The paper demonstrates the significance of commemorative and anniversary philosophical medals that are seen as a special visual aid for problematic issues in the history of philosophy specification. The author puts forward the thesis that such medals can clarify the perception of philosophical doctrine and the context of philosophical doctrine consideration at a particular time. So, they greatly assist as an additional historical and philosophical source, but they can hardly be helpful with the interpretation of either various aspects of a philosophical doctrine or a particular statement of a particular philosopher. The rationale for the thesis presents the analysis of four philosophical medals: the medal commemorating the foundation of the alethophile society (1740), A. Abramsonʼs medal in honor of I. Kantʼs sixtieth anniversary (1784), A. Abramsonʼs medal for the death of I. Kant (1804), A.L. Heldʼs medals in honor of the sixtieth anniversary of G.W.F. Hegel (1830). If the first three medals contribute to a better understanding of the philosophical traits of the German Enlightenment, the reasons for appealing to Horace's words “sapere aude”, Kant's peculiarity as an Enlightenmentist, philosophical meaning of the Kantian Copernican Revolution and the transformation of the perception of the “Critique of Pure Reason” in the late 18th century, expectations regarding the fourth medal has proved misplaced. It cannot clarify the Hegelian phrase about reason as a rose on the cross of modernity and reconciliation with reality. In addition, in the course of clarifying the meaning of the four aforementioned medals, the author also turns to the commemorative medal of Chr. Wolff by J. Dassier (c. 1733), the medal for the return of Chr. Wolff to Halle by J.Chr. Koch (1740) and the medal for Kantʼs death by F.W. Loos (1804).

Modifying additives impact – pro-oxidants – on low-density polyethylene oxidative degradation under short-term aging conditions in a thermostat with forced convection at 70 °C and ultraviolet irradiation with different exposures (48, 96, 144 h) was studied. It is concluded that for polyethylene films modified with stearates of metals of variable valence, under short-term aging conditions, the formation of aldehydes (1733–1740 cm-1) and carboxyl (1700 cm-1) was observed and accompanied by a sharp decrease in the intensity of absorption bands at 1465–1470 cm-1, which is specific to stretching and bending deformations of CH2 of the polyethylene polymer matrix and indicating the destruction of polymer chains. It is shown that the short-term aging of oxidatively biodegradable polyethylene affects environmental and technological problems associated with the pollutants release, including in particular, formaldehyde and other pollutants.

Abstract We report herein a density functional theory study on the C–H bond activation of CH4 over several rutile-type metal oxide catalysts, namely IrO2(110), TiO2(110), and β-MnO2(110) surfaces. We find that CH4 is strongly chemisorbed on the IrO2(110) surface, which distorts the CH4 geometry. Together with a strong thermodynamic driving force derived from the formation of Ir–CH3 bond, the H–CH3 bond activation proceeds with a negative barrier. In contrast, a weakly chemisorbed CH4 molecule on the TiO2(110) surface cannot proceed to the C–H bond cleavage due to a high activation barrier and a low thermodynamic driving force. The reaction on the β-MnO2(110) surface, on the other hand, is found to begin with a weak CH4 physisorption, followed by the C–H bond scission with a low activation barrier. However, here, the formation of •CH3 radical is more preferred than the Mn–CH3 bond formation, most possibly due to the electrophilic nature of MnO that suitably renders the catalyst as a perfect electron acceptor for the H-atom abstraction of CH4. With such low barrier and stability of the •CH3 formation, we suggest β-MnO2(110) as a potential catalyst that is good not only for the H–CH3 bond activation but also for the methanol formation.

