<p class="abstrak" align="center"><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p class="abstrak">This research is a form of literature review that is part of my research that aims to investigate the views of Muslims in West Sumatra (Minangkabau Society) towards the Arabic language and how it drives their motivation to learn it. The lack of research on this issue in Indonesia, especially in the West Sumatran region, is the starting point of this study. In fact, a series of studies with the same theme have been conducted in various parts of the world such as in the United States (Belnap, 1987; Brosh, 2013; Husseinali, 2005, 2006; Nichols, 2014; Seymour-Jorn, 2004; Taha, 2007), Canada (Belnap, 1987), Malaysia (Abu et al., 2010; Aladin, 2010, 2013), Saudi Arabia (Al-Osaimi &amp; Wedell, 2014), and the United Kingdom (Jaspal &amp; Coyle, 2010). In terms of identity background, learners who establish some form of connection with the Arabic language are referred to as heritage learners (Brosh, 2013). I can conclude that religious identity is the strongest background that maintains Muslims' close relationship with Arabic.</p><br /><p class="abstrak" align="center"><strong>Abstrak</strong></p><p class="abstrak"><em>Penelitian ini merupakan bentuk kajian pustaka yang merupakan bagian dari penelitian saya yang bertujuan untuk menyelidiki pandangan umat Islam di Sumatera Barat (Masyarakat Minangkabau) terhadap bahasa Arab dan bagaimana hal tersebut mendorong motivasi mereka untuk mempelajarinya. Padahal, serangkaian penelitian dengan tema yang sama telah dilakukan di berbagai belahan dunia seperti di Amerika Serikat (Belnap, 1987; Brosh, 2013; Husseinali, 2005, 2006; Nichols, 2014; Seymour-Jorn, 2004; Taha, 2007), Kanada (Belnap, 1987), Malaysia (Abu dkk., 2010; Aladin, 2010, 2013), Arab Saudi (Al-Osaimi &amp; Wedell, 2014), dan Inggris (Jaspal &amp; Coyle, 2010). Writing about mathematics holds a wealth of benefits for students. When students are given opportunities to write in math class, it helps develop mathematical thinking and language (Carter 2009; McCarthy 2008; Yang 2005), encourages self-reflection (Carter 2009; Danielson 2010; O'Kelley 2013), and provides a better way to organize ideas (Linhart 2014; Rogers 2014). Many teachers incorporate journaling and other types of reflective writing into their instruction already (Sjoberg, Slavit, and Coon 2004; Sanders 2009), but what about other forms of writing? NCTM states the importance of writing, in that students in the middle grades should be “more explicit about basing their writing on a sense of audience and purpose” (NCTM 2000, p. 62). How can we help students develop this important skill in math class?.

<p class="Default">Extended cognition holds that cognitive processes sometimes leak into the world (Dawson, 2013). A recent trend among proponents of extended cognition has been to put pressure on phenomena thought to be safe havens for internalists (Sneddon, 2011; Wilson, 2010; Wilson &amp; Lenart, 2014). This paper attempts to continue this trend. It is argued that because music perception is as part of a locationally wide computational system, it is an extended process. In articulating the view, the work of J.J Gibson (1966, 1986) and Robert Wilson (1994b, 1995, 2004) is drawn on. The view is defended from objections and its implications outlined. The paper concludes with a comparison to Krueger&rsquo;s (2014) view of the &ldquo;musically extended emotional mind&rdquo;.&nbsp;</p><br />

