitfalls of contemporary habitation, both pointing towards an increasingly inhospitable Earth. Moreover, these two "crises" are intertwining today in a new way. As planetary limits become apparent and the former "Earth of humankind" has taken on the unrecognizable face of Gaia - a shifting and reactive figure, woven from a multitude of uncontrollable agents - humanity and all living beings find themselves collectively embarked in an unprecedented migratory condition, in search of an Earth "where they can land" (Bruno Latour). This thesis is sparked by the image of the "loss of the Earth" that has become symptomatic in the contemporary field of ecological thought, and asks "who loses (or has lost) what, on which Earth?" From the perspective of Francophone literatures, and in dialogue with social sciences and postcolonial studies, it conducts an investigation into the transformation of terrestrial imaginaries, at the intersection of ecological and migratory issues. We call "Gaiagraphies" the texts that, in literature or within environmental humanities, attempt to apprehend a retreating Earth, from Patrick Chamoiseau to Kossi Efoui, from Bruno Latour to Donna Haraway, including Rachel Carson, Fabienne Raphoz, Aimé Césaire, Édouard Glissant, or Michel Deguy. With them, we examine terrestrial migrations through the prism of a dual expansion. A temporal expansion: we delve into the colonial period, an era of conquering migrations and Transatlantic deportations, to uncover the migratory and ecological imaginaries (colonial and decolonial) it helped forge, and which continue to act in the present. An expansion of the forms of life considered: we look beyond human migrations alone to examine the migrations of all living beings; we then question the meaning and scope of literary propositions that seek to think about the human through the migrating bird, or to take the detour of the traveling seed. In this journey through the imaginaries of the "critical zone" - from damaged soils to the worlds found underground, underwater and in the undergrowth, from the cosmic sky to islands connected in an archipelago, Gaia emerges as an Earth in perpetual migrations, creole and decolonial, constantly reshaped by the journeys of migratory living beings

Este trabalho tem como primeiro objetivo a análise de alguns aspectos do romance francófono belga contemporâneo Orlanda, publicado em 1996 pela autora Jacqueline Harpman. Na parte inicial, apresentamos a Bélgica, sua história e suas letras francófonas; os debates sobre a legitimidade de uma identidade nacional belga específica assim como os discursos que procuram afirmar ou negar a existência de um campo literário belga francófono autônomo são a linha de pensamento desta fase do presente estudo. A segunda parte trata de analisar a narrativa Orlanda. Descrevemos a composição geral do romance (o enredo, o narrador, o tempo e as personagens) e aprofundamos em seguida dois aspectos do romance: o jogo metadiscursivo e o mito do andrógino. A análise do romance evidencia uma narrativa que desvenda certos mecanismos do gênero romanesco; o mito do andrógino faz surgir níveis de significados como a tradição e a modernidade, a ficção e a realidade, o autor e sua atividade como escritor. Um itinerário biográfico sobre Jacqueline Harpman e uma descrição (muito breve) dos dezenove romances publicados pela autora até hoje são inseridos em anexo.

This dissertation examines colonial legacies and transnational identities in the works of four francophone writers from Algeria: Hélène Cixous, Zahia Rahmani, Nina Bouraoui, and Boualem Sansal. Their autobiographical and fictional texts focus respectively on the history and memory of a particular minority identity singled out by French colonialism: the Jews of Algeria, the Harkis (indigenous Algerians who fought in the French Army during the War of Independence), the “métis” (mixed-race) individuals, and the “pieds-noirs” (European settlers). The memory of these historical minorities still continue to shape identities in contemporary Algerian and French societies, beset by “wars of memory” about the colonial past and the War of Independence. The writers’ texts confront the official memory and national narratives of both France and Algeria. By employing literature as a tribunal for history and by constructing a memorial discourse dissonant with official historical narratives, these writers not only disrupt the public understanding of Franco-Algerian history, but also blame the French and Algerian governments for their personal or collective tragedies. The political charge is carried within the texts’ particular stories of exile and loss. The four narrators in their respective texts are like orphans of Algeria displaced in France mourning the double loss of the Algerian land and their father, who embodies the country of origin.

