This thesis explores adapting Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) to tackle challenges in distributed and dynamic data environments. This research addresses the need for efficient data mining techniques in Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT), where data is vast and continuous. The primary goals include developing scalable, flexible methods to prevent the loss of significant concepts during concept lattice construction, proposing incremental algorithms for real-time data streams, and demonstrating practical applications of these methods. The thesis starts with a comprehensive review of current knowledge representation, scalability, and FCA, emphasizing the challenges of large datasets and efficient mining techniques. A systematic literature review identifies gaps in existing FCA methods, particularly for distributed architectures, highlighting the need for new approaches to manage the exponential growth of formal concepts and dynamic data streams. Novel algorithms are introduced for merging lattices to recover lost concepts and incremental methods for constructing concept lattices. These algorithms, designed for both single-threaded and parallel execution, enhance scalability and flexibility. Practical use cases, such as an e-commerce recommendation system for the French Ski School, demonstrate the real-world benefits of the proposed methods. Empirical evaluations using synthetic and real-world datasets validate the performance, showing significant improvements in handling large, distributed data. The thesis concludes by summarizing the contributions and suggesting future research directions to further enhance FCA capabilities in distributed settings

Phasing X-ray data within the frame of the ARCIMBOLDO programs requires very accurate models and a sophisticated evaluation of the possible hypotheses. ARCIMBOLDO uses small fragments, that are placed with the maximum likelihood molecular replacement program Phaser, and are subject to density modification and autotracing with the program SHELXE. The software receives its name from the Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who used to compose portraits out of common objects such as vegetables or flowers. Out of most possible arrangements of such objects, only a still-life will result, and just a few ones will truly produce a portrait. In a similar way, from all possible placements with small protein fragments, only a few will be correct and will allow to get the full “protein’s portrait”. The work presented in this thesis has explored new ways to exploit partial information and increase the signal in the process of phasing with fragments. This has been achieved through two main pieces of software, ALIXE and SHREDDER. With the spherical mode in ARCIMBOLDO_SHREDDER, the aim is to derive compact fragments starting from a distant homolog to our unknown protein of interest. Then, locations for these fragments are searched with Phaser. These include strategies for refining the fragments against the experimental data and giving them more degrees of freedom. With ALIXE, the aim is to combine information in reciprocal space from partial solutions, such as the ones produced by SHREDDER, and use the coherence between them to guide their merging and to increase the information content, so that the step of density modification and autotracing starts from a more complete solution. Even if partial solutions contain both correct and incorrect information, the combination of solutions that share some similarity will allow to get a better approximation to the correct structure. Both ARCIMBOLDO_SHREDDER and ALIXE have been used on test data for development and optimisation but also on datasets from previously unknown structures, which have been solved thanks to these programs. These programs are distributed through the website of the group but also through software suites of general use in the crystallographic community such as CCP4 and SBGrid.

The aim of this thesis is the study of the innovative glycosylation machinery used by the Mimiviridae family for the glycosylation of the fibrils sourrounding their capsid, using Mimivirus, Moumouvirus australensis and Megavirus chilensis as prototypes of lineages A, B and C, respectively. Mimivirus fibrils are decorated with two distinct polysaccharide: one is characterized by a linear disaccharide repeating unit made of 3)-α-L-Rha-(1→3)-α-D-GlcNAc-(1→, with a pyruvic acid branched at position 4,6 of GlcNAc.; the other has a branched repeating unit with the sequence 2)-α-L-Rha-(1→3)-β-D-GlcNAc-(1→ in the linear backbone and rhamnose further branched at position 3 by viosamine methylated at position 2 and acetylated at position 4. We suggested that Megavirus chiliensis fibrils are decorated by more than one polysaccharides/oligosaccharide species, one having this trisaccharide: α-L-4OMe-RhaNAc-(1→3)-α-L-RhaNAc-(1→3)-α-L-RhaNAc-(1→. Moumouvirus australensis fibrils are decorated with glucosamine and quinovosamine in addition to the rare sugar, bacillosamine. Starting from this experimental data, it was possible to identify new genes involved in glycosylation. As a result, the published nine-gene cluster of Mimivirus was extended to thirteen genes. A different cluster of fourteen genes was identified in Moumouvirus australensis, representing the first glycosylation gene cluster identified for the B lineage.Among the glycosylation genes, the function of L142 was investigated in vitro, demonstrating that it is an N-acetyltransferase. To conclude, the fibrils of Mimiviridae are heavily glycosylated and the type of sugars and their organization depends on their lineage

