The purpose of this study was to formulate a preliminary conceptual perception about how Kuwaiti college students in the United States use and perceive electronic media. This qualitative study has sought to recognize the utilization habits and perception of Kuwaiti college students in the USA toward electronic media. The study examines the reasons for the high degree of dependency on electronic media by Kuwaiti students in the USA and the most significant features and properties that are available by electronic media, which attract youth attention. This research conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with a sample of 15 Kuwaiti college students in the United States. It was concluded that Kuwaiti college students are the major users of recent technology and pioneers of electronic and social media. It also seeks for future investigations to understand whether the demographic characteristics of Kuwaiti college students are affecting their media utilization habits.

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to examine the career ladder achievement, length of service in the vocation, salary, career status and professional aspirations of community college transfer (two-plus-two) graduates and university (four-year) graduates from universities and colleges offering academic and professional training in news-editorial journalism. Procedure. California newspapers were randomly selected and 436 surveys were mailed out to the editorial staffs of 36 weekly and 19 daily newspapers. Responses were received from 12 daily newspapers and 31 weekly newspapers. The final survey population was 111 editors and reporters working on daily newspapers and 70 editors and reporters working on weekly newspapers. Each member of the survey population was asked to give academic information and employment and salary history before and after graduation from a college or university. The period of employment was from 1970 to 1984. The survey focused on writing and editing experiences and sought an evaluation of journalism education and professional experiences. Descriptive information and differences between three identified groups (University-Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, Community College-Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, and University-Bachelor of Arts in Other Field) were analyzed using Chi Square and analysis of variance. Sources of significance were further analyzed using Scheffe tests of multiple comparisons. Findings and Conclusions. The level of achievement, both personally and professionally, indicates continued post-baccalaureate equality among each of the three groups under study. The sample population worked an average of 6.81 years. Men worked more years in the profession than women; community college women worked the least number of years. Community college journalists tended to change jobs less often; women journalists with degrees in other fields tended to have more jobs. Graduates with degrees in other fields entered the journalism profession later than did those trained in journalism. No differences were found in the career advancement and level of leadership of the three groups. Salaries between the three groups were not significantly different. The average salary per month in 1984 was $1846. Women journalists earned less than men, and community college women earned the least. Recommendations. The central question still to be answered is whether it is an advantage or disadvantage for the person who wishes to become a journalist to begin as a freshman at a four-year university or begin as a freshman in a community college and complete his/her studies at the university. Wills, Joseph B. "Picking the experts : the effect of ProfNet on news media choosing sources provided by university public relations offices". Scholarly Commons, 2000. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/532.

Resumo:
Because of expanding news programming and a greater emphasis on interpretative reporting, journalists have an increasing need for experts to interview for articles. One common source for experts is colleges and universities, which are interested in gaining the attention that media references to their faculty bring. Past studies of media use of experts show bias toward high-status sources. An Internet-based service called ProfNet gives university public relations practitioners opportunities to offer experts to journalists who have posted queries related to future stories. University public relations practitioners who use ProfNet were surveyed to examine criteria for success in promoting experts. The results found frequent and rapid responses to journalists' queries correlated positively with success in getting experts used in articles. Institutional size as well as complexity, i.e. the number and type of academic degrees awarded, also correlated positively with use of campus experts, though the size of the correlation was not as great as the correlation between frequency of response and frequency of media placements using ProfNet. Institutional reputation, as operationalized by magazine rankings, did not correlate with success. Future study is needed to determine the relationship between the two indicators of media choices of expert sources: effort on the part of public relations offices, and the size and complexity of institutions.

The work conducted in Canadian television newsrooms has significant implications for journalism, news and society. This research investigates how the routines and decision-making processes of two local private television newsrooms form a "working ideology," potentially influencing choices relating to news content. Data were collected through interviews with employees of two Ottawa newsrooms, both technical and editorial. This thesis finds a 'dumbed down' routine may have serious implications for content, including increasing bureaucratic dependency and centralization of story choice. It finds that dwindling resources result in aggressive efficiencies, including the new emergence of a competency gap between newsroom needs and available skill sets of employees. Finally, it finds that soft integration between news and advertiser interests is occurring. The findings raise important questions about the ability of Canadian local television news to deliver the socially important stories the public expects. Keywords. Television journalism, work routines, news objectivity, professional ideologies, television news industry.

