My intention is to analyze how, where and if grid computing technology is truly enabling a new way of doing science (so-called ‘e-science’). I will base my views on the experiences accumulated thus far in a number of scientific communities, which we have provided with the opportunity of using grid computing. I shall first define some basic terms and concepts and then discuss a number of specific cases in which the use of grid computing has actually made possible a new method for doing science. I will then present a case in which this did not result in a change in research methods. I will try to identify the reasons for these failures and analyze the future evolution of grid computing. I will conclude by introducing and commenting the concept of ‘cloud computing’, the approach offered and provided by major industrial actors (Google/IBM and Amazon being among the most important) and what impact this technology might have on the world of research.

A recent discovery in computer and software sciences is that information in general is a deterministic abstract quantity rather than a probability-based property of the nature. Information is a general form of abstract objects represented by symbolical, mathematical, communication, computing, and cognitive systems. Therefore, information science is one of the contemporary scientific disciplines collectively known as abstract sciences such as system, information, cybernetics, cognition, knowledge, and intelligence sciences. This paper presents the cognitive foundations, mathematical models, and formal properties of information towards an extended theory of information science. From this point of view, information is classified into the categories of classic, computational, and cognitive information in the contexts of communication, computation, and cognition, respectively. Based on the three generations of information theories, a coherent framework of contemporary information is introduced, which reveals the nature of information and the fundamental principles of information science and engineering.

A vessel monitoring system (VMS) is responsible for real-time vessel movement tracking. At sea, most of the tracking systems use satellite communications, which have high associated costs. This leads to a less frequent transmission of data, which reduces the reliability of the vessel location. Our research work involves the creation of an edge computing approach on a local VMS, creating an intelligent process that decides whether the collected data needs to be transmitted or not. Only relevant data that can indicate abnormal behavior is transmitted. The remaining data is stored and transmitted only at ports when communication systems are available at lower prices. In this research, we apply this approach to a fishing control process increasing the data collection process from once every 10 min to once every 30 s, simultaneously decreasing the satellite communication costs, as only relevant data is transmitted in real-time to the competent central authorities. Findings show substantial communication savings from 70% to 90% as only abnormal vessel behavior is transmitted. Even with a data collection process of once every 30 s, findings also show that the use of more stable fishing techniques and fishing areas result in higher savings. The proposed approach is assessed as well in terms of the environmental impact of fishing and potential fraud detection and reduction.

Today’s computing is based on the classic paradigm proposed by John von Neumann, three-quarters of a century ago. That paradigm, however, was justified for (the timing relations of) vacuum tubes only. The technological development invalidated the classic paradigm (but not the model!). It led to catastrophic performance losses in computing systems, from the operating gate level to large networks, including the neuromorphic ones. The model is perfect, but the paradigm is applied outside of its range of validity. The classic paradigm is completed here by providing the “procedure” missing from the “First Draft” that enables computing science to work with cases where the transfer time is not negligible apart from the processing time. The paper reviews whether we can describe the implemented computing processes by using the accurate interpretation of the computing model, and whether we can explain the issues experienced in different fields of today’s computing by omitting the wrong omissions. Furthermore, it discusses some of the consequences of improper technological implementations, from shared media to parallelized operation, suggesting ideas on how computing performance could be improved to meet the growing societal demands.

Remote sensing (RS) image processing can be converted to an optimization problem, which can then be solved by swarm intelligence algorithms, such as the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm, to improve the accuracy of the results. However, such optimization algorithms often result in a heavy computational burden. To realize the intrinsic parallel computing ability of ABC to address the computational challenges of RS optimization, an improved multiagent (MA)-based ABC framework with a reduced communication cost among agents is proposed by utilizing MA technology. Two types of agents, massive bee agents and one administration agent, located in multiple computing nodes are designed. Based on the communication and cooperation among agents, RS optimization computing is realized in a distributed and concurrent manner. Using hyperspectral RS clustering and endmember extraction as case studies, experimental results indicate that the proposed MA-based ABC approach can effectively improve the computing efficiency while maintaining optimization accuracy.