Steel-concrete composite structures are widely used throughout the world for buildings and bridges. A distinguishing feature of this form of construction is the combination of concrete and steel components to achieve enhanced structural performance.
The time-dependent response of concrete and its infl uence on the service behaviour and design of composite structures are the main focus of this SED. For the fi rst time, a publication combines a state-of-the-art review of the research with the available design specifi cations of Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and USA. This publication intends to enhance the awareness of the service response of composite structures and of the latest research and standards’ developments. It is aimed at designers and researchers alike.
The review of research available in open literature is provided and arranged according to structural typologies, i. e. slabs, beams, and columns. It serves as background information for current service design rules and provides insight into the most recent research advancements. The review of available design guidelines presents the similarities and differences of the recommended service design procedures infl uenced by concrete time effects. Selected case studies of building and bridge projects show possible design approaches and the rationale required when dealing with the time-dependent response and design of composite structures. The authors of this publication are design engineers and academics involved in the service design and research on the time-dependent response of composite structures.

New steel production processes have led to a remarkable improvement in steel products within the last few years, and now allows steels to be produced according to the desired mechanical and chemical properties. High-Performance Steel (HPS) is the designation given to this new generation of steels that offer higher performance not only in terms of strength but also toughness, weldability, cold formability and corrosion resistance, compared to the traditionally used mild steel grades.

The development of HPS goes with today's increased demand for slender lightweight structures, as for example in bridge design and the design of high-rise buildings, where there is a strong requirement to use high-strength materials in combination with good execution and fabrication properties. However, on the structural engineering side there is a need for knowledge on these new steel grades, and quite often design codes do not provide sufficient information to fully exploit the advantageous properties of HPS.

The present volume provides an overview of the development and application of HPS on an international level. This is done by giving information on, for example, the production process, the chemical and mechanical properties, the relevant design and fabrication standards and on recent research results. Approximately fifteen included examples of realised applications aim to provide detailed information based on existing technical solutions, and to point out the major benefits when using HPS in comparison to mild steels.

The document is thus not a monograph but an assembly of contributions from different countries. lt is separated into chapters related to different countries, namely the USA, Canada, Japan and Europe, all of them providing a state-of-the-art report on HPS.

The monograph substantiates the concept of multilevel reinforcement of structural heavy concrete, including the level of nano-, micro-reinforcement of cement stone with tubular carbon nanomaterials and macro-reinforcement of the concrete structure with steel fiber. Fiber-reinforced concrete compositions have been developed to determine the optimal content of steel fiber and carbon nanomaterial during monoarming, the properties of fiber-reinforced concrete of multilevel reinforcement with a combination of nano-, micro-reinforcement with tubular UNM and macro-reinforcement with steel fiber have been studied. A technique has been developed for a multiparametric assessment of the properties of fiber reinforced concrete of multilevel polydisperse reinforcement in order to determine strength, crack resistance and deformability in laboratory and building conditions. A set of technological measures for conducting concrete works with the preparation and use of fiber reinforced concrete of multilevel polydisperse reinforcement in the construction of monolithic building structures is proposed. A comprehensive methodology for assessing the quality of fiber concrete in building structures has been developed.

The aim of the present Structural Engineering Document, a state-of-the-art report, is to review the progress made worldwide in the use of fibre reinforced polymers as structural components in bridges until the end of the year 2000.
Due to their advantageous material properties such as high specific strength, a large tolerance for frost and de-icing salts and, furthermore, short installation times with minimum traffic interference, fibre reinforced polymers have matured to become valuable alternative building materials for bridge structures. Today, fibre reinforced polymers are manufactured industrially to semi-finished products and ccimplete structural components, which can be easily and quickly installed or erected on site.
Examples of semi-finished products and structural components available are flexible tension elements, profiles stiff in bending and sandwich panels. As tension elements, especially for the purpose of strengthening, strips and sheets are available, as weil as reinforcing bars for concrete reinforcement and prestressing members for internal prestressing or external use. Profiles are available for beams and columns, and sandwich constructions especially for bridge decks. During the manufacture of the structural components fibre-optic sensors for continuous monitoring can be integrated in the materials. Adhesives are being used more and more for joining components.
Fibre reinforced polymers have been used in bridge construction since the mid-1980s, mostly for the strengthening of existing structures, and increasingly since the mid-1990s as pilot projects for new structures. In the case of new structures, three basic types of applications can be distinguished: concrete reinforcement, new hybrid structures in combination with traditional construction materials, and all-composite applications, in which the new materials are used exclusively.
This Structural Engineering Document also includes application and research recommendations with particular reference to Switzerland.
This book is aimed at both students and practising engineers, working in the field of fibre reinforced polymers, bridge design, construction, repair and strengthening.

