Abstract This symposium was sponsored primarily by the Commercial Horticulture Working Group in the Extension Division of ASHS. The International Horticultural Congress provides an excellent opportunity for horticulturists, especially horticultural educators, from around the world to exchange experiences and ideas. Extension in the context of this symposium refers to the transfer of technology or the linkage from a research-based information pool to producers, processors, marketers, and consumers of horticultural commodities. Extension programs are expected to help ensure the adoption of appropriate technologies by individuals, groups, or segments of an industry. The primary goals of an extension program are to increase production, product quality, business profits, and/or the quality of life. This symposium involved uniquely qualified individuals in describing and contrasting model extension delivery systems from around the world.

The IPHS conference in Yokohama demonstrates that the history of planning is in rude health. The discipline now includes the histories of planning around the world, and scholars from many different countries are reflecting deeply on their own and each other's experiences. Planners, the institutes they work in, the evolution and transmission of their ideas and of course their application and success or failure are now considered from a multitude of regional and disciplinary perspectives. The vitality of these debates in the twenty-first-century global urban world holds much promise that historical study can contribute to understanding some of the challenges facing contemporary cities.

Women have made significant inroads into politics in recent years, but in many parts of the world, their increased engagement has spurred attacks, intimidation, and harassment intended to deter their participation. This book provides the first comprehensive account of this phenomenon, exploring how women came to give these experiences a name—violence against women in politics—and lobby for its increased recognition by citizens, states, and international organizations. Drawing on research in multiple disciplines, the volume resolves lingering ambiguities regarding its contours by arguing that violence against women in politics is not simply a gendered extension of existing definitions of political violence privileging physical aggressions against rivals. Rather, it is a distinct phenomenon involving a broad range of harms to attack and undermine women as political actors. Incorporating a wide range of country examples, the book illustrates what this violence looks like in practice, catalogues emerging solutions around the world, and considers how to document this phenomenon more effectively. Highlighting its implications for democracy, human rights, and gender equality, the volume concludes that tackling violence against women in politics requires ongoing dialogue and collaboration to ensure women’s equal rights to participate—freely and safely—in political life around the globe.

In this chapter, the author reflects on the performative work that academics do in conference rooms and other spaces of academic performance. The chapter investigates the stark and sometimes harsh differences between research and (self)presentation performances and what happens in more private spaces by using an autobiographic approach. The chapter recounts a narrative based on the author’s experience with microaggressions as a visibly non-white and non-European woman researcher in conference spaces in the Global North. The narrative revolves around multiple experiences of everyday microaggressions and how (a sense of) belonging, and the allocation of time, space, and objects in institutional spaces of performance as its extension is often reserved for those who are considered insiders and ‘kins,’ namely white and mostly Western European academics.

The importance of educating language teachers to develop their competence in using technology for teaching purposes has been well established in the literature, but the reality is that many teachers around the world have been forced to educate themselves with little or no formal training. The Internet has opened up opportunities for individuals from all over the world to learn. With the use of Social Networking Sites (SNSs), language teachers are now able to connect with other like-minded teachers and support each other regardless of their geographic location and/or financial situation. Despite the increased number of online language teacher communities forming on these platforms, much remains unknown when it comes to how language teachers actually make use of such communities to learn about technology. Hence, the current mixed-methods longitudinal study investigated the role of online communities on SNSs for supporting language teachers who are using technology in their classes. The main data collection methods employed in the study were: (1) a content analysis of the posts shared in a Facebook community which consists of over 1000 online community members during the two-year observation period (i.e., October 2018 – September 2020), a questionnaire to understand the members’ backgrounds and experiences in the community, and semi-structured interviews with the questionnaire respondents to obtain an in-depth understanding of their views about being a community member. The findings will be discussed in terms of the benefits and issues of using Facebook communities as a source of professional and emotional support.

