Introduction. The fast program algorithm of arithmetic coding proposed in the paper is for the compression of digital images. It is shown how the complexity of the arithmetic coder algorithm depends on the complexity measures (the input size is not considered). In the course of work, the most computationally complex parts of the arithmetic coder algorithm are determined. Performance optimization of their software implementation is carried out. Codecs with the new algorithm compress photo and video records obtained through the remote probing of water bodies without frame-to-frame difference.Materials and Methods. In the presented paper, a selection of satellite images of the Azov Sea area was used. At this, the software algorithm of the arithmetic coder was optimized; a theoretical study was conducted; and a computational experiment was performed.Research Results. The performance of the software implementation of the arithmetic coder is increased by the example of the VP9 video codec. Numerous launches of reference and modified codecs were made to measure the runtime. Comparison of the average time of their execution showed that the modified codec performance is 5.21% higher. The overall performance improvement for arithmetic decoding was 7.33%.Discussion and Conclusions.Increase in the speed of the latest digital photo and video image compression algorithms allows them to be used on mobile computing platforms, also as part of the onboard electronics of unmanned aerial vehicles. The theoretical results of this work extend tools of the average-case complexity analysis of the algorithm. They can be used in case where the number of algorithm steps depends not only on the input size, but also on non-measurable criteria (for example, on the common RAM access scheme from parallel processors).

Currently, various applications of ultra-wideband signal–code constructions are among the most vibrant technologies, being implemented in very different fields. The purpose of this research consists of analyzing Barker codes and searching for the optimal nested representations of them. We also aim to synthesize signal–code constructions based on the tenets of nesting of alternative modified Barker codes, which employ an asymmetric alphabet. The scientific merit of the paper is as follows: on the basis of new analytic expressions, modified nested codes and signal–code constructions were obtained, applicable for the establishment of the unambiguous association of the component values of the nested codes with any lobes of the normalized autocorrelation function. With these analytical expressions, we are, hence, able to determine the values of the binary asymmetrical components of the nested codes related to the side lobes of the normalized autocorrelation function. In this way, we clearly obtain better (low) levels for these lobes than by using the autocorrelation function, as established by the equivalent conventional Barker codes, including the nested constructions. Practical application of these modulated ultra-wideband signals ensures improved correlational features, high-fidelity probabilistic detection, and more precise positional detection of physical bodies depending on the range coordinate.

The construction of the so-called Bodmer Composite or Miscellaneous codex has been an ongoing problem since the publication of its constituent parts began in the 1950s. A recent inspection of high resolution digital images of P.Bodmer viii shows compellingly that this portion of the codex had more than one phase of use, was originally part of a separate codex, and was only later removed and joined to the other sections of the Bodmer “composite” codex. The New Testament manuscript known as P72 (P.Bodmer vii + P.Bodmer viii) is thus a codicological unity only in a secondary sense.

The purpose of this research was to analyze social processes as an integral part of gender relations. A theoretical framework was developed using a three-part conceptualization of social processes. Data were collected during semistructured interviews with 35 individuals in three National Governing Bodies of sport in the UK and during unstructured interviews and observation in meetings and sport events attended by the participants. The data were coded and analyzed, and three gendered social processes were examined: informal networking, dress codes, and the use of humor. In the conclusion section, future directions are offered addressing the implications of this research for sport management practitioners, educators, and researchers.

The study reviewed the course codes at undergraduate level in selected universities and Higher Education Commission (HEC). The objectives of the study were to investigate the coding system of courses and propose a system for coding the courses at tertiary level in Pakistan. The coding system of different universities, inside and outside Pakistan, was analyzed and a system of coding was proposed. The study found discrepancies in the coding of courses that cause difficulties for academic bodies and transfer of credits from one university to another. It is recommended that courses of a degree required may be divided in 1) General Education requirements, 2) Subject specific foundation courses, 3) subject specific major compulsory courses, and 4) subject specific major elective courses. For codes 2, 3 or 4 capital letters for a subject along with three numbers (xxx) may be used to specify each course of the university. The left digit of the three may be used for the hardship level. The courses 1xx, 2xx, 3xx and 4xx will be taught in the first, second, third and fourth year, respectively and research may be given 500 at undergraduate level, courses of 5 year may be placed in 5xx and research may be coded as 599. The graduate level courses for MPhil /MS /PhD may be coded as 6xx, 7xx and 8xx for MPhil and PhD all over the country.