<p class="Abstrak">ABSTRACT</p><p class="IsiAbstrak">This study presents information about the dynamics of industrial scale tuna longline development in Indonesia, especially tuna longline fisheries in the Eastern Indian Ocean. This study uses a descriptive method based on tuna longline enumeration data landed at Benoa port from 2012 to 2015. Benoa is one of the three main fishing ports in Indonesia, besides Nizam Zachman (Jakarta) and Cilacap (Central Java). It contributes the largest number of tuna catches to 60% of the total long-scale tuna catch industry in the Indian Ocean. This makes Benoa as the main barometer of industrial tuna fisheries in Indonesia. Industrial scale of tuna longline fisheries activities have dropped significantly to 76% from 2004 to 2015. Highest decline occurred in 2004 to 2006 by 43% followed by 2009 to 2010 at 41% and 2014 to 2015 at 19%. Enumeration data coverage in Benoa port is about 57% to 64% of total ship landing. Catch dominated by export products followed by local quality and bycatch products. The catch composition is dominated by four tuna species (BET, YFT, SBT and ALB) which reach 88% of the total catch followed by bycatch of 6.23% and fish with beaks of 5.46%. In period 2012 to 2014, fishing efforts are directly proportional to the number of ships and tuna production, but in 2015, capture efforts, CPUE and catch production increased along with the decline in the number of ships operating.</p><p class="Keyword">Keyword: Benoa Port, enumeration program, tuna longline</p><p class="Abstrak">ABSTRAK</p><p class="IsiAbstrak">Studi ini menyajikan informasi tentang dinamika perkembangan rawai tuna skala industri di Indonesia khususnya perikanan rawai tuna di Samudera Hindia Bagian Timur. Processes having the same bridges as a given reference Markov process constitute its reciprocal class. In this paper we study the reciprocal class of compound Poisson processes whose jumps belong to a finite set A in R^d. We propose a characterization of the reciprocal class as the unique set of probability measures on which a family of time and space transformations induces the same density, expressed in terms of the reciprocal invariants. The geometry of A plays a crucial role in the design of the transformations, and we use tools from discrete geometry to obtain an optimal characterization. We deduce explicit conditions for two Markov jump processes to belong to the same class. Finally, we provide a natural interpretation of the invariants as short-time asymptotics for the probability that the reference process makes a cycle around its current state.

Ken Loach has been playing an important role for the British cinema for more than five decades now. His work has gained international regocnition and recieved various prestigious awards. Some of his films were even quite successful at the box office, nevertheless many people have still not heard of him. That is regrettable, because Loach is without doubt one of the best in his field. This paper is meant to show what distinguishes his films from the work of other directors and explains why his films are of such great value. Loach's career can be broadly divided into three stages, which will be specified in the first chapter of the paper. Afterwards three examples were chosen to illustrate Loach's working methods and the results of these. The films Kes (1969), Riff-Raff (1991) and My Name Is Joe (1998) are dealt with in separate chapters in chronological order, in this way the development of Loach's career can be reproduced. First the contents and backgrounds of the particular films will be briefly explained, followed by the analysis of important aspects of Loach's work based on the examples.

This paper addresses the affirmative actions in Brazil aimed at the black population, within the class society, taking into account the challenges, perspectives of access in undergraduate courses, with reference to Unioeste. It is a bibliographical and documentary research whose exposition is organized in three chapters. The theoretical-methodological method that guided this work is given by the analysis of the society of classes, understanding how the blacks are inserted in its interior. We recognize the Negro not as a social group apart, but as a constituent part of the whole working class. The implementation of the reserve system of vacancies/ quotas in public universities has been presented as a promoter of the democratization of access to opportunities in higher education. Despite the legislation and new public policies implemented in the last decades, such initiatives are still insufficient in the face of the reality of inequalities and social exclusion, since such policy is the subject of many discussions and controversies reducing the subject to a simplistic view, against or in favor Studying social practices, we try to get out of this polarization to understand the interpretations about blacks in the History of Education. From this historiographical analysis we find that they have been inferior in traditional history. When analyzing the black, in the work and in the school education from the beginning of the Brazilian colonization, we verified some paradoxes, like its reduced participation in the formal education, and its later attempt of inclusion. Despite being the majority of the Brazilian population, the black presence in the Brazilian Higher Education is very low in relation to the whites, mainly in the Unioeste campuses. After several centuries of the discovery of Brazil, the socioeconomic differences between whites and blacks remain. With the approval of Law nº. 12,711, of August 29, 2012, which allocates 50% of vacancies to self-declared candidates, blacks, brown or indigenous people, it has resumed debates on affirmative action, not only at an educational level, but also at a social level. The process of implementing this Law points to the need to problematize the racial question within the universities. Based on this perspective, this research questions whether the policy of reserving vacancies / quotas really contributes to the democratization of access and permanence in higher education.