This chapter traces the emergence of a new brand of corporate diversity politics which, rather than requiring queer subjects to appear ‘virtually normal’ (Drucker, 2015), actually addresses them in their difference. I examine the emergence of queer difference as something that adds value not simply to the corporation but to the entrepreneurial queer self. The chapter documents fieldwork experiences at corporate LGBTQ+ networking events and, in particular, at the London chapter of the Lesbians Who Tech conference, a networking event catering to lesbian and queer women working in the world of tech. I argue that such events enshrine the neoliberal reconfiguration not only of queer labour but of queer life itself: the social, affective, inter-personal relations around which queer organizing unfolds. Ultimately, rallying queer people’s aspirations in capitalist economies, I argue that queer and lesbian tech CEOs and the corporate LGBTQ+ networking events that spawn them should be read as part of broader CEO-ization of the LGBTQ+ movement, whose interests have become increasingly aligned with those of corporations.

Abstract On The Second weekend of November in 1995, Rabbi Capers Funnye hosted a momentous meeting at his synagogue on Chicago’s south side. He and a small group of other black Jews from around the country gathered there for a twoday conference to launch a new national organization. Funnye had met many of his visitors two years earlier at a symposium on black Jews sponsored by the California African-American Museum in Los Angeles.1 They had remained in close contact since then, frequently lamenting their shared sense of isolation-but also contemplating their tremendous possibilities-in a society where hostility between blacks and Jews was widely viewed as the natural state of affairs. This weekend was the culmination of their ongoing conversations. The main idea was simply to have a kind of national coming out-a “Black Jews’ debutante ball;’ as Funnye put it-to tell the world that being black and being Jewish were not mutually exclusive.2 Funnye and his guests hoped to establish a permanent forum in which black Jews could simply find each other, share their experiences, and begin to foster a sense of common identity. The mere existence of such a group, they believed, would defy the prevailing notion that Jews were all white people of European descent. It would also challenge the conventional wisdom that blacks and Jews were mutually antagonistic, for that perception, while certainly not without some grains of truth, was based on the erroneous assumption that the two groups were entirely separate.

Significant industry developments over the past decade have placed concrete ageing at the forefront of life extension decisions related to nuclear power plants. Recent issues encountered include alkali–silica reactivity in concrete, delamination events, larger than anticipated loss of pre-stressing force, spent fuel pool leakage, corrosion of steel reinforcement in water intakes, and others. Concrete structures at nuclear power plants are being asked to perform for longer periods than originally design life. Utilities around the world are investigating plant service life extensions (with 60 years or more total being a quoted target), and for some projects delayed construction schedules, and/or decommissioning strategies that involve the use of containment as a “safe store” for periods of up to 100 years, mean that containment buildings and other concrete structures often have to perform their functions for a time period significantly greater than their initial design life. Newer plants are designed with design lives of 60 years or more. Concrete is a durable material and its performance as part of the containment function in NPPs has been good. However, experience shows that ageing degradation of concrete structures, often caused or accelerated by factors such as faulty design, use of unsuitable or poor quality materials, improper construction, exposure to aggressive environments, excessive structural loads, and accident conditions, can impair its safety functions and increase risks to public health and safety. Effective ageing management of concrete containment buildings and other concrete structures is therefore required to ensure their fitness-for-service throughout the plant service life and during decommissioning. The paper presented will present current International Atomic Energy Agency activities in the area of concrete structures and ageing management, and point to where guidelines and best practises related to concrete structure ageing management, relevant operating experience, and applicable codes and standards may be located.

Digital revolution, pandemics, market-orientation, and massification in higher education, as well globalization – a worldwide challenge in economics, politics, societal structures, and health systems – completely changes the “age landscape” in universities. Over the last 20 years, universities around the world have seen an increase in the number of non-traditional or mature-age students and are facing complex and challenging problems. In the literature these “non-traditional” in terms of age students are called mature-age students (by some scholars also second chancers, independent students, adult learners). Social inclusion equation is highly complex concept, including variables as class, ethnicity, gender, age, subject of study, location etc. In this article, we will focus specifically on the age of students as a variable of social inclusion. The article is motivated by the aim to find out what are the challenges faced by mature-age students in the context of social inclusion to ensure equal opportunities. Purposive sampling is being used, participants with “intensive” experience – 4 master-level students in the age from 40 to 49 from two Universities in Latvia and one University of United States of America. Individual, semi structured, in-depth interviews as a data collection method is being used. Narrative analysis has been chosen as an extension of the interpretive approach within the social sciences. The study concludes that the most significant group of challenges related to the age of students, both in Latvia and in the US, are socio-emotional challenges. Three out of four respondents have experienced emotions such as “feeling like old people, pressure, uncomfortable, rusty, behind”. The inclusion of mature-age students should be on the university agenda, alongside other social equity issues in higher education.