As the agriculture industry and biotechnologies grow and spread, it has become increasingly important to understand the science and policies surrounding it. Most recently the G.M.O labeling debate has had a high profile in the media and the public with three states having bills and initiatives up for vote on this issue. The research question presented was whether local news coverage of G.M.Os was framed more emotionally in comparison to coverage in major newspapers in the U.S. A content analysis was preformed on both local and national newspapers articles on G.M.O labeling and GE technology during 2013 and 2014 to determine how G.M.O labeling was framed in each category.

How does television news present the world to American viewers? This study employs a content analysis of selected international news stories reported by the four major American networks between October and December 1995 to answer this question. International news has been the target of much critique, which this study puts to an empirical test. Specifically, claims about unfairly negative coverage of the Third World were supported, but not in the entirety in which they are often voiced. Coverage of international events is primarily crisis-oriented and secondarily politics-oriented and focuses on events with American involvement. The prevalence of episodic international coverage and the corresponding lack of stories conveying substantive information makes television a less than ideal source to learn about the "big picture" in global events. Methodologically, this study uses new, more precise measuring techniques, including the often omitted visual analysis of newscasts and the concept of unifying story themes.

Resumo:
Todays globalized network communication initiates new interactive formats, transforming not only the dissemination, but - increasingly - the production of news. The one-way flow of news from a news outlet to the audience has been replaced by a network structure. Following Castells concept of the network (1996) as the central model of information structures, I perpetuate this paradigmatic shift and suggest that networks also transform the professional journalism sphere in many world regions. A revised sphere of journalism is taking shape in which an increasingly global flow of news is evolving and a multiple platform structure of journalism is taking shape in which boundaries between traditional media outlets of print, radio, and television and between national and foreign journalism are blurring. Furthermore, I argue that a globalized journalistic network sphere is emerging which involves traditional journalistic outlets and bloggers, media activists, so-called citizen journalists, or user-generated content providers alike. These new journalistic spheres of connectivity establish new (and continuous) links between journalists, their sources as well as their audiences. This fundamental change creates new professional levels of connectivity on one hand and on the other, has severe strategic and organizational implications for the management of print, broadcast and online news outlets. Within this new network sphere of journalistic practice, the roles of journalistic outlets change. This work suggests a framework that helps to understand journalistic organization today, with innovative work structures based on digital technologies transforming the character and in effect substituting the model of top-down journalism models by a model that is far more complicated. I argue that within an evolving global news sphere, information flows are multidirectional. Decentralization and non-linearity become the key parameters defining news flows at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The character of this network in the journalism sphere is transnational, crossmedia, and cross professions. Based on results of thirteen qualitative interviews with media practitioners in Germany, the US and the UK, I argue that a new geography of journalism is taking shape in which journalistic outlets are being transformed into nodes. These nodes are arranged in a dense net of information gathers, producers and disseminators and the interactive connections among them constitute what I want to call network journalism.

Resumo:

Though eating disorders are a serious public health threat, misinformation about these potentially deadly diseases is widespread. This study examines eating disorder information from a wide variety of sources including medical journals, news reports, and popular social activist authors. Examples of misinformation were identified, and three aspects of eating disorders (prevalence, mortality, and etiology) were chosen as key indicators of scientific illiteracy about those illnesses. A case study approach was then adopted to trace examples of misinformation to their original sources whenever possible. A dozen examples include best-selling books, national eating disorder information clearinghouses; the news media; documentary feature films; and a PBS television Nova documentary program. The results provide an overview of the ways in which valid information becomes flawed, including poor journalism, lack of fact-checking, plagiarism, and typographical errors. Less obvious—and perhaps even more important—much of the misinformation results from scientific research being co-opted to promote specific sociopolitical agendas. These results highlight a significant gap in science communication between researchers, the medical community, and the public regarding these diseases, and recommendations to address the problem are offered.

This paper examines coverage of the 2012 presidential election by television news organizations on Twitter and their legacy medium. Motivated by the possibility that those who are not interested in politics might pick up relevant political information from the individuals or news organization they follow, this study found that tweets about the election by CBS, CNN, ABC, MSNBC, NBC, and FNN were nearly devoid of substantive political information. This research will be important as news consumption habits continue to evolve and the Twitter audience continues to grow, it is important that we understand the content that is being put forward through these mediums. This will help to evaluate the democratic value of news content in terms of its role in informing the American public.

Sierra Leone's brutal civil war devastated the country's population and left its infrastructure in disarray. Over the last decade, international organizations have provided financial and technical assistance to many areas of society, including journalists and the media. Media assistance programs, or MAPs, are designed to promote democratization and development by fostering a free and independent press. This free press – also known as the fourth estate – is intended to disseminate accurate and unbiased information upon which citizens can base informed choices in their personal and political lives. In this thesis, it is first argued that current underlying political and socio-economic conditions in Sierra Leone prevent the emergence of a true fourth estate, despite the efforts of MAPs. Secondly, it is argued that MAPs could have a greater impact through a more holistic approach to media assistance, engaging in institution-building to target the root causes of Sierra Leone's biased and politicized media landscape.

