La politique artistique de Louis XIII n'a jusqu'à présent fait l'objet d'aucune étude,même partielle. Cette thèse vise donc à combler cette lacune de l'historiographie par un double travail de synthèse des connaissances actuelles et de recherche originale dans les archives parisiennes. Elle dégage les grandes structures du mécénat de Louis XIII : comportement du roi à l'égard des arts,influence du cardinal de Richelieu,organisation complexe des services des bâtiments,ensemble du personnel artistique travaillant pour le roi. Elle s'intéresse surtout à l'action de Louis XIII dans les nombreux champs d'action du mécénat royal : modifications architecturales et décorations des châteaux de la Couronne,protection accordée aux édifices religieux,contribution à l'urbanisme de la capitale,encouragement apporté aux métiers d'art. L'étude synthétique et les documents d'archives,parfois inédits,ont permis de montrer l'originalité,mais aussi l'importance décisive,de la politique artistique de Louis XIII dans la tradition du mécénat royal français,et de lui rendre ainsi sa place à côté des brillantes réalisations d'Henri IV et surtout de Louis XIV.

L'éducation des princes, illustrée par des noms célèbres, Bossuet ou Fénelon, semble de prime abord connue. Nombre de précepteurs ne sont toutefois jamais sortis de l'ombre et aucune étude d'ensemble, sur deux siècles, n'a jamais mis en perspective ces éducations dont l'objectif était de façonner un prince idéal. A la fin du XIXe siècle, les recherches entreprises parallèlement au développement de l'instruction publique ont laissé une image réductrice et partielle de cette éducation princière. L'histoire culturelle des élites et l'étude des cours ouvrent des champs nouveaux d'investigation. Les matières enseignées nécessitent une nouvelle approche et une relecture des sources s'impose. Ce travail apporte ainsi un éclairage neuf sur l'éducation de quarante-deux princes qui furent de futurs rois ou des chefs de famille tels que les Conti, Condé et Orléans. Que signifie " éduquer un prince " du XVII au XVIIIe siècle? Comment concevoir l'éducation d'un enfant appelé à devenir un Roi. Quelles vertus transmettre ? Quels savoirs et quels comportements permettent d'apprendre à gouverner ? Quels hommes choisir pour ces missions? De 1600 à 1789, les modèles humanistes, les plans d'étude des Collèges ou l'éducation aristocratique sont mis à profit dans le but de créer un modèle d'éducation princière fondé sur une hiérarchie des savoirs où l'histoire jouait un rôle fondamental. Restait à adapter ce modèle original à des modes de gouvernement chaque jour plus complexes. Cette thèse comporte trois volets: l'étude du personnel qui a la lourde tâche de façonner ce prince idéal, l'analyse des théories éducatives et des moyens mis en œuvre et la " fabrication " pratique d'un prince<br>The education of the princes as illustrated by famous names- Fénelon or Bossuet- would seem to be well known. Many tutors however are unknown and no overall study spanning the two centuries of their contribution to the education of an ideal prince has been carried out. At the end XIXth century, the research undertaken in parallel with the development of the state education gave a partial vision of the princes education. The cultural history of the elite and the study of the courses open new fields of investigation. The material taught require a new approach and a second reading of the sources is essential (manual written for the education, exercise books, works of dedication, instruments teaching). This work sheds new light on the education of forty-two princes who were future kings or heads of household such as Conti, Condé and Orleans. What does "to educate a prince" mean during the Modern Age? How can we understand the education of a future King? Which virtues are transmitted? What knowledge and behaviour are necessary to learn how to govern? Who should be chosen for these tasks? From 1610 to 1789, humanistics models, the study cursus in the Colleges or in aristocratic education were put to use with the aim of creating a model of education for the princes founded on a hierarchy of knowledge in which history played a fundamental role. The model needed to be adapted to ever more complex forms of government. This thesis is composed of three parts: a study of the personnel with the heavy task of raising an ideal prince, an analysis of the educational theories and the means used and the practical "making" of an idéal prince with regard to both his virtues and his manner