Araştırmakta olduğumuz dönem Osmanlı Devleti’nin Kafkasya siyasetinde özel bir aşamayı oluşturmaktadır. Bu dönemde Osmanlı Devleti Kafkasya’da güçlenme konusunda Doğu’da geleneksel rakibi Safevi evleti dışında Rusya İmparatorluğu ile de mücadele etmek zorunda kaldı. Osmanlı Devleti, önceki dönemlerde olduğu gibi, 1720-1730’lu yıllarda da rakipleri ile mücadelede yerli Müslüman yönetimleri güçlendirerek onlara güvenme siyasetini sürdürdü. Söz konusu yerel yönetimler arasında Azerbaycan’ın kuzeybatısında bulunan Sahur (İlisu) Sultanlığı, Şeki Hâkimliği ve Car-Tala Cemaatlikleri bölgesel ağırlığa sahipti. Bu durumu dikkate alan Osmanlı Devleti, söz konusu bölgesel güçlerle ilişkilere özel önem vermişti. Mevcut durumda yerel yöneticiler daha çok kendi çıkarlarını koruma yönünde hareket etseler de, Osmanlı-Safevi-Rusya rekabetinde Osmanlı yönetimini kabul etmeyi tercih ediyorlardı. Bu seçimde dinî faktör önemli bir rol oynamıştır. Çalışmamızda XVIII. yüzyılın 20-30’lu yıllarında Azerbaycan’ın kuzeybatı topraklarının Osmanlı Devleti’nin Kafkasya siyasetindeki yeri ve rolü dönemin kaynaklarına istinaden ele alınmıştır.

Aim. Search of healthy and edible alternative oils from algae. Such oil provides many health benefits mainly because of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) form of omega-3 fattyacids and some other micro nutrients in smaller amounts. Methods. Soxhlet extraction method was used to extract the oil with n-hexane as the solvent. The proximate composition was determined by AOAC methods, while the mineral contents were determined by AAS. FTIR and UV-Visible spectra of the oil were run using Agilent- FTIR Spectrometer and UV-Visible Spectrophotometer respectively. Results. The oil yield was very low (1.05%). The proximate composition reveals carbohydrate as the major nutrient in the residue (79.18%), others include lipid (8.03%), crude protein (5.00%), moisture (2.78%), crude fibre (3.01%) and ash (2.00%). The mineral composition reveals high amount of potassium (1602.5 mg/100g) and calcium (632.5 mg/100g) with low levels of phosphorous (14.9 mg/100g) and sodium (12.8 mg/100g). The FTIR spectrum of algae oil is similar to the normal vegetable oil. Stretching vibrations at 2922.2 cm-1 and 2855 cm-1 are attributed to methylene (-CH2--) and methyl (-CH3) groups while absorption bands at 1710 cm-1 and 1744 cm-1 showed carboxylic groups for algae oil and vegetable oil (control) which was attributed to C=O stretching vibrations (esters). The UV-Visible spectrum of algae oil showed two peaks at 408 nm and 660 nm for carotenoids and chlorophyll A respectively, which corroborate with previous studies. Conclusions. We conclude that the oil and cake characterized from Spirogyra porticallis has great potential for medicinal and nutritional usage.

Catalytic tar removal is one of the main challenges restricting the successful commercialization of biomass gasification. Hot gas cleaning using a heterogeneous catalyst is one of the methods used to remove tar. In order to economically remove tar, an efficient low-cost catalyst should be applied. Biomass char has the potential to be such a catalyst. In this work, the reactor parameters that affect the conversion of a model tar component “naphthalene” were investigated employing an in situ thermogravimetric analysis of a fixed bed of biomass char. The following reactor and catalyst parameters were investigated: bed temperature (750 to 900 °C), gas residence time in the char bed (0.4 to 2.4 s), char particle size (500 to 1700 μm), feed naphthalene concentration, feed gas composition (CO, CO2, H2O, H2, CH4, naphthalene, and N2), char properties, and char precursor. It was found that the biomass char has a high activity for naphthalene conversion. However, the catalytic performance of the biomass char was affected by the gasification reactions that consumed its carbon, and the coke deposition that reduced its activity. Furthermore, high ash and iron contents enhanced char activity. The results of this work will be used in the design of a process that uses biomass char as an auto-generated catalyst in the gasification process.