Our thesis is that the unequal distribution of important assets affects the possibilities of life of millions of people. The problems related to the conceptualization and measurement of poverty and wealth continue to challenge the specialists, but some contributions have been made in recent years in order to characterize the phenomena and to explain the differentials found in the chances of being rich or the risks of being poor. Taking advantage of this trend, our work looks at the problem of poverty and the issues of wealth in Brazil, under a sociological perspective, assessing the results through relevant social divides, especially of social classes. We use data from the PNAD 2002-2014 to compare the evolution of the indicators of poverty and wealth in the country. Through logistic models was possible considering the level and trend of the probabilities of poverty and wealth as a result of the various categories of social groups. The definition of poverty is take from different concepts and operationalized in different spaces. For definition of the rich, we use the monthly income from all sources, with lines drawn for the 10%, 5% and 1% richer. Our results show the improvement of the situation of the population in relation to survival conditions and meeting the basic needs, while at the same time remain very vivid the distinctions of class and other divisions for more relativistic notions of poverty and also to the chances of wealth.

The work deals with the analysis of power and its various aspects, namely economic power, political power and power-knowledge. Throughout the work various models are used that are drawn from various contemporary authors, M. Foucault, M. N. Rothbard, G. Deleuze, Z. Bauman among them. The work tries to answer the question posed by M. Foucault: How does Power create truth-discourses that have such a great effect upon us? To answer this question the tradition of socialism is analyzed. The analysis of socialism provides a clear cut example how Power can be augmented via various discourses that are sympathetic towards its growth and how various attempts by the Power to suppress socialism have actually entrenched and radicalized the socialist discourse among its adherents.

Creative economies can establish sustainable development through co-creative cultural projects. Project management practice and particularly project governance can balance creativity and control fostering the co-creative environment that inspires and ignites innovation. The success of those cultural projects is the platform that leads to long-term development and growth.   This thesis work aims to answer the following research question, “How will project governance structure provide the environment for the co-creation approach to flourish and enhance project performance?” The objective of this research is to examine how the project governance structure creates a conducive environment for the co-creation approach to burgeon and boost project performance.   The authors investigate the subject by building a theoretical frame of reference, formulating a proposition and designing the research strategy in order to answer the research question. This research applies the qualitative method through semi-structured interviews based on a case study on Umeå 2014 as the ECoC. Thirteen respondents participated in this research, all of whom are members of the Umeå 2014 Project Team. As secondary data, six interviews with Umeå 2014 project owners were investigated and analysed in order to support and increase the reliability of the research findings from the primary data analysis. All primary and secondary data were analysed based on the theoretical framework.   The research revealed that project governance nurtures the environment necessary for co-creation to flourish. The co-creation approach will flourish when developed within the mixture of hierarchical and relational project governance structures that foster co-creative elements. The synergy between co-creation and project governance will boost the potential to achieve sustainable development and long-term growth.

Resumo:
Teachers are moral agents. Acting professionally in loco parentis teachers have a legal and moral duty of care to students (DES, 2017). Moreover, they can be regarded as moral ‘role models’ (Bergen, 2006; Lumpkin, 2013). Professional codes of practice assist teachers in their moral agency (Alberta Teachers’ Association, 2004; CDET, 2017; DfE, 2011; Education Council, 2017; Teaching Council, 2012; 2016; World Class Teachers, 2017). In conjunction with official codes of conduct, TE ethics programmes contribute to the development of “a moral language” and raise awareness of moral agency in teaching (Shapira-Lishchinsky, 2010). In 2014 the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) and the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) jointly developed a cross-institutional training programme entitled ‘The Ethical Teacher Programme’, designed to facilitate student teachers to reflect upon professionalism and ethics during School Placement. The programme incorporated both a study of the Teaching Council Code of Professional Conduct for Teachers (Code) (2012) and explorations of selected ethical ‘case studies’ in teaching, using collaborative learning (CL) and role play strategies. The ‘ethical dilemma’ approach employed mirrored literature studies (Colenerud, 1997; Husu & Tiri, 2003; Klassen, 2002). Unique to the approach, however, was the method of application of selected classical and contemporary ethical philosophies to moral dilemmas in teaching. The programme was designed to include a one-hour introductory lecture on professionalism and ethics (from the perspectives of moral literacy and ethical theory) followed by a two-hour applied workshop. The workshop employed student-centred, active teaching and learning methods, specifically, collaborative learning, role play and case study analysis. Six ethical philosophical principles (or ‘lenses’) were integrated into programme delivery - teleology, deontology, virtue ethics, justice ethics, care ethics and relationality ethics. These lenses were applied to real-world teaching case studies. One cohort to which this training programme is offered annually is the student teachers on the Professional Master of Education (PME) programme in NUIG. The PME cohort (2015-2016) is the focus of the present study. The study sought a critical reflection on, and evaluation of, this training programme, from a student perspective. This study is phase one of a larger on-going study.

