With survey data from the National Study of Youth and Religion (NSYR), this study investigates the association between across-time consistency in closeness to God and well-being. I focus on God-believing individuals who are Protestant, Catholic, or Latter-day Saint, and present across Waves 1–3 (n = 1,333). Outcomes include Wave 3 psychological resources (i.e., life purpose and personal mastery) and life satisfaction. Key predictors include two novel indicators of across-time consistency in closeness to God: (1) a four-category pattern variable and (2) a discrete numeric summary score. The pattern variable indicates respondents who become less close to God across time fare worse than those who remain consistently close to God. In addition, respondents consistently distant from God did not differ from their consistently close counterparts in terms of life purpose and personal mastery. The summary score indicates high levels of consistency in closeness to God predict high levels of life purpose and satisfaction.

This paper examines the continuity of Korean energy policy for the last 30 years and consistency of energy policy with other energy-related policies. Because energy policy environment is characterized by high level of uncertainty, long-range planning as well as skillful adaptation to changing environments are both needed. But there are costs the two different approaches must pay. Energy sector has its close connections with economic and environmental sectors. Energy policy-maker should find ways to minimize any conflict between related policies. Economic planning must be designed awaring of the constraints energy sector faces, and energy sector planning inevitably affects environmental quality. And priority among related policy areas must be adjusted according to changing situations. This paper calls policy-makers' attention to consistent policy process in the midst of favorable international energy market and emergence of green movement.

The main aim of this research is to identify the relation between the level of consistency of public sector accounting information and the fiscal management performance of Rondônia’s municipalities in the period between 2011 and 2015. Referring to the methodology, it was a quanƟtaƟve research, considering that the object of analysis involves numeric calculations, related to consistency tests of accounting information and the performance of fiscal management, using statistics and having as instrument of data collection the application of ten accounting consistence rules with data extracted directly from the TCE‐RO SIGAP system. The results showed that the level of consistency of accounting information was not statistically significant to explain the performance of fiscal management. However, by adopting a subset of more homogeneous consistency rules, it was very close to a reasonable degree of significance for the alternative hypothesisto be safely confirmed.

Safety management system assessment (SMSA) was a hot point in the field of safety management practice and research. But, the weights of safety management system assessment indicators are different in former achievements. In this study, the scores of indicators in ISRS, NOSA, API and Basic Norms for Work Safety Standardization (BNWSS) were referenced to obtain the initial weights of the primary indicators for SMSA. The decision-makers preference for the four methods was settled by means of analytic hierarchy process (AHP). After Kendalls test for consistency of the four methods, the combination weighting was made considering the preference and consistence on the basis of AHP. The rationality of weighting result was evaluated with close degree. The close degree reached 91.0% which was satisfactory.

Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) is one of the most popular data clustering methods which can be viewed as a linear combination of different Gaussian components. In GMM, each cluster obeys Gaussian distribution and the task of clustering is to group observations into different components through estimating each cluster's own parameters. The Expectation-Maximization algorithm is always involved in such estimation problem. However, many previous studies have shown naturally occurring data may reside on or close to an underlying submanifold. In this paper, we consider the case where the probability distribution is supported on a submanifold of the ambient space. We take into account the smoothness of the conditional probability distribution along the geodesics of data manifold. That is, if two observations are close in intrinsic geometry, their distributions over different Gaussian components are similar. Simply speaking, we introduce a novel method based on manifold structure for data clustering, called Locally Consistent Gaussian Mixture Model (LCGMM). Specifically, we construct a nearest neighbor graph and adopt Kullback-Leibler Divergence as the distance measurement to regularize the objective function of GMM. Experiments on several data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of such regularization.

Seasonal succession in bacterioplankton is a common process in marine waters. However, seasonality in their spatial turnover is largely unknown. Here, we investigated spatial turnover of surface bacterioplankton along a nearshore-to-offshore gradient in the East China Sea across four seasons. Although seasonality overwhelmed spatial variability of bacterioplankton composition, we found significant spatial turnover of bacterioplankton along the gradient as well as overall seasonal consistency in biogeographic patterns (including distance–decay relationship and covariation of community composition with distance to shore) with subtle changes. Bacterioplankton assembly was consistently dominated by deterministic mechanisms across seasons, with changes in specific processes. We found overall seasonal consistency in abiotic factors (mainly salinity and nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients) shaping bacterioplankton composition, while phytoplankton showed a similar influence as abiotic factors only in spring. Although key taxa responsible for bacterioplankton spatial turnover showed certain season-specificity, seasonal switching between closely related taxa occurred within most dominant families. Moreover, many close relatives showed different responding patterns to the environmental gradients in different seasons, suggesting their differences in both seasonally climatic and spatially environmental preferences. Our results provide insights into seasonal consistency and variability in spatial turnover of bacterioplankton in terms of biogeographic patterns, ecological processes, and external and internal drivers.