The advancement of science and technology of the impact on every field, changing the mode of transmission of information, the advent of big data for promotion and dissemination of resources played their part, let more and more people benefit. In the context of cloud computing, big data ushered in another upsurge of development and growth. Given this, the live broadcast training platform, which focuses on enterprise staff training and network education, arises at the right moment. People favor its convenience, real-time performance, and high efficiency. However, the low-value density of big data and cloud computing’s security problem has difficulties constructing a live broadcast training platform. In this paper, the live broadcast training platform’s structure is improved by constructing three modules: the live training module based on cloud computing, the user recommendation module based on big data, and the security policy guarantee module. In addition, to ensure that the trainees can receive training anytime and anywhere, this paper uses wireless communication technology to ensure the quality and speed of all users’ live video sources.

Conventional electronic Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) accelerators focus on architecture design and numerical computation optimization to improve the training efficiency. However, these approaches have recently encountered bottlenecks in terms of energy efficiency and computing performance, which leads to an increase interest in photonic accelerator. Photonic architectures with low energy consumption, high transmission speed and high bandwidth have been considered as an important role for generation of computing architectures. In this paper, to provide a better understanding of optical technology used in ANN acceleration, we present a comprehensive review for the efficient photonic computing and communication in ANN accelerators. The related photonic devices are investigated in terms of the application in ANNs acceleration, and a classification of existing solutions is proposed that are categorized into optical computing acceleration and optical communication acceleration according to photonic effects and photonic architectures. Moreover, we discuss the challenges for these photonic neural network acceleration approaches to highlight the most promising future research opportunities in this field.

Purpose – This paper aims to examine the types of cloud computing, models, characteristics, descriptions, applications, considerations for use and benefits of the following technologies to library users. Cloud computing has taken libraries in Kenya by storm. Because of this, many libraries do not know what to do. They are at cross-roads. They lack policies to govern them. However, the recent realization by information professionals that cloud computing has a critical role to play in the provision of information services has created a desire to effectively harness and manage them for scholarly communication. Design/methodology/approach – The research reviewed previous studies on the topic by examining both electronic and print information resources available in the libraries and internet. Findings – The findings revealed that libraries in Kenya are yet to fully embrace cloud computing in their operations. There are mixed feelings by librarians on the degree at which they should integrate these technologies in their service provisions. However, there is a positive progress toward this noble venture. Research limitations/implications – Kenya as a developing nation has limited local content on the subject. The study established that some of the available literature is restricted by intellectual property rights. This forced the researcher to rely heavily on foreign literature for the study. Practical implications – Appreciation of emerging cloud computing technologies by libraries is inevitable for the sustainability and management of modern libraries. Cloud computing makes libraries more competitive by adequately meeting user’s technological needs. This study will also act as a benchmark for the Government of Kenya to improve the current information communication technology (ICT) national policy. Social implications – Apart from revolutionalizing library operations and delivery of services, cloud computing will tremendously revolutionize the social-cultural and communication landscape of the society. Originality/value – The paper provides vital information and insights into how libraries are embracing cloud computing in the provision and dissemination of varied information services to library users.

Purpose – This paper aims to investigate the extent to which social networking tools had an impact on academics’ patterns of informal scholarly communication in humanities and social science disciplines. Social networking tools, reinforced by proliferation and advances in portable computing and wireless technologies, have reshaped how information is produced, communicated and consumed. Design/methodology/approach – A cross-institutional quantitative study utilized an online questionnaire survey sent to 382 academics affiliated with humanities and social science disciplines in two different academic institutions: one that belongs to a Western tradition of scholarly communication in Ireland, and the other to a developing country in Oman. Descriptive interpretation of data compared findings from both universities. Frequencies, percentages and means were displayed in tables to enhance the meaning of collected data. Inferential analysis was also conducted to determine statistical significance. Findings – Overall findings indicate progressive use of social networking tools for informal scholarly communication. There is perceived usefulness on the impact of social networking tools on patterns of informal scholarly communication. However, nearly one-third of the respondents have never used social networking tools for informal scholarly communication. Institution-based data comparison revealed no significant differences on data except for few activities of informal scholarly communication. Research limitations/implications – Given that the number of study subjects was eventually small (total = 382) and that academics by their very nature are disinclined to respond to online surveys, results of the study may suggest non-response errors, and these may impact negatively on the acceptability of inferences and statistical conclusions. The results of the study are, therefore, unlikely to be useful for generalization, but they remain suggestive of a growing tendency among humanities and social sciences’ academics to use social networking tools for informal scholarly communication. Originality/value – Empirical findings provide a broad understanding about the potential of social networking tools on informal scholarly communication in areas of humanities and social sciences disciplines. Multi-disciplinary investigation and qualitative studies may further deepen our understanding of the impact of social networking tools on patterns of scholarly communication.

