Resumo:

This study describes a research focused on science teachers’ evaluation of natural science literacy of research and comprehension competence in their students. Natural science literacy of research and comprehension competence is defined as an essential part of science literacy – as a competence to find, evaluate and use science knowledge stored on the Internet (as a part of extended memory) to solve a problem in a science class and to construct students’ own science knowledge. Online science literacy was defined in terms of the following aspects: basic skills (which include computer basics, web searching basics, and general navigation basics), locating information, finding a suitable website, locating the information on the website, critically evaluating the information according to its reliability and according to its relevance for the science class assessment. The data were collected through a 53-item Likert – scale questionnaire. The items were adopted from the TICA questionnaire for assessing students’ general online reading competence. Science teachers from 5 different levels of pre-university education assessed their students’ online science literacy in order to evaluate their students’ competence to use the Internet as a storage and as a source of knowledge for teaching/learning process in the science class, to re-evaluate their online teaching practice and the need for implementation of natural science literacy of research and comprehension competence in their science curriculum. Resumo:

Through the design and exploratory evaluation of a narrative-based 360-video virtual reality experience, the authors aimed at building empathy in adults towards children who experience challenges in early literacy. This contributes to a limited literature on VR empathetic design by specifically studying caregivers in relation to reading difficulties and utilizing a low-cost immersive medium. This research performed a quasi-experimental pilot study following a pretest-posttest design with 27 participants, collecting measures such as participant empathy, anxiety, immersion, and emotional reactions. This paper explored changes in pre-post measures, correlations between variables, and possible explanations for the observed results. The VR experience increased positive caregiver attitudes towards struggling readers. Participants who reported a high degree of emotional reactions showed increased willingness to donate to help reading difficulties. Participants with teaching experience or with lower starting empathy scores were less likely to be affected.

Collaboration between teachers constitutes an important predictor for the successful implementation of digital media in schools and teaching. The present contribution examines the supporting conditions of ICT (information and communications technology)-related teacher collaboration as a feature of school quality in six selected European educational systems on the basis of the instruments and data administered by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement’s study of ICILS 2013 (International Computer and Information Literacy Study 2013). Along the ICILS 2013 theoretical framework, predictors on the level of the school and classroom, antecedents regarding teachers’ attitudes and competencies, variables concerning processes at school and in class, as well as teachers’ background variables, are analysed. The regression analysis shows no consistent differences regarding the coefficients of different predictors with respect to ICT-related collaboration in the countries where teachers have expressed a high, medium or low rate of agreement with ICT-related collaboration.

The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of introduction of the physical computing strategy of Arduino Boards in a program design course on coding literacy and the effectiveness of the application in technical high school students. This study selected two classes of twelfth-grade students enrolled in a program design course at a technical high school in Southern Taiwan as the samples. One class was the control group (43 students), and the other was the experimental group (42 students). During the 18-week course, the control group carried out a DBL (design-based learning) programming project, and the experimental group carried out the DBL programming project using the physical computing strategy of Arduino boards. Pre- and posttests and a questionnaire survey were carried out, while ANCOVA (analysis of covariance) was used for evaluation purposes. In the course, students in the experimental group were randomly selected for semi-structured interviews to understand their learning status and to perform qualitative analysis and summarization. This study proposed the physical computing strategy of Arduino boards, featuring staged teaching content, practical teaching activities, and real themes and problem-solving tasks. The results show that the coding literacy of students in the different teaching strategy groups was significantly improved. However, in the Arduino course on DBL programming, the students in the experimental group had a significantly higher learning efficiency in coding literacy than those in the control group. Moreover, according to the qualitative analysis using student interviews, Arduino boards were found to improve students’ motivation to learn coding and to aid in systematically guiding students toward improving their coding literacy by combining their learning with DBL theory. Thus, Arduino technology can be effectively used to improve students’ programming abilities and their operational thinking in practically applying programming theories.

ICT education provides the unlimited resources to collect and analyze data, create presentation using ICT tools and acquire depth of knowledge. This research aims to design ICT competence-integrated syllabuses of reading courses (Literal Reading, Critical Reading, Affective Reading, and Syntopical Reading). The types of syllabus for reading courses in this research is process-oriented syllabuses. This research adapted Design and Development Research (DDR). The stages of DDR are need analysis, evaluation, revision, and evaluation. An analysis was also conducted the CEFR-based English reading to provide language learners a set of language qualification to master. The data sources to analyze existing English reading syllabuses were taken from five different universities in Indonesia. The result of sub RQ 1 found that the ICT competences are mostly integrated in teaching methods, and assessments. For the ICT tools in the existing syllabus mostly used computer, laptop, LCD, word and presentation software. UNESCO competence in the existing syllabus mostly integrated implicitly and explicitly in technology literacy. Learning processes mostly appear in the existing syllabus were identifying, discussing, and analyzing. Sub RQ 2 found the integration of ICT into syllabus component can be applied by infusing the ICT indicator into the syllabus components, and the integration of CEFR into learning materials to see the levels of the students. Sub RQ 3 found designing ICT competences-integrated syllabuses of reading courses used process-oriented for the type of syllabus. The components of syllabus that integrated in reading syllabuses were course description, learning outcomes, learning objective, materials, teaching method, assessments, and resources. The authors of the Education 4.0 concept postulated a flexible combination of digital literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving in educational environments linked to real-world scenarios. Therefore, teachers have been challenged to develop new methods and resources to integrate into their planning in order to help students develop these desirable and necessary skills; hence, the question: What are the characteristics of a teacher to consider within the framework of Education 4.0? This study was conducted in a higher education institution in Ecuador, with the aim to identify the teaching profile required in new undergraduate programs within the framework of Education 4.0 in order to contribute to decision-making about teacher recruitment, professional training and evaluation, human talent management, and institutional policies interested in connecting competencies with the needs of society. Descriptive and exploratory approaches, where we applied quantitative and qualitative instruments (surveys) to 337 undergraduate students in education programs and 313 graduates, were used. We also included interviews with 20 experts in the educational field and five focus groups with 32 chancellors, school principals, university professors, and specialists in the educational area. The data were triangulated, and the results were organized into the categories of (a) processes as facilitators (b), soft skills, (c) human sense, and (d) the use of technologies. The results outlined the profile of a professor as a specialized professional with competencies for innovation, complex problem solving, entrepreneurship, collaboration, international perspective, leadership, and connection with the needs of society. This research study may be of value to administrators, educational and social entrepreneurs, trainers, and policy-makers interested in implementing innovative training programs and in supporting management and policy decisions.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the use patterns of scholarly e-journals by academics for teaching, research and keeping themselves up-to-date. The study also looks at differences in the use patterns across 12 disciplines. Design/methodology/approach A survey was conducted to explore academics’ use patterns of scholarly e-journals in 12 disciplines. The University of the Punjab was used for the sample population. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to all regular and contractual academics of Lahore campuses of the University. After follow up, 457 questionnaires were received with a response rate of 54 per cent. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric statistics were used to analyse data. Findings The results showed that the academics made more frequent use of e-journals, online reference sources and discussion with colleagues for scholarly activities. E-journals were used predominantly for research-related activities rather than for teaching and instruction. Academics obtained e-journal articles primarily from open access sources, i.e. general search engines and Google Scholar as compared to subscribed and other sources of e-journal articles. Disciplinary differences were also found in academics’ use patterns of e-journals. However, academics showed just satisfactory skills regarding use of advanced searching techniques and evaluation of the quality of e-journals. Practical implications Findings will be helpful for information professionals to review their policies and practices in relation to e-journal services for academic community. The needs for e-literacy skills to use e-journals will also be identified and findings will be significant for information professionals in arranging information literacy instruction programmes for targeted disciplines. Originality/value Most of e-journals use studies focused on specific disciplines – Sciences, Life Sciences, Engineering and Technology and Social Sciences. This research study is valuable that investigated use patterns of e-journals across 12 different disciplines at the University of the Punjab.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the national education agenda at all levels of education. New Teaching and Learning (T&L) online norms have been executed except for specific academic programs and subjects only since 18 March 2020 when the Movement Control Order (MCO) was administered and continued to this day. To guarantee students’ continuity of education without online T&L dropout, online face-to-face (Synchronous) or not face-to-face (Asynchronous) is now become the primary approach and method platform with many virtual education applications. Therefore, this research examined students’ readiness to follow online teaching and learning and analysed the impact of online T&L on the national education agenda. This study involved 133 students of Diploma in Fisheries, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, for the first semester of 2020-21. Data were obtained through a questionnaire using Google Form and presented to students by sharing links to their WhatsApp group in the final week of study. The questionnaire was adapted from several instruments related to various aspects of online T&L during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcomes revealed that most students were among Gen-Z with digital literacy background. Thus, it was assisting them having a high level of readiness to face online T&L. In terms of the availability of device infrastructure, internet access, e-Learning, and computers, most (80%) have mastered it. Only (20%) have low proficiency due to limited experience using computers and gadgets due to family constraints and their literacy levels. The research conclusion recommends a consecutive enhancement in curriculum structure flexibility, delivery, evaluation; internet accessibility and digital gap, and self-motivation of students entering the era of the self-regulated learner. Transformation demands the strategic cooperation of various parties in educational institutions, government agencies, the private sector, NGOs, and people’s leaders in the interest of the country’s advancing education relevant to the era of global technology-oriented education and digital infrastructure. Nowadays, innovation for teaching aids is an important requirement to ensure the teaching and learning process can run smoothly. Coinciding with the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025 (Ministry of Education) through the ninth surge of Global Online Learning, the development of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) was built. The ADDIE model has been adapted for this development. The study aims to develop an appropriate interactive learning for Food and Beverage Presentation subjects based on the Vocational College (VC) syllabus. In research development, researchers use Richey and Klein research recommendations, using Alpha and Beta tests in the evaluation phase of the study. The population of the study involved 155 Catering students at Muar Vocational College and the sample of the study were 60 of third and fourth-year Diploma students. The sampling method used is the purposive sampling and the instrument used in the form of the questionnaire. Data collected were collected and analyzed descriptively using Statistical Packages for Social Science (SPSS) version 23.0. Based on the analysis, the reliability value of the instrument is 0.997 and shows that the reliability of the instrument is at a high level. The findings show that the use of MOOC can increase computer literacy (3.75), interest (3.78) and student learning styles (3.75) and make the learning process more interesting. In addition, the findings show that the use of the MOOC application can help students in improving the performance and achievement of students in learning and thus can be an alternative to diversifying the teaching and learning process in VC.