Controlled low-strength material (CLSM) is a mixture of portland cement, fly ash, sand, and water. A provisional standard for evaluating the flow consistency of this material has been recently developed by ASTM (PS 28-95). The procedure consists of filling a standardized cylinder with CLSM and lifting the cylinder by a steady upward motion, thereby allowing the CLSM to flow out and form a conical pile. The spread diameter is the average of two manually taken measurements of the base of the pile in orthogonal directions. The authors are developing a flow index test (FIT) for granular materials based on the CLSM flow test. During development of this index test, a number of parametric studies have been done to investigate the influence of material- and procedure-related factors on the test results. These studies indicate that the results obtained with the FIT procedure depend on a number of factors. Because inertia forces and surface friction coefficients are important factors for both wet and dry granular flow, the same factors are expected to affect the results of the CLSM flow consistency test.

In this paper, we show that there is a close relation between consistency in a constraint network and set intersection. A proof schema is provided as a generic way to obtain consistency properties from properties on set intersection. This approach not only simplifies the understanding of and unifies many existing consistency results, but also directs the study of consistency to that of set intersection properties in many situations, as demonstrated by the results on the convexity and tightness of constraints in this paper. Specifically, we identify a new class of tree convex constraints where local consistency ensures global consistency. This generalizes row convex constraints. Various consistency results are also obtained on constraint networks where only some, in contrast to all in the existing work,constraints are tight.

Interpretability in reflexive theories, especially in PA, has been studied in many papers; see e.g. [3], [6], [7], [10], [11], [15], [26]. It has been shown that reflexive theories exhibit many nice properties, e.g. (1) if T, S are recursively enumerable reflexive, then T is interpretable in S iff every Π1 sentence provable in T is provable in S; and (2) if S is reflexive, T is recursively enumerable and locally interpretable in S (i.e. every finite part of T is interpretable in S), then T is globally interpretable in S (Orey's theorem, cf. [3]).In this paper we want to study such statements for nonreflexive theories, especially for finitely axiomatizable theories (which are never reflexive). These theories behave differently, although they may be quite close to reflexive theories, as e.g. GB to ZF. An important fact is that in such theories one can define proper cuts. By a cut we mean a formula with one free variable which defines a nonempty initial segment of natural numbers closed under the successor function. The importance of cuts for interpretations in GB was realized already by Vopěnka and Hájek in [30]. Pioneering work was done by Solovay in [24]. There he developed the method of “shortening of cuts”. Using this method it is possible to replace any cut by a cut which is contained in it and has some desirable additional properties; in particular it can be closed under + and ·. This introduces ambiguity in the concept of arithmetic in theories which admit proper cuts, namely, which cut (closed under + and ·) should be called the arithmetic of the theory? Cuts played the crucial role also in [20].

Cette thèse traite l'inférence statistique de quelques processus de diffusion affine dans \( \R^m_+ \times \R^n \), avec m,n\in\N. Cette sous-classe de diffusions, notée par \textit{AD}(m,n), est appliquée à la tarification des options sur obligations et des actions, ce qui est illustré pour les modèles de Vasicek, Cox-Ingersoll-Ross (CIR) et Heston. Dans cette thèse, nous considérons deux différents modèles: le premier lorsque \( m = 1 \) et \( n \in \mathbb{N} \) et le deuxième lorsque \( m = 2 \) et \( n = 1 \). Pour le modèle \mathit{AD}(1, n), nous introduisons, au Chapitre 2, un résultat de classification où nous distinguons trois cas différents : sous-critique, critique et surcritique. Ensuite, nous étudions la stationnarité et l'ergodicité de sa solution sous certaines hypothèses sur les paramètres du drift. Pour le problème d'estimation paramétrique, nous utilisons deux méthodes différentes : l'estimation par maximum de vraisemblance (MLE) et l'estimation des moindres carrés conditionnels (CLSE). Au Chapitre 2, nous présentons l'estimateur obtenu par la méthode MLE basée sur des observations en temps continu et nous étudions sa consistance et son comportement asymptotique dans des cas ergodiques et non-ergodiques particuliers. Dans un premier temps, nous introduisons sa classification suivant les cas sous-critique, critique et surcritique. In this thesis, we consider two different cases : the first one is when m=1 and n\in\N and the second one is when m=2 and n=1. For the \mathit{AD}(1,n) model, we introduce, in Chapter 2, a classification result where we distinguish three different cases : subcritical, critical and supercritical. Then, we study the stationarity and the ergodicity of its solution under some assumptions on the drift parameters. For the parameter estimation problem, we use two different methods: the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) and the conditional least squares estimation (CLSE). In Chapter 2, we present the estimator obtained by the MLE method based on continuous time observations and we study its consistency and its asymptotic behavior in ergodic and particular non-ergodic cases. In Chapter 3, we present the estimator obtained by the CLSE method based on continuous then discrete time observations with high frequency and infinite horizon and we study its consistency and its asymptotic behavior in ergodic and particular non-ergodic cases. It is worth to note here that we obtain the same asymptotic results in both discrete and continuous sets under additional assumptions on the discretization step \Delta_N. In Chapter 4, we study the \mathit{AD}(2,1) model, called also double Heston model, we introduce first its classification with respect to subcritical, critical and supercritical case and we establish the relative stationarity and ergodicity theorems. In the statistical part of this chapter, we study the MLE and the CLSE of the ergodic double Heston model based on continuous time observations and we introduce its consistency and asymtotic normality theorems for each estimation method