Since the rise of citizen reporters, blogging, wikis, and pro-am newsroom collaborations, both the professional and academic spheres have come to contest the very definition of a journalist. These analyses, however, often fail to consider the historical complexity of the processes of professionalization in journalism, its systematic institutionalization as an intellectual endeavor, and the fact that there is not – and never has been – a single unifying activity defined as journalism. The lack of a consensual body of knowledge within journalism studies as a field of inquiry, and journalism's problematic status as a discipline within the critical humanities and the social sciences in general, only exacerbate this state of affairs. This thesis proposes to address these issues by reconsidering the historical narratives which shape them, in order to offer a critical review of the social advancement of the 'profession' and the institutionalization of journalism. The first chapter of this dissertation consists of an attempt to problematize the nature of journalism by providing a brief history of the haphazard, unplanned, and largely accidental way that journalism came into being by describing how journalism is the articulation of many genres and traditions of writing and communication. This provides a historical background for the second chapter, which explores the materialization of the values and ideologies that structure Anglo-American journalism as a profession in the nineteenth century, and which still form the basis of its occupational norms today. Following a discussion of the emergence of the reporter, both the modern ideal of objectivity in Anglo-American journalism and the rise of professionalism are situated within the broader context of modernism. The third chapter offers a review of the literature on the professionalization of journalism by considering the journalistic occupation within the system of professions, drawing on approaches from sociology, political economy, communications, and journalism studies. These chapters provide the foundation for an analysis of the emergence of journalism education, which has been historically linked to the notion of journalism as a profession. Considering journalism education as an agent of professional legitimization, the fourth chapter aims to historicize the establishment of journalism departments in a university setting in the United States and Canada by tracing the origins of models of journalism schools in order to provide a context for the study of journalism education and training. The fifth and final chapter of this thesis builds on the preceding chapters to demonstrate how all of these complex tensions contribute to the uncomfortable position that journalistic training occupies within the university. Academically, journalism draws on the humanities and the social sciences, while remaining outside of both. Pedagogically, journalism educators are asked to offer a 'critical' approach to phenomena while also teaching students practical skills of use to those seeking professional careers. This chapter also explores the troubled marriage between communication studies and journalism, culminating in the recent call for the reorganization of the various subjects of journalism (i.e. law, ethics, communication theory, political economy of journalism, media history, etc.) into a single field of Journalism Studies. The dissertation concludes by looking at the continuing impact of these unresolved difficulties on journalism education today.

Journalism as an institution has long sanctioned the status of witnessing as one of its favoured means of providing an accounting of reality. Due to shrinking resources and dwindling levels of public trust, many "traditional" news organizations are losing ground as the public's witnesses, especially with regard to conflict or disaster-stricken zones. One part of this erosion in professional foreign correspondence is that nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have begun to appropriate the witnessing practice of the news genre, and in so doing, position themselves—not just as news sources for journalists—but as news producers themselves. Such NGOs face the difficult demands of gaining and maintaining support from their publics and constituencies without the cultural authority that "official" journalists enjoy. Guided by a sociocognitive approach to genre, this thesis tells the survival story of news witnessing in disaster and conflict zones. It employs a multiple case study of three NGOS, namely Médecins Sans Frontières, Reporters sans frontières, and the Democratic Voice of Burma, to explore how NGOs consolidate themselves as witnesses in reference to three varying figures of a witnessing agent: 1) witness as a third party; 2) witness as a survivor; and 3) witness as an expert. In so doing, these NGOs transgress the jurisdictional boundary established and policed by professional newsmakers that hold sway over the conventions of news production practices. They also actively repurpose witnessing so as not to objectively depict a world as it is, as journalists are expected to do, but to help reconstruct it, as NGOs believe it ought to be.

Newspapers rely on content-based documentary photography to visually communicate current news events. As circulations declined in the mid-1980s, media owners persuaded editors into mixing traditional hard news on their front pages with reader-friendly soft news features. Content-based visual journalism was challenged by the encroachment of visual fluff, altering the character projected to readers.

Today, newspapers struggle to evolve into online “news organizations” and visual journalism competes with entertainment, advertising, and marketing to attract viewers. The central question for the future is, will the marketing pressure continue to dilute visual journalism and overload viewers with visual distractions? And, how will design and organization influence the viewers’ perception of credibility?