Teacher's abilities to understand the benefits and use of media literacy play an important role in dealing with children as digital natives. Media literacy education can be an instrument through the use of blended-learning websites to address the challenges of education in the 21st century and learning solutions during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. This study aims to figure the teacher's perspective in understanding media literacy as an instrument for implementing blended-learning in early-childhood classes. Using a qualitative approach, this study combines two types of data. Data collection involved kindergarten teachers, six people as informants who attended the interviews and twenty-six participants who filled out questionnaires. Typological data analysis was used for qualitative data as well as simple statistical analysis to calculate the percentage of teacher perspectives on questionnaires collected the pandemic. The findings show five categories from the teacher's perspective. First, about the ability to carry out website-based blended-learning and the use of technology in classrooms and distance learning is still low. It must be transformed into more creative and innovative one. Encouraging teacher awareness of the importance of media literacy education for teachers as a more effective integrated learning approach, especially in rural or remote areas, to be the second finding. Third, national action is needed to change from traditional to blended-learning culture. Fourth, the high need for strong environmental support, such as related-party policies and competency training is the most important finding in this study. Finally, the need for an increase in the ease of access to technology use from all related parties, because the biggest impact of the Covid-19 pandemic is on ECE, which is closely related to the perspective of teachers on technology. The research implication demands increase in technology systems and connections between educators, parents, institutional managers, and education policy holders, for ECE services in urban areas for disadvantaged children, and all children in rural or remote areas. Purpose Rudimentary programming is an essential, transferrable, problem solving skill in many higher education (HE) programmes in academic institutions including Software Engineering, Business Information Technology, Computer Games Development, Design and Technology. The purpose of this paper is to address some of the problematic issues associated with teaching programming by the utilisation of a new novel teaching approach called games-based construction learning (GBCL) to attempt to increase motivation, engagement and learning effectiveness. An international and national trend is to introduce coding at earlier education levels resulting in upper primary education (PE) being the focus of this paper to ascertain if GBCL using Scratch to teach programming concepts is more effective at different levels of upper PE. Design/methodology/approach A large-scale empirical study introducing GBCL to teach programming concepts into 16 classes between levels 4 and 7 in PE utilising 384 children. A detailed implementation framework for GBCL using Scratch in PE was utilised to address all incorporation issues and the games constructed by the children scored utilising a game codification scheme specifically designed to address programming and design as a quantification rubric. The experiment utilised eight 1- h lessons on GBCL using Scratch. Findings The resulted in 178 games of varying levels of complexity developed. The results indicated that GBCL was an effective mechanism to teach programming concepts using Scratch at all levels of upper PE. Primary seven students scored higher in relation to the design metric of the quantification codification rubric. Research limitations/implications Under the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) in Scotland non-traditional teaching approaches are encouraged and development of digital literacy skill is highly advocated. This has resulted in a new approach, novel approach called GBCL where children create their own games utilising an engine such as Scratch is gaining significant attention in terms of being a novel approach. Despite a plethora of similar studies associated with GBCL, it is still not as developed as games-based learning and requires further empirical studies to support the validity of the approach and resolve identified issues. Practical implications Computer programming itself can lead to a highly rewarding career in a number of sectors from games development to banking, such as cybersecurity and systems development. In the last decade, in particular due to the ubiquitous nature of technology there is an increasing international and national trend associated with teaching rudimentary programming concepts at a far younger age including secondary education and the upper PE level. Introducing programming at an earlier level is now being considered essential as the path to transfer from novice to expert programmer level in time is considered nearly a decade approximately. The introduction of GBCL interventions may yield positive results in a supplementary learning capacity in accordance with the CfE and increase the educational effectiveness of programming education in later levels of education. Originality/value This study presents a large-scale empirical evaluation of GBCL in upper PE utilising a compiled implementation framework for incorporation and a detailed game codification scheme to quantify the games produced highlighting coding constructs and design.