The deformation behaviour and twinning mechanisms of commercially pure titanium alloys were investigated using complementary diffraction techniques and crystal plasticity modelling. The main motivation for conducting this investigation was to improve understanding of the deformation of titanium to help achieve the long term aim of reducing manufacturing and design costs. The deformation behaviour was characterised with tension, compression and channel die compression tests for three important variables: orientation; temperature from 25 C to 600 C; and composition for two contrasting alloys, CP-G1 and CP-G4. The experimental data used to characterise the behaviour and determine the mechanisms causing it were: textures determined by X-ray diffraction; twin area fractions for individual modes determined using electron back-scatter diffraction; and lattice strains measured by neutron diffraction. A strong effect of the orientation–stress state conditions on the flow curves (flow stress anisotropy) was found. The propensity for prism hai slip was the dominant cause of the behaviour – samples that were more favourably oriented for prism hai slip had lower flow stresses. Twinning was the most significant secondary deformation mode in the CP-G1 alloy but only had a minor effect on flow stress anisotropy in most cases. In the CP-G4 alloy twinning generally did not play a significant role indicating that hc + ai slip modes were significant in this alloy. Differences in the flow stress anisotropy between the two alloys were found to occur largely in the elasto-plastic transition and initial period of hardening. Modelling results indicated that larger relative resolved shear stress values for secondary deformation modes in the higher purity alloy increased the initial anisotropy. Decreasing flow stresses with increasing temperature were largely caused by a decrease in the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) values for slip, but also by a decrease in the Hall-Petch parameter for slip. The propagation of twinning was found to be orientation dependent through a Schmid law in a similar way to slip – it was activated at a CRSS and hardened so that an increasing resolved shear stress was required for it to continue operating. The CRSS values determined for the individual twin modes were – 65MPa, 180MPa, 83MPa for {1012}, {1122} and {1011} twinning, respectively. Further, twinning was found to be temperature insensitive except when the ability to nucleate twins posed a significant barrier (for {1011} twinning). Also, the CRSS for {1012} twinning was clearly shown to increase with decreasing alloy purity. A thorough method for determining crystal plasticity modelling parameters based on experimental data was formulated. Additionally, twinning was modelled in a physically realistic manner influenced by the present findings using the visco-plastic self-consistent (VPSC) model. In particular: the activity of twinning decreased in a natural way due to greater difficulty in its operation rather than through an enforced saturation; and hardening or softening due to changes in orientation and dynamic Hall-Petch hardening were important. The rigorous modelling procedure gave great confidence in the key experimental findings.

This article focuses on the strange story that functions as narrative origin in the Book of Chronicles: the murder of Saul and his sons (1 Chron. 10). In Chronicles, the logic of the production of meaning depends on the logic of patrilineal succession for its consistency. Upon close analysis of 1 Chronicles 10, it emerges that this narrative logic depends on the silencing of the maternal body. The murder of Saul and his sons is read symptomatically as a narrative of the originary repression of the maternal body, a repression necessary to sustain the phantasy of monosexual production that underwrites this masculinist history.

This chapter discusses the sentencing principles and procedures for multiple current offenses. It examines a seeming paradox: when multiple crimes are sentenced at one time or close together in time (simultaneous offenses), they are often sentenced much less harshly than when the same crimes are sentenced over a longer period of time (sequential offenses). Sequential offenses almost always receive penalties that are, in effect, fully cumulative (because all earlier sentences have already been entirely served), whereas simultaneous offenses typically receive less than fully cumulative penalties. The chapter first considers the diverse forms that multiple offending and the resulting criminal charges can take before highlighting several consistent differences between simultaneous and sequential offenses that justify presumptions in favor of more lenient treatment of simultaneous offenses cases. It also presents five proposals to make multiple-offense sentencing more principled and consistent.

Concussion in sports can result in somatic, cognitive, sleep-related, and emotional symptoms. Although the majority of athletes recover within days to weeks, some concussed patients develop longer lasting symptoms, consistent with a postconcussive syndrome (PCS), that can be disabling and limit sport participation. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, individualized treatment plans should include patient education, physical and cognitive rest, appropriate therapies, close monitoring, and medical management of symptoms. This chapter provides recommendations for the medical management of sport-related concussion.

Multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN) may be mistaken for common entrapment neuropathies, although absence of significant sensory findings is a helpful clue to the diagnosis. Multifocal motor neuropathy may also mimic motor neuron disease. Electrophysiological evidence of conduction block at a nerve site not typically prone to compression is consistent with MMN. A positive anti-GM1 antibody also supports the diagnosis. First-line treatment of MMN is intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), and the majority of patients have rapid improvement of their weakness. The clinical features, differential diagnosis, investigations, and treatment options are described in this chapter.