AbstractMicro-cracks in constructions are unavoidable due to freezing, thawing, and shrinkage in concrete, as well as when concrete is exposed to the seafloor, on offshore platforms, or in tunnels and sewage pipes. This exposure also has an impact on the durability and service life of concrete. Standard healing materials are not long-lasting and are difficult to mend fine cracks with. According to new research, bacterial concrete is an effective approach for repairing concrete and boosting its longevity. The problem has been reduced using calcite-producing microorganisms that do not pollute the environment and are sustainable to produce. In the presence of carbonate ions, bacteria release calcium precipitate, a process known as bio-calcification. This study includes four blends as (1) normal concrete, (2) Bacillus cereus with normal concrete, (3) Bacillus subtilis with normal concrete, and (4) combined cereus and subtilis with normal concrete. Blend 4 provided the lowest slump value of 70 mm, the highest splitting tensile strength of 2.83 MPa, and the highest flexural strength of 4.37 MPa. This combination was more sustainable and cost-effective because it used less water and cement. Blend 4’s self-healing ability was remarkable, as the microcracks were cured after 7 days. Similarly, Blend 3 had a higher compressive strength of 33 MPa.

AbstractIt is an important means to ensure the safe operation of dam to establish accurate and effective deformation monitoring data analysis and prediction model. In view of the complex conditions in dam safety monitoring, there are many unknown or uncertain factors, and they are difficult to have a single model to apply all problems. The optimal weighted combination method is constructed by combining neural network model and support vector machine model, which is used in the deformation monitoring analysis of concrete dam. The research shows that the prediction results of the optimal weighted combination model are highly consistent with the measured results, and have certain feasibility and practicability in the dam deformation monitoring work.

AbstractThe combination of additive manufacturing (LPBF) and plastic injection molding offers great benefits for functional integration and thereby the functionality of parts, components and systems. By manufacturing cooling channels as very thin-walled structures, short laser processing time is needed to produce these parts. The combination with plastic overmolding allows the mechanical loads to be absorbed, while at the same time utilizing the freedom of shape of the LPBF process. In order to prevent the structures from collapsing during overmolding or to ensure that they do not have to be very thick-walled in order to withstand the high injection pressures, the structures are closed, so that the base-powder is still contained in the structure during the overmolding. After opening the overmolded components, the powder can be extracted and reused. This technique offers great potential for high functional integration and new possibilities in terms of realizing internal cooling structures of electric traction machines. Other advantages that can be exploited are the thermally good connection due to the material bond and the possibility of local reinforcement due to the design freedom of the insert. Thanks to the injection-molded component, complex geometries can also be produced without additional unit costs.

A methodology for calculating the correlation factors to combine the long-term dynamic stress components of ship structure from various loads in seas is presented. The methodology is based on a theory of a stationary ergodic narrow-banded Gaussian process. The total combined stress in short-tem sea states is expressed by linear summation of the component stresses with the corresponding combination factors. This expression is proven to be mathematically exact when applied to a single random sea. The long-term total stress is similarly expressed by linear summation of component stresses with appropriate combination factors. The stress components considered here are due to wave-induced vertical bending moment, wave-induced horizontal bending moment, external wave pressure and internal tank pressure. For application, the stress combination factors are calculated for longitudinal stiffeners in cargo and ballast tanks of a crude oil tanker at midship section. It is found that the combination factors strongly depend on wave heading and period in the short-term sea states. It is also found that the combination factors are not sensitive to the selected probability of exceedance level of the stress in the long-term sense.

The solution to many engineering problems is obtained through the combination of analytical, computational and experimental methods. In many cases, cost or size constraints limit testing of full-scale articles. Similitude allows observations made in the laboratory to be used to extrapolate the behavior to full-scale system by establishing relationships between the results obtained in a scaled experiment and those anticipated for the full-scale prototype. This paper describes the application of the Buckingham Pi theorem to develop a set of non-dimensional parameters that are appropriate for describing the problem of a distributed load applied to the rostrum of the paddlefish. This problem is of interest because previous research has demonstrated that the rostrum is a very efficient structural system. The ultimate goal is to estimate the response of a complex, bio-inspired structure based on the rostrum to blast load. The derived similitude laws are verified through a series of numerical experiments having a maximum error of 3.39%.