En 1631, Marie de Médicis (1573-1642), reine de France, opposée à la politique de Richelieu, quitte précipitamment le royaume pour trouver refuge à la cour de Bruxelles. Jusqu’à sa mort en 1642, elle ne réussit jamais, malgré maintes tentatives, à rentrer en France. Elle vit dans les Pays-Bas espagnols jusqu’en 1639, puis, après un bref passage dans les Provinces-Unies, à Londres jusqu’en 1641, pour finir ses jours à Cologne. Alors que la guerre de Trente ans déchire l’Europe, Marie de Médicis tisse des liens avec les princes, mais aussi avec d’autres émigrés français, tels que Gaston d’Orléans ou la duchesse de Chevreuse. A travers cette situation exceptionnelle, nous étudions les réseaux, officiels ou secrets, qui se font et se défont autour de ces émigrés. La mise en place des réseaux et leur bon fonctionnement sont assurés par des hommes, ambassadeurs, courtisans, serviteurs, qui ont chacun des profils et des ambitions différents. Leurs histoires individuelles permettent de restituer la logique organique de cet ensemble complexe et mouvant à travers lequel circulent des nouvelles. Celles-ci sont analysées du point de vue matériel de leur support et de leur acheminement, mais aussi en fonction de leur contenu, qui varie selon les circonstances et les tensions politiques du moment. La circulation et les mutations de l’information ont sur la diplomatie des incidences qu’il faut évaluer. De plus, elles reflètent des idées politiques et révèlent des codes, des symboles, des représentations et des comportements particuliers. La mise en scène de l’information devient alors un objet d’étude fondamental<br>In 1631, Mary de’ Médici (1573-1642), queen mother of the French king, opposed to Richelieu’s government, precipitately leaves the kingdom to find shelter at the court of Brussels. Until her death in 1642, she never succeeds, in spite of many attempts, to be allowed to come back to France. She lives in the Spanish Netherlands from 1631 to 1639. Then, after a short passage through the United Provinces, she stays in London until 1641, to move out again to Cologne, where she finally dies. Whereas the Thirty Years War tears Europe to pieces, Mary de’ Médici weaves bonds not only with foreign princes, but also with other French banned emigrants, such as Gaston of Orleans or the duchess of Chevreuse. The study of this outstanding situation reveals official or secret networks, which are built up and undone around those emigrants. The making and good working of those networks are ensured by a pool of ambassadors, courtiers, servants, who have various profiles and follow different purposes. By rebuilding the individual stories of these men, we can disclose the organic logic of this complex and moving party, in which the news arise and flow. We try to provide an analysis from the point of view of the material support and routing of information, but also according to its content, which may vary following the peculiar circumstances and political issues. The circulation and changes of the news affect the diplomatic deeds in a way that must be investigated and explained. Moreover, information, as a mirror of political thoughts, is reflecting codes, symbols, representations and behaviors. Therefore, the setting and showing of information can be seen as a significant matter for political studies

Louis XIII's reign has long garnered historians' and popular interest. The king of Cardinal Richelieu and the three musketeers, Louis is traditionally viewed as having presided over the development of the French state and facilitated the rise of absolutism. Yet his court has received comparatively little attention. Traditionally understood as the reflection of its master, Louis XIII's court has been assumed to be backwards and inconsequential. On the contrary, this thesis contends that Louis's court experienced substantial institutional development and expansion over the course of his rule. Neither Louis nor Richelieu was the principal instigator of this growth. The main drivers were the courtiers themselves who sought to expand their prerogatives and to find new ways of profiting from their offices. The changes that were initiated from the top down were not determined by a broad, sweeping agenda held by Louis or his minister-favourites but rather by immediate needs and contingencies. Cardinal Richelieu, nonetheless, recognised that Louis's court really mattered for high politics in this period: the royal households produced key players for the governance of the realm, either gravitating from court office to broader governmental office, or holding both simultaneously. Furthermore, Louis's court helped to bind the realm together, not just because it acted as a hub attracting people from the provinces but also because of the time it spent in the provinces. Richelieu, however, struggled to control this court — so vital to the direction of the French monarchy in this period — because its members were so active and vibrant. They shaped the cultural and social environment surrounding and associated with the court because they were heavily invested in the court as an institution. Indeed, the court did not only serve the needs of the monarch: courts could only operate because a large group of people had a stake in ensuring that they functioned. By establishing the importance of Louis XIII's court for the direction of the French monarchy, and his courtiers' role in moulding it, this thesis seeks to throw light on humans' fundamental relationship with power.