This chapter offers a close reading of Taixu’s anarchist essays. Published in the journals of the Chinese Socialist Party and the Socialist Party, these pieces were not included in the posthumously edited Complete Works and thus have been largely lost to scholars. The chapter argues that we find in these essays a series of shifting articulations of the moral frameworks that would animate Taixu’s Maitreyan theology: revolutionary utopia and Buddhahood. These articulations shift among three different approaches: economic-materialist, sociocultural, and existential-metaphysical. Yet they display a consistent concern with Datong, or utopia; the means by which it can be brought about; and the knowledge that makes this transformation possible.

Samuel Clarke is best known for the ‘Newtonian’ views on space and time he espouses in the Leibniz-Clarke correspondence. However, his writings on this topic extend far beyond that, and can help us to understand the particulars of Clarke’s metaphysics—including whether he is actually of a mind with Newton. The major part of this chapter considers Clarke’s metaphysical and epistemological views on time and space, arguing that the views Clarke puts forward in various texts can be rendered consistent. It reads Clarke as holding a position close to that of Henry More, and not the same as that of Newton. The minor part of this chapter considers Clarke’s account of divine presence in time and space, and argues that Clarke is a holenmerist.

The left atrium (LA) in a close interdependence with the left ventricle plays an essential role in the overall cardiovascular performance. The impact of LA remodelling on prognosis and risk stratification has gathered increasing evidence. With advances in imaging technology, the assessment of LA size and function become more accessible and precise. LA volume provides the most accurate estimate of LA size and superior prognostic information. Accounting for complex geometry and motion, three-dimensional echocardiography emerges as the preferred technique for the assessment of dynamic changes in LA volume. The assessment of LA function, providing important pathophysiological information, can add consistency in establishing the clinical role of LA remodelling. It is essential to fully understand the strengths and weaknesses of conventional and new echocardiographic techniques used to evaluate LA function. Atrial strain and strain rate parameters are less load dependent and have higher sensitivity in assessing LA function than conventional parameters. However, the lack of standardization and incomplete data regarding their prognostic value limits their routine use in current clinical practice.

AbstractA major feature of our study is that we use new methods for measuring residential segregation that make it possible for us to assess levels and trends in segregation with consistent accuracy and across a wider range of measurement circumstances. This includes combinations of group comparisons and community settings where trustworthy measurements of segregation previously have not been possible. More specifically, we measure the dimension of segregation known as evenness using refined versions of two familiar and widely used measures, the dissimilarity index (D) and the separation index (S). The versions of the measures we use are free of index bias, a problem that poses major challenges for measuring segregation in many situations, and thus yield index scores that are accurate and trustworthy in situations where scores obtained using conventional approaches to measuring segregation used in previous studies would be distorted by index bias. In the past, the problem of index bias forced researchers to choose between two undesirable options. One option is to measure segregation across a more comprehensive and representative range of circumstances but with an understanding that the index scores obtained are in many cases untrustworthy and potentially misleading because they are distorted by bias. The other option is to restrict the scope of the analysis to a much smaller and less representative set of combinations of group comparisons and community settings where index bias is likely to be negligible and scores for standard versions of segregation indices are trustworthy and can sustain close analysis of cases. The measurement methods we use make it possible for us to sidestep these difficult choices and avoid the undesirable consequences that accompany them. The benefit of using these new measurement methods is that we are able to obtain segregation index scores that are consistently accurate across a much broader range of measurement circumstances (e.g., combinations on group comparisons and community settings) than has been possible in previous research. The consistent accuracy of the unbiased measures enables us to draw conclusions about the levels and patterns of variation in segregation across group comparisons, across communities, and over time with greater confidence. Additionally, it allows us to selectively conduct close analysis of index scores for individual cases including, for example, tracking changes in segregation over time for a small subpopulation (e.g., Latino immigrants) in a small nonmetropolitan community, an analysis that cannot be sustained with conventional measurement practices used in past research. The task we seek to accomplish in this chapter is to first provide an overview of the conceptualization of residential segregation and the motivations for studying it and to then highlight the features of our study design that enable us to make new and important contributions to research on this topic.

We analyse the social embedding of stylistic change in the frequencies of nouns, lexical verbs and personal pronouns in the Corpora of Early English Correspondence from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. Our visualization methods show that the frequency of nouns exhibits a consistent decrease, while that of verbs and pronouns tends to increase over time. This suggests a colloquialization of the letter genre, which is particularly prominent in letters by women and the upper ranks as well as those written to socially close recipients. In the later eighteenth century, however, there is a convergence across genders and social ranks indicating the development of a shared, polite style among the increasingly highly educated middle and upper classes in the corpus.

Abstract This chapter provides a brief history of US CVE and identifies the persistence of ideas about informal political community in these policies, despite the absence of conclusive evidence as to their efficacy. The chapter shows that ideas about a strong informal political community as a valid response to the problem of homegrown extremism appear in much of the thinking behind counterradicalization measures in the United States. These measures consistently frame tightening the borders of informal political community as a response to the problem of radicalization, via an emphasis on community engagement with the agencies of government and on community cohesion against agents of radicalization.