This report contains a summary of past research and new knowledge about the effectiveness of mitigation measures aimed at reducing animal-vehicle collisions and at providing safe crossing opportunities for wildlife. The measures are aimed at terrestrial large bodied wild mammal species, free roaming large livestock species (e.g. cattle, horses), free roaming large feral species (e.g. “wild” horses and burros), and small animal species (amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals). While mitigation is common, it is best to follow a three-step approach: avoidance, mitigation, and compensation or “off-site” mitigation. If reducing collisions with large wild mammals is the only objective, the most effective measures include roadside animal detection systems, wildlife culling, wildlife relocation, anti-fertility treatments, wildlife barriers (fences),and wildlife fences in combination with wildlife crossing structures. If the objectives also include maintaining or improving connectivity for large wild mammals, then wildlife barriers (fences) in combination with wildlife crossing structures are most effective. Measures for large domestic mammal species are largely similar, though for free roaming livestock there are legal, moral and ethical issues. For small animal species, temporary or permanent road closure and road removal are sometimes implemented, but barriers in combination with crossing structures are the most common.

Resumo:
The seismic assessment of structures is a critical step to increase community resilience under earthquake hazards. This research aims to develop a Physics-reinforced Machine Learning (PrML) paradigm for metamodeling of nonlinear structures under seismic hazards using artificial intelligence. Structural metamodeling, a reduced-fidelity surrogate model to a more complex structural model, enables more efficient performance-based design and analysis, optimizing structural designs and ease the computational effort for reliability fragility analysis, leading to globally efficient designs while maintaining required levels of accuracy. The growing availability of high-performance computing has improved this analysis by providing the ability to evaluate higher order numerical models. However, more complex models of the seismic response of various civil structures demand increasing amounts of computing power. In addition, computational cost greatly increases with numerous iterations to account for optimization and stochastic loading (e.g., Monte Carlo simulations or Incremental Dynamic Analysis). To address the large computational burden, simpler models are desired for seismic assessment with fragility analysis. Physics reinforced Machine Learning integrates physics knowledge (e.g., scientific principles, laws of physics) into the traditional machine learning architectures, offering physically bounded, interpretable models that require less data than traditional methods. This research introduces a PrML framework to develop fragility curves using the combination of neural networks of domain knowledge. The first aim involves clustering and selecting ground motions for nonlinear response analysis of archetype buildings, ensuring that selected ground motions will include as few ground motions as possible while still expressing all the key representative events the structure will probabilistically experience in its lifetime. The second aim constructs structural PrML metamodels to capture the nonlinear behavior of these buildings utilizing the nonlinear Equation of Motion (EOM). Embedding physical principles, like the general form of the EOM, into the learning process will inform the system to stay within known physical bounds, resulting in interpretable results, robust inferencing, and the capability of dealing with incomplete and scarce data. The third and final aim applies the metamodels to probabilistic seismic response prediction, fragility analysis, and seismic performance factor development. The efficiency and accuracy of this approach are evaluated against existing physics-based fragility analysis methods.

Abundant gull populations in North America have led to a variety of conflicts with people. Gulls cause damage at aquaculture facilities and other properties, and often collide with aircraft. Their use of structures on and near water results in excessive amounts of bird droppings on boats and docks. Their presence near outdoor dining establishments, swimming beaches, and recreational sites can lead to negative interactions with people. Large amounts of gull fecal material pollutes water and beaches resulting in drinking water contamination and swim bans. A combination of dispersal techniques, exclusion and limited lethal control may reduce damage to an acceptable level. Gulls are classified as a migratory bird species and are protected by federal and, in most cases, state laws. In the United States, gulls may be taken only with a permit issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Occasionally, an additional permit is required from the state wildlife management agency.

Most wildlife mitigation measures along highways are aimed at improving human safety, reducing direct wildlife mortality, and providing safe crossing opportunities for wildlife. Fences in combination with wildlife crossing structures are the most effective combination of mitigation measures to achieve these objectives. For fences to reliably reduce collisions with large wild mammals by 80% or more, at least 5 kilometers (3 miles) of road length needs to be fenced, including a buffer zone that extends well beyond the known hotspots for wildlife-vehicle collisions. Collisions that still occur within the fenced road sections tend to be concentrated near the fence-ends. In addition, gaps in fences, including at access roads, can result in concentrations of collisions inside fenced road sections. Gates are commonly used at gaps in the fence at low traffic volume access roads, but they are often left open allowing wildlife to access the road corridor. While cattle guards or wildlife guards can be effective for some ungulate species, double wide cattle or wildlife guards consisting of round bars or bridge grate material, situated above a pit, are generally recommended for ungulates. However, such guards are not a substantial barrier for species with paws, including many carnivore species. Electrified mats or electrified guards can be a barrier for both ungulates and species with paws, but to prevent animals from jumping across the mat, they need to be 4.6-6.6 m (15-22 ft)) wide. For this project, a combination of wildlife guards and electrified barriers on top of these wildlife guards was evaluated. Both electrified mats that were tested (Crosstek and BS Fabrications) on top of existing wildlife guards resulted in a near absolute barrier for both ungulates and species with paws (97.9% barrier for the 2 deer species combined, 100% barrier for coyotes and black bears); an improvement to a wildlife guard only without an electrified mat (89.3% for the 2 deer species combined, 54.5% barrier for coyotes and 45.5% barrier for black bears). Based on the images, there is evidence that a shock is delivered to the animals that touch the electrified mats and that most of the animals respond by returning to the habitat side of the barrier. Specifically for bears, if it was not for the electrified barriers, likely at least 3 black bears and 1 grizzly bear would have crossed into the fenced road corridor where they would have been exposed to vehicles.