Project failure has become a global phenomenon in the built environment. Failures recorded on construction projects can be linked to various issues depending on the nature of the project, the synergy of the professional project team and external stakeholders. Also, external factors beyond the project team's control can lead to project failure. Given the different causes of project failure experienced globally, this study seeks to review project failure on monumental construction projects across the world. To achieve this, the study adopted an extensive review of literature to assess the causes of the failures recorded on the focused projects. The study also synthesised the different causes of failures recorded to project lessons learnt from the failed projects. Findings of the study revealed that lack of project planning before the inception of these projects and inadequate risk assessment contributed largely to the failures recorded on these projects.

Resumo:
Abstract The transport industry is currently responsible for around a quarter of GHG emissions worldwide, with a forecasted increased share for the next coming years. The rail industry is one of the most energy efficient and less polluting transport mode. In European Union (E.U.), for instance, the rail sector currently accounts for 1.5% of E.U. transport GHG emissions, with over 8.5% of total market share, while on the United States (U.S.), it accounts for 1.9% of transport GHG emissions (0.6% for freight railroads, with a share of around 40% of long distance freight volumes, in a ton-mile basis). Despite this remarkable environmental and energetic performance, the rail sector is also strongly committed with the compromise of a continuous reduction of its specific GHG emissions, for both the passenger (passenger-km) and freight (tone-km) services, to comply with the world effort, to keep the overall increase in average global temperature below 2 °C, compared to pre-industrial levels. One of the main strategies to reach these ambitious targets is to increase the rail electrification share, with the massive use of electric powertrains, with their inherent improved efficiency and zero local emission performance, compared to the internal combustion engines powered counterparts. The conventional rail electrification, based on a third-rail or overhead line, might be cost and environmental effective for city and inter-city intensively used routes. However, secondary lines and regional routes, lack the required traffic density for conventional electrification, given the high infrastructure costs required. In this context, alternative rail electrification routes, such as the use of Battery Electric Rail (BER) powertrains, have been seen as a promising electrification alternative to comply with rail industry compromises, to reduce its GHG share and efforts to improve energy efficiency, especially in the low density traffic rail segments. It is noteworthy that alternative rail powertrains have launched the debate around traction technology selection for rail fleet renewal, given the average 30 year lifetime of rail equipment, which ultimately require immediate policies and actions to guarantee the long term rail environmental and efficiency targets. In the E.U., BER has been evaluated as alternatives for non electrified low density rail segments (mainly for inter-regional passenger transport), with extensions in the 40–80 km range, given the medium term strategic decision to ban the diesel powertrains, currently used on Diesel Multiple Units (DMU). In the rail freight segment, there are some U.S. preliminary BER initiatives, focused on both shunt/switch locomotives (given their low power and range requirements, compared to road locomotives), and even line-haul locomotives, the later with a limited potential, given their large power and range requirements. However, prior to the widespread use of BER, there are some challenges to be taken up, such as battery technologies improvement (basically the battery chemistry, to meet the harsh rail operational requirements), charging infrastructure, sustainable electricity cost and availability, as well as operational impacts (such as the required charging intervals and the use of battery tender cars on rail productivity). This work presents an unbiased assessment of battery rail technology (for both the passenger and freight sectors), based on the state of the art technical sources, with a focus on battery technology and infrastructure topics, weighted against rail operational requirements. Finally, there are presented some case studies, with BER experiences and prototypes, showing preliminary BER outcomes, followed by the technological and operational challenges to be faced, prior to its commercial use in specific rail niche segments.