McCauley has been teaching the novels in an interdisciplinary undergraduate seminar for years and contemplating how they move students beyond the standard questions of literary criticism. Standing on a hermeneutical foundation and responding to the interests of his students, McCauley urges more consistent engagement with the novels’ meaning. He asks how such attention could shift the direction of literary studies, focused as the field has been on critique.

The objective of this study is to examine the depreciation methods adopted by different companies listed in Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). Besides, the study also attempted to check the consistency in depreciation policy application and harmonization with authoritative accounting practices in the context of Bangladesh. A random sample of 120 companies across different sectors was examined to determine the depreciation method currently practiced in the country. This study revealed that declining balance of depreciation is the most commonly practiced method in most of the sample companies. Nonetheless, straight line depreciation method follows close behind. Moreover, it has been observed that only a few companies adopt both methods in the calculation of depreciation. Additionally the results also indicated a certain level of disharmony among companies within the same industry. Furthermore, it has also been observed from the research that the companies are very consistent regarding their practice of depreciation method.

This paper intends to evaluate the pilot workload of helicopter optimal autorotation landing procedure in the event of one engine failure to provide a reference for the pilot conducting the actual autorotation landing maneuver. The UH-60A helicopter is taken as the sample for demonstration. The autorotation landing procedure is formulated into a nonlinear optimal control problem (NOCP) based on an augmented six-degree-of-freedom rigid-body flight dynamics model, solved by collocation and numerical optimization method. The optimal landing trajectory and controls are compared with those from the flight test data. Metrics called aggressiveness and pilot cutoff frequency are applied to quantify and evaluate the pilot workloads respectively in time domain and frequency domain, based on the pilot control inputs of the optimal solution and the flight test data. The results show that optimal landing procedure is close to the flight test data, and the analysis of the metrics indicates that the pilot workload evaluated can be considered consistent with that from the flight test.

A skeletal model consists of a collection of geometric primitives, such as points, lines, and triangles, that specifies the topology of an object. The skeleton is can be used to define surfaces, resulting in a solid model of the object. Of the various surface models that have been used for skeletal models, the convolution surface has some attractive properties. The convolution surface is an implicit surface that has been formulated for various geometric primitives such as lines, triangles, etc. Modeling with convolution surfaces guarantees a continuous and smoothly blended surface that is relatively easy to deform and intuitive to specify. However, when two skeleton elements are placed close to each other, unwanted blending can occur and the topology of the final shape becomes difficult to control. To be useful in conceptual engineering design, a skeletal modeler must ensure that the topology of surfaces generated agrees with that of the skeleton. Ensuring a match between the topology of the convolution surface and its skeleton is a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a method based on Morse theory for ensuring topological consistency. By adjusting the parameters of the convolution surfaces, the topology of the final composite surface can be forced to match its root skeleton.

Dynamic networks are ubiquitous. Link prediction in dynamic networks has attracted tremendous research interests. Many models have been developed to predict links that may emerge in the immediate future from the past evolution of the networks. There are two key factors: 1) a node is more likely to form a link in the near future with another node within its close proximity, rather than with a random node; 2) a dynamic network usually evolves smoothly. Existing approaches seldom unify these two factors to strive for the spatial and temporal consistency in a dynamic network. To address this limitation, in this paper, we propose a link prediction model with spatial and temporal consistency (LIST), to predict links in a sequence of networks over time. LIST characterizes the network dynamics as a function of time, which integrates the spatial topology of network at each timestamp and the temporal network evolution. Comparing to existing approaches, LIST has two advantages: 1) LIST uses a generic model to express the network structure as a function of time, which makes it also suitable for a wide variety of temporal network analysis problems beyond the focus of this paper; 2) by retaining the spatial and temporal consistency, LIST yields better prediction performance. Extensive experiments on four real datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the LIST model.

Abstract Oil and gas operators use data collected from well operations for real-time monitoring, performance analysis and remote operations. Service providers typically operate real-time data systems from local data centers. They manually provision capex-heavy IT infrastructure and applications for each operator and rig. This may lead to overcapacity and inconsistent performance operating at scale. We commissioned a public-cloud, real-time-as-a-service solution which increased performance and consistency of real-time data access for a Norwegian operator. It also improved the service provider's operating efficiency and ability to accelerate the pace of innovation. A distributed architecture reduces failure points and enables horizontal scaling. Cloud provides elastic scaling to provision the right amount of compute resources to meet demand. Open-source technologies lower maintenance cost and reduce the technical debt accumulated maintaining the proprietary incumbent system. Close collaboration between the operator and service company enabled successful commissioning on six rigs. Real-time data feeds were previously collected by six independent IT systems hosted in a regional data center. The live data streams were successfully transitioned during active drilling activities, without interruption to remote operations. Real-time performance increased by more than 83%. The operator also observed a significant improvement in service and data quality. During the transition period, minor updates were deployed with zero downtime and no impact to the operator. Shortly after rollout, the support team remediated a performance bottleneck in just minutes. Prior solutions would typically require procurement and configuration of network hardware, taking months. In contrast to proprietary software solutions, an open architecture facilitates easy integration of existing software investments. Application programming interfaces simplify the development and connectivity of new real-time applications. Finally, cloud-native solutions accelerate the pace of innovation. Access to cloud services like analytics platforms enable continual integration of digital capabilities with real-time data.

