AbstractAn approach to establish a master curve for effective creep compliances of polymeric off-axis composites with various fiber orientations was presented. Carbon/epoxy composite IM7/977–3 was used to fabricate four types of off-axis specimens and then subjected to momentary creep tests after a period of initial aging. Creep compliance and elastic compliance were separated from the total compliance. Using one-parameter creep potential theory, creep compliances were transformed to effective creep compliances. After choosing a proper value for the one-parameter, all effective creep compliances with various off-axis fiber orientations were superposed into a master curve. This master curve enables us to obtain creep compliance with any off-axis fiber orientation by testing only one off-axis specimen.

In robotic processes, the compliance of the robot arm plays a very important role. In some conditions, for example, in robotic assembly, robot arm compliance can compensate for small position and orientation errors of the end-effector. In other processes, like machining, robot compliance may generate chatter vibrations with an impairment in the quality of the machined surface. In industrial robots, the compliance of the end-effector is chiefly due to joint compliances. In this paper, joint compliances of a serial six-joint industrial robot are identified with a novel modal method making use of specific modes of vibration dominated by the compliance of only one joint. Then, in order to represent the effect of the identified compliances on robot performance in an intuitive and geometric way, a novel kinematic method based on the concept of “Mozzi axis” of the end-effector is presented and discussed.

Social enterprises generate revenue to solve social, humanitarian, and ecological problems. Their products are not a means to the end of profits, but rather profits are a means to the end of their production. This dynamic presents many of the same corporate governance issues facing other forprofit firms, including legal compliance. The author contends, however, that traditional strategies for corporate compliance are incongruent to the social enterprise’s unique normative framework. Specifically, traditional compliance theory, with its prioritization of shareholder interests, stands at odds with the social enterprise’s mission-driven purpose. Attention to this distinction is essential for developing effective compliance and enforcement policies in the future. Indeed, arguably the greatest feature of the social enterprise is its potential to harness organizational characteristics that inspire the values and culture most closely linked with ethical behavior— without resort to more costly or intrusive measures.

In hockey, players experience different compliances during impacts to the head, from stiff ice to compliant collisions against other players. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of striking compliance in ice hockey impacts and its influence on dynamic response and brain tissue strain. Three striking caps of low, medium, and high compliances were used to impact a helmeted 50th-percentile Hybrid III headform. The headform was impacted at five locations at three velocities, representative of collision scenarios in hockey. The dependent variables, peak resultant linear and rotational acceleration as well as maximum principal strain were analyzed using a multivariate analysis of variance to determine significant differences between the compliances. The results indicated a significant effect of compliance on the responses of the headform. As expected, low-impact compliance resulted in higher linear and rotational accelerations when compared to the medium and high compliance conditions. However, while the linear and rotational acceleration responses of the medium and high compliance conditions would indicate a low chance of brain injury, the maximum principal strain magnitudes indicated a high likelihood of concussion. Medium- and high-impact compliances are a factor that has not been considered when designing and testing helmet technology in sport, with current methods reflective of low compliance surfaces, that is, those with high stiffness and rigidity. The results of this study demonstrate that an impact compliance is an important factor in producing brain injury and should be considered when certifying helmets through standard testing to mitigate the risk of brain injury.