The study of legal practice, legal theory, and the issuing of law in early medieval Europe has seen a fundamental paradigm shift over the past three decades as scholars have rejected an older model of the Germanic invasions and/or migrations toppling Roman civilization in the lands of the erstwhile western Empire. It is now well understood that the so-called “barbarian law codes” were, in fact, composite bodies of law drawn from a variety of Roman sources, including not only the compendia produced under the auspices of Emperors Theodosius II (402‐450) and Justinian (527‐565), but also Roman provincial law and Roman military law. This new understanding of the enormous influence of Roman law, in its many forms, on early medieval legal thinking and practice was driven by a detailed re-evaluation of legal texts, which continues unabated to the present day. The volume under consideration here, the revised doctoral dissertation of Dominik Trump completed at the University of Cologne, offers a close examination of an epitome of the Lex Romana Visigothorum, issued by King Alaric II between 505‐507. This epitome, called the Epitome Aegidii after its first editor Pieter Gillis (1486‐1533), played a significant role in both legal studies and practice in the Regnum Francorum because of its great utility. As Trump observes, despite its brevity the Epitome Aegidii has the same range of sources as the Lex Romana. These are the Codex Theodosianus, novellae from after the reign of Theodosius, Pseduo-Pauline sentences, the Codex Gregorianus, the Codex Hermogenionus, and a short responsum from Aemilius Papinianus. The Epitome, therefore, provides yet another index of the value with which legal thinkers and practitioners in early medieval Europe regarded the choices made by the advisors of King Alaric when designing and executing his legal compendium.

Abstract This paper analyzes the two distinct concepts of translation at work in the encounter between the Amazonian Wari' and the New Tribes Mission evangelical missionaries, and the equivocations stemming from this difference. While the missionaries conceive translation as a process of converting meanings between languages, conceived as linguistic codes that exist independently of culture, for the Wari', in consonance with their perspectivist ontology, it is not language that differentiates beings but their bodies, given that those with similar bodies can, as a matter of principle, communicate with each other verbally. Translation is realized through the bodily metamorphosis objectified by mimetism and making kin, shamans being the translators par excellence, capable of circulating between distinct universes and providing the Wari' with a dictionary-like lexicon that allows them to act in the context of dangerous encounters between humans and animals.

Historically, Black females have been dehumanized by the policing, hyper-sexualization, and fetishizing of their bodies. This dismissal of their humanness is rooted in enslavement and is perpetuated in society at large, the media, and in schools today. As a result, the bodies of Black girls are under constant gaze and scrutiny. This directly connects to the policing of what they wear and results in them being disproportionately dress coded in their learning spaces. This paper, written in dialogue, shares the insight of two Black, female students, and fifteen other Black female students whom they interviewed at Midwest High School as it relates to the disproportionate treatment of Black girls at their school.

Recent scholarship on the Bodmer Miscellaneous Codex (BMC) has analysed various features of the manuscript, mostly attempting to answer questions like “Why was this codex created?” and “What purpose did it serve?” Some have given more specific answers, while others believe the document to be largely enigmatic. To further the academy’s understanding of this ancient codex, this paper will examine the BMC, which comprises 11 different writings, for evidence of early Christian social identity formation. More specifically, it will heuristically apply Social Identity Theory (SIT) and Social Identity Complexity Theory (SICT) to reflect on identity and boundary construction in the BMC. It will be argued that various features of this ancient codex reveal a process of social identity formation, specifically an emerging orthodox Christian identity that is seeking positive distinctiveness and striving to reinforce the boundaries between an ingroup and various other outgroups. Furthermore, it is argued that the evidence of these features, in the context of persecution and competing Christianities, denotes a lower level of social identity complexity.