The Shia Hazaras in Pakistan are one of the most persecuted religious minorities. According to a 2019 report produced by the National Commission for Human Rights, a government formed commission, at least 509 Hazaras have been killed since 2013 (NCHR 2018: 2). According to one of the Vice Chairs of the Human Rights Commission Pakistan, the country's leading human rights watchdog, between 2009 and 2014, nearly 1,000 Hazaras were killed in sectarian violence (Butt 2014). The present population of Shia Hazaras is the result of three historical migrations from Afghanistan (Hashmi 2016: 2). The first phase of migration occurred in 1880 1901 when Abd al Rahman Khan came to power in 1880 in Afghanistan and declared war against the Hazaras as a result of a series of revolts they made against the regime.

HORIZON 2020 was the European Commission’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation between 2014 and 2020. With a budget of nearly €80 billion, it was the largest financial instrument for research and innovation ever in the European Union. Its predecessor, the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7), for the period 2007–2013, had a budget of just over €50 billion. The political goal behind Horizon 2020 was to ensure that Europe produces world-class science and technology that drives economic growth. The framework programme was built around three main programme sections, known as Pillars, complemented by other work programmes, including the Joint Research Centre, the Euratom Programme and the Public-Private Partnerships.

Dousman Creek, located in northeastern Iowa, is a Class ?B? coldwater stream that supports a trout population and is listed among the Outstanding Iowa Waters (Iowa Department of Natural Resources 2010, 2016). The Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network (Heartland Network) of the National Park Service (NPS) has been monitoring aquatic communities (fish and invertebrates) in Dousman Creek within Effigy Mounds National Monument (NM) since 2008. Corresponding physical habitat and water quality were also collected during biotic sampling. The objectives of this long-term monitoring program are to assess the status and trends in the biotic stream community and relate these trends to environmental variables. The purpose of this report is to summarize the baseline aquatic community data collected during three sampling events conducted from 2008 to 2017. The fish community was dominated by the intolerant cool/cold-water species Brown trout (Salmo trutta) and Mottled sculpin (Cottus bairdii) in 2008, while more tolerant white sucker (Catostomus comersonii) and Johnny darter (Etheostoma nigrum) were most abundant in 2014. During 2017, fish community composition was more evenly distributed among species present. Benthic invertebrate samples were dominated by the moderately intolerant mayfly genus Pseudocloeon and blackfly genus Simulium in 2008 and 2014, while the invertebrate samples in 2017 were dominated primarily by a tolerant, mayfly taxa (Baetis) and Oligochaetes. The abundance of aquatic invertebrates in 2017 was more than ten times lower than invertebrate abundance in 2008 and 2014. Water quality data collected by the Heartland Network did not indicate any of the five parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, specific conductance, or turbidity) exceeded the Iowa Department of Natural Resources water quality standards, however the number of hourly measurements were low (4?20 measurements) depending on year sampled. Three years of data are currently insufficient to fully characterize the stream integrity of Dousman Creek based on fish and invertebrate communities. Continued long-term monitoring of Dousman Creek will allow for better assessment of the biotic integrity and overall quality of the stream.