Mesurer l'absolu : voilà toute la force imprimée par les juristes de Louis XIII et de Richelieu à la monarchie qui ont contribué de manière significative à la construction de l'Etat par le droit. Les successeurs des Légistes et des Politiques ont précisé le fondement, le critère et l'étendue de l'absolu qu'ils se devaient désormais de mesurer. La souveraineté est au cœur du processus : elle est déployée sous la forme d'une véritable arme de combat. Dans une version défensive lors de la première partie de règne, elle conjugue l'unité et l'indépendance. Dès 1630, la souveraineté se charge d'un sens offensif en lien avec la radicalisation politique. La souveraineté interne poursuit alors son mouvement : à l'unité comme principe structurant est ajoutée l'indivisibilité comme contenu explicitement formulé. La souveraineté externe, pour sa part, change radicalement de visage : ce n'est plus la construction contre l'autre mais avoir des prétentions sur les autres Etats. Ce faisant, la souveraineté interne et externe se confondent dans une souveraineté-puissance plus que dans une souveraineté-liberté sachant qu'aujourd'hui, la première renvoie à l'ordre interne et la seconde à l'ordre international. Il faudra attendre 1648 et la conférence de Westphalie pour que les relations interétatiques soient marquées d'une volonté de stabilité. Autrement dit, si l'Etat a émergé contre les autres entités étatiques, il se consolidera avec celles-ci, dans un cadre pacifié. L'affirmation d'une souveraineté-puissance passe au préalable par la constitution d'une sorte de trinité civile composée du roi, désormais consolidé, de la souveraineté et de l'Etat<br>Measuring the absolute: it is through this concept that the jurists of Louis XIII and Richelieu significantly contributed to the elaboration of a State based on the rule of law. The successors of the Légistes and the Politiques defined the foundations, criteria and limits of this notion of absolute, which they now had to measure. Being at the heart of the process, sovereignty was used as a genuine weapon. Throughout the first half of the reign, sovereignty, in its defensive sense, combined both the ideas of unity and independence. However, as of 1630, sovereignty became more offensive in nature in response to political radicalisation. Internal sovereignty thus followed its course, explicitly adding the concept of indivisibility to the structuring principle of unity. External sovereignty, on the other hand, underwent major changes: self-construction could no longer rely solely on implicit differentiation with others and it now implied having claims over other States. In doing so, internal and external sovereignty merged into souveraineté-puissance more so than into souveraineté-liberté; bearing in mind that today, the former refers to internal affairs and the latter to foreign affairs. It was not until 1648 and the peace treaties of Westphalia that interstate relations manifested a desire of stability. In other words, if the State emerged against other State entities, it grew stronger alongside them, within a pacified context. En evoquant son francion, sorel parlait d'un stile comique et satyrique et designait ainsi un corpus de textes qui, sous la periode de louis xiii (1614-1643), compte les oeuvres romanesques de sorel lui-meme, theophile, du verdier, claireville, tristan et fortunatus, pour la veine comique ; pour la veine satirique, les oeuvres de barclay, mouchemberg, lannel et florinde. La these etudie l'ensemble de ce corpus et, apres l'avoir rapidement presente, se concentre sur la question langagiere. La premiere partie de l'etude s'interesse au rapport de l'homme au monde par le langage et note l'engagement des ecrivains dans le debat du mensonge et de la verite, de l'utilisation des codes et des allegories, des liens semiologiques entre les mots et les choses, pour aboutir a la conscience meta-langagiere des ecrivains. Aussi, est-on amene a considerer le langage comme procede specifiquement humain, et le rapport de l'homme a l'homme qu'il suscite. Successivement le langage est etudie dans son cadre anthropologique, puis dans son cadre relationnel (avec les problemes de la communication), ensuite comme moyen d'auto-representation humaine, et amene les auteurs a proner un langage therapeutique et organisateur social. Cette derniere prise de position conduit a analyser finalement les rapports langagiers de l'homme a la litterature. Les ecrivains comiques et satiriques se specifient alors par l'(anti)conformisme de leurs textes, sur lesquels ils reflechissent et qu'ils inflechissent selon leur evolution intellectuelle et sensible, comme le prouvent les avatars successifs du francion de sorel. Enfin, deja sous louis xiii, ce stile comique et satyrique sent la necessite de rechercher de nouveaux horizons formels et generiques, en abandonnant notamment une ecriture agonistique pour une ecriture laudative, et en entamant la recherche de nouveaux modeles referentiels comme base d'inspiration litteraire.

Analyse des donnees du journal ecrit par heroard, premier medecin de louis xiii, de 1601 a 1628, relatives a l'hygiene de vie du roi. Ces donnees, du fait de leur continuite, de leur homogeneite et de leur precision, constituent un fond documentaire unique. Regroupees par theme : rythmes de vie, hygiene corporelle, surveillance medicale quotidienne, dietetique, elles sont traduites en tableaux chronologiques et statistiques accompagnes de commentaires. Ce travail d'analyse est destine a faciliter la recherche historique dans ces domaines en contribuant pour partie a l'edition critique du journal<br>The analysis of the information written in the diary of heroard, the principal physician of louis xiii, from 1601 to 1628 regarding the preservation of the king's health. This information, thanks to its continuity, homogeneity and precision, forms a unique documentary basis of this period. Regrouped among categories : living patterns, personal hygiene, daily medical supervision, dietetics, these are recorded on chronological and statistical charts. The charts concerning alimentary hygiene lead to comments based on the quality, quantity and dietetics of louis xiii's nutrition. This analytical work is aimed at helping historical research forward into these fields by partly contributing to the critical edition of the diary