The main purpose of the article is to investigate and analyze the features of the teacher's work on teaching junior high school students with developmental disabilities in quarantine. The main tasks are: to analyze the state of the research problem in the psychological and pedagogical literature, to determine the relevance of the study; highlighting the specifics and establishing the essence of the educational process of primary school at this stage; analysis and assessment of the disadvantages and advantages of distance learning in general and in relation to children with disabilities; choice of methods, techniques and means of distance learning; identification of the most effective ways to improve the quality of distance learning for primary school students in quarantine.Several methods were used in the research process: theoretical methods (analysis and generalization of psychological and pedagogical literature on the research problem); empirical methods (questionnaires, expert evaluation, psychological and pedagogical experiment, methods of statistical processing of experimental research data), analysis and synthesis.The article presents the definition of the essence of distance learning, the peculiarities of its implementation with students with typical development and the specifics of the pedagogical approach in the process of teaching junior students with special educational needs; the analysis of the use of special technologies and adaptive technical means of training is carried out; individualization and adaptation of educational materials; the combination of traditional and innovative approaches. The conclusion has been made about the need to acquaint teachers with the principles, organizational and educational components of distance learning: the main social services that provide distance learning on an individual trajectory; the need to increase the computer literacy of teachers and students, to expand the experience of «virtual communication».

Esta propuesta parte de las particularidades de la formación en Lengua A para Traductores, un ámbito poco definido y normalmente muy alejado de los contenidos literarios. Se plantean dos conjuntos de actividades, vinculados a la evaluación y a la reescritura, de cuya vinculación surgen los conceptos de lectura intencional y desautomatización de la escritura, y que parecen por tanto especialmente adecuadas para fomentar una creatividad en el uso de la lengua que resulta de la mayor importancia para la traducción literaria. A partir de unas primeras experimentaciones con reescritura de textos literarios, se puede concluir que las nociones de tono y estilo están intuitivamente disponibles para los escritores noveles y son por tanto excelentes candidatas para ser operativas en la formación en traducción literaria. The distinguishing characteristics of First Language training - a vaguely defined area of study which is not usually explored in literary publications - will form the basis of our investigation. We will consider two sets of activities, both linked to evaluation and rewriting, which will allow us to explore the concepts of intentional reading and deautomisation of the writing process. These notions seem especially useful for encouraging creativity in language use, a highly important skill in literary translation. Based on the results of a few initial experiments involving the rewriting of literary texts, we can conclude that novice writers are intuitively aware of tone and style. These notions could therefore provide an excellent focus for literary translation training.

This paper reports the ongoing project related to the development of mobile-based learning application particularly for Alpha Generations who studies in international school. Due to the advancement of digital technologies, Alpha Generations tend to interact with mobile device compared to conventional environment as they were born in the century of digital age. This includes their learning activities. In Malaysia, expert in language literacy particularly Malay language is compulsory for all including foreigner students who learn in international school. As the mobile-based learning application could provide attractive and interactive interaction compared to conventional teaching method, providing children with additional mobile-based learning tool could facilitates them to have their own active learning experience. This study found that this is the research gap that should be fill in to ensure children in international school able to literate in Malay Language similar to mainstream student. Therefore, mobile-based learning application called BM Year 2 has been developed and evaluated. The proposed application also has been discussed in the previous paper which involves expert evaluation. To ensure the proposed application could fulfill the actual users’ needs, user experience testing has been carried out and discusses in this paper.They are tested in terms of layout and design, functionality, and user’s satisfaction. A set of questionnaires has been set up and distributed to the actual users upon they use the proposed mobile-based learning application BM Year 2. Overall, the empirical findings found that theBM Year 2 able to evokepositive learning experience to the actual users.

A pesar de que la didáctica de la traducción ha experimentado desde hace dos décadas un cambio considerable en su investigación, centrada en el análisis de los procesos mentales del estudiante cuando traduce y desde la perspectiva inductivo-experimental y con numerosos trabajos al respecto, la didáctica de la traducción literaria adolece actualmente de andamiajes teóricos y metodológicos apropiados que describan su gran complejidad y puedan ayudar al estudiante a traducir literatura de manera profesional. Nuestro objetivo en el presente artículo es repasar y criticar en líneas generales el marco teórico-metodológico que ha caracterizado la enseñanza y, en particular, la evaluación de la traducción literaria a lo largo de la historia, basado en nociones prescriptivas de fidelidad, traducibilidad, literalidad o equivalencia entre otras. También veremos que las investigaciones cuantitativas que se vienen llevando a cabo en la didáctica de la traducción son insuficientes si no se complementan con contenidos cualitativos que contribuyan a una reflexión consciente sobre el proceso de traducción. A continuación estableceremos una propuesta didáctica que enfatiza precisamente la importancia de establecer aquellos contenidos adecuados que puedan describir la complejidad cognitiva implicada en la práctica de la traducción literaria y que puedan ayudar a desarrollar estrategias de traducción apropiadas. El estudio de la introspección es, en este sentido, esencial. Despite the fact that translation teaching has undergone a significant change during the last two decades in relation to research from an inductive-experimental perspective focusing on the analysis of students’ mental processes when translating, and that much academic work has consequently emerged, the teaching of literary translation currently lacks an appropriate theoretical and methodological scaffolding that may describe its great complexity, and which can help students to translate literature in a professional way. Our aim in this article is to review and to give a general critical overview of the theoretical and methodological framework in which the teaching, and particularly the evaluation of literary translation in history, is depicted based on prescriptive notions such as faithfulness, translatability, literality or equivalence, among others. We will also see that current quantitative research in translation teaching is insufficient if it is not complemented by qualitative content which contributes to a conscious reflection on the translation process. We will then make a didactic proposal that emphasizes the importance of establishing those types of content that can be used effectively to describe the cognitive complexity implied in the practice of literary translation, and which may consequently help to develop suitable translation strategies. Thus, we believe that the study of introspection is essential.