Due to generally limited computing capability of an individual robot, cloud-based robotic systems are increasingly used. However, applications in large-scale multi-robot systems will be hindered by communication congestion and consequent lack of computing resources. In this study, an intern-sufficient cloud is investigated to alleviate the burden of communication and thus support more robots. At the same time, it enables heterogeneously idle computing resources of robots inside the system to be shared on demand, instead of relying on cloud servers and communication infrastructures, to make the scope of application wider. To this end, a hierarchical communication mechanism and a resource schedule algorithm are proposed. In the mechanism, the transmission power, signal-to-noise ratio, available bandwidth, and other relevant features are taken into account to estimate link quality for data transmission. Then, the constrained communication conditions and heterogeneous computing resources are balanced by the resource scheduling algorithm, so that the most appropriate computing resources of the robots are contributed to the mobile cloud. Furthermore, a multitarget navigation task is applied on the cloud to validate the work. Thereby, simulations and experiments are performed. The results show that the proposed intern-sufficient cloud can provide stable resources of communication and computation for a multi-robot system with 20 physical robots while achieving more effective multitarget navigation.

Abstract 5th Generation (5G) mobile system is expected to support the requirements of mission critical communications for ultra reliability and availability, and very low latency. With the development of messaging and data transfer in mobile networks, mission critical communication users see more and more potential in data communications. In this paper, we explore the capabilities of Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) that appears to be a key 5G component, to provide short messaging service at the network edge. The provided use cases illustrate the capabilities for transferring mobile originating and mobile terminating short messages to and from mission critical mobile edge applications. The data model describes the service resource structure and the Application Programming Interface definitions illustrate how the mobile edge applications can use the service. Some implementation aspects related to behavioral logic of the network and applications are provided. The performance analysis enables estimation of latency introduced by the service.

As the computing capacity of existing mobile devices cannot fully meet the needs of users for communication quality, a computing resource allocation strategy for 5G communication in the Internet of Things (IoT) environment is proposed by applying UAV-assisted edge computing. First, a system model is constructed with the UAV deployed with mobile edge computing (MEC) servers to provide assisted computing services for multiple users on the ground. Based on the optimization of the UAV trajectory, communication scheduling, and the energy consumption model of the UAV, the problem of the total computational cost minimization is formulated. Then, the genetic algorithm is improved by introducing a penalty function to solve this problem, in which selection, crossover, and mutation operations are iterated to obtain the optimal allocation strategy for computational resources. Finally, a simulation platform is constructed to analyze the proposed method. The results show that the total cost and total time of the proposed strategy are better than other comparison strategies.

Although parallel computing is used in the existing numerical solutions ofN-body problem, tons of communications betweenNparticles render the parallel efficiency extremely low. Despite the fact that domain decomposition based on short-range interaction is used, whenNis exceedingly large and lots of communications exist between particles in adjacent areas, the parallel efficiency remains terribly low. This paper puts forward adjacent zero communication parallel cloud computing method forN-body problem with short-range interaction domain decomposition. According to this method, the adjacent subblock data are exchanged and redundantly stored without acquiring data from other subblocks in the parallel processing, so the waiting time for data transmission can be saved and hence the parallel processing efficiency can be enhanced substantially.

Abstract: Across the world in our day-to-day life, we come across various medical inaccuracies caused due to unreliable patient’s reminiscence. Statistically, communication problems are the most significant aspect that hampers the diagnosis of patient’s diseases. So, this paper represents the best theoretical solution to achieve patient care in the most adequate way. In these pandemic days, the communication gap between the patient and the physician has begun to decline to a nominal level. This paper demonstrates a vital solution and a steppingstone to the complete digitalization of the client’s illness catalogue. To attain the solution in a specified manner we are using adverse pre-existential technologies like data warehousing, database management system, cloud computing, big data, etc. We also persistently maintain the most secure, impenetrable infrastructure enabling the client’s data privacy.