Objective - This study aims to criticize the meaning of taxpayer's compliance. Methodology – The paradigm used in this study is a qualitative design through dramaturgy theory. Findings and Novelty – The result of the study indicates that the present taxpaying compliance is still equivocal with multi-interpretation. The term "less compliant" implicating compliance by a condition, neither completely compliant nor completely incompliant. The voluntary compliance targeted in taxpaying is purely determined by the morality of each taxpayer. The novelty of this research is the topic very interesting since there have been many topics talking about tax planning, self-corruption by taxpayers (an effort to reduce the reported amount of income tax), or some efforts to analyze influencing factors on the taxpayer's compliance, but does not study the definitions form taxpayer perspective. The understanding of taxpayers' regulatory compliance still remains a big question. There have been some studies discussing about the taxpayers' regulatory compliance. Its variety of variables covers: 1) tax cognition, 2) tax understanding, 3) sunset policy, 4) tax amnesty, 5) tax sanction, 6) taxpayer awareness, 7) tax authorities service, 8) taxpayer's willingness, 9) perception on service effectiveness, 10) tax automation, 11) taxpayer's environment, 12) tax tariff, and 13) many more. A number of studies on the taxpayers' regulatory compliance mentioned indicate that this topic is still a special concern, and the main focus tends to center on the factors affecting on the taxpayers' regulatory compliance. This study does not refocus on influencing factors on the taxpayers' regulatory compliance. This study aims to criticize the understanding of the prospective and the taxpayers' about the taxpayers' regulatory compliance. It is sometimes measured from administrative regulation, punctuality, or willingness for payment. Unfortunately, self-understanding about the taxpayers' regulatory compliance has not been seriously taken for implementation. The compliance model of dependent foreign policy argues that dependent states will implement the foreign policy preferences of their dominant economic partners. Despite its failure to deliver strong empirical results, compliance remains dominant within the study of dependent foreign policy. This article examines compliance's problems and explains its endurance within the subfield of international relations. Six cases drawn from the Hurtado and Febres Cordero administrations in Ecuador during the 1980s are analyzed to evaluate compliance's three critical assumptions about the dependent foreign policy process: the unitary actor, core-periphery bargaining, and divergent preferences between core and periphery. In only one of the cases do compliance's assumptions hold true and does compliance account for Ecuador's foreign policy. Flaws in the bargaining assumption and the divergent preferences assumption account for the model's poor description of the process behind many dependent states' foreign policies.

Tubercular infection is still a pervasive public health problem in Nepal despite the massive efforts of National Health Service stakeholders. High bacterial infectivity, transmissibility, increasing drug resistance and non compliance to the therapy have been adding up challenges to prevention and control of tuberculosis. This study was conducted to observe the treatment compliance pattern among new pulmonary sputum smear positive cases of tuberculosis. A cross sectional study was carried out in the year 2009. The 114 new smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis patients registered in the six selected DOTS centres of the Banke Disrtict were randomly selected. Participants were selected from each DOTS centre by probability proportionate sampling methods. Data were analyzed by SPSS (11.0 Version) and P< 0.05 was considered as significant. Overall compliance to DOTS was 86.80 percent; of these, 57.00 percent showed excellent and regular compliance followed by nearly 30 percent good compliance. And 13.20 percent participants were non complaint to DOTS therapy. Positive Family behaviors were positively associated with compliance while alcohol consumption was found to be negatively associated with compliance however; age, sex and income were found to be non significant factors for compliance. Feeling of getting cure even before the course of DOTS therapy (feeling better after 2-3 months regular treatment) and drinking habits were found to be the major causes of non compliance. Supportive family behaviors and avoidance of alcohol consumption may promote the compliance. Excellent treatment compliance in the face of many odds is highly encouraging and the pattern can be useful in treatment despite little non compliances; furthermore compliance can be enhanced by acting on these causes of non compliances. This research aims to describe the effectiveness of supervisory functions in Islamic banking and finance in Indonesia. To this end, this work uses descriptive quantitative research applying Library Approach. As an intermediary institution based on sharia principles, sharia banks must perform two compliances, namely sharia principle and law compliance. The application of these compliances is not only required for good corporate governance and diverse products of sharia bank, but also for financial deeds made by a notary. Therefore, financial deeds in sharia banks must reflect the sharia compliance principle instead of only reflecting the law compliance. Special concern about sharia compliance has become authority scope from the Sharia Supervisory Board. Thus, Sharia Supervisory Board does not only ensure the application of sharia compliance but also every deed based on Islamic principles built by a notary. Failure to fulfill the sharia principles in a sharia bank financing deed can cause such deed to be null and void.

What kind of phenomenon is it when ordinary people in the United Kingdom unexpectedly abide by government advice on social distancing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, even anticipating constraints on their activities? These happenings demand that we engage anthropologically with compliance – acts or activities that conform, submit or adapt to rules or to the demands of others. At present, there is no ‘anthropology of compliance’. Rather, the discipline has inherited traditions of thought about compliance – as a necessary aspect of sociability or a morally suspect complicity, demanding resistance. These assumptions remain unexamined, but profoundly shape anthropological scholarship. This introduction aims to show how and why compliance might be a useful heuristic for anthropology. We define compliance as that set of means by which actors strive to accommodate themselves to others in their collective life. We argue that this conception of compliance allows us to multiply the kinds of phenomena we can call ‘political’. It allows us to think about the political constitution of ‘radical’ difference, but to avoid making people identical with their cultural or conceptual worlds. By showing what compliance is and how it operates in and on social life, we ought therefore to be able to recover both specific forms of suffering and inequality and the ways in which social lives are constitutively different.