<p>A much-improved type of flexible plug expansion joint has been developed, with a polyurethane surface, which offers a number of substantial advantages over the traditional bituminous type. The <i>Polyflex®Advanced PU </i>expansion joint offers all the benefits of the asphaltic plug joint, including smooth, safe, low-noise surface, great adaptability and easy installation. However, it overcomes numerous disadvantages and challenges that have always plagued asphaltic plug joints. It offers greatly improved strength, elasticity and durability, resulting in much less maintenance and far more reliable watertightness. The joint’s material offers consistent behaviour at both high and low temperatures, and excellent resistance against rutting. And installation is also far easier and less prone to error, with the two-component compound being mixed at ambient temperatures. For these reasons and others, this joint should be considered for use in bridge construction and, in particular, in bridge maintenance – as demonstrated by successful experience around the world in very varying climates and environments. This paper covers the extensive testing conducted at several independent testing institutes and the significant features and benefits of the system, and presents sample installations.</p>

Introduction. Leisure is considered important in the settlement and acculturation experiences of refugee and immigrant communities. Perceiving a gap in the literature which has taken a diaspora perspective, this on-going study looks at an online community converging around a leisure activity from a gender and diaspora standpoint, while looking to understand what would be experienced as information in that context. Method. Employing a qualitative research approach, data was obtained through semi-structured interviews with fourteen participants and also through the collecting of comments posted on fan fiction blogs. Analysis. Qualitative thematic analysis is being carried out using Nvivo software. Results. Early observations by way of themes lend credence to the importance of social context and point towards the role of meaning making in the information and document experience of the participants. Conclusions. Going beyond information seeking and problematic situations, adopting an experience approach can contribute towards conceptual and theoretical development in the field. The study also hopes to contribute towards literature that has looked at diaspora communities from a gender and leisure perspective.

Abstract The Papua New Guinea Liquefied Natural Gas (PNG LNG) project is a joint venture with participation by ExxonMobil, Oil Search Limited (OSL), Kumul Petroleum, Santos, JX Nippon Oil and Gas Exploration and Mineral Resources Development Company, and began production in 2014. As described in a previous IPC paper, the project, operated by ExxonMobil PNG Limited (EMPNG) sustained a M7.5 earthquake and approximately 300 aftershocks in 2018, epicentered directly under key facilities. Around 150 km of high-pressure gas and condensate pipelines in the rugged PNG highlands were affected but did not lose containment or pressure. Immediately following the M7.5 event, EMPNG began efforts to assess and inspect the pipelines in order to ensure public safety, and, at the appropriate time, restore LNG production. The technical efforts took place along the pipeline Right of Way (ROW) in a remote jungle environment, which, following the earthquake, was also a disaster zone in which the few available resources were prioritized towards humanitarian relief. Due to resource constraints, the pipeline field inspection team typically numbered only two or three specialists. The inspection team drew heavily on analysis work, ongoing since project startup in 2014 and in progress when the earthquake occurred, that simulated the condition of the ROW and pipe stress state following earthquake events similar in magnitude to what actually occurred. The body of existing analysis work allowed the field team to compare aerially observed ROW ground movements to previously modeled cases, and rapidly infer pipe stress state without actually measuring pipe deformation on the ground. Due to resource constraints, that latter activity, if required before startup, would have significantly delayed project restart. The worldwide network of technical resources that had been assisting with ongoing simulations was quickly re-directed to analyzing actual observed ground deformations, efficiently supporting the small field team from outside the disaster zone. After restart, field inspection activities continued, observations were categorized, and an Earthquake Recovery (EQR) organization was initiated to execute ROW repairs. Just as the initial inspection work was aided by pre-earthquake analyses, EQR activities have been expedited by the extensive ROW maintenance program that had been ongoing prior to the earthquake. This paper and accompanying oral presentation present details of the inspection and recovery, and show that the extensive simulations, preparations and maintenance programs supported by EMPNG during project operations prior to the earthquake enabled a rapid and efficient response when the earthquake actually occurred, and thus provided enormous value to the business.