Abstract Geoscientists are bound to have a degree of bias based on their own knowledge, experience, perception, adversity to risk, education, or pre-conceived beliefs. Such subjectivity may lead to a prejudice in making a decision unless this is properly recognized and corrected. As such, this may result in a distorted view of the likelihood on a decision to ‘drill-or-drop,’ if these pre-drill probability predictions are not rationalized. It is therefore extremely important to improve probability assessments by undertaking different approaches, such as setting up detailed and consistent protocols, company-wide standardization or by applying specific elicitation methods. A statistical analysis was undertaken using pre- and post-drill Geological Chance of Success (gCOS) and P-mean volume of the prospects that were drilled vis-a-vis prospects yet to be drilled. The reason for this is to identify the range of the pessimistic and/or optimistic evaluations by the risk reviewers. The purpose then becomes to derive a more stringent and authentic method by which such high deviations in risk estimations, and consistency with the methodology for prospective resource estimations, could be minimized with any potential biases removed. A historical database from the company's assets, spanning over a decade (2010-2020), was used for the statistical analysis. The results suggest that the risk reviewer's bias, lack of close analogues and paucity of direct evidence of perspectivity, resulted in non-realistic and over/under estimation of gCOS and prospective resources. Being able to understand and quantify the risks and uncertainties, and knowing how to manage them effectively, contributes to well-founded business decisions, protects the value of projects and assets, and maximizes the value of company project portfolios. A systematic risk and peer review processes was then evolved by KUFPEC to constrain these biased subjective deviations from real objective estimations and to minimize the risk of the overestimation / underestimation of risking and hydrocarbon volume for a given prospect.

I noticed that most trap shooters practice dry firing towards a wall, pretending that there is a target on the wall, going right or left [1]. However, they are not aware if they have come close to or “hit” the target by just imagining it. It is very dull to lift a gun toward a wall with nothing on it. I decided to create a Python program to have a person practice and shoot as if at a range [2]. The program lets a person practice the correct technique which involves not moving the gun with their arms, but with their core. The shooters can practice peripheral vision, pulling the trigger at the right time and following the target. Results have shown that people were more engaged using the program while lifting a gun, than only lifting a gun towards the wall.

Applicable design codes for power plant components and pressure vessels demand for a design check against progressive plastic deformation. In the simplest case, this demand is satisfied by compliance with shakedown rules in connection with elastic analyses. The possible non-compliance implicates the requirement of ratcheting analyses on elastic-plastic basis. In this case, criteria are specified on maximum allowable accumulated growth strain without clear guidance on what material models for cyclic plasticity are to be used. This is a considerable gap and a challenge for the practicing CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) engineer. As a follow-up to two independent previous papers PVP2013-98150 ASME [1] and PVP2014-28772 [2] it is the aim of this paper to close this gap by giving further detailed recommendation on the appropriate application of the nonlinear kinematic material model of Chaboche on an engineering scale and based on implementations already available within commercial finite element codes such as ANSYS® and ABAQUS®. Consistency of temperature-dependent runs in ANSYS® and ABAQUS® is to be checked. All three papers together constitute a comprehensive guideline for elasto-plastic ratcheting analysis. The following issues are examined and/or referenced: • Application of monotonic or cyclic material data for ratcheting analysis based on the Chaboche material model • Discussion of using monotonic and cyclic data for assessment of the (non-stabilized) cyclic deformation behavior • Number of backstress terms to be applied for consistent ratcheting results • Consideration of the temperature dependency of the relevant material parameters • Consistency of temperature-dependent runs in ANSYS® and ABAQUS® • Identification of material parameters dependent on the number of backstress terms • Identification of material data for different types of material (carbon steel, austenitic stainless steel) including the appropriate determination of the elastic limit • Quantification of conservatism of simple elastic-perfectly plastic behavior • Application of engineering versus true stress-strain data • Visual checks of data input consistency • Appropriate type of allowable accumulated growth strain. This way, a more accurate inelastic analysis methodology for direct practical application to real world examples in the framework of the design code conforming elasto-plastic ratcheting check is proposed.

One of the aims of the dynamic analysis of human gait is to know the joint forces and torques that the musculoskeletal system produces during the motion. For this purpose, an 18 segment 3D model with 57 degrees of freedom is implemented. The analysis of a captured motion can be addressed by means of forward or inverse dynamic analyses. In this work, both analyses are computed using multibody dynamics techniques. The forward dynamic analysis is carried out with the aim of simulating the movement of the multibody system using the results of the inverse problem as input data. Since the inverse analysis is solved using a dynamically consistent methodology, the forward dynamic analysis allows us to simulate up to the 90% of the gait cycle without any controller. After that, a proportional derivative (PD) controller is implemented to stabilize the system, which gets to simulate the complete captured motion. Moreover, the dynamic contribution of the controller is really low and the simulated motion is extremely close to the original one. The methodology presented allows us to validate the correctness of the inverse dynamics analysis and it is an intermediate step towards the prediction problem: it requires dynamical consistency too, but the uncertainties involved in the problem are lower than in a predictive approach.