The product of resistance, R, and compliance, C ( RC time), of the entire pulmonary circulation is constant. It is unknown if this constancy holds for individual lungs. We determined R and C in individual lungs in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) patients where resistances differ between both lungs. Also, the contribution of the proximal pulmonary arteries (PA) to total lung compliance was assessed. Patients ( n = 23) were referred for the evaluation of CTEPH. Pressure was measured by right heart catheterization and flows in the main, left, and right PA by magnetic resonance imaging. Total, left, and right lung resistances were calculated as mean pressure divided by mean flow. Total, left, and right lung compliances were assessed by the pulse pressure method. Proximal compliances were derived from cross-sectional area change Δ A and systolic-diastolic pressure difference ΔP (Δ A/ΔP) in main, left, and right PA, multiplied by vessel length. The lung with the lowest blood flow was defined “low flow” (LF), the contralateral lung “high flow” (HF). Total resistance was 0.57 ± 0.28 mmHg·s−1·ml−1, and resistances of LF and HF lungs were 1.57 ± 0.2 vs. 1.00 ± 0.1 mmHg·s−1·ml−1, respectively, P < 0.0001. Total compliance was 1.22 ± 1.1 ml/mmHg, and compliances of LF and HF lung were 0.47 ± 0.11 and 0.62 ± 0.12 ml/mmHg, respectively, P = 0.01. Total RC time was 0.49 ± 0.2 s, and RC times for the LF and HF lung were 0.45 ± 0.2 and 0.45 ± 0.1 s, respectively, not different. Proximal arterial compliance, given by the sum of main, right, and left PA compliances, was only 19% of total lung compliance. The RC time of a single lung equals that of both lungs together, and pulmonary arterial compliance comes largely from the distal vasculature.

Determination of arterial compliance in vivo has long interested physiologists. Most current methods for estimating this parameter assume that compliance is constant, i.e., that arterial pressure-volume (P-V) relations are linear, and they also assume that diastolic aortic pressure decay is an exponential function of time. Both of these assumptions, however, are questionable. This study proposes improved methods of estimating compliance based on a Windkessel model of the arterial system but which utilize the area under the pressure tracing rather than the waveform itself. Formulations accounting for both linear and three hypothetical nonlinear arterial P-V relations (exponential, logarithmic, and parabolic) are presented. Data from patients with congestive heart failure and hypertension are used for illustration. Compliances assuming linear P-V relations are reasonably close to those assuming nonlinear P-V relations only at mean aortic pressure. At end-diastolic pressure the linear assumption underestimates and at peak systolic it overestimates the compliances obtained assuming nonlinear P-V relations. The simpler linear assumption still allows a first approximation to compliance, but we show that existing methods for obtaining compliance under this assumption have severe theoretical as well as practical shortcomings. Our proposed method avoids these shortcomings primarily because deviations from an exact exponential form of the pressure wave have less influence on these compliance estimates than currently used methods.

For a respiratory system with constant compliance and resistance a constant flow can occur during part or all of inspiration in two situations: when the flow is constrained to be constant throughout inspiration, such as is the case with some mechanical ventilators, and when the applied pressure is a ramp (i.e., increasing constantly with time), which may occur during mechanical ventilation and spontaneous breathing. After initial transients in pressure and flow, respectively, have decayed away both situations result in linear volume-time and pressure-time relationships. The slope of the corresponding pressure-volume line then yields an estimate of the total compliance of the respiratory system, and the intercept, divided by the constant flow, provides the total resistance. We have shown theoretically that, for a model composed of two compartments in parallel, the total compliance is the same as the static compliance and equals the sum of the compliances of the two compartments. Furthermore, this compliance is independent of the breathing frequency. However, the total resistance is, in general, a function of both the resistances and the compliances. When the time constants of the two compartments are equal the total resistance assumes its minimum value and becomes independent of the compliances. This minimum value of resistance can be obtained, regardless of the time constants, by dividing the immediate drop in airway opening pressure, obtained after occluding during steady state inspiration, by the inspiratory flow.