Bei den fr?hen Zuwanderern kann es sich nur um kleinere Verb?nde gehandelt haben, so da? zweifelllos keine gro?en ?St?mme? nach Griechenland vorgedrungen sind, wie man in der ?lteren Forschung angenommen hat. In Griechenland haben die Zuwanderer die Suffixe -ss und -nth oder -nd nicht erst kennengelernt, sondern zumindest zum Teil schon mitgebracht und vermutlich im 3. Jahrtausend v. Chr. die allm?hliche Entwicklung des sp?teren Griechischen eingeleitet. Impulse f?r die Entwicklung der materiellen Kultur gingen um 1700 v. Chr. von Kreta aus und beeinflussten in starkem Ma?e die mykenische Zeit mit ihren Palastsystemen, deren Zusammenbruch um 1200 v. Chr. aber nicht schon zum Ende der mykenischen Kultur f?hrte, wenn auch die Linear B-Schrift nicht mehr benutzt wurde und die Infrastrukturen der Machtzentren zusammenbrachen. Dies war zugleich die Voraussetzung f?r die Bildung kleinerer Siedlungen mit neuen F?hrungssystemen und Sozialstrukturen sowie mit einem jeweils eigenen Identit?tsbewu?tsein.

In modern cars a lot of effort is put on reducing the background noise level. Despite these efforts it is often difficult for persons in the rear seat(s) to hear the persons in the front seat. This is partly due to the background noise, but also geometry and acoustics properties of the passenger compartment.

The aim of this thesis was to implement a speech enhancement system to increase the audibility between the driver and the rear passenger(s). The speech enhancement system should not affect the directivity of the speech or increase the background noise level.

A speech enhancement system has been implemented on a DSP in a test car. A microphone was placed in front of the driver to collect his/her speech. The microphone signal was bandpass filtered to remove the main part of the background noise and to avoid aliasing. The signal was delayed before it was sent out in the rear loudspeaker. The delay made the speech from the driver reaching the rear passenger before the sound the rear loudspeakers. This delay was enough to get the right directivity of the sound, i.e. making speech sounding as if it came from the driver instead of the rear loudspeakers.

In the thesis other methods to reduce background noise and get directivity of the sound were evaluated, but not implemented in the test car. The evaluations of the system showed that the audibility was increased. At the same time the background noise level was not noticeable increased. The work has been performed at A2 Acoustics AB in Linköping, during spring 2003.

ABSTRACT DESIGN OF A MECHANISM FOR OPENING HACTHBACK CAR BAGGAGE DOOR Duran, Yusuf M.S., Department of Mechanical Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Eres Sö
ylemez September 2009, 65 Pages In this thesis, a new mechanism design for opening hatchback-car baggage door is introduced. Unlike the classical hinged doors used, this new design will include a mechanism so that the door will be opened vertically and thus occupy less space behind the car during the opening. In this fashion even the hatchback doors of closely parked cars may be opened. First, considering type synthesis, different mechanism types are investigated. In dimensional synthesis, with the help of Burmester theory, motion generation is applied. Using the circle and center point curves, considering link dimensions, transmission angle characteristics, branching and some order issues possible solutions that satisfy the position requirements are found. To actuate the mechanism, an appropriate gas-spring is sought. As a case study a prototype is manufactured and mounted on a sample hatchback car to check the mechanism performance.

Il volume raccoglie gli atti del convegno "Firenze e la lingua italiana tra nazione ed Europa" che si è tenuto nei giorni 27-28 maggio 2004 presso l'Aula Magna dell'Università degli Studi di Firenze e l'Accademia della Crusca. Firenze ha avuto, come è noto, un ruolo centrale nel processo di unificazione linguistica nazionale e grazie alla sua vocazione internazionale ha promosso la diffusione e la conoscenza della lingua e della cultura italiana in Europa e nel mondo. Al di là di ogni ottica celebrativa, quindi, il convegno ha permesso una discussione aperta sull'identità culturale della città nel contesto contemporaneo, attraverso una riflessione critica sulla sua storia (in particolare su alcuni momenti significativi della cultura fiorentina tra Otto e Novecento) e sul suo primato linguistico.