In modern electronic equipment, especially mass-produced, it is extremely important to correctly determine the initial technical requirements for the product, which in the process of production and operation should allow to carry out innovative modification of the product without changing the fundamental basis of its design, circuit solutions and combination of materials and component parts.

Resumo:
Cracks and their formations in concrete structures have been a common and long-lived problem, mainly due to the intrinsic brittleness of the concrete. Concrete structures, such as rigid pavement and bridge decks, are prone to deformations and deteriorations caused by shrinkage, temperature fluctuation, and traffic load, which can affect their service life. Rehabilitation of concrete structures is expensive and challenging—not only from maintenance viewpoints but also because they cannot be used for services during maintenance. It is critical to significantly improve the ductility of concrete to overcome such issues and to enable better infrastructure quality. To this end, the self-healing cementitious composites (SHCC) investigated in this work could be a promising solution to the aforementioned problems. In this project, the team has designed a series of cementitious composites to investigate their mechanical performances and self-healing abilities. Firstly, various types of fibers were investigated for improving ductility of the designed SHCC. To enhance the self-healing of SHCC, we proposed and examined that the combination of the internal curing method with SHCC mixture design can further improve self-healing performance. Three types of internal curing agents were used on the SHCC mixture design, and their self-healing efficiency was evaluated by multiple destructive and non-destructive tests. Results indicated a significant improvement in the self-healing capacity with the incorporation of internal curing agents such as zeolite and lightweight aggregate. To control the fiber distribution and workability of the SHCC, the mix design was further adjusted by controlling rheology using different types of viscosity modifiers. The team also explored the feasibility of the incorporation of colloidal nano-silica into the mix design of SHCC. Results suggest that optimum amounts of nano-silica have positive influence on self-healing efficiency and mechanical properties of the SHCC. Better hydration was also achieved by adding the nano-silica. The bonding strength of the SHCC with conventional concrete was also improved. At last, a standardized mixing procedure for the large scale SHCC was drafted and proposed.

Attic fires pose many hazards for the fire service. When a fire occurs in an attic, it is common it goes unnoticed/reported until smoke or flames are visible from the outside of the structure. Because they take longer to detect, attic fires are more dangerous for firefighters and residents. In a fire situation, the attic ventilation system, which is designed to reduce moisture accumulation by drawing fresh air low from the eaves and exhausting moisture laden warm air near the peak, create an optimal fire growth and spread situation by supplying oxygen to the fire and exhausting hot gases. An estimated 10,000 residential attic fires are reported to U.S. fire departments each year and cause an estimated 30 civilian deaths, 125 civilian injuries and $477 million in property loss. The location of the attic creates several difficulties for the fire service. Firefighters must decide whether to fight the fire from inside the structure, from the outside or a combination of the two. This the decision is complicated by the constant hazard of ceiling collapse, which has the potential to rapidly deteriorate conditions in the living spaces. A piece of gypsum board may fall or be pulled from the ceiling making the relatively clear and cool conditions in the living space change very quickly endangering firefighters executing a search and rescue operation as part of their life safety mission. Further complicating the decision are the hazards associated with roof structure collapse, creating deadly conditions for firefighters operating on and under the roof. Structural collapse accounted for 180 firefighter deaths between 1979 and 2002 of which one-third occurred in residential structures . Many of these incidents involved a roof falling on firefighters or firefighters falling through the roof during firefighting operations on attic fires. The purpose of this study is to increase firefighter safety by providing the fire service with scientific knowledge on the dynamics of attic and exterior fires and the influence of coordinated fire mitigation tactics from full-scale fire testing in realistic residential structures.