The Gulf Islands National Seashore (GUIS) vegetation inventory project classified and mapped vegetation on park-owned lands within the administrative boundary and estimated thematic map accuracy quantitatively. The project began in June 2016. National Park Service (NPS) Vegetation Mapping Inventory Program provided technical guidance. The overall process included initial planning and scoping, imagery procurement, field data collection, data analysis, imagery interpretation/classification, accuracy assessment (AA), and report writing and database development. Initial planning and scoping meetings took place during May, 2016 in Ocean Springs, Mississippi where representatives gathered from GUIS, the NPS Gulf Coast Inventory and Monitoring Network, and Colorado State University. Primary imagery used for interpretation was 4-band (RGB and CIR) orthoimages from 2014 and 2016 with resolutions of 15 centimeters (cm) (Florida only) and 30 cm. Supplemental imagery with varying coverage across the study area included National Aerial Imagery Program 50 cm imagery for Mississippi (2016) and Florida (2017), 15 and 30 cm true color Digital Earth Model imagery for Mississippi (2016 and 2017), and current and historical true-color Google Earth and Bing Map imagery. National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration National Geodetic Survey 30 cm true color imagery from 2017 (post Hurricane Nate) supported remapping the Mississippi barrier islands after Hurricane Nate. The preliminary vegetation classification included 59 United States National Vegetation Classification (USNVC) associations. Existing vegetation and mapping data combined with vegetation plot data contributed to the final vegetation classification. Quantitative classification using hierarchical clustering and professional expertise was supported by vegetation data collected from 250 plots in 2016 and 29 plots in 2017 and 2018, as well as other observational data. The final vegetation classification includes 39 USNVC associations and 5 park special types; 18 forest and woodland, 7 shrubland, 17 herbaceous, and 2 sparse vegetation types were identified. The final GUIS map consists of 38 map classes. Land cover classes include four types: non-vegetated barren land / borrow pit, developed open space, developed low – high intensity, and water/ocean. Of the 34 vegetation map classes, 26 represent a single USNVC association/park special, six map classes contain two USNVC associations/park specials, and two map classes contain three USNVC associations/park specials. Forest and woodland associations had an abundance of sand pine (Pinus clausa), slash pine (Pinus elliottii), sand live oak (Quercus geminata), yaupon (Ilex vomitoria), wax myrtle (Morella cerifera), and saw palmetto (Serenoa repens). Shrubland associations supported dominant species such as eastern baccharis (Baccharis halimifolia), yaupon (Ilex vomitoria), wax myrtle (Morella cerifera), saw palmetto (Serenoa repens), and sand live oak (Quercus geminata). Herbaceous associations commonly included camphorweed (Heterotheca subaxillaris), needlegrass rush (Juncus roemerianus), bitter seabeach grass (Panicum amarum var. amarum), gulf bluestem (Schizachyrium maritimum), saltmeadow cordgrass (Spartina patens), and sea oats (Uniola paniculata). The final GUIS vegetation map consists of 1,268 polygons totaling 35,769.0 hectares (ha) or 88,387.2 acres (ac). Mean polygon size excluding water is 3.6 ha (8.9 ac). The most abundant land cover class is open water/ocean which accounts for approximately 31,437.7 ha (77,684.2 ac) or 87.9% of the total mapped area. Natural and ruderal vegetation consists of 4,176.8 ha (10,321.1 ac) or 11.6% of the total area. Within the natural and ruderal vegetation types, herbaceous types are the most extensive with 1945.1 ha (4,806.4 ac) or 46.5%, followed by forest and woodland types with 804.9 ha (1,989.0 ac) or 19.3%, sparse vegetation types with 726.9 ha (1,796.1 ac) or 17.4%, and shrubland types with 699.9 ha (1,729.5 ac) or 16.8%. Developed open space, which can include a matrix of roads, parking lots, park-like areas and campgrounds account for 153.8 ha (380.0 ac) or 0.43% of the total mapped area. Artificially non-vegetated barren land is rare and only accounts for 0.74 ha (1.82 ac) or 0.002% of the total area. We collected 701 AA samples to evaluate the thematic accuracy of the vegetation map. Final thematic accuracy, as a simple proportion of correct versus incorrect field calls, is 93.0%. Overall weighted map class accuracy is 93.6%, where the area of each map class was weighted in proportion to the percentage of total park area. This method provides more weight to larger map classes in the park. Each map class had an individual thematic accuracy goal of at least 80%. The hurricane impact area map class was the only class that fell below this target with an accuracy of 73.5%. The vegetation communities impacted by the hurricane are highly dynamic and regenerated quickly following the disturbance event, contributing to map class disagreement during the accuracy assessment phase. No other map classes fell below the 80% accuracy threshold. In addition to the vegetation polygon database and map, several products to support park resource management are provided including the vegetation classification, field key to the associations, local association descriptions, photographic database, project geodatabase, ArcGIS .mxd files for map posters, and aerial imagery acquired for the project. The project geodatabase links the spatial vegetation data layer to vegetation classification, plot photos, project boundary extent, AA points, and the PLOTS database. The geodatabase includes USNVC hierarchy tables allowing for spatial queries of data associated with a vegetation polygon or sample point. All geospatial products are projected using North American Datum 1983 (NAD83) in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Zone 16 N. The final report includes methods and results, contingency tables showing AA results, field forms, species list, and a guide to imagery interpretation. These products provide useful information to assist with management of park resources and inform future management decisions. Use of standard national vegetation classification and mapping protocols facilitates effective resource stewardship by ensuring the compatibility and widespread use throughout the NPS as well as other federal and state agencies. Products support a wide variety of resource assessments, park management and planning needs. Associated information provides a structure for framing and answering critical scientific questions about vegetation communities and their relationship to environmental processes across the landscape.