Cette étude a commencé par un intérêt et un questionnement portant sur la problématique du silence en tant qu'impossible à dire hégémonique. Le silence étant la conséquence d'un phénomène immotivé il se traduit en une impossibilité de décrire absolue qui peut résulter d'une expérience difficile comme un traumatisme, ou d'une expérience impossible comme celle de l'altérité inconcevable, et qu'on rassemblera sous la dénomination d'indicible. Le problème du pouvoir référentiel du langage et en corollaire du pouvoir de l'art est dès lors immédiatement mis en lumière. Si l'écriture, expression conceptuelle nécessairement symbolique, ne permet de parler de ce que l'on voit qu'au travers du prisme de sa pensée propre, alors les mots sont un outil inadapté à la complexité de la pensée de certaines expériences limites et notamment celle qui implique les questions d'altérité et en particulier la pensée animale. Les textes choisis pour cette étude sont présentés comme une tentative pour lutter contre les dérives anthropomorphiques et l'animal y tient donc une place de premier plan. De plus ces textes sont des tentatives d'autofiction, le moi étant comme l'animal incapable d'être saisi et capturé pour être mis en mots, il s'agit dès lors dans ces ouvrages de travailler sur les limites de l'autofiction et de parvenir à la renouveler, mais il s'agit aussi de faire reculer les limites de l'irreprésentable en mettant en lumière la possibilité même d'une telle saisie, d'une telle capture. Celle de l'animal mais aussi peut-être au travers ou avec elle celle du moi. Ainsi la question des limites des moyens de représentation au coeur de la problématique de l'écriture du moi rejoint la question que se pose Jacques Rancière quant au pouvoir de l'art en general mais surtout quant à son pouvoir de représenter ce que certains penseurs ont choisi d'appeler l' « irreprésentable ». L'animal en tant qu'il est à la fois semblable et tout autre se pose comme une figure centrale dans la problématique de la question de la représentation identitaire. Cependant, et c'est là le problème et la question que se pose cette étude, il s'agit de savoir s'il est possible de concilier cette approche de l'animal comme figure avec le refus de faire rentrer l'animal dans une démarche le réduisant à un contre exemple ou à une allégorie. C'est le pari des auteurs étudiés dans le travail qui constitue cette étude. Resumo:

French literary theorists Dominique Viart and Bruno Vercier identify the beginning of a new era for French literature in the 1980s, characterized by hypotheses, hesitations, and the general notion that truth and reality cannot be fully grasped by discourse. The 1980s can be considered as transitional for the comics medium as well. Art Spiegelman's Maus (first published in 1980, completed in 1991) demonstrated that comics are not only capable of representing difficult familial and historical pasts, but that visual narratives benefit from formal and aesthetic devices that are inherent to the ninth art's polysemiotic possibilities. In this dissertation, I study francophone comics in which a second- or third-generation individual seeks to understand a familial past that exceeds his or her personal experience and that has previously been silenced or repressed, either individually (by the primary witness) or collectively (by the political hegemony). In the research corpus, the narrator's search elicits modal and temporal intersectional spaces: representation and anti-representation in Chapter One, the past and the present in Chapter Two, the collective and the individual in Chapter Three, and the interplay between memory, history, and imagination in the concluding Chapter Four. In addition to an interdisciplinary theoretical framework, Viart's notion of insavoir [not-knowing] and Pierre Nora's concept of "sites of memory" act as overarching theoretical tools throughout the essay.

The thematic organization of intersectional spaces fosters the identification of recurrent devices as the individual discussions reinforce and nuance one another sequentially and retroactively. Aware of the inherent limitations of representation and the notion of cognitive insavoir, the authors of the research corpus attempt to communicate meaning instead of presupposing understanding or the ability to "know" a traumatic, violent, and repressed past (and the capability to represent such a history through text and image). Such recurrences are symptomatic of an emerging sub-category within the medium, wherein the figure of the intersection is pertinent and productive precisely because these works operate in multi-directional insavoir. Like novels in the literary era identified by Viart and Vericer, the resulting representations oppose binary thought, opting instead for narratives that are self-critical, uncomfortable, thought-provoking, and ultimately, perhaps, more true.

Although the interconnectedness of Russian and Arabic literatures has been examined by Soviet and Russian Arabists, their research remains largely unknown to Western comparativists. The mutual influence between these two literary traditions goes beyond mere literary translation while also transcending a straightforward bilateral relationship. Building on the ideas of David Damrosch, I summarize the impact of Maksim Gorky and his literary works on contemporary Arab literature. In the Arab world, Gorky remains one of the most popular and influential Soviet Russian writers, even legendary. There was a popular belief among Arabs that Gorky learned to read from the Russian translation of The Thousand and One Nights, even that the writer had Eastern origins. As one of the Russian writers most widely translated into Arabic, Gorky reappears in new translations even today. This chapter offers a brief critical review of his works translated into Arabic in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, followed by an examination of his influence on the Egyptian writer Khairy Shalabi (1938- 2011), and the Franco-Egyptian writer Albert Cossery (1913-2008). By including Francophone Arabic writing, I show the complex trajectory of Gorky’s influence on Arab literature and beyond.