The purpose of this study is to discuss approaches for developing human–computer interaction (HCI) in educational technology (ET) based on definitions of visual design, learning variables and user-interface design principles in the field of instructional design and technology (IDT). We will do in several stages, first, we will review historical definitions of HCI and its developments in education and considerations for defining visual literacy for learning with instructional design (ID) models. Then, we will review each definition of visual principles for user interface design (UID) or user experience design (UED) and learning from screens. HCI and its roles with the perceptional approach will be discussed as previous definitions in the type of theories such as cognitive load, activity and paying particular attention to primary concepts included in each definition based on the ID model approach. We will also present some of the historical criticisms of the definitions, which provided designing and developing user interfaces. The process should indicate or address possible performance design approaches in ID steps for developing learning and teaching in learning environments as well as developing UID or UED in ET. This also indicates approaches in philosophy of ET and its theory, definition and applications of new technologies as well as UID or UED perspectives and visual design variables. In this study, we review the visual design techniques from past to present that multimedia project design teams should follow the strategies and rules for designing learning environments in industry, business and military based on philosophy of ET and HCI design with ID models by using the newest technologies. The process compares both understanding global UID or UED requirements and visual strategies and considerations for research and product design by ID models. The steps include recognising terminology in ET practice concept, psychological, technological and pedagogical foundations in ID as well as ET approaches and using visual rules for conducting multimedia projects in last decays. At the end of the study, conceptions of ET, ID models and HCI will be discussing to indicate design standards for multimedia projects in the field of IDT. We will also present the relationships between ET and designing problems for creating instructional materials in education. All steps in visual design, UID, UED and HCI design based on philosophical approaches and evaluations in the field are given at the end of the study. A Review of: Julien, Heidi and Cameron Hoffman. “Information Literacy Training in Canada’s Public Libraries.” Library Quarterly 78.1 (2008): 19-41. Objective – To examine the role of Canada’s public libraries in information literacy skills training, and to ascertain the perspectives of public library Internet users with regard to their experiences of information literacy. Design – Qualitative research using semi-structured interviews and observations. Setting – Five public libraries in Canada. Subjects – Twenty-eight public library staff members and twenty-five customers. Methods – This study constituted the second phase of a detailed examination of information literacy (IL) training in Canadian public libraries. Five public libraries located throughout Canada were selected for participation. These comprised a large central branch of a public library located in a town with a population of approximately two million, a main branch of a public library in an urban city of about one million people, a public library in a town with a population of about 75,000, a library in a town of 900 people and a public library located in the community center of a Canadian First Nations reserve that housed a population of less than 100 persons. After notifying customers via signage posted in the vicinity of computers and Internet access areas, the researchers observed each patron as they accessed the Internet via library computers. Observations focused on the general physical environment of the Internet access stations, customer activities and use of the Internet, as well as the nature and degree of customer interactions with each other and with staff. Photographs were also taken and observations were recorded via field notes. The former were analyzed via qualitative content analysis while quantitative analysis was applied to the observations. Additionally, each observed participant was interviewed immediately following Internet use. Interview questions focused on a range of issues including the reasons why customers used the Internet in public libraries, customers’ perceptions about their level of information literacy and their feelings with regard to being information literate, the nature of their exposure to IL training, the benefits they derived from such training, and their desire for further training. Public service librarians and other staff were also interviewed in a similar manner. These questions sought to ascertain staff views on the role of the public library with regard to IL training; perceptions of the need for and expected outcomes of such training; as well as the current situation pertinent to the provision of IL skills training in their respective libraries in terms of staff competencies, resource allocation, and the forms of training and evaluation. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. Data were interpreted via qualitative content analysis through the use of NVivo software. Main Results – Men were more frequent users of public library computers than women, outnumbering them by a ratio ranging from 2:1 to 3.4:1. Customers appeared to be mostly under the age of 30 and of diverse ethnicities. The average income of interviewed customers was less than the Canadian average. The site observations revealed that customers were seen using the Internet mainly for the purposes of communication (e.g., e-mail, instant messaging, online dating services). Such use was observed 78 times in four of the libraries. Entertainment accounted for 43 observations in all five sites and comprised activities such as online games, music videos, and movie listings. Twenty-eight observations involved business/financial uses (e.g., online shopping, exploration of investment sites, online banking). The use of search engines (25 observations), news information (23), foreign language and forum websites (21), and word processing were less frequently observed. Notably, there were only 20 observed library-specific uses (e.g., searching online catalogues, online database and library websites). Customers reported that they used the Internet mainly for general web searching and for e-mail. It was also observed that in general the physical environment was not conducive to computer use due to uncomfortable or absent seating and a lack of privacy. Additionally, only two sites had areas specifically designated for IL instruction. Of the 25 respondents, 19 reported at least five years experience with the Internet, 9 of whom cited experience of 10 years or more. Self-reported confidence with the Internet was high: 16 individuals claimed to be very confident, 7 somewhat confident, and only 2 lacking in confidence. There was a weak positive correlation between years of use and individuals’ reported levels of confidence. Customers reported interest in improving computer literacy (e.g., keyboarding ability) and IL skills (ability to use more sources of information). Some expressed a desire “to improve certain personal attitudes” (30), such as patience when conducting Internet searches. When presented with the Association of College and Research Libraries’ definition of IL, 13 (52%) of those interviewed claimed to be information literate, 8 were ambivalent, and 4 admitted to being information illiterate. Those who professed to be information literate had no particular feeling about this state of being, however 10 interviewees admitted feeling positive about being able to use the Internet to retrieve information. Most of those interviewed (15) disagreed that a paucity of IL skills is a deterrent to “accessing online information efficiently and effectively” (30). Eleven reported development of information skills through self teaching, while 8 cited secondary schools or tertiary educational institutions. However, such training was more in terms of computer technology education than IL. Eleven of the participants expressed a desire for additional IL training, 5 of whom indicated a preference for the public library to supply such training. Customers identified face-to-face, rather than online, as the ideal training format. Four interviewees identified time as the main barrier to Internet use and online access. As regards library staff, 22 (78.6%) of those interviewed posited IL training as an important role for public libraries. Many stated that customers had been asking for formal IL sessions with interest in training related to use of the catalogue, databases, and productivity software, as well as searching the web. Two roles were identified in the context of the public librarian as a provider of IL: “library staff as teachers/agents of empowerment and library staff as ‘public parents’” (32). The former was defined as supporting independent, lifelong learning through the provision of IL skills, and the latter encompassing assistance, guidance, problem solving, and filtering of unsuitable content. Staff identified challenges to IL training as societal challenges (e.g., need for customers to be able to evaluate information provided by the media, the public library’s role in reducing the digital divide), institutional (e.g., marketing of IL programs, staff constraints, lack of budget for IL training), infrastructural (e.g., limited space, poor Internet access in library buildings) and pedagogical challenges, such as differing views pertinent to the philosophy of IL, as well as the low levels of IL training to which Canadian students at all levels had been previously exposed. Despite these challenges library staff acknowledged positive outcomes resulting from IL training in terms of customers achieving a higher level of computer literacy, becoming more skillful at searching, and being able to use a variety of information sources. Affective benefits were also apparent such as increased independence and willingness to learn. Library staff also identified life expanding outcomes, such as the use of IL skills to procure employment. In contrast to customer self-perception, library staff expressed that customers’ IL skills were low, and that this resulted in their avoidance of “higher-level online research” and the inability to “determine appropriate information sources” (36). Several librarians highlighted customers’ incapacity to perform simple activities such as opening an email account. Library staff also alluded to customer’s reluctance to ask them for help. Libraries in the study offered a wide range of training. All provided informal, personalized training as needed. Formal IL sessions on searching the catalogue, online searching, and basic computer skills were conducted by the three bigger libraries. A mix of librarians and paraprofessional staff provided the training in these libraries. However, due to a lack of professional staff, the two smaller libraries offered periodic workshops facilitated by regional librarians. All the libraries lacked a defined training budget. Nonetheless, the largest urban library was well-positioned to offer IL training as it had a training coordinator, a training of trainers program, as well as technologically-equipped training spaces. The other libraries in this study provided no training of trainers programs and varied in terms of the adequacy of spaces allocated for the purpose of training. The libraries also varied in terms of the importance placed on the evaluation of IL training. At the largest library evaluation forms were used to improve training initiatives, while at the small town library “evaluations were done anecdotally” (38). Conclusion – While Internet access is available and utilized by a wide cross section of the population, IL skills are being developed informally and not through formal training offered by public libraries. Canadian public libraries need to work to improve information literacy skills by offering and promoting formal IL training programs.

The introduction of basic computer media for early childhood is very important because it is one of the skills that children need in this century. Need to support parents and teachers in developing the implementation of the use of computer technology at home or at school. This study aims to determine and understand the state of learning conducted based on technology. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study model. This study involved 15 children and 5 parents. Data obtained through interviews (children and parents) and questionnaires for parents. The results showed that children who were introduced to and taught basic computers earlier became more skilled in learning activities. Suggestions for further research to be more in-depth both qualitatively and quantitatively explore the use of the latest technology to prepare future generations who have 21st century skills. This study aims to: (1) Describe the development of multimodal literacy-based literacy teaching materials at SDS Amir Hamzah. (2) Testing the feasibility of teaching materials for literacy activities based on multimodal literacy at SDS Amir Hamzah. (3) Testing the effectiveness of teaching materials for literacy activities based on multimodal literacy at SDS Amir Hamzah. This research is a development research using the ADDIE development model, namely: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The subjects of this study were the fourth grade students of SDS Amir Hamzah in the 2019/2020 academic year consisted of 21 students. The instruments used are questionnaires of expert validity, student and teacher responses, and student performance rubrics using literacy activity teaching materials. The results of this study indicate that (1) the process of developing teaching materials for literacy activities based on multimodal literacy includes five steps, namely: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. (2) The literacy activity teaching materials of multimodal literacy-based are feasible to use with an average percentage of 88.47% and very feasible criteria. (3) The effective multimodal literacy-based literacy activity teaching materials are used with a gaincore value of 0.575.