The middle class, or rather middle classes, to do justice to their heterogeneity, have been and continue to be at the centre of the long political and economic crisis that has been ravaging Brazil since 2014. Available interpretations that try to explain the positions taken by different political authors are biased by structural, ideological, or cultural determinism. To escape these determinisms, I draw on Stuart Hall’s political sociology in order to understand the link between the class situation of the middle classes and their constitution as political subjects of various shades as contingent intersectional articulations. The emphasis on contingency obviously does not imply a belief that political developments are fortuitous and detached from social structures. Nor does it ignore the existence of groups with deeply held ideological or cultural convictions who consistently adopt, over long periods of time, political attitudes compatible with these beliefs. However, taken as a whole, the middle classes have shown a very heterogeneous and changing political trajectory over time. They adhere to discourses - both right-wing or more egalitarian ones - and make political choices based on the power of these narratives to capture, in given circumstances, their anxieties, expectations, claims and aspirations.

This report provides summary data and outcomes for hip, knee and shoulder prosthesis types with no or minimal use in Australia. There are two classes of hip replacement no longer used: partial resurfacing and thrust plate. These are defined in the following section on hip replacement. These two classes of implant have not been used since 2014 and 2012, respectively. There are two bearing surfaces used in total conventional hip replacement that are no longer used: procedures performed with ceramic heads on metal bearings and procedures performed with metal heads on ceramic bearings. The rates of revision, reasons for revision and types of revision for procedures using ceramic head/metal bearings are provided. The number of procedures using metal heads/ceramic bearings is very low, so only a summary is provided for this combination. There is one prosthesis type used in total conventional hip replacement that has minimal use: exchangeable neck prostheses. The proportion of procedures using exchangeable necks continues to decline. There are two classes of partial knee replacement that are no longer used: Unispacer and bicompartmental. These are defined in the second section of this report on knee replacement. Unispacer and bicompartmental have not been used since 2005 and 2012, respectively. There was one procedure for partial resurfacing undertaken in 2022. There is one class of shoulder replacement no longer used: total resurfacing anatomic. This class is defined in the section on shoulder replacement. Total resurfacing anatomic shoulder replacement was last used in 2020. This Report is one of 16 supplementary reports to complete the AOANJRR Annual Report for 2023. Information on the background, purpose, aims, benefits and governance of the Registry can be found in the Introductory chapter of the 2023 Hip, Knee and Shoulder Arthroplasty Annual Report. The Registry data quality processes including data collection, validation and outcomes assessment, are provided in detail in the Data Quality section of the introductory chapter of the 2023 Hip, Knee and Shoulder Arthroplasty Annual Report: https://aoanjrr.sahmri.com/annual-reports-2023.

This paper examines the efficacy of class-size reductions as a strategy to improve pupils’ learning outcomes in India. It uses a credible identification strategy to address the endogeneity of class-size, by relating the difference in a student’s achievement score across subjects to the difference in his/her class size across subjects. Pupil fixed effects estimation shows a relationship between class size and student achievement which is roughly flat or non-decreasing for a large range of class sizes from 27 to 51, with a negative effect on learning outcomes occurring only after class size increases beyond 51 pupils. The class-size effect varies by gender and by subject-stream. The fact that up to a class-size of roughly 40 in science subjects and roughly 50 in non-science subjects, there is no reduction in pupil learning as class size increases, implies that there is no learning gain from reducing class size below 40 in science and below 50 in non-science. This has important policy implications for pupil teacher ratios (PTRs) and thus for teacher appointments in India, based on considerations of cost-effectiveness. When generalised, our findings suggest that India experienced a value-subtraction from spending on reducing class-sizes, and that the US$3.6 billion it spent in 2017-18 on the salaries of 0.4 million new teachers appointed between 2010 and 2017 was wasteful spending rather than an investment in improving learning. We show that India could save US$ 19.4 billion (Rupees 1,45,000 crore in Indian currency) per annum by increasing PTR from its current 22.8 to 40, without any reduction in pupil learning.