AbstractTo support the increasing spread of Electric Vehicles (EVs), Charging Stations (CSs) are being installed worldwide. The new generation of CSs employs the Vehicle-To-Grid (V2G) paradigm by implementing novel standards such as the ISO 15118. This standard enables high-level communication between the vehicle and the charging column, helps manage the charge smartly, and simplifies the payment phase. This novel charging paradigm, which connects the Smart Grid to external networks (e.g., EVs and CSs), has not been thoroughly examined yet. Therefore, it may lead to dangerous vulnerability surfaces and new research challenges.In this paper, we present EVExchange, the first attack to steal energy during a charging session in a V2G communication: i.e., charging the attacker’s car while letting the victim pay for it. Furthermore, if reverse charging flow is enabled, the attacker can even sell the energy available on the victim’s car! Thus, getting the economic profit of this selling, and leaving the victim with a completely discharged battery. We developed a virtual and a physical testbed in which we validate the attack and prove its effectiveness in stealing the energy. To prevent the attack, we propose a lightweight modification of the ISO 15118 protocol to include a distance bounding algorithm. Finally, we validated the countermeasure on our testbeds. Our results show that the proposed countermeasure can identify all the relay attack attempts while being transparent to the user.

Pool boiling experiments investigated the effect of inclination angle on the Critical Heat Flux (CHF) for saturation boiling of PF-5060 dielectric liquid on MicroPorous Copper (MPC) surfaces of different thicknesses (80 to 230 μm). The morphology of the surfaces, deposited using electrochemical processes, vary with the thickness, and hence CHF. The inclination angles investigated are 0° (upward facing), 60°, 90° (vertical), 120°, 150°, 160°, 170° and 180° (downward facing). CHF decreases with decreasing MPC thickness and/or increasing inclination angle. The CHF values in the upward facing orientation are 39%–67% higher than on smooth, polished Cu. For all MPC surfaces, CHF values in the downward facing orientation are ∼ 28% of those in the upward facing orientation (0°). The developed CHF correlation accounts for the effects of MPC thickness and inclination angle and is in agreement with experimental data to within ± 8%.

Abstract Boiling heat transfer (BHT) is a promising technique to remove a high heat flux emitted from next-generation electronic devices. However, critical heat flux (CHF) is a big problem in BHT because it restricts the maximum performance of the cooling devices using BHT. Nanofluid has been widely used to improve the CHF. In this study, the authors investigated the BHT of a compact cooling device at low pressure using a special nanofluid: that is made with partially soluble particles in water. The experimental result found that the CHF with the special nanofluid is 170 W/cm2 and is higher than that with nanofluid made with an insoluble nanoparticle.

A small scale model (length 1710 mm) of General Motor SUV was built and tested in the wind tunnel for expected wind conditions and road clearance. Two passive devices, rear screen which is plate behind the car and rear fairing where the end of the car is aerodynamically extended, were incorporated in the model and tested in the wind tunnel for different wind conditions. The conclusion is that rear screen could reduce drag up to 6.5% and rear fairing can reduce the drag by 26%. There were additional tests for front edging and rear vortex generators. The results for drag reduction were mixed. It should be noted that there are aesthetic and practical considerations that may allow only partial implementation of these or any drag reduction options.

Three syngases were selected from customer sites and the engine performance test was conducted on a single cylinder test engine (SCTE) to explore the engine operating limits and investigate the combustion characteristics for the simulation model development. Syngas has a wide range of lambda between the misfire and the detonation compared to conventional natural gas. Combustion of syngas 1 having no CH4 showed unique characteristics which are different from syngas 3. It appears that even a small amount of CH4 in the fuel would be important to lower the rate of the main branching reaction of hydrogen and mitigate the explosive reaction of the hydrogen. Lean operating limit of the tested syngas was observed when LFS (Laminar Flame Speed) and AFT (Adiabatic Flame Temperature) become around 5∼7 cm/s and 1660 ∼ 1720°C.