This study aims to determine the effect of the whole language approach to the ability to read and write in English in early stages of children aged 5-6 years in one of the kindergartens in the Yogyakarta Special Region. The population in this study were 43 children who were in the age range of 5-6 years in the kindergarten. Twenty-nine participants were included in the experimental class subjects as well as the control class with posttest only control group design. Observation is a way to record data in research on early reading and writing ability. Computer assisted language learning (CALL) literacy is an issue of great concern not sufficiently dealt with in the literature of language teaching and learning. This study examines CALL literacy by Iranian EFL teachers. Reviewing the literature and some models of computer, information, and technology literacy, to collect the data, a questionnaire in Likert scale composed of four sections of computer mediated communication (CMC) tools, online information literacy, multimedia literacy, and basic computer skills was utilized. Following the data analysis by SPSS package, the findings showed Iranian EFL teachers’ moderate level of CALL literacy; however, their literacy on CMC tools was below the satisfactory level. Further, there was a significant relationship between the teachers’ literacy and their academic degree, yet the relationship between their CALL literacy and their teaching experience as well as the difference between the teachers’ literacy and gender was found insignificant. The study has implications for EFL teachers in educational systems supporting CALL-based pedagogy.

This in-depth case study explores a modern approach to education: the benefits of using film, technology and other creative, non-conventional pedagogical methods in the classroom to enhance students' understanding of literature. The study explores the positive effects of introducing a variety of visual-based (and auditory-based) teaching methods to learners within an urban high school English language arts inclusion classroom. The study group reads literature, analyses films and works on various creative assignments, such as incorporating music lyrics, using computer technology and creating art. The study outlines supplemental assignments designed to have students respond critically to literature within a creative learning environment. As a result, the students' grades improve, and they are able to stay connected with the readings. The case study also references similar professional case studies, authors and educational theorists.

Literacy has become a crucial position in education, especially in Indonesia. It is used as one of ways to develop education through developing the culture of reading, writing, and counting. The study aims to find out benefits and challenges of implementing storytelling in teaching literacy. The study employed a qualitative descriptive research design. The data were obtained from students� interview and observation. The findings found some benefits in implementing teaching program which include using two languages as the medium of interaction, providing suitable learning materials and various media, using of dramatization to show a character�s expression, asking moral value of the story as an evaluation instrument, developing students� literacy ability, arousing students� imagination, enriching students� vocabulary, and developing students� reading awareness and interest. Meanwhile, some challenges found in implementing teaching program are students� proficiency and length of texts. Based on those findings, it is suggested to provide more times to truly explore students� literacy ability and their preference in story.

Having certain level in computer literacy is very important to educational setting for students. They should have skill and positive attitudes toward computer to achieve effective teaching and learning process. This study aimedto measure the computing skills, knowledge of IAIN Malikussaleh students about computers, also their attitude toward computers. It is also to determine whether students’ characteristics such as field of study, duration of students’ exposure to computers have significant influence on their computer literacy. From the computation it can be seen that the level of IAIN Malikussaleh students’’ computer skills applied was 4.306 of mean from the highest score of 5 with standard deviation 0.82624 in general. This number indicated that IAIN Malikussaleh students’’ level of computer skill is above average. English and Arabic department students possess quite similar ability or skill in term of computer literacy.The most notable result of this result is the respondents’ attitude toward computer. The respondents who possess good computer skills should have positive attitude toward computer. However, the IAIN Malikussaleh students’ attitude toward computer is average.

Objective – The aim of this paper is to evaluate teaching effectiveness in one-shot information literacy (IL) instruction sessions. The authors used multiple methods, including plus/delta forms, peer evaluations, and instructor feedback surveys, in an effort to improve student learning, individual teaching skill, and the overall IL program at the American University in Cairo. Methods – Researchers implemented three main evaluation tools to gather data in this study. Librarians collected both quantitative and qualitative data using student plus/delta surveys, peer evaluation, and faculty feedback in order to draw overall conclusions about the effectiveness of one-shot IL sessions. By designing a multi-method study, and gathering information from students, faculty, and instruction librarians, results represented the perspectives of multiple stakeholders. Results – The data collected using the three evaluation tools provided insight into the needs and perspectives of three stakeholder groups. Individual instructors benefit from the opportunity to improve teaching through informed reflection, and are eager for feedback. Faculty members want their students to have more hands-on experience, but are pleased overall with instruction. Students need less lecturing and more authentic learning opportunities to engage with new knowledge. Conclusion – Including evaluation techniques in overall information literacy assessment plans is valuable, as instruction librarians gain opportunities for self-reflection and improvement, and administrators gather information about teaching skill levels. The authors gathered useful data that informed administrative decision making related to the IL program at the American University in Cairo. The findings discussed in this paper, both practical and theoretical, can help other college and university librarians think critically about their own IL programs, and influence how library instruction sessions might be evaluated and improved.

The library is an important platform for readers to acquire information, and also shoulders the responsibility to cultivate readers’ information literacy. How to enhance information literacy is a public service issue that warrants prompt solution. In this study, we establish a reciprocal teaching mode composed of four elements: teacher, student, learning content and interaction-supporting platform, based on the reciprocal teaching theory, in combination with the characteristics of information literacy training in information-based libraries, uses virtual reality (VR) technology to produce verisimilar teaching resources and build a virtual reading environment and a virtual reading community, to enable readers to discuss, read and evaluate under a dynamic reading mode. Meanwhile, a new reciprocal teaching technique of “Rain Classroom” is also introduced innovatively. We first conduct a quantitative evaluation on information literacy using fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method, then verify and correct the evaluation results using data mining technology, so that objective and accurate results can be obtained for the evaluation of readers’ information literacy. After the implementation of this library learning mode, through a questionnaire survey and analysis, it is concluded that the proposed mode can help the library spread knowledge, improve the effect of information literacy.

Purpose – The purpose of this article is to discuss the reasons for an approach to teaching information literacy (IL) as an epistemological process of discovery, in which emphasis is shifted away from short-term mastery of library skills and re-centered on higher-order intellectual concerns. Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on evaluation of personal experience, readings within and outside the field of teaching librarianship and research into the ways students interact with information. Findings – An open approach to working with undergraduate students offers a fruitful way forward for teaching librarians and IL learners, both of whom stand constantly on the edge of an unpredictable information universe. Originality/value – Learner-oriented approaches to teaching IL are quite common, but relatively few studies have considered, in any depth, the possibility for a truly open model for IL learning that approaches the world of information as unified but not monolithic. This study draws on a variety of perspectives from outside librarianship to present a different vision for the future of information interaction and its facilitation by teaching librarians.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to offer a model of information literacy instruction that utilizes social media to teach metaliteracy as the foundation for information literacy today and articulate the effects of social media on students’ information-seeking behaviors and processes and complete the goals articulated in part one of this study (Witek and Grettano, 2012). Design/methodology/approach – The study was conducted in conjunction with the course rhetoric and social media, co-designed and co-taught by the authors. Data sources consisted of student work and methodologies including textual and rhetorical analysis and observation. Findings are analyzed and presented through the lens of the Association of College and Research Libraries Standards (2000) and Mackey and Jacobson’s (2011) metaliteracy framework. Findings – The study identified four effects of social media use on students’ information literacy practices and behaviors: information now comes to users; information recall and attribution are now social; evaluation is now social; and information is now open. Data illustrate metaliteracy in practice and tie examples of this to the authors’ pedagogical decisions. Research limitations/implications – Article offers a model for teaching information literacy in the context of participatory information environments which can be adapted by other practitioners. Authors concede that the small sample size, limited by course enrollment, limits the generalizability of the study findings to student populations as a whole. Originality/value – Valuable to information literacy instructors and researchers because it offers the first formal application of concepts theorized in Mackey and Jacobson’s (2011) metaliteracy framework to information literacy instruction.