I examine whether and how local income inequality affects household debt and its composition using household panel data for Australia from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey. I find that middle-income households without liquidity and credit constraints tend to borrow more for non-residential investment purposes as local income inequality rises, suggesting that they are trying to close the income gap. They also appear to try to close the consumption gap by accumulating more car debt with a rise in local income inequality. Both findings are consistent with households 'keeping up with the Joneses', but unlikely to have implications for macrofinancial stability given that households taking on debt appear well resourced.

In this paper, we examine how the business and interest rate cycles in developed countries affect FDI to developing countries. After aggregating flows into three big source areas (the U.S., Europe and Japan), we find FDI flows to be countercyclical with respect to both output and interest rate cycles in the first two, whereas in Japan they display either no cyclical behavior or mild procyclical behavior. This finding is consistent with the fact that FDI outflows and local investment tend to move in opposite directions during the cycles in the U.S. and Europe, reflecting investors' arbitrage among different investment opportunities. In sum, and contrary to what is usually claimed, we conclude that recessions in industrial countries are likely to increase FDI flows, particularly to those countries with close ties with the U.S. and Europe.

Using a New Keynesian Phillips curve, we document the rapid and persistent increase in the natural rate of unemployment, ut*, in the aftermath of the pandemic and characterize its implications for inflation dynamics. While the bulk of the inflation surge is attributed to temporary supply factors, we also find an important role for current and expected negative unemployment gaps. Through the lens of the model, the 2022-23 disinflation was driven by the expectation that the unemployment gap will close through a progressive decline in ut* and a rise in the unemployment rate. This implies that convergence to long-run price stability depends critically on expectations about labor market tightness. Using a variety of cross-sectional data sources, we provide corroborating evidence of unusually tight labor market conditions, consistent with our estimated rise in ut*.

While there is evidence of gender differences in leaders behavior, less is known about what drives these gaps. This paper uncovers the role of electoral incentives. Using a close election regression discontinuity design in Brazil, we first show that female mayors handled the COVID-19 crisis differently over the year 2020, which ended with new municipal elections. We find that having a female mayor led to more deaths per capita at the beginning of the pandemic a period characterized by uncertainty about the severity of the threat but to fewer deaths per capita later in the year, a period where this uncertainty was reduced. We provide additional evidence that female mayors were less likely to close non-essential businesses early on, and more likely to do so at the end, and that residents in female-led municipalities were more likely to stay at home in the weeks surrounding the election. We then show that these results can be rationalized by a simple political agency model where politicians seek re-election and where voters assess female and male politicians actions differently. Consistent with this interpretation, we show that the gender differences we find are driven exclusively by mayors who were not term-limited and thus allowed to run for re-election, and that the effects are stronger in municipalities with greater gender discrimination. Taken together, the results suggest that female and male leaders face different electoral incentives and adapt their policy decisions to voters expectations.

Traffic congestion is a prevalent issue during peak travel hours on roads in the United States. This study focuses on identifying suitable road links in Charlotte, North Carolina, for implementing variable speed limit (VSL) signs. Real-world traffic speed data collected over one year was analyzed to identify specific road links with favorable characteristics for VSL sign installations. The analysis considered weekdays, weekends, and specific times of the day to capture variations in speed patterns. The results revealed that roads with lower speed limits consistently experienced speeds exceeding the posted speed limits, suggesting additional enforcement or safety measures. For roads with higher speed limits, mean speeds were generally close to the speed limits, but the 85th percentile speeds exceeded them, indicating a potential need for speed management measures. Road links with a 45/50 mph speed limit display a unique pattern compared to other clusters. The mean speed on these roads decreases as the standard deviation increases. The findings contribute to understanding traffic speed patterns and provide valuable insights for transportation planning and management.

The populist Radical Right party, Vlaams Belang (VB), has consistently proved itself a successful electoral competitor in Belgian politics. Already in 2004, the party obtained 24% of the vote in Flanders, focusing on issues such as immigration, Flemish nationalism, crime and law and order. As of 2007, however, the party faced increasing competition from the Flemish nationalist party Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA), which has been able to present itself as a democratic alternative to the populist VB. In recent years, the VB has tended to radicalize rather than moderate its tone to differentiate itself from competitors. While foreign policy has not been a salient issue within VB ideology, various party members have developed close ties to the Putin regime since 2010. For example, Filip Dewinter, a prominent member of the VB, has met Russian officials and appeared in Russian media. Following the invasion of Ukraine, the VB was forced to shift its position on Putin’s regime. The current leader, Tom Van Grieken, has admitted he was seriously mistaken about Putin. Even Dewinter has strongly condemned Putin. At the same time, the VB remains sceptical about sanctions against Russia.