Structural and functional genomic approaches for marking and identifying genes that control chilling requirement in apricot and peach trees. Specific aims: 1) Identify and characterize the genetic nature of chilling requirement for flowering and dormancy break of vegetative shoots in Prunusgermplasm through the utilization of existing apricot (NeweYa'ar Research Center, ARO) and peach (Clemson University) genetic mapping populations; 2) Use molecular genetic mapping techniques to identify markers flanking genomic regions controlling chilling; 3) Comparatively map the regions controlling chilling requirement in apricot and peach and locate important genomic regions influencing chilling requirement on the Prunus functional genomic database as an initial step for identification of candidate genes; 4) Develop from the functional genomics database a set of markers facilitating the development of cultivars with optimized chilling requirements for improved and sustained fruit production in warm-winter environments. Dormant apricot (prunus armeniaca L.) and peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] trees require sustained exposure to low, near freezing, temperatures before vigorous floral and vegetative bud break is possible after the resumption of warm temperatures in the spring. The duration of chilling required (the chilling requirement, CR) is determined by the climatic adaptation of the particular cultivar, thus limiting its geographic distribution. This limitation is particularly evident when attempting to introduce superior cultivars to regions with very warm winter temperatures, such as Israel and the coastal southern United States. The physiological mechanism of CR is not understood and although breeding programs deliberately manipulate CR in apricot and peach crosses, robust closely associated markers to the trait are currently not available. We used segregating populations of apricot (100 Fl individuals, NeweYa'ar Research Center, ARO) and peach (378 F2 individuals, Clemson University) to discover several discreet genomic loci that regulate CR and blooming date. We used the extensive genomic/genetic resources available for Prunus to successfully combine our apricot and peach genetic data and identify five QTL with strong effects that are conserved between species as well as several QTL that are unique to each species. We have identified markers in the key major QTL regions for testing in breeding programs which we are carrying out currently; we have identified an initial set of candidate genes using the peach physical/transcriptome map and whole peach genome sequences and we are testing these currently to identify key target genes for manipulation in breeding programs. Our collaborative work to date has demonstrated the following: 1) CR in peach and apricot is predominantly controlled by a limited number ofQTL loci, seven detected in a peach F2 derived map comprising 65% of the character and 12 in an apricot Fl map comprising 71.6% and 55.6% of the trait in the Perfection and A. 1740 parental maps, respectively and that peach and apricot appear in our initial maps to share five genomic intervals containing potentially common QTL. 2) Application of common anchor markers of the Prunus/peach, physical/genetic map resources has allowed us not only to identify the shared intervals but also to have immediately available some putative candidate gene information from these intervals, the EVG region on LG1 in peach the TALY 1 region in apricot on LG2 in peach; and several others involved in vernalization pathways (LGI and LG7). 3) Mapped BACcontigs are easily defined from the complete physical map resources in peach through the common SSR markers that anchor our CR maps in the two species, 4) Sequences of BACs in these regions can be easily mined for additional polymorphic markers to use in MAS applications.

Increasing advancement in automotive technologies ensures that many more lightweight metals become added to the automotive components for the purpose of light weighting and passenger safety. The accidents are unexpected incidents most drivers cannot be avoided that trouble situation. Crash studies are among the most essential methods for enhancing automobile safety features. Crash simulations are attempting to replicate the circumstances of the initial crash. Frontal crashes are responsible for occupant injuries and fatalities 42% of accidents occur on frontal crash. This paper aims at studying the frontal collision of a passenger car frame for frontal crashes based on numerical simulation of a 35 MPH. The structure has been designed to replicate a frontal collision into some kind of inflexible shield at a speed of 15.6 m/s (56 km/h). The vehicle’s exterior body is designed by CATIA V5 R20 along with two material properties to our design. The existing Aluminum alloy 6061 series is compared with carbon fiber IM8 material. The simulation is being carried out by us in the “Radioss” available in “Hyper mesh 17.0” software. The energy conservation and momentum energy absorption are carried out from this dynamic structural analysis.