Through a series of elicitation interviews, this research examined how the visual choices that online newspapers make — their “visual character” — influence audience perceptions of news credibility. The responses showed that readers’ perceptions of credibility are influenced by the visual content on a newspaper Web site. The study participants gauged credibility based on factors like photography use, competing advertising, and design organization. The study also found that linking visual branding to the newspaper print version could add to credibility.

Given the increasing popularity and effect of online media, especially Twitter, as news sources, this study was designed to examine Saudis’ behaviors toward Twitter with regard to newspapers and information delivery and the role that Twitter plays in getting news updates. It investigated if Saudi Twitter users perceive Twitter as a credible source for news and rely on it to read the news more than legacy newspapers and their online counterparts. This research conducted an online survey and distributed it among Saudis who use Twitter to get news updates. The sample of this study had been drawn online by using the “SnowBall” sampling method through Survey Monkey and, the sample was collected during December 2015 and January 2016. A total of 3,003 Saudi Twitter users completed all questions in the survey. The results showed that Saudis consider Twitter as a newsgathering tool; therefore, they read news on Twitter more than reading legacy newspapers because it is easier and the fastest way of getting news, which indicated that the area of legacy newspapers in Saudi Arabia is at stake. Moreover, Saudis positively rated Twitter as a trustworthy and credible source for getting news updates. Thereby, they concurred that using Twitter has changed the path that people deal with legacy newspapers. Furthermore, non-legacy newspapers’ Twitter accounts received the lion's share of Saudis trust, especially Sabq newspaper, that was at the top as the newspaper account with the highest following. In regard to age groups, young Twitter users in Saudi Arabia trust non-legacy newspaper Twitter accounts more than older users, while old Twitter users were more likely to trust legacy newspaper Twitter accounts. The disbelief in the fairness of legacy newspapers could also be referred to the Saudis’ understanding that the government has a sweeping power to direct the media.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the University of Arizona College of Agriculture magazine, Arizona Land & People, by evaluating it for reader satisfaction and interest, usefulness of information and reader demographics. The study used a mailed questionnaire, sent to a random sample of Arizona residents on the subscriber list. Findings indicate that the majority of the recipients are satisfied with the magazine in its present form, although they prefer that it be published more often. The readers represent a wide range of occupations, many related to agriculture. The magazine is valued for the quality of its technical information, which a majority of the readers use for work-related purposes. Findings also suggest that Arizona Land & People is a valuable reference tool in schools and libraries.

The focus of the study is an analysis, to what extend nationalist positionings are used in the online mediation of sports. The empirical study focuses on how nationality is represented and constructed in textual output. In addition, the study compares the findings of a content analysis conducted in Germany and the UK. As critical case the coverage of the 2012 UEFA EURO Championship qualification in 2011 has been selected.Previous research shows that nationalism in mediated sports within the traditional media is represented through various approaches. The usage of national identities and the construction of difference have been observed by researchers, such as Dixon (2000), Bruce (2004), Malcom (2009), Stocker (2009), Chesterton (2011) and others as mechanisms of nationalism. Furthermore, the developments and trends in the genre of sports journalism have been studied by researchers, such as Schlegel (2007) and Schmalenbach (2009), in regards to the journalistic profession, economical interests and tendencies in writing. The most important theory for this research has been the construction of difference in media output as well as how national identities or nationalism is represented in textual output. Most influential for this study are the theories by Stuart Hall (1997) and Teun van Dijk (1991). A definition regarding nationality and nationalism is based on the Danish researcher Jorgensen as presented by Östman (2009).The empirical study collects articles published on the two most visited websites / portals from Germany and the UK. 81 articles have been studied through a quantitative content analysis. From the empirical study it has been concluded that in both countries nationalist positionings are represented through constructions of difference. However, it needs to be noted that journalists in Germany and the UK are using different approaches. In Germany, country names and variations are used to create distance between the home and the other teams. In the UK they are used to strengthen their own national identity. Sources and quotations of the home teams are overrepresented to underline the connection between them and the audience. Pronouns and comparatives / superlatives are used to construct an “us-versus-them” relationship. Pronouns are more important in the UK for this approach, while in Germany it is mostly comparatives / superlatives. The frequencies of the different constructions vary, but all of them are used regularly in online sports reporting and confirm that there are nationalist tendencies in sports journalism.