Barman, Scott A. Pulmonary vasoreactivity to serotonin during hypoxia is modulated by ATP-sensitive potassium channels. J. Appl. Physiol. 83(2): 569–574, 1997.—The role of ATP-sensitive K+-channel modulation in the canine pulmonary vascular response to serotonin during hypoxia was determined in the isolated blood-perfused dog lung. Pulmonary vascular resistances and compliances were measured by using vascular occlusion techniques. Under normoxia, serotonin (10−5 M) significantly increased precapillary and postcapillary resistances and pulmonary capillary pressure and decreased total vascular compliance by decreasing both microvascular and large-vessel compliances. During hypoxia, the effect of serotonin was potentiated on both precapillary and postcapillary resistance and capillary pressure, as well as on microvascular compliance and large-vessel compliance. Under normoxia, the ATP-sensitive K+-channel opener cromakalim (10−5 M) inhibited the serotonergic response on postcapillary resistance and microvascular compliance, whereas during hypoxia cromakalim inhibited the potentiated effect of serotonin on both precapillary and postcapillary resistance, capillary pressure, and both microvascular and large-vessel compliances. These results indicate that canine pulmonary vasoreactivity to serotonin is heightened under hypoxic conditions and that ATP-sensitive K+ channels modulate the pressor response to serotonin, an effect that is more pronounced during hypoxia.

Yogyakarta is one of Indonesian’s regions that has implemented the smoking ban policy. One of the points of this policy is to regulate the provision and using the smoking room in public spaces. The aim of this study is to describe for what extent that smokers complied using smoking room and the factors that affect the compliances. This study used a qualitative descriptive method. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that smokers have a very diverse compliance. Smokers in City Hall of Yogyakarta have a very low compliance in the use of smoking room. On the other hand, Yogyakarta Adisucipto Airport smokers have a quite high compliance in the use of smoking room. There are five factors used to explain this study. Awareness, attitudes, and perceptions of the law or punishment proved significantly affect to a person's compliance. These three factors have a parallel relationship to the compliance. Education and age are not proved to give effects on compliance. Both of them do not have a significant effect and does not guarantee that there will always affect a person’s compliance.

Physical compliance has been increasingly used in robotic legs, due to its advantages in terms of the mechanical regulation of leg mechanics and energetics and the passive response to abrupt external disturbances during locomotion. This article presents a review of the exploitation of physical compliance in robotic legs. Particular attention has been paid to the segmented, electrically actuated robotic legs, such that a comparable analysis can be provided. The utilization of physical compliance is divided into three main categories, depending on the setting locations and configurations, namely, (1) joint series compliance, (2) joint parallel compliance, and (3) leg distal compliance. With an overview of the representative work related to each category, the corresponding working principles and implementation processes of various physical compliances are explained. After that, we analyze in detail some of the structural characteristics and performance influences of the existing designs, including the realization method, compliance profile, damping design, and quantitative changes in terms of mechanics and energetics. In parallel, the design challenges and possible future works associated with physical compliance in robotic legs are also identified and proposed. This article is expected to provide useful paradigmatic implementations and design guidance for physical compliance for researchers in the construction of novel physically compliant robotic legs.

A simple method for including the effects of geologically realistic fractures on the seismic propagation through fractured rocks can be obtained by writing the effective compliance tensor of the fractured rock as the sum of the compliance tensor of the unfractured background rock and the compliance tensors for each set of parallel fractures or aligned fractures. The compliance tensor of each fracture set is derivable from a second rank fracture compliance tensor. For a rotationally symmetric set of fractures, the fracture compliance tensor depends on only two fracture compliances, one controlling fracture compliance normal, the other, tangential, to the plane of the fractures. The stiffness tensor, which is more useful in the consideration of elastic wave propagation through rocks, can then be obtained by inversion. The components of the excess fracture compliance tensor represent the maximum amount of information that can be obtained from seismic data. If the background rock is isotropic and the normal and shear compliance of each fracture are equal, although different from those of other fractures, the effective elastic behavior of the fractured rock is orthorhombic for any orientation distribution of fractures. A comparison of the theory with recent ultrasonic experiments on a simulated fractured medium shows near equality of the normal and shear compliance for the case of air‐filled fractures.