Teresa Margolles subverts the epistemic hierarchy of the archive. Her work privileges and affirms embodied memory and material meaning as essential modes for knowing, understanding, and documenting social violence. Margolles invests her concern for societal injustice through her use of bodily fluids derived from actual human corpses. Specifically, in the textile, Sutura—a work arising out of Margolles’s research at the Venezuelan-Colombian border during the migration crisis—the artist and her collaborators commemorate the life of a murdered migrant in material and method. Embroidery is utilized as a historically coded artistic form that resembles suturing and links the project with the reparative action of sewing. Using the stark and minimal representation of a straight line, embroidery is a metaphor for the narrative lines of millions of Venezuelans who have fled the country in the last decade. Similarly, the bodily material integrated into the bloodstained cloth functions to conflate textile, skin, and landscape to explore the confluence of substance, body, and place. I argue that Margolles configures a solution to the hegemony of the archive and the approach to bodily violence in Latin America more broadly. Her archival alternative and use of corpses and bodily fluids may be gruesome and ethically questionable, but the works are also reminders of the perpetual acts of violence inflicted on forgotten bodies.

AbstractIn recent years scholars have devoted a great deal of attention and theorisation to the body in history, looking both at bodies as metaphors and as sites of intervention. These studies have tended to focus on the analysis of bodies in a national context, acting for and acted upon by the state, and similarly the ever-expanding study of masculinity continues to try to define hegemonic masculinities. But what if we direct our gaze to marginal bodies, in this case Blackshirt bodies who act against the state, and a political movement that commits assault on the body politic? This article examines the centrality of the body and distinctive gender codes in the self-representation, the performance and practice, and the culture of Britain's failed fascist movement during the 1930s. The term ‘body fascism’ has taken on different and much diluted meaning in the present day, but in the British Union of Fascists’ construction of the Blackshirted body, in the movement's emphasis on the embodiment of their political religion through sport, physical fitness and public display of offensive and defensive violence, and in their distinctive and racialised bodily aesthetic illustrated in their visual and graphic art production we come to understand Britain's fascist movement as a product of modernity and as one potent expression of the convergence between populist politics and body fixation.

The body has come to play an increasingly crucial role in social context, where appearance represents the privileged sphere for self-expression and identity construction. Among the many ways of decorating, adorning and camouflaging the body, some traditional techniques (tattoing, piercing, scarification) are competing with newer and technological ones (aesthetic surgery, implants) to shape and portray individualities. On the one hand, those techniques are borrowing from the world of fashion purposes and codes of presentation, on the other hand, they challenge that fluidity and continuous change by materializing long term identity projects aimed at resisting transformation. In both cases individuals refer to the body as a privileged realm to narrate and reflect upon their own personal story, they also seem more capable to manage the different techniques, and to mix them for their expressive purposes. The result is a combination of visual codes that can reveal different bodily models as well as different ways of experiencing corporeality and embodiment. The article tries to account for this variety by referring to a research carried out on four techniques (tattoing, scarification, aesthetic surgery and piercing) among a group of users and professionals.

Voluntary codes of practice are currently favoured in New Zealand as a means of providing a framework for self regulation by industry groups. The insurance industry is no exception. A number of industry bodies have adopted codes of practice, which include general guidance and disciplinary codes. This article examines these voluntary codes of practice and questions whether consumers benefit from this form of insurance regulation. This is not a speculative enquiry. Because of the importance of insurance as a mechanism for risk transfer to our society, our economy, and in particular, to consumers, a clear understanding of these codes of practice, and in particular their legal effect and their benefits and limitations as a rule-making mechanism is essential.

Recent developments in textual criticism have encouraged NT scholars to regard the various NT manuscripts not merely as sources of variant readings to enable a reconstruction of the original text but as interpretative renderings with their own intrinsic interest and as important material evidence for early Christianity. Taking up this cue, this paper examines what the two (probably) earliest manuscripts of 1 Peter indicate about the status of this writing, and what early readers took to be its key themes, given the other texts with which it is bound. In both cases, and with some striking overlaps, 1 Peter is regarded as a text focused on the Easter themes of the suffering, martyrdom and vindication of Christ, and the related suffering and hope of his faithful people in a hostile world. These two manuscripts also call for some reconsideration of older scholarship, now widely rejected, which saw 1 Peter as a baptismal homily or paschal liturgy. While these remain unconvincing views of 1 Peter's origins, they do rightly identify themes and connections which the earliest editors and readers evidently also perceived.