Most macroeconomic models impose a tight link between expected future short rates and the term structure of interest rates via the expectations hypothesis (EH). While the EH has been systematically rejected in the data, existing work evaluating the EH generally assumes either full-information rational expectations or stationarity of beliefs, or both. As such, these analyses are ill-equipped to refute the EH when these assumptions fail to hold, fueling hopes for a “resurrection” of the EH. We introduce a model of expectations formation which features time-varying means and accommodates deviations from rationality. This model tightly matches the entire joint term structure of expectations for output growth, inflation, and the short-term interest rate from all surveys of professional forecasters in the U.S. We show that deviations from rationality and drifting long-run beliefs consistent with observed measures of expectations, while sizable, do not come close to bridging the gap between the term structure of expectations and the term structure of interest rates. Not only is the EH decisively rejected in the data, but model-implied short-rate expectations generally display, at best, only a weak co-movement with the forward rates of corresponding maturities.

Streamflow influences the distribution and organization of high water marks along rivers and streams in a landscape. The federal definition of ordinary high water mark (OHWM) is defined by physical and vegetative field indicators that are used to identify inundation extents of ordinary high water levels without any reference to the relationship between streamflow and regulatory definition. Streamflow is the amount, or volume, of water that moves through a stream per unit time. This study explores regional characteristics and relationships between field-delineated OHWMs and frequency-magnitude streamflow metrics derived from a flood frequency analysis. The elevation of OHWM is related to representative constant-level discharge return periods with national average return periods of 6.9 years using partial duration series and 2.8 years using annual maximum flood frequency approaches. The range in OHWM return periods is 0.5 to 9.08, and 1.05 to 11.01 years for peaks-over-threshold and annual maximum flood frequency methods, respectively. The range of OHWM return periods is consistent with the range found in national studies of return periods related to bankfull streamflow. Hydraulic models produced a statistically significant relationship between OHWM and bank-full, which reinforces the close relationship between the scientific concept and OHWM in most stream systems.

This open file reports geochemical data for stream and groundwater samples collected around the Casino porphyry Cu-Au-Mo deposit, one of the largest and highest-grade deposits of its kind in Canada. The calc-alkaline porphyry is hosted in a Late Cretaceous quartz monzonite and associated breccias in the unglaciated region of west central Yukon. Water chemistry around the deposit was investigated because: (i) the deposit has not yet been disturbed by mining; (ii) the deposit was known to have metal-rich waters in local streams; and (iii) the deposit has atypically preserved ore zones. Stream water samples were collected at 22 sites and groundwater samples were collected from eight sites. Surface and groundwaters around the Casino deposit are anomalous with respect to Cd (up to 5.4 µg/L), Co (up to 64 µg/L), Cu (up to 1657 µg/L), Mo (up to 25 µg/L), As (up to 17 µg/L), Re (up to 0.7 µg/L), and Zn (up to 354 µg/L) concentrations. The stable isotopes of O and H of the groundwaters are essentially identical to the surface waters and plot close to the local and global meteoric water lines, indicating that the waters represent modern recharge, consistent with the generally low salinities of all the waters (total dissolved solids range from 98 to 1320 mg/L). Sulfur and Sr isotopes are consistent with proximal waters interacting with the Casino rocks and mineralization; a sulfide-rich bedrock sample from the deposit has delta-34S = -1.2 permille and proximal groundwaters are only slightly heavier (-0.3 to 3.1 permille). These geochemical and isotopic results indicate that surface water geochemistry is a suitable medium for mineral exploration for porphyry-style mineralization in the Yukon, and similar unglaciated regions in Canada. The atypical geochemical signature (Mo, Se, Re, As, Cu) of these types of deposits are typically reflected in the water chemistry and S isotopes provide a more local vectoring tool.

The microscopic composition of thirteen samples of epidote related to porphyry Cu mineralization was mapped using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) at the Geological Survey of Canada. The objective of this research is to improve the indicator mineral method of mineral exploration in glaciated terrains by utilizing the trace element composition of epidote. Six bedrock samples from porphyry Cu deposits of south-central British Columbia (Gibraltar, Mount Polley and Woodjam), three bedrock samples from the Nicola Group located close (<2 km) from the intrusions host of porphyry mineralization and afar (12 km), and four epidote grains from two till samples, one at Gibraltar and a second one at Mount Polley, were analyzed. Backscattered electron (BSE) images and the LA-ICP-MS maps show an heterogeneous distribution of Fe and Al in epidote following complex and mottled patterns and consistent zoning typically with high Fe and low Al concentrations in the core progressing to low Fe and high Al concentrations in the rim. Trace elements are heterogeneously distributed in epidote following the Fe/Al zoning in some samples. Evidence of late infiltration of trace elements (e.g. Cu, Zn, and REE) along fractures in epidote is observed in some samples. The variability in epidote composition is thought to be related to the changing conditions during its crystallization including oxidation state, pH, oxygen fugacity, fluid composition, temperature and pressure. Multiple LA-ICP-MS spot analyses need to be conducted on this mineral to fully evaluate its composition as an indicator mineral of porphyry Cu mineralization.