The major purpose of this study was to determine if the five-year-old child could be taught reading skills through the computer. Fourteen children attending a preschool for low income families received specific reading skills instruction exclusively on the microcomputer. The curriculum used at the preschool was designed to eliminate any drill and practice on isolated reading skills. The study was a pretest/posttest single group design. All subjects were administered the Metropolitan Readiness Test and the results were analyzed using the one-way analysis of variance ( p < .01). A secondary purpose was to determine if the children could learn basic computer literacy skills without direct instruction and drill. Through an analysis of the observation notes it was determined that the computer literacy skills were learned by the children while involved in the academic skills instructional program.

Aim/Purpose: The aim of this project was to explore a method to enable an updated under-standing of digital literacy to be implemented in curricula in an environment of an existing, but outdated, understanding of digital literacy. . Background: The changing healthcare environment increasingly emphasizes the importance of digital literacy skills; therefore academics in the optometry discipline at Deakin University sought to better understand where digital literacy skills were taught in their program, and whether delivery was implicit or explicit. Methodology: This case study describes a systematic review of the optometric curriculum to first identify where and what digital literacy skills are currently being addressed in the curriculum, identify the gaps, and develop a strategy to address the gaps. Contribution: The main outcome of this work is the development of a spiraling curriculum to support the development of digital literacy skills required in later units of the program and for clinical practice post-graduation. Findings: Although the definition of digital literacy may be outdated, the digital literacy capabilities being addressed in the curriculum had grown as digital technology use by staff and students had expanded. This, together with the realization that students were not as digitally capable as expected, indicated that teaching digital literacy skills needed to be made overt throughout the curriculum. Recommendations for Practitioners: The process developed through this case study provides a strong foundation for course teams, curriculum developers and educational designers to efficiently analyze digital literacy expectations in existing, accredited health-related curricula and improve the curricula by more overtly embedding digital literacy teaching into it. Impact on Society: Graduates of the amended program of study are expected to be better prepared to undertake their future careers in a digitally enhanced and disrupted environment. Future Research: The framework will be used to explore digital literacy teaching practices in other disciplines. A systematic evaluation will be undertaken to identify the benefits and short comings of using the framework. The elements that make up the new definition of digital literacy need to be better articulated to allow curriculum developers to be better informed as to how to interpret the framework in their context.

Purpose – The purpose of this study was to test a method of teaching information literacy, using the Toulmin method of argumentation, to aid students in developing topics, evaluating sources and creating stronger arguments that avoided “myside” or confirmation bias. Design/methodology/approach – The Toulmin method of argument analysis was tested in two related studies. A quasi-experimental comparison study in six sections of English composition courses was implemented at a small liberal arts college. A traditional one-shot session was compared to a flipped class, incorporating Toulmin argumentation. A Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills (SAILS) test was administered and research papers analyzed using a rubric. A modified version of the Toulmin method, using images, was implemented in a two-unit information literacy course at a state university. Pretest and posttest information literacy test scores and research papers were analyzed. Findings – The first study showed that the experimental group performed better on the rubric scores for research papers when results were adjusted by excluding the one honors section. The survey results from this study showed mixed results for the flipped classroom approach. The second study showed a statistically significant improvement in pretest and posttest scores from the information literacy achievement test and the research paper rubric analysis showed that instructional goals were at least partly met. Research limitations/implications – Further research in incorporating instruction in argument into information literacy instruction is indicated. These studies integrated the Toulmin method successfully but represent fairly unique situations and thus more studies are needed to assess the overall impact of using this method in the context of information literacy instruction. Social implications – This study was implemented with two different population groups and shows how instruction can impact different groups differently and can be adapted to increase its effectiveness. Originality/value – The study highlights the value of collaborative assessment and of inclusion of critical thinking goals in information literacy instruction through instruction in argumentation using textual and visual means.