This article begins the process of evaluating the adequacy of the procedural and substantive requirements that Australian communications regulators (and hence industry bodies) must satisfy before co-regulatory codes of practice can be registered. It considers if the procedural requirements relating to consumer and public consultation, included in the statutory frameworks that authorise and govern co-regulation in the media, online and telecommunications sectors, ensure co-regulatory rule-making is sufficiently responsive to the interests of consumers and citizens. Drawing on publicly available information about seven industry bodies that have drafted codes of practice and round table discussions with industry, consumers and regulators, the article highlights that the current engagement practices of industry bodies often fall short of the ‘democratic credentials’ of responsiveness. It suggests that the code registration criteria relating to consumer and public consultation must be overhauled if these weaknesses are to be rectified.

This article analyses the communicative function of the skin, taking a Christian hagiographic text written in the early seventh century in the Sassanid Empire as a case study. The aim is to illustrate the creation of speech codes in Christian communities in the Sassanid Empire and their expression in the hagiographic literature, focusing on the representation of one aspect: the presence or absence of marks on the skin. By analysing these references and comparing them with other hagiographic testimonies, I shall explore how Christian communities in late antiquity constructed systems of meaning around the skin and used them to articulate their religious identity in relation to other communities. The Speech Codes Theory developed by Greg Philipsen is of relevance here, helping to elucidate how Christian communities, embedded in an agonistic socio-cultural, political, legal, and religious context where Zoroastrianism occupied the hegemonic spheres, developed a constellation of very specific meanings around the skin that enabled a perpetual process of creating, negotiating and defining a message of religious affiliation.

From the outset, both regulators and industry realized that the best way to develop many of the needed rules for the design, construction, and operation of nuclear facilities was the national standards consensus process. This process, followed by the American National Standards Institute and other recognized standards-issuing bodies such as ASME, brings together the expertise of individuals from government, industry, academia, and other stakeholders. In the years following the first publication of Section III, the coverage of the Code expanded to incorporate piping requirements, pressure-retaining components for pumps and valves, equipment and piping supports, reactor vessel internal structures, and other features of nuclear power plants.

Abstract In all constitutional systems, there is a reticence in sanctioning criminally any injury caused by fault to a person, without taking into account certain aspects really justifying the penology’s intervention – a severe injury of the victim’s body, a case where there are broken prudence norms enacted precisely for avoiding the bodily injury by fault of a person.

One of the topical directions of modern linguistics refer to the studies related to the identification of anthropocentric nature of the language. In this context, language can be considered a system of signs reflecting the specifics of human perception and description of the world around. Being the most ancient genre of folklore, riddles serve as a valuable material for linguocultural research and contain unique culturally significant information about the mythological and worldview views of different peoples. The purpose of the study is to determine key cultural codes verbalized in the texts of the Yakut cosmogonic riddles. The objectives of the study were as follows: to consider texts of riddles in which the sky and celestial bodies serve as the denotation; to identify key cultural codes that metaphorically represent celestial space and space objects; as well as archaic images of space objects and the sky encrypted in the texts of riddles. To achieve the purpose, we used the methods of semantic, descriptive, semiotic and interpretive analysis. The combination of the methods mentioned above allowed identifying universal and culturally marked codes that describe space objects. In the course of the study the key codes of Yakut linguoculture were identified: anthropomorphic, object and zoomorphic. In paroemias the mythologeme of the universe is represented by a vessel, horse-cosmos; celestial bodies acquire anthropomorphic and zoomorphic features; object-related and zoomorphic codes actualize the archaic picture of the household structure of the Yakuts. The prospects of the study are the following: the results obtained can be used by specialists in linguistics, linguoculturology and folkloristics, interested in the problems of reflecting the specifics of national cultures in folklore texts.

Body category-selective regions of the primate temporal cortex respond to images of bodies, but it is unclear which fragments of such images drive single neurons’ responses in these regions. Here we applied the Bubbles technique to the responses of single macaque middle superior temporal sulcus (midSTS) body patch neurons to reveal the image fragments the neurons respond to. We found that local image fragments such as extremities (limbs), curved boundaries, and parts of the torso drove the large majority of neurons. Bubbles revealed the whole body in only a few neurons. Neurons coded the features in a manner that was tolerant to translation and scale changes. Most image fragments were excitatory but for a few neurons both inhibitory and excitatory fragments (opponent coding) were present in the same image. The fragments we reveal here in the body patch with Bubbles differ from those suggested in previous studies of face-selective neurons in face patches. Together, our data indicate that the majority of body patch neurons respond to local image fragments that occur frequently, but not exclusively, in bodies, with a coding that is tolerant to translation and scale. Overall, the data suggest that the body category selectivity of the midSTS body patch depends more on the feature statistics of bodies (e.g., extensions occur more frequently in bodies) than on semantics (bodies as an abstract category).