Abstract Well clean-up is one of the most complex operations performed at the wellsite today. During clean-up, a well is flowing for the first time after initial completion or workover operations through temporary surface facilities to either conduct a welltest or to simply condition the well before connecting it to production facilities. Currently, there are no practical recommendations available that would summarize clean-up experiences and guide operating companies through the process of efficiently planning well clean-up operations. Conventional well clean-up operations are inherently challenging owing to the requirements for accurate data measurements, safe handling and disposal of produced fluids (hydrocarbons, completion brine, water, and solids). Experience has shown that it is nearly impossible to perform well clean up within pre-defined constraints and target criteria without an appropriate design, equipment selection and operations planning to account for the specificities of each situation. Steady-state flow simulators have been the standard tool to model pressure and temperature changes along the wellbore and through temporary production system during well clean-up process. Those assume either final stabilized conditions or a limited number of intermediate ones and formed the basis for equipment selection. But this approach has critical limitations in modelling flowing well behavior and fast-changing flowing conditions, and therefore in assessing operational flow assurance risks and the dynamic capability of the surface plant to handle produced fluids. The paper describes in detail today's challenges during well clean-up operations that combine the need for operational safety, minimal environmental footprint and flow assurance considerations that have to be balanced with costs and production performance optimization. The paper provides practical recommendations and presents multiple case studies highlighting the results and lessons learned from applying a novel, unique workflow based on the application of a transient-multiphase flow simulator. Combined with modern well-testing equipment such as modern test separators, remotely actuated adjustable chokes or environmentally friendly fluid disposal techniques, such advanced design allows performing clean-up operations efficiently while remaining within time, rates, pressure or emissions limits.

This paper describes a new concept and experiences of a distributed interdisciplinary learning programme for students across continents. The aim is to provide students with a truly Global Intercultural Project Experience (GIPE) by working together with peers from around the world, and solving real-life client’s problems. We have received seed-funding for four annual projects to engage students from Germany (Europe), Namibia (Africa), Indonesia (Asia), and Peru (Latin-America). In 2020, 30 students from four continents engaged in a one-semester distributed software development project for a Namibian client. Despite Covid-19 they successfully completed the project expressing deep appreciation for the learning opportunities overcoming challenges of working across wide-spread time zones, cultures, changing requirements, and various technical challenges. Considering the vast learning benefits, we suggest to incorporate such projects in all tertiary education curricula across the globe.

The service life of offshore installations is limited by its structural integrity. Furthermore the structural integrity is mainly governed by the fatigue resistance of critical welded details. In a FPSO installation these details are among others pallet stools weld joints to deck structure and bulkheads/web frames weld connections to longitudinal in ballast tanks. ultrasonic peening can improve the fatigue resistance of welded joints. Fatigue test results shows an increase of four times for high stress ranges and up to ten times for high cycle fatigue. For specimens which have already consumed half of their fatigue life the treatment resets the clock to zero, as a minimum value. Consequently ultrasonic peening treatment was applied to several offshore installations on fatigue sensitive weld connections with the objective to extend the service life of the these. Finite Element Analysis carried out by classification societies for these offshore structures demonstrated critical fatigue lives for several weld connections. These weld connections were then treated by ultrasonic peening with the objective to extend their fatigue lives and by doing that reach the targeted service life for the installation. The successful application of the ultrasonic peening treatment was a pioneering work which involved several partners. A pilot project on a FPSO started in 2005 and the treated critical weld connections are still intact and show not sign of crack initiation despite the fact the calculations then showed shorter fatigue lives than the life span already consumed. As a result the same ultrasonic peening procedure has been proposed to be applied for other fatigue sensitive locations on the installation. Offshore installations around the world are reaching their original design life. Most of the operators chose to extend the service life of their assets rather than scrape them and build new. The reasons for that are: improved oil recovering techniques, time required to get a new build installation on site, environment concerns, wiser management of energy and resources among others. Therefore the Life Extension of Offshore Installations is a subject of current interest for the upstream industry.