A Review of: Williams, Dorothy and Louisa Coles. “Evidence-Based Practice in Teaching: An Information Perspective.” Journal of Documentation 63.6 (2007): 812-35. Objective – The objective of the study was to explore how teachers in the United Kingdom use research literature to inform their practice. Special emphasis was given to the effect of the teachers’ information literacy and their level of ready access to research information. Design – This study was primarily a qualitative study utilizing mixed methods, including individual interviews, focus groups (“literature review groups”), and an online discussion forum. Qualitative data was supplemented by a questionnaire survey. Setting – The qualitative portions of the study took place in the United Kingdom across five education authorities; however, it is unclear where these authorities were geographically. The survey was distributed across Scotland, England, and Wales. The study was conducted during 2002 to 2003. Subjects – Nursery, primary, and secondary teachers, school librarians, school library systems, and education authority advisors (EA) in the United Kingdom. Methods – The 28 interviews (54% primary teachers, 39% secondary teachers, 7% special education) and four focus groups (each with three to five participants; 15 participants in total, including teachers at various levels from primary, secondary, and nursery schools) were conducted with volunteers from a random sample across five education authorities. Recruitment was done by sending written materials to schools. Those interviewed represented five authorities. Focus groups were conducted in just four authorities. It is not clear when the individual and group interviews were conducted (time of day and year). Volunteers were given the option to receive funding for a substitute teacher in order to participate, though none took advantage of this offer. The interview process used a vignette technique to elicit teachers’ attitudes to a situation in a non-threatening way. Interviewees were asked to comment on two situations that might make them seek information. One was adding a new subject or new aspect of an existing subject into the classroom. The second dealt with a “new pedagogical challenge.” Though the topics of the vignettes were provided, the exact way the topics were presented was not. They were asked how they would advise another teacher in these situations then relate their thoughts to a real situation they had faced. Interviews were about one hour in length. Twenty-five of the 28 interviews were taped and transcribed verbatim. Extensive notes were made for the other three. Transcripts and notes were analyzed using QSR N4 Classic content analysis software. Themes related to information literacy and information seeking, including barriers, were noted. Four literature response groups were given examples of research information (journal articles, reports, etc) related to information computer technology (ICT) and class size. Each topic had information from various evidence levels and included both print and electronic format. Again, the discussion topics were provided in the article, but the exact way the topics were presented was not. Over 2 to 2.5 hours, teachers read the materials, made notes, and discussed the information as a group. For the ICT information, groups were asked to discuss presentation of the information. For the class size information, groups were asked to discuss content of the materials. Discussions were transcribed verbatim and analyzed with the content analysis software. A total of 3899 questionnaire surveys were distributed to teachers (3000), head teachers (500), school librarians (250), education authority advisors (100), and school library systems (49). Response rate was exceptionally low in the teacher and head teacher categories, with only 10.9% of teachers and 15.6% of head teachers responding. Response rates in other categories ranged from 31.2% to 55%, with the highest response rates from education authorities and school library systems. The survey served to gain an understanding of attitudes about using research in practice across a broad spectrum of stakeholders. The survey instrument itself, which was not provided in the article, was piloted prior to the study, but there is no mention of reliability or validity analysis. To supplement study data, participants who had stated they would be interested in participating in an online discussion were sent preliminary findings and asked to comment on themes using the online discussion forum. Only 21 posts were gathered using this method. Overall, the methods used in this study are appropriate for the questions that were posed in the article. Qualitative studies are useful for gathering data where little is known and where more data would help identify possibly hypotheses for further study. Main Results – Teachers in this study relied on a small set of resources and preferred what was readily available at their own school. These teachers most frequently used colleagues, in-service events, the Internet, newspapers, and reports typically found in schools as sources of information. Sources that information professionals would consider quality evidence were rarely mentioned. These teachers also tended to prefer sources that present information in a practical context. Not surprisingly, time was identified as a major barrier to accessing research information in addition to limited access to resources. The Internet was identified as the preferred point of access, citing ease of use, speed, and convenience as the reasons for this preference. Comments suggested a preference for synthesized information sources. Teachers indicated they felt the responsibility for disseminating research information fell on head teachers and EA. They also noted that access to information from their own school library was a problem. They felt librarians and libraries in schools were meant for students, not for teachers, and also expressed that school libraries typically did not provide access to research. Comments suggested that the structure of teaching in a classroom itself does not allow teachers to use information as is needed for evidence-based practice. There were concerns expressed about lack of school library funding available to supply research evidence needed by teachers. School librarians and school library services respondents did indicate that they provide a broad range of services aimed at teachers, such as alerts to literature, information skills training, and advice on resources. However, their sources of research for teachers were limited in nature. Librarians indicated that teachers did not ask for research information, but if demand were there, they could respond accordingly. Teacher comments suggest that librarians might want to consider being more proactive in distributing information. Though teachers expressed high confidence in their abilities to find information, comments about search habits and practices contradicted this. Most remarks suggested searching techniques that were not sophisticated or showing higher levels of information literacy competency. The respondents were concerned with evaluating the quality of information sources but found this appraisal to be more difficult if the authors did not explain the impact or change in practice that should come from the findings. The participants in this study were likely biased toward using research information more than other teachers. This is an important limitation that the authors do address. Additionally, the response rate for the survey was quite low for the teacher subset. Despite this limitation, data from the questionnaire was used appropriately to confirm and clarify data from the qualitative portions of the study. Conclusion – In order for teachers to appreciate the value of quality research evidence enough to regularly seek it out and place it into practice, a culture of evidence based practice must be embraced and supported by their school authorities. This study indicates significant potential for school librarians and systems to support this culture through proactive dissemination of research, provision of local access to materials, and education related to information literacy. School librarians must evolve from their typical student-centric role to accomplish this.

Purpose of the study: The article discusses some aspects of the professional development of the artist in the context of changes occurring in the modern domestic system of higher education. The authors conducted research aimed at studying the phenomenon of the artist's personality and related features of students' search for their own trajectory of education. Methodology: The literature review of works describing the life and work of artists, essays on the history of art has been conducted. Main Findings: As a result of the study, the criteria for evaluating the level of artistic literacy of students before and after passing elective courses were identified. In the course of the experiment was the evaluation of the creative works of students, performing tests and surveys. Quality indicators have significantly improved as a result of the experiment. The level of motivation of students has increased significantly. Applications of this study: The main conclusion of the experimental classes was to prove the relevance and importance of studying the basics of artistic literacy for the successful education of an artist of any specialization. The results of this study will serve as a basis for continuing research in this area of art education. The experience described in the article can serve as a prototype for higher school art pedagogy. Novelty/Originality of this study: Comparison of the results of experimental and control groups showed a significant increase in quality indicators. During the experiment, several points were identified that determine the prospects for further research on the introduction into the educational process of topical issues included in the conditional representation of the structure of the concepts of artistic literacy.

With the development of computer technology and network processing technology, information literacy competency has become an essential ability for contemporary college students. The traditional teaching mode of information literacy takes the form of library literature retrieval. The teaching content is relatively boring and dull, and the teaching form is backward, which makes many students lack interest in learning and produces an adverse effect on students’ improvement of information literacy required by their professional study. For this reason, in this paper, “hierarchical embedded service mode” was applied in the learning of information literacy course and an embedded information literacy teaching network composed of three elements, that is, teachers, learners and librarians, was built. After that, targeted information literacy teaching methods were designed from the perspectives of program, object, teaching content, teaching methods and teaching staff. On this basis, a teaching feedback mechanism for information literacy course with entrepreneurship and innovation as the goals was set up, which included 5 primary categories, course content, teaching design, interface design, media technology, and course management, and 25 secondary categories. It was found in a teaching experiment that the students have been greatly improved in terms of autonomous learning ability, learning interest, classroom activity and reading ability.

Curriculum literacy is in the forefront to increase the professional competence of teachers. Based on this, the study focuses on the extent of pre-service teachers’ curriculum literacy level on their teacher readiness. The study is designed in a predictive correlation model. In this study, instructors’ computer self-efficacy perceptions are examined in terms of variables such as age, gender, academic status, teaching experience, computer literacy and computer skills. The study is a descriptive one in which relational scanning method has been utilized. The study has been carried out within the framework of the data obtained from 172 police instructors who work in 28 Police Vocational Schools of Higher Education across the country. The data were collected by using a survey and “The Computer Self-efficacy Perception Scale”. A significant difference has been found between the self-efficacy perceptions of the instructors and their computer skills and computer training that they received. In addition to this, it has been seen that there was not any significant difference between self-efficacy perceptions of instructors and age, gender, position status, teaching experience and computer literacy. This is the first study carried out for determining the self-efficacy perceptions of police instructors. The results should be considered during the police trainer development trainings. Purpose This paper aims to investigate the impact of blogs on teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) to primary students. The study also explores educators’ perceptions of social media tools and digital literacy in school environments. Design/methodology/approach A three-step approach was used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. First, the blogs of 23 fifth-grade students in an EFL class in Kuwait was analysed for one semester along with student perceptions and teacher observations. Second, a survey was distributed to the students at the end of the semester, and finally, four focus groups were conducted regarding educators’ perceptions on the use of social media, their skills and needs and problems encountered. Findings The findings showed that by the end of the semester, students were writing lengthy sentences, had fewer spelling and grammatical mistakes, were more motivated and independent and displayed a more positive attitude towards learning EFL. In addition, educators are enthusiastic about using Web technologies in their teaching practices but have several concerns such as digital literacy competencies, technology-use behaviour and lack of accessibility to digital content. Research limitations/implications The number of questions on the student survey could be reduced. Also, it would be preferable in future studies to require all students to blog at least twice a week which could provide a broader representation of their writing abilities. Originality/value Little research has been reported in the literature on the use of blogs in teaching EFL to primary school students. Most literature focuses on teaching EFL to university students. By using a mixed-methodology approach, this study also highlights the needs of educators and students in technology learning environments and makes a good contribution towards offering pragmatic solutions.