Corporatization of professional bodies may be seen as a new phenomenon, but it has been a call since the 1980s when many professional bodies started experiencing decline. Although corporatization, as practice, is a private sector concept, applying it in the management and administration of professional bodies is likely to provide a better turn-around in how professional bodies are managed. Part of corporatization is having corporate governance structures including ethics codes which are meant to professionalize professional bodies. This study therefore compared the Chartered Institute of Government Finance Audit and Risk Officers (CIGFARO) and Institute of Local Government Management (iLGM) with a view to establish if they apply corporatization.

Abstract Augmented Reality (AR) is increasingly changing our perception of the world. The spreading of Quick Response (QR), Radio Frequency (RFID) and AR tags has provided ways to enrich physical items with digital information. By a process of alignment the codes can be read by the cameras contained in handheld devices or special equipment and add computer-generated contents – including 3-D imagery – to real objects in real time. As a result, we feel we belong to a multi-layered dimension, to a mixed environment where the real and the virtual partly overlap. Fashion has been among the most responsive domains to this new technology. Applications of AR in the field have already been numerous and diverse: from Magic Mirrors in department stores to 3-D features in fashion magazines; from augmented fashion shows, where models are covered with tags or transformed into walking holograms, to advertisements consisting exclusively of more or less magnified QR codes. Bodies are thus at the same time augmented and encrypted, offered to the eye of the digital camera to be transfigured and turned into a secret language which, among other functions, can also have that of becoming a powerful tool to bypass censorship.

The protests that erupted across Iran in 2022 after the death of a woman arrested for noncompliance with a headscarf requirement were not only about religious dress codes. They were a culmination of years of growing discontent over broader questions involving the place of women in the Islamic Republic and other grievances about the reach of an overbearing state and perceived social and political injustices. The erosion of civil society has made it difficult to sustain the protests’ momentum, as the state moves to co-opt businesses and the public into enforcing its decrees, but the uprising is part of a longer-term, nonlinear process of dissent-driven change in Iran.

The criminal process is a progressive and coordinated activity, in which the main participants exercise their rights and fulfill their obligations by performing appropriate acts regulated by the rules of criminal procedural law. The procedural act is the legal instrument consisting in the manifestation of will through which the rights and prerogatives of judicial bodies and procedural subjects participating in criminal proceedings are exercised. Manifestations of will of judicial bodies could be: ordering the initiation of criminal investigation, closing the initiation of criminal proceedings, sending to trial, taking preventive measures and precautionary measures, order to summon certain persons. The procedural act is the legal means by means of which the task arising from the procedural acts performed and the procedural measures taken during the criminal proceedings is carried out. Procedural acts have their basis for the prior existence of procedural acts, thus becoming acts derived from them. Starting from these definitions, I will present in turn more information about the summons, a topic that I will analyze both theoretically and practically because it requires a thorough knowledge of the details related to the procedure of summoning a person when he is called to appear before the court or before another judicial body.

ABSTRACT The paper presents a numerical implementation of the gravitational N-body problem with contact interactions between non-spherically shaped bodies. The work builds up on a previous implementation of the code and extends its capabilities. The number of bodies handled is significantly increased through the use of a CUDA/GPU-parallel octree structure. The implementation of the code is discussed and its performance is compared against direct N2 integration. The code features both smooth (force-based) and non-smooth (impulse-based) methods, as well as a visco-elastic non-smooth method, to handle contact interaction between bodies. The numerical problem of simulating ‘rubble-pile’ asteroid gravitational aggregation processes is addressed. We discuss the features of the problem and derive criteria to set up the numerical simulation from the dynamical constraints of the combined gravitational–collisional problem. Examples of asteroid aggregation scenarios that could benefit from such implementation are finally presented.