This study looks at the recent rise of the public relations profession and its influence on national news production in Britain. Simply put, has public relations undermined the notion of the fourth estate media in Britain and has it advantaged certain kinds of news source over others? The thesis breaks down into three parts. The first part documents the rise of public relations in Britain, its profile, and distribution amongst a range of institutions and organisations. The developing public relations and media industries are compared and the literature, on the relations between 'news sources', PR practitioners and journalists, is critically evaluated. The second part focuses on corporate public relations generally and, more specifically, on financial and City PR. Industry and fieldwork data are contrasted with radical and liberal accounts of media-corporate source relations. The findings suggest that corporate PR has had limited success in influencing mainstream news but been considerably more adept at managing specialist news sections. It is thus argued that PR has benefited the corporate sector, less by influencing journalists and the general public, and more by excluding them. This pattern is supported with a detailed case study involving Granada's take-over of Forte in 1995/96. The third part discusses 'resource-poor' and 'outsider' groups - more specifically, British trade unions. Fieldwork data is used to test radical and pluralist accounts of the coverage of such groups in the mass media. The findings argue that unions have found new ways to increase their media access using PR - and with rather more success than earlier studies suggested. The conclusion is borne out by a case study of the UCW's (Union of Communication Workers) successful PR campaign to halt Post Office privatisation in 1994. Finally, the separate findings of the thesis are used to develop a fuller description of how public relations affects media production and news source access.

The relationship between journalists and film makers have always been one of love and hate, and many journalists dislike how they are being portrayed in feature films. Journalists have always figured in the filmhistory, especially in Hollywood, there they hold up a cultural myth. The representation of journalist do not reflect the reality, it is rather the idea of journalism that film makers want us to believe in. The purpose of this study was to see how journalist are portrayed in their profession through a gender perspective and how the technology that they are using is being represented. The research includes two Hollywood feature films from different time periods and by different directors. The result of the analysis shows that women are represented as journalists to a greater extent in the later film and that these characters seems more careerdriven and complex. Still in both films the women are often set asside by a male counterpart that takes the important decisions. We can also see how they in the earlier film rely heavily on the representation of technology as the telephone, typewriter or notepad, whereas they mix the later and earlier technology in the later film. The use of internet and other late techology is still a little bit absent.

This study of radio news stations adds to the field of Twitter research into broadcasters' use of this social media microblogging platform; previous research has predominantly focused on television. This case study, based on a survey with numerous open-ended questions completed in face-to-face interviews, begins to fill in data on how Twitter is being used in major market radio station newsrooms. Limited in scope, this exploratory study used answers from seven members of two radio newsrooms in trying to find out if there were stated goals for tweets; if separate, unique content was being tweeted or was content tied to the stations' on-air product; how tweets seek to increase station listenership and/or increase station website traffic; what were the most frequently tweeted topics; what hyperlinks were included in tweets for internal or external web content; and were tweets personal and/or opinionated, or kept more professional with just factual material. From a strategic management theory standpoint, there is neither a stated plan nor goals sought with these newsrooms' use of Twitter. Unique tweet content includes sending out photos which add visuals to the pictureless world of radio news and live-tweeting of ongoing news events, while complementary content is promotional to push audience members to on-air or website products. There are no analytics in place to try to determine whether the stations' listenership or web traffic increases based on tweets. Promotional teases of upcoming on-air guest interviews or news content and/or web content are the most frequently tweeted topics. Hashtags rather than hyperlinks are more often included in the stations' tweets. News personnel stay away from expressing opinions, or being too personal in tweets, but remain more objective and professional by sticking to facts which is in step with the traditional role of journalists.

The low graduation rate of degree-seeking students at public community colleges is an important crisis facing communities across the United States. College satisfaction and withdrawal cognitions in students have been identified as key factors in college persistence by researchers. However, a review of the literature revealed no study in which a college-persistence intervention based on the personalization principle theory or using tailored messages has been conducted. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of a college-persistence intervention, based on the personalization principle theory and Mashburn's theory, for students at a community college. This study used between-groups experimental research design and employed a nonprobability convenience sample comprising 108 college students at a regionally accredited public community college in the United States. Random assignment to 1 of 3 groups, including 2 experimental groups and 1 no-message control group, was conducted. The 2 experimental groups were the personalization-based tailored instructional messages and generalized instructional messages groups. A one-way MANOVA indicated that there was no significant difference in the college satisfaction and withdrawal cognitions of students in the experimental and control groups. A chi-square test of independence also indicated that there was no significant association between intervention type (personalization-based tailored instructional message, generalized instructional message, and no-message control) and college persistence. This study provides educators with a basis for social change with the debut of a prototype intervention that may be replicated and extended in future research to help students earn a college degree.