Introduction: Many faculty in two Schools of Nursing found that students in the fourth year of the Bachelor of Nursing program were not well equipped to perform information literacy activities efficiently and effectively, such as doing research to support their daily work. A course-integrated information literacy program was implemented at both sites, which left some students having very little information literacy training, whereas others who started the program in later years had information literacy training in all or most years of the curriculum. This study sought to evaluate students as they gained more experience with information literacy. Methods: To determine if increased exposure to information literacy training improved students' levels of competency and confidence, the authors compared first-year students with two groups of fourth-year students who had differing exposures to information literacy. Results: Acceptable response rates for data analysis were acquired at only one site. It was found that overall, fourth-year students were more confident and tested better with information literacy competencies than first-year students, but there was not as much improvement as was hypothesized. Discussion: The results of this evaluation have demonstrated a need to improve the information literacy teaching in certain areas. The data have also indicated that students do indeed retain information literacy skills with an increased number of sessions. Further areas for study are outlined as well as the limitations and strengths of the study design.

Information and Communication Technology has changed instructional conveyance. Advancement recorded in information assembling, teaching, and learning collection has given teachers new devices to work with, subsequently the upheaval in the field of training. This study examined computer literacy among Science, Technology, and Mathematics (STM) instructors in Colleges of Education. Discoveries show that the degree of computer proficiency among STM instructors is low. The explanation behind this incorporates few available skillful instructors, insufficient ICT tools in schools, computer phobia, access to Personal Computers (PCs)/PC labs, and absence of ICT devices for STM training. Proposals were anyway made that will help improve the degree of proficiency among STM instructors.

Case-Based Learning (CBL) is a popular and successful teaching method used for a long time in disciplines such as medicine, business, law, and computer science. In the past decade, there has been a trend to introduce CBL into library instructions as an active teaching approach in the field of library and information science. Although a few studies have been conducted to investigate the advantages of this teaching technique in the library and information science literature, there remains a substantial absence of first-hand instructional experiences and observations from academic librarians who are actively teaching information literacy. This article presents a personal account of the concept, design, implementation, and assessment of CBL in an information literacy classroom. It discusses the advantages and limitations of CBL, offers suggestions for the future, and points out potential concerns related to the evaluation of workload, librarians’ responsibilities, and the workplace culture. Based on experiences and assessments of CBL classes, the article outlines foreseeable challenges for teaching librarians planning to implement CBL program in information literacy education.

Recent developments in technology have changed the learner’s profile and the learning outcomes. Today, with the emergence of higher-order thinking skills and computer literacy skills, teaching through traditional methods is likely to fail to achieve the learning outcomes. That is why; teachers and teacher candidates are expected to have computer literacy skills. Programming is the main focus of this study since it is an important part of computer literacy. The study aims to analyze mathematics education students’ skills in the process of programming and their practices of integrating it into their teaching. The participants of the study are 42 third grade students of an Elementary Mathematics Education Program of a state university in Turkey. Within the study in which theory and practice was carried out simultaneously, the participants were taught the basics of programming and the algorithms with C programming language. The teacher candidates put the theoretical knowledge into practice using the visual programming application by MIT App Inventor at the computer laboratory. In addition, they used the MIT App Inventor visual programming environment to develop programs they will use in teaching mathematics in groups. Given the component of teaching of programming during this process, it is considered that the process of teaching in question will be effective in planning the teaching process of future studies. The reason is that not only it analyses the development of the variables used in this study but also because it takes into consideration the opinions of teacher candidates.

The Covid-19 pandemic that has occurred in Indonesia since March 2020 indirectly forced educators to switch from face-to-face teaching activities to online activities. Seeing the unrest experienced by educators, especially teachers and lecturers, who are not familiar with online teaching activities, the Online Learning Communication Science study program from Universitas Pelita Harapan held community service activities with the theme of digital literacy that can be followed by educators throughout Indonesia. Google Classroom is a medium that is raised in this activity because of the ease provided through its features even though Google Classroom cannot yet be categorized as a Learning Management System. Moreover, Google Classroom can be obtained for free and can be used through smart devices or computers that have an internet connection. With large-scale social restrictions (PSBB), this activity was held online using the digital platform Zoom Meeting. The result of this activity is that educators experience improved ability and understanding to carry out online teaching activities using Google Classroom such as creating classes, assignments, and quizzes, sharing teaching materials to conduct evaluations in the hope that educators are ready to do #ngajardarirumah.ABSTRACT (INDONESIAN): Pandemi Covid-19 yang terjadi di Indonesia sejak Maret 2020 secara tidak langsung memaksa para tenaga pendidik untuk beralih dari kegiatan belajar mengajar secara tatap muka menjadi kegiatan secara dalam jaringan (daring). Melihat keresahan yang dialami oleh para tenaga pendidik, khususnya guru dan dosen, yang belum terbiasa dengan kegiatan pengajaran secara daring maka program studi pendidikan jarak jauh (PJJ) Ilmu Komunikasi Universitas Pelita Harapan mengadakan kegiatan PkM dengan tema literasi digital yang dapat diikuti oleh tenaga pendidik di seluruh Indonesia. Google Classroom menjadi media yang diangkat dalam kegiatan ini karena kemudahan yang diberikan melalui fitur-fitur yang dimilikinya meskipun Google Classroom belum dapat dikategorikan sebagai sebuah Learning Management System. Selain itu Google Classroom dapat diperoleh secara gratis dan dapat digunakan melalui gawai pintar ataupun komputer yang memiliki koneksi internet. Dengan adanya Pembatasan Sosial Berskala Besar (PSBB) maka kegiatan ini diselenggarakan secara daring dengan menggunakan platform digital Zoom Meeting. Hasil dari kegiatan ini adalah tenaga pendidik mengalami peningkatan kemampuan dan pemahaman untuk melaksanakan kegiatan belajar mengajar secara daring menggunakan Google Classroom seperti membuat kelas, tugas dan kuis, membagikan materi ajar hingga melakukan evaluasi dengan harapan para tenaga pendidik siap untuk melakukan #ngajardarirumah.

In this study, instructors’ computer self-efficacy perceptions are examined in terms of variables such as age, gender, academic status, teaching experience, computer literacy and computer skills. The study is a descriptive one in which relational scanning method has been utilized. The study has been carried out within the framework of the data obtained from 172 police instructors who work in 28 Police Vocational Schools of Higher Education across the country. The data were collected by using a survey and “The Computer Self-efficacy Perception Scale”. A significant difference has been found between the self-efficacy perceptions of the instructors and their computer skills and computer training that they received. In addition to this, it has been seen that there was not any significant difference between self-efficacy perceptions of instructors and age, gender, position status, teaching experience and computer literacy. This is the first study carried out for determining the self-efficacy perceptions of police instructors. The results should be considered during the police trainer development trainings. This research aimed to develop a textbook and an e-book of teaching materials based on Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) incorporating the value of Bantenese culture to develop mathematical literacy in social arithmetic; to examine the user's response to the textbook and e-book of teaching materials; and to identify students' mathematical literacy after using the textbook and e-book of teaching materials. The development research method used in this study refers to the research development model, which was initiated by Borg and Gall and adapted by Sugiyono into seven steps. Six expert tests from the material expert test and media expert test have carried out testing of the textbook and e-book teaching materials developed. The results of the study showed that the average quality of the teaching materials reached 85%, included in the 'good' category and the average of the evaluation aspect was 82%, included in the category of "very practical". The results also revealed that the student's responses to the practical aspect for the teaching materials was 90% or "very practical". Students' average responses to the teaching materials was also classified as 'good' (89%). Besides, the average effectiveness was 93%, showing that that teaching materials were effective to use for developinh students' mathematical literacy.