Studies of human–human interactions indicate that relational dimensions, which are largely nonverbal, include intimacy/involvement, status/control, and emotional valence. This paper devises codes from a study of couples and strangers which may be behavior-mapped on to next generation android bodies. The codes provide act specifications for a possible benchmark of nonverbal intimacy in human–robot interaction. The appropriateness of emotionally intimate behaviors for androids is considered. The design and utility of the android counselor/psychotherapist is explored, whose body is equipped with semi-autonomous visceral and behavioral capacities for ‘doing intimacy.’

Critics often dismiss cross-dressing in Beaumont and Fletcher's Philaster as a meretricious dramatic trick. In reality, cross-dressing becomes a nexus for the play's pervasive anxieties concerning bodily and vestimentary codes, with major characters staking their conflicting claims to political power on their ability to manipulate these codes and the various inner truths which they inscribe. The divestment of the cross-dressed page, Bellario, dramatizes precisely the inability of signifiers to offer certainty concerning the truth within the casing of clothing or the casing of the body.

Abstract The problem of simulation models capable of predicting the aerodynamic instability of helicopter slung-load cargo containers and bluff bodies is addressed. Instability for these loads is known to depend on unsteady frequency-dependent aerodynamics, but simulation models that include the unsteady aerodynamics do not currently exist. This paper presents a method for generating such models using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to generate forced-oscillation aerodynamic data and frequency domain system identification techniques to generate a frequency response from the CFD data and to identify a transfer function fit to the frequency response. The method is independent of the responsible flow phenomenon and is expected to apply to bluff-bodies generally. Preliminary results are presented for the case of the 6- by 6- by 8-ft CONEX (container express) cargo container. The present work is based on two-dimensional (2D) aerodynamic data for the CONEX side force and yaw moment generated by a forced oscillation in which frequency is varied smoothly over the range of interest. A first-order rational polynomial transfer function is found adequate to fit the aerodynamics, and this is shown to provide a good match with flight test data for the yawing motion of the CONEX.

Thermal-hydraulic system computer codes are extensively used worldwide for analysis of nuclear facilities by utilities, regulatory bodies, nuclear power plant designers, vendors, and research organizations. The computer code user represents a source of uncertainty that can influence the results of system code calculations. This influence is commonly known as the “user effect” and stems from the limitations embedded in the codes as well as from the limited capability of the analysts to use the codes. Code user training and qualification represent an effective means for reducing the variation of results caused by the application of the codes by different users. This paper describes a systematic approach to training code users who, upon completion of the training, should be able to perform calculations making the best possible use of the capabilities of best estimate codes. In other words, the program aims at contributing towards solving the problem of user effect. In addition, this paper presents the organization and the main features of the 3D S.UN.COP (scaling, uncertainty, and 3D coupled code calculations) seminars during which particular emphasis is given to the areas of the scaling, uncertainty, and 3D coupled code analysis.

The Correct Body for Integration and Work An ethnological study of courses for newly arrived and jobseekers Karin Högström Using ethnographic examples from Sweden this article focuses on a form of training through which people are taught new movements and postures to use during different processes; it also includes transmission of certain attitudes and ideals. These examples demonstrate how certain bodies, bodily attitudes and behaviors are perceived as problematic and are therefore considered in need of change. In the integration-project Right step (Rätt steg) in Stockholm, great emphasis is placed on bodily aspects. Newly arrived Somali refugees without previous education are assisted to practice “correct” behavior and posture during job interviews: stand and walk upright, make eye-contact and give a firm handshake. Participants are also encouraged to eat healthier and exercise more. Courses at the Swedish Public Employment Agency instruct jobseekers how to make a good impression on potential employers. Here, too, appropriate behavior and posture are addressed, and the correct way to shake hands and establish eye contact is taught. The teachers aim at changing not only the participants’ behavior, but also their manners and, to a certain extent, their attitudes. The goal is to purposefully adapt bodies and minds to the expectations and ideals of potential employers and Swedish society. Conforming to the behavior and norms provided by the teachers can seem to be the only viable option for the participants, given their subordinate position as immigrants or jobseekers. The course participants’ own ideals and physical attitudes are assigned low or almost no value. The asymmetry of power is also evident to those responsible and sometimes the participants protest against the teachers’ attempts to change them. However, learning the new norms and behaviors can provide benefits for the course participants. Mastering the codes can, to a certain extent, make it possible to choose how to use the new skills. Learning the correct behaviors can thus lead to a greater freedom of action, within very limited conditions.
